Each classic room has a double or twin bed, desk, chair and ensuite. Some of these rooms were the servants’ quarters when the hotel was a prestigious private house, and others were the nuns’ bedrooms and offices from the previous century.
You may find there are lots of stairs, or that the view is restricted, or there may be some minor noise from the working areas of the hotel. However each room holds its own specific charm – and they are all designed with comfort in mind, with four-star facilities.

Guest Reviews
- F6979JZhelenb (8/5): Every 10 years - I surprised my husband with an over night stay here for our 20th wedding anniversary, as we got married here on 20/5/06. We stayed in the same suite that we did that night.
The hotel has been updated since our wedding, and since we came back for our 10th anniversary, too.
Everywhere is clean, and comfortable.
Signs of wear and tear on most of the carpets, sadly, but this will be a huge expense to replace so it’s understandable why it’s not been rectified…however, if I were looking to book for a wedding now I’d be put off by it. Thread bare in places and dark/grubby/wrinkled in others.
A few areas just need a touch up, like scuffs on the walls in our grand suite: when you’re paying the prices you expect 100%.
We had a complimentary cream tea outside, the nicest scones I’ve ever had! Compliments to the baker!! Had to ask for the tea though, as this didn’t appear to be coming with the scones.
Cornish tea and coffee served here, excellent and tasty.
Sadly a lack of staff at meal times led to waiting around, and one of the staff on at breakfast was very dismissive and didn’t make eye contact when serving us, made no conversation and didn’t smile when we greeted him. My husband commented he seemed to be in a daze, maybe ill? So I hope he is ok.
We will be back for another cream tea one day soon, and to stay again in another 10 years!
Thank you for the lovely touches of gold petals on the bed, and wine in our room, too, with a very nice greeting card as well.
- mark (9/5): Comfortable bolthole - Good quality hotel, comfortable room, nice surroundings and good food. some communal areas looking a little tired
- jonathan (10/5): - Everything Nothing
- colinbN2776XM (4/5): Lack of response to persistent electrical problem - Despite several promises by staff, an issue remained unresolved for my whole week's stay. For a good quality hotel charging the rates that they do, this was unacceptable. Our extractor fan was not working, meaning the bathroom quickly filled with steam. I reported it on morning 1 and was told by reception someone would investigate. They did not, so I reported again on morning 2, but still no response. On morning 3, I was told a member of the maintenance team would investigate, which they did. I was told an electrician would be bringing a new fan that afternoon. Three days later it was still not fixed and we departed after a week with the situation unresolved. I complained on checking out and received an apology but no explanation for the delay or compensation. What made it worse was that my sister and husband, who were staying in a separate room, reported that their extractor fan was on continuously and they were unable to switch it off! It seems The Alverton has an electrical issue it is reluctant to sort. A shame because all other aspects of the stay were satisfactory to good.

- Katharina (10/5): Jeder Zeit wieder - Alles Nichts
- Jojo (6/5): Could be great with a bit more effort - Lovely building, quiet double bedroom at the back of the building, great shower. Really slow staff response both on booking in and even slower at breakfast the following morning. We were not the only guests having to seek out staff to place a breakfast order. Floor manager needed. Staff were polite & friendly when approached.
- Suzy (9/5): -
- Dawn (8/5): Beautiful setting - Beautiful setting, walking distance into Truro centre and Hall of Cornwall. Comfortable bed, amazing shower. Bar staff worth their weight in gold. Reception staff very helpful. Breakfast let the side down, staff didn't seem to like mornings! 1st morning paid extra for cappuccino, which was cold. 2nd morning had a bitter tasting cafetiere. Food was of a good standard. Only 1 chair in the bedroom.
- David (10/5): -
- Jean-Marc (9/5): - Très bien. Une toute petite chose pourrait apporter un plus. Améliorer les choix "boulanger" et laitages au niveau du buffet petit déjeuner
- Lisa (10/5): Amazing time seeing family with exceptional staff - Catered for our needs exceptionally well Our room was up down up down and mattress wasn’t brilliant.
- Ian (10/5): Luxury, character hotel with good service and quality food - Lovely place full of character. Friendly staff, food of a very high quality if a bit pricy. Not a dislike as such but I would have expected guest bath robes in rooms.
