Guest Reviews
- Jack (10/5): Not my first pick but happy overall - Good but cheap n old a lot of character CANNOT beat location
- Rachel (8/5): Decent hotel - Small, older hotel that was run by an older couple. They we're very nice, but didn't speak any English, so may want to know a.few phrases of French if you're traveling here. Room was small and outdated, but no major issues. Also, no elevator, just a spiral staircase. However, location was FANTASTIC and value overall for the cost was great, in my opinion. I would definitely stay here again based on those reasons alone.
- Jeff (6/5): - Great area - close to Port.
Room is tiny though - be prepared to walk on the bed to get to the window.
Good for 1 night - iffy for longer than that.
- Scarlet (8/5): Nice hotel close to Marseille port - Beautiful, cute and quaint little hotel. Right in front of the Opera building. Single/twin share room was very small, but comfortable for one person. Very welcoming and polite hotel staff.
- kungshatt (10/5): Very friendly hotel with good price - Stayed during the Marseille marathon weekend.
The hotel was very centrally located and with a very affordable price. It had everything we needed and the breakfast was good.
A special thanks to the staff who let us keep the room longer so we could take a shower after the marathon.
- G879AWmaryh (6/5): Good location close to Vieux Port - Great location near to the Opera and within walking distance of interesting places in the old town and less than 5 minutes walk to the Vieux Port. However, no lift and steep stairs make this impractical for anyone with mobility problems. Décor in need of a update – fresh paint, carpet etc …would help but do not impact on the functionality per se.
The room itself was ok – the bed reasonably comfortable, but the bathroom was the smallest bathroom I have ever used (and I am taking into account those on sleeper trains in Egypt and ferries in Greece). The entire facility (shower, sink, WC) would fit inside the floor space covered by my (standard sized) bath at home. Also, the bedroom floor sloped rather strangely ……
The staff were pleasant, and no English spoken from what we could ascertain (not an issue for us, but it may be for some) and you can have breakfast for an additional cost if you wish (we passed on this as there are numerous cafes close by and we prefer to do this, so cannot comment on what was offered).
Nice views from a front facing room over the Opera house and square, but if you have concerns about stairs and are of a larger build, you may find bathrooms impractical - we were in Room 12, others may be more spacious.
For the price and location, it was ok. We like staying in older style places but for us, this just didn’t really work
- Verified traveler (8/5): Consigliato - Posizione comoda, personale gentilissimo e disponibile.
- 879laurelf (6/5): Average hotel - The hotel is in a good location (near the Port) but it is a very loud area. There seems to be a nightclub or something next door with very loud music playing until 4am. There is also a strong smell of cigarette smoke in the rooms.
The rooms are clean and serviced daily but the bathroom is very tiny. The shower area is fine but I think a fat person would have trouble using the toilet.
Also, the WiFi wasn't working at all.
Three stars for location and cleanliness, but bring earplugs.
Bref a éviter
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Greer centrally located hotel, no elevator so have to carry luggage but otherwise great place. Clean rooms with AC and very nice staff
Hotel tres bien situe, personnel gentille.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Spotless basic hotel in excellent location - Stayed here several times in past couple of years. Ideal location by Opera next to Vielle Port. Spotlessly clean room, towels and bed linens. Basic room but does come with A/C, TV and small fridge. city view of Opera very pleasant.
On reviendra!
- Allan (2/5): Its a Dump - The room was shocking, small, dingy, the paint was falling off the walls. The air conditioner made a racket all night. I had to tie the shower up with dental floss to hold it in place. It's above a bar that thumps music till sun up. You would need to pay me to let my dog stay there. I Will bet that no-one from Hotels.com has ever stayed there. Don't waste your money.
- Björn (8/5): Bra läge, rent men slitet - Hotellet uppfyllde helt våra förväntningar.
- gene (4/5): Good location....that's about it - This hotel is in a great location. But don't expect much otherwise. It's an older building and hasn't been kept up particularly well. One important point to note is that you have to climb a lot of stairs to get to your room and it's a circular small staircase where the steps can be very uneven. For some people this isnt a big deal for other people this can be a dealbreaker so be warned.
The room I had faced an alley of sorts and I basically got no real sunlight in the room.
They haven't really invested much in the place.
It wasn't terrible. And like I said the location was fantastic. And the price wasn't bad. But don't expect a lot otherwise.
