Guest Reviews
- Paloma (8/5): - Overall great, cleanliness could use some help
- Mauren (2/5): - Los desayunos terribles y limitados
- Jessica (8/5): Great for beach access - Room was spacious and fairly clean with strong AC and amazing water pressure. The pool was really nice, and we regularly saw beautiful parrots fly overhead while we swam. Staff was lovely once you get past the check-in where they were pretty aggressive about selling tours. Restaurant and bar were great, and the breakfast was perfect for an active day. Unfortunately, their policy is to charge $20/hour for late check out, but when the electricity and water went out 3 hours before our check out leaving us without a shower that day, they offered no compensation or extra time to clean ourselves. Really, the only flaw of this place was the reception staff. Otherwise, lovely place!
- Randy (6/5): - Personnel was efficient, but a few items need to be addressed.
Shower had a very slow drain. I ended up having 2” of standing water. Bathroom sink didn’t have much water coming out of spickit
I saw 2 spiders in my room.
TV didn’t have any stations that was speaking English. I tried to watch Netflix and Utube. Wouldn’t work.
- Dan (10/5): - Had a good time here... the staff was exceptional. Pool was nice and warm but not too warm. Bar and food was enough to not have to leave. It also has its own beach and surfboards to rent, if you surf.
- daniel (10/5): - The people here are amazing, from the front end to the kitchen, and the surf school on site. Can't wait to return!!
- Ferough (10/5): - Over all a good place for the price. Staff at the bar and restaurant are wonderful.
- Mimeo (10/5): - Tony was great when we checked in.
- David (8/5): - Staff, on the Beach
But would have like someone to carry bags to room
- Michael (10/5): - Nice people
- IVETTE (10/5): - The place is a hiding Gem. Please do not let the entrance turn you off. Is totally different as you cross the small bridge. Beautiful pool, bar restaurant by the pool and walking to the beautiful beach
- Rosanna (10/5): - Loved everything about this property. Well worth the money. They will definitely see me again.
Service was awesome, food was good, pool was great and right on the ocean was a plus.
Free parking on site.
Don't let the entrance scare you away. Park your car and let the good times begin. ❤️🇨🇦
- Chris (10/5): - great access to beach..secure access..good breakfast...nice rooms...
- sheila (4/5): - The property looked beautiful, but had a horrible musty odor in the rooms. If you have allergies, I would not stay here.
- William (8/5): - Older beach hotel. Very convenient, lots of surf shops right outside. Rear exit right on the beach. Friendly and helpful staff!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Functional, better for young crowd - Super cute hotel right on the beach, the reception woman is the sweetest person and helped us a lot! This would be good for a younger person I think, bar/pool area plays music pretty loud all day and a little late into the night. Definitely some ruckus outside from other guests late. Only other downside is there is no blankets on the beds, it just a sheet. Otherwise, very cute vibes and simple functional rooms
- ericka (4/5): - I was not okay with being locked out without someone opening the gates 2 night of the 3 that we were there. The girl at the front was not pleasant but all of the other staff was super kind. There were no blankets, just 1 sheet to sleep with. A lizard was in our room. No elevators or help to get our bags up to our room. The bar closed before 9pm. I usually leave good reviews but I can’t for this place. If I had not paid up front, I would have stayed somewhere else.
- Miguel (10/5): - The ocean view was beautiful and staff was very nice!
- Tatjana (2/5): - Unsafe, Dirty, and Nothing Like the Photos
We booked this hotel for 4 nights and left after the second night due to unsafe and unsanitary conditions. The property is not at all as pictured on Expedia. Upon arrival, we saw cockroaches on the walls, mold in the bathrooms, outdated and musty rooms, no blankets, and a malfunctioning air conditioner. The pool was filthy.
This is not a place anyone—especially families with kids—should be staying. We spent days contacting Expedia and the hotel, only to be told by the hotel that it was up to Expedia and by Expedia that it was up to the hotel. In the end, the hotel’s management denied the refund request, despite the manager, Lenardo, originally saying they would work with Expedia.
We had to pay out of pocket to check into another hotel.
Avoid this property at all costs.
- Ali (2/5): - Would not recommend for a family.
Hotel needs a lot of work
- Richard (10/5): - Best stay with everything needed in one spot.