- Sir Stephen (8/5): Mindfulness atmospheric Hotel in centre of Truro - Wonderful atmospheric Hotel With a real sense of style. Definitely the place to stay in Truro. lovely staff.
- Annemieke (9/5): - Fijne kamer, heerlijk eten.
- Gareth (10/5): Amazing stay, will definitely go again. - Amazing venue with comfy accommodation, great food and staff! Nothing
- Michael (9/5): -
- dereksO3069MP (10/5): Excellent hotel - This is the best dog friendly hotel you can find. Nicely located, the staff could not do enough to help and food in the restaurant was excellent.bar staff super friendly. Would definitely stay there again .so would Dolly our dog
- Keith (10/5): Lovely hotel and will be coming back when we can - It is a superb hotel thanks Everything was very good a better choice of cereal for breakfast would be a plus.
- Mark (7/5): -
- Nic (10/5): - Great staff. Super friendly and helpful. Amazing choice for breakfast. Relaxing ambience and grounds.
- Shelley (9/5): Overall very good in all areas and will visit again. Have already recommended lunch and hotel to ot - Set luncheon was excellent. both in taste, presentation and price.
Room lovely, bathroom great, though as plug in middle of bath, tends to drain water, if laid on.
Disappointed that bed was only a double size, when there was ample room for a king size bed to fit.
Loved views of treetops from all windows. Bigger bed and shower temperature easier to alter.
- wish-I-was-Trevone (10/5): Nice relaxing place to stay - On business in Truro, neede somewhere for one night, with a preference to avoid a soulless chain. The Alverton certainly didn’t disappoint, traditional historic building, modern decor, ample parking, great breakfast, fab staff and most bizarrely a feeling I was in the middle of the countryside but actually a very short walk to the town centre.
Would recommend as a characterful alternative to the big chains for a business stay, and equally would return with the familly.
- Vacation14392872067 (6/5): B&b for one night - The hotel is wonderful a lovely building but after paying £269 for b&b we did expect the breakfast to be of high quality we sat down at 850am and didn't get our drinks when ordered for 20 minutes then we waited a further 50 minutes for two smoke salmon bagels (no cooking needed and one poached egg hashbrowns, and two slices of hogs pudding which was so over cooked i couldn't eat it . This has put us off from staying again.
- katebN9566UL (10/5): Welcoming, friendly and helpful - We love staying at the Alverton, its clean, quiet and the staff are always very welcoming and friendly. Its become an annual treat when we attend the Truro Rugby Club awards weekend.
- Giuseppina (10/5): A relaxing overnight stay in Truro, excellent choice -
- KWood72 (10/5): Best stay cation ever! - One of the loveliest stays I have ever had! Fabulous room up in the trees very central for Truro, staff couldn't do enough and the food was not only very reasonably priced but beautiful and so so tasty. Can't recommend this hotel enough a real Cornish gem thank you
- miriammN5874KH (10/5): A Perfect Stay! - A lovely hotel set in beautiful grounds. Our room was spacious and perfect for us, the breakfasts were excellent and the one evening meal we took was delicious and good value. The staff were friendly and efficient.
All in all an ideal place to stay within easy reach of Cornwall's north and south coats.
- Andy (10/5): Great stay in Truro - Great location felt rural but easy reach or city centre and theatre etc. walking or taxi if you have mobility issues, less than £5 back. The staff were great and really cared and were supportive whoever is doing training has got it right. Even if something small was wrong, they apologised and rectified the situation which is all you want. Well done for restoring my faith in the hospitality industry!! It is so beautiful and luxurious ( and smells so good!!) There were a few small imperfections that stood out, that detracted. large Carpet stains in both our rooms ( maybe not so easy to fix) and scratched walls in places which would be easy to touch up but stood out. Still loved it though and would not hesitate to go back
- Guest (9/5): - It was a lovely surprise to find pancakes on the breakfast menu. I also enjoyed the granola and choice of fruit juices. Didn't realise that the courtyard rooms were in a separate building with no lift.
