Guest Reviews
- Barrie (10/5): - Excellent location, plenty of parking space, very helpful staff, good value for money.
- Rhys (4/5): Don’t stay here unless last resort - Poor condition water pressure in shower awful paid £4 for breakfast that wasn’t even available!
- Victoria (4/5): Nice staff - I didn't like the breakfast at all. There was an Indian restaurant without a bar. Plenty of parking.
- Barrie (10/5): - Excellent place, rooms well fitted, quiet but accessible.
- Perry (2/5): - Very very very very poor, stood outside in the rain would be better than the showers, dirt dust and cobwebs in bedrooms, no bar and breakfast consisted of potted pineapple and a cheese tostie that you have to eat in your filthy room.
- Millie (4/5): - I have never known such an unmanned hotel, the reception desk was only open for 3hours per day - i arrived later in evening and only just caught someone on the desk. Although she was very helpful it was very unorganised and she had to call her manager regarding my booking as clear instructions had not been left for her. I did not receive any confirmation from the hotel when i booked and had to make several attempts to contact the hotel prior to my booking along with numerous attempts at calling the hotel but with no response. i find it hard to believe that a hotel can be run this way. The room itself was clean and very basic but served its purpose. My negative would be all based on the running of the bookings and felt that better management was needed.
- John (10/5): Restful - Very comfortable room, spacious and clean.
If you want peace and quiet, this is the place to stay, a little out the way so need a car.
- Jason (8/5): - A out the way hotel quiet, friendly staff.
- Natish (4/5): - The bath tub was dirty, one of the bed head boards had a stain that looked like blood, my stay was only 2 nights so the hotel didn’t have time to resolve this issue, also the reception has limited opening times
- Verified traveler (6/5): Needs a good clean - The place was very weird and quiet. Nice location but no one around. Restaurant empty. No cafe for drinks or coffee. Room was ok but surrounding outdoor corridors and courtyard dirty and full of cigarette butts. Place needs a good clean. Was provided with a fan in the room which was handy as room quite stuffy and hot.
- Robert (2/5): - Nice towels in bathroom but nowhere to put them. Bedroom a bit sparse as was the staff. Lucky to get a staff member in the afternoon to check us in as electronic check in did not work. Opinion on hotel influenced by our saturday Times disappearing (clearly set aside and wanted) but room bins not emptied and room not serviced. Hope houskeeping enjoyed the crossword?
- Jason (6/5): - The rooms have been partially refurbished, so could do with a full refurb. Should be an option to dine in for breakfast rather than a takeaway breakfast.
- Darren (6/5): A little odd…. - Admittedly, I didn’t check the small print regarding the very limited Reception hours, but the place was completely deserted when we arrived, with only a couple of cars in the acres of car park, making the £2.50 parking charge unnecessarily cheeky. No reply to calls initially & when we eventually found our way in - the front door is really stiff and needs a hefty push - after a 5 hour drive with elderly parents, early check-in, wasn’t apparently available. Another guest arrived at the same time and, when he’d worked out the entry process, he managed to check in early. Still virtually deserted when we returned 6 hours later after a family event locally, but the self-service check worked, provided you still have your QR code and booking reference handy. Food at the Indian restaurant was excellent. 20% food discount presumably for hotel guests, although they don’t serve alcohol, which was a pity because a cold beer would have gone down really well after a long day. Rooms were clean and comfortable although no kettle in one of our 2 rooms and, although the bathrooms were clean, neither shower worked adequately with either a dribble of cold, or pulses of scolding hot water being the only options. Obviously relatively recently refurbed with attempts to modernise the check-in process, but it just felt a bit lacking and impersonal.
- Murdo M (2/5): - Nothing to like or recommend this hotel. It was sad depressing and completely soulless. The exterior areas were dirty and unkept as well as the lobby and general reception area. We were shown to a room which had not been made up, soiled bed linen strewn around along with obvious previous occupation. A moody person reluctantly offered us another room which although serviced was nevertheless dated, tired and generally unwelcoming. The “breakfast to go” was hurriedly prepared and did not represent value for money as well as being tasteless.
Avoid this hotel at all costs
- Jackie (6/5): - The guy on reception was nice but the room was ok and the bathroom a bit scruffy.very strange water pressure issues to much via the taps but hardly any through the shower.
