- David (8/5): - Kind hosts who explain in detail how everything is run and ready to offer advice/recommendations. Cleanliness was excellent. Good location, walking distance to amenities and the main attractions. They charge a 600 yen/day heating fee, which significantly adds to the cost but isn't mentioned anywhere on the booking page. You hand in your key every time you go out and pick it up at the front desk again when you return. You also have to advise them of expected arrival/bath times - I didn't have a big problem with this but it may not be for everyone.

- Lobo Ramos (10/5): Traditional and warm ryokan - It’s a small traditional ryokan run by a mother and her daughter. From the moment you arrive, you can feel how kind and polite they are. It’s a very beautiful place, and the rooms are traditional, with tatami and futon. They also gave me a kimono to use as pajamas.
The lady who runs the place doesn’t speak English, but she is very friendly. She even gave me a small gift, which was a very nice gesture. Check-in at 4:00 PM is quite late, and check-out at 10:00 AM is too early. I usually rate this negatively (definitely 1 or 2 points negatively), but the warmth of the place makes it worth it.

- J_spence_ (9/5): A relaxed one night stay in a cute and traditional Ryokan. - The owners were very welcoming and extremely friendly. The Ryokan itself was very clean and well kept - as well as this, the room was cosy and the location was superb.
Perhaps my experience was inflated by the fact that it was my first stay in a traditional Ryokan, but due to the hospitality of the owners, I’d recommend this to everyone. The only downside was that our view out of the room was a multi story car park - however I don’t believe this is a problem when staying in a town such as Hakodate.

- Rohan (10/5): Warm, welcoming and traditional. - The proprietress and her daughter are very kind and hospitable. It is traditional and comfortable, no frills. One small issue is they only have one bath, so if multiple guests need to bathe at the same time one would have to wait. However they try their best to avoid this by organising times.
- John (10/5): Relaxing and comfortable - The experience wa at the personal level. The old lady and her daughter were very accommodating! A one of a kind Japanese hospitality. None at all! Everything was exceptional.
- Kana (7/5): -
- Andy (10/5): - The owners of the ryokan where extremely kind. Even though we didn’t speak the same language, we still talked through translation apps for a long time. A lot of love and care in this house, great experience.
- Jocelyn (10/5): - It was very quiet and pretty, knowing about the history of the place was great also owners were awesome. Will definitely stay here if I come back to Hakodate.

- Riley (9/5): Ryokan super close to the station - The location was excellent. 6 minutes walk to the station and 3 minutes to the nearby laundromat. The room was very comfortable thanks to the kerosene heater, and there was a convenient space for luggage. It won't be an issue in the warmer months, but during the winter the hallways and especially the bathroom can become very cold. Also, there is a small additional fee that you pay at check-in to cover the costs of running the heater in the room. It makes sense, I just wasn't aware of it until I arrived.

- Konstantinos (9/5): Traditional stay, lovely hostess - I loved the reception and the atmosphere of the place. Okamisan and her daughter Hitomisan are lovely. Okamisan even gave me a small handmade gift before I left! They were really hospitable. I happened to be alone in the whole ryokan, so I had the bath and toilets to myself!
I also loved the room, which was traditional. The bed was comfortable and the bedding was warm. A kimono and towels were provided.
All in all, I loved my stay and I would pick it again if I happen to be in Hakodate again. It felt like I had my Obachan hosting me. The location is also excellent! In walking distance from the station and the morning market The building is a bit old, but I really didn't mind that since the toilets and the room were in great condition. A small inconvenience is that you have to communicate about when you are coming back, since you don't get a key for the outside door and someone needs to wait for you.