- siarotach (4/5): Euro 2016 - We travelled to Marseille for Euro 2016. We booked the room 3 months in advance and 1 month before I emailed to the hotel to move reservation to one day later and they confirmed my request, I called them to reconfirm and they assured that reservation is done, but I could feel that people there don't speak much English and I was worried till the day we came. And the day we arrived we found out that they cancelled our booking, coz we didn't come the day before. So they didn't move the date of reservation, moreover they cancelled it. I really was very upset, that at that busy time we were left without a shelter. So if you don't speak french better don't book this place coz they don't understand English.
- Kjartan Due (8/5): Very well located- very fair price - Very well located- very fair price. We where all happy with our stay.
- Kjartan Due (8/5): Very well located- very fair price - Very well located- very fair price. We where all happy with our stay.
- Shakeel (10/5): Great location to stay in Marseille - Although my room was on 4th Floor, I didnt mind climbing four flights as the view was good and the room quite and comfortable.
- _chaka_82 (6/5): Good location and small room, would stay there again - I stayed there in June for one night. I had a half day in Marseille before leaving for Toulouse so because of the short time I was able to spend there I wanted to book a relatively cheap room in the Old Harbor (Vieux Port) close to the bars and restaurants and everything.
The hotel is at a little square right next to the Opera just 3 minute walk from the Vieux Port (metro station as well). There is a huge choice of bars and restaurants nearby and even the main train station (Gare Saint-Charles) is 15-20 min walk away. I walked there in the morning to catch my train.
The room was really small and a little bit out-dated but really fited my needs. I only went there to sleep. AC worked well. Wifi worked well and was free. Did not have breakfast there as I left very early in the morning.
The staff was really nice and helpful. It seemed to be a family run business.
If you want a room in the heart of the city close the everything and you are not planning to spend the whole night in your hotel room then Hotel Relax is a good choice.
- S2325FFdavidw (10/5): Great Location, Great Value - Four of us stayed in this hotel 4 times during June and July (each time, our group had one double room and two singles). Of course, the rooms are fairly small but the location is fantastic and the hotel is very, very clean. Everything works perfectly, including the very efficient aircon and the fast and reliable WiFi. The couple and their daughter who run the place are extremely friendly and helpful - they went out of their way to ensure that each of our stays was excellent. We felt totally at home here. Lastly, the price of the rooms is very, very competitive - this hotel is truly great value.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Small room - awkward experience - We stayed one night during the football Euro and had the bad luck to be woken up 06.30 brutally by a lost drunken polish football fan who repeatedly knocked on our door and yelled something not understandable. The place was merely ok for one night, but frankly, the only good thing was the location and the french oldies by the so-called front desk. Should be cheaper rates for this standard.
- Philip (6/5): One night stay during the euro,s. - Located about 5 minutes walk from Vieux Port Metro set in a small square off the main port area. The location is excellent for visiting this part of Marseille with plenty of photographic opportunities to be had in the port area.
The hotel was very busy due to the Euro football competition. Although the hotel is basic it represented good value for money on the location alone.Thankfully the hotel has air conditioning which made my stay more pleasant. The staff were most welcoming.
- Patricia (6/5): enjoyed stay but very noisy - Owners where very friendly, near the shops and other sightseeing attractions,
The only problem it was very noisy was kept awake the entire night by city noises.
- blablabla704 (2/5): Just terrible - Location is great, just 10 minutes from Old port but I'm not sure is it worth it.
Owners are also nice but they live on the first floor and you don't always feel comfortable interrupting them in their daily life.
Room, linen and bathroom were clean but there's mold everywere.
Arrival - we were welcomed by owner who informed us that room we booked (Double room) is too small for two persons and asked us to move to bigger room which is more expensive.
She doesn't really speak English and we were tired and just wanted to get in the room so we agreed.
ROOM- Room and bathrooms were cleaned but there is mold everywhere and holes in the bathroom and rooms wall.(photos attached)
Bed has nice matress but it's more like a couch, matress moves around as well as the whole bed. It doesn't have bed frame and there's tiles on the floor so it just moves around the room. Bed is also very small, your legs hang over the bed while you sleep
Floor is strangely skewed as it's a bit collapsed under the weight of the furniture.
Rooms are not soundproofed at all, so you can hear everything happening inside and outside of the hotel.
There's hole in the room wall, I guess someone hit it with something and owners never bothered to patch it.
