Guest Reviews
- Joseph (10/5): - The staff make this place shine, even more than the ambiance (which is clearly a rightful draw). They make a heartfelt effort to make this a good experience for everyone.
- Vacation02343572232 (2/5): Nightmare anniversary zero stars - We stayed at the Baker House hoping to celebrate our anniversary. The house must have been a hundred degrees so they brought a small dirty fan up into our room. The furniture is all old with springs popping through worn filthy cushions. We had stayed in the past and they had included breakfast and there was staff on site then. This time we were left completely alone in the house and when we called the number on the check in card for after hours it went straight to voicemail. Also apparently no more breakfast is included just a bowl of half rotten fruit sitting on the community table. The $48 brunch the next morning also offered moldy fruit. We sat on the front porch where the tables aren’t even dining tables but end tables so we smacked our knees against the legs and couldn’t even push in our chairs to eat properly. An older man who I believe was the owner was yelling and swearing at his employees at the front desk when we were in the bar area. I don’t think he knew we could hear but the entire experience was so disheartening , uncomfortable and just disgusting we will never ever go back. Such a shame such a beautiful house is being run into the ground by a man who obviously cares nothing for the quality of the food or maintaining the house or even having enough professionalism not to swear and scream at his employees in front of the guests. Zero stars. So disappointing. Worst anniversary ever thanks to the bad choice we made going there. We definitely won’t be back and I’ll be posting this review on every site possible to warn others not to let Baker House destroy anyone else’s special occasion.
- Stephanie (8/5): Good location & antique ambiance - Location was great, but the AC control was not working and it was warm in our room upon arrival. And the windows don’t open. I found the bed and pillows uncomfortable, but my husband said they were ok. Decor and ambiance was nice and what we expected and a fun change from modern hotels.
- Journey39967764251 (2/5): Bad service - Very bad service. We did a reservation on line and the hostess refused to accept us. Very disappointed. I think this people is very racism. The owner should to check the process. I live in Chicago but when I come back here I prefer to eat in another place
- F9519IEjeremyc (2/5): Disappointing special occasion. - We had been looking forward Baker House’s brunch for our 30th anniversary and noted this when making reservation. Basic service was lacking. Had to request plates for croissants. Requested condiment delivered when meal over. Offered deserts were still frozen and lackluster. Food was so-so. Did not acknowledge the occasion even though reservation form specifically asks if it is a special occasion. Management was dismissive when explaining they lost their chef and general manager the night before. Their basic efforts fell significantly short of meeting the mark. Do not recommend.
- FRANK (8/5): - Nice experience
- Evelyn (8/5): - The property itself was beautiful and so was the room. It was unique, and it felt like I was stepping into a luxury 1800s suite.
However, since this is such an old building, you can hear everything from the upstairs. On both mornings that we stayed, we heard every single footstep from the person living upstairs starting at 7am to 8am, until they left. There was no noise insulation, and it was really unfortunate to be woken up every morning because of the very, very thin walls and ceilings.
Also, make sure to turn the dial on the wall *off* otherwise music will start playing starting at 8am. We weren’t aware of this and therefore were awoken again at 8am by music.
Also your stay may irritate your allergies if you are allergic to dust.
But aside from that, the complimentary breakfast was very delicious, the included Sunday brunch was delicious, and the rooms and the house itself was gorgeous.
Everyone was also very nice.
- Terrence (10/5): - Old time charm
- Joseph (10/5): - Great historic mansion turned into a hotel! Amazing place to stay on Lake Geneva, with a courtyard for coffee and a speakeasy in the basement.
- Marshall (8/5): A great bed and board. - If you want to read an Agatha Christie in style this is the bed and board for you. See a picture of the place. Good location also. We’ll be back
- Michael (10/5): - Restored home with lots of period decor and furnishings. Beautiful views of Lake Geneva. Unique Speakeasy in basement.
Very special place updated without destroying period styles.
- Maribel (10/5): - This hotel was beautiful with a wonderful view of the lake. The unexpected private parking spot and dining table were a plus. Also a wonderful continental breakfast with a view.
