Guest Reviews
- Malcolm (10/5): - Blackbear Guesthouse has lots of comfort and stylish character. I was a solo traveler without a car but was able to take advantage of a seasonal bus service along the Pacific Rim Highway between Tofino and Ucluelet to get into both towns. The hospitable owners were also happy to give me a lift to Tofino if our journeys coincided. I used Pacific Rim Navigators to get a return trip from Long Beach Airport to the Guesthouse, which is not too far from the airport.
- Bronwyn (10/5): - The Cedar room was perfect. Beautifully appointed and very comfortable. Enough space and bar ‘fridge, plates, silverware etc to organise a simple breakfast. Especially loved the guest deck with the gorgeous peaceful estuary views. We saw our first bear in the wild.. a distant moving black blob, but it was a bear! Jay generously provided binoculars for a possible future sighting but alas!
- jodi (10/5): - Such a quant little guest room and had everything you will need. Super clean and walkable to the beach.
- Sara (2/5): - Do yourself a favor, do not stay here! The owner is miserable! It's a long story and the owner has already told me that if I leave a bad review she'll just come back and defend it. In short, we were in the area with a bigger group so had to find accommodation for us in a few different places as we all didn't fit in one house. I booked everything under my name to match the credit card payment (all on Expedia) and when we got there we all divided ourselves between the Airbnb's. This one had room for 5 and so 4 stayed here (2 adults and 2 children). One evening a few others from our group went there for a couple hours to hang out and got quite loud. (They didn't realize they had a suite under them and no one knocked on their door to say anything) The next day we got kicked out! The owner (Bobby) said that it was false booking because it was registered under my name but I wasn't physically staying there! I have no idea why that matters, it was still our group..it also never said anywhere that I needed to register the names of all occupants She then proceeded to take money off my card without any communication for the 2 children who also stayed there. Very untrustworthy. (Expedia said children can stay for free!) Apparently we 'violated the policies' but no one sent us any policies at all. it wasn't listed on Expedia either. Nothing about this makes sense. Wondering if this was a easy money grab but other than the noise complaint, she could have been much more reasonable.
- Steve (10/5): - Close to bike trail, beaches and town
- Anonymous (10/5): I could not have been in a better place ! - I liked everything . There is not one single thing I didn’t like.
- David (10/5): - The fact they had a guest deck area to view the bears. Made to feel very welcome
- Jodie (4/5): Disappointing - The owners of this property were very nice and friendly. The room was a bedroom, dual key so locked off from the rest of the apartment with no facilities other that a bathroom and bed. There was a refrigerator but no where to prepare food, no sink, very few dishes, 2 stools for sitting with nowhere to relax. There were 2 outside chairs but too cold of an evening to sit out, we ended up sitting on the bed the entire time.
The property is on a river inlet as the photos show but its very shallow, more like mudflats that had no water most of the time and plenty of mosquitos.
Overall we were disappointed that being 10 minutes from town it offered nowhere to sit and relax or cook. It's pretty much just a bedroom with refrigerator and bathroom. Most accommodation I have stayed in that is a distance from town is usually is set up with facilities for self catering.
- Anonymous (9/5): Great location, perfect space. - The location was close to the beach which was nice. And the coffee selection in the room was great. There was also local chocolate out for us, which was really tasty! Not applicable
- Ad (7/5): Saved by nature! - Great location! Comfortable stay. Good communication with host, with a heads up for a road block by which we were able to change travel plan in time. The suite did not meet up with the expectations in accordance with the price paid. TV remote (which was tacky) did not work, an Apple device had to be used instead, which worked fine after explanation by the host. The wall in the shower had joints falling out and looked dirty, needs freshing up. It is all about details, but at that price level it is that what makes the difference.
- Debra (10/5): Stunning 10/10 - Stunning property and everything was thought of. Wonderful Not enough blind on the windows so bright daylight at 5.30 am
- thuy nga (10/5): - Awesome apartment, beautiful and spacious for a small group or family, so perfectly situated for everything to do and see in Tofino, and the Sound on one side and the beach on the other are just wonderful.
The hosts are so lovely, really will only stay there next trips!
