Guest Reviews
- mollyskye_ (8/5): Definitely recomend, value 4 money - We booked parkside to host a baby shower,
We did the decorations and parkside provided sandwiches and home made chips, the sandwiches were fresh well filled and plenty of them with a good variety of fillings, chips homemade and also plentiful...well done to the staff,
Only down side is the decor is looking a little tyred..
- Englishman-in-theUSA (2/5): The positive reviews must have stayed someplace else - this place is a dive - I accidentally ended up staying here again after a previous mediocre experience and not recognising the hotel name on the booking site until it was too late. This stay was markedly worse than the last, hence the rating. The condition of the room was poor with dirty, worn and sticky surfaces. The shower had a tile hanging off the wall and the shower itself was freezing no matter how long it was left running. All I got from the staff was a "sorry about that". Hotels.com ended up refunding part of the stay as the hotel refused to do anything. The rooms look nothing linke the publicity pictures - don't be fooled.
- flibberygibbit (8/5): Great Sunday dinner! - Had Sunday lunch here for the first time and it was lovely. Everything was perfectly cooked, hot, tasty and excellent value for money. Front of house staff could be a bit happier but someone from the kitchen came out and they were lovely. Would recommend if you are in the area.
- Dream01392756275 (10/5): Hidden gem - What a hidden gem. Room was very nice, clean and very comfortable bed. Food was fantastic, huge portions. Staff very welcoming and friendly. Location great for the western fells. Easy to reach Ennerdale or Wastwater. No hesitation in recommending this hotel.
- Demcat (10/5): A very small cozy hotel - Very small hotel, only six rooms, very small staff, we had fun getting to know them. Very nice room and a very good dinner in their dining room. It’s like having your own private hotel. The cook was new but between him and the manager we worked out a great dinner and breakfast. We are walking the Coast to Coast trail.
- Rob (4/5): - On arrival we were first told the chef had walked out and we wouldn’t get any meals! Then Emily and Janice stepped in and did evening service and a meal, then Janice came back and did breakfast in the morning. Overall a very surreal experience which was just ok in the end. I imagine most people would have complained and asked for a refund!
- Ruth (8/5): - A clean and welcoming local hotel. Good facilities. Great value for money. We loved the cooked breakfast. Would def think of staying again. Quiet surroundings. Good facilities. Places to sit, enjoy the bar. We had a sofa in our room to relax.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Really bad - Do not believe the photographs on hotels.com. The place is very run down and nothing like pictured. The furniture was filthy and had paint peeling, tiles were hanging off the wall in the shower, and the shower itself dispensed only ice cold water.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Just ok - Location is not very central if you are staying to visit lake district. Breakfast was good. We reached late around 10.30 pm. It was good that l called the hotel beforehand. They told us no staff is available at the hotel after 8 pm but they left our keys at the reception. We had 2 rooms. Door handle for one room was broken and it will not open. Tried to contact the emergency no. written at reception but no reply. We struggled with key and door and managed to open door after 30 mins.
We were not offered room cleaning. I asked on 2nd day and room was cleaned but bed linens were not changed. And used bath mats were removed and not replaced.
- Danxing (6/5): - In order to prepare for my long hike the next day, the host helped me prepare breakfast earlier. Thanks so much.
- Amanda (10/5): - It’s a small pub with great staff & the rooms are well appointed
- X598HFpaulo (8/5): Great food - Hotel rooms comfortable, clean and the staff are extremely friendly. Head chef Damien knows his stuff and is eager to please the individual as the food was excellent. Ask the staff for local activities as not much in the immediate vicinity.
- malcolmlD5773HG (10/5): Had a lovely meal last night.Staff pleasant and informative huge thanks to Chef Damian for food recommendations. Thanks - We had a lovely meal here last night. With personal recommendations from new chef Damian we all had a great meal, both tasty and piping hot. Both bar staff and chef went above and beyond to make sure we had a good time. Can’t wait to make a return visit.
- jonnyholly1966 (10/5): Gem - Great stay up in Cumbria as working away needed an overnight stay and found this gem spacious en suite room bar and eating area / restaurant and good menu options food great thanks chef Damion slept great comfy bed great linen and pillows great breakfast and hosts
Easy parking
- Jon (10/5): - Great place bar & restaurant great food sleep and breakfast thanks Damion and Emily
- 476gemmae (4/5): Totally over charged - Picked up some takeout Sunday lunches on mothers day . Couldn't tell the difference between a child's portion and the adults as they both looked the same. Food was bland and tasteless. Tiny portions and everything overcooked. Was charged at sitting in price even though it was a takeaway . Totally overcharged fpr what we got. Was very disappointed . Will not be returning .
