Guest Reviews
- Siu Chiu (1/5): - The hotel had nice surroundings The staff & lack of facilities. The staff accused my son & I of losing our room key when they had put it back in the wrong key slot. It was an unpleasant experience. The place was steeped in outdated British tradition (like dressing up for dinner), stuffy & would not be to everyone's liking.
- Kay (5/5): -
- Patrick (10/5): - Nostalgie
- Nour (5/5): -
- Chowdhury (9/5): Superb -
- Knill (9/5): A charming experience with thoughtful touches - “A charming experience with thoughtful touches”
All the extra touches made this stay special — from the water bottle placed in the bed to the welcoming tea on arrival. The gardens were absolutely stunning, and I loved staying somewhere with such rich history, especially knowing the Queen had visited. The bar was well priced, and overall, the ‘Little England’ atmosphere was exactly what I hoped for. A truly memorable experience. No fridge, mould in bathroom ceiling due to no fan.
- Phillip (6/5): A fascinating historical experience but poorly managed as a hotel. - The property’s historic nature is the main draw, and it means into this reputation. A wonderful sense of history. The rooms were sub-standard at this price point. I wanted to take a bath but the tub was chipped and not so clean. The service was very patchy; it seemed that management was lacking. There were lots of rules (fair as it’s a members club) but I did not feel very welcome. I understand the tie and jacket requirement, but we were alone in the dining room, and it all felt a bit on the decline.
The pricing is also curious. They charge for a single glass of filter water at meals - this nickel-and-dime approach is inappropriate at what should be a fine hotel. And beware that 35% is automatically added to food bills - which is an extortionate surprise at the end.
- Diya (10/5): Excellent experience! - At exactly 7:15 pm each evening, the club delivers hot water bottles to your room! That just made my day! A very cold building indeed as much heating possible is needed! The building being old is very cold. That was uncomfortable.
- Dakers (10/5): Thoroughly enjoyable - A fantastic piece of history nestled in the hills and tea plantations of Sri Lanka. The staff here go above and beyond to make your stay special and are all very helpful and smiley/ friendly.
The breakfast is an amazing selection with large portions and the food in general is delicious with a good variety of cuisine.
There are some rules in terms of dress code but frankly I think this is refreshing and being surrounded by guests and staff that take pride in their appearance and want to have special evenings on their holiday was a nice change from the casual flip flops, vests and shorts you often see nowadays.
The character and history along with the staff made the place a great stay.
- Christopher (9/5): i much enjoyed my stay - Great
- Bala (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jarl (8/5): Very comfotable and nice - Breakfast fantastic
- Hamilton (10/5): Exceptional -
- Louise (9/5): Superb - The location was fabulous, good old fashioned hospitality at its best , really was like stepping back in time.. even to having hot water bottles put in our beds! A really enjoyable stay Due to it being quite wet that day our room seemed a little damp , but probably could be expected in an old house like this .
- Eiizabeth (8/5): A real piece of history - We stayed here for the old world experience and that is what you get when you stay there. Our huge room overlooking the beautiful garden had a massive bed and was comfortable. No modern fittings of course. The staff varied, some friendly but others really too formal. My husband's borrowed jacket and tie looked perfect and the formal dining was fun. Food quite good. Breakfast ok too. We really felt we had stepped back in time. There was a starchiness about the service. A few more smiles would help.
- Judy (8/5): Loved the gardens and room was lovely - Staff were amazing ! Hot water bottle in our bed and bedtime biscuits . Breakfast was delicious and set us up for the day A little formal and rules were interesting
- Caroline (5/5): Old-fashioned colonial values, which have their upsides and downsides - The hotel's location was central and dramatically framed against a hill behind, with the town's famous golf course below. The large gardens were immaculate, with food grown for the hotel, and there is some charm in a formality now largely gone in Britain, even if the place is a little frayed. Although I had hoped for - and thought I had booked - a room in the main hotel, my modern room was large and comfortable and, like so many others, I appreciated the hot water bottle and bed time cookies. Many of the staff were charming and informative, especially Hashim, who has been there for many years and does a little tour of the front of house. The hotel also arranged a car to pick me up at Nanu Oya station. Room HV2, in the furthest corner of the modern Hill View wing at the back of the hotel would be more accurately named Hedge View as that was almost all I could see from my window. Behind the large hedge was the hotel's water treatment plant, which made a loud churning noise every 20 mins or so like a very enthusiastic Olympic swimmer doing 20 lengths of the crawl right outside my window, so sleep was nigh-on impossible. I asked to be moved and was shown an even worse room opposite, with nothing but views over the service wings roofs and the noise of their large air-con units.
