Guest Reviews
- Larry (6/5): - Understood it was next to a major highway and above a bar/restaurant with loud music. The bar does close at 10PM so acceptable. Chosen for lower cost in the area at that time of year. It was a warm day for AK but no A/C.
- Robert (4/5): - I didn't realize our room would be over a bar. Music was muted but well into the night and started early in the day. The room was clean and staff helpful, but limited TV and no coffee or tea service. Registration was at the bar. We checked out after one night.
- Samantha (8/5): - A room with a table and chair, bed, bathroom with towels and small toiletries. However, no fridge, no coffee maker, and no ice. So, only book if you will be gone all day. Not a place to relax just to sleep.
- Gary (10/5): - Read the other reviews on this property and set your expectations. It’s a budget friendly option. Looking for a hot shower, flushing toilet and a bed - you’ve got it. Rooms are upstairs from the bar so you’ll hear the music until 10 PM. Not an issue if you’re in the bar which has a very cool vibe to include the play lists. There’s a separate restaurant section for non-drinkers.Good surveillance - door locks are dated but functional. The staff is warm, friendly and certainly add to the magic.
- James (6/5): - Windbreak Hotel was OK and fine for the price.
Things to note:
Rooms are on 2nd floor; no elevator
Rooms are clean & comfortable, but spartan. No frig, no microwave, desk chair & desk & bed. No deadbolt or safety latch.
!!!Bring earplugs; music is ON in the bar below the rooms even when there are no bar patrons.
No daily room svc (ok w. me).
Hallway carpeting is dirty.
Scent emiting things in hallway are obnoxious.
No obvious way to check out early (bfr bar opens).
- Thomas (10/5): - All was good, A/C UNIT a little noisy.
- Sargeant (6/5): - Solid 3*
- Geoffrey (2/5): - The heater didn't work in the room, The only way I was able to heat it up was using the shower in the room to steam the room.
The smallest TV I've seen in a hotel room, which would have been fine except the Wi-Fi was so spotty. You couldn't even watch anything on the TV, Even though they advertise cable it was just internet TV. Which again would be fine if the Wi-Fi worked. When I talked to the people at the front desk they just said yeah the Wi-Fi is bad. So why advertise and offer that if you know it doesn't work?
Fire alarm went off multiple times while I was there
- Sai (8/5): - If you want to stay for a night, I would recommend this place.
- Russell (10/5): - Excellent
- Anthony (2/5): - Didn
- Jeff (10/5): - Quiet & clean
- Karrie (10/5): - We wish they would have had a coffee maker in the room, the restaurant below is excellent. The staff was very nice
- Timothy (6/5): - Having a restaurant was convenient
- John (4/5): Outdated - Room was outdated. Door had been kicked open and never repaired. At 6 am bar turned drumming music on that resonated throughout the whole 2 nd story never stopping. Sounded like same drumming tune that never stopped. Ended up with a terrible headache. No elevator. Old 1970 ac unit in corner of room wigg try h a tin pan under it
- Lisa (2/5): - The room was a double bed, not a queen that I reserved. No disability options for getting upstairs, and the tv was very small! The room was freezing and limited blankets/pillows. The staff were great!
- Joseph (8/5): - They need a microwave and coffee pot in the rooms
- Joseph (10/5): - Above and beyond staff
- Joseph (8/5): - Friendly staff
- Joseph (8/5): - Room service
- Joseph (8/5): - Outstanding customer service
- William (2/5): - They charged me more than the rate I received through Expedia. The internet wasn't working. No cable tv, I had to get batteries for the TV remote only to find no channels worked. The heater was not plugged in. Somebody must have dumped a bottle of fabreeze to call ver the smell of the mold, it wasn't working. The mattress came from the 1970's.
- Glenn (8/5): - Resonably priced for Wasilla.
- Brad (8/5): - Plain
- Mary (4/5): - The room was clean. Great shower. The restaurant was excellent. Staff was friendly.
However, the rooms were located over a lounge that played LOUD music until 10:30 at night and it started up again at 6:30 in the morning. Therefore, it was very difficult to rest/sleep.
- Heather (8/5): - Property was fine. When asked to book a specific room for our stay it wasnt given to us. Pretty disappointed. Then had to leave a day early for reasons out of our control and was told no refund. Had we known it may have changed our minds about staying there this time. Over all it was a good stay.