It wouldn't take much to make this into a really nice hotel.
- Caroline (6/5): - This hotel is very good for someone driving and looking for one night stay. The room is clean and confortable. We had problem with the check in timing. We were told we could come at 15:00 but no one was there. We had to come back at 16:30. Breakfast also is an issue: it is a breakfast to go, no restaurant to seat. You take your back and go back to eat it in your room. Same every day. It is a bit disapointing. Staff is trying her best with the option she has.
- John (4/5): - No one at reception on check in, No where to get any drink or refreshments, not even a machine. Restaurant is not as advertised, it’s Asian only, rooms were not clean, one room bathroom even had vomit stains left on toilet, doors slamming all night.
- Christine (10/5): - It was great staying at the hotel. Ideal for going to the family BBQ a short distance away.
We are waiting for a refund as we didnt have breakfast. Thank you for a comfortable stay.
- Zoe (6/5): Poor / Average - The receptionist was amazing, very welcoming and helpful. She delivered me a fan as the room was hot.
The bed was clean but the room has been poorly decorated, builders have not finished off well and remnants of paint on floor and doors was unsightly. The water wasn't running well, no pressure, and cold!! So I couldn't have a hot shower. Disappointing.
- Denice (6/5): - This place should be listed as a motel not a hotel. There is no bar and the restaurant does not serve alcohol or allow BYO.
The is no breakfast as advertised so that was a waste of 30pound. Staff were hardly around and unhelpful.
Do not recommend
- simon (2/5): - The whole check in process, the absence of any staff and the state of the room which was full of dead insects lead me to driving 3 hours home rather than sleep there. Stay away from this terribly run hotel
- Christina (4/5): - The room was clean but the bathroom in poor condition. There was very few condiments and only enough milk sachets for one drink. The plug for the kettle did not reach the plug socket and had to be used on the bedside cabinet. There was no mirror in the room so if you needed to dry your hair or put on make up, forget it.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Basic - An extremely average hotel. No staff on reception so self check in. Room very basic and felt a bit old fashioned and unclean. Water pressure in shower very low, almost not worth having a shower. Only one pillow per person on the bed and no spares or anyone on reception to ask. Fine for one night.
- Anamaria (4/5): - Everything is old, limited conditions
- Roy (8/5): Basic but priced accordingly - The Chichester is fairly basic but that’s to be expected for the price. It was roomy and comfortable, but the sound proofing could be better (I suspect we had newly weds in the next room who consumated their marriage at 11, 4 and 7am quite enthusiastically but clearly heard).
The water pressure in the shower was poor and the basic breakfast in a bag could be improved but overall we were happy with our stay
- Chris (4/5): Not great but cheap - Staff friendly and check in was quick. Rooms not exactly as shown in images.
Windows not able to open fully and due to lack of air conditioning the room was very hot!
The onsite restaurant is an Indian but the whole site is a dry site so no onsite bar which is disappointing to say the least.
Toby carvery 10mins drive down the road
- Elaine (6/5): - Its a budget hotel, very functional has everything you need. Has had a recent refurb so all freshly painted and new carpet but furniture still to be updated. Bathroom all refitted but water pressure not quite right. Need fans in rooms in the hot weather. No bar on site, could do with a vending machine for bottled water or snacks as only the indian restaurant on site (food is fabulous and you get a discount as staying in the hotel but doesn't serve alcohol and they don't let you bring your own which is a shame) There is a very nice pub in walking distance with great beer garden. Hotel Staff very friendly and helpful and the grab and go breakfast bag good value. No idea why there is a £2.50 parking charge when the only reason to park there is to use the hotel, car park also a bit scruffy needs a bit of tidying up no shortage of parking spaces. Nice little central garden area too. Just a 20 min drive to southend seafront. Self check in facility is good too. Overall good experience would happily use again.
- Shaun (8/5): Comfortable and convenient - Convenient and in a quiet location, self check in was very easy.
Good sized room and firm mattress.
