Guest Reviews
- Lisa (8/5): - The carpeted stairs heading up to the rooms made me nervous. I thought they represented what the rest of the space might look like. Thankfully, the room (room c) was clean and spacious. Really nice unit.
My only recommendation for the owner is to replace that carpeting.
Suggestions to other guests...I would bring my sleep mask next time as the skylights make the room bright early in morning.
- Matthew (4/5): - The people running the house seem nice and unobtrusive. As it is an older house I can excuse the wear and tear of the property, but if guests can’t dispose of toilet paper without clogging the toilet. Then that’s a basic human necessity that needs to be addressed.
- Marilyn (10/5): - Room is clean. Bathroom is big.Shopping close by. Location is perfect
- Mithell (2/5): - Reeked of THC. Sign in bathroom, cant flush toilet paper! Key left in door for anyone to enter. Owners will not get back re: complaints, just take money even though we did not stay there! Will not accept refund.
- Alex (8/5): - Nce stay despite the location. Check-in was problematic, as the owners never got the information about my reservation, but they honored it and upgraded me to a better room. Close to many things, but very urban.
- Ragi (2/5): - The air conditioning was so loud,
I couldn't get in the facility because I didn't know the passcode of the gate, we had to wait until some one get out to tell us the code.
We tried to call, No one answer,
We didn't know where is our room
We gussed one by luck
Will not use it again
- Mathieu (4/5): - It's merit is that it's not super noisy area, the room was big, access with code was clear and we were autonomous, bedroom was clean, and it's cheap.
The downsides:
- only one night stand. Bed super hard.
- only one cheap quality towel per person
- pierced curtains
- sharing a bathroom is ok, but the bathroom itself was dirty. No door for the toilets, spiders in the shower, calking getting away in the shower, paint falling because there's too much humidity, marks, toilet does not accept toilet paper for some reason so there's a basket on it's side to throw toilet paper, curtain in front of the door is not full height... it wasn't a pleasant experience. At least, no issues with the water temperature nor the pressure.
I would consider this stay ok for someone always outside and who wants to stay on a budget. But be warned about the bathroom and the spartian state of the room.
- Kaersten (6/5): - The host was warm and welcoming. The location is great, and although our room was on the lower level right off of the sidewalk we felt safe. The room was basic so bring all of the little extras that you might need: soap, tea kettle, glasses, etc. The bed was very comfortable.
- Marcos abel (10/5): - Decent space for the time i needed it for. thank you
- Alexandre (10/5): - The owners and nice, great persons. Generous, they helped me a lot. Offered me an additional night under certain needs, mailed me belongings I've forgotten here. Allen is very sweet.
- Arnaud (10/5): - Nice
- Morgan (6/5): What it says on the tin; inexpensive and no-frills - When I think of hotel "star" rating, I think of it reflecting the relative cost-to-quality metric you expect. Five star hotels being the sort where the hotel itself is a destination of itself and worth the supreme cost, four-star is added luxuries that aren't necessary (like spa and pool amenities, etc) but can be nice for the added cost. Three star is the baseline sort of Quality Inn or Comfort Inn style; clean, secure, private, only a few frills.
In that regard, Taigh Ice fits to me as a two-star experience, which is also exactly what I wanted. More akin to a hostel or motel, where the price is cheaper than other choices locally, but with less luxuries. And so I'm content in my stay.
Pros:
- Big, private room
- Full shared kitchen for use (bring your own utensils to cook with, though)
- Great location
- Very well air conditioned in the heat
- Other guests were quiet. I slept well!
- Friendly staff
Cons:
- Bathroom was untidy / borderline gross. Big cobwebs, hair wad in shower drain, etc.
- No hand towel in bathroom. Floor was often wet.
Notes:
- You will be asked to throw out toilet paper in a garbage can instead of flushing it; this is very common in parts of Asia, but not in North America. I was familiar with the practice, but my guest found it very gross.
- I had some uncertainty of where to park, and so asked the staff. It never turned into a problem for us, but they were somewhat slow to respond, so I can imagine might be stressful if there was an emergency.
- chris (4/5): - This place is a mess wirh lots of yelling and screaming.
- Wahab (10/5): - Nice
- Nicole (4/5): - The property/rowhouse is located in a neighborhood that has high drug activity. There was no instructions about how to check in ie: no lockbox code given prior to arrival. I was lucky someone was nearby that let us in. Upon arrival the person didn’t know which room I booked. Smells horrible and looks like a rooming house. I would never stay there alone
- Victoria (4/5): - Could not use the bathroom in my room, no water running.