- Alison (9/5): -
- Tim (9/5): -
- Jeffrey (5/5): Not very enjoyable and I felt the whole place was feeling very tired. - A very impressive old building with beautiful gardens and large rooms. The bedroom and bathroom were very spacious. The bedrooms were not cleaned very thoroughly and in the entire week our room was not vacuumed once. The beds were not made properly and glasses were not washed. Towels were not changed even when they were left in the bath for changing. There were big stains on the carpets and chairs in both the bedroom and the dining room/bar areas. The staff were not helpful or friendly and the food in the restaurant was very average to, on one occasion, terrible! Breakfast a-la carte table was not replenished and guests had to ask for it to be done.
- Nele (10/5): Aangenaam - Mooi oud gebouw, omgeven door groen. Goede bedden, mooie kamer.
- Dawn (10/5): - Beautiful hotel, staff were very friendly and we had everything we could have needed plus some nice extra touches. Very clean room and everywhere smells like you're walking into a spa -wonderful! Delicious breakfast in the morning, with great choices and very accommodating to preferences and requirements. Would definitely stay again, and will be recommending to friends and family.
- Evelyn (9/5): -
- Wilko (9/5): - We are regulars here it like a home from home always a pleasure and food is great. The only think that could improve this hotel would be a gym with a spa
- Kathy (10/5): Staff service all excellent - Every thing Nothing
- dtaylo (10/5): Great hotel in Truro - We had to travel to Truro and booked into a hotel that was not to standard. Having arrived late and a long weekend we needed somewhere acceptable to stay. I called this hotel and the receptionist couldn't have been more helpful and understanding. She got us sorted and settled and despite the late hour arranged a delicious room service. The hotel room food and service was superb. To make the stay more memorable on checkout our family emergency was remembered and was the first thing we were asked when we went to checkout was how we were and how our family member was? A very personal and appreciated gesture from the ladies in reception. We will definitely return and cannot recommend this hotel highly enough.
- Claudia (4/5): Very disappointing given the price point and alluring images. - Lovely building and a nice sized room even though the furniture was old fashioned. Bonus having two bathrooms and a good view from the large windows. Food on the whole was sub-par with a very poor breakfast selection and quality. On two of the three mornings of our stay, the bought-in bulk fruit salad and fruit juice were actually off. The porridge looked grey/green in colour and was inedible, 'coffee' was undrinkable and staff were incredibly poor at attention to detail (like ensuring the right cutlery was available on the table and that the crockery was actually clean). In fact it ended up being quite difficult to eat breakfast at the hotel altogether unless one wanted either of the two kinds of soggy looking pastries on offer. A soup we had one evening for a light supper was watery and the waitress asking how it was, when told, was surly and did not offer an alternative. We did enjoy one good eating experience there one afternoon: a scone with jam and cream.
The room was generally clean but the cleaner omitted to remove the empty bottles of water every day so they simply collected on the side, and also left a jug of milk to go off, not thinking to put it back in the fridge or to provide a fresh jug of milk.
We abandoned the idea of having an Irish coffee one evening after staff ignored us sitting in the bar for over ten minutes and when we approached the girl at the bar, seemingly too busy checking paperwork to attend to us, she made up the drinks so hastily that the cream was all mixed in with the coffee and half of it was cold.
It is also worth noting that walking into Truro is not easy nor pleasant, especially in rainy weather, as one has to walk along a busy arterial route and past a petrol station before turning in to a side street.
So all-in-all not a good stay and certainly not worth the price.
- Helena (8/5): -
- Stefania (7/5): Contraddizioni - La struttura è meravigliosa, un edificio d’epoca in un parco molto bello. Parcheggio comodo all’interno.

- jodC2488SU (10/5): A First Class stay - We returned for a night after staying last year.
The hotel is absolutely beautiful, in a great location and the grounds are well kept.
All staff were so polite and the food was of such high quality. The three course lunch is great value for money.
Room was really comfortable and well equipped.
We highly recommend and look forward to a return trip at some point.
- Gareth (9/5): - Ease of access to city and location. Carpets a bit thread worn, but still clean, especially on staircases.
- Alessandro (9/5): - Breakfast, fantastic suite I thought there was more green space outside
- Corinna (9/5): Auf historischen Pfaden unterwegs. - Ein wunderschönes altehrwürdiges Haus. Man fühlt sich in eine andere Zeit versetzt. Nichts
- James (10/5): Fantastic stay in a lovely courtyard room - Peaceful retreat in the middle of a city
- D4433SOtonyl (2/5): Unacceptable security breach of hotel room - I experienced a serious security incident during my stay at The Alverton Hotel.