- Andrea (10/5): - Amazing hotel right off the beach.
- Gabriela (2/5): - It was disgusting — we had to leave. The towels were stained, the bathrooms were dirty, and one of the rooms was full of dust. I couldn’t stay there with my one-year-old baby given how filthy everything was. We had to book another Airbnb and leave immediately. They should have refunded us. I absolutely do not recommend this place.
- rahila (2/5): - This place is absolutely terrible. As we entered the room, before we even had a chance to look around, we were hit with a pungent musty/moldy odor coming from the walls.
The rooms were filthy, as if they aren't maintained or cleaned at all. There were puddles of water in the bathroom and living room, there was a nasty brownish gel coating the dresser drawers, the door handles/locks were broken, there was a big gap underneath the door which would allow all kinds of insects to enter the room at night.
The room's balcony fence was placed with hardly any support, it wasn't hooked properly and there was a note warning not to lean on it, but if anyone accidentally put any weight on it they could fall very easily and get injured.
Their restaurant kitchen was disgusting from what we could see through the window, similar to the rooms, it looked like they don't regularly clean it, if they ever clean it at all. I did not want to risk eating there at all with my kids.
On top of our health and safety concerns, the guy at the front desk, Josh, kept changing his story. When we arrived, he'd told us they were fully booked and wouldn't be able to give us a refund for our last night, so that we could drive back a day early to San Jose to catch our 11AM flight the next day.
After seeing our mess of a room, we went back to talk to him about our health and safety concerns, and after some back and forth he tried offering us different rooms, after originally telling us they were booked up.
- Sabrina (8/5): - Property is by the beach, well maintained. Breakfast was a fixed menu only two choices - typical costa rica or pancake with fruit.
The room was good, but the toileteries offered were not adequate for a beach hotel ( only soap and shampoo, no conditioner).
The beach was beautiful!
- Michelle (10/5): - Yosh and Roxana where so helpful to set up transportation and day trips for me. I loved the breakfast provided and the bar staff were so friendly. I felt very safe and it was a home away from home. The Beach was steps away and the water was beautiful.
- Habiboulaye (2/5): - I accidentally booked two nights for the wrong week. Per their word, it was going to be canceled so I could reschedule it for the current week. After some promises, I went ahead and booked the correct date, yet they still refuse to cancel my orignal payment. They are unethical and greedy.
- Michele (10/5): - I really enjoyed the location of Hotel South Beach as the beach itself was less rocky then going south or north. There is a surfing school right on the beach front and the staff at the school was so amazing. The staff at the hotel were extremely kind, fun and always pleasant. The rooms are basic, but that is all I needed in this wonderful environment. It is walking distance to the down town, El Miro hike and the famous Jaco sign...I even extended my holiday!! Thank you to Hotel South Beach staff for making my trip so memorable!
- Anna (10/5): - This place was very beautiful and offered a lot to do at the resort. The food was amazing, and the staff were very friendly and hospitable. Would definitely recommend.
- Tyler (10/5): - I wish I remembered the bartenders names he was hilarious and very personable. The breakfast is great, the beach and pool are really nice too
- Steve (2/5): - There was roaches and the rooms smelled really bad. Couldn’t sleep because I just felt dirty sleeping in those beds. My parents found trash under their beds and empty beer bottles. Terrible stay.
- Inayat (8/5): - Great property. Fantastic staff. I would recommend.
- Trisha (10/5): - The staff was wonderful and the property was beautiful.
- Theresa (2/5): - We arrived. It felt slightly unsafe upon arrival but I do not know the area well like other parts of Costa Rica. The check-in area wasn't clean. Myself and my two boys, 12 and 15, and I had a bit of a disturbing feeling, and I decided it would be ok for one night. We checked in, got our keys, went directly to our room, and when we opened the door it smelled like mold. I kept telling myself this is ok. We are only here one night and we can play on the beach in the morning. We then opened the bathroom door, and there were giant roaches. Not one or two but everywhere in the bathroom. I stepped on a few before they ran into the main room and then slammed the door. They were built with armor. They were 1.5 inches long and took a big stomp to kill. Ugh I do not like killing things. Anyway, I kindly spoke to management about the roaches.
