- Robert (7/5): The location area was very good, there was no atmosphere within the hotel very quiet no customers st - The location was very good NO BREAKFAST available at this location?
- Carol (10/5): Will go back there - Fantastic location friendly staff, great food nice place to stay. Forgot to put milk in room to late to ask
- Sean (9/5): -
- Chris (6/5): Well priced for the room size and quality. Better if they did breakfast - Room was excellent and the check in staff very good and friendly No breakfast & no way to check out properly.
Slipped over on the iced up path outside the door.
Very painful!
- Helen (7/5): Comfortable hotel, friendly staff, value for money. - Room was comfortable and clean. Good bedding and bathroom facilities In our room (5) we could hear a door slamming directly under our room. It stopped in late evening so I guess it was something to do with the kitchen. No hot breakfast available.
- Wendy (10/5): Very pleasant - Did not have breakfast
- Gerald (8/5): - Lady showed me the room very beautiful No one about when I left
- Shaun (10/5): -
- Richard (7/5): Convenient and comfy with friendly staff - a good country location - Good location - easy to find as on main London Road.
Comfy country pub, popular with locals.
Good local real ale.
Friendly staff. Had to find my own way in at 10.40 on a saturday night as main building was shut - would've been fine if I was told about the rear door earlier...
- David (5/5): NO PROBLEM WITH THE ROOM BUT APART FROM THAT A BIT OF A GRAVEYARD. NO ONE PRESENT WHEN WE LEFT - THERE WAS NO BREAKFAST AVAILABLE AND I HAD EXPECTED IT FROM THE WEBSITE
- Paul (8/5): Fijn en comfortabel - Leuke plek om te overnachten en heel gastvrij welkom -
- Stan (4/5): Nice place (apart from A4 traffic noise). No breakfast was a nasty surprise. - Very good food - but small portions No one has old me they didn’t serve breakfast. I’m going n an 8 day long distance fund raising run so I have to set off for 14 miles with no breakfast. I would have booked elsewhere if I’d been informed.
- John (5/5): A bit disappointing. - Room was clean and bed was comfortable Very creaky floor, (#5) and could hear other rooms floors too. Lots of banging from kitchen below and other rooms, at one point my room shook. Noisy children outside late into the evening. Only one milk sachet for a double room and no breakfast facilities. Staff were not very offay with things.
- Jane (10/5): -
- Dianna (10/5): Please disregard old feedback -the new owner is really making a difference. If you are cycling the 4 - if also really re - The new owner is really making a difference. A lot of improvements already made and continue to. The gardens are looking fantastic, new outdoor area and furniture too.
Friendly staff and wow - the chef is amazing! . Do stay for a meal - incredible!
I would really recommend you consider this property for an overnight stay and dinner.
- Fernando (10/5): Fantastica! Recomendo muito - Muito boa! Tudo
Muito
Limpo, atendimento de primeira Silencio a noite
- tracey (6/5): - I was disappointed as when I made the booking it says breakfast included, once I confirmed the booking it said room only, the property still says breakfast available but this is not an option and misleading, I have complained to Expedia, but this has not changed
- Scott (10/5): - We enjoyed our stay at The Pelican and it was a short walk to Canal after dinner.
- Griffin (8/5): Riat resbite - Food and lovely relaxing restaurant No air cond. 3 sash windows bit only 1 to open.
- Michelle (10/5): - The Pelican was a lovely place to stay on our trip; the surrounding lawns, garden, pond and brook were lovely to sit by on a warm day, and the dinner we had was really excellent. Our room was nice and had plenty of room, but was very, very warm (it faced the afternoon sun), and there is no A/C. The weather was unusually warm for England during our stay… We purchased electric fans to help with the heat and left them there for the Inn - we hope they will be made available to future guests.
- Ben (6/5): A nice pub, a good room, but no breakfast! - The location was good for me - I was walking the Kennet and Avon canal so this is close by. It's a very pleasant pub and the evening meal I had was nice, served by friendly staff. The room was comfortable and well equipped No breakfast served, which was something of a surprise. On arrival the lady serving was a bit brusque and asked for confirmation that I'd paid - something they should have! Not very apologetic about breakfast - just saying they were a pub! Yes, a pub that serves food at other times. It's a fairly high price for a room with no breakfast, and there's not much else in the area if you're on foot as I was. Staff need a bit more training and some sort of option for breakfast - even if something ready made and cold, would be appreciated. Guests shouldn't leave hungry!
