Guest Reviews
- Yudit (2/5): - Mal olor en la habitación
El agua del sanitario no funcionaba
Ropa de cama con mal olor
- Linda (8/5): Good place in historic downtown. - My one night stay was fine. Like most of the recent reviews I read, the room was clean and the staff was polite and helpful. My bed was comfortable and all the surfaces I came in contact with were clean -sheets, sink, toilet, tub, desk, towels.
That said, there are some things people might like to know. This is a very old hotel and it doesn't seem to have ever been remodeled to any quality standard in the last 50 + years. Most furnishings are quite shabby. The pictures make it look in better shape than it is. There are no elevators. It still uses door keys. There was no deadbolt on my door. There was a chain.
Of course, I only know about the room I stayed in.
The hotel is old enough to have had transoms. The glass now replaced with a board and the AC vent. The very cool vintage mechanism to operate the transomes were still there!
The lighting was dim in my room, which was fine by me. The night before I stayed in a place where there was no dim lighting option. Also, you can't adjust the AC. The temperature was fine for me. Which means many people will find it too warm.
I stayed here because I missed my flight. I chose this in order to explore the historic part of town. Be aware half the buildings are empty. And there are mostly fairly high end restaurants and bars/clubs in the area. It seemed deserted until people started coming out for the evening. It was Saturday night. I wondered if I should be concerned about safety. But it was fine.
- Laura (10/5): Awesome - Front desk is super friendly, old man is very understanding and the young man is very respectful and nice, rooms are simple nothing out of control everything clean
- Juan (4/5): - The shower and restroom was out in the hall way,,, not in my room.
- Bryan (10/5): - Good service
- Heriberto (2/5): - Very old building, no hotel signal, darkness, main entrance closed, cockroaches,
- Bryan (10/5): - Friendly and helpful staff, clean rooms
- Napoles (2/5): - This place was absolutely horrible. First off it doesnt even look like a hotel, you can't even find the place. There's no sign or anything with the name. We got there and they wouldn't even let us in the doors for like 30 minutes. Then we book the room and there's roaches all over the sink. Luckily i was only staying there for like 5hrs of sleep if not i would have canceled right then and there
- George (10/5): - I have to give two thumbs up for the manager. He was very knowledgeable and courteous, and was a great help on advise on other things.
- Vladimir (10/5): - Good
- Stevenson (2/5): - Unsafe
- Cassandra (2/5): - Horrible hotel, I ended up staying another hotel and the hotel manager had told me that hotel for people to pay to sleep with someone else. It was dark no lighting very scary
- matthew (2/5): don't stay here - Unclean and unsafe. Staff not helpful, and didn't speak english
- OLIVIA (4/5): - Upon arriving seeing the area and the hotel, my family and I chose not to stay. The area didn’t seem safe and the hotel needs a complete renovation but you get what you pay for and I couldn’t get my money back.
- Jesus (2/5): It was the worst trip of my life - pictures on your website at hotel.com, there are so old, that is not even a Hotel, maybe a Motel. is so get o
plus the door was open. we did not stay at all
- Alma (6/5): - Great customer service.
- 858jermainem (10/5): Love it here! Great people! great food! great hangouts and eating - Very nice hotel got to say I love the sunflowers! And the people are very friendly down to earth and love pets so of course this hotel is pet friendly! Everyone made us feel very comfortable and welcome they do not discriminate and hotel is very clean smells great as soon as you walk in the front door! The people here made my family feel very welcomed! Did I mention the prices are great!?! And they even have a garage for you to put your vehicle in that way you no your vehicle is safe and you can be at ease 🙏🤗👌 there's also a park a block away where you can walk your fur babies it's a beautiful Park Plus plenty of restaurants and bars right down the block !great place to be!
- Anita (2/5): - We did not stay. The area looked too dangerous for me and my child.
- Aslen (10/5): - I have a nice stay
- Okezie (2/5): - I never slept, it was so bad and dirty.
I asked for it to be cancel, the lady there said she did cancel but fast forward, I never got no cancelation email or my refund. Anytime I called, they will pick and tell me to call back that they are busy.
This is terrible experience and I don't thing any sensible person should even try it.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Bad service - The shared bathroom was for a full floor and was dirty, the sheets had stains, I was waiting for several minutes Through my room while the maids were sitting in front of me talking
- Francisco (10/5): - Even know that is an old hotel it has everything you need
- Yusimee Yamilet (6/5): - It was a good place to stay. Not he best but it was cheap and can't complain about it. Minor roaches and I'm sure we got bit by bedbugs we stayed 3 nights in which they were quick to give me my room and the staff were very friendly and kind. Environment was 10. Hotel itself a 7
- monicavA5513YM (2/5): DO NOT STAY HERE...BED BUGS EVERYWHERE - Bed bugs!!!!! Bites all over my body. Asked to vacate room before check out time. This place needs new management or torn down! I wouldn't let my pet step food in this health hazard. Place needs to be inspected and condemned. Don't know how they are in business. Not cheap for the horrible experience.
