Guest Reviews
- Elisemsanto (8/5): What you see is what you get (plus a few surprises) - The room we booked was EXACTLY what we saw in the photos. (Minus a bowl of fake fruit/flower arrangement)
We booked this hotel for three nights, mainly for the location and the beautiful patio where breakfast is served. Both of these things were wonderful and everything we could have asked for. The woman who served us breakfast in the mornings was incredibly kind and the breakfast was delicious! (Fresh-squeezed peach juice! The US needs to get with the program!)
The location of this hotel was unbeatable. We walked all around Arequipa and had the luxury of stopping back into the room to grab a water, take a quick nap, or grab a jacket whenever we wanted. We were less than 5 minutes away from most things we wanted to see/do.
I would like to preface this section by saying that it must be hard to fit such an old building with the modern trappings of hot water (for every room) and electricity. While these things were noteworthy, I certainly didn't think they outweighed the good things about this hotel.
We had a few minor issues with the hot water in our room. The heat would sort of go in and out as we showered. I wonder if it had to do with other guests showering/using water at the same time? That alone wasn't too bad, but we completely lost water pressure on our last morning in Arequipa (when we were hurrying to catch a bus!) When I say 'completely lost water pressure', I mean that the dials were at full-blast but we had a single trickle running from the showerhead, as if we had just turned it off and the excess water was draining out.
Another thing I'm not thrilled about was the fact that our electricity also went out on the last morning of our stay. It had occasionally gone out for about 5 minutes around siesta time in days prior, which wasn't really a big deal. This was over an hour of power loss though!
I saw one reviewer mention a staff member that creeped them out a bit, and I think this gentleman showed us to our room the first night we arrived. I personally didn't get a weird vibe, but my boyfriend did. Regardless, we didn't see him again after that evening.
I don't think the minor issues we experienced ruined our stay for us entirely, but if these things are dealbreakers for you, you may be happier staying somewhere else. This was more of a functional choice for us than a luxury one.
- KitCat_NL (6/5): - The people grom this hotel were very friendly. Our bags were taken up to the room, a light that did not work was fixed in no time, the bathroom was good — good shower too, location was brilliant - smack bang in the middle of old historic Arequipa.
What let this hotel down for me was breakfast. Instant coffee, no choice of juice, cheese or ham. Only butter, jam and scrambled eggs and bread rolls. This I thought wasn’t what I expected from a 3* hotel...
- Saulo (8/5): - Great location, right at Plaza de Armas, you can walk everywhere. It gets a little noise a the rooms are on one of the streets feeding to the plaza, but it did not bother us and during he night it seemed quite. This is a budget hotel, good enough to stay a night or two. Lots of steps here and there as the floors are not aligned, we played a game of up/down steps when coming and going to the room. Breakfast was basic, served outside with a nice view to the plaza. OK shower and clean room. There is a safe in the room, but no instructions (press the button inside, push a 4 digit code and press "A" (bottom left button) - then to open, push the code sequence and press the "B" button, on the bottom right.
- Ferreira (8/5): Ótima localização - Perto de tudo fizemos todos os passeios com muita facilidade.
- Scott (8/5): - Basic, clean, and a great location.
- Mr. Gonzales (8/5): Beautiful colonial style hotel - My wife and I had an excellent stay in this hotel. Berna, the receptionist in the morning, made our staying in Arequipa very pleasant. She fixed our trips to Colca and the suburbs of the city; however, when my wife requested to change the room because they didn’t look like the picture in Expedia, one of the staff’s increased our room price. By the way, location is great, right in front of the beautiful Plaza de Armas, and a few blocks from the Santa Catalina Monastery.
- phardog (2/5): It's a dump. - I stayed one night. The bed was hard. The hot water was sporadic. The room was noisy and there was no way to shut out the light from outside. I didn't sleep at all. The bedding was at least 20 years old. The carpet was at least 30 years old. It's a maze of rooms built into an old colonial building. Poor if any ventilation (smells). The staff is kind of creepy too. They charge an arm and a leg to send your laundry out. $2 for a single shirt, for example). Taxi's can't bring you to the door and even the neighbors won't know where it's at. You will end up dragging your luggage a couple of blocks.
- Leticia (6/5): Good hotel - The hotel is in the best site of the city, it has a beautiful varanda where you can find restaurants to eat while appreciate a wonderful view of the Plaza de Armas. The problems are that my no smoking room was filling up with smoke from others rooms, my bed was so old that the headboard was bending over my bed, totally loose, any movement in the bed would wake me up. The people that work there are very nice. They offer coca tea in the hall anytime you want it.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Luz Obando (8/5): Buena relación calidad precio - muy buena
- Emily (6/5): Convenient location - Room is basic but the location is excellent. While the layout of the floor plan is complicated, staff will help with your luggage.