A bit cheeky to then charge £2.50 a night for car parking when I arrived - seemed like a revenue grab for no reason as there’s a very large car park and it’s not in the centre of a town / city
- Margaret (2/5): - This hotel is appalling don’t waste your money, room dirty no working shower no hot water. No bar it’s a dry hotel which they don’t tell you, the stairwell to the room was full of cigarette ends, I booked this hotel for my daughter and husband for there first wedding anniversary, it was disgraceful bugs in the room cobwebs, I could go on and on and no reception and when you ring for anything like no hot water it’s takes 3 hours for them to attend, they spoilt there special day and wasted my money
- douglas (10/5): New Chichester hotel visit 3 days - The hotel is a bit out of the way
The hotel room was immaculate
The beds were really comfy
Reception only operates a certain times
Self check in is electronic fairly simple
Breakfast is continental (cheese toasty)
Apple juice coffee and fruit cup
On site Indian restaurant provides outstanding delicious selection of food
- Michael (10/5): - The property is situated in a quiet part of the country, the staff were friendly and very helpful. the rooms were well equipped and spotlessly clean. altogether nothing but an excellent short but enjoyable stop over. Thank you.
- John (4/5): - TV not working, shower not working, the grounds look terrible on arrival, I had to step over weeds to get out of the car
- Alaina (10/5): - Fantastic stay really clean rooms staff on front desk brillant will come again
- michael (4/5): Wouldnt stay again - Limited reception open hours. There Trying to do it all via computer not very welcoming. Therefore theres no one about to ask anyone if room was available early or to speak to about issues in room. Room itself dated and noisy radiators all night. Shower was a dribble at best and only hot water, so a dribble of boiling water for a shower.
- Dean (8/5): - Booked for one nights stay , very spacious room and comfortable bed and large shower . Very nice hotel and definitely would stay again
- Mick (10/5): - I think the property is quite unique and has history and I think they should make it more available at the hotel.
- Mandip (10/5): - It was nice and the restaurant was lovely
- Roy (10/5): - Very quiet secluded area for a retreat.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Disappointing - Very loud pump next to room which we persuaded them to turn off. Shower didn’t work for the whole stay. No mirror in barhroom! No option for a hot breakfast, only a 'bun in a bag'
Bedroom large and clean. Staff friendly but the whole thing didnt feel like a proper hotel.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Good but dated - Nice place and staff just dated and extra for parking which isn’t mentioned.
Option for pay for breakfast but breakfast is not available.
- Jacqueline (8/5): Nice - Friendly staff nice hotel good valve, would of been nuce to internet tv
- Adam (2/5): Don’t bother… it’s cheap, for a reason! - This, is not a nice hotel. My experience from start to finish was not great. From the staff being as useful as a fly trying to leave a room, to questionable stainage on the armchair; this has everything.
We arrived, to a £2.50 per day car parking charge… for a place in the middle of nowhere. A self service check in with some less than helpful reception staff on laptops and phones (the check in process is an iPad).
Arrive at the room, at 5pm (check in was 2 hours prior), the room was not made up, door unlocked, bed not made, dirty sink, urine in the toilet, teacups used, water glasses with lipstick stains and a carpet that hadn’t been hoovered - it wasn’t great. We dropped off our bags and advised the staff who popped us a WhatsApp 5 minutes later to say it’s been dealt with (the bed was made…)
That brings me on to the loud generator/compressor noise that loudly hums every 30 seconds outside rooms 107/108, 24 hours a day!
The bathroom isn’t too bad, other than sitting on the loo gives you pins and needles because it’s too long, and the shower has pressure for 30 seconds and then becomes as powerful as your grandad with a watering can.
We had a ground floor room that had no nets or privacy film, so everyone and their dog can peep through, annoyingly had to keep the curtains closed all day and night.
The TV didn’t work, no aerial or WiFi connection, good luck finding something to do but twiddle your thumbs!
Won’t be back!
- Rob (2/5): - Booked through Expedia. Check in from 3pm , we arrived at 3.05pm. Reception not staffed until 4.30pm , self check in on a computer screen. However our confirmation number from Expedia was not recognised on the computer. We had to go away and come back at 4.30pm when reception was staffed. Turns out it’s a new booking in system and we should have received an email from the hotel itself , which we didn’t.
We literally dropped our bags into our room and left to go to a friends dinner party.