I said I can not stay here due to the number of roaches. He first said This is the tropics. I said I understand we have been in Costa Rica for 9 days, but we have never experienced roaches at stays & not the numbers and size of these. He told the woman manager (she did not speak English). He interpreted for us to contact Expedia for a refund, and they will honor it. Expedia has attempted to negotiate with the hotel five time they will not honor the refund. I did not expect perfection from this place, but I do believe that cleanliness is a fundamental element that everyone deserves in a hotel stay, & if it is not there, a refund should be honored.
- Shayla (8/5): - Complimentary Breakfast is amazing!!! Older style hotel in terms of designing, but being right on the beach and having a balcony makes up for it. Centrally located so you can walk to downtown and explore the heart of Jaco. Also, we found that it was very helpful to stay at a hotel where most excursion were aware of the location. All of the excursions we booked offered complimentary pick up and drop off with bookings because it is a known area and hotel. Would 100% stay here again.
- Gregg (10/5): - Amanda, at the front desk, was super!! Had a couple issues during check-in but she took care of us! The property was nice, the breakfasts were good.
- Michael (10/5): - Quiet
- alex (10/5): - It was a good experience
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The staff was nice and courteous, it has a cozy restaurant and bar, pool, it is at the beach, the room was nice and clean. If you like surfing and the beach life, you will enjoy this hotel.
- Kevin (6/5): - Pool area was in good condition. No beach chairs on the beach. All chairs were in the shade. They did have surfboard rentals available. Overall, location was OK nothing to brag home about.
- Trenton (2/5): - I have stayed in this hotel at least 10 times in the last few years and there’s one guy that works at the front desk named Joshua. Over the years he’s been sort of cold towards me and kind of rude, but this is probably the last time I’m gonna be staying here because he has really shown that he should not be working the front desk. He is very rude, not helpful with zero customer service skills. Just like today I asked the ladies not to clean my room, but to please leave coffee in the room for me to have coffee the next morning. He tells me that they don’t put coffee in the room every day that they only put it there the first day that you’re there as a welcome, which is not true. They’ve always put coffee in my room every single day when they clean my room. He just does not want to give me the coffee. It’s ridiculous. He acts like it’s gold. And every time you walk into the office, he acts if you’re bothering him. I know they changed management, but he is still there. Everyone at the hotel is fantastic at the bar and restaurant and the cleaning staff, but he is the bad apple. And it’s sad because he is at the front desk in the first person you see when you check into the hotel.
- Lauren (4/5): - We would not stay here again. There were people partying and yelling until 8am and paper-thin walls so no one got any sleep. The beds were rock hard and no blankets were provided. The staff was nice enough and the breakfast was ok. The pool area is very nice however walking around the property was slippery and dangerous because of the mildew on the tiles everywhere. We left two days early in search for a better place to stay.
- Brad (8/5): - Was a little weary for this trip after reading some negative reviews. Sure the place is rundown. But its still got a good vibe; staff was friendly and the location is beautiful.
Beachfront is just .. wow.
- Evelyn (10/5): - This property has a beautiful location right on the beach!! the pool is perfect. We loved our stay very much, we recommend rooms 14, 15...those in the back facing the pool that is right next to the bar, which is on the other side of the beach. You can't beat it!
- SAMIRAN (10/5): - Property was next to the beach..the owner of the property and staff were nuce and helpful.Pleasant experience
- Shanthi (6/5): - Location is the best. Rest are not so good.
- Nicholas (10/5): - The staff are very friendly and helpful, and they served a nice big breakfast! The room was quite spacious and comfortable and the setting has a nice decor with lots of trees and plants and a little bridge over a small creek.
- sylvia (10/5): - Always like it here breakfast included nice management and employees
- IVETTE (10/5): - Is not a fancy hotel. however, has everything you need, clean, good air conditioning and hot water. Pool is perfect, walk easy to the beach. Restaurant and bar near the pool. The restaurant has good food but not a big selection but you always can order out to be deliver. Do not let the entrance turn you off. Is a really good small hotel.
- Paula (4/5): - Property is very old, hotel food is not great, Lots of mosquitoes, would expect more for the value. However staff were super friendly and it is beachfront.