- flibberygibbit (10/5): Excellent family meal - Booked a table for 4 for dinner. Despite being local, none of our party had ever eaten here before but had heard good things, so we thought we would give it a go. All of us had something different, and none of us were disappointed. The food was hot and tasty, and the portions were huge, and overall it was excellent value for money. All of us agreed that we would definitely eat here again!
- Helga (6/5): - Staff and host friendly and helpful. Room clean, but no wardrobe or hairdryer.
Property tired looking inside and out. No lighting in carpark.
- TheBloodhound (10/5): Great pie - Very surprised by this place.
Really nicely done out and has a lovely modern feel. Very spacious.
The steak pie I had was absolutely bang on. A proper pie. Up there with the Shepherds Arms and better than the Fox and Hounds.
We will visit again.
- AndrewT288 (10/5): So much better than I expected 👍🏻 - Booked at short notice for a stop over around a dinner function. Really pleasantly surprised, staff were friendly and really helpful, they gave me a nicer room than I booked, it was clean, tidy, had everything I needed and was recently refurbished. Nothing was too much trouble , esp on our late return. Bar was alive and fun - without being “rude”
Breakfast was great with locally sourced ingredients. Went to put my head down on a quick turnaround - ended having a great time served by nice people - fair play
- 871curtiss (2/5): Do not book here! - Stayed here for 3 nights for work purposes.
The guy on reception was great, very helpful. The food was lovely. However I received abuse and this was the worst customer service experience of my life. On Thursday night the last night of my stay I could hear loud music with a lot of bass coming from downstairs which started around 7pm at 10:40pm I went down to the bar where the hotel owner and a female companion were drinking at the bar, I asked politely for the music to be turned down and I was simply told no. I went back to my room to try get sleep ready for my 5:30am alarm, thinking they’d maybe said no in a joking kind of way. Went back down at 11:15pm and asked again please can you turn the music down. This time I was told “pi$ off” unbelievable! Went back down a third time at midnight and asked again this time I got “fcuk off and go to sleep” which I said I couldn’t due to the noise, hearing 2 drunk people blasting and impersonating Leona Lewis - bleeding love is not something I’m able to sleep through. I stamped on my floor at 12:15AM and they shouted back up “Will you fcuk off” still can’t believe this is has happened never experienced anything like it! On top of this my colleague who was also staying had this same couple try to enter his room at 12:30AM frantically trying to get inside his room which woke him up he shouts “wrong room” and they leave …. Until 2:00AM when they try the same thing again!
Also the rooms were freezing all throughout the stay, avoid this place at all costs!
- Wilson (8/5): - Room was quite cold on arrival, however was soon rectified. No frills attached yet all you needed for a one night stay. Breakfast was excellent.
- Richard (8/5): - Nice clean hotel with friendly staff.
- Vanessa (10/5): - Quick checkin lovely room and great breakfast
- Sigin (10/5): - Really good
- jamiewG6215QA (10/5): Great B&B! - I stayed at Parkside for a friend's wedding and they were the perfect hosts. Gave me a great filling dinner on arrival and breakfast in the morning. The staff were all incredibly friendly and the room was clean and cosy. My only regret is that I didn't book for longer to explore the local area but if I go back I'd definitely stay with Parkside again!
- Robert (10/5): - Great stay. Very friendly staff. Restaurant was excellent
- William (8/5): - Room was and clean
- Arun Mohan (6/5): - Its value for money
- Kevin (8/5): A rough diamond, but brilliant for business travel - Amazing cancellation flexibility, good bed, powerful shower, decent food, lovely breakfast.
Could be a boutique hotel if they paid a bit more attention to the details (broken light bulbs, shower plug blocked, unfinished DIY in the bathroom, random nails sticking out of the wall, old oil/grease smells from the kitchen extractor fan, sucked into the bathroom) - someone had bothered to go around switching off every electric socket in the room - but not attended to the small details that someone staying there is interested in?
- T5210SEcg (10/5): Outstanding services - Outstanding and very clean rooms, 10/10 breakfast.
Luxurious comfy super king bed with lovely white pressed linens and towels you'd get from 4 or 5 star hotels!
Thanks John for hospitality. Excellent customer service !!!