There's no real closet, just hangers and shelves. The whole room looks like it was made from old pieces of furniture collected around, everything is worn and old.(not in the vintage style way, more 'we don't bother to change anything' way)
Fridge was switched off and it stands on sloping bedside table.
Safe was opened and locked, so that can not be used.
WiFi is free, but it's very sketchy.
Bathroom – toilet bowl is moving, it's not really attached to the floor. There's a hole in the wall next to the toilet. Mold on all metal parts and shower tiles.
Although you can see it's cleaned, everything looks very dirty and disgusting
There's a lot, a lot of mosquitoes in the room so even if you manage to fall asleep from the noise and falling of the bed, they will wake you up.
Overall, only good thing is location but there's a lot of nice bnb's around for the same price so I'm not sure is it worth it. We were around the town the whole day so only thing we needed at the end of the day is clean and comfortable bed and shower and this hotel is just too badly taken care of.
Could be nice if the owners make effort to restore a little.
- Raymond (8/5): Great Hotel on a budget - Fantastic
Bad in sehr veralteten Zustand.
- Matt (8/5): Great location at a budget price - As a solo traveller, I stayed for 5 nights in a single room. The hotel owners were friendly and helpful. My room was very small, but adequate for me. It was clean and comfortable. There were approx. 50-80 stairs up to my room on 4th floor. View of opera house was nice. Hotel location was excellent. Close to the port, shops, cafes, restaurants, etc. If you are looking for budget-style accommodation in a great location, you should consider Hotel Relax. Don't expect deluxe decor. It's all about location and basic, functional accommodation with upper room views adding a nice touch!
- BaghdadSuzanne (8/5): Better than expected - The location is perfect and my room gave on to the square in front of the Opera, so there was no building ten cms in front of my window and plenty of glorious sunlight. I was grateful to have a double bed with a hard mattress which makes a change, sheets and towels very clean. Very good value for money. The room was a tad tired but had everything I needed, as my aim is not to spend too much time in the room. Charming owners, very willing and friendly. I would definitely return.
- Carol (6/5): Older Hotel But Great Location - Hotel Relax is in a wonderful location to see the sights of Marseille. It is in the Old Port, which means that it is an old building and there is no elevator. The walls are quite thin and we could hear the people/TV next door at all hours. The Wifi didn't seem to work, either. That being said the couple who run the hotel are very nice and offered us a beverage while our room was being prepared. There is a certain charm to the public room and our room was unusual in that it offered two different sleeping areas, each containing a TV, shower and wash basin. Although both areas were small, together they made a larger room than we would have had otherwise.
- colin225 (8/5): Clean hotel, well situated. - Rooms cleaned daily, friendly staff, good price, brilliantly situated.
- EvaJ390 (8/5): Excellent location and good value - Relax hotel is next to the Opera and close to the Vieux Port. Many restaurants and bars nearby, everything within walking distance. It's a small family-run hotel, 20 rooms, 3 of them have separate beds. Rooms are small, clean, with fridge, but no kettle, bathrooms with bidet, comfortable beds, excellent wi-fi in rooms, aircon. Paid about 65 euros for two small rooms. The french breakfast costs 8 euros. Close to main attractions. Very friendly family and Ali is an excellent host. No elevator and quite steep stairs. It was nice and quiet during most nights, but there is a disco nearby which is open three nights a week and played very loud music until 5 o clock in the morning. We were not so bothered by it as we closed the windows. Good value for money and we would definitely come back!
- Raymondkoh (10/5): Great location and friendly service - Was out walking about while waiting for 1 of my 2 rooms to be ready. When we returned, the hotel owner shifted our lugguages to a bigger room at no extra charge. The hotel owners were friendly too. Highly recommended.
- 137alanc (10/5): Location, location, location - The previous reviews have said it all. This small hotel run by the most friendly family has to be your choice if you want to stay in Marseilles and avoid the big chains. Could note get closer to the harbour without costing the earth (60-65 Euros and worth every cent), 2 minute pleasant walk, and close to the Metro or walkiing distance to the rest of interesting sites. We had a room over looking the opera house and the sqare and was only slightly noisy with the opers cord and later some kids with skate boards but there was no traffic. Breakfast was served in the tint reception but we preferred to wander down to the water front where there are numerous cafes and restaurants.
No negatives to speak of but be prepared to carry your baggage up some tight windy stairs.
Spotlessly clean rooms, and did I mention how friendly and helpful every one was.
