Guest Reviews
- Nicole (10/5): -
- Jenny (10/5): Wish we could have stayed longer, but transiting through the area on a road trip. - Design of the villa was fantastic. Felt quite private even though we were close to other guests. Garden bath was lovely. Host was kind enough to bring us more firewood.
- Patrick (10/5): Don’t hesitate just book it!!!! - Amazing place, style foodwise and wines!
Amazing from a to z
- Simone (10/5): -
- Martijn (10/5): - Nice people, great location. Very calm. Everything was great
- Philipp (10/5): A dream. Full stop. - There is hardly any better stay for one or several nights in and around Oudtshoorn than at De Kombuys. So friendly. So cosy, so relaxing. With perfect Wagyu meat and own vine. We tried the Chardonnay 2002 and the Shiraz with the Wagyu prime steak. Feels like home when you are from South England, the Benelux or the north of France, since the architecture of the Dutch Farm house looks famliliar. Maybe those creating the Farm in 1814 where flemish?! Nothing

- kvmto (5/5): Over priced accommodation for a below average stay. - Good location between Oudsthoorn and Prince Albert. Great location should you plan to visit the nearby Cango Caves. Lovely scenery. Although the unit photos is a fair representation of the unit, we felt our unit was on the tired side. Scuffed and peeling wall paint, cheap furniture and a general lacklustre feeling about it. The plunge pool and lawn outside was rather unappealing too. Considering the nightly rate of the units and comparing it with similar properties we have stayed in the Klein Karoo, De Kombuys is over rated and over priced. We could not wait to leave.
- Brenda (9/5): Delicious and relaxing stay - Attractive and atmospheric. Loved outdoor shower. Peaceful & beautiful location. Fabulous restaurant specialising in their own wagyu beef. Staff welcoming Bed a bit low
- Caroline (10/5): -
- Nico (8/5): Very pleasant stay. - It was amazing, however not many options
- Gilbert (9/5): -
- Marion (10/5): It was a great weekend away at De Kombuys,we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. - The attention to detail and the thoughtful amenities in the room was wonderful. The staff were friendly and attentive and the breakfasts were excellent I could not find fault with our stay.
- Michael (10/5): Excellent stay in rural tranquility in vinyards - Rural tranquility with all the amentities needed like comfortable bed, aircon, shower and bath tub, spacious and next door a restaurant with really delicious food. Great stay. Old Dutch style well reconstructed and well equipped.
- Christopher (10/5): Tolles Weingut mit schönen Villen und super Essen - Tolles Restaurant, traumhafte Lage, super Personal
- Renate (10/5): - Einfach nur schön! Ein kleines Paradies!
- Peter (9/5): Would definitely stay here again! - Everything! Peace and quiet. Beautiful accommodation. Friendly staff. Only one complaint. The ac machine was old and made quite a bit of noise.

- Jelena (10/5): - What an absolute treat to spend 3 nights here! Our family of 5 stayed in Shiraz House with the private plunge pool and vineyard in front of it! They thought about every detail and went above and beyond to make sure that our stay was perfect! Breakfast was a treat, again with fantastic food and an amazing view.
We will be back. A good suv is recommended for a dirt road between the main road and a guesthouse.
- Mareike (10/5): Absolute Empfehlung!

- Julia (10/5): Gorgeous estate with lovely people and great food and service! - This was an amazing place. Beautiful views, secluded, romantic, gorgeous architecture and amazing food. The service was impeccable. Thos would be a great place for a wedding or honeymoon. We will be returning!
- Patrick (10/5): - The property is unique and the rooms/houses are very nice. The restaurant is excellent and the staff was very welcoming. Nothing
- Michael (10/5): - What a wonderful place and accommodation! We felt incredibly comfortable. The hosts warmly and effortlessly catered to all our wishes. The adjoining restaurant is fantastic—I had the best Wagyu steak of my life there. We hope to return to this magical place for another vacation soon. Many, many thanks!
