Guest Reviews
- Thomas (10/5): - They did a great job renovating the Tar Heel motel. Clean, comfortable rooms. Bring K-cups with you if you are a big coffee drinker and don’t pack heavy. This is the best of old school Outer Banks, reminds me of when my parents would take us to OBX in the 70’s staying at the Beacon.
- Mark (6/5): - Had a water leak, small room, not awful for what we paid.
- Chad (6/5): Just ok - Check in was a breeze. Room was clean. A/c did not work very well (Not cool enough). Fridge did not keep my items cool, even after turning up the temp. Overall ok, but the A/c and fridge are important items that need to be updated to make stay more comfortable.
- Priscilla (8/5): - It's the perfect place for a short trip to the beach!
- James (10/5): - Nice place and affordable
- william (8/5): - ..
- John (8/5): - Our got to cheap, clean motel
- Gunther (6/5): - It's very close to the beach, it is clean. The room as well as the bathroom is very tinny if you are a bigger person you will hate the shower as well as the small space where the toilette is. The staff will empty your trash and replace the towels, but that's as far as it goes. Parking is in front of the room, if you have a full-size pickup or SUV........ but overall ok and clean.
- Les (10/5): - Clean and quiet property. Walking distance to several restaurants and a short drive to others. Easy beech access and close to Jeanette's pier.
- Troy (6/5): - It is an old updated clean motel. Walls are very thin so outside noise is a problem. Fine for a night or two
- Jessica (10/5): - Thank you for such great accommodations and service.
- Marcela (10/5): - Excellent stay. Cute beachy motel. Located within a safe area. Very clean. Quiet. Parking was available but limited. Check in was easy via a keypad. If we did have our baby with us, a pack n play probably wouldn’t have fit in the room- heads up to other parents with young ones. Would recommend this place to others.
- Kevin (10/5): - .
- Phyllis (10/5): - The grass outside had spurs. Not great for dog.
The TV didn’t eork
- Travis (10/5): Weekend getaway - Great little place for a weekend getaway that did not break the bank. Room was very clean with solid amenities. Really enjoyed the boutique hotel experience the Tar Heel offered.
- Mia J. (10/5): Fantastic location and beautiful rooms! - The owners have taken an old motel and turned it into beautiful beach style rooms with an excellent location. There are no dirty corners. Go to Sam and Omi’s for food, because it’s the best. The only recommendations I would make is for the owners to provide a plunger because it’s on septic and a flyswatter because it’s by the beach. Thank you! We will be back.
- Patrick (8/5): - Not a luxury motel, but serviceable. Would stay there again.
- Cody (10/5): - Very cute, up to date, easily accessible, and very affordable
- PRESTON (10/5): - clean
- Laura (10/5): Pleasant - Our stay was pleasant. Comfortable room and quiet area. The bath tub plug was rusted, couldnt close it. No hair dryer. We would stay again.
- Jason (10/5): - Awesome spot. Convenient and fit our needs
- Amanda (8/5): Nice hotel, needs better pillows - Great! The air conditioning should not shut off constantly and the pillows are very cheap and not comfortable at all but otherwise it was great!
- DIANE (10/5): Great little beach spot! - Excellent location! Great price and adequate comfort.
- Lynn (10/5): - Great weekend getaway with the girls!
- Lorraine (8/5): - The room was very nice and clean. Decorated very nice. It is a great place to stay for a night. Pets are welcome. You dont see as any staff because you just check in and out with a code on your door. The beach is a walk across the street. There is a great! restaurant on the premises. We enjoyed dinner and breakfast there with very reasonable prices. When I walked my dog the grass is long and fire ants are there. The wall air conditioner is loud. But all in all like I said great for a night then on to the rental home we got in Kill devil.
- Kevin (10/5): - Great value with very close access to the beach! Clean room. Well-managed facility!
- Denlin (10/5): - Great stay, great location!
- Tracy (10/5): - Cute room with a 2 chair table for eating and plenty of space in the room.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - No Wi-Fi. Overpriced.