- Sarah (9/5): Superb - The space was lovely and quaint. They had great local shower items and thought of lots of things one might need! The heat was finicky, and we had trouble adjusting it.
- Neil (10/5): Location, views, comfort…. - Comfort, clean and well presented, everything we needed… (location fantastic)Quiet and peaceful and would never get board of sat on the chairs on the guest back decking overlooking stunning views….Excellent guesthouse and very friendly hosts.. Nothing..
- Tania (10/5): Just Bliss - Loved the peace and quiet and how cute and tranquil it was..very clean and extremely comfortable - it was just perfect
- Robert (10/5): - Great clean and cosy stay with bikes and access to deck with stunning views. Host was very friendly and helpful.
- Kendra (10/5): A wonderful stay, beautiful view from the deck. Loved the bikes. - It was sparkling clean and comfortable. Loved everything about the property. The local chocolate and bath products were a plus too. Nothing
- Craig (10/5): - The property was in a beautiful setting, surrounded by trees and near the ocean. We walked to the beach in less than 10 mins. The suite was cozy, clean and everything we hoped for. We loved our stay!
- Sylvain (10/5): Great host, superb view from the guest deck, great beach close by, quiet and comfy ! -
- Supakrit (10/5): Exceptional -
- Brenda (10/5): Fantastic property in Tofino - Great location. Very clean
Great Hosts. Highly recommend!
- Jaling (10/5): Awesome! - Great location and very well stocked ! Check out time was a bit earlier than a hotel
- Sarah (9/5): Superb - Super cute and cozy room, love the little touches from the local chocolates and soaps to the espresso machine and maps and brochures! Great location as well, ~10min walk from Chesterman Beach and ~5min drive from town. If you’re into running or biking, the guesthouse is right beside the multi-use path, we went for a run and it was super convenient. Definitely would stay here again on our next trip to Tofino!
- Bernadette (8/5): Very good -
- Kerry (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jo (10/5): Ideal location, lovely host and attention to detail just made it ❤️ - Wow this place was a find! Beautifully presented, lots of care in the finer details to make our stay super comfortable. Noticed and hugely appreciated it all. Hosts really lovely and on hand if needed, the stay is a private, quiet, stunning location with gorgeous views from the decking and a perfect hot tub. Nothing we didn’t like! It was brilliant thank you.
- Mathieu (10/5): - Great spot!
- Derek (10/5): Exceptional -
- David (9/5): Very enjoyable - Great facility Nil
- Emily (9/5): Cozy little suite near the beach - The location was perfect, we were able to get to the beach and town centre quickly. The bed was super comfy and it was a cozy little suite. Host was quick to respond and very nice. The rain jackets in the closet were awesome and definitely needed during our stay - nice touch. Nit-picky, but the dining space would be improved with a microwave. I think either the photos or listing of the two suites should be separated online, so that the location and amenities are more clear. Or simply some labels on the photos or in the description to differentiate "Upper Suite" and "Lower Suite."
- Avery (10/5): Exceptional -
- Linda (10/5): Exceptional - The guesthouse was perfect and made our visit to Tofino so relaxing. All amenities were excellent. We especially loved the hot tub, the bicycles, the Adirondack chairs, and that we could walk to the beach. Really friendly and kind host.
- Spencer (8/5): - A quite rental for a solo traveler.
- Tracey (8/5): Love our stay... highly recommend! - Short walk to beach, lovely quiet area out of town. Great spot at front of house to sit and relax in front of lake! Also provided bike to use on cycle path leading into town!
- Joanne (6/5): - Nice accommodation. Liked how bikes were included and it was a very short easy ride to the beach. House was stalked with everything you need to cook and the hot tub is nice to relax in. The guest house is very close to permanent residents. Found the mornings were quite noisy.
- Deborah (10/5): - Even during a storm and a power outage, the place remained cosy and warm and the owners checked in with guests to make sure they were safe and had everything they needed.
- William (10/5): - Lovely place with great hosts. Would definitely stay again
- Becky (10/5): Absolutely fantastic! - This was one of our favourite places to stay in the whole of our road trip around Canada. The accommodation was perfect. It is spacious, super clean, comfortable, the attentional to detail on everything in the room was just superb. The view from the guest platform was stunning, it is like a little oasis staying here! The recommendations form the hosts were excellent, you can tell they really know Tofino well.
