• HelpfulAngel (6/5): Very average place - We didn't stay here just had food in their restaurant. Unfortunately there aren't too many options in Kirkwall, so we were lucky enough to get a table here. I wouldn't say it's the best restaurant. The service is not very friendly and the place itself lacks luster. We ordered their soup of the day and scampi and chips both of which were all right. I wouldn't recommend this place.
• Roving58594300871 (2/5): Got turned away from the restaurant - Restaurant looked lovely. Bar rowdy. Didn’t get to try the food as you turned us away for having dogs, despite having only three covers eating. We would have spend £60 or so, but we never got the chance. Oh well, enjoy the cruise liners instead. Such a shame really.
• sheilaroussel (4/5): Not a great experience - The staff were very helpful and friendly. The breakfast was good value with a fair selection in the menu. The room was poor standard in general. However there was a kettle and tea and coffee provided. The bed was comfy but the furnishings were dated, the carpet was stained, the surrounding area of the bed I slept in was un clean. Once in bed it was impossible to see the TV because of the room layout. The curtains were hanging off the rails and could be fixed with just a few more hooks. The bathroom was in need of an upgrade. Clean towels were provided each day. It was a disappointing room

• SylviaS569 (4/5): Grim introduction to Kirkwall - This hotel is a very shabby establishment badly in need of a complete makeover. The front door set the tone - dirty, scruffy and marked, This is basically a pub with 6 rooms to let. Our room had a good view over the harbour, but furnishings were old and chipped, not as clean as possible, tea making area with directly under the TV (health & safety issue) - we moved it. The shower was very small and rickety, and base was damaged. A lot of noise from the bar below, often till after midnight. If I had not paid in advance, I would not have stayed.

Surely they know the last flight (if on time) arrives at 7.20? Lounge bar closes at 8. Main bar very noisy. Breakfast very good, but coffee not (Nescafe?). Can they not afford a filter machine?
• Gary (8/5): - Friendly staff, especially in the restaurant which also had great meals. Room was a bit jaded, with view of a wall and low doorway into a tiny bathroom. Parking was a pain with time limits outside and the free space round the back not inspiring confidence about the security of our bikes.

You won't regret it - We didn't stay here for the accommodation but had lunch today so I just have to rate the Steak and Orkney Ale pie and mash... Absolutely 10/10! And very friendly helpful bar/restaurant staff. The restaurant area is lovely and clean. Thanks so much

• fionac925 (2/5): Worst hotel ever!!!! - Worst hotel ever!!!! Do not stay here!!! See photos. Smelly, dirty, mouldy and unsafe. Staff unwilling to assist or help find alternative accommodation. Please don’t book here as you will be very disappointed.
• Helsbels2222 (2/5): if you need a room to sleep forget this place - Do not go here unless everywhere else is booked up. It has a very vibrant bar on the ground floor and if you stay Friday or Saturday night you can guarantee not to get any sleep until about 5am, if you are lucky. The rooms are ok, basic but clean but my main reason for a room was to get some sleep and this was not acheived so nothing else would have made the stay any more appealing. I vowed not to stay here again after my first stay 10 years earlier- where the surly receptionist was not interested in my complaint and i moved to another hotel-but this time work booked it and ive told them never to do so again.
• Scottish134 (4/5): Soo slow - Just had meal in the bar- extremely slow service, never did get plates taken away- had to go to bar to ask for service/sweet menu. Extremely fed up having to wait so long so decided to leave and not have sweet/ coffee, watched guests who came in after us getting served first! Chicken goujons very greasy and chips tasted of oil used to fry fish. Very disappointing as I’d heard the food was usually good. Wouldn’t go back.