- Megan (8/5): - The staff and family who live at the premises were very lovely and accommodating . But it was a bit further from the city centre then we thought.
- anthony (10/5): - Upgraded me to a great room with huge bathroom. Very nice owner.
- Miriam (2/5): - Rooms need decorating and new beds and bed sheets and bathroom
- Carole (10/5): - Felt safe
- Arthur (8/5): It was okay - Beds were comfy, room was spacious and relatively clean. I was worried after reading some reviews but it was not bad. I would stay here again, as the price was good. The water pressure was fine, but both of the sinks were a bit clogged and I had to unclog them myself.
- Chantal (2/5): - Everything about it was a dump (area, walls, carpet, floor, gross bathroom, no exhaust fan, the smell) pictures are false advertising. I was expecting a charming place with a microwave at the very least. No microwave to heat the premade breakfast I had made and dirty beyond belief. I have video and pictures to prove it. False advertising
- Wyatt (10/5): - Affordable and comfortable
- Claire (4/5): - Lock on door was sketchy. Not enough towels. Not properly cleaned.
- Devon (8/5): - Good.
- Daniel (6/5): - The listing for this place is just like a Tinder profile—great angles and plenty of filters. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for, so don’t be surprised by below-average amenities. However, if you're on a tight budget and want to be fairly close to downtown, this place is as good as it gets. I’d avoid the common kitchen area unless you don’t mind bugs.
- Ryan (10/5): - This place had a very homely feeling and charm. I absolutely loved it. I would absolutely stay here again.
- Akhniet (10/5): - Cool
- Dave (10/5): - Good service, comfortable bed! No interruptions for someone in need of a couple quiets nights on a busy weekend!
- Douglas (10/5): does the job - Not exactly high end but totally adequate. We stayed one night and it was fine, no problems, nice people.
- Amy (2/5): - We got to the property and it looked nothing like the photos. Paint was chipping, lights were burnt out, doors were browning, there was mold in the bathroom and we overall felt very unsafe to the point that we switched to a different hotel that luckily had vacancy.
- Jamie (4/5): - Very dirty. Very run down. Location was fine but there was dirt on the walls, lime in the shower, and the white carpets were brown from not being cleaned.
- Laurence (10/5): - On était dans l'appartement en haut. Lits très confortables, draps très doux. Attention, c'est un studio, pas de chambre fermées! Mais vraiment chouette et propre. Facilité de communiquer avec l'hôte. Épicerie en face.
- Parker (6/5): - The property is well-situated and within walking distance of anything you might need, including many public transit stops. The room was minimal, but all that I needed for my purposes. The bathroom has clearly been renovated, with a large tub, double-headed shower, and double sink. However, there were many small things in the room and the bathroom that could have done with repair/maintenance. The only thing that affected the quality of my stay, though, was that it was unclear if the bathroom had been cleaned before my stay (hair in the sink, dirt in the tub)
I emailed the property through their website's contact information 24h in advance of my check-in (and then the day-of check-in through the Expedia app) after not receiving information about how to check-in/gain access to the property. However, I did not receive a response, and ended up calling the property after arrival to sort things out. While they called me back promptly to provide this information, it was an additional stressor during my trip that could have been avoided with an automated email. Additionally, while the property description lists parking as being available, there was not any parking available and the staff was not helpful in directing me to available overnight parking lots (though I was able to find one on my own a couple of blocks away). Again, additional stress that could have been prevented if I had more information in advance.
- Kate (8/5): - I think the reason why there are so mixed reviews is because your experience depends on what room you get. We got the biggest room on the third floor which was pretty much a mini apartment. It was very nice. It seems like the other rooms though are basically just a bed and then a communal bathroom and kitchen so I could see things going wrong there.
- Tenzin (2/5): - This property is terrible
- Maria (10/5): - Overall this was a really nice house to stay at overnight. My friends and I went to explore the night life in Toronto and stayed here. Owners family was super friendly and welcoming there’s nothing bad to say. Good for 1 night with friends if you just need a place to stay in. Pretty spacious rooms as well.
- Amanda (4/5): - The room only had a bed and a desk with two very small towels. The bathroom wasn’t very clean and the house smelt musty. The hosts were nice but for $50 more you can get a room at the Hilton.