I would recommend this hotel to anyone!
- Gordon (10/5): - Great accommodation and excellent value. Friendly and very helpful staff, rooms were very comfortable and quiet. Food was great.
- Samuel (10/5): Lovely find - Lovely find - have driven past it many times and never noticed. Will stay again.
- Abdul (10/5): Best place to stay in the area - Very nice and clean room with attached bath in reasonable price. Our 4 day trip is finished after this and trust me this is the best hotel we stayed in.
The owner was very nice and cane early in the morning to make breakfast and it was nice too.
Overall I recommend to stay here and whenever i’m in the area I will definitely booked it again.
- davidfV5272JA (2/5): Bad experience - What can I say about this place what the hell went wrong we used to go all the time since theres new owners in there its gone well down hill .food was shocking and burnt and the service was bad we booked at table for my daughters 18th birthday they never said nothing to her wish her a happy birthday or nothing made us feel really uncomfortable we left after the meal very bland we definitely won't be going back
- hannahg836 (10/5): Lovely stay.....would definitely go back! - Warm hospitality, perfect location for hiking, gorgeous scenery, lovely food and drinks all at fair prices....what more could you ask for! Would recommend and would definitely go again. Thank you to all @ Parkside for a lovely stay......
- Karl (8/5): Scaffel pike weekend - There to climb scaffel pike & this walking hotel was good for that. 30 mins from scaffel starting point bye car. 15 mins into Whitehaven. Good food & drink. Good sized rooms & parking. No problems
- Reece (10/5): - We had a great stay. Helpful staff. Tasty food options. Group of four lads for Scaffel Pike.
- Tim (8/5): Parkside Hotel - Room reasonably large. Good breakfast. Meals provided at pub reasonably priced. A long way from anywhere.
- christopherbB6753XX (10/5): Outstanding and surpassing expectations. - Outstanding and surpassing expectations.
Upon our arrival at Parkside, my wife, two children, and I were uncertain about what to anticipate. However, any uncertainties we had were quickly dispelled. The venue was both traditional and immaculate, and the landscape was breathtaking.
John, the manager, greeted us with a smile and a great deal of hospitality upon our arrival. The accommodations was immaculate, and we were able to check in without any issues. We reached out to John on numerous occasions during our stay to enquire about potential trekking routes and points of interest. John was delighted to contribute his expertise and offer his assistance. He was eager to assist, and it did not appear that he regarded us as demanding. He was generally willing to help. Although John was frequently preoccupied with restaurant duties, he consistently made time for a brief conversation and appeared at ease, despite the fact that he was responsible for ministering to a large number of individuals.
The chief is an expert in his field, and the cuisine was exceptional. The prices are also very reasonable, with the two meals for £20.00 during the week being exceptional value. The breakfast was exceptional, and the waiting times were acceptable. I would also suggest the carbonara, as it was very nice.
In conclusion, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will not hesitate to return. The Parkside hotel was clean, warm, and inviting, with outstanding customer service. The locals were friendly, the cuisine was delicious, and the views were phenomenal.
- Paul (8/5): - Comfortable bed. Friendly staff.
- BrodieIan (10/5): Nice stay - Spot on stay all be it a short one as we arrived late in afternoon, meals were spot on staff friendly, beds comfy and breakfast again really nice, thanks to the staff that were in that cleaned up after my elderly dad had a bad turn being sick (dehydrated) from a long day at golf
- Agnes (8/5): - WOULD STAY AGAIN.
- Vidiya (6/5): Disappointed - We traveled from London and stayed here for two nights. The purpose of the visit was to climb Scafell Pike. When we arrived there was a party going on which continued till 2 am. We were told that no dinner was available for us either. As the hotel is in a remote location there was no possibility of getting any food nearby. We were disappointed as we should have been informed about all that.
- DayTrip58689056766 (10/5): Unreal Sunday lunch. - Not really one for writing reviews but we feel this really deserves it. First time we’ve been since the new chef has been in and what a difference. Absolutely fantastic Sunday lunch meal. Staff exceptional, the chef came out to chat with customers and you couldn’t meet a nicer guy. Fantastic food, great staff, unreal value (kids eat free on a Sunday) this will be our new regular place. Amazing all round.
- downhillcyclist (10/5): Great Hotel - We stayed at Parkside Hotel, Cleator Moor, while walking the Coast to Coast Walk (organised by Contours). Lovely hotel. The hotel's football team had just won their division so the bar was jumping when we arrived - it would usually be much quieter. The manager / chef / head barman Matthew was very efficient coping with what might have been their busiest night of the year. Great dinner, great breakfast & Matthew even organised packed lunches for us.