Wi-Fi was a bit sketchy so when we were having problems booking the next hotel on our Ipad the owners allowed us to jump on the reception computer.
We only had limited tome in Marseilles so could not get to see everything we wanted to but from the Hotel Relax everything was close. Recommend you take the tourist train from the harbour front and walk around the front to the cathedral.
Can't wait to get the chance to return and we would definately stay at the Relax.
- josepho203 (10/5): Perfect For Me - A small Family run Hotel, Sweet and friendly owners,
In a perfect location, Right in Opera Square. I had a quiet room with a view of the Opera House.
Lovely reception area, where they also serve breakfast. I did not have breakfast there, but I wish I did. I was leaving too early in the morning.
- Matisse08 (10/5): Excellent location and friendly staff - The location is perfect for walking to most places of interest. The rooms are clean and well appointed. Internet connections are available. Excellent value for money. The rooms that look out on the opera square are an added bonus, though can be a bit noisy if people congregate in the square. The family who run the hotel are very friendly and helpful.
- donovanu (10/5): Authentic French Accommodation in the heart of Marseille - This hotel is a real gem. The rooms are clean and the staff are friendly. Above all, the price is very reasonable. My friend and I shared a twin room for 65 euro, only 3 euro more than a dorm room in a nearby hostel, and we were within walking distance of the main district in Marseille, the old port, the metro, all buses, shops and restaurants. We never had to walk more than 500 metres beyond our hotel for the entire week before we were at a bus, metro, restaurant or pub that we wanted to go to. The view from our window was spectacular. We overlooked the Opera Municipal sqaure. Highly recommended. Breakfast was not included but the owner recommended a lovely nearby boulangerie for croissants and coffee. One word of warning for elderly travellers, there is no lift in the hotel and our room was on the 4th floor so you would need to be fairly fit to navigate the stairs. Other than that the place couldnt have been more perfect.
- Lucie415 (10/5): small but mighty - Our room looked right out to the grand and beautiful Opera house and the opera square. Perfectly situated. Lovely family running the place. Simple with teeny bathrooms, but each room comes with a small fridge, tv, safe and hair dryer. Highly recommended for the location and the price.
- Vinceslu (8/5): Convenience and hospitality - I am very happy with the choice of hotel, especially its location and price. It is not luxurious but comfortable, especially for business travelers. Do not come here for a romantic getaway. It is too small (& no room for bags). It is really best for a single traveler. The stairs make it inconvenient for disabled or elderly, but for most persons it is manageable. I personally found the staff/owners very helpful, kind and generous. I suppose if you are rude to them, they will respond(?), but I would recommend this hotel and would stay there if ever I return to Marseille.
- PatriciaA956 (10/5): Charming, well priced and ideally located!! - Some colleagues and I spent 8 days attending a conference at this charming, family run hotel. Even though its a small place, it was clean and comfortable and within walking distance of everything, inluding the Metro, buses, pharmacy, restaurants and bars. I love the fact that it was five minutes away from the bustling and colourful Port. On returning from our conference daily, it felt like coming home. Even though the owners Al and Auria are not fluent in English, they were extremely helpful. On my final day, I contracted food poisoning (I ate elsewhere) and had to stay in my room beyond checkout. I was not charged anything extra, which I thought was very generous of them. True there are stairs to climb and its very narrow, but we asked for rooms on the first level. If you have lots of luggage, the rooms will be a tight fit. If you are looking for luxury, go elsewhere. If however you want easy access, clean and comfortable, then this is the place. If I return to Marseille, this is where I will stay.
- AllenT_12 (2/5): Terrible hotel... Avoid at all cost - We stayed here one night... We were sent here due to an issue with a booking at a different hotel... The owners do not speak ANY English... they seemed friendly though... They keep your room key when you leave... I don't like that... the rooms was small and dirty... the shower was comically small... I would never recommend this place to anyone... The stairs to the room were exhausting... and you have to ring a bell to get in at night... the owners are also the residents... the only positive was the location was nice... 3 blocks to the water and about a 10 min walk from the train station.... I would avoid this place...
- RL358 (8/5): Good value and location in Marseille Old Port - Positive: price and location -- right in the city center, 2 blocks away from the old port, facing the Opera square. The owner and staffs are friendly.
Be aware that it’s an old building with no elevator. Our room facing the square is quite small, but with this price, we were ok with our one night staying.