- Matthew (5/5): BEDROOMS RUN DOWN - The staff were lovely. And the food was excellent. The bedrooms were neglected and need a deep clean, the windows don't open more than a couple of inches. The shower, you need to hold shower head in one hand and try to wash with other. No handrails to get in and out, very slippy
We were there for 2 nights as we travelled down for a family funeral, the bedroom was not cleaned norr towels replaced . Left 2 TBags and 2 coffees fir the 2 nights the bar was supposed to be opened until 11pm, it was closed at 9pm. Sorry to say we will NEVER sleep there again. But would go back for food.
- Michael (4/5): Not great for the cost of it - The lady on reception was lovely, no towels in the room, and when i tried tp the get one the hotel was empty, no breakfast which i was told by hotels.com there was one, it should have been £40 max not £104
- Andrew (4/5): - Décor wise the room was fine, water pressure wasn’t great but was ok. The issue was there is no ventilation in the room. There is a double skinned window, the first was the original window and that is now seized shut, then there is a more modern layer which can slide up but all this allows is the convection from the old window to try to cool the room. It was a sweat box and I ended up sleeping in the car. Management there are useless and couldn’t have the decency to reply to emails. Staff just wanted to close up early cause there was no customers and I’m really not surprised. Doubt they will be open much longer with customer service and facilities like this.
- Debasish (7/5): Good -
- Dave (6/5): - Did not do breakfast
- Mary (8/5): - Breakfast no longer available here. Expedia needs to update their details.
- Tracy (5/5): Passable - Bed was comfy Quite expensive for just room only. No breakfast included.
Myself and army pals were disappointed. Won't book there again.
Bar shut at 10pm too early
- Brian (4/5): Glad to leave - Restaurant No breakfast
- Robert (6/5): Ideal location from travel. - Ideal location for travel, and food/service in the pub/restaurant was fantastic. But the windows didn't open in a very warm room, and they were not daily changed or cleaned! Rooms have been updated, but the shower and carpet are not great.
- Anne (7/5): well priced - service and food noisy room.
it was at the back above the kitchen overlooking the service area
loud music from below and crashing under the window
- Fi (8/5): Very good value for money - The food at the Pelican was exceptional and the staff incredibly friendly and helpful. We booked very last minute and they were very accomodating. One of the two rooms was a little noisy I think perhaps an ac unit on the roof.
- Jonathan (7/5): cam, we stopped, we - Convenience and price
- patricia (8/5): - at booking the hotels .com site stated breakfast included but on arrival were told no breakfast as they did not do breakfasts, whilst very disappointing our stay was very good, food firstclass and management and staff exellent
- Ben (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ruth (8/5): Very good -
- Zoe (6/5): - A bit of a bizarre set up.
The main access is via the pub unless it’s between the hours of 2100 and 1200 in which case you have to use the fire exit. Check out process doesn’t exist.
Breakfast isn’t an option, despite being listed as.
The road is pretty noisy. But the beds are very comfy.
- Cerian (10/5): - Bedroom was decorated beautifully. Bed very comfy. Lovely bathroom - bit cool. Hot water for shower. Had dinner and lunch there which was delicious
- Cerian (10/5): - Great bed. Well decorated bedroom. Bathroom good - a little chilly. Hot shower over bath. Could do with a grab rail on wall over bath to hold on to as you get in and out of the bath
- Shaun (4/5): No Breakfast (despite website) but Meal was Great! - We always book B&B (breakfast included in price) so imagine our surprise when checking in we were told that there was no breakfast! We could buy, at extra cost, a continental breakfast bag. Hence only two stars! The manager was apologetic but we also had it on our papers. We chose the Pelican because it was exactly the same price but with breakfast as a nearby place without breakfast!
Anyway, we had a lovely evening meal in the restaurant in the Pelican, so we can recommend that.
The room was cold - single glazed windows and a not very warm radiator but there was an electric heater in the wardrobe which we used. There was no heating in the bathroom. The bed was comfortable.
- Ruth (8/5): Excellent value - better wifi would have really helped - Loved the restaurant and the comfy bed Wi-Fi really dodgy - didn’t work at all overnight and had to reconnect to hotel Wi-Fi every time I wanted to send a message - no one could phone in all evening either
- Mike (10/5): The room exceeded my expectations. It was lovely and the little touches of quality were welcome. - There was no breakfast Could have been breakfast!