Upon returning a little worse for wear at 1am we discovered an extremely annoying problem with our room (206). Every 20 seconds some sort of motor or pump would automatically switch on for 10 seconds then stop , on off on off all night long. I’ve recorded the noise from the bed on my phone. Don’t think I can upload it to this review.
Other niggly issues as well , but I’ll leave it at that. It’ll be a cold day in hell before I’d stay at the New Chichester Hotel again.
- Rotimi Alade (6/5): - Good experience
- Sam (4/5): - Decided to stay at property due to a passing visit and the pictures on the site looked really good for the price given. However, during check in we couldnt check in due to the machine we were using not working, when speaking to staff they knew it was playing up.....so why not put a out of order sign on the device. The room is very run down, paint chipped, old wardrobe doors, very low pressure in the shower, mastic still stuck to the door and walls / doors are thin. If you are a light sleeper i would not recommend staying here but if you want a cheap / quick stay then great. Positives, nice refirbuished bathroom but thats about it
- Bryant (8/5): Good price for room shame about the parking charge - Arrival was confusing as trying to book in with the console was not easy, luckily there were staff available to do this.
There is a ridiculous £2.50 parking charge given the place is in the midfle of nowhere, we were told it stops non residents parking there, given that i wasn't asked for my car registration I fail to see how that works. We were woken at 7.45 on the Sunday morning by an annoying throbbing news, when i spoke to someone in the reception area he told me he couldn't hear it and he hsd the window open........
When he finally got out of his seat and walked around the courtyard he agreed there was indeed a noise.
The accommodation was clean and comfortable. The shower worked in pulses, not a steady stream.
- Mick (10/5): - The room was clean and tidy and a good size. The price was excellent.
There was spilled paint on the floor outside the door of my room which was not very inviting, but apart from that everything else was good.
- Michael. (8/5): - Had to pay £2.50 per night extra for car parking in hotel residents area which was dirty and broken glass laying about.
The room was very spacious, plenty of furniture but rather dated. No mirror in the bathroom which was a bit odd as it had a shaver point. Had to go into the hallway to use mirror to remove makeup or shave.
- Kirsty (2/5): Awful - Check in was good we were offered an extra hour in the morning free of charge however this is the only positive thing I can say about our stay.
When you are paying for a hotel room I think that it’s a liberty that you then have to pay for parking, the hotel is not easy accessible so obviously if you are staying there you will have a car.
There was no mirror in the room for doing hair or make up, the only one was in the bathroom, the tv didn’t work, internet didn’t work, we had about 5 squares of toilet roll on the roll and no spare, the tea and coffee tray didn’t have any tea bags and only had one small pot of milk so we couldn’t even have a much needed coffee due to not actually being able to sleep.
There was a horrendous noise every 10 secs it sounded like we had a washing machine in the room with us, upon inspection my husband located the noise, there was some kind of pump in the ceiling in the hallway which had had the ceiling tile removed causing it sound even louder than it should have been. Needless to say we didn’t have a restful night. When I went to check out I wanted to raise my concerns with someone but reception is only made for minimal hours there was a WhatsApp number to contact someone so have tried that and I’m still awaiting a reply have also tried to call but the phone is switched off!!!
- Fiona (6/5): - Beds not comfortable. Parking chargeable although nothing near the property. No signage about charges. The continental breakfast was dire! Restaurant caused very strong smells to permeate the rooms that come off the courtyard. Not enough supplies of tea and uht milk. Clean but decor very dated and tired. Usable for a cheap stay although price changes almost daily. Feel that £50 should be the maximum for this property.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Rooms are basic and need updating. Rooms are very cold, radiator doesn't seem to work, but makes a lot of noise.
Bathroom not very clean, more care could be taken when cleaning.
Reception staff nice and welcoming.
- OMAR (4/5): 8 legged freaks were amongst us.... - We thought the hotel is nice and good value for money however, you get what you pay for, I guess in this instance.
We found 3 large spiders that were fast and scary looking. So in terms of cleanliness, we are not too keen. Also, paying for parking, it should be free since it's remote.
- colin (10/5): The best - Our stay was excellent the staff were very helpful and. Friendly the food was the best we had for a long time. It goes without saying we had a great stay and we will return.
