- 426pengchengl (2/5): Not a reliable hotel - They cancelled on us 2 weeks before our visit. most of the good hotels are booked in the region now. Not only no compensation but because of exchange rate differences we'll get less money than we paid to reserve it. We are left choosing between hotels without dinner, hotels without onsens, and a ryokan 3x the price.

We didn't know what to expect at our first Onsen but Kusatsu Onsen Buon exceeded our expectations. It is conveniently located by Yubatake Hot Springs and Sainokawara Park. It has a very zen and peaceful atmosphere. We booked a 90 min full body massage at the hotel and the masseuses were spectacular. They addressed every aching body concern after our hike! The breakfast was also plus. I would highly recommend them to my friends and book a stay with them again!

- pixieSG (10/5): Nice place not overly crowded - This ryokan is close to the bus terminal and main square yet not too massively big. There were still crowd control with limit on maximum number of person in each onsen so it was a pleasant experience with about 3-4 persons in the onsen when we visit during our stay. Dinner and breakfast (excellent) were delicious. Only 1 check-in/out staff speaks minimal English and she used google translate to help during communication - we managed fine. Meals were in private dinning room and staff who spoke good English explained the various courses. A pleasant experience. We stayed in the traditional room without bath and it was clean and comfortable. Would recommend!

- TAKAYUKI (10/5): 梅雨入りしてたので食事も温泉もこの宿で大正解だった。 - 草津温泉は初めてでしたが湯畑や西河原公園からの立地や口コミを見て2食付のプランで望雲に決めました。 バスターミナルから徒歩で10分くらい。 私達は早く着いたので西河原公園を少し寄り道してからチェックイン、夜に部屋飲みしたいなら湯畑を先に行ってコンビニで買い物を済ましておけば良かったです。 夜は雨が降っていたので食事も温泉も 全て館内で楽しめて尚良かったです。 夕食は18:30で決められてましたのでアクティブな方は時間調整は必要です。 個室に案内されて食べきれない程の品数と 追加のお料理、旅館のサービスなのかも？ すき焼きは冷めてしまうので固形燃料を追加してもらう方が良い！お米も最高に美味しかったです。朝食も品数多く見た目も綺麗でした。 コスパを考えると充分に納得のいける内容の老舗旅館でした。4〜5人グループで行くと尚楽しいかと思います。

- TATSUKO (8/5): 温泉旅行に最適な旅館です！ - 接客も明るく気持ち良く過ごせました。 お湯もはさすが日本の三大名泉だけありぬるっとして肌がしっとりする感触で最高でした。脱衣所にはフェイスタオルが積まれており、気軽に何度でも入ることが出来、とても気の利いたサービスと思いました。食事も個室で落ち着き、味も美味しかったです。量は私達夫婦が割と少食な方ですが美味しいので完食したら食後1時間位は動けないほどでした^_^ 旅館から歩いて2、3分のところに草津温泉の観光名所湯畑があり夕食後にライトアップされた湯畑や土産店を散策して温泉旅行の醍醐味を味わうことが出来て最高の旅行でした。

- 495samuele (10/5): Wonderful onsen getaway in a picturesque mountain village - My wife, son, daughter and in-laws from Tokyo visited this onsen at the end of September. We have been to many impressive ryokan onsen, but this one was particularly impressive. We have had limited travel opportunities during the past 18 months, and we are very happy we chose Boun Onsen. It was beautifully nestled in the hillside surrounded by picturesque mountains and volcanic mineral streams. Nearby were a variety of omiyagi and street food choices near the main city center where the hot springs are featured . The staff were extremely professional and polite and were Japanese efficient. The rooms were spacious and the tatami mats and bedding wete warm and cozy and stocked with a wonderful green tea set. They have three separate onsen that alternate between men and ladies so everyone can experience the wonderful natural baths. The food was exquisitely presented and the flavors matched the artistic presentation of each meal. This experience was well worth the reasonably priced getaway and we highly recommend this Ryokan!

The hotel onsen were spacious and relaxing and I also tried the onsens around Kusatsu during my stay as well and I would say that the ones in the hotel are on par with the main onsens in town. The rooms are standard Japanese style, nothing remarkably different, but still quite comfortable. Overall, highly recommended and well worth spending a weekend or even longer there.

- lunglunghk (10/5): Impressive onsen experience - My husband and I visited this onsen ryokan for my birthday and we both enjoyed it massively. Located uphill while just a few minutes walk down to the town center and Yubatake. Staff are welcoming and attentive to details. The room is very cozy and spotless. The three onsens, which shifted between ladies and gentlemen at different time slots, are wonderful. The atmosphere and bathing facilities in the onsens are excellent. Dinner and breakfast are amazing which are served in a private room. We stayed there for two nights and all food are not repetitive. The meals are presented nicely which are just like pieces of arts and every item is undoubtedly tasty and fresh. The two nights stay here makes my birthday particularly memorable. We highly recommend you to this ryokan if you are planning to Kusatsu.