- Bharatee (2/5): - Very poor and not at all like the pictures
- Luis Enrique (10/5): - The owner of the house was really nice and she left us do an early check in.
- Nelly (4/5): - The room I got doesn’t look at all like the one I reserved online, the one online is inviting and clean, the one I was given is dingy, very depressing and there’s no closet to hang your clothes,no night tables,it doesn’t have individual soap and shampoo, only big bottles that look like have been around for a while and everybody has used,,no plastic cups for personal use .Paid way too much for what I got .
- Keanna (10/5): - Nice place and nearby restaurants. The room was clean and the owner was accommodating. I would definitely go back
- William (10/5): - The family who ran this rental were very friendly, flexible and kind.
- Kailey (6/5): - Very ok not great
- Caitlin (10/5): - Cute clean room with a gorgeous shower in the ensuite! Great places nearby. Would definitely stay again
- Gregory (6/5): - The room did not look exactly like in the photos on the page. The photos make it look like a boutique hotel but it is more like a boardering home. The shared bathroom was the only truly precarious thing. It appeared to be in a mid-state of renovation and is located right next to the shared kitchen area.
- jai (10/5): - Great experience here, lovely owner she let us have the parking free of charge and also aloud us to leave our car parked out back for a little after check out. Would stay again
- Nathaniel (4/5): - Plenty of insects and room is not as described
- YI (2/5): - Service to bad
- Francois (2/5): - No Air conditioning as advertised so it was hot and all their rooms didn’t have their AC unit, you are warned if you need this to sleep well. The room doesn’t look like the pictures. I’m surprised Hotel.com showed this on their website, It is FAR from the quality of an hotel room. The shower could be great but they obviously stop cleaning it for a while, you can see a lot of mold and dirt in it. The walls and doors look dirty and need a paint job. Would not recommend, it shouldn't even worth 80$/night by the lack of maintenance.
- Mitchell (10/5): - I've seen a lot of not so great reviews for this place, but my experience exceeded my expectations. I was upgraded to the largest room they had at no expense, the host was very easy to reach and the bed was very comfortable.
The only criticism I would have is that the room/kitchen could have used a bit of extra TLC, but it was by no means "dirty". This is not going to be the fairmont, but for the price it was a very good stay.
- Sadegh (6/5): - Totally, it was so-so for me!
- Carlos (10/5): - Staff was responsive and very accommodating of late check in (via phone). Room is clean. Fully equipped kitchen available for common use.
- Adity (2/5): - My partner and I booked a room at this place looking at the pictures posted but it was in a much worse condition inside and out! The neighbourhood was filled with sketchy people especially the neighbours. We decided to move out that very night. The owners stopped responding to messages and calls as welll! Very disappointed. Also got charged more after we informed were checking out early!
- Veronika (6/5): - All good
- Arnulfo (2/5): - No pudimos ingresar y nos cobraron la reserva completa.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - we got the suite and jt was great ! had our own bathroom and kitchen !
- Verified traveler (8/5): - My room was nice & clean. Quiet area. No complaints.
- VenzV (2/5): - My experience with booking this hotel was a terrible one! After waiting for an hour at the front door, staying in the dark, calling the hotel phone number that was busy ALL the time - I was attended by anyone. No-one answered the door! I had to return back to the bus terminal and return to Ottawa. My booking of this hotel was a fake and dishonest, hope Expedia.ca to reimburse me for the sham!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The owner is most accomodating and eager to please.
- Gabby (10/5): - Cozy antiques with modern washroom. Affordable prices were greatly appreciated.
- Cameron (8/5): Hit and miss - Very clean, spacious and comfortable room. Not the best location, but the price and other amenities make up for it.
I also experienced a leak of water through the ceiling during my stay - it was a heavy downpour both outside and inside the room. If it wasn’t for the ceiling leak, the rating would be higher.
The staff (dealt with by text and over the phone) was also very pleasant. Thanks.
- Fan-ExpoTourist (8/5): - Similar to an Air BnB. We rented the top loft level of an old house. Renovated to a modern theme.
High ceiling, two skylights, one common open space with two distinct sleeping areas separated by the knee walls from centrally located stairwell. Worked well for my buddy and i. Could accommodate two adults and two kids. 2 Queen beds.
Unit includes a small but fully functional kitchen with range and full sized fridge.
Bathroom is decent size, walk-in shower. No exhaust fan.
There's access to a rooftop deck from the kitchen, good for smokers however, the deck is gone so you can jump through the door to the rooftop below. (No railings) Funny. Don't go out if you're drunk!
