Guest Reviews
- Yanina (7/5): -
- Frank (10/5): Nostalgic hidden gem ryokan next to Zenkoji - The building itself is very charming in the old-world kind of way, extremely nostalgic and suitable for someone who wants to experience Japanese culture. The old couple who are running the place are very friendly. The location is definitely extremely convenient for someone who wants to go to Zenkoji early in the morning. Nothing.
- Adam (8/5): Excellent traditional guesthouse close to the main temple - Charming little guesthouse in the centre of town, a short bus hop from the main station and easy walking distance to the main temple and restaurant streets. Owners are welcoming and helpful, the rooms are authentically traditional and the building feels like a character in itself. A real taste of classic Japan. Anyone coming should be aware that this is a traditional guesthouse - you may not have access to a private bathroom (very likely not to) and things work to set traditions around slippers, etc. Go with the flow but respect the owners and the property.

- Kyle (2/5): Not a nice place - There are no obvious redeeming features associated with this accommodation with the exception of the place being adjacent to a bus stop and there being a 20 minute walk to the Nagano Station. The accommodation is also close to a museum and a temple. I have travelled all over Japan and this joint qualifies as the least likely place that I would re-book.
Any request for a bowl or a spoon was greased with a scowl and a display of inconvenience on the part of the owners.
Initially, upon arrival, I was advised that the place did not offer meals. However, the place did offer breakfasts to selected guests. However, the perceived rift-raft were not permitted to use the dining area. There is no fridge as such; merely a device that is set at about 10-12C

- Sam (8/5): Great people, awesome view from our room. Fascinating place with waterfall in ladies onsen. - Traditional Japanese breakfast was excellent. Toilet for our family room was down steep slippery stairs. If you don't want to do that in the night, best to request a room on the same level as the toilets!

- Michele (9/5): Great traditional japanese experience - Traditionnal Ryokan that felt like you are back in time. The owners are super nice and keen to help even if they only speak Japanese. Breakfast was traditional japanese food and was excellent. Onsen is cosy and clean. We stayed in winter so the heating is only available in the rooms where you live yet not in the corridors. But you rapidly get used to it ;-)
- William (10/5): - Beautiful building with traditional rooms. The feel of the rooms are something you don’t find in any regular hotel. Super friendly staff made us feel welcome. Very peaceful and quiet.

- Layla (9/5): Very good, old building. Perfect if you want an authentic Ryokan experience. - Very comfortable, good location, friendly staff (they don’t speak English but we’re still very helpful and kind), good food, very clean. No elevator so be prepared to pull your luggage up stairs, difficult to leave late at night because the elderly couple will wake up, they were really nice and don’t seem to mind but is till felt bad so we didn’t leave late again.
- isabella (10/5): peaceful and serene space located in a convenient area - beautiful space right across the bus station. convenient location, next to delicious cafes and food. enjoyed the peaceful space and how the room looked in the morning as well as at night with the lamp on. also has a small onsen, which im glad i got to try since i didn’t get the chance to go out of my way for onsens on this trip.
- Shana (9/5): It was lovely to stay in this ryokan. - I loved the homey feel. It was so charming and had everything we needed. It was clean and comfortable. It was hard to communicate with the owners as my Japanese is limited and they only speak Japanese. They also didn’t respond to my messages on booking.com.

- YASUICHI (4/5): -
- Joanne (9/5): - Lovely hosts, excellent location, quirky accommodation, with an onsen. Just fabulous.
- Richard (9/5): -
- Melissa (10/5): Highlight of our trip, cannot recommend highly enough. - Amazing ryokan. The hosts were the most delightful people in all of Japan, super sweet. Facilities were fantastic - the beds were incredibly comfortable, robes were great, and the onset was an incredible experience. Cannot recommend this place highly enough. Close to temples, food, and easy bus/walking distance to train station.
- Avital (8/5): Othentic Ryokan stay! - Very good location. The owners are an old friendly couple. Very helpful. House is special and unique, like a small castle of wood with half floors and staris all around. I guess the tatami mattress is not for me. It was too flat and thin, and my pelvis sides hurt after 3 nights of sleep.
The very back room doesn't get the wifi signal. I asked to move to the front of the house, and there the signal was goos.
- peyton (10/5): - Very authentic experience 11pm curfew
- A Pedro (9/5): -
- Peter (9/5): Really charming ryokan in really convenient location. - A really charming traditional ryokan in central Nagano very close to the temple and main drag. The couple who own it are truly lovely. It’s quite old and it does show a little. It’s what you’d expect for the price though.
- Kaci (10/5): Traditional ryokan with friendly old couple running it. - Traditional Japanese style. Historic location and close to local temple. Very authentic and the hosts were welcoming and friendly. Lovely clean onsen. Nil
- Brianna (10/5): -
Niks
- Yann (10/5): -
- Adrian (10/5): - The sweet elderly couple who run this Ryokan take immaculate care of this gorgeous, unique, and historic property. This was my first visit to Japan and my language skills were limited, but they were very accommodating. The onsen was perfect for a relaxing soak, and the location was convenient to visit Zenkōji temple and a variety of shops and restaurants.
- Alex (10/5): - This ryokan is so cool!!!