At approximately 10:15pm, while we were already asleep, someone used a key to open our room door. This was extremely alarming and unacceptable. The person did not enter fully, but briefly opened the door and then left after saying they had taken the wrong key. No proper apology or clear explanation was given at the time.
This explanation is difficult to accept. The hotel uses traditional physical keys, and a “wrong key” should not be able to open another guest’s room. This raises serious concerns about how keys—especially master keys—are controlled and managed.
I immediately called the front desk, but it took around 5 minutes for someone to answer. The response I received was inconsistent and unconvincing. The staff member initially appeared nervous, and although they claimed that keys are securely stored and such access should not be possible, they could not provide a clear explanation as to how my room was opened.
More concerning is that the room door cannot be locked from the inside in a way that prevents external access with a key. This means any staff member with access to a key could potentially enter the room at any time, which is a significant safety concern for guests.
Overall, this incident reflects a serious lapse in security procedures and left us feeling unsafe during our stay. I expect a full investigation, a clear explanation, and appropriate accountability from the hotel.
- Michael (9/5): -
- Louise (9/5): - Location, beautiful garden and character building , spotlessly clean, nice food and comfortable room Noise from busy road all through night- windows are old style single glazed - very beautiful but provide little soundproofing. No air con so window needed to be open as room was quite warm

- Debbie (10/5): A lovely hotel made for a perfect stay convenient for the city but felt like we were in the country - The breakfast was delicious. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. Very comfortable accodation. Nothing at all

- markwA3385XD (2/5): Disappointing - My wife and I booked and prepaid for a three night stay through Booking.com. A few weeks before our trip we had a family bereavement meaning that we had to shorten our trip to two days so that we could return home for the funeral.
We contacted the hotel and asked if we could be refunded the cost of the third night. We were told that would be fine but that we would need approval from Booking.com.
Such approval was sought and obtained from Booking.com. When we arrived to check in at The Alverton the receptionist confirmed that Booking.com had approved the repayment but that it was hotel policy not to issue refunds in cases where prepayment has been made. The receptionist seemed to take considerable enjoyment from informing us of this.
This was totally at odds with what we had been told when we first contacted the hotel to inform them of the need to amend the booking due to a family bereavement. We felt misled and duped by the hotel.
It's a real shame. I had high hopes that the Alverton would be a great venue for a series of conferences that my company is hosting in 2027 to promote inward investment opportunities for Cornish start up companies and SMEs. We will look elsewhere.

- Virginia (8/5): Comfy but a bit dated but excellent dinner and kindly staff - Well run and staffed English old fashioned hotel. Food very good. Location tricky for walking into central Truro but lovely outlook over garden from main restaurant, room and bar Loud music in bar and restaurant. Ran out of fruit for breakfast!
- Stuart (10/5): -
- Ingo (9/5): -
- J (8/5): Not up to the usual standards - Great location , hotel staff are lovely and the rooms are normally really nice My room was nice but the plug in the bath didn’t work and you could not flush the toilet .
- Paul (8/5): - Great shower, comfy bed Nothing really. Breakfast could’ve been better.
- Jonathan (9/5): -
- Glamerousgran (10/5): Exceeded expectations - The Alverton exceeded our expectations. The reception desk was friendly and very helpful. Went above and beyond to help. Bar was a great place to gather. Food was good. Had breakfast each day. Location perfect for exploring different areas of Cornwall. Highly recommend.
- Kenneth (9/5): -
- Alex (10/5): The Alverton, a royal stay - Staff were very considerate of our comfort and what we wanted out of this holiday. They helped us achieve the comfort we were hoping for. Thank you! I was happy throughout my holiday. I have nothing to complain about.
- Stuart (9/5): -
- Susan (10/5): Had a fantastic stay . Staff were excellent so friendly and helpful. - Perfect location Nothing to dislike
- Claire (10/5): -
- Andrew (8/5): Missions accomplished - Very impressed with the restaurant service. Esp the MDs !! The meals were tasty, colourful and not overwhelming i quantity . . . The stairs were good exercise . . . ?