- Bishop (2/5): - I found bed bugs in my room so I got moved to another and there were still bugs. Management tried to over charge me
- Erwin (10/5): - Pete was an excellent help through and through from the immediate service to the taxi to airport. The hotel is classic and true to it's form.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Straight out of a horror movie!! Stay Away!! - Worst experience and dirties hotel ever, the place looked like straight of a horror movie. It smelled like mold there’s people living there next to you, homeless people outside. I called hotels.com to rebook me and they wouldn’t help me and were not worried about my family’s safety. Worst experience ever!! Stay away
- Rosio (4/5): - The staff was very amazing but the the hotel room was very dirty
- Rodolfo (2/5): - They won’t let me back into my room and I have key after I payed for it they locked all there doors
- Jesse (2/5): - Hotel was old and shady looking. The staff was unprofessional. We were escorted up to our room and when we turned on the light, 3 roaches came out of the sink (which was right next to the bed) and 3 more out from the drawers. We immediately walked out. The girl said that the hotel didnt have roaches, only that room, and that the reason was a guest stayed there for 3 weeks and didnt let them clean it. I'd never recommend this to anyone
- Desi (8/5): - I like that they have an inside garage to keep the cars at night and what it needed were some blinds on the windows since the sun came in really hard in the morning.
- tom (6/5): - Great service
- Winston (2/5): - It’s wasn’t in a great area, terrible parking situation and staff did not understand much English.
- Dale (10/5): - Awesome location and friendly staff. I was there for Space x, and so it was affordable and convenient.
- Blanca (2/5): - Smelled horrible 😩
Staff very rude
- Francklin (6/5): - Decent !
- Daniel (2/5): Horrible - There wasn’t any rooms available, even though my booking was allowed. They wouldn’t return my money and hotels.com couldn’t reimburse right away. This is horrible service if anything
- PAULA BEATRIZ (2/5): - Worst hotel we stayed ever.
- David (2/5): - NOTHING
- Noni (2/5): - Bed bugs everywhere, blood stains on the mattress.
- Luz (2/5): - I made my reservation at 11:45 pm when we arrived at the hotel there was a homeless person and the room I reserved had one that shared a bathroom, that was not to my liking, we decided to go looking for another hotel. I do not recommend it, you waste time and money.
- Maykel (10/5): - Close to different places....
- Cynthia M (4/5): - Pretty scared
- Jesus (6/5): - New remodeling
- Jeff (8/5): Business - Historical hotel staff friendly area not safe at night
- Cole (10/5): - Great hotel for the price, with a fun historic feel. Staff was wonderful. Highly recommend staying here—just be ready to use a “translate app” on your phone to communicate with staff.
- Tracy (4/5): - I found multiple cockroaches in our room, the only thing they did for us was spray with raid. Mold in the shower. When I turned on the sink to wash my hands the water sprayed all over the place. I will not be staying here again!
- Katherine (10/5): - The people was friendly
- Rocky (2/5): - Hello, at OYO Cameron Historic Hotel Brownsville, a huge amount of cockroaches, they changed our room, but this did not solve our problem. There are cockroaches everywhere, why the owner of the hotel deceives guests into his hotel, where it is impossible to live
- Julz (2/5): - Was charged for having guest. They will find any reason to charge u more for your stay and was never given a receipt or signed anything
- Yahor (4/5): - dirty all over the hotel
- Sveta_Damiani (2/5): · DO NOT STAY AT THIS PROPERTY! Avoid this hotel at all costs. - Lots of health violations in the room we received. The room looked nothing like in the pictures. There were cockroaches and ants crawling everywhere, including the bed, furniture, towels, etc. The sheets were not clean with a lot of stains on them. The room itself was not clean and looked absolutely disgusting. There was no electricity in the bathroom. We saw the room and left immediately, still waiting to receive the refund from the hotel.
We ended up not spending the night at the property and their management is denying to issue us a refund.
- Yuri (2/5): - Front desk person rude and said hotel was full because I did not paid a time of my reservatiob.
- Herbert (10/5): - Almost everything was okay.
- Sandra (2/5): - Don acept
- Lili (10/5): - .
- Raul (2/5): - Never stay
- Extraordinary457435 (10/5): Felt like Grandma’s Home - We travel to Brownsville often and this was our first time staying at this hotel due to our regular resort being full. I have never felt such hospitality and security as I did this weekend. We were near restaurants and bars and the Zoo. They are dog friendly as long as your dog is friendly. We will be back soon.