- Ray (10/5): - Walk right to the beach. Super friendly and helpful staff. Free breakfast was great! They give you a beach towel when you check in, which was great because we forgot ours. Beach was amazing. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Hotel isn’t over populated, nice cozy feel. Hot water and strong AC. Would definitely return!
- KEVIN (6/5): - Pretty sad that there was a sign on the railing on our balcony, warning us to not lean on it…
- Anne (8/5): - The property is a little dated. But well maintained. Staff was freindly and helpful. Setting was picturesque. I liked the fact it was slightly off the beaten path, but less than a $5 uber ride from the heart of the night life.
Only negative I would give is I would have liked to have gad a deadbolt option on door.
- Helen (10/5): - The employees were all very kind and helpful
- Michael (2/5): - Nothing postive to say about this property. From we arrived service was horrible. Check in didnt go well. Food prices at hotel was more than the 5 star hotel we ended up staying at. Their were roaches and lizards in the room. We were in Costa Rica so understood there might be crawlers in the room. Hotel was old and not well maintained. We only had one light functioning in the room. We had pizza the first night and put box outside room after. Empty box was not collected for 3 days. We ended up discarding it ourselves. I travel the world and stay at mamy hotels and have to say this was the worst hotel i ever stayed at.
- Edwin (10/5): - Very nice hotel. Staff was very nice.
- Brittney (6/5): - The pictures are a little misleading. Needs a lot of updates. Locals hangout. The dust on the wall was so thick, maybe from ac… but still… let’s clean that up!!! Staff was nice. Beach front beautiful but a lot of ppl trying to sell things etc a little sketchy all around
- Patricia (8/5): - I enjoyed my stay overall, mainly because of the amazing location—being right by the beach was definitely a highlight! The bar staff and servers were super friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. However, the front desk service wasn’t as warm or helpful, which was a bit disappointing. The accommodations could also use some updates—the room felt a bit outdated, and the towels weren’t the best quality. That said, the beach access and the vibe at the bar made up for some of the downsides. With a few improvements, this place could be a real gem!
- Jessica M (10/5): - Easy check in, staff was amazing and very helpful. I love the quick access to beach and pool. Bar and music were awesome
- Crystal (10/5): - Everything was perfect
- Donna (4/5): - This property is not the place to go if you want to relax. Music is playing from 10am to 10pm. Very few beach chairs available. Grounds and walkways are dirty. No blanket on the bed, only 1 sheet.
- AGNIESZKA (10/5): - Great place by the beach!
- Verified traveler (4/5): Worn Out - Check-in guy was on his phone the whole time. Zero customer focused.
The best description would be just plain 'worn out'.
Breakfast is limited. As an example, a second cup of coffee is $3. U.S.
Plain chicken dinner is $20. I recommend 5 minute walk to Beach Break Resort. Big room for $25. less per night. Another 5 minute walk to $6.50 chicken dinner
- Mark (6/5): Management has changed. - There were some hidden charges that we not clear or displayed.
- Jesse (10/5): This hotel is a gem. - Perfect place for a family in this somewhat young, single tourist beach town. The beach down here is sandy and more toward the north has a lot of rock, so very happy with the location. Casually set up a surf lesson with the company right outside the hotel. The hotel had a lot of beautiful plants throughout the rooms. It was old school, but in the best possible way. This is my ideal kind of hotel.
- Amanda (6/5): - Nothing fancy. Wouldnt recommend for a primary vacation location
- Tamara (2/5): - Due to Mother Nature we missed our connecting flight to get to this hotel. Allegedly Expedia contacted the property to request a refund for my room as there was as nothing I could do. The first time I called the hotel they said okay just have Expedia contact us. Expedia drug it out for days and now the hotel does not want to give me a refund. This probably would have been a good hotel to experience but due to the circumstance put a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe not so much on them and more on Expedia not sure but very frustrating.
- Dorina (10/5): - Great, close to the beach, however not for regular swimers. Only for surfers 🏄♀️
- Terrence (8/5): - Great spot on the beach in Jaco. Good food, good staff, rooms are nice. Getting towels to shower daily is a pain in the ass. Free breakfast is average.
- Passport14766870315 (4/5): 1 star resort, needs a major overhaul of upgrades. - Only thing good about this resort was the beach. As long as you don’t look back at the resort, the ocean is beautiful. Staff were pleasant.