As to the hosts, well honestly you could not find nicer hosts, who are genuinely interested in the wellbeing and positive experience of their guests. We unfortunately had a puncture whilst staying and Hertz left us without any assistance despite having road cover. The help we received from the whole family to help us went above and beyond and we were so grateful for their help. Thank you for making our stay so special despite the stress of our car hire. That we could not stay for longer, we will be back!
- Ingrid (9/5): A wonderful location and room for our purpose - a wedding at the Wick. - VERY quiet. Private and clean. No microwave.
- John (10/5): - Fabulous couple of days staying here. Amazing location with incredible views over the estuary and mud flats. Sadly rained most of the time we were there so no bear sightings but plenty of other things to do in the area.
Apartment was extremely comfortable and wished we had booked it for longer.
- Steven (10/5): - The property was beautifully furnished and comfortable. Complementary teas and coffees were welcome and toiletries supplied were of premium quality. The property was conveniently located to explore Tofino and was a short walking distance from a beautiful shoreline. The owners wer friendly and helpful.
As there are 2 properties on the same site, be careful to check which you have chosen and the facilities associated.
- Daniel (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sammy-jo (10/5): The most amazing stay. - I cannot recommend this properly enough! Everything was completely perfect, from the softness of the towels to the comfort of the bed. As soon as I stepped foot into the property I was blown away, the attention to detail is incredible and really makes this feel like a home away from home - albeit it a better one! I only wish I could live here - stunning. 10/10
- Karisa (10/5): Exceptional - We loved the little details like the local chocolate and toiletries The upstairs guest were a bit loud.
- Chris (10/5): Exceptional -
- Rachel (8/5): Very good - We only stayed one night and was more than adequate for a stop over.
- Matthew (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful setting
- mike (10/5): - Perfect area
- Cynthia (10/5): - Lovely quiet room with amenities of soap, shampoo, coffee, tea, mini fridge and a few dishes to use. Great guest deck overlooking the lagoon and bikes available to use for getting around.
- Marijke (9/5): Lovely - Very cosy and the most beautiful view on the deck, we even saw black bears!
The hosts were also very sweet.
Everything was neat and hygienic. There is a gas tank next to the bedroom window that makes noise every once and a while so we awoke sometimes from it because we like to sleep with the window cracked open. But nothing a pair of earplugs couldn't handle.
- claire (10/5): - Beautiful place.. quiet and picturesque.
- Kevin (7/5): Incredible property in a great location - This is a beautifully designed lodge, in a good location about 10 minutes to Tofino by car. Chesterman beach is a 5-minute walk. The entire area is beautiful. There is so much to see and do. It could be a Tofino thing, but the price per night was double what we paid anywhere else on Vancouver Island. So you expect a very high standard of accommodation. Unfortunately, our experience was not quite so luxury. We had a broken hot tub for the first night and no hot tub at all for the second night. We were told about this a few days before our stay and a small refund was agreed. To actually get the refund processed, I had to take the issue up with Booking, after our stay. This was a shame. Communication with the hosts was overall quite poor. They took 5 months to reply to a question I had when I made the initial booking. That said, in person, the host was very pleasant and had lots of great stories to tell. Throughout our stay, there was constant banging and construction work, which detracted a lot from the experience. This was preparatory work for the replacement of the hot tub. So, overall, I think we were just unlucky with our stay and the timing of things. Also, the lodge was not ready at 4pm for check in, as there had been a problem with the cleaning staff.
- Kirk (9/5): Superb - Stunning location and great apartment. You'll not regret staying here. Hosts were helpful and knowledgeable of local area as well.
- Harald (9/5): Superb -
- Lynn (10/5): Exceptional - Great location quite and very comfortable
- Sarah (9/5): Superb - Loved our stay. They have a peaceful spot in the wilderness of tofino, and we had such a great time soaking it all in!
- Joanna (10/5): At one with nature. - This guesthouse is in a beautiful location, very close to Chesterman beach, and about 5km from Tofino town centre. The facilities within the guesthouse have been nicely thought out. The back of the main house has a fabulous platform to chill and watch nature. Idyllic view. Errr nothing...the weather was not brilliant, nothing can be done about that.