- Ledoux (10/5): -
- Jörg (9/5): - The food in the restaurant was amazing, and the Chef super nice.
- Rafael (9/5): -
- Mark (9/5): Superb - Really enjoyed one night stay. Thoughtfully designed cottage in estate they have restored. Helpful and friendly staff. Absolutely excellent food and home produced wine. Would happily return.
- Fam. (10/5): Excellent!!! - Everything was great: design, extras, amazing food, hospitality -
- Frits (7/5): Good - I lost my bril . It is a pitte
- Marilyn (7/5): A beautiful farm with great food, staff and a very comfy bed but more attention to detail is needed. - The breakfast was superb and served in our cabin. Dinners were out of this world but extremely expensive - a more affordable Ostrich alternative (plus more vegetarian options) would be welcome. The farm itself is really beautiful, so the walks are lovely. After quite a bit of confusion, the staff went out of their way to make up for the shortfalls in the accommodation and we will be back next year. Our cabin wasn't as well equipped as all the other country cabins we've stayed in, which always include an oven, braai and pizza oven and plenty of crockery, cutlery and basic essentials. The heating system of the pool is very outdated and in the end, failed entirely, which was disappointing. The cabins themselves are very rustic and definitely need some TLC (the bath outlet for example does not seal, which means the water leaks out while you're in the tub) but it's nothing that plaster, paint and a bit of elbow grease can't resolve. Our water and coffee pods weren't replenished and our cutlery was taken away to be washed and then not returned. Our bill at the end was incorrect which led to a slow check out. Some signage and a path to the restaurant entrance would be super helpful.
- Mark (10/5): If you love wagyu and wine, than there's no better! - Awesome location, villas and divine food, if you love wagyu and wine, than there's no better! none
- Yvonne (10/5): Fabulous !! - The location was beautiful and the finishes to the unit we stayed in just beautiful !!
Loved the outdoor bath !!
Loads of instant hot water ! I would have loved it to have been offered to heat our little pool before arriving as staying only one night meant other than a quick dip I was able to make use of it as it was a bit too cold .
- Yves (10/5): Exceptional - Great place for a relaxed stay.
Delicious food, clean and charming room!
- Bram (10/5): Amazing! - Beautiful location, great accomodation, very friendly staff, great food
- Robert (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful setting. Marvelous accommodations. Delicious food.
Managers Gideon and Lee were both super helpful and made our stay an absolute pleasure. We arrived with a slow puncture and they entirely sorted us out in every way. We will be back.
- Jenna (10/5): Dream valley stay - This is a slice of heaven, and we felt very lucky to have found it. Special mention for the views, incredible food and brilliant indoor/outdoor bathrooms. The villa was so well considered and designed, and the team could not have been more welcoming to our ten year old daughter. Lots of happy families scarcely believing they could still have such a stylish stay, but also plenty of couples enjoying the serenity too. Hard recommend!
- Alexandra (10/5): Exceptional - Everything was clean, amazing quality and there was every little detail thought of. The little touches by the staff were amazing (chocolates on the pillows etc.). The restaurant was incredible. N/a
- Palesa (10/5): Amazing, I highly recommend this place!!! - Everything! The place was an amazing experience, the host and staff was exceptional.
The views were so beautiful and restaurant was a whole other experience. WOW None
- Andrew (10/5): Great getaway spot, worth going out your way to stay here - The plunge pool was amazing and heated to the perfect temperature, make sure to request this with your booking! Staff were lovely and helpful. The setting is beautiful with views over the vineyards and the mountains beyond. The food at the restaurant is fantastic, had one of the best steaks of our lives here, highly recommend.
- Mariska (7/5): Very nice for over seas customers only. It is not good value money for locals. - Remote and private ( only Spitskop chalet is private)
Nice bathroom!
Wine was very good
Food was expensive but very tasty and well presented. Very rustic but still with a luxury feel. Could maybe fix the toilet roll holder and towelrails to the wall in stead of free standing...