Building has traditional facade, but interior is very large with contemporary design. Our first floor room next to water garden was very nice. Dinner and breakfast were good and served in private dining rooms. Three public bathing areas rotate daily between male and female; water is quite hot and facilities are fairly simple; one pool outside and one or two inside. The onsen is a few-minute walk from the center of the town which is a destination itself and attracts a lot of Japanese and a few foreign tourists. The center is dominated by a large sulfur hot spring that has a list of notable Japanese visitors dating back to the 8th century. There is a good choice of restaurants and coffee shops and the local 7-11 and Lawson's have the bright colors on their signs blacked out to make them fit in with the traditional atmosphere. Interesting!
- richardchai (10/5): Wonderful onsen hotel - Me and my wife spent couple of nights at Kusatsu Onsen Boun in July 2019. The hotel is about 10 mins walk from the Kusatus bus terminal. If you are carrying luggage with you, you should call the hotel and they will send the shuttle bus to pick you up. Not suggest to walk to the hotel with luggage because there are some up and down slopes/hills. The hotel looks like having a refurbishment recently because the new wing of the hotel looks new and grand. But we stayed at the main building which is comparative old. The room and public bathroom are basic, but the onsen is wonderful. You should soak yourselves two or three times a day in the onsent and feel the total relaxation. The staff are very friendly. Although they speak very limited English, they would still try to assist and answer your enquiries. The food at the dinner is extravagent. You would be seated in a private room or cubical to enjoy the meal made of seasonal food. I give 5 stars because the wonderful onsen and the friendly services.

Initial we are not sure to choose half board or only breakfast. After reading different comments, we decided have a try of their dinner. We make the correct decision, not only their foods are good. There are not many eating places around the area. The room is spacious (approx 30m2) and is quite different from what stated on website (16 m2). The hotel located only few minutes walk from town centre and ~7 minute walk to bus terminal. However, walking slope up and down with your luggage is not easy. The hotel sent us to bus terminal on departure day and also second day when we went out. If you plan to stay there in the future, you many try contact hotel if they can provide pick up service. There are 3 onsen for hotel guests. The environment is clean and staff are nice. Simple English is ok.

- Hongkonglawyer (10/5): A wonderful visit - Wife and I have never visited Kusatsu before and we were looking for a nice onsen hotel in cold japan weather. This hotel was recommended to us by a friend and once I have booked the hotel, I never looked back on our experience that we were to find out during our stay. The hotel is located very near to the cillage centre of Kusatsu. Eateries also dotted around the vicinity of the hotel that offers high quality food, as one would expect nothing less when travelling in Japan. We stayed in a Japanese room in the main building. The room is very well maintained and we were taken to the room by a Japanese maid (must be in her late 60s) and patiently explained everything to us. Unfortunately, we can only guess what she was saying as she spoke to us in Japanese, which is a language that we are not familiar with. The staff at the front desk on the other hand were able to command English and they are all very helpful. We truly love the onsen and we made use of every chance to visit the onsen during our stay. The outdoor onsen is something that should not be missed at all costs. The Japanese is very strict about the check in and check out time. Their check in time is 2 pm and we arrived at 1:30 pm and had to wait until 2 pm before the room key toour room was handed to us. The breakfast, which was included in our room rate, was a feast. I will not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone who is travelling to this part of Japan. Best to travel to this destination when the weather is cold.

- G8330EDjohnr (6/5): NOT IMPRESSED - I am writing this review as I am staying. Once again dont believe everything trip advisor tells you. First of all dont even think about walking here from the bus station in the winter with luggage . Second of all I speak a lot of japanese and still had trouble here. If you speak no japanese you will have a problem communicating. Thirdly if you want an english style breakfast this isnt your place. We paid for the breakfast but didnt eat it. The problem with this ryokan is that it is too big to try to be a traditional ryokan. I have stayed at ryokans half this size that still had trappings of a traditional ryokan. The only thing I can say positive is that you are in walking distance of many restaurants and shops. The town of kusatsu is beautiful at night.

We booked 3 different rooms with different dinners in 3 separate bookings. As they did not realize we were a group, we had dinner in 3 rooms but one next to each other. We were arranged in one room for the breakfast the following day. Meal was good though not excellent. It impressed us most that a Cantonese (our mother tongue) speaking staff was arranged to serve our meal.It made us feel homed. Rooms were comfortable. We had a great deal with Expedia promotion. Staff also helped us to clean the snow of our car when we left. Location of the hotel is great too. It is within 3 mins walk to the town centre but on a small hill that you could be kept away from crowded area. Walking distance to most tourists attractions.