- Anneliesis (10/5): - Very satisfied with everything
- Berta (4/5): - The hallways smelled of urine. No room service offered, shared microwave was in need of a good cleaning. It seemed more of a boarding/ refugee house. Not for the weak.
- jorge (2/5): Worst place ever - Everything its old, uncleaned furniture, the place smells bad, carpet dirty, electric appliances not working.
I didn't stayed, I ended going to another hotel because of the smells, at my own expense.
- lydia (8/5): - The staff was nice and very friendly
- Laurence (8/5): - This is an old historic hotel and it does have some charm to it. The place was clean, no mold or mildew, no chemical smell, and no roaches.
The room was clean, bath included. The bed was comfortable.
We could not find a convenience market in the downtown Brownsville area. The property own charged $1.00 per bottle of water (small).
My online agreed too price was $65. For two nights I was charged $172 on my debit card. Not sure whose error this was.
For the hotel, it was overall OK. We wanted to be near the UTRGV Campus, and so the location was convenient for that and the border crossing (we live in Mexico City).
- Sara (2/5): - I did not stay at the hotel
I was accosted by 4 prostitutes and a pimp hanging outside of the hotel before I even had a chance to park
- JORGE (2/5): - Place was very old and smell bad like animal urine and there was roches crawing around the bed and all over the walls also the beds were so old you can feel the springs. Very uncomfortable this hotel needs a update asap.
- Dianna (10/5): Hidden Gem - The hotel Staff were welcoming and attentive. Is the hotel older, absolutely but the hospitality was outstanding! We would definitely stay again. Thank you Cameron Hotel for a memorable and safe stay.
- Aida (6/5): - Don’t like it, need better ac
- Maria Esperanza (8/5): - Excelente atencion por parte de el personal. Muy amable. En relación costo/beneficio esta “bien” a secas. Quieres algo mejor te va a costar mas. Quieres algo económico esta es tu opción.
- Pablo stevan (10/5): - Todo muy bie
- Yareline (8/5): - Very good hotel.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Awful
- Alex (2/5): - Real ok don't like nothing just rent because it's CC lose to down town but when enter the place smell bad and when go up stairs start smell more bad ya wife close trough back the meal and my douthers say smell real bad y few hours latter I cant stay more .I rent other place I leave this place real I don't recommend this place
- Ted (8/5): - It was clean and the staff was friendly.
- Diana (8/5): - Love the idea of this hotel. Lacks in cleanliness. Old dirty carpet all throughout.
- Silvia (10/5): Not bad for the price. - The place was not bad. The showe was a bit durty, one of the beds was noise otherwise we sleep fine.
- Enrique (10/5): - The hotel is confortable...
Clean...
Easy access and cheap
- Jim (2/5): - Checked in late in the day tired from driving. Eat dinner and was headed for bed. Found bugs everywhere then I opened the vanity to find rodent droppings and traps. They had white powder to stop bugs. Was hot but could not open the windows. No air conditioner or fans. I didn’t sleep killing bugs with lights on sweeting with no air movement. I was told I had free cancellation so in the morning I tried to cancel my next night stay I was ignored by stage and no one spoke English. I haves travel for 7yrs now staying in many old hotels as I love history. I know what to expect but dirty ,bug ridden ,rodents and dirt while not even able to open a window is inhumane. Don’t even go there as is horrible
- Ma Librada (8/5): - Thank you for the excellent service
- ALVY (10/5): - Excellent customer services
- Katherine (10/5): - Everything was good
- Verified traveler (2/5): Grim and questionably clean - We were looking for a cheap place to stay while in Brownsville, since we knew we wouldn't be spending much time in the room. Our expectations were quite low—and unfortunately we were so uncomfortable here that we left after just one night.
The photos of this place look much nicer than it is. While we weren't looking for anything fancy, I did expect basic cleanliness. The hallways were strewn with trash, and not just a few pieces. I'm about 75% sure that the sheets were washed before we slept in them, but they had multiple stains and I found a strand of hair that was not mine on the pillowcase.
The only redeeming quality was that the man at the front desk was very nice. But I cannot recommend staying here and would never do so again.
- Marelin (10/5): - Really like this hotel specially for people that aren’t from around
- Verified traveler (2/5): - I have my reservation and I called to confirm and they say yes y had reservation but when I was in the hotel they send me to another because they don’t have room and they will give me back my money
- Luis Ruiz (8/5): - good
- Verified traveler (2/5): One Shabby Place! - Don't get fooled by the 'Historic' Hotel. The place is nothing like the pictures. The rooms and bathroom barely have space to move. The shower stall is dark with no light and barely 3 x 3 and you will hit your arms to the wall if you turn around. The bath towel is something slightly bigger than a hand towel - it wasn't big enough to even wrap around. Not even basic toiletries. The bed is uncomfortable and the sheets seemed like they hadn't been changed in days. The pillows had turned yellow. No blanket is provided - just a duvet cover. The guy at the reception did not know English and had to call someone from outside to help translate to even check-in which was a tedious process since he could not even find the reservation.