- Sara (9/5): Splendid - Super staff
- Sam (1/5): Worst place in the UK? - Driving away - nothing to like about this hell hole! No hot water. No staff. Noisy room. Creeky floors. Funny smells. Constant traffic noise. Corporate pub chain mafia. Fortunately Booking.com acknowledged the situation and handled the refund.
- Nona (10/5): A fantastic place to stay, with kind staff and very dog-friendly! - We had a wonderful stay at The Pelican Inn. We stayed with our little dog and it was super pet-friendly. The staff were excellent and answered any questions I had. The room was spotless and we would absolutely stay again!
- Rob (7/5): Good -
- Michael (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (8/5): Very good -
- Rebecca (7/5): Good -
- Sue (8/5): Very good -
- James (9/5): Very clean and tidy with friendly staff. Bed was very comfortable. - The location was ideal for walking the local canal. As no breakfast was on offer we travelled to Hungerford which was not far.
- Lisa (10/5): Very relaxing - Really dog friendly
Good food
Comfy bed
Helpful staff
- Dominic (2/5): Very poor -
- Johnathan (10/5): Exceptional - The staff welcomed me at check-in and where there when I returned at around 21.45 for the night. Alas, the bar was by then closed so I couldn't enjoy a locally made nightcap, but I appreciate that trade is quiet and not worth keeping the lights on if no one is coming for a meal or drink. I slept really well on super comfy bed, had a great shower in the morning and on leaving discovered the waterside area! What a treat!! So, in all a great experience to be thoroughly recommended.
Many thanks and best wishes for the future; you've got a brilliant place!
Jon
- Amanda (5/5): Mixed-nice beds, friendly bar staff. Very poor on hospitality-no breakfast - The room and the morning staff., 1) No hot water on night 1. This was not communicated to us on arrival by the manager which is pretty poor service. To get a hot shower in the morning we had to exit the building walk round to the bar (internal door locked).
2) No breakfast! They don’t do it. Not even a Break fast bad ( which is included in the literature in the rooms as being available(. Again this was not mentioned at all on arrival and we had to ask. The morning staff kindly did provide us with breakfast on day 2 as we complained.
3) We had to ask for the room stock of coffees etc to be replenished, bin emptied etc ourselves.
We were there for a number of days due to location otherwise we would have stayed elsewhere.
- ben (4/5): - Stayed here a few times on this occasion it was only after I checked in I was told there is no hot water during my stay, not ideal when you have just finished work
- Dominic (2/5): Not worth your time of day - Location is great. Firstly there was no hot water and we weren’t informed until i enquired to the front desk if there was a problem. No breakfast despite being clearly advertised. Not even an apology or a refund offered.
- Stephen (8/5): Company paid a refund with no quibbles due to the water issue.Would recommend in the future as everything else was very - Great location, very clean, nice restaurant with great staff. Unfortunately no hot water due to a boiler issue.
- ben (2/5): - No hot water and the water was just too cold to shower in the evening and morning.
- Marion (9/5): Superb -
- Mathew (5/5): Passable -
- Steven (9/5): Superb -
- James (10/5): Exceptional -
- Karen (8/5): Lovely place nice food and smashing staff - Good location and really clean nice decor and staff were fabulous It’s on the main A4 which we knew but the traffic took some getting used to when trying to sleep but we got used to it after the first night also the plumbing for bath and toilet needs to be improved and a bathroom bin would have been good !
- Irene (10/5): Absolutely lovely! - It truly was a lovely place to sta. Staff very friendly and the room was really lovely and exceptionally clean. Will def visit again. Food btw really amazing!
- Louise (8/5): Very good -
- Green (6/5): Pleasant -
- Hazel (6/5): Pleasant - Location ideal for seeing family There was not a pull down blind on end window. The inn sign shone into our window all night.
- Tomas (8/5): Very good -
- Ian (10/5): Exceptional - Lovely place to stay ideal spot for touring not to good for taxis for a night very costly for trip to hungerford not the hotels fault other wise all good
- Gary (7/5): Good -
- Jane (8/5): Very good -
- Doug (3/5): Mediocre - The bed was comfortable. Nice snacks in the room. Room was dirty. Staining round the toilet. Water pressure was abysmal and shower came out in a drizzle. Alternated between boiling hot and freezing cold water. Basin tap in bathroom was not secured.