WiFi did not work properly. No/ poor cell reception
Aircon was noisy
Staff was not very attentive ( room wasn't made up before 11pm)
Garden can use some upkeep ( get rid of weeds and tidy up a bit.?)
- Wolter (9/5): Superb -
- Lynette (10/5): R&R in the most beautiful Klein Karoo setting - Beautiful Location and Interiors
Great Food
Great Ambiance
- Davud (10/5): worth the money!! - great location and staff
- Arthur (10/5): Just wow! - Wow, what a place! So beautiful, so quiet, fantastic food. Our room was more than expected.
- Marlene (10/5): Exceptional - It was quiet and serene......it was well stocked with coffee, tea, sherry and snacks. Beautiful farm. Great hosts. Gideon and Carla are super friendly and helpful and always available. They make a difference to your stay. Restaurant on the premises makes it easy and the breakfast was beautifully presented and delightful. The beds are quite low and the mirrors and basins in the bathrooms quite high for short people.....it was discussed with the host and will be brought to the owners attention. It however made no difference to a wonderful 2 nights spent at De Kombuys
- Florian (10/5): Beautiful setting, super high quality, fantastic food - Beautiful setting, super high quality, fantastic food Nothing
- James (10/5): The most incredible setting, perfect staff, delicious and well thought out food. 10/10 would recommend to everyone - The villas are amazing - we loved the attention to detail in the design. The staff were also perfect - they made our stay our top stay in South Africa Nothing
- Nicolaas (9/5): Superb -
- Hein (10/5): Exceptional -
- Imtiaz (3/5): Poor - Location Super cold rooms and not enough heating system.
- Kayleong (7/5): Good -
- Luana (4/5): Not impressed and can’t justify the price. - The Restaurant Run down and cold accomodation
- Sareena (9/5): Beautiful place - It was a lovely place, really nice to feel cut off. The rooms don’t have WiFi, and it would be nice to have a couple more option for non beef eaters at the restaurant.
- Dee (10/5): Exceptional - This hotel was very cozy. It had a romantic vibe. The decor was great and the food was amazing. I would stay here again. 10/10
- Lynsey (9/5): Superb -
- Yves (9/5): Superb - Greats little paradise in Swartberg Mountains. Simple but all you need and good quality.
- Andrea (9/5): Peaceful farm retreat - A lovely concept for a quiet retreat on a wine farm. A lot of thought and care had gone into the decor of the rooms which are beautifully decorated. We enjoyed the outdoor bath and shower, sadly the bad weather meant we couldn’t use the pool. Lots of nice little touches like the bottle of wine on arrival, bath bombs, slippers, candles etc. we ate in the restaurant which was also delicious! There is no wifi in the rooms which I think needs to be more clearly advertised. It wouldn’t normally be a huge problem but there was bad weather during our stay and meant we had a lot of downtime but weren’t able to plan ahead as much for the next day. There is also loadshedding but they provide candles etc in the room.
- Gareth (7/5): Good -
- Gilles (10/5): recommended for people that love peaceful and classy places - very classy and authentic place, tasteful and elegant. location is perfect in a beautiful setting. villa’s are private, and lovely. food in restaurant is excellent no wifi in the rooms, but That’s a detail
- Scott (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jean-marc (10/5): See above - The hotel is situated in a valley surrounded by mountains, vineyards and grazing Wagyu cattle. It is a magical position in the Klein Karoo. The villlas are beautifully decorated and the attention to detail is really great. Lee was very attentive and very efficient. The breakfasts were beautifully laid out and delicious. The restaurant served the most delicious wagu beef I have ever tasted. This is definitely a place for beef eaters! All brilliant
- Elaineb (10/5): Peaceful and relaxing location with wonderful views in a beautiful villa. - Very peaceful and relaxing settings. Exceptional attention to detail and thoughtful touches in the villa. The outdoor plunge pool was delightful after a long drive and the outdoor bath and shower was a bonus. Great breakfast to start the day. Nothing about the property - it was all wonderful
- Chris (10/5): Exceptional -
- Christoph (10/5): It was my second time at De Kombuys and this place is still something special with lots of amenities. - The love for details Nothing
- Luigi (10/5): What a special place and the staff are absolutely wonderful - Beautiful location and the food is amazing. Nothing
- Kelly (10/5): Quiet and picturesque - The farm surrounding is picturesque and we loved the cabin. What a nice touch to have a gift for the children too! The hospitality was excellent, I highly recommend this if you are looking for some peace and tranquility.