- Yi-fang (10/5): A lovely cozy place to relax - Cozy and comfortable NA
- Danah (10/5): Exceptional -
- Diana (10/5): - It is literally a 5 minute walk to Chestermans beach which is amazing. The cabin was warm and inviting, the kitchen was well stocked and they even included an emergency bag if needed. Great host, very personable.
The cabin is just inches from the main house so if complete privacy is what you’re after this may not offer as much privacy as some need. For our family though it was wonderful, the loft bed in the hidden little nook was really cool. Very nice place
- Scott (9/5): Superb - Amazing location. Hosts were exceptional. The bed mattress firmness was not what I normally like, but it was ok.
- Kalynka (6/5): Poor communication from host, room was nice; good for one, small for two people. - Room was nice Communication has been port, after check-in didn’t hear from the hosts and they didn’t respond to my text. After I left and because payment didn’t actually go through via Booking, though I did get a receipt for payment, and because the host didn’t take payment when I checked-in I have been harassed in the following week for payment and being told I’m wrong they are right and the issue is with me and the booking I made; all while I’ve still been travelling and with little cell reception. It’s been a horrible after experience, would not recommend staying here, communication is very poor.
- Sylvia (5/5): Quiet, good bed but plan to eat out all the time. - Good location, comfy bed, appreciated the huge umbrella. Entry/seating area uncomfortable and small. Countertop are too small and no sink. Fridge next to useless and leaked during power outage. More hooks inside closet would have been helpful and some outside for wet gear? Flashlight in closet didn’t work.
- Jeff (10/5): - Property was as described. Nice quiet location just a few minutes out of town. Minimal kitchen amenities so staying in a bit of a challenge, but many good dining options nearby. Good value in a nice location.
- Michael (10/5): amazing time - Clean, lots of little extras that we weren't expecting like a couple kombuchas and chocolate.
- William (10/5): Exceptional -
- Alison (9/5): Superb - Very comfortable, cozy suite. A lot of attention to detail. Hosts were away but everything we needed was available. We have an EV car so an outside plug to charge would have been nice as there are limited charging options in Tofino.
- Daphne (10/5): Excellent location and amenities. Thoughtful and friendly host. - Everything that we needed and more!
- Annemarie (10/5): Excellent facilities, magical property, friendly family. - The location was beautiful and the fairy garden was an unexpected surprise. Just lovely. Maybe add a lamp to the front room.
- Karen (10/5): Very delightful, great views!!! - Super clean and really well equipped.
- Olivia (10/5): Exceptional -
- Ryan (6/5): Pleasant - Cute and cosy Make sure you realise your booking IS attached to the family home. Not as rural and secluded as the photos make out. The outside seating area for cedar cottage is staring right at the driveway of the family’s cars.
There is NO kitchen or cooking facilities in the Cedar Room
- Mike (10/5): Great location and very clean - Excellent location. Very clean. Very friendly owner. No complaints either than hotels.ca need to separate the two suites at this location (one being the Blackbear guesthouse and the other the cedar room). One has a kitchen and the other one does not. The place was perfect and we enjoyed our stay.
- Lexie (10/5): Short & sweet - Super cute and cozy!
- Trever (10/5): - Everything is very thoughtful. From rain coats, board games, chocolates, bathroom organization, full stocked kitchen supplies, bbq, hot tub, bikes and to many to count. I stay alot of places for work and this was top notch. Thank you
- Zlatica (10/5): Bobbi and Jay were amazing and helpful. - Great location and amazing comfortable spacious accommodation, very private, walking distance to the beach.
- Kathryn (9/5): It was a great, quiet, relaxing, comfortable stay - The location was lovely, loved the guest patio and the amenities.
- Anonymous (9/5): Superb -
- Alana (10/5): - Wonderful room, excellent locally crafted shampoos and soaps. Complimentary bikes and rain jackets. Very friendly and informative host. Close to beautiful Chesterman beach but a bit far from town and most restaurants however there is a free summer shuttle that runs until around 7-8pm. Overall a great time! Would book again.