- Prince (2/5): Prince Dakpoe - There was no body in the hotel when I got there. I rang the contact number so many times and could hear the phone ringing from out but no body answered it. It was so disheartening that I had to drive of and sleep in my car in a lay-by along the road. I have since been trying to get a refund but have had no response so far even though I was told the manager will call me.
I am really frustrated now and need a refund as soon as possible.
- Paul (3/5): Poor - Good location for visits and walks. Beds comfortable, if you had the chance to sleep for the noise.. Overlooking very dirty yard and chimney, room above kitchen, and noisy extractor fans. We were not told about Ragga party taking place which vibrated the room and set off several car alarms. The young staff, when asked 'why weren't told, we were bluntly told that it was well advertised!! It was not on Website and we were not informed when we phoned to check booking. Lack of sleep on the Reggae night which went on until 12 pm, spoilt any hope of returning home well rested. The young manager was pleasant, but clearly all the staff needed a mature person to give them direction. A very disappointing three day break.
- Cobaltrage (5/5): They have been improving but still have a way to go. - We enjoyed the pub and the grounds. The staff was pleasant and helpful. The building was charming and the room was clean. There was always plenty of parking. The Inn is in a great location for exploring the area. We stayed in May, so it was not even Summer yet, but our room was sweltering every night. we found it difficult to get any restful sleep while lying there sweating all night. The reason I could not give a higher score is because we had just left a week-long stay at a different inn that was in the area and it was quite a bit superior when compared to the Pelican.
- Colin (3/5): Good staff did their best with a rubbish facility - Dan, the duty manager was massively helpful despite the fact he had been dealt a very bad hand. Nothing much, none of the bathroom fittings worked from the crooked toilet seat to the cold water tap which turned in its entirety and the absence of hot water.
- Ronald (1/5): Had to frequently use Fire door. Did not stay for 2nd paid booked night!! - Breakfast was not available!!! No hot water! No chair. Sink plug no chain to remove. Wardrobe not usable due to foul smell. Bathroom mirror too high on wall. Bed throw frayed. No phone. No sanitary bin. Bad creaky floorboards.
- Sarah (10/5): - We just stopped here for the night and got a pleasant surprise. Wonderful friendly staff, a good meal in the large gardens, a comfortable room. There was a bit of traffic noise so not ideal for a quiet getaway, but it was perfect for our needs as a stopping place to break up a long journey.
- Leigh (9/5): Superb -
- Glen (7/5): Good -
- Chris (7/5): Good -
- Chloe (8/5): Very good -
- Antony (7/5): Good -
- Peter (10/5): Exceptional - Rooms, Dinner Gardens
- Kate (5/5): Disappointing. - We had a decent night's sleep, those of us not facing the fast and busy road. The garden is pretty. There was no breakfast and no kitchen open for an evening meal. The place was therefore dead but worse than that, since we were on bicycles and had cycled some way to get there, we had to cycle into Hungerford and back again in the dark in order to eat some food. This was not ideal. And again no breakfast so we had to cycle somewhere else to find that. I am not sure how helpful a bed is without breakfast... The staff member that showed us around was comically unconcerned.
- Stuart (9/5): Perfect location, friendly staff lovely food clean rooms - Location to the canal Absolutely nothing 👍👍
- Bridget (10/5): Happy with our stay, and will return when we complete more of the canal. - Historic property with nice grounds. Well placed for Kennet and Avon Canal. Spacious. Menu was not too big. Welcomed dogs. Very friendly staff. Relaxed atmosphere. Plenty of supplies in the room. N/A
- Tara (6/5): Pleasant - Nice size rooms. Nice tea and coffee in room. The unbearable heat. The noise. The access down the stairs was not suitable for all. The check in/out times.
- Waite (6/5): Pleasant - Location Room 6 - smelly with windows open due to being by kitchen & a bit noisy from kitchen.
- Su (9/5): Superb - Friendly staff helpful, lovely atmosphere Rooms were hot, and breakfast was not included although muffins were left in the rooms
- Howard (10/5): A great location to stay if you want to visit the Canal and Forest Forest for walking. The pub serves superb food and th - very handy for walks along the canal and located in beautiful countryside. the room was a good size and very comfortable bed. the restaurant in the pub served good quality food at reasonable price and the staff were very attentive. appreciated the fact that our dog was welcome