- mackt1963 (10/5): The best way to stay in an 1800’s Mansion - The themed rooms and team taking care of the property are fantastic. Fireplaces in each room made for a memorable stay. Very cozy, with comfortable beds and lounge for breakfast. The warm croissants in the morning watching the lake were memorable.
- Nicole (10/5): - It was the perfect overnight getaway to celebrate a birthday. The staff were welcoming, kind, and attentive. Love the small touches that you find throughout the property. We enjoyed our dinner and the lovely quiet breakfast in the morning. It is ideal for anyone who loves history and being swept up in it.
- colleen (10/5): - Beautiful Victorian style building looking over Lake Geneva. Bed was so comfy, we usually do t sleep well the first night at any hotel but this was exceptional. Gorgeous tiled bathroom keeping with the decor but the shower fixtures are sleek and modern including horizontal spray and rain shower head. Luxurious thick robes are ready to warm up in! We were in the Champagne room and i could've stayed all week. Everyone we dealt with was so nice and welcoming. Bartender fun and mixed a great Gin martini! Will be back for sure!
- 908sem (10/5): So Cool So real out of this world lime a Themed restaurant you'd expect at a major theme park. AMAZING SERVICE. - The Best meal, the best staff and management, great culinary cooks who care about what they are serving, super awesome eclectic ambiance. You have to at very least enjoy a drink at happy hour and see for yourself. The steak is Amazing and the staff is out of this world full of smiles and kindness. It like going to dinner at a family member who has a fancy home. A plus.
- Melissa (10/5): - Staff was excellent - food fantastic. Will definitely be back.
- D1725VLlarryc (10/5): Great experience - Selected the hotel based on location and historical information, for an over night stay and dinner for my birthday....it exceeded expectations, property and staff were like something from the guiled age.just step back in time and imagine being pampered.
Would suggest for anyone looking for something different and enjoyable.
- Daniel (10/5): - Wonderful hotel. Because we stayed on Monday we were able to check in early. Everyone was friendly and the house is filled with history. Right across from Geneva lake and close to everything Highly recommend.
- 29sherric (2/5): Sunday Buffet - I had made reservations for a Birthday on Sunday 6/25 and we were looking forward to the Sunday Brunch Menu, which I have had before and the food was delicious and it was listed on the Website. However, this was THE worst visit EVER! We were not even offered the Brunch Menu and all that was offered was a Buffet, which was equivalent to a poor continental breakfast at a 2 Star Hotel. The Eggs weren't eggs and obviously Egg Beaters, there was oatmeal that looked nasty with no bowls even, the tortellini pasta looked leftover from who knows when. The sausages were brown and serve, there was some gray sausage gravy with some hard stale biscuits, and bagels without any cream cheese. No beverages other than coffee were available either. For the price of $48??? Not to mention a Childs plate was $35. This was absolutely outrageous and was not worth $10. In addition, there was no acknowledgment to having a Birthday guest in our party. You just lost 8 customer's and 5 of them had never been there before. You need to rethink that whole buffet thing because I'm sure others were not impressed at all.
- Migizi (10/5): Historic, wonderful place - the best place to stay in LG - Stayed here 2 nights in July as a couple. Had eaten here before but had never stayed before then. It is a truly wonderful place to stay and I highly recommend it. Some details...
--Each room has its own character - nothing cookie cutter about them. We stayed in the Bordeaux. The decor is opulent but also eccentric, and you can keep finding new little things of interest every moment you are in it.
--Bed was comfortable
--Bathroom is a little smallish but wonderfully decorated and everything worked fine
--Common areas are just as interesting as the rooms, decorated in lots of period things. There is a nice little sitting area reserved only for room guests (there are only a few rooms in the place), with views of the lake.
--There is a restaurant and bar on the premises that are quite good too, but see those reviews separately for more detail.
--The building is old, so things are creeky and not everything is perfectly fitted anymore and the floors and doors creak and groan. Just be aware of that.
--It is also a pretty expensive place - another thing to know going in. But it is expensive for good reasons.
--Customer service was good, though they (like seemingly every other business) were clearly short-staffed so there were sometimes some waits to find someone.
If you want simple and inexpensive, this is not the place. But if you want a unique, stand-out experience and are willing to shell out for it, then this is THE place to stay in Lake Geneva or anywhere in the vicinity, hands-down.