While jackets and ties are provided to male diners who fail to bring such in order to enter the formal dining room, the policy on female attire is rather more arbitrary and no such help to conform was offered. I was no less smartly dressed than some others (ok, not in the dress i had brought as it was so cold) and the hotel was far from full on a Tuesday evening, but I was the sole person banished to the "casual" dining room in a back room downstairs, where I had to wait 40 minutes for my simple order to arrive (with the wrong salad), sitting alone in complete silence as if i were in detention. Not a happy or hospitable experience.
- Mitchell (9/5): Superb -
- Calum (9/5): Superb - An authentic british experience. Quiet, calm and relaxing. The reception staff didn’t seem particularly friendly.
- Flynn (10/5): Exceptional -
- Raymond (10/5): Beautiful heritage property in Central Nuwara Eliya. - This is a beautiful heritage property in the middle of Nuwara Eliya. Despite the location it is very quiet as it is set in large gardens well back from any noisy roads.
The room we had was spacious and very comfortable. There was also a large attached bathroom with everything you might need. The view over the garden was wonderful.
Breakfast is served in the large dining area complete with all the original fixture and fittings. There's also a large lounge and old fashioned bar and most of the walls in the building are adorned with lovely old black and white photographs. The place has a lovely atmosphere.
All the staff were helpful and friendly.
The breakfast was ordered from the menu and was delicious.
We have stayed here before, during COVID times when we were virtually the only guests there. But it's equally a very pleasant stay even when full.
I would highly recommend it even though it is pretty expensive. The old rooms vary a lot in size for the same price so it's worth checking which room you are being allocated.
- Annie (8/5): Great spot amazing staff but a bit basic - Fascinating place to stay... as a Brit always slightly mixed feelings about staying somewhere with colonial roots but so interesting... great location and wonderful staff. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and they even put hot water bottles in the beds !! Food was alright but not amazing... and small portions. Probably on the whole the Hill Club is over priced as it's interesting to stay there but a bit basic
- Anthony (7/5): I last stayed here 45 years ago and not much has changed ! In other words it needs an upgrade. - A good location in serious need of an upgrade and probably refurbishment.
Food average and could be upgraded.
Very willing staff.
- Paul (9/5): Superb -
- Olive (5/5): Passable - The barman was lovely and very helpful as was the woman on reception. Staff who attended the fire were also v good. Grounds were beautiful. Breakfast takeaway was good. Hot water bottle was very welcome. Other reviews had said this was equivalent to 3* elsewhere which is true. It is a very dated hotel in need of major investment and overhaul. It belongs in a different century. Staff are trying but facilities are poor. Having to give 4 hrs notice for dinner is just not acceptable. There were iron marks on the carpet in our room and mould around wash hand basin. I've stayed in much nicer places for much less money. I don't like to be negative but this place is overrated
- Mrtngls (8/5): Very good -
- Niya (10/5): Exceptional -
- M (7/5): Good -
- Julia (6/5): we enjoyed our stay but it was a bit disappointing, not helped by continual rain. - we were there for new years eve. The food was ok, the meat very tough but it was a fun night. the service was too slow and a bit chaotic. we asked for more logs for the fire 3 or 4 times before they arrived. At breakfast both days the tea or coffee came when we had almost finished our food.
- Siri (1/5): Sh*tty experience at a sh*tty hotel / members- only club - Booked it because, I liked the fact that it is in the best location with great views and positive reviews Here you go - my first negative review.. lol..
The credit goes to the one and only- The Hill Club !!
The staff were lame enough not to inform us the rules of the club before check-in. Instead, after waiting for a check-in the gentleman dressed in a suit & boot attire, came to us and told us in a very fake accent about the rules.
I am not sure why a review was asked and if the club caters to members-only why are they on booking.com in the first place? They should just keep their business private instead of troubling far distance traveller's with their arrogant rules.
I do not mind changing hotels if it's an unavoidable situation but a man at the reception was making a mockery of our booking at this property. Instead of asking us what they can help us with, he was immediately insisting that we move to Ariliya hotel. They did not give us an option to choose either. They had pre-determined that we move to Ariliya (completely opposite experience there- the staff were very gentle and approachable and not arrogant).