- Forrest Young (7/5): Good location but value for money could be better - Location was excellent. For nearly 200 USD per night, this did not meet expectations. Stay instructions were not clear because the hosts, although gracious and kind, did not speak English and did not give any written instructions in English. Very loud neighbors one night were disruptive - walls are paper thin so we could not sleep. Strict showering times for the communal bath. not flexible about adding breakfast the morning of the stay, so be sure to order in advance if you are at all interested.
- Austin (10/5): A charming time capsule from another era, made even better by the lovely owners. - The baths in the ryokan are excellent after a long day of walking. The owners are generous and kind, and they keep impeccable care of this inn. Within tripping distance of Zenko-ji, great food, and Nagano station. If you’re looking for a place to stay with personality, history, and charm aplenty, this is it.
- Márk (10/5): Lovely old couple with a lovely place - Lovely place and lovely hosts. They were so nice and kind. The place was super clean. It located near the Zenkōji Temple and view was amaizing. They gave Yukata for bath and the facility was also super clean and neat. The only dislike for me is that you have to walk 2km from the train station uphills, but it’s totally worth it!

- nishimiya (7/5): -
- Michael (10/5): -
- Mary (8/5): Enjoyed our stay and good value for money. Thank You - Lovely old Ryokan with Onsen, close to the Shrines Electrics dated, electrical socket loose on wall. Some lights didn’t work.
Would have been nice to have 2 chairs for two people.
- Julia (9/5): - The house is gorgeous and the room is beautifully furnished. The bath is quite nice and clean. The hosts and staff were very lovely, though no one spoke any English. Hot water and tea were provided in the room daily and drinking water was always available as well. The place is within walking distance to a temple and a souvenir shopping street.
A few things to be aware of should be noted. Since this is a traditional place, there are a lot of steep stairs (which is part of the charm of the house) and no elevator. The hosts are an elderly couple, so there might not be anyone to assist with luggage. My room only had a sink (which I knew before). Bathrooms are shared, but nearby and clean.
- Arthur (8/5): -
- Elaine (8/5): Old ryokan with a charm - Excellent location from Zenkoji temple and the shops selling snacks and souvenirs. Short bus ride from the station.
The place, although dated, has a nice charm and is well maintained.
Hosts were incredibly polite and thoughtful.
It was nice to have a bath to soak in after being out in the cold weather. Minor things only:
Walls are a bit thin so could hear people talking late night or very early in the morning, as well as a bit of street noise. I wore earbuds to sleep and it helped
The only other thing is the water pressure in the public bath for washing yourself before hopping in - pressure was very low and it takes a minute to heat up. So it was a bit cold waiting for it.
- Gabor (7/5): -
- Maria Victoria (8/5): Ubicación y tradición a buen precio.
No tienen aparcamiento gratuito cerca.
- Beth (9/5): Very good, excellent hoists - Authentic great experience Steep stairs and slippers
- Emmanuel (10/5): Authentic Japanese Style - Old antiques. Staff are nice Location
- Amalia (10/5): Pretty japenesse hotel - I really like the japenesse style of hotel.
- LOLA (10/5): - Great stay in traditional ryokan!
- Bronwyn (8/5): Pleasant experience with the traditional Japanese accommodation, warm hospitality of the hosts, convenient location for - Experience the traditional japanese ryokan with authentic style including the onsen. Nil
- Renan (8/5): - Staff was really nice but wi-fi was not working throughout my whole stay
- Joseph (9/5): - The owners were very friendly and helpful during my stay, very close to the temple i wanted to visit, the facilities were very clean at all times, the room was cleaned daily without asking. Nothing, however the plsce doesn't have a lift and the stairs are very step to take your bags to your room
- Sean (8/5): - Excellent location for a quick trip to Zenkoji Temple and a very good bargain. The only issues are the stairs being steeper than most people are likely used to, and the futons can give you a stiff back. The price is nice in that it gives you the ability to try out the Ryokan experience without committing to a heavy price tag.
- ann (8/5): - Fabulous breakfast. Traditional Japanese breakfast. The only drawback was the staircase. Its really steep. And there's no lift. Soundproofing from the street wasn't the best but a beautiful room
- Roberta (10/5): -
- XINTONG (10/5): -
- Claire (10/5): Fantastic traditional Japanese hotel - A wonderful traditional hotel with super location. The owners are a sweet older couple who were incredibly friendly and attentive. The shared bath is a great place to relax in the evening after a long day out. I can highly recommend staying here :) Just a small warning: the stairs are steep and you need good mobility.
- FrancescaGhio (10/5): -
- Silvana (8/5): - Sehr nettes Personal. Tolle Lage. Authentisches Ambiente.
- matteo (7/5): - Aged venue, very close to the temple The owner does not speak a single english word, need a renovation asap
- Janet (6/5): - I stayed 2 nights here. After the first night, I decided to relax in my room, read my book and venture out after lunch. However, at 10am the woman running the inn knocked repeatedly on my door. When I answered, she brushed by me and entered my room saying “cleaning cleaning” she grabbed the air conditioning remote and turned it off then ran over and opened the curtains. She then just stood there and stared at me repeating “cleaning cleaning”. I wasn’t prepared to leave right away but she was persistent. If you stay multiple days you will have to leave at 10am for the day. I read a lot of the comments about the woman being rude but I didn’t find her rude. She only speaks Japanese, and a few English words, so communicating can be difficult. It’s a great experience staying in an old traditional Ryokan. Maybe only stay 1 night
- Maria (10/5): First onsen in the country side was a completely delight - First onsen, great experience in the middle of the country side. Amazing hosts and lovely village