- Thomas (10/5): - The hotel is a classic style reminiscent of the 50s and 60s yet it has amenities such as microwave, toaster oven, keurig coffee maker, and mini fridge. The only problem was that the wi-fi was never available. The receptionist said that they had called for repair but it never happened in our 3 night stay. I would gladly stay here again.
- Rahim (8/5): - It was a normal motel room, nothing fancy. I liked the small fridge, microwave oven, and toaster oven.
The service was so so. When they would come, they would forget to replenish soap, toilet role, shampoo, and coffee etc.
The shower had some glue type marks, and they did not go away.
The airconditioner water left a unlighly mark outside.
- Steven (8/5): - Given it is a Motel, they did good. I had several “must haves” and they ticked the boxes. Within Nags Head, dog friendly without conditions, near the beach, a nice pool, reasonable cost. There is a neighboring restaurant The Dunes that we used a few times but check their hours, not always open. The staff were a little intimidated by our two large dogs but still smiled and vacuumed up our mutts dog hair without complaint. So would i book Tar Heel again, yes.
- Jeff (8/5): - Nice place.
- Marie-France (8/5): - Simple mais propre très petit
- Brent (10/5): - Well maintained older hotel. Retro style feeling. In pretty good condition to be an older property.
- Julianna (10/5): - Very clean and great location.
- George (10/5): - Bathroom is tiny. Parking is interesting. You park “right” outside your door , or within a few feet of it. Public beach access is right across the street. The room was clean and the staff was friendly.
- Jonathan (10/5): LOVED It! - Stayed for one night, loved the check in process, the room was super clean, bed super comfy! I do wish the parking lot was a little bigger, but regardless, I will definitely be staying here again!
- Carol (6/5): - If you're looking for the most basic property to stay a night or two, this is your place. The room was clean and the space is very small. The window air conditioner made the room either very hot or very cold. The TV speaker was blown, so it resonates if turned up enough to hear it. The bathroom is the size of a campers bathroom. The bed is pretty comfortable and no bed bugs. Bare bones is the best way to describe it.
- Andrea (8/5): - Nice Motel for a one night passer by stay
- Mary (10/5): - Convenient and clean. The pool is kept. Love the gas grills
- brittany (8/5): - Overall the property is very clean. The only issue we had was housekeeping kept coming to the door even with the do not disturb sign. After knocking and we spoke they still unlocked the door. Checkout was at 11 and they came at 9:00 and then again at 10:45 when we were walking out. It should also be noted that parking is limited.
- Michael (10/5): - Nice Hotel
- JAMES (10/5): - Great motel, we try to get a couple days here every year. Very clean room and pool was great, kids loved it. I highly recommend.
- William (10/5): - Great little place to stay!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nags Head stop - Nice pool. Clean room
- Heather (10/5): Great! - Everything was great - communication through email made check in easy
- Ashley (10/5): - Super cute and affordable space right near the beach. The rooms were very clean and well maintained. We liked how easy it was to drive up to the room and unload the vehicle. Parking got slightly more difficult the busier it got, but it still wasn’t an issue. We did have an issue with the locking system on the door, but it was easily resolved over the phone. Would definitely stay here again
- Jana (10/5): - Loved how cute and nice everything was.
- jill (10/5): - It was newly updated and perfect for family.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Perfect solo trip with my dog across from beach
- Angela (10/5): - Had a great stay. The staff was nice and friendly. Love that it’s a mom and pop not corporate. It was very nice.
- Travis Storm (10/5): - Very quiet. Impeccably clean. Great restaurant beside of property. Would love to see more outdoor seating. A chair in the room would have been nice. Would highly recommend staying here!
- Jennifer (10/5): - We are a family of 4. Door code sent to my phone was a great way for checking in after hours. Parking was a little difficult at night, as a lot of vehicles were already there. AC was great and cold, but a little loud. Although we had neighbors on both sides, we never heard them. Place was convenient as we had family staying in a house near by.