Very disappointed with their behavior and he was prompting for a colonial experience in a sarcastic way. There was no trace of an apology either. Shamelessly, they moved us out after a tiring day and after checking our passports because the bookings would have been prioritized for members-only and it was not communicated to us.
My feedback is don't get surprised if ypu would have missed to follow a colonial rule, as there is a lack of consistency between the website and the club rules, and the situation was handled poorly without showing any empathy.
Whether the review matters or not, it should be known to likeminded others who have more expectations about the nice things this hotel claims to offer.
- Georgie (2/5): Disappointing - Quite rude staff and very snobby but nice tennis court Most of it I didn’t really like
- Manav (9/5): Superb -
- Raquel (8/5): Very good - Amazing location and friendly staff
- Abir (7/5): Good - The formal dinner set up was fun. The food could be much better, especially breakfast.
- Michael (4/5): discrimination at best on a public domain - the history of the building is interesting Hotel.asked for my wife's passport I was told seeing she was sri lankan if she didn't have e a foreign passport she wouldn't be allowed to stay or enter premises.
Surely we are past these days and views that's racism and discrimination. I thought we had all moved past these times but oh no Hill Club maintains this view and for that reason advertising on a public domain it is a joke and shouldn't be allowed.
- Chamila (5/5): Not enjoyable! - Beautiful gardens Staff is very stiff and no display of world known Sri Lankan hospitality and warmth
- Sally (8/5): A fabulous place to stay with genuine old world charm and exceptional service and food. It’s like stepping back 100 year - A really special place - it’s like stepping back in time with great service and old world charm.
Dinner and breakfast were excellent and the bed was extremely comfortable.
I highly recommend taking a look around the kitchen garden. The gardeners were delighted to show us everything they were growing for the restaurant.
I highly recommend staying - and borrowing a jacket and tie for dinner. The formality of it wouldn’t suit everyone- but we found it really charming.
- Alia (1/5): Horrendous. - A disgusting and terrible experience from start to finish. Please avoid this hotel the reviews are bought and not representative of the reality
Management do nothing to address your concerns. Dirty towels no hot water holes in the bed linen cold food which caused us to get sick. When raising this with management they do nothing to help or offer any solution to the issues raised
It’s an out dated regime run by unprofessional staff and management. They thought we took the hotel key and locked us in the property and would not even let us go out they instructed security to not let us out at the main gate. We had to call the police and file a complaint to be let out even the police said they were shocked at why they locked us in and didn’t just speak to us about it. There is nothing to like in this property but everything to dislike. It ruined our experience in nuwara Eliya and there are so many lovely properties to stay in please book the grand hotel we went there for dinner after we were served cold inedible food. I have added pics for proof. The key was most likely hidden by their own staff in an attempt to extort money from tourists. Stay away
- Miraal (7/5): Good -
- Janet (5/5): Members welcome hotel guests not! - Location Stuffy rules, outdated accommodation, rude reception staff. If you want to sell as a private members club keep it like that but don’t accept hotel guests
I wanted to stay here due to the hotels history but it needs a serious refurb and reception need to say at least good morning and good eve
We were asked for payment before I could even drop my
Bags and our driver was called to ask where we were as we owed a bar tab for 1 beer which we couldn’t pay as no one was available even though we informed reception we were going out for dinner! Considering that all our luggage was in the room why call the driver to find out where we were!! Generally at a hotel pay on departure not before u have even had the chance to sit down after a long day
- Lakshay (7/5): Good -
- Abdulaziz (9/5): Superb -
- Simina (8/5): Be careful with Wifi as it has security issues! - Staff is very friendly in general
Had a tour of the property
Location is very quiet
Beautiful property
Heater in the room -Atention!!! Security of Wifi has been breached, meaning personal and financial data are in danger when you connect to the Wifi at the property . I have showed and sent proof to the reception that their Wifi password was leaked and is trying to install viruses and steal information from computer and phones, yet the reception did not say anything. This is the most outrageous thing when you think that most people that stay here have a lot of money and when you connect to wifi you put in danger their personal data and financial data. Take action now!!
- bed sheets had holes in them
- i paid for a garden view, not back of a the building view
- Lita (6/5): Historic property with a beautiful garden which could use a little fix up - A stunning garden, filled with beautiful plants. Lovely breakfast. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. Excellent location. The property is really outdated. It was very cold in our room (even with the heater), so taking showers was very unpleasant.
