Guest Reviews
- Marylee (10/5): - The hotel is historic and previously was military officers housing. It sits near a beautiful park and with an easy walkable incline. Highly recommend this hotel when staying in St. Gallen, Switzerland.
- tonysW3640KW (8/5): Hotel with character - This hotel as character , it as an old feel to it , rooms are big with wooden floors , good shower , and it might not appeal to everyone but I like it and I loved how breakfast was served and it had a nice European cafe style feel . It’s a good 10 minute walk from station easy to find and would recommend this hotel.
- Martin (8/5): - Vackra rum. Enkelt inredda med retromöbler. Sköna sängar. Fin restaurang med god frukost.
- Rafal (10/5): - Duży parking cysty pokój i lazienka
- patpatuk (10/5): Simplicity, authenticity and hospitality - The beautiful historical hotel is a ten minutes walk from the station. The big green park outside is a sportsground but also has many benches. The hotel/restaurant terrace is lined with magnificent old chestnut trees. Friendly welcome, fast check-in and check-out.
Our room on 3rd floor was big and spacious with few selected furniture and a water caraffe with glasses which can be filled with drinkable tap water. The only digital device in the room is an ipad. Pure sustainable.
Taking the staircase down to the restaurant instead of the lift, we were surprised by an intriguing art exhibition.
If you‘re into culture, sustainability and social responsibility, you will feel at home at this place.
- Lissen Collatz (10/5): - Fantastisk og ekstraordinært sted! Gode parkeringsforhold og tæt på offentlig trafik. Æstetiske og smukke værelser. Dejlig restaurant!
Merci
- Marisa (8/5): Komme wieder! - Wunderschöne und stilvolle Zimmer, äusserst nettes Personal!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Gutes Hotel - Hotel mit viel Charme, sehr bequeme Betten, knarrende Böden, riesen Zimmer und engagiertes ,freundliches Personal
- griangraf2001 (10/5): Excellent family stay in St Gallen - We stayed in a family room for 5 nights and really enjoyed our stay. The rooms are uncluttered and pristine, the beds comfy. There is no tv, no tea/coffee and no desk, which some people may miss, but the room and bathroom are perfect and rates very reasonable for Switzerland.
Breakfast was good - the staff were very friendly and catered well for one of our kids who is dairy intolerant. We had afternoon tea and dinner during our stay and both also very good.
The hotel is in a really nice park which has a playground for the kids, and the hotel itself has table tennis and other outside games for the family to enjoy.
Location is great - just a 10 min easy walk from the main train station and city centre.
We will definitely stay again.
- pb2980 (6/5): Peculiar , not a business hotel - A parking area is available for guests. The small and atypical hotel is very close to a green park good for a walk /run. There is an area to stay outside for a drink in the good season; restaurant , bar and this exterior are shared with people not guest if the hotel. Room are simple and neat, quite basic and old in their forniture. I had no desk , chair and tv in my room, but they offer I pad at the reception and there is a Bose sound system in the room. I took a salad for dinner, maybe too dressed but good; with two glasses of wine about 42chf. The reception is a desk within the restaurant/bar
- Jennifer (10/5): - The staff is very friendly and accommodating, and the restaurant/bar is very good.
- Mikhail (8/5): - Very clean, large room, comfortable bed.
No TV, fridge or coffee facilities in the room.
- Jan (8/5): Great hotel, would be better with tables - Room 21 has an amazing view over St Gallen.
All rooms could be improved by providing some sort of table.
- Scuba_Stevie78 (10/5): Building with history, operated by young lovely team - This location was in the past an military canteen. Has been refurbished to an hotel with resto. A young Managment Team is in lead now and have been created a lovely place. Menucard is mainly with some seasonal dishes. We spent there some good hours and will recommend this place.
- Silvia (10/5): Sensationell - Von A - Z Personal, Essen, Zimmer es stimmt einfach ALLES.
- santiagomizb (8/5): Good Option for Business Travel - I stayed 2 nights for business in St Gallen. It´s close to main train station, close the center and I you have some free time after working you can go for walk to the nice park or to the relevant places to visit. The food is excellent in the restaurant. I was there on December so under -10 celsius but inside of the hotel all the places had a perfect temperature.
Guter Kaffee.
- CB969696 (8/5): Something different in Switzerland - Stayed at Militaerkantine for 2 nights in December while in St Gallen for a conference.
It's an interesting little place. Quirky, but comfortable and unpretentious. The whole hotel is rather basic and minimalist, with the bar and restaurant (canteen) forming the heart of the place. The decor is somewhat austere, and while all that might not sound very inviting, the place works well and is surprisingly cosy. It's nice to come back to after a day out in the cold.