- Amanda (10/5): - Lovely renovations and nice room. Super friendly and attentive staff available to help with ninor issues, like a missing remote, etc. Definitely plan to stay here again.
- Jennifer (8/5): Nice little beach motel - Door lock was not working properly and took many tries at opening but finally figured out that we had to pull the door the whole time.
- Julie (6/5): - The parking for your room is on the sidewalk right out side of the room and was really noisy of the mornings with people leaving
- Caleb (8/5): - Needs to be sprayed for bugs and needs lines for parallel parking
- Jack (8/5): - Stay was satisfaction, it is convenient to beach access, it is an older 1 level motel
But was competively priced and had a nice pool.
- Nicole (8/5): - I loved the basic kitchen set up and the same of the room was perfect for our family of three.
- Nina (8/5): - Pet friendly and conveniently located
- tony (8/5): Check in not smooth - The room was updated and cute decor. Had microwave, fridge, coffee maker and toaster oven in the room. Older motel that was clean. It was self Check in and was not very smooth in our case. No one was on property and instructions on how to obtain the code for our room was not very clear. We booked through a third party so did not receive check in instructions. Finally found out what to do from someone that encountered the same situation for check in. When a call was placed to the contact phone number we got a voice mail that a return phone call would be made at their earliest convenience. Not what you want to hear after a long day of travel. After about 10 minutes we received a phone call and was told that someone would be calling us with the code to our room which they did.
- Nikki (10/5): - Reminded me of old OBX. Kind of had a Route 66 vibe to it.
- Diane (10/5): - The property had all of the basiat an affordable price.
- Jason (8/5): - Easy place to get to and close to a lot of restaurants to walk to.
- Gaby (10/5): - Our stay was wonderful! The one complaint that I have is that someone tried to break into our room when we were in it, it was a very scary ordeal. Other than that happening our first night everything was wonderful and our room was so clean and we loved the little seating area in the room too!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Room was very clean and the location was great!
- Patrick (8/5): - Nothing fancy. Good place to sleep. Was clean. Would stay there again.
- Donna (10/5): - This was an impromptu trip for just the 2 of us and our dog. It’s a basic beach motel room and was exactly what we wanted. The location was across from the public beach access and behind the Dunes restaurant. Super convenient and clean. Will definitely be back.
- James (10/5): Room #2-Overall Cleanliness, Fair - We have stayed at the historic Tar Heel in the past & like the location first & foremost. This time, we were disappointed in the service, as far as cleanliness of the room. Arrived Friday afternoon, room was not checked ALL day on Saturday, no fresh towels, coffee, etc. Mention this to the front desk staff, he said there was no staff to take care of room at 2:30PM???
- Renee (6/5): Sad night - We have stayed here several times and enjoyed our stay. We arrived around midnight and was provided a keyless entry code which was perfect. Once we unloaded we noticed the crumbs on the carpet and a few burs which we picked up. My son went to the bathroom and stepped on burs with his bare foot as well as my husband by the sink. As I went to put our stuff in the fridge I noticed it had not been emptied. We went to bed only to be met with more burs in the bed. So we pulled back the sheets and picked them out. I’m the morning I roll a shower and dried my face with a towel that was full of burs. I told the girl at the front desk and she extended our stay by an hour. Just really sad to lose such a cute, clean motel we loved to stay at every year.
- Gillian (8/5): - All in all just fine. Good toaster and fridge for evening in room picnic. Clean towels and sheets...plenty of AC, easy to be comfortable. A bit out of date, but has some character. Old beachy feel. Friendly staff welcome in the office.
- Leigh Ann (8/5): - This property is directly across the street from a public beach access. The rooms are very neat and clean. The beds weren’t very comfortable but overall I would stay here again. I love all the extra hooks for hanging towels and wet clothes. I would stay here again!