There are two parking spots behind house. Can be hard to the find the laneway at first.
10min walk to Wellington St. Subway. Quiet neighbourhood.
Considering we just needed a place for two nights to attend Fan-Expo, it was a good stay and we could just leave the car parked the whole time.
As far as communication, which some previous posts mentioned, calling the landlorda cell was the best option.
When you arrive, you meet on site (give a headsup to timing) and you receive your room key and door codes.
I would stay again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Interesting concept for a hotel. I liked its location, the room itself was very large and stylish and the bed was so so comfy. There was a mirror and a lamp in the room and plugs were easily accessible. Shades blocked out the light well. Only thing I didn’t like was the bathroom looked like it needed a little fixing up, like the toilet paper holder, as well as there was no hand towel or anything to dry your hands on. That is the only negative I can find.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The staff made a mistake and accidentally gave me an upgraded room, so I was happy.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Liked the old building and character, location was ok, close to lots of restaurants
The room door was textured glass that let in lots of light and sound, no air conditioning, only 2 towels (no face cloth or hand towels), toiletries were a large open body of body wash and shampoo (we didn’t use)
Parking was a nightmare! Tried to ask the woman in charge but between her accent and lack of direction had to go back a second time to clarify. It was a public lot that we had to ask multiple people about paying and were worried we would get towed when told it was free. Luckily we didn’t.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Comfortable quite room - It was not clear to me that this was sort of a Air B&B arrangement when I made the reservation (no personnel at site; call a number, they provide access to the building and you are done!) But beyond that, the room was as described, it was clean, comfortable, WiFi was excellent. It was an affordable and suitable accommodation for a few nights in downtown Toronto.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - It was super cold inside the room. Not so clean. There was only one broken chair in the room. Small toilet.
- Tony (8/5): - Unique neighborhood...liked local restaurants. Friendly business owners. Located in Cabbagetown area. Lots of history in this area of town.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Little confusion when I arrived and couldn’t get in
But room was excellent and very clean
More like a home and central for sightseeing
- Verified traveler (8/5): - I was pleasantly surprised by our stay, the inside exceeded my expectations significantly! I would highly recommend others stay here.
- Bev (8/5): - Located on a residential street, with a grocery store nearby, and good proximity to public transit. Our room was very comfortable and bright. But it was up two very steep flights of steps.
- Maggie (8/5): - I was anxious about check-in because I felt I should have got a message with the enter code within 24 hours of my booking, as there is no staff on site. I had to send a message asking for the information 48 hours after I had booked and I didn't receive an answer until shortly before I was due to leave for Toronto. Apart from that, most things worked well.
The room was pleasantly large and had an attractive feeling, the shower was superior, the bed was comfortable and the desk had a good light.
Two small problems--there was no glass or cup in my room and no conditioner, so I wasn't able to wash my hair. I will book again, but I'll need to remember to pack both.
- Sheikh (10/5): - Very spacious, clean rooms. Nice decor. Quiet. Friendly and helpful staff and responded to all questions in a timely manner.
- Ying (6/5): Ginger - Overall is good, the only thing is shower water not warm enough even I put the hottest side. Cold for me in Toronto weather
- Matthew (4/5): - Room was big and one bed was comfy, that was the extent of the positives it seemed.
Very quickly we found we could not use the closets for their intended purpous, being used as storage for tables and various items that would not be used by the room.
The ac was very loud, and room still rather warm for the most part of the time we spent there. Which was not long.
The bathroom still had a toilet brush in the toilet when we arrived, had to muscle your way into the shower. The vanity had one cupboard that would not close all the way either.
Found a lot of dust and hair under the small eating table and there was splashes of something up the wall that looked to not be cleaned in a while.
The beds didnt match either being two completely different mattresses. And a random couch was flipped on the deck outside.
Lastly we decided to get a freezer pizza to use the oven available to us, only to find that turning on the oven blew the fuze, which i would only assume is due to the outdated oven.
In total darkness we turned it back on to find we could not cook the pizza without turnung lights off or the ac off, we could not use the oven ac and lights at the same time without having to unplug something.
At that point i attempted to get into contact with the staff to find no one to help and untimatly left to a different location for the night last minute due to how unbearable this location was.
Not worth 220 dollars. I cannot see the justification. Id add more if i could.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Private, clean and comfortable room. Amenities (bathroom, shower, kitchen) are shared. Run by a delightful family who were available to answer questions. This isn't a hotel so there isn't a concierge, however once we got in touch with the owner, we were provided with everything we needed to check in.