- jazmin (6/5): - Didn’t like you fact you had to pay extra for parking, that should have been included in the room! The Indian food was excellent but don’t serve alcohol. And breakfast wasn’t a proper breakfast like a hotel should be, (breakfast on the go) after asking staff about the breakfast we got told to come down in the morning and collect it before we go, so we did at 10:30 but was told we missed breakfast it stopped at 10! It was only a toastie and a drink! Bed was very comfortable and clean and room we very quiet! But need up dating and smelt very musky in the room
- Adnan (10/5): Excellent hotel to experience! - The room was spacious, and the bed was incredibly comfortable. The bathroom had high-end toiletries.
The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, going above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable.
We enjoyed the delicious and freshly made food at the hotel restaurant.
- Gary (8/5): - The restaurant and food were very good, but its a non alcoholic restaurant. When youve travelled a long way, its sometimes nice to have a glasd if wine with your dinner. The staff were really friendly and helpful.
Our particular room was clean and spacious. The only negative things i have to say is that there seemed to have been something like a massarator or something like that that kept pulsating during the night and the water pressure wasnt brilliant. The curtains weren't great either. When you closed them they seem to be so far away from the window that you could still see into the room. I would stay here again.
- Robert (8/5): - Very clean room, also peaceful location though awake early in summer month stay as curtains were very thin.
Very efficient check in and out.
Good value for money overall.
- Shaun (10/5): First stay - Brilliant service easy to contact staff via what’s app nice and quiet place to stay
- chris (2/5): Cheap - First impressions.. untidy grounds.. weeds everywhere.. rubbish/old room furniture dumped outside
Very minimalist room.. one chair.. one bed side cabinet.. so nothing for one of us to put anything on.
Dated decor.. poorly decorated.. not enough towels
But the bed and pillows were very comfortable!
Had to pay to park!!
- Lucy (2/5): - The first time you stay with them they put you in a lovely big and refurbished room and anytime after that they stick you in a dirty old fashioned tiny room. Tried to complain to reception and they couldn’t have cared less and told me to take it up with Expedia. Avoid at all costs, not clean, safe or even anyone around to help. DO NOT STAY HERE IF YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN
- Mildred (8/5): - It’s a good size room. It’s a good place to stay when you are working away. 13-15 minutes drive to Basildon city centre. In a nice quiet location.
Hot shower very slow probably needs more pressure on hot water.
Sometimes the cleaner make your bed up but don’t clean your coffee cups and not clean the bathroom haha. Sometimes no cleaning service and the rubbish you left outside your door in the morning it’s still be there when you come back at night lol. I’m not complaining but I hope my comment will help improve this hotel.
Parking should be free for guests as it is out of town location.
Bazaan restaurant, great food. No alcohol which is understandable in respect of religion but not serving tap water is disappointing. I ordered a mocktail but I want to drink a glass of water after the food and sweet cocktail but I was told they don’t serve tap water, you can only buy a small bottle of water for £2.
I will be happy to book this hotel again but also hoping to see an improvement of there services.
- Josen (8/5): - Shower not working properly
- Andrew (4/5): - Couldn't check in
No towels in room
Room stank of paint
Shower had really low pressure
- Edward (8/5): A gem of a hotel with a few quirks. - They need to explain that they are a dry site. There is no alcohol allowed on site. Not that I’m a big drinker, but I do like a drink while watching football.
The TVs are not linked to the WiFi so there is no way to use some of the Smart Tv functions. This is company policy.
I paid for breakfast , but didn’t realise it was a toastie, cooked in the reception area. It was actually quite good, but a surprise.
Right they are the small negatives. Now for the positives.
The hotel has been refurbished and the rooms and especially the bathroom are good.
The staff are very good and extremely helpful.
The onsite Indian restaurant is exceptional and with a 50% discount it’s even better!!
Finally, the price for the area is very competitive.
Unless you’re an alcoholic, don’t hesitate to book.
- Janis (10/5): - Very friendly, helpful and professional staff.
Restaurant food amazing.
Would recommend .
- Oladipupo (10/5): - The staff were quite helpful and the on site restaurant (Bazzaan) Manager was really good at making guests feel comfortable. Food from the restaurant was also fantastic. I would recommend a stay.
- aaron (10/5): - The new owners are friendly and have a great restaurant connected, its all very new and i really hope more people find this hidden gem.
I will be back