- Jo (10/5): - Rooms are bright and clean. Easy walk to the beach. Relaxing atmosphere
- caitlin (10/5): - Would like to see recycling bins as an option for trash
- Rodrigo (10/5): Hits the spot - Tarheel hotel offered what we needed at the right price point: location, basic comfort needs
- Randy (6/5): - It was clean, but i found 2 centipedes in the bathroom as i got out of the shower that was in bad need of repair. Just was not worth the price and no sleep.
- Heather (6/5): - The outside of our room had a giant garbage bag that was never collected the entire time we were there. The room itself was clean and had several comforts of home (toaster oven, microwave, mini-fridge). There was noise outside of the room for several hours. Luckily the air conditioner drowned out the noise enough for us to fall asleep.
- Catherine (8/5): - Definitely an old-school beach motel that has an updated interior. Walls are thin and could hear people talking outside. Parking is tight. Went to the beach to watch a sunrise. Came back and wanted to rinse off my feet, but the only place I saw to do this was at the pool, which was locked. No issue with the pool being locked at that hour, but a foot rinsing station/hose would have been helpful. Did not rate staff/service, as we never encountered an employee. Would stay again, but would not necessarily be my first choice.
- Lawrence (10/5): - No problems.
- Don (8/5): - Nice room very close to the beach. The outside looks a little run down but the room was fresh and clean.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Nice stay - Very nice location, easy to find. Room was clean and updated. Comfortable bed and pillows.
- chance (10/5): - Very nice stay
- Marianne (10/5): Great Value and Felt Safe - Great hotel, right across the Beach public Access, has a clean pool to use as well as picnic area to eat lunch. It is within walking distance to a great restaurant and outlet mall. The bathrooms are spotless. The AC unit in the room really keeps it cool. I am a cold sleeper and had no problems while there.
- Bruce Harris (10/5): - An older but well maintained facility. I like any motel or restaurant that’s older than me!
- Christine (10/5): - Wonderful little old school motel! Super clean and simple, but with all the kitchen amenities, except for a hairdryer! Park right in front of your room too! I’d definitely stay again!!
- Tracy (8/5): - Clean hotel that was recently remodeled. Still need some updates on outside of building, very rusted doors which can be expected in ocean area. But first impressions are important. No staff on site if you check in after hours but the after hours person you call is friendly and helpful. No way to lock your door from inside. No bolts. Traveling as a single mom this made me nervous so something to fix. The door has a code but you still feel vulnerable. Otherwise clean and beautiful.
- Kenneth (8/5): - Room was small but was EXTREMELY clean. It looks like they made some remodeling and updating. The room size reminded me of the size of the older strip motels our family used in my youth.
- Gene (6/5): - Room was clean and pleasant. Motel offers pet friendly rooms. Toilet did not flush properly was only negative in our room.
- Kathy (10/5): - Very clean. Staff was friendly and helpful.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Not great - The bed was horrible- hard on one side, not very clean bathroom and kitchenette table. Pool was locked up.
Great location but otherwise it was small and loud neighbors.
- Kimberly (10/5): Nice Motel - Room was very nice!
- Heather (10/5): Cozy - Great location and a cozy set up.
- William (10/5): - It was nice being able to have our dog with us.
- John (6/5): - It was oldin grungy area in my opinion
- Gerald (2/5): - The place is a dump
- Paula (4/5): - Needs updating. Needs staff on site.
- David (6/5): - Room was spotless. Had grills had no propane or hosesr. Obviously construction going on. So couldn't grill. Woke up at 2030pm to a maintenance person banging on next room. Loud music allfor 158 dollars
- Andrew (2/5): Horrible and expensive - I was the only person there. No attendant. I was texted instruction to enter the room. I texted for the WiFi code an hour after arriving and it was sent at 11am the next day. There were bugs all over the room, and even under the sheets. The A/A - heater unit was loud and kept turning on and off all night. Impossible to sleep. There was no hot water and the room smelled musty. Do not stay here. Very Bates Motel feeling. It was $111 in January! I got an amazing room for $70 the next day on the beach!
- Curtiss (8/5): - It was an all right place to stay, a block or so off the beach, and best of all, it was next to my friends, that I was hanging out with.