- Henry (6/5): Quite a disappointment, considering the opportunities offered by the superb building and setting. We would have liked mu - Historic buildings. Atmosphere. Gardens. Open log fires. Rather disorganised. Formality is ok, but not stiff formality. General lack of warm behaviour. Slow service. Staff seemed nervous and under trained. Cold food. All this in contrast to other hotels we have used.
- Janine (8/5): Wonderful stay in a beautiful old colonial building - The building and property itself being an old colonial place was well kept and maintained. Loved the billiards room and the old dining room nothing
- Yannick (2/5): Very disappointing. Felt like staying at the hotel in Shining - The hotel is above the road and on the outskirts of the town meaning it is quiet at night. The gardens are also incredibly well kept. This hotel has clearly not embraced the fact that they are now welcoming guests from an exterior circle with various backgrounds and financial levels. That means that many so-called hospitality touch points with guests must be improved urgently if you wish to be considered as a serious option for tourists.
For example:
You should focus on your guests' well-being first and foremost, instead of constantly worrying that they wear the right clothes from 7pm or adhere to the Club rules. You can't open up to external guests (mainly for financial reasons I presume if I refer to the derelict state of the room we were in! Refer to it below) and at the same time make them feel unwelcome. We were reminded 5 times in total about "club rules" and especially dresscode, including 3 times prior to our arrival !! Please be aware that guests who are not members are not necessarily stupid or badly educated. We felt belittled and considered as "smaller value people" which is highly insulting considering our rather good education. This was specifically the case when we visited the bar well before the "7pm threshold" and were greeted by the barman who merely said "here is the main bar where you need to be dressed appropriately from 7pm..." Here we go again!! Furthermore how can you possibly require from guests to be dressed appropriately yet allow in-house walk-ins from non-resident guests with flip-flops and shorts during our breakfast for example??
The room we were in was awful and so old it was an embarrassment. Cables hanging from the walls, stained carpets, shower with traces of limestone preventing water from running correctly, coat hangers recycled from all types of areas, views on storage buildings with pipes falling from the roof outside....honestly not good. The only thing appreciated was the turn-down service that provides you with a warm blanket heater...
- Richard (10/5): By far the best, even places that cost twice the amount! - The food is exceptional, the best I have had in SriLanka. The grounds are wonderfully maintained and the location perfect. The staff are very kind and helpful. It is an old club and the rooms are quite original and the club is not over restored
- Iain (9/5): Stylish and Special! - This is a beautiful example of style and luxury from a bygone era. It reminds me very much of Royal Naval Wardrooms and Service from the last century. Staff are extremely engaging, attentive and clearly well trained. The gardens are beautifully maintained and presented and the whole establishment offers a wonderful glimpse of the past beautifully blended with modern touches.
Dressing for dinner in the main restaurant and bar still required! Really nothing that I didn't enjoy during my short stay.
- Damon (10/5): Exceptional -
- Barbara (7/5): Good stay at a beautiful location. - The old colonial heritage is beautiful, and especially the location is very good. The staff is friendly and the garden is super well maintained and beautiful. Some parts of the hotel need some renovation. We were in one of the renovated rooms and those rooms are really nice.
The wifi can be improved as well. It seems not really necessary that you have to login every time you enter the hotel again.
- Margaret (9/5): Superb -
- Casinader (4/5): In need of a refurbishment that will continue to keep the hotels character and charm. - Very courteous staff and urbane clientele. Location fabulous and the old world charm nostalgic from childhood holidays spent here . A la carte dinner was excellent . One of the two rooms had an awful smell of something possibly dead up in the ceiling and the Manager advised if this but no offer was forthcoming to change rooms . Bathrooms very poorly repaired and finished and clearly done by amateur handy persons.
- Steve (9/5): Take yourself back in time! - The Hill Club is steeped in colonial history and provided us with a special experience, from playing snooker on one of the full-size tables, to a formal dinner followed by a drink by the log fire all rounded off with hot water bottles at bed-time!
The guide-books warn you that you will need to dress up for dinner, but that is not the full story. If you don't have the required jacket and tie, they will help you out. In any event, there is an "informal' bar and 'informal' restaurant with the same offerings and prices. I was very impressed with my set menu dinner, and my wife was happy with her vegetarian a la carte choice.