- svr43 (8/5): Great Location - We stayed 3 nights at the suite facing the Plaza de Armas. The room is very spacious with very comfortable bed. The view to the Plaza was partial due to the arches that adorn the facade of this section of the square.
On the third night we had an incident where few musicians in the adjacent restaurant were playing and singing into the night. Luckily there was a vacant room in the back where we could move into and spend the rest of the night in (with no additional charge).
Good breakfast.
- Icon2013 (4/5): Good location, Strange staff - I found this hotel by passing, and stayed 2 nights. Hotel is located in main square, so easy to access anywhere. It is old hotel, complex architecture, but comfortable enough. The customer could have breakfast at the outside terrace with view of plaza de armas. The strange thing happened at the breakfast time. The waitress (also she cooks) served fried egg and told us "Usually the breakfast use only 1 egg, but I used 2 eggs. So you have to pay me 1sol each." It was big surprise because we never ask for it…We don't mind pay that amount, but anyway we complained "We don't ask for it." Then she changed her mind and said "Forget it, you don't need to pay anything. But keep it secret for the reception." It was just strange situation. She might want tips?
- CesarP370 (8/5): Good location, right at the main plaza - Arequipa is a beautiful city, full of history and tradition. The main attraction is the city's main plaza. Hotel Maison Plaza is located in front of it.
The hotel has a variety of rooms, so I will recommend to be especific and explain your expectations. If you are arriving late to Arequipa and you want to have a late start, then go for the rooms to the inside. You will not get a window, but you will be away from the noisy streets. If you want to have some view, then request one with that condition. There is fantastic room (Hotel Suite) located at the top of the building with a view to the plaza. If it is available, go for it !!! Is one of those good-nice-cheap deals.
Internet conection was fast and stable. No issues making skype calls from your computer. Your smart phone will work great with the WIFI. There is plenty of hot water in the bathroom and rooms are generally big.
Breakfast is small (basic), but you can sit outside, in the "Portal" and enjoy the view. I recommend to improve the food offered at breakfast and they listen and wrote a note to consider it for the future. Room rates start at 110 soles / 40 dollars (cash), which is cheap compare to other hotels around the area.
If you are looking for something with more service, newer decoration and more details, then go accross the street and pay 3 times more for a smallest, basic room.
- 182christ (4/5): very disappointed - We are retired world travellers. The hotel was fine, the rooms were great and the position was amazing. We understood from reading the last reviews that we could sit out on the balcony and people watch with a glass of wine. This is NOT CORRECT. The doors leading out to the balcony were locked. To get out we had to call reception and they came and unlocked the door. Then they locked the doors again so we were locked out. There were no chairs to sit on so we pushed the button to get back in however no one answered therefore we were stuck out there. Eventually we went through the next door restaurant and back up to out reception. We asked for chairs and a table and were given them begrudgingly and then they locked the door again. We decided this was not acceptable. We stayed one night and then found a wonderful hotel with an outside deck and views to the mountain and one block from the Plaza.
- Ish_Kabibble (8/5): Great location - We are retired world travelers on a budget. We rate budget hotels. We expect budget hotels to have some flaws in exchange for low prices.
Maison Plaza is really a nice hostel right on the main plaza of Arequipa. Rooms were clean. plenty of hot water. Daily maid service. Toilets flushed. Internet connection was good. Breakfast was a bit spartan though. Staff was friendly and helpful. There is a hotel second floor balcony overlooking the plaza that is great to sit and have a glass of wine and watch people. The plaza itself is one of the nicest we've seen in Peru. There are plenty of second floor balcony restaurants steps from the hostel.
The only problem was the noise. We had an interior room and the noise from the reception area drifted up to our room. After 8pm to 7am though the room was very quiet.
All in all, we would recommend this hostel because of all the pluses we mentioned. The location is really excellent and the price was right. We stayed 5 nights.
- Blade29 (8/5): the best location! - the rooms are good and spacious, also the bathroom. it's very clean. there's tv in the room and free wi-fi. our room was on the street side and a bit noisy. what made this place very good value for money was the location, right on the plaza, you can sit outside upstairs with a view on the plaza, also the simple breakfast is served there, what makes it a perfect beginning of the day. staff is friendly but doesn't speak English.