- bruce (10/5): - Stayed here on first day of Wainright Coast to Coast walk. Good room and restaurant. Ate local lamb.
- Julie (10/5): - Quiet hotel room , clean an well presented. Adequate parking. Large comfortable bed with all amenities. Spacious bathroom, clean , great views from bedroom and drive or walk. Excellent breakfast with fresh ingredients. Attentive staff who went above for any concern and was knowlegeable about the local area.
- tim (8/5): Easter break - For the price over Easter no complaints. Food was excellent, great breakfast. 2 days walking so it was a good location for us.
Shame couldn’t get Sky sports but still enjoyed our stay. All staff very helpful.
- Greta (10/5): Lovely stay - When we arrived, the venue was still hosting a noisy christening, but we were assured it wouldnt be loud all evening, so we chilled in our nicely decorated and comfortable room. Once the party had departed, we had an enormous tasty meal with excellent service. Breakfast, again, was very generous. Lovely stay thanks.
- David (10/5): Will stay again - Loved our stay, staff were very friendly, food was excellent and room was comfy
- Alison (10/5): - The room was spacious and clean. Food was excellent and the staff made me feel like family ❤️
- Alison (8/5): - Everyone very friendly and helpful. Good food.
- barbara (10/5): - i stayed one night but everything was clean and comfortable . the food was very good and the staff are lovely . unfortunately i was there for a family funeral but the staff were lovely and nothing was too much trouble
- Derrick (10/5): Parkside - Comfortable
Friendly
- SUSAN (8/5): - excellent friendly staff
- Richard (10/5): - We had a lovely one night stay, using the hotel as a base for a walk into the hills above Ennerdale. The staff were really kind and friendly and the dinner and breakfast were excellent. It is great value for money and we would strongly recommend it.
- Arosha (8/5): - The rooms were nice clean, bathrooms were clean .But they didnt have shampoo only a shower gel which was a bit odd.the staff service could be better.the staff are nice and friendly but they could me more attentive towards their work.Breakfast was not good by any means the mushrroms were blunt, and even the sausages werent perfectly cooked that needs to improve for the price.
But all in all very good place .great price cause the rooms are very nice. And will definitely reccomend to another.Hope they will improve their breakfast meal.If that should be done Fabulous place for anyone including families.
- Dawn (8/5): - Lovely and relaxing
- David (6/5): - On the plus side, the food was good and the room was comfortable. Some other reviewers have mentioned traffic noise, but that was insignificant. Unfortunately the bedrooms are directly over the bar. Noise from music being played downstairs was very irritating and intrusive. Not ideal if you want peace and quiet.
- David (8/5): Stop Over - We were working in the area and needed somewhere to stay and this fit the bill perfectly.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Comfortable, good service from great staff.
- Leigh (10/5): - Great value for money ,friendly helpful staff and good food
- Peter (2/5): DIOBOLICLE - We arrived at 3am could not get in.
Young man in back carpark saying he was the chef there said he could let us in as he got the keys but if we could just wait until he smoked his joint(his words)and that he was stoned(his words) his language and innapropriate inuendos infront of a woman i can only believe he certainly was stoned.
After 8hour drive we just sat waiting we just needed a bed to sleep in.
We got to the door then he seemed to have lost his keys in the grass and started shouting someone called luke to let him in.
Stated he been chef in the hotel for 2years
We ended up having to get few hours sleep in the car as travel lodge and premier all booked up.
Went back to the hotel about 9.30 the following morning to see what had gone on and absolutely no one around front door open all the other doors locked up after sticking around for 10/15mins we left.
The hotel itself looked lovely and clean from what we see through the windows downstairs.
Awful experience.
We left cumbria that morning.NEVER AGAIN.
If they employ staff like that i honestly dont know how they are still trading
- Garry (8/5): - Excellent

- David (8/5): Nice hotel, great food. - Very welcoming staff, nice room and lovely food in the bar / restaurant. Hotel is on a road so some noise but didn’t bother me, would return.
- stuart (10/5): Excellent hotel for great price - Staff very friendly and helpful. Went out of their way and it was greatly appreciated. Food was great and good drink selection especially on draft.
Staff went out of their way to prepare a meal for us as kitchen was closed when we arrived late.