• jasonjP1113UP (2/5): Not tourist friendly. - Called into the hotel bar when on honeymoon as hotel website it was popular with locals. This is definitely NOT the case. Very frosty reception from the locals and a few nasty comments. I set a new record for the quickest pint ever and left to another nearby place. My last totally honest review was deleted
• Righdubhmor (8/5): Very welcoming , comfortable but accommodation a little tired - Stayed 2 nights on arriving on Orkney for a short break, really nice welcome and friendly staff in all areas , reception, bar, restaurant and housekeeping. Food was reasonable and pub grub. Room had a great view over harbour and although ready for some modernisation was large, clean and very comfortable. Slight downside was some noise from people outside on street directly below our windows, either smoking or when leaving at closing time. However it was Friday and Saturday nights, so understandable to a degree. Would not stop us returning, it was booked up and unavailable on our return to Kirkwall hence my previous review of disappointing (and more expensive) nearby hotel
• FionaLondon (4/5): Basic hotel which is tired and need of some refurbishment - I stayed here two nights with a colleague and we were both really disappointed with the room. It's not quite the image you see in the photos. My room was small and the bed was awful. The plastic undersheet did not make for a comfortable night. The staff had obviously done what they could but it needs a whole lot of money spent on it. Bathroom was clean but tiny. The kitchen is situated near the rooms so the place smells of food and my room looked out onto a ventilation system. Very expensive for what it is, would not recommend. The staff however, were lovely.
• hmdando (4/5): Don’t believe website - much poorer quality - Short visit first week of August for 2 nights. Had booked a single but didn’t realise it would be an actual single bed. Very small room, very tired with peeling wallpaper, felt very old and worn. Smell on entry was really strong and unpleasant - bleach or some sort of chemical smell. After opening window etc, it didn’t really go for whole visit. Room was opposite kitchens, used for the downstairs bar/restaurant. Really not what you want to see up by the bedrooms and created again food smells up with the bedrooms. Strong smell of fried food outside my room and actually throughout hotel. Nothing was broken, shower worked and small telly but it felt uncomfortable, and smelly. It was also expensive for the quality and size of room. Breakfast was ok, but second day asked for bacon with a college and we book received 1 rasher each, rather than the 2 you would expect. Staff were very friendly and helpful but hotel was of a really low quality and I would not recommend. I would stay self catering if I went back to Orkney.

I spoke with Zoe and she went above and beyond to help accomodate my request to make their day special. Im very grateful and feel she deserves some recognition for her hospitality! Thank you Zoe
• danitC4563OY (10/5): Amazing food - Had some time to kill between ferry and flight, so popped in for some lunch, I have to say, the steak & Guinness pie was absolutely delicious, and the service was fab too :-) Would definitely recommend if you're in Kirkwall and hungry!

• Chilled04 (6/5): Good location - This hotel has an excellent location overlooking the harbour. We had a large room which was very clean although the sheets could have done with an iron. We had the fish and chips for dinner which were very good and the breakfast was excellent. Staff are very friendly. The hotel is a bit old fashioned and badly needs a makeover but for a one night stay it was ideal.
• Road40516110584 (4/5): Overpriced, noisy, tired & not really clean - Good location of the hotel, but thats all of the positive. My room was very noisy due to window to back yard with running ventilation fans. Everything is old and a bit shabby. There is a little tiny tv. The room isn’t really clean: a lot of dust and dirt under the bed. To take a shower in the little bathroom is quite a pain. Too small and wobbly shower cabin with a very primitiv warm water heater. Why wasn’t proper plumbing done? Not worse the high price per night. Far too expensive for such terrible room.
• V6023KYmarym (8/5): Small room, adequate except for thin bedding - Small single room at the back, no view . Simply furnished, bed comfortable with good heating easy to control. Shower good. Only criticism is the quality of the quilt which was to thin. My preference is a cool room with warm bedding to sleep so had to supplement cover with my coat! The food and service were good and staff very helpful Will stay again in a bigger room.

• Verified traveler (4/5): Great location but very dated noisy hotel - Stayed at the hotel Friday Saturday Sunday room allocated(no 1) was over the bar area and overlooking bins and smoking shelter. Friday/Saturday bar open until after one in the morning and was very noisy. I would say the room is not suitable to be used at weekends. The room itself is very dated and dull with badly stained carpet. On the plus side staff were friendly and polite.Sadly won’t be staying here again.