- Damiano (8/5): -
- Richard (10/5): - Lovely owners. They were very kind and welcoming. Thank you.
- Elizabeth (6/5): Not for me personally - Good location close to Hakodate station, nice staff, outlet close to bed. Only one toilet and bathroom for all guests. Only one hand towel to dry hands with. Hair in the bathtub despite having to reserve the tub ahead of time. Spotty wifi that wouldn't connect to my device more often than not.
- Tetsuo (9/5): Superb -
- Eduard (10/5): Good stay in this tradition ryokan, very comfortable place and nostalgic atmosphere. Absolutely recommend! -
- So (9/5): Superb - A very traditional Japanese ryokan. The old lady was so kind and friendly.
- Judy (9/5): A night in traditional Japan - Henmi Ryokan is a traditional Japanese inn. The rooms are tatami mat and you sleep on a futon with a bean pillow. There is a shared bathroom and shared toilets. The guest rooms are on the second floor, with family rooms available. There is a large communal area on the first floor. Hasegawa San, the owner, is friendly and so helpful, she even helped me park. The ryokan is steps away from Hakodate train station, tram stop, entertainment area and the fish market. There is free, covered parking. If you want to experience a traditional Japanese inn, this is the place to stay and the location cannot be beaten for the price. I would happily stay again because this is exactly what I was looking for.
- Wongphutthi (8/5): Very good - Very closed to the Station and market but a bit trouble for the fixed time to take a bath.
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional - The owner is nice and friendly, and nice to talk to. I speak some Japanese and it's really great to get a chance to practice it with her. She is really accommodating.
The ryokan itself is OK. A bit old but it adds to the charm to the place! Nothing.
- Jeffrey (10/5): Exceptional - I really enjoyed my stay at Henmi Ryokan, and definitely recommend it to anyone staying in Hakodate! The host is absolutely wonderful; even though I only speak a little Japanese, thanks to her patience (and some help from google translate!) it wasn't an issue at all. I found the Japanese style room here to be very comfortable and a really nice experience.
- Rachel (10/5): Very simple and traditional ryokan, a really value for money place to rest for the night - The older lady owner was really nice. She tries really hard to communicate in English too Only thing is the lack of power points and it could get noisy from outside and other users.
Light sleepers may have some problems resting...
- Frank (9/5): Superb - Very friendly and accommodating host, close to train and bus station, not too far a walk to the central, touristy harbour area. Nothing really.
- Riccardo (9/5): Superb -
- Kathleen (10/5): Lovely Ryokan amazing experience. - The owner was so nice and accomodating. The shower has shampoo and soap provided. The room was beautiful. The walls are a bit thin but I sleep with headphones anyway and I’m a heavy sleeper.
- Charles (10/5): Had an amazing two nights staying here! - Henmi Ryokan is a wonderful little place to relax while visiting Hakodate. Its a short walk away from the JR Hakodate Terminal and the fish market. Futons and the room were comfortable and clean and the proprietor is a wonderful lady. I do wish our Japanese was better so we could have conversed with her more. Unfortunately the restaurant section was closed during our stay so we missed out on the delicious food other reviewers have mentioned, but Henmi Ryokan is so close to the Fish market that there are plenty of food options around to make up for it.
- Vincenzo (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jingrui (10/5): Exceptional - Location is great. Very convenient to guide around the city. And the host is super nice None
- Steven (9/5): A delightful haven In Hakodate - The owner was very welcoming and helpful. A traditional place to stay close to the JR station and the fish market.
- Lauri (9/5): Superb -
- Julia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ian (10/5): Beautiful traditional ryokan with a lovely host - Beautiful traditional guest room with tatami mats. Warm and cozy. Lovely elderly lady who owns the place.
- Gabrielle (10/5): Exceptional - Its an older building in a traditional Japanese style. The furnishings are consequently a bit worn, but the beds were very comfortable and the owner was delightful and clearly put a lot of thought into the design and amenities. The tea and hot water was a particularly nice touch. I would stay again!
- Patrick (10/5): Exceptional - Such a cosy ryokan and lovely host. Felt like we were welcomed into their home. I’m only sorry I don’t speak more Japanese!
- Zhengde (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Zi (9/5): Authentic traditional ryokan experience - The owner was so friendly and accommodating of our requests. Even though our Japanese was not great, she was very patient with explaining and re-explaining the instructions. Check-in and check out were simple. The room was very clean and comes with bath robes to wear indoors. The location is convenient (close to tram station) for exploring the old town part of Hakodate.