Doors didn’t lock properly. Bedsheets were dirty. Furniture is old and rickety. Shady exterior and overall feeling of uneasiness. Lots of men who “live” at the resort for several months of the year . And location is off the main strip into town so you have to walk through some sketchy streets before you find the safer areas.
- Daniel Esteban (10/5): - Love the property! Felt like you were in the rain forest! Large clean pool! Easy acess to beach with great opertunities to surf. Enjoyable walk to town and amazing sunsets!
- csamo1 (2/5): Formal Complaint Regarding Unpleasant Stay at Hotel South Beach; Jaco, Costa Rica - I am writing to express my deep dissatisfaction with my recent stay at Hotel South Beach in Jaco, Costa Rica. I feel compelled to inform you about several issues I encountered, which made my experience far below expectations & significantly impacted my comfort & safety.
Highlighted below are the following concerns regarding the property and my room:
1. Room Conditions:
o The room lacked basic amenities such as a phone & an iron, which are typically standard for a 2-3 star hotels.
o The room was very old & outdated. The bathroom had screens for windows, which compromised privacy, bugs coming inside the room and the ability to secure the room.
o The bed are low & uncomfortable, which made it difficult to get some rest.
o The furniture was made of wood and appeared worn-out, further contributing to the overall lack of comfort.
o I found bugs in my room, including stepping on a large cockroach by accident, which was both disgusting & alarming.
o The room also lacked a closet, which meant there was nowhere to hang my clothes properly. In addition, a non-functional safe!
2. Hotel Property and Location:
o After checking in at the front desk, we had to walk past a construction area, a parking lot, and the space where housekeepers were doing laundry. This was not only inconvenient but also gave the hotel an unprofessional & poorly maintained appearance.
o Some of the guest rooms were located directly across from the kitchen, creating an unpleasant environment.
3. Safety and Noise:
o I did not feel safe during my stay. Random noises from animals, such as cats fighting, added to the unease I felt throughout the night.
Overall, the property is in a prime location right off the beach, which could make it a fantastic place to stay. However, with its current state, I strongly believe the hotel owner should consider selling it to a larger hotel group or chain that has the resources to invest in proper renovations. With the right investment, the property could be transformed into a much safer, cleaner, and more comfortable place for guests to enjoy.
In its current state, however, I would NOT recommend Hotel South Beach to anyone. The conditions were not only uncomfortable but also unhygienic & unsafe. I regret choosing this property for my stay in Jaco, as it did not live up to any reasonable expectations of quality or service. Hotel South beach is a 1-star hotel at best!
Please review the issues mentioned. I hope you will address these concerns & feedback seriously so that future guests do not have to experience what I did.
- Jerry (10/5): - Older facility, clean.
I would go back
- Traimont (4/5): - The beach area was magnificent! But the outside of the hotel looks low quality. The bathroom feels and looks almost like a prison, the ceiling had black mold and the paint was chipping bad near the a/c unit.
- Cameron (8/5): - The location was great. On the quieter end of the beach which was nice. If the hotel put a little money into the place it would go a long way
- Bianca Hannah (10/5): - Recommend the beach front suite but you have to call and request it specifically!
- Juan (8/5): - Good
- nicklW9902PW (2/5): AVOID! Charged Twice and will not refund us. - This hotel charged us twice for the same room and disputed our objection despite us having proof of double payment. If you prepaid for your stay online, DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR CREDIT CARD. Also make sure you specify what you want for breakfast if you have difficulty understanding their accent, as they will not allow two portions.
- Frances (8/5): - Clean, staff great, sime villas are located in the Mountains. Yiu must walk up about 90 steps uo hill to the villa
- Johnathan (10/5): - Walk out to ocean and pool was amaxing
- Shauna (10/5): - Everyone was so friendly, property was cute and charming! Great place
- LESLIE (4/5): - I was disappointed by south beach this time. Wifi was only available in and around room, then had to switch to a iffy one when eating. Alsobif booking by a third party not guaranteed the room you paid for. Probably wouldn't go back
- MikeM9546 (10/5): South Beach Hotel is a Lovely Stay in Jaco - This is a smaller hotel on the nicer part of Jaco beach but definitely has that Costa Rica vibe... that I look for when I am visiting Costa Rica. I like to stay on the 3rd floor so I have an ocean view but you do have to walk up the steps. The pool is always sparkling clean and refreshing. I love the tiki bar they have between the pool and beach - great drinks and food and service. I also love the breakfast that is included with your stay. The rooms are basic but comfortable. The best are the people that work there. They are always helpful and so nice. Just a lovely place to stay.