• Mark (10/5): A great place to stay - The St. Ola Hotel is very convenient with easy access to the harbor and shops in Kirkwall. The staff were friendly and helpful, offering input on the best places to see on the island.
• Cato (8/5): Hyggelig på Kirkwall - Bodde en natt i forbindelse med jobb. Hadde Superior dobbelt rom. Helt OK. Vannkoker med Kaffe og Te på rommet, påfyll av Kaffe, sukker, melk tilgjengelig i gang, veldig bra. Liker en fordrive tiden med å se TV, var det kun mindre skjerm, så glem å se TV fra sengen. Veldig hyggelig personale. Bor gjerne der igjen om jeg skulle behøve overnatting i Kirkwall. Merk, Resepsjon er nattestengt så du får nøkkel til ytterdør sammen med romnøkkel.

The Hotel, things to see, public transport, people in general, had a ruddy good tie and will most definitely be returning to the Orkneys and using the same hotel. There’s so much to do and see. • Alice (10/5): Great hotel and good value - This hotel has an amazingly helpful and responsive staff. The room was also very clean and tidy. Access to many local tourist sites was excellent and the site also was a great coordinating point for meeting others arriving on my tour.

• Brian v (8/5): - Historic hotel on the waterfront, nice facade but precious little historical character remains inside. My room had everything I needed but was nothing special. No problems with noise, though it was early in the week. Hard-working and versatile friendly staff. I ate dinner twice in the restaurant, really enjoyed the food, and as a vegetarian it was nice to have a few choices; breakfast was fairly average though. Parking out front was in keen demand and it could be difficult to find a (legal) spot at times.
• Verified traveler (8/5): Prime location but pricey for what it is - This hotel is ideally placed for the centre of Kirkwall. Everything is in walking distance in terms of cafes, restaurants, pubs and local shops. You'll need to have a car or a tour booked to see some of the historic sites on the mainland or other islands of course. Only complaints were the shower didn't have too much pressure and the bed was quite hard. One of our nights was a Friday and there were a lot of folk out in the street quite merry after the pub kicking out time at 1am so we were woken up, it quickly gets quiet though. Just remember it is a 3 star location so the amenities match this, as opposed to the price of the room which we felt was excessive for what it was. Orkney was inclredible though, so we were happy with our stay.
• Verified traveler (8/5): Popular Location - Previous reviews seem accurate. Excellent central location right on the dock, right on a popular strip of eateries and other hotels (with restaurants). This hotel's restaurant was good, too. Yes, it was a bit on the loud side late on a Saturday (other colleagues had same issue at different hotel the same night). Very quiet though on the following Sunday. Consider the day of the week you book. Staff seemed gracious. Very busy on Saturday night. Clean. Would stay again after comparing prices with competitors.

• Verified traveler (8/5): Nice little hotel facing harbour - The St Ola is a nice hotel directly opposite Kirkwall Harbour. The staff were friendly and helpful. The room was nice. The bathroom was small and basic but functional. The breakfast was really nice but the opening window at the weekend was quite short (08:30 - 10:00), particularly as check out was at 10:00. The bar was small and “rustic” but pleasant enough and the beer was well kept. Food in the restaurant was simple “pub grub” but tasty. Overall, a nice little hotel in a great location

• Verified traveler (6/5): Location a Mixed Bag - The location of the hotel is close to city center by the waterfront, easy to walk to restaurants, St Magnus, and Earl's Palace. However, since it is near city center, it was very noisy until at least midnight both nights (music, partying, conversation). This made it very hard to sleep. Angela did an amazing job of making us feel welcome; other staff members were s little glum. The on site restaurant serves breakfast and dinner. The room was clean but the sheets were a bit thread bare.