- danglobal1 (10/5): Great stay would recommend to friends - I read the reviews and decided that this would be the place. Our experience at this ryokan beat our expectations. I would recommend to friends. Notables: Stayed 2 nights (the right duration) Food - Delicious, large quantities (breakfast and dinner) Room - Comfortable (we actually doubled our futons for an even more comfortable sleep) Hot springs - 3 onsite, good quality Staff - Well trained, very attentive Location - Very convenient We took in the inn’s hot spring five times. On one of the days, we went to the town’s outdoor hot spring called Sainokawara. As it was an outdoor bath, we enjoyed an evening dip while seeing the stars and the moon. But quite honestly, I found the inn’s baths more relaxing since a big public bath is a bit too busy. Apart from the hot springs, we went hiking on both days. There are some walking paths not too far from the top off Sainokawara Park called 森の癒し歩道 (Mori no iyashi hodō), which is apparently also a cycling course although we didn’t see anyone cycling. Lastly, we took a bus directly from Tokyo Station to Kusatsu Onsen (10:10am departure with a 1:46pm arrival). It was very comfortable with one rest stop. This was better than taking 2 trains plus a bus and cheaper as well. There is also a direct bus from Shinjuku Station.

On the check out date, I got my car key back from one of their staff (they asked to keep it at the front). But we need to go out and buy something before leaving. When we got back, my car was parked in front of the hotel entrance and one of their staff (not the one who gave me back my car key) told me that I shouldn't park my car there. (I didn't notice when we went out because it's a rent car and I couldn't recognize it at a glance) I tried to explain that I wasn't the one who parked the car there but he didn't seem like who want to listen to my reason. And somehow I felt that he acted rudely to me. Anyway, all of their staffs beside him are great and I still enjoy my time their.

- Holly (10/5): Treated like royalty! - From the moment we were picked up at the bus station we were treated like royalty. We were treated to tea service in our room on arrival. The room was large and comfortable with a beautiful private traditional garden. We were given traditional clothing and sandals to wear to the bath. The bath was clean and well appointed with high end products to use afterwards. While at dinner in the old traditional part of town (a short, pleasant walk away), our room was transformed for sleeping. The traditional breakfast, served elegantly in our own private room, was icing on the cake. This was a not to be missed experience!

You can even book a room with your own personal hot spring if you like but the larger communal hot springs are great, and change each day so you can try them all during a one night stay. The staff were mostly very very efficient except for the meal scheduling where there was repeated confusion but everyone was quite friendly and eager to help. The food was not as good as I had expected at the price point unfortunately but the cleanliness, style and spaciousness of rooms and facilities are excellent and well worth the visit. We spoke Japanese so I don't know about English capabilities. Yukata/overcoat had size options and were nice and warm and tied easily and well.

- Kwok Wah (8/5): 有待改善，更加進步 - The first room they provide is small and no view, also close to the kitchen. It is too poor. After complaint to the person in charge, they change a bigger and good view room to us. The room is good. Overall the service is good, nice hotel. The dinner is not bad, a lot of different dishes, nice in presentation, but honest said that the food is too traditional Japanese type, and not very good taste. My own comment, no choice on the food, you have to eat what they provided, good or bad.
- kwanmingw2015 (10/5): Excellent hospitality and experience - This was our first trip to an Onsen with my family. We had two rooms, one Deluxe and one Standard. Although both are very clean and tidy, but the Deluxe was worth the extra. The Deluxe room had our own private Onsen tub, so you can enjoy a dip in your own privacy. The food was very good and they made extra effort to accommodate one vegetarian in my family. Staff was very friend and considerate. They picked us up and dropped us off at the Express Bus Terminal. The staff also spoken reasonable English to communicate with us. This Onsen is sort of like a small hotel that is more like a family run business. So it was definitely more traditional and friendly. Although there are large hotels, I would recommend this especially if it is your first Onsen vacation and looking for an unforgettable experience.

- Jo (10/5): Beautiful hotel and excellent staff - Had an excellent 2 nights stay at boun. We arrived late at around 6:30pm from shinjuku ( almost 5 hours by bus from bus terminal). We emailed the hotel to come pick us up and it was done, luckily we did so because it was quite dark and cold. Arrival: We arrived and was greeted warmly by hotel staff and promptly following they served dinner in our room. The hotel is very well kept and looked very new. Meals: The meals were excellent with a great variety in food served. We’ve stayed at many onsen ryokan within Japan and this is one of the good ones. 2 night stay with totally different themed dinner menu. Onsens: There are 3 onsens and they alternate between male and female according to the time frame. All 3 of the onsens have a small outdoor onsen that is accessed from indoor onsen. The onsens are clean and pretty spacious and not overcrowded as the hotel is relatively small and cozy. The source of the hot spring is very good for relieving muscle tension and has very little smell. Surrounding: Very close to the centre of the town but not over touristy as noun is located a little higher with a small walk upwards to get to hotel. Overall: We were very happy to have stayed at boun with their great staff and the high level of cleanliness. We truly had a relaxing and comforting stay and were fed stuffed full. We appreciate the size of this ryokan as the noise levels are low and the onsens are rarely crowded Excellent overall!!