Food in the restaurant was good and had a "homemade" feel. Staff were attentive and helpful.
Rooms are large with wooden floors and a large comfortable bed. Again, very basic, but practical.
I think it's down to personal taste, but I liked it for it's unusual features and all round good vibe. More fun than a Holiday Inn.
- 308milenas (8/5): Good food, nice ambient - In a building from 1902, there is a hotel and restaurant. The restaurant is very good, with a small menu that changes daily... so everyday you have 2 soups, 2 salads, 4 main courses and 2 deserts to choose from.
I had a delicious deer meat with mushroom sauce, grilled pumpkins and grating potatoes. My friends also took vermiceles for desert and it was great!
The restaurant opens every day and have flexible serving times (for those who live in Switzerland or struggle without finding a place to eat after 2pm or in Sundays, this is a blessing).
Recommended!!
- ranti23 (10/5): Great food, nice setting - This is about the restaurant, not the hotel: Went there with a rather big party of people for business lunch and I liked the quality of the food, the service, and the whole outdoor setting very much. Also rather good value for money IMO.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - The Hotel is clearly to expensive for the accommodation received
The family room is clearly overrated since the kids have to sleep in a walking closet
Be aware that you pay additional 15 sFr for the parking
Rooms facing the street are incredibly noisy
- 262Laura60 (10/5): Excellent - A special place, with big airy rooms and cute, quaint bathrooms. Breakfast is excellent and dinner was very good too. The menu is small but varied and with some special dishes. The staff is really very welcoming and accommodating.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Wir kommen wieder :-) - Wir kommen wieder :-)
- 192ingeh (6/5): Great food but tiny portions - Great food but tiny portions. We (7) went there for afterwork and five of us ordered the same food. They brought six plates and a bowl and made us share. Very small portions for 22 chf pp. Friendly service.
- RickBlane (6/5): Very basic - The room was clean. It did not include breakfast. The rooms were bottom line very basic as in no TV with minimalist amenities. Other opinions used the word austere to describe this hotel, I say it was bare with little furniture and no decoration in the halls it looks like an army barricks. With a little TLC this could be a fantastic boutique hotel
- bearthewonderdog (10/5): Beautiful hipster styling and doggy friendly - We had an amazing 1 night at this place with our 2 doggies. The hotel is beautifully styled with retro up-cycled stuff, clean and lovely friendly staff. A little out of town (about 2k walk) but next to a lovely park, and easy parking. Breakfast was simple (Bircher muesli, omlettes, croissants) but yummy. Loved the soap which is they same shape at the hotel. Would definitely stay again.
- Y8231BRalexm (10/5): fantastic place - You need to stay in St Gallen and want to experience the location? Stay at this hotel! The hotel is totally renovated and you will have a good opportunity to explore the city from this place. The service is extraordinary!
- 718maysai (10/5): Great experience - The room is spacious and austere (we can feel that you are in a military service). The bathroom is totally renovated, very good. The room doesn't have a minibar which can be an issue when you travel with a baby; however, the hotel dealt very well by storing the baby food to us. And also when we asked them to warm it up, they used the oven instead a microwave (for me as a mother this is outstanding). They received our dog extremely well, when we arrived he had water, a snack and a mattress. The restaurant is very good, the food was very tasty and nice portion (not a swiss style). Last but not least, the staff was very friendly. Very nice stay.
- lorenzovelvet (10/5): Military Quarters with a Brooklyn Vibe - This former military quarters is now a charming hotel and restaurant. My room was drenched in sunlight and breathtaking panoramic views of St.Gallen. The room decor was modern with a minimalist twist. The hotel staff were extremely friendly and attentive. The restaurant is big and airy with plenty of outdoor space allowing one to take in the fresh St.Gallen air and mind clearing views while indulging on fresh and delicious food. The hotel is a short walk from the city center which allows for a peaceful stay. This hotel and restaurant is the perfect place to stay when visiting St.Gallen. I highly recommend you check it out.
- o86 (8/5): Upscale dormitory from the 19th century - The house was build to be used as barracks for officers, so there are broad corridors and simple rooms. Personal bathrooms were not included in the original design, and were added just recently to every room, which sometimes led the room to look like from the IKEA catalogue, the page where they describe solutions for very small spaces. Still, the atmosphere is actually very nice and interesting, the rooms are spacious (I guess several officers used to share one), with simple Scandinavian designer furniture (not from IKEA :-)).
Dogs are welcome, for the (mandatory) fee of 15 francs per night they are equipped with a bowl and a blanket to sleep on. There is a nice park outside with a dog-friendly area.