- Jonnelle (10/5): - It was amazing
The room was wonderful with quite a comfortable bed. The shower was AMAZING: large walk in with water sprayers that flet like they were surrounding you
Excellent food
- Eliza (4/5): Disappointing - The hotel was very noisy and in poor condition. The music downstairs was audible throughout the day, and in the evening and early morning there were very loud footsteps above (it sounded like a child running around). The hotel was dingy and in need of a complete renovation and deep clean. For example, shower grout was missing or moldy in places. I would not recommend this hotel at a budget price, much less at the price we paid which was comparable to a Four Seasons room in my home city.
- 44JE44 (8/5): Sumptious & a bit extraordinary - Service pre and during was over the top. The room was a victorian design lover's delight with sconces, mirrors, gilded drapes and flowing bed canopy with turret sitting room.
They opened the restaurant for us! We had to of course plan in advance to have them open up. The full menu was available as well as bar. We had the entire place to ourselves.
Accommodations, service, ambiance were all superb and full met expectations. True. It is pricey. However it was a unique experience for us
- Jouko (10/5): - One of the most unique and memorable places we've ever stayed in. As the sign at the front door says, you step back in time when entering, but all modern conveniences are still there. Each room is unique, but I can say the Champagne room where we stayed was just as shown in the pictures, with probably the most amazing shower I've used. The included breakfast delivered to the room fit the ambiance perfectly and the host was delightful. My wife definitely approved of my choice for our anniversary getaway.
- Lonna (8/5): - Our first visit To the Baker House and my husband Gene and I stayed for 3 nights. Beautiful 1885 furnishings. Professional and accommodating staff. Bent over backwards to please all our needs. Our room was very cozy but lacked heat in our room. Having a fireplace in our room was very romantic but did not give off much heat. Needed assistance from Courtney every evening to turn up the room temperature otherwise we totally enjoyed our stay. Food was very good.
- brooke (10/5): - N/a
- timnancem (10/5): Don't miss out - The best time in our lives. Husband and I went for a quite intermit dinner. Amanda our hostess made our experience perfect. We were celebrating my new life . The food was more that wonderful. The chef is truly one in a million. The crap cakes were delicious. The Tuna the very best. My husband's rib eye , well the only word is WOW. Please don't miss going to this place.
- Aruna (10/5): - Wonderful
- Jennifer (10/5): - Well
- rhonda1143 (2/5): Not as advertised - When we checked into the hotel, we were told all the staff were going to a party and we would be on our own. We should have asked for a refund right then. The house was a mess with glasses, liquor bottles, beach towels, bags, etc sitting everywhere on the main floor. NOT what I would expect to see when walking into a historical home. According to their website, "when you check in to the Baker House you can look forward to an exceptional experience without equal in Lake Geneva or perhaps, anywhere in the world." Definitely not what we encountered. It ruined the whole experience right from the front door. The restaurant and bar all closed for the night so the staff could have fun, while we couldn't even get a glass of wine to enjoy, even though the card given us upon check-in states we can call and the House Butler will bring us beverages from 8am-11pm. They were all at their own party! The staff had their party in the English garden so we couldn't even use that.
When we checked in, we were asked what time we wanted breakfast. We said 7:30 and we're told she would let the cook know and to come down in the morning when we were ready. We went down at 7:30 and everything was dark and no one around. Not even coffee available anywhere, nor in the rooms. We came back down at 8:15, even called out for anyone and no answer. We finally called the night manager number given to us and were told they could make us coffee and get us a croissant but it would be 15 minutes. Definitely not the “gourmet continental breakfast for two, including seasonal berries, fresh baked pastries and hot coffee or tea” described on the website when we booked the reservation. We went out for breakfast at that point.
The manager was suppose to call us to discuss and a now it’s a week later and we're still waiting...
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Absolutely amazing atmosphere. Not all of the amenities you’d get in a more modern building but you know that going in. Reminds me of a nice European hostel.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The place itself was charming and the staff was really nice
- Thomas (10/5): - Beautiful archetecture, had some problems with the door lock which staff hard to correct
- Michael (10/5): Excellent service and Location - Staff was very friendly and provided excellent service. Highly recommend. Romantic environment.