- Thomas (10/5): - Parking was alittle tight with a full size truck
- thomas (10/5): - Good place. Bar and restaurant down stairs
- Theresa (8/5): - Price. Thought it would be noisy but it was very quiet. Very nice staff. Great for a tight budget
- Robert (6/5): -
Over all not a bad place for the price
Friendly staff on the bar & hotel side
Restaurant is a bit over priced, but food was ok
Waitress was abrupt & rude, worse after being informed she got the order wrong
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Could’ve done without the thumping bar music at 7am!!!
- Kimberley (8/5): Windbreak was a good choice - Very friendly staff when I checked in. Room was clean and nice for my work stay. Lounge and restaurant attached and the food was great.
- Andrew (10/5): - Very clean room. Friendly staff and very accessible
- Andrew (10/5): - Quiet and convenient
- Jacquelynn (2/5): - Rooms were dirty, bare, outdated.
- Jeremy (10/5): - Great staff
- Noel (10/5): - Thanks! Always fun to stay there!
- Byron (10/5): - Kl
- Isabel (10/5): - Restaurant was delicious and the steak was definitely juicy! The bartender and servers that helped us were very nice and respectful. They shared with us about Alaska. We were so touched we had to buy a sweater from there as a memory of the great time we had there. I’d def return here in the future!
💚💛❤️
- DELBERT (4/5): - We were unable to use this facility due to the only way to the room was up steep stairway. My wife is unable to navigate stairs and there was no elevator.
- Dustin (4/5): - Too many druggies going in and out at all times of the night. Scary girl was standing in hallway staring out window all night/morning
- Walker (2/5): - Room was wrong homeless lady searching for goods after hours rooms need maintenance desperately
- Michael (8/5): - Choices in dining.
- Charles (4/5): - It was ok, very noisy music till late, tv didn’t work, not even a phone in the room.
- Jason (10/5): Old School - Great stay, older rooms but clean
- Jacob (4/5): - Overall its a room with a bathroom. Tv would not stay working. Kept saying no internet connection for it to pick up signal from. The wifi they offer is almost non existent. You can connect to google or email after midnight when the bar has closed and is not using all the bandwidth. Metal bits sticking out from the mattress and box frame from around sides and bottom.
- Shanna (6/5): - Wonderful and friendly staff. Couldn't get the tv to work. No microwave, no refrigerator
- Verified traveler (2/5): - This was a terrible disappointment, The Windbreak Cafe, has been around awhile. As an Alaskan I have been a loyal customer. However I recently rented a room and was shocked by the condition of rooms and hotel. $130 a night for a slum, No amenities spotty internet and loose plumbing fixtures. Not to mention the fire hazard in the bathroom. Dirty , no ice or anything else after 9:30. And during the evening load music from the bar below. Very dirty and run down, total lack of maintenance and a snooty manager who totally blew me off, saying it was the cheapest room in town. Although that is untrue. Service is unacceptable, I would not stay there again, and now I will change restaurants. Because of the manager. Who obviously doesn't care about the future of this business.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The place seemed old, but nothing too bad about the property. I could slightly hear music from the bar in my room. There could've been a mini fridge added to help keep my drinks cold, but they didnt have one. Besides that, it was a good hotel for cheap.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Its a ok place for one night
Service and personell was nice
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The Windbreak Hotel, Cafe, and Lounge is in good condition and well maintained. The staff is kind, helpful, and efficient. The food and service at the Trout House Cafe is 2nd to none in the Wasilla area, the lounge is nostalgic and family friendly. What a great place to stay at in your Alaska adventures! Nick, Colorado
- Lonny (4/5): The pictures are deceiving. - This place is a dump! The first clue is when checking in you do it at the bar where people are eating or drinking and just jump in on the conversation your having with the bar maid/hotel clerk. Very unprofessional. As for the room it’s over a very noise bar! You have to go through a locked smoky stairwell then a locked hallway to get to your room that was not clean; dirty carpet, bedsheets looked like someone had already slept on, No screen on the open window, paint flaking on windowsill, bathroom not cleaned, in room heater is sitting on a drip pan and vented through outside wall. You want a cheap room then book this place. Will never recommend this hotel to anyone!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great no frills hotel, we loved it. - This a very clean hotel, reminded us of the early 70's. No frills if you want a placd to just sleep and shower this is it. The only thing we would have liked was a clock so when you wake up you could see what time it was. The staff was incredibly nice. We would definetly stay again.
- Sharon (8/5): Quick trip to see family. - The Windbreak is clean, has a comfortable bed, a television, & is economical. That is all I need on a quick trip to visit family.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - When attepting to check in I was told they had no record of my reservation. I showed my Expedia reservation and they denied receiving it and had no rooms available
- Verified traveler (6/5): - My room was filthy. The floor was dirty and the walls disgusting.