There is a large lawn in front of the hotel surrounded by colourful, manicured, flower-beds.
If you are staying at the hotel, the golf course just below is well-worth a visit as well. It was founded around the same time and has its own interesting history. We enjoyed a very good English breakfast there. It is only a 5 minute walk if you enter the grounds via the workshop entrance. All good.
- Richoakes (7/5): Whilst clean and spacious, it's like going back in time! - Like going back in time to UK Colonial Rule, quite the experience.
Room was spacious and clean & good, central location. Staying in character, it's a little bit outdated and felt a little stuffy at times.
- Kay (8/5): Very nice stay - Very good service and beautiful gardens. Our tour from Hashim was very educational.
- Roy (8/5): A truly authentic, cultural experience - A truly authentic, colonial gentleman's club with a lot of original features. Very atmospheric. I much preferred it to the Grand Hotel, which is virtually next door. The grand may be grander, but lacks the Hill Club's authenticity and sense of history. Also the staff at the Hill Club are very good. Especially pleasant was the guided tour of the premises. Having to wear and jacket and tie for dinner was a pleasant eccentric touch: they provide the jacket and tie free of charge. The hot water bottle at night was a nice touch. The facilities are dated, but for me that was the major attraction. I wanted authenticity and that's what I got. It was so much better than some standard, characterless international hotel.
- Sohiny (10/5): I time travelled to a different era and loved it. - I loved everything, including the respect for old-school decorum. It was a pleasure to have silence all around for a change, instead of the usual humdrum of a hotel. Retaining all original architecture and components, the place had all modern facilities. The staff was very courteous and helpful. My favourite touch was the provision of hot water bottles in bed, which kept the chills away. I had to keep signing in to the wifi a few times a day. That could be looked into.
- Shlomy (1/5): Bad - The only good thing was a manager named Malo, when I asked to speak the manager, he came and spoke to us kindly and made sure we left with a smile, pampered us with everything he could including food and thanks to him we didn't get up and leave the hotel that evening I don't usually write down a disrecommendation, but in this hotel it is simply necessary, the staff is condescending, everything is extra charge, for example we received a coffee bag that the child dropped and I asked for another, they also asked for money,
From seven in the evening we musted be in formal clothes (tailored pants, tie, jacket) otherwise no You can enter the main dining room to the lobby or the bar, which made us stay in the rooms, in addition, since we were not dressed formally (because we are on vacation) they put us in the dining Which puts a 2-star hotel to shame, we were alone, the tables were not set, the menu was poor, there was no variety of food, we just couldn't get there!! The rooms do not have a refrigerator, the shower is old with an unstable stream of water that boils and suddenly gets cold and boils again.
- Robert (7/5): Enjoyed my stay. Hotel is obviously old and in need of modernisation. - The history is amazing.
Food was fantastic and the staff are very attentive.
It was cold and raining on the day and the bedroom was cold. Came back after dinner to find the bed turned down and a couple of hot water bottles in the bed. Nice touch. Room was small and it was difficult to walk around the bed.
- Joanne (9/5): Great experience to stay here - A gorgeous late 1800’s building that has been preserved well. It’s a true depiction of how the club has been run from the early days, however women are allowed in the front door now! I would have love to have seen it in its ‘hay day’. Staff were all extremely friendly and helpful, even lending my husband a jacket, tie and pants so we could dine in the main dining hall and mixed drinks room. We also had one of the best meals on our holiday here. All the produce (except meat) are grown on the grounds and were all beautifully fresh and well cooked. It wasn’t a cheap experience but we’re glad we had it, and was a great find for a last minute booking. Room was very good with a comfy bed and good bathroom. Room view was limited but the building itself more than made up for it.
- Yann (8/5): Very good -
- M (7/5): Beautiful if you’re planning to stay in the gardens however we would most likely not visit again - Gorgeous on the outside, and beautiful gardens. Restaurant staff were helpful The rooms were disappointing, not what would be expected from a 5 stars hotel.
Exaggerated application of rules makes it uncomfortable as most people don’t take with them a suit and a tie on a holiday which made it difficult to visit a few restaurants and bars in the hotel. There were no sizes for borrowing.
The reception was rushed and not friendly
- Lucy (9/5): Historical accommodation. - The historical aspect, being able to have a cream tea on the lawn was very special. Loved the old pictures and nice guided tour of the hotel. The stuffed animals on the wall, sad memories of what the colonial Brits were not good at.
