Guest Reviews
- Rachel (10/5): - Owners very welcoming,
Cottage was clean and everything inside was sufficient.
Loved the farm animals . Nothing not to like.
- Michelle (8/5): -
- Karen (6/5): Beautiful location but cottage needs some extra touches. - It was self catering. Great location on the moors. spotlessly clean. Quiet and tidy. Very close to neighbours when sitting outside who all smoked. Fantastic view if you sat facing the direction past the yard and the farmhouse.
Felt very formulaic as all cottages furnished exactly the same and absolutely no contact with the owners. We enjoyed North Yorkshire and the farm is in a beautiful location and midway between Whitby and Scarborough so great spot. Restaurant meal on site was poor especially the Beef in Plum sauce. So thick and sticky it was almost inedible.
The cottage smelt "doggy" especially in the lounge. We appreciate it is a dog friendly cottage but we had to buy air fresheners. Perhaps if we had a dog with us we would not have noticed this.
The kitchen is small with virtually no free work top to prepare food, only one cupboard actually empty to put our food in. The bread bin was on top of the 6 foot high fridge with nowhere else to put it. It needs a circular washing up bowl for a circular sink! The square one supplied made it very awkward. The kitchen would benefit from pasta bowls, more saucepan lids ( only 1), a working light over the cooker hob and some weighing scales.
The lounge did not have a single coffee table or side table so nowhere to put a drink while you sat in there. The single ceiling light bulb is depressing to have on and the lamp barely shone any light.
The twin bedroom ensuite was lovely except the motion sensor light and fan could not detect movement once you were in the shower or using the toilet! Had to keep waving your arms about especially at night to see what you were doing!
- tracey (10/5): - The cottage was home from home with everything in place. Spotlessly clean and waking up every morning to the sound of the animals was so amazing. Will be booking again hopefully for next year. We loved erverthing
- Stephen (8/5): Family break - The location was excellent. We stayed in a cottage and it was lovely to sit outside on the terrace in the sunshine enjoying the country views.
Breakfast in the Grainary was good. The automatic lights in the bathroom. They kept going out leaving you showering in the dark. Not the best idea and quite dangerous.
Cups and cutlery minimal.
Would have been nice to have shower gel in the bathroom.
We had an evening meal in the Grainary restaurant, it was disappointing. We ordered two sirloin steak meals, expecting a real treat. The steaks were nowhere near 12oz and both had far too much fat on.We did let the staff know.
- Maria (10/5): Wonderful stay in a gorgeous cottage - Beautiful cottage
- Amy (10/5): Beautiful house - Beautiful house in a gorgeous location. The animals were adorable. Staff were friendly. Couldn't of asked for a nicer get away thankyou
- David (9/5): Superb - Lovly place with beautiful views
- David (9/5): Superb -
- Alasdair (10/5): Exceptional - Great cottage, lovely bar and restaurant in the hotel complex with friendly and helpful staff. Middle of countryside location and good dog walks into forest and fabulous for dark skies.
Accommodation was lovely with good enclosed garden to let dog off lead. Great wet room downstairs and set up for people with disabilities if required. Couldn't fault anything
- Sally (9/5): Superb - Quiet location, home from home with the bonus of the hotel next door Nothing
- Zhilin (9/5): Superb - Staff; Location; Facility, basically everything Wifi is a bit weak.
- Michelle (9/5): Beautiful location, lovely cottage! - We loved the size and location of the cottage. We loved staying in the farm with some lovely animals. The staff in the restaurant were very accommodating. There wasn’t enough room for the five of us for Sunday but
They abled us to eat Sunday lunch in our cottage. Food was really lovely.
Well done to all the staff at The Grainary, I Would recommend staying in one of the cottages. The tv didn’t work in master bedroom and shower leaked.
- Jessica (10/5): Exceptional -
- Claire (9/5): Superb -
- John (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mann (9/5): Superb - The cottage was a home away from home. It was just what we needed.
The restaurant food was amazing. Nothing
- Jones (10/5): A perfect stay in a picturesque location - It is cosy and beautiful Nothing
- Brian (9/5): A north Yorkshire Gem! - The scenery was beautiful.

The Cottage was great. I struggle to find anything!
- Kevin (9/5): Superb -
- Kim (10/5): great trip away with the parents - location

- Les (10/5): Can't wait to return! Amazing food, great staff. - Location absolutely stunning
- Hilary (10/5): beautiful peaceful location, excellent food - peaceful location, cleanliness, excellent food n/a
- Lesley (6/5): Reasonably pleasant stay but with a few small amendments could have been a lot better. - Walks from the door for the dogs. Plenty of room for parking. Constant smell from the bonfire and too many flies. Downstairs bathroom constantly wet with no means of clearing the water. The shower was also very difficult to control and not at all easy to switch off. Walls very thin with next door and could hear the conversations. I would suggest a floor cloth in the bathroom and some fly spray.
- Alicia (9/5): We loved it and will be back! -
- Christine (10/5): - We had a lovely stay with our granddaughters. Cowslip cottage was ideal for us. The girls loved having their private bathroom. Everything was spotless, beds comfy in fact couldn't have asked for more. The girls loved being with the animals and in the play area - we had to drag them off to go into Scarborough! So peaceful if all you need is a rest.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Lovely place - Lovely self catering holiday, everything you could need supplied
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived. It felt so homely and comfortable and very well set up.