- 250kelseys (10/5): Amazing space for rehearsal dinner - We held our rehearsal dinner at The Baker House in November 2020. With the pandemic and last minute changes to our wedding, The Baker House was able to accommodate our group with safety precautions in place, and provided a custom meal. Courtney, the Event Planner, was AMAZING to work with. She was quick to respond to email, agreed to a tour of the space on short notice, and helped us to develop a custom meal to fit our budget. We had a group of 22 friends/family, and were able to use 2 private rooms in order to spread out. The staff serving us wore masks, were efficient, and everything from apps to desserts was served individually with COVID precautions in mind. Our guests couldn't say enough about the excellent food and overall experience. Everything was delicious, and the unique atmosphere of the restaurant was an added bonus!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - We enjoyed champagne upon arrival. Dinner was delicious.
- phillipa117 (2/5): Be prepare to pay even if you cannot stay through your booking - Read the recent reviews to the right for other one star reviews from people who stayed before you read our experience, and before you consider any response the property decides to make.
We booked a stay for Jun 21-23, 2020 in the Champagne Suite. For various reasons, including the highly allergic reaction one of our party had in the room, we checked out on June 22.
The room itself has a large amount of fabric in the bedroom, and the bathroom. That fabric actually covers the air conditioner vent, which further limits the flow of cool and perhaps filtered air to the room.
Having checked out, at which point we both left our key at the front desk and followed up with an email immediately, we incorrectly assumed hotel courtesy would dictate that the property charged for the night we did stay.
Rather the property charged for all three nights, not withstanding the health reasons for us leaving and going to another city and paying for a different hotel for two nights.
My diagnosed allergies include indoor dust, mites, mold and dander. I do not know which of these were triggered. But I do know at least one was.
If you 1) suffer with any dust, mites, mold, dander or other indoor allergies consider our experience in making a booking, or 2) expect courtesy if you have a reason to end your stay early be aware the property has a "charge for the stay whether used or not" hard policy
- GreenBayfan (2/5): Nothing was as advertised. Never going back - I wish I had read the review by BAKreiter prior to booking The Baker Hotel. We agree with everything in that 1 star review. We were 10 minutes before official check in time and a young teenager told us we could not check in . When we returned a woman took us to our room and explained that we could "call" for the included breakfast at any time. The card she gave us had a phone # to call. Unfortunately, no one was ever available via that # and voicemail hadn't been set up. No phones in rooms so my husband had to go search for her in the morning. So much for breakfast in bed. We were told we were the only people in the hotel that night so she wasn't busy. When we asked about the butler service described on their website, she said " Oh you would need to call him to have him come to your room." "But we don't have a butler at this point." Our experience in the bar was similar to the above mentioned review. She didn't know how to make a gimlet and had to look it up. We asked for a cheese plate and were told they don't serve in the bar. she said she would ask the kitchen but she couldn't seem to get this done. Do not expect any room service ever. Bar closes at will and hours posted are not adhered to. The outdoor garden area was a disaster. Cushions left out in the rain made the area unable to be used. Cushions were all over the ground for 3 days. There was a tornado and damaging winds on 2nd night of our stay so I guess leaving everything outside and on the ground saved them from moving anything in and back out. The fire alarm went off at 2:15 am and when the fire department arrived they asked for manager/owner. Neither were onsite. The manager arrived a half hour later with a sad story that her son had been taken to the hospital and she was there with him. Who knows. Anyway, the guests were completely alone. The whole experience was terrible and $500. per night was a splurge for us since it was our 40th wedding anniversary. Also, NOTE: THERE IS NO POOL! She blamed Trip advisor for telling people there was a pool. I did share our disappointment with Courtney (manager/owner?) but she is so stretched and worn out from lack of staff she really didn't have a response except to say she wished we would have let her know and she could've moved us to The Maxwell House because she knows them. Really??? I seriously doubt it. On a bright note, our room, The Versailles was clean and newly done. Lovely view. The salon outside of our room was also clean with reasonably newish period furniture. The complimentary breakfast was continental but fresh and satisfactory. Unfortunately, no one was around to ask for suggestions about activities or dining. Luckily, we had been to Lake Geneva before so we were familiar with the area. Due to Covid-19 we were forced to stay close to home for our anniversary and we had such high hopes due to the Baker Hotel reviews and thought price was an indicator of luxury and service. Both were a disappointment. Stay elsewhere. So many other choices. The Baker Hotel needs to close for awhile to rebrand, get some new staff, and re write their description. I DO NOT RECOMMEND!!