- Sushant (10/5): Exceptional - location was perfect , Breakfast and Dinner were very good , and the service was excellent , I would love to come back
- Per (10/5): Great stay - Great N/A
- Fatema (10/5): Exceptional - Pros: Stunning location. Like a dream. We were allotted a chalet but there was an issue with the hot water supply, so they upgraded us to a suite. Again, very dreamy. The staff was super friendly, welcoming, and overall, super pleasant stay. Cons- We waited for a tour of the property every time we requested it. Eventually, my husband gave up and didn't bother to wait. Everything was perfect otherwise, just this one thing made it a little bitter.
- Darrel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nicolo (7/5): A hotel with a very interesting story, nice food, but very decadent. - The room and the atmosphere were really like in the first decades of the 1900’s.
The food was really good, not only compared to other places in Sri Lanka but in general. The property is old. The room was a bit dirty and the toilet was very ruined, as per the towels and the sheets. It’s not a 5-star hotel in my honest opinion.
The suit rule to enter the dining room, even if in a way is funny and characteristic, it’s a bit annoying when you have to were others’ jackets and tie.
- Federica (8/5): Charming, old fashioned experience! - The hotel is lost in time, you feel in the 40’s and it is a very charming. We enjoyed two nights stay, fine service, great experience!
- Girishkant (10/5): A very unique and wonderful experience - Very good Breakfast and Dinner. We had Dinner in Hotel in Formal dining room, the Hotel provided jackets and ties on Loan. It was very authentic British Era Dining experience. Rooms were a bit small but they were cosy so no complaints
- Sam (8/5): A genuine relic from colonial Ceylon that seems unaware that Britain left in 1948. All the staff made us feel welcome an - A museum piece which you are invited to enjoy (so long as you have your jacket and tie!) The packed lunch breakfast could have been better.
- Sathyamurthi (9/5): Superb - The hotel is unique to say the least. It is a British Srilankan heritage hotel(rather Club). Really good size room with a BIG bed, may be bigger than a king size. Food was really good. The staff was very friendly, informative and accommodating. Some of really interesting food menu items needs 4 hours heads up, had we known before we would have ordered it upfront. Sadly we missed it.
- Ashanee (8/5): Very pleasant staff always eager to please. - Beautiful hotel. Great location. There was gale force winds and all the doors and windows rattled the whole night.
Didn’t get a good nights sleep.
- Visagini (8/5): charming, cold and beautiful stay! - Amazing vibe, super cool experience. lovely food at the restaurant and i am a huge snooker fan so i loved it! definitely recommend. loved the hot water bottle touch at night and chocolates. if you’re looking for a charming well kept property this is the one! bathroom could be improved and DVD player didn’t work.
- Kurien (8/5): Very good -
- Farazdak (9/5): If ever revisit Colombo Clock Inn will be my first choice - Breakfast was wholesome and plenty. Maybe the menu could have been larger. Quicker service when there is a crowd.
- Sir (10/5): Exceptional - Superlatives pour, as they must for this piece of living history, still a members club for well-heeled Colombo society, set in the lush wooded Highlands of Sri Lanka. For Brits the portraits of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip (Churchill props up the bar), borrowable ties and jackets for dinner in the formal dining room, billiard rooms, tea in the reading room browsing Whitakers Almanac from 1956, hot water bottles, sweeping views (and weather) indistinguishable from those from a country house in Shropshire, render the experience surreal. Dinner was a great spread, the Sri Lankan breakfast a must. Stacey provided a warm and professional greeting, ask too for Hasim's short tour of the public areas. All the staff were unfailingly courteous and helpful. Room number 3 was glorious, well appointed and maintained with a large bathroom, all looking over the estate's perfectly groomed parkland.
- Bharat (4/5): Disappointing -
- Sarah (5/5): Satisfactory. - Beautiful peaceful location yet only a five minute walk into town. The free historical tour lasting approximately twenty minutes.
Free loan of jackets and ties for dinner. Being asked to settle our bill on arrival at check-in “because you booked via Booking.com”
Having to pay for pre-dinner and dinner drinks before leaving the dining room, rather than upon check-out the following morning. I only had my phone with me for dinner, and Applepay not working. I had to leave the dining room to collect my wallet from the room safe.
We especially didn’t like the 35% tax and service charge added to all extras!