- Bullock (10/5): Exceptional - Immaculately kept Ryokan in a great location. Teishoku breakfast was delicious and featured local specialities. Caught up on much needed sleep in a very comfortable, pleasant and quiet room.
- Rachel (9/5): Authentic Japanese accommodation with a lovely, attentive innkeeper. - The innkeeper is lovely and attentive. I was traveling with my elderly, Japanese mother and wanted to stay in a Japanese style accommodation that is locally run. I suspect there are fewer and fewer of these as time passes, so if you're wanting to experience one, enjoy it sooner than later. My mother really enjoyed chatting with the innkeeper as she does not get a chance to speak in her native tongue much living in the U.S. The breakfasts involved local seafood and was served at a communal table. It felt homey. The location is very good to the train station and seafood markets. There was not anything we disliked. One thing to note: there was not an elevator so if you're carrying heavy luggage, consider asking if it's possible to stay on the first floor if you may be concerned with carrying your luggage up a flight of stairs.
- Johanna (9/5): Superb - Extremely friendly owner, she patiently waited for us as the train got delayed. We had a very big room with traditional tatami mats and a small sitting area to enjoy our tea.
Definitely recommend to book the breakfast! It was one of the best we got in Japan. You can feel that the place is bit older, but in the end it is part of its charm.
- Fang (9/5): Superb -
- Kenta (9/5): Superb - The hostess was super friendly and eager to help, made us feel welcome. Easy to find location.
I recommend breakfast. You feel like a Japanese traveller, and she tries to make as much as possible if not everything is locally sourced.
- Maciej (7/5): Good - Good location, super nice old lady running the place, comfortable futon and tasty Japanese breakfast. Internet disconnecting quite often, no air conditioning, old furniture with characteristic old wood smell. Generally expected too much for limited price I guess
- Paolo (9/5): Nice little ryokan in an excellent location. - I loved the ryokan athmosphere, and the lady who manages it was really nice and helpful. If I didn't speak Japanese, though, it might have been a bit difficult to deal with her and with the written Japanese around...
- B (10/5): More than service, it is take care. - Breakfast is Japanese style that prepare for a fully set for me. The hot water in bathroom prepare when I come back. I stay here for three days and I thought that I be one of the landlord’s family.
- Ulrike (10/5): Exceptional - The owner is amazing. Nothing
- Rustydynamo (8/5): Very good - The lady at the front was really nice! She showed me around the room, gave me some tips on what to do and was just really nice to talk to! Everything was smooth from check in to check out There was no air conditioning in the room, just a fan. Despite the room being rather comfortable the summer heat compared with a mosquito meant that I barely slept. This is not that big of an issue though.
- Katia (9/5): Superb - Excellent place.
Not easy to find traditionnel place liké this.
Highly recommanded
- Scarisbrick (10/5): Exceptional -
- Brigid (10/5): Delightful authentic ryokan close to Hakodate station. - The traditional ryokan experience was wonderful. Out host was kindly and the food was excellent and authentic Hakodate cooking. Clean and comfortable. We felt welcome and well cared-for. The stay was a good price and not expensive at all. The host has very little English. The building is not new, but that is part of the charm of the place.
- Hein (9/5): Superb -
- Anna (8/5): Very good -
- David (8/5): Great value-for-money option! - I found this accommodation to be a great value-for-money option. It's conveniently located next to both the market and the city station. The owner of the property was exceptionally friendly, and the room was exactly as I anticipated it would be. It would be more convenient if the bathroom sink area was separated from the hallway.
- Greyan (10/5): Exceptional - staff is best that can be, will help as much as they can to make u feel at home
- Topi.s (9/5): Superb -
- Jonathan (9/5): Superb -
- Jiří (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michael (8/5): Real local gem close to JR Hakodate station. - Wonderful hospitality from oba-san from the beginning to the end. Recommended as an authentic ryokan experience!
- Toon (10/5): A very comfortable and cozy stay with the owner being very friendly. - Just a 2 min walk from Hakodate Market and Station. The owner is very friendly and kind. A very nice ryokan experience in the city area. None
- Christoph (8/5): Convenient located with traditional Japanese style rooms - Nice traditional ryokan with Japanese style room and tasty Japanese style breakfast.
Location is convenient - only a short walk from JR main train station (not the Shinkansen station!). The morning market is just three minutes away. To the brick warehouses it is an easy 10 to 15 minute walk.
Staff was very friendly.
very good value for money! all fine.
Note: The name of the ryokan is only displayed in Japanese - so it’s easy to overlook it at the first time as the backstreet looks a bit empty. and not too fancy (it’s close to the APA hotel tower).