- Vanessa (9/5): Superb -
- Anonymous (10/5): Relaxing and peaceful stay - Beautiful location, views and food!
- Chanel (10/5): My new hidden gem of peace and luxury! - It is our new hidden gem! The farm is gorgeous, the food is amazing and the rooms were soooo luxurious! It was worth every penny and I am definitely going again! It was the best start to a holiday.... you can't help but to relax and EVERYTHING smells nice :-) NA
- Karen (9/5): Perfect overnight. - Perfect overnight stop in a beautiful location. Lovely room. Property was lovely. New staff who seemed to lack training and direction which meant slightly disappointing levels of service overall.
- Rebecca (9/5): A peaceful & idyllic location with extremely stylish accommodation. - A very stylish villa with a small private plunge pool situated in this idyllic wine & Wagyu beef estate with a backdrop of mountains.
Great location to explore Oudtshoorn (25 mins), the Cango caves & drive over the incredible Swartberg Pass.
The showers (both inside & outside) were excellent, and load-shedding didn’t cause a problem as we were informed about times.
Loved meeting the adorable dogs! Although dinner on the first night was excellent, we were the only guests eating, and staying three nights we chose to eat out for that reason (and few options on the menu). Maybe not a good place for vegans.
- Insa (10/5): Breathtaking accommodation and staff! - Amazing accommodation with wonderful staff and great service. We had a fantastic 2 nights and loved every single thoughtful detail in our villa. From the little welcome toy for our kid, the bottle of wine to the different lights that were placed throughout the rooms during load shedding. The meals we had for dinner and breakfast were fantastic - best food we had during our whole trip. Only a detail but the mattresses were quite hard, thus not very comfy for us.
- Enrico (10/5): Absolute bliss in the Klein Karoo. - We said we'll be back! Second visit and the villa was perfect: Well appointed and comfortable. The complimentary Chardonnay was amazing and the small plunge pool refreshing after a long drive. The staff is very friendly and The Marbled Wagyu Restaurant serves exceptionally good food - thank you for accommodating us vegetarians. De Kombuys is a beautiful farm with exceptional views and conveniently close to the Cango Caves. Nothing.
- Piet (10/5): De Kombuys is a destination rather than a stop on the way to a destination. - What was there not to like about De Kombuys? The tranquility and the great location surrounded by the mountains? The intimate setting and the great personalized service and care by the staff? The high quality of all meals? The attention for detail in the nicely designed villa's? Congratulations to De Kombuys owners and staff for this unique package which makes it a destination rather than a stop on the way to a destination. Nothing that I can think of.
- Barnes (10/5): Exceptional -
- Paulien (10/5): Exceptional - We stayed at The Kombuys for 3 nights and it was fantastic! The breakfast and diner were delicious. The location is amazing, it is so quiet and beautiful there. It is very close to the Swartbergpass and the Cango Caves, so that is perfect. The staff was very friendly and kind and we absolutely enjoyed our stay at The Kombuys!
- Sara (10/5): Exceptional - everything amazing missing Wi-Fi
- Philip (10/5): Exceptional - Great farm venue
Restaurant was clean and staff friendlyl Very limited menu when staying more than 2 days like we did.
- Malte (9/5): great stay - the owners have some really good sense for Details. Food was amazing.