- BAVANRUDEN (2/5): Such a bad experience, it was comical... - Please, please, please if you take any review seriously on TripAdvisor, let it be this one. I don't want any other traveler to go through what we did.
We were highly misled on the experience we would have during our stay. This is directly from the website: "Guests are provided with room service, private bar and lake view dining room as well as private Butler and exclusive access to the English gardens during the day and reserved garden pavilion for al fresco dining & cocktails in the evening." Well, they had a bar, but it definitely wasn't private, the butler was non-existent, the garden pavilion was open to the public and nothing was reserved for you.
When we arrived at check-in we were greeted by a teenager behind the counter. Seeing this was not a very good first impression for us. She called for our butler and she led us upstairs...we carried our own luggage, I guess we were dumb to think maybe our "butler" would do that for us (other reviews I had read stated that this was done for them, and they were given champagne upon arrival). We called our 'butler' twice during our first night and left messages both times. There was loud pounding above us as we were trying to go to sleep and we were hoping to get some help with the noise issue. SHE NEVER RESPONDED. When she initially gave us a tour of the room, she told us “not to feel bad if we had to call at 2am for anything." Well, that's your job, so I am not sure why I would feel bad if I had an issue I needed to call about. But it didn't matter anyways, because even though she said that, she never responded to us, not even to apologize for not getting back to us. We were told we got complimentary breakfast included, but if we wanted eggs or meat we would have to pay extra!?! At $500 a night, one would assume that is something they would be so kind to include, but instead they wanted more money for a basic breakfast. I mean, the Holiday Inn Express includes eggs and meat with their complimentary breakfast, for goodness sake. In all honesty, I am not sure what exactly we spent $1000 on for two nights. We wanted to splurge on a weekend getaway since all of our other travel plans were canceled this year. I researched Lake Geneva, and saw this place as something unique and out of the ordinary. Yes, although the room was beautiful (we stayed in the Champagne Room), and the hotel itself was very distinctive, we were expecting much more than that.
The staff was completely inept. Not one person there was a professional. The way this establishment is run is a complete joke. They say you are 'going back in time' once you enter this hotel, yet the first night we arrived they were playing dub-step music as their 'live music' and had a karaoke band the next night. We checked the ‘live music’ out Saturday night, and saw our ‘butler’ talking to someone. While this was going on a group of very intoxicated customers were at a table next to us. One of the girls in this group took a running start and began beating the crap out of this guy right in the middle of the parking lot next to the front garden. It was so bad, I was questioning whether we should call the cops or not. The butler was not fazed by this scene whatsoever.
The 'bartenders,' if you could call them that, were eating food while right in front of us (stuffing their faces full of fries), and not one person knew how to make a drink. They had to look at note cards to make a Manhattan and didn't know that a Cabernet was a red wine. For a hotel that has been here since 1885, I would expect them to know how to make a decent drink and not premise handing our drink over by saying "if it's icky, I'll make another one." We had high hopes for this place, but it is clear there has been a turnover in staff. The people they have working right now have absolutely no clue what is going on. The feeling we got from this place, was that someone inherited the hotel and decided it would be a good idea to just hire all their friends to join the staff, even if they weren’t qualified for the job. From looking at past reviews, it is clear that there has recently been a turnover in staff, and maybe it has something to do with COVID, but I cannot be sure. No one we came into contact with appeared to be qualified in any way shape or form to be on staff at a hotel.
Beyond disappointed with our stay, and will most definitely not be recommending this hotel to anyone. The only reason I believe this place will continue to limp along, is because of the location it has. It will certainly not be because of the experience it provides its guests. The website claims that “When you check in to the Baker House you can look forward to an exceptional experience without equal in Lake Geneva or perhaps, anywhere in the world.” After our experience, this statement is just laughable.