• Verified traveler (8/5): MG - The room was clean and tidy however, the single room bed quilt was old and sparse, and I had to put my heavy coat on top of the bed to compensate. The walls aren't well insulated as you can hear folk talking on their mobile phones at 0600am! Wednesday night was a quite night throughout, and the staff were very nice. I was surprised to find out that the hotel isn't manned during the night but there is an emergency mobile number to contact which didn't fill me with trust.
• Sheila (8/5): Great Old Hotel facing the Harbour - We loved Hotel Ola for a few reasons. We were tired after a LONG trip from the Yukon and were greeted so very warmly. The room was quaint and clean. Our window faced the harbour and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Upon arriving at our next Hotel in Kirkwall there was a 'memo' that Ola had called and we had forgot two items in our room. Service PLUS in my eyes. We LOVE the 'older' places with character and charm.
• linds (4/5): Close to ferries - As a solo traveler I didn't really feel safe in this hotel. I was there on a Saturday night and it was extremely noisey due to the pub. Up to 1:30 am people were yelling and arguing outside my window. My room was also over the pub washroom and I could hear the door slamming and the hand drier going. Up to 2:30 there was door slamming and it was at least 3:30 when I got to sleep. Also as I was leaving the fire alarm went off. All the staff were outside and hadn't bothered about the guests!

• Anne (6/5): - Room was airless & stuffy as window couldn't be open because of the smells from the kitchen. Their 'refurbished' bathroom was a joke - shower is made for very short supermodels … no room for ordinary folk!! The advertised complimentary "onsite self parking" does not exist … it's first in best dressed in a busy street outside several pubs!! Also the advertised "laundry facilities' are not what they would seem - they take your items for washing … charging a couple of £'s for EACH T-shirt or jeans etc!!

• Verified traveler (10/5): Right in the heart of Kirkwall - This hotel was newly remodeled from a historic building. It is across from the docks and around the corner from town. All staff were very warm, welcoming and helpful. The food at the hotel was delicious and there was a large menu to choose from.

However, as the hotel bar seem to be popular and has with bands playing several nights per week it was impossible to sleep until the bar closed at 1-2 am. When pointing this out to the staff they only shrug their shoulders and seemed uninterested.

• Kathy (8/5): A good clean hotel with plenty of ammenities - Whilst the website said that we may get some noise from the bar on Friday and Saturday nights (which we expected) we didn't expect or get warned that a band would be playing directly under our room until 1am on Saturday. Good music but impossible to get to sleep until they'd finished
• Angela (8/5): Town centre and Bay View - The room itself was terrific: two beautiful windows with a view of the bay harbor. Nicely furnished and the private bath was roomy as far as inns were concerned. The thing that you'd have to deal with is the fact that there is no elevator, and that the rooms were above a pub and restaurant. It's noisy with general pub revelry and music.... and also the slamming doors at the stairwell landing when people go up and down the stairs. I was there on a Sunday and Monday evening, and both nights were noisy. When you open the windows for fresh air, you'd have to also deal with the people/chattering that poured out of the pub and smoked along the sidewalk. The people who ran the inn were nice. They primarily worked at the pub or restaurant, which means that when you need to check in or check out, you'd go to the bar to find them (the reception desk is not staffed). The people themselves were great - friendly and helpful. Any questions we had, they answered. We also got to leave our suitcases in their locked office after checkout - our ferry wasn't leaving until the evening, so we appreciated not having to haul them around as we wandered the city.
• John (6/5): An OK Hotel - Stayed for 2 nights. This was one of the few rooms we could book due to the St Magnus Festival being on during our visit. The room was a standard twin but was tiny and with an odd layout. The ensuite while very new was also very small. Best things about the hotel were its position on the harbour front, street parking outside the front door, a very good staff and a good standard of cleanliness.
• Ruth (10/5): Great view of harbor - Great view of harbor and we spent time watching the ferries and fishing boats. Located in the center of Kirkwall near restaurants and pubs. A bit of noise from bars on Saturday night but it quit by 10. The staff was helpful and willing to do things like let us leave luggage when we arrived early.