- wing Chiu Anthony (8/5): - Nice cottage to stay, like to go again next year
- Christopher (10/5): A Peaceful Retreat Near The North Yorkshire Coast - The Grainary Farm Stay is only a fifteen minute drive from the Scarborough seafront, but is nestled in an incredibly tranquil valley in the moors of North Yorkshire. Whether you are looking for somewhere to base yourself while visiting the coast, or somewhere to relax in peace for a few days, this bed and breakfast should be perfect. It is also very dog friendly and the people running the B&B are very friendly. Breakfasts are good quality and pretty generous, and unusually for a rural location the WiFi is excellent. Rooms are spacious and ours had a door direct to the outside which made getting luggage in and out really simple. Our only issue was that our room was rather warm, even with the heating off, but given the warm weather generally this wasn't much of a surprise. If we end up back in the area, we will definitely be checking back here to see if a room is available.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Really pleasant staff who made us very welcome. Lovely location, wish we had more time to explore.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Overall it's a lovely accommodation beautiful surroundings, fantastic breakfast great choice
- David (10/5): - Really friendly staff, the room was very clean, breakfast was very nice, breakfast times could be longer (eg 8.00-10.00), the times are 8.15-9.15.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Primrose cottage - Lovely cottage, the photos don't do it justice. It was very spacious and very comfortable. We will be back!
- Hazel (10/5): Lovely four day break. - Lovely hosts, food plentiful at breakfast and at evening meal. Bedrooms the hosts have got so many homely touches in there it would be hard to pick some. We liked the wee tables, the touch lights, plenty milk (not like chain hotels) as well as tea and coffee. Spacious room. Brilliant views from the conservatory and the lovely dogs who like a stick or a ball thrown. Lovely large lounge to sit in and in our case we played the family games. Plenty things to see and do near and far. We would recommend Eden Camp.
- Jason (10/5): Cute little farm - Had a lovely stay at the Grainary Farm. Kids loved the little play ground and all the animals. We left in a hurry and accidentally left behind a fit bit. The kind ladies at the farm found it and are sending it in the post. Very much appreciate the effort to go above and beyond to return the item. Thank you!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Friendly farm stay - Very relaxed and friendly guest house. Ideal for young families. Good quality breakfast. Only problem we had was known lack of water pressure affects the shower. The owners let you know it's a problem on arrival but we found it unusable.
- susan (8/5): - we have just returned from a lovely stay at the Grainary, the surrounding area is beautiful and the staff were friendly, the breakfast was very good the only downside was the rooms are a bit dated but quite clean.
- Mark (10/5): Excellent, comfortable, clean, great friendly host - One of the best mid week breaks we have had in a long time. Was very welcoming when we arrived. Location was outstanding.
- Nick (10/5): - Lovely place set in acres of rolling hillsides.. Very misty on the 2 days we visited but nevertheless a truly lovely place to stay.
- Duggie (10/5): - Beautiful setting and reasonable priced with a good breakfast
- paul (8/5): EASTER BREAK - nice freindly staff and hotel .. a lovely break,, need to go back in the summer
- Elaine (10/5): Beautiful view and fabulous welcome - I can't recommend the grainery enough. The welcome you receive on arrive is amazing. The food and the views are to die for. The room was very cosy and well appointed. As a wheelchair user the room was well thought out and the wet room was amazing.
We loved the animals especially Bess, Blue and Lolly the farm dogs. They love a good fuss and were always bringing you toys to throw. The grainery has a real family atmosphere and is the gem of Harwood Dale.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Lovely family break, in a beautiful location. Only drawback is that the restaurant is shut over Winter and I didn't see this mentioned on the website.
- Michael (8/5): Home away from home with a view to die for. - This is a great place to stay with stunning views. The location is great for trips to Scarborough/Whitby or to walk round the local area. The service was fantastic and couldn't do enough for you. Our daughter loved the place from the games room to the farm land to wander round.
We would definitly stay here again!
- nicola (10/5): - Wish we had know about this wonderful family friendly spot when our daughter was younger ,perfect accommodation including indoor games barn ,outdoor play area and friendly farm animals combined with breath taking landscape and yummy breakfast. We will definitely try to stay again
- Verified traveler (10/5): Immaculate cottage in beautiful location - Beautifully located on a farm around 7 miles out of Scarborough with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. The cottage was immaculate and very well presented, with excellent amenities. It was very useful having a play area for our children, who also enjoyed playing with the owners' dogs ! Having a cafe / restaurant on site was also extremely useful. Would definitely book again !
- Jarrod (10/5): We didn't want to leave! - We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Grainary, the owners and staff were friendly and welcoming, the surroundings were beautiful and tranquil and it was ideally placed for Whitby and Scarborough. We will definitely return!
- john (10/5): the best. - 3 nights stay in dog friendly room had no complaints at all.Working farm with loads of walks in 200 acres see all the farm animals and lake. Breakfast inc exellent food and very friendly staff, loved it and will be back again.
- Ian (10/5): Fantastic Short Break - The Grainary is a great place to stay. We had a double room with ensuite & an adjoining room for up to 3 children, set of bunks & single bed. Breakfast was excellent included cereals, fresh fruit, toast, yogurts & full cooked breakfast off the daily menu. Evening restaurant worth booking, food was excellent. Hosts very friendly & helpful. Farm dog also very friendly & loves to show guests/visitors around the farm. Only negative we found was farm is licensed but after restaurant closed for evening you could get a drink but it worked on an honesty policy according to info pack but we didn't like to do this & no-one was around to get you a drink so we went without, just would have been nice have odd drink