- emmaretto (8/5): Lovely dinner - Historical restaurant and hotel you should come see once. We had a table in their inside patio with a wonderful view of the lake. They do not have outdoor seating during the week which was disappointing but it worked out well since it was pretty hot the evening we went.
All the food was great-crab cakes, bbq salmon, lobster tail and truffle fries. Drinks were great too- cucumber martini perfect!
After dinner go visit their other themed rooms if you get a chance and take a spin on the vintage roulette table!
- pattyf713 (8/5): Great View and Enviornment - The view is awesome. Over look the lake at sunset with a cocktail on hand! The house is fun to explore. Although we did not stay overnight, I would love to try out the rooms given the location and fun environment.
- kljlkj (2/5): Don't go to their New Years Eve parties ! - We went to their New Years Eve dinner and party. This was an AWFUL experience. They overbooked and stuck us in a hallway outside of where entertainment, and other people were crammed in, and we felt like outcasts. We have gone in previous years, (previous owners) and it was fun), this year, NEVER AGAIN. The food was tolerable but for spending over $300 a couple, I felt completely ripped off. We left around 10PM, as there was no where to sit, and no entertainment. IF YOU WANT ENTERTAINMENT and to have a good time, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE !
- 191hayleyp (10/5): Beautiful, Central & Historic Lake Geneva Experience - This place is so unique and beautiful. My husband and I had the fabulous opportunity to tour the rooms, which are all updated and ornate. There isn’t a better view of the lake in downtown Lake Geneva, where the hotel is centrally located. The Sunday brunch was delicious, and the staff are wonderful. The bartender made a point to make a personal connection with each person in our group, including 2-year-old Avery. The hotel manager was gracious when we ordered pizza and soon realized that we didn’t have enough cash and it was pouring rain. He didn’t want us to walk all the way to the ATM, so he loaned us the money until the morning. All around an outstanding experience!
- kusch16 (10/5): Wonderful experience at the Baker House! - We had an amazing time at the Baker House! We stayed two nights in the Champagne room. We loved the room(especially the fireplace)and the bed was so incredibly comfortable!! Timothy, our butler, was wonderful and we felt so spoiled! The breakfast was lovely and we really enjoyed sitting in the front room looking over the lake while we drank coffee and ate croissants and yogurt parfaits. The little touches(champagne and a tour when we arrived plus cookies and water for the road when we left) just added to the experience. The service went above and beyond our entire stay. We will be back!
- Shea (10/5): Amazing - Amazing
- Traveler (8/5): - Well, the entire property is unique. It’s a small restaurant & bar on first floor, 5 guest rooms and a sitting room on 2nd floor, owner lives on 3rd floor. Lakefront historic house built in 1885, very charming staff. The rooms never really get cold, even at night so if you need icebox AC not for you. Otherwise, breakfast is lovely and it feels like you’ve gone back in time. Would stay again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Exceeded expectations. Place is absolitely gorgeous, me
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This is one of the most luxurious and welcoming hotels I've ever stayed in. It was a truly one-of-a-kind experience in a beautiful location.
- james (10/5): - Very good
- Verified traveler (10/5): - OMW - this is an elegant step back in time. The butlers (Jonathan and Brent!) made our stay like we were actually one of the Bakers from the 1800's - coffee served in sterling silver coffee pot on a silver platter. The rooms were impeccably decorated. We must return in the summer when the town is bustling with people. THANK YOU for the amazing adventure turning our clock back!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - mattres was extremely old and needed to be replaced years ago.
room was very small
didn't feel safe with door locks
tub was filthy specially under rub matt.
very cold in room.

- Anthony (10/5): - The staff is incredibly attentive -- the hotel is rich in history and is incredibly opulent -- beautiful and luxurious -- the restaurant has very good food (my wife and I ate there several times over the four days we stayed) -- great location and is extremely close to anything you would want to do in Lake Geneva -- we will certainly be staying there again!

Everyone in this house bends over backwards to make your stay relaxed and memorable. The suites are gorgeous, the food is amazing and you feel pampered throughout your stay. The view on the lake is outstanding and even if the weather isn't great, there will be plenty of things to keep you occupied in the house. Will absolutely be back.