- NICHOLAS (2/5): - Buyer beware! The place is in disrepair, and could easily be a nice facility. The pictures are NOT indicative of the property; we thought our room would be overlooking the pool, but there is a whole section completely unattached to the main rooms, and that's where we were put. Again..... NOTHING LIKE THE PICTURES!!! The bathroom was gross, room was very old and small, ceiling fan was dirty, and the doors and windows were unsafe. Would not recommend.
- Samantha (10/5): - The staff was very kind
- sflcross (4/5): Run-down hotel--great beach location - I decided to go ahead and write this review because i think it is important that people are aware of the actual condition of this hotel. i recently stayed at this hotel Feb 3-11th and was so excited to leave the cold weather of Colorado. However, when i arrived i immediately realized the condition of the exterior of this small hotel with no security, The front office gave me one towel for the pool and no more were available, It is apparent that this old hotel needs repair on so many levels. My room was bare with two old bath towels, a push-button lock on the door only ... The staff in kitchen and bar area was good and the food okay, but the overall structure needs alot of work. I have included pictures to better describe my shower and some exterior problems. The biggest plus for the this hotel was the location, right on the beach and my room had a balcony that had a great view of the beach....which helped.
THE MOST DISAPPOINTING PART...WAS I HAD LUGGAGE LEFT AT HE MAIN OFFICE AN HOUR PRIOR TO MY SHUTTLE ARRIVING AND DISCOVERED MY NECKLACE & BRACELET MISSING WHEN I RETURNED TO COLORADO....
- Melissa (10/5): - The staff was super nice and helpful to our big group. Josh was amazing
- Julie (4/5): Avoid this property - Hotel really needs some upgrading. Pictures are deceiving. No toilet seats in womans bathrooms of reception and bar. No blankets, only sheets, Lock on door busted, room smells musty, towels soiled, pool cloudy, really disappointed.
- IVETTE (10/5): - The hotel is Gem 💎. Please don't let the entrance turn you off. The rooms aren't fancy but has everything you need. Beautiful pool and spectacular walking beach right after the bar.
- Harolc (8/5): Very Good overall - Good room , Very Clean , Comfortable , beautiful view
Could have used blanket in room and fan turned off at night
- Duane (6/5): - The staff was very friendly and hospitality was good. The property needed some upgrades but was clean.
- Keith (10/5): Great place - Great hotel, great location, very friendly people. Prices were very reasonable, including the drinks at the bar. Rooms are very clean.
- DAVID (6/5): - Deteriorating facilities, requires renovation
- Regan (6/5): - The property was somewhat old and definitelyoutdated. Several things definitely needed maintenance and/or updating.
Parking was good and secure. Hotel location was on the beach and very nice despite no ocean or beach views from any room.
Extra charges for what I thought should’ve been included such as having a friend stop by and hang out for a couple hours. $15 to register that friend.
Evidently typically charged extra if you wanted fruit with your breakfast. All in all I would rate this place average.
- Nikita (8/5): - Overall stay was good but in the night it was very noisy
- Christopher (10/5): - Thanks!!
- Deborah (4/5): South Beach - We stayed here in 2020 and the condition of the hotel is fetting run down. I love the pool, temperature just perfect. The breakfast, tho included, was very poor quality and stone cold. I would rather pay for my breakfast and get something good. The two servers were friendly
- Lyndsay (10/5): - We got upgraded to a huge room with an ocean view. Watched the sunset from our large balcony.
- Barbara (6/5): - This hotel is right on the beach and has a great view from the bar. We liked that there were beach chairs and a nice big pool. The issue was the partying. The walls are paper thin and we had a huge party going on in the room next door: loud music and singing, dogs barking, you name it! Didn't sleep a wink!
- Angela (8/5): - We arrived late at night, after check-in but were
greeted immediately, very grateful we didn't have to sleep in our car. We only booked for 1 night but were pleasantly surprised how nice the property & beachfront were.