- Marta (8/5): Splendid - Its small but decent. Bed was not too shabby friendly staff awesome food.
- Kristina (6/5): - My expectations may have been 2 high given what they charged a night. No microwave, 1 channel, and no phone in room.
- Sherri (10/5): - Basic room, small but comfortable. On site restaurant and bar!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The Windbreak is an economical reasonably clean place for a short stay.
- mark (8/5): - good food (you pay for it) just a room but in the peak season it is a good room for under $100
- Hilde (4/5): - Dirty and rundown. It is above a weird bar that is super noisy in the evening. Steep stairs going to the upper level. Not ada friendly. The room was dirty. Fixtures missing lightbulbs. Outlets missing covers. The maid didn’t clean the room. I realize it’s a cheap hotel and you get what you pay for. But yuck. It’s a weird gross place even by Alaska standards. It seems like the hotel is an afterthought and very poorly managed. You can’t check in after 9pm.
- Carol (10/5): Windbreak - Motel is conveniently located just off the Parks Highway. Has a nice restaurant and bar right on the property and is quite secure, with a key to the main door plus room key. Because of the bar below is was a LITTLE noisy at night but I had no problem sleeping. Had a GREAT meal with generous portions and enjoyed the huge Margarita! All in all a good stopping place when driving from the Kenai to Fairbanks or beyond.
- Michael (8/5): - Great bar and grill clean rooms not so comfortable beds great service
- Eugene (6/5): Saved my life - Rooms were sold out in Anchorage so this place saved me from sleeping in the car.
Check in was confusing, you should include instructions about checking in with the bartender. Room was clean, mattress old but I slept good. Did not clean the room but I was ok with that.
- Dr.Roz (2/5): - Expedia told me verbatim that this hotel had a hotel check in desk, THEY do not. You have to go into the bar, wait for her with bar patrons then helps hotel guest. These people probably know more about gin and rum than they know about hotel service. A/C in one of my rooms was nonexistent. 80 degrees out side it was 86 in my room . I went back to bar staff and told them, they said they’d fix it. We were gone for nearly 4 hours, and after a 6 hour road trip we were tired, but I still had no a/c. The bartender said they could not fix it but put a box fan in the 86 degree room. They had a sign on our doors not to open the windows, so I asked her where will I get the cold air from to cool the room, she just kept apologizing and offered me a refund to go elsewhere; at 9pm I’m supposed to be able to find another hotel for my brother and I? I told them they are responsible for making sure their equipment is in proper working condition before booking and taking our money. I opened the window any way and put the box fan into it. The hotel is non smoking but someone was smoking dope and they were not even moved by that so I asked them why aren’t you doing something but they did not know what to do so I told them to get some air freshener. The staffer brought it to me without even spraying the hall or looking for the culprit. Hotel business is not for immature juveniles who don’t have a clue what they are doing or supposed to provide for guest. Expedia needs to be more responsible!
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Is better if I don’t say anything about my experience in this hotel!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Everthing was great.
The room was ready when i got to the hotel.
The check in process was very quick.
Very nice room.
Very nice staff.
I would recommend the Wjndbreak to anyone.
5 star plus in my opinion.
Even had a wonderful breakfast the next morning.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - There was no clerk for me to checking, therefore I never stayed here... they took my money and did not allow me to check in
- SimplyOrange (4/5): - They were able to accommodate well. The rooms were too hot.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - That it was in the middle of most everything. If it was summer I could have walked everywhere.
- Linda (6/5): Done and over. - Seems I anweredthesesquestions already.
- Dottie (6/5): - Hotel was hard to find. Very poor signage. Bed was clean and but not comfortable. The room was hot. Windows had screen but no fan which would have helped cool the room and block out soon of the highway noise. The carpet was very dirty - needs to be replaced. The on-site restaurant was nice.
- Keith (6/5): - Jasmine and Aleska were just as nice as could be. Room had small beds and room got too hot so we checked out a few days early but they made it right. Good location and close to shopping and restaurants.
- Mike (2/5): - Would have rather slept in my truck. Not sure what was worse, the filth, crappy squeaky mattress, or the toenail clippings on the floor. No coffee pot. Checking was in the restaurant at the bar. Never again!!
- Kjdare (10/5): - Attended a 4x4 meet and greet in Wasilla with my parents. Both of us got a room. Quiet hotel. Great price. They were aware of all issues and had plans to fix it; doors not unlocking with key.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Ok Hotel, good restaurant next door.
- The room was clean except the bath tub/shower was not. Other than that all good.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Convenient to town - Tv bad gci poor cable company, room was small but it was clean