You are better off paying the extra $5-10 for a Motel 6 and at least being able to sleep.
- Marllury (2/5): - Worst experience ever
- Ana (2/5): - The place smells really bad
And the area was bad also
Some guys walking around the hotel drunk I was really scared to get out of my car.
- Hayden (8/5): Border town gem. - Great staff, very accommodating. If you want a real Brownsville experience this is the place!
- Christopher (8/5): Good price and friendly service - The hotel was built in 1920 and retains some of that historic charm. The electrical sockets were not all where I wished they would be but it was fine. The ice maker was small but fine. The water was nice and hot. Wasn’t able to control the room temperature but the temp was basically perfect all four days I was there. The hot water faucet handle was tricky to figure out and use but it was ultimately fine. The manager was very friendly and helpful. At first the area seemed a little shady but ultimately, I felt safe there. Was glad the managers lock the front door at night and keep an eye on things at all times. The downtown area is a little economically depressed here after 600 days of covid hysteria.
On the negative side, we did get awoken by housekeeping at 5:30 AM because she mistakenly thought we had checked out. Too bad there weren’t any “do not disturb” signs to hang on the door. I don’t speak Spanish so it was a struggle to communicate, “Go away. We’re checking out at 8AM.” One of the main roads of downtown Brownsville was right below our window and the ancient single-glass panes didn’t do a great job of blocking road noise—sirens, motor revs, loud radios. Glad I had ear plugs. Also the rooms didn’t have much in the way of sound insulation. Consider having a speaker that emits white noise. The room-darkening shades in the room I was in were not quite adequate to keep light out at night.
- Lidia (2/5): - I booked the hotel for one day and when I got to take the place that I paid online they told me that the room was already inhabited and that there was no more space in the hotel. I've been calling to get my refund and they tell me I'm not applying for a refund. They locked us out, I never canceled the service.
- shekima (2/5): - They were very rude and prejudice they only when it Mexicans to stay at a hotel it’s very outdated hot and smells horrible no parking in a very bad location
I wouldn’t let my dog stay there
- Verified traveler (10/5): - GOOD PERSON NO CHANGE
- Nicole (10/5): Amazing experience - It was a good experience I had a good night there the service was amazing I would recommend other people to stay there.
- Verified traveler (4/5): You get what you pay for - Check in was easy, slight language barrier but easy to navigate. Once entering the room I knew there would be issues. There was no blanket, just something that resembled a duvet cover. The shower had terrible water pressure. Only one outlet in the entire room. No temperature control so I couldn’t make it hotter as I only had a duvet cover and no source of warmth. I could see the old tags still on furniture and roach powder poison on the floors.
This place seemed more like a long term cheap boarding house rather than a “historic hotel.”
- Dawlele (8/5): Just right!! - Great location with nice people. Manager is very nice and all the staffs are wonderful. Locked garage parking is very convenient. Everything is in walking distance. One bed is too hard but I didn't ask the manager. If I asked hopefully they will take care of it. We will stay there next time again.
- Carlos (2/5): - By the time thas i was chek in there was no room available.
I did not stay in that hotel because the conditions of the hotel are very bad.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Booked a room and then hours later the room was cancel and I was still charged for the room.
- Pamela (10/5): Not for the timid - It’s a historical hotel, so that should already say something about its age. It was rustic, quaint and very QUIRKY!! No modern TVs, no microwave or coffee maker, the rooms are temp controlled, and you can hear EVERYTHING thru the walls. There are local residents who will chat you up about the area, and the hotel itself. The on-site maintenance guy was super friendly and helped me with all my “modern” needs, like a fan! He seemed to be working non-stop making sure everything ran up to par and keeping things clean! Not up for today”s teens and young people, as there really isn’t anything for them to do, but I would stay again! I love all the historical scenery and the “quirks” of an old place.
- Michael (4/5): Unable to check-in... - The night that I arrived, the gentleman working check-in was unable to find my reservation. I showed him the verification on my phone, but realized that I had not been charge for the room (NOW I REALIZE THAT THIS WAS A SIGN). Since he could not find my reservation, he was going to give me a different room with a $7 increase, I'm like no biggie. He tries running my credit card and the machine was interrupted by someone using the WiFi?? In the end, CapitalOne flagged the transaction and I went somewhere else...no regrets!!