Neighbourhood is quiet and parking available if necessary. Be sure to ask the owner about it.
- Khy (10/5): - The host was the sweetest ever! House was extremely cozy and clean.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Shower was directly in the bedroom, other guests were loud, no amenities, and unfavourable neighbourhood. Forced to pay for parking although not stated in the reservation. Way too much money for this small space. Won’t be back.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - It was avarage. Only one washroom is not ideal for the amount of guests staying there.
- ffff (6/5): - it was ok, the location not really close to the subway.
An employee not well english speaker and prepare repeat yourself.
The main door has a big from the floor and everybody whoever going to upstairs will hear and see you inside.
- Jan willem (10/5): - Excellent service, small, but very tidy rooms, owner was very accommodating to our requests, cheap parking, great value! Will definitely stay again next time.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good Location - Pretty great location for the price. Had a full apartment which would be nice for longer stays.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The rooms are spacious, quaint, quiet and priced right with a TTC stop right across the street.
The shared kitchen facilities were fully equipped and accessible at all times.
I will be rebooking with Elevate Rooms Taigh Ice in the future.
- Aldo Jesus (4/5): Not as advertised - Be careful with this place. They advertise A/C but they dont have any. Also the place is not clean at all, there are spiders in the ceiling, there's not enough light in the room and the walls are thin. Please save yourself a bad experience.
- Robert (8/5): - Nice place. Only complaint was that there were no televisions
- Gary (2/5): Never again at this place - We stayed on May 24th 2018. First of all the door to the room is a french door and not a solid door so when my husband was in the shower you can see the shape and it's not very private. Then the girl from the hotel came to our room asking us to pay our room in cash, we responded that we had already paid with a credit card , she then called the owner which we talked to, she also insisted that we pay cash or email money transfer because she said she did not have a credit card machine, we told her that we already had paid.. Later we are sleeping the lights are out and the girl comes back and knocks on the door even though the room was dark. She ask me if I could drive to an ATM machine to get cash At this point my husband said call Hotels.com and deal with them. I do not think that this is a very good experience that the owner is very demanding that the customer should pay in cash and I think that you should think twice before booking a room at this place . Also a lot of mold around the shower in the bedroom. When we came home the next day the amount of the room had been charge on our credit card. What is going on here????? Bad experience. Never again
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very convenient location. Ample room space. Cute, simple decor
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very good hotel.
If there were more towels of different sizes that would be perfect.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Clean, comfortable and spacious. Enjoyed my stay!
- Elizabeth (10/5): - Enjoy my stay and people work here are friendly
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Rooms are nice but not very well insulated or private with rest of hotel. Was disappointed with incredibly poor water pressure in bathroom, cold and no pressure at all.
- Mark "fly guy" (6/5): overnight stay in Toronto - If you are budget conscious and don't mind being a bit "east of Yonge St." then this may be ok for a brief overnight stay. It's a bit challenging to notice it as it is among a large group of old row houses. No TV either. Internet is fine though so you can stream your Netflix as desired! Not somewhere I would stay for more than a night perhaps two maximum for a "clean, fairly comfortable crash pad".
- Verified traveler (8/5): Great stay. - Located close to where I wanted to go. Room was clean. Shower cabinet in bedroom was a bit unique. Hostess "Ice" was very helpful.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Not a hotel - This is a guest house. Worst thing was that my door had opaque glass and hallway light would not allow me to sleep.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Nobody there to check you in. You have to call a number several times, nobody to help you. They say that there is parking but they don't tell you that they charge you for it. They are very inflexible and unhelpful. The room is ok, location is mediocre, bathroom is bad. Not worth the price.
- Rae (6/5): Disappointed - Did not accept the credit card I used with Expedia to book. I found out they required cash while en route on the day of arrival.
Room badly needed dusting. Black "skid marks" marks on the walls. Nice shower but stains in corners and glass had smears. 2 sinks but only one with hot water. Hot water took a long time to arrive. Shower water ended before I finished rinsing and it was not a long shower. No water glass. I was Offered use of a shared kitchen on Day 2. The only staff person I met was very nice and welcoming.
This is not a hotel nor a B&B.
- Dean (8/5): Good value room, location let down - Good value for money, could use a clean in the bathroom and the general area isn’t somewhere you want to walk at night