- Seevalee (9/5): Superb -
- Chulan (8/5): Very good - Excellent location
Easy and welcoming check in
Good value
Great if u like a Club experience.
Super dining room
Helpful staff Small room but perfect for one person, dated bathroom
Fixed menu, ok if u book for one or two nights as most do
- Abraham (5/5): At cost higher than the Waldorf in NYC, it was hardly worth the stay - Food and extras. The letter from Booking.Com, which is with me for production when required, offered me the room at $517.00 total for the accommodation, for three days. When I arrived at the hotel, I paid $699.00 which was the amount required by the host. The difference is considerable. It does look like the marketing Company showed a reduced price to induce a sale.
- Stefan (9/5): Old world stay - We chose to stay here for the historic feeling and because they had twin rooms. It's a lovely place. Wonderful breakfast. The beds were comfortable and the hot water bottle was cozy. Very good service and a special care from our room boy. Garden was beautiful! We couldn't eat in the restaurant because we didn't have long pants. (men) But then again, that is part of the old world charm that they keep certain standards. We found plenty of places to eat in town so it wasn't really a problem.
- Renee (9/5): Charming hotel in Nuwara Eliya. - Lovely colonial hotel. Warm comfortable rooms and walking distance to town. This hotel is full of character. Pack your Sunday best for after 7pm as you’re required to dress up for dinner and the bar (men can borrow a jacket and tie). It’s all part of the charm of the hotel. Staff were very attentive and helpful. Would definitely recommend for your stay in Nuwara Eliya. N/a
- Catherine (3/5): Poor - Food was OK but nothing special considering the hotel star rating. Staff were quite strange too formal and restrictions about what to wear in each bar. Customer service was lacking from attentiveness at the bar etc. Tea way too strong and we sent it back several times. Also not hot.
- Anzhelika (2/5): Didn't live up to expectations. In the photo view from an improved room - Historical place Thank you for We had a very bad experience at the hotel. Although I warned about my arrival, no one wrote that I needed to use the second gate. As a result, we stood for a long time in front of the first gate, where there was no staff. Further, the impolite staff did not want to let us in the second gate. Now about the room. It does not correspond to the description on Booking.com. Terrible view from the window of the roofs of the buildings, although the view of the garden is indicated. The hotel's deception in the room description. There are no ironing facilities. There is no seating area. There is no work desk. But there are three beds.
- Phyllis (2/5): Avoid the Hill Club! - Delivered on old world British charm. Tour buses (4 of them) arriving at 4.55am, stopping virtually underneath our bedroom window (literally 30 feet away) to pick up Chinese tourists. Noise and motors running for 20 minutes. Complained to Secretary/Manager the next day. He was totally unapologetic and offered no form of compensation whatsoever. For UD$145 per night in Sri Lanka far, far better is expected. Other than that, service is very slow. Waited 30 minutes from time of ordering for soup to arrive. Finally, many of the wait staff have very poor English, and are poorly organised by their managers. I strongly recommend that you avoid this establishment.
- Yuan (10/5): Incredible experience and price-performance ratio great! - Incredible experience in Nuwara Eliya! Good location and just nearby the famous Grand Hotel and Victoria Park and has a path to visit. Hill Club is a historical building and worth you spend one-hour to walk around and insight. Room is comfortable, breakfast is good, price-performance ratio is better than Grand Hotel as you can spend high tea and visit the garden there from Hill Club. Staff is kind and helpful. Highly Recommended! None.
- Adam (8/5): Beautiful property - High tea, beautiful building, gardens and room. Gym very average, tennis available
- Viviana (10/5): Exceptional - Everything
- Sarang (8/5): Good stay, great staff! - Location and staff Maintenance required of beds
- Stephen (10/5): We loved our stay and felt pampered. - The grounds are spectacular. The staff is excellent. The location is fabulous. It’s a little old and outdated but heck, it’s an old English club and that’s what makes it so fun and charming.
- Kanishka (1/5): Bad -
- Ramm (10/5): Excellent stay with excellent service - Quintessentially English gentleman’s club converted to a hotel but has maintained the old values. Well done.
- Hugh (6/5): Pleasant -
- Viresh (9/5): Loved it. - 1) the property 2) the service 3) the wonderful bartender 4) the location 5) the concept of wearing a tie and jacket for drinks & dinner 6) the old world charm 1) sitting out whilst breakfast did not get tea
- Mark (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent service. Great atmosphere.