- Stepha (9/5): Cozy, well equipped lodge with lovely touches. - The close location to the beach, views over the inlet, hot tub and friendly host Fridge was a bit noisy
- Ian (10/5): Exceptional - Great location for exploring the whole area, room had a lovely seating area with fridge and plenty of extras such as waterproofs (not needed in July) and Bear spray etc in the cupboard. All very clean with separate bedroom had enough space for 2. Outside the property was a lovely deck with a view across, where we could see bears on the far shore at times. Walking distance to a lovely beach, and recommend Co-op in Tofino for supermarket. Arrangements for self check in and check out were very smooth, just a shame we didn't get to meet the owners during our visit. Nothing!
- Jill (10/5): Exceptional -
- Shelley (6/5): Pleasant -
- Lorna (10/5): Perfect suite in a beautiful area. Ideal location to explore Tofino. - Beautiful suite in a beautiful area. Stunning views from the deck and only a few minutes walk to the beach. The suite has everything you could possibly need and Bobbi was a perfect host. Loved our stay. Would highly recommend. Nothing.
- Heather (10/5): - Super quiet and close to the beaches! I stayed in the Cedar Room, which is much bigger than the photos make it out to be. Bathroom was completely stocked, and the decor really added to the overall vibe of the place.
For those who prefer not to pay for parking in Tofino or the beaches: the owner even has a selection of bikes that you're free to travel around with!
10/10 would stay again :)
- Daniel (10/5): Tofino is magical, and the black bear guest house only heightened this beautiful trip. Truly incredible - Amazing! The house had great amenities and ambiance. Cozy but spacious and in a great location. Bobbi and her family were very kind and accommodating. Would recommend anyone to stay at Black bear guest house. Truly one of the best bookings I’ve ever stayed at. Nothing. It was perfect
- Eunice (10/5): cosy - lovely, cosy and stylish just could have done with some milk or cream to have with tea and coffee
- Sean (10/5): - Loved our time art the Black Bear Guesthouse. Beautiful property. Loved the bikes. Great hosts. Can't say enough positive things!! Can't wait to return!!!
- Colin (9/5): A lovely, peaceful retreat with friendly hosts. Wish we could have stayed longer! - beautiful property and very well appointed. fantastic views from the deck.
- Dominik (10/5): Great Stay :) - Very nice and clean room, great hosts, Thanks!
- Frances (9/5): I’d stay again. - Excellent proximity to the beach. Kitchen had everything you could need. The living area was large and comfortable.
- John (9/5): I really enjoyed the location, the kitchen, the space. - Host was very kind and thoughtful... extremely friendly and helpful. Would have liked to have said good-bye at the end.
- Nicholas (10/5): - We enjoyed our stay at the black bear guesthouse. We had the cedar room, beds are comfortable and bathrooms clean and well appointed. Great price for a visit in the off season. If you book the larger room, the hot tub looks good and is situated so as to give you some privacy from the main house.
- Todd (10/5): - The owners are very polite and responsive. We didn't arrive until 11:30 p.m. and they had no issue with receiving us at that time. We will be booking at this property again next year
- James (9/5): Superb - Quiet location a short walk from Chesterman Beach is fantastic. Suite is compact and well appointed. Great value!
- Kara_m (10/5): We loved everything about it! - My husband and I stayed in the queen studio for 4 nights. It was immaculate and cute as can be. There was lots of attention to detail, and things like the robes, blankets, and bath products were high quality. Bobbi was awesome and very friendly and accommodating. The only thing I would have liked is a microwave to heat our leftovers, but she did offer to let us use the kitchen in the other studio. The property was lovely and private and perfectly located. We loved every thing about it!
- Jobb (8/5): Very good -
- Julio (10/5): We enjoyed our stay in this lovely and peaceful guesthouse. - Everything in our room was presented in a most charming and warm way. It's impressive how the space available is arranged in a very practical and yet extremely charming way. We loved the place and at this time of the year it's very reasonably priced. Since the owners were not at home when we arrived it was not immediately clear where we were to go. We took a chance by walking into the guest room that seemed available because the door was unlocked.
- Fox (9/5): Superb -
- Olga (8/5): Very good - Great location (walking distance to South Chesterman Beach), cozy room, and comfortable bed. If only the weather was better, views from the deck would be better. Chocolates as a welcome gift were a nice touch :)