- Charles (10/5): - Everything was good
- Diane (9/5): Good location, lovely old building - Our room was on the ground floor and was both spacious and comfortable. Location wise it suited us very well as it's just a 15 minute walk to the centre. It's a beautiful old building and the bar is good too although we felt the number of seats were lacking for the size of the hotel. The brasserie staff were attentive at dinner (less so at breakfast). The hand shower was leaky and inadequate.
The overhead shower wasn't great either but guessing that's due to water pressure, old building etc. We had dinner which was pretty good apart from my husband's belly pork which was overcooked and dry. At breakfast our eggs were also hard. We did mention at reception and were informed that we'd be contacted by someone at some point.
- Curiosity690051 (10/5): One of the best hotels in Cornwall - One of the best hotels. Staff are so kind, helpful and very proficient.
Great ambiance and such an interesting building. Rooms well appointed.
Food is delicious, beautifully prepared and cooked, lovely menu.
Thank you to all the staff for making our stay special.
- garethpB638LQ (10/5): Amazing Hotel - Amazing hotel set in beautiful period property. Staff are very welcoming and attentive, restaurant is fabulous and rooms are quiet and comfortable. Great location in the heart of Cornwall. Would definitely stay again!
- Karroo (7/5): Beautiful hotel but staff could be friendlier - Beautiful hotel and the room was very good and very clean. We found the staff all over the hotel not particularly friendly with the exception of one young lady in the breakfast room and the cleaner of our room. The reception staff were not forthcoming with information, we had to ask everything. The breakfast room staff gave the impression they didn't really want to be there. A shame really as it is a beautiful hotel within easy walking distance to the city centre
- Barbara (9/5): We will be back xx - Lovely ambience. Very friendly and efficient staff. Food was excellent thank you 😊
- Jennie (8/5): Lovely welcoming comfortable stay in a great hotel within walking distance to Truro town centre - We stayed in a garden suite and it was lovely, though I’d argue it wasn’t a suite, but rather just a large room. It was spotless, had great lighting a comfy bed and had a lovely free standing copper bath tub in the room, complete with some lovely smelly bath oil. We both slept very well. The bed was squeaky on one side, the shower door wouldn't fully close - but that just me being picky. Neither of those things particularly affected us.

- DEAN (6/5): Probably seen better days , - Good location, well equipped room Creaky floor above . Inconsistent service, breakfast choice limited
- Andrew (10/5): Perfect location, beautiful surrounds, great facilities. - Great location, beautiful surroundings, felt like all bases were covered to achieve a higher standard. Staff were pleasant, professional and polite. The bar had cassis for a Kir Royale!! Great bar food and our room was perfect. We are walking Lands end to John o Groats, so seeing a lot of different accommodation. We are both agreed that so far for us this had been the best for the price we paid, and one we would return to. Many thanks for a great stay. Nothing
- Patricia (10/5): - Good selection on menu for breakfast.
- colin101101 (10/5): Great short break at the Alverton. - Had a great time at the Alverton, never been in a hotel that smelt so nice, staff were all very welcoming and did there best to accommodate requests, but couldn’t supply any sun, well no one’s perfect.
The restaurant was very nice, surrounded by the features of its 200 year history, the food was all very tasty, hot and nicely presented.
Had two Ev charges and lots of parking.
Nice and central to the city and all the shops restaurants and bars 4 minutes drive or a gentle 10 minute walk.
A great base to see the surrounding beach towns 20 minute drive in either direction.
The room was very spacious and well stocked with two tv’s one in each room lots of choice for a hot drink and biscuits.
Well done Alverton, you helped to make my short break very restful and relaxing.
- Emma (8/5): - Fantastic breakfast We seemed to be the first people in the room for a while as it was cold with all radiators turned off
- Gina (9/5): A real treat - Beautiful building and grounds. Really spacious room with great facilities. Friendly, attentive staff and wonderful breakfast.

- Ribs1829 (10/5): "Ticks all the boxes" - Well located within easy walk of the city centre, The Alverton exceeded expectations, as its rare that a property "ticks all the boxes". From the secluded grounds, the well presented and historic property, through to friendly and accommodating staff. Whether as a solo traveller or couple / group, I would definitely recommend the Alverton.
