Guest Reviews
- Michelle (6/5): - Lovely staff. Hotel is somewhat rundown but everything was clean.
- Pat (6/5): - Staff and food were very good but rooms and the plumbing in the property are poor.
On leaving we were not even asked if everything had been ok.
- Richard (6/5): Sutherland Inn - One night stay - Sutherland was just fine for one evening. If you want to eat there you had better get there early as I arrived right around 7pm and was not able to order food. There is a co op across the street and a chinese take away next door however. You won't be parking close as you'll need to park across and down the street at the public lot. The stay was acceptable as I wanted to be close to Brora Golf Club for an early tee time the next day.
- Eric (8/5): - Could use some painting and updating
- David (6/5): - Old inn 1813 nice , however the water never came hot ! So couldn’t get in shower / bath .Breakfast was lovely and very nice staff .
- Deborah (6/5): Average facility - Didn’t feel welcome when arriving, made to feel unwelcome at the restaurant. The room was comfortable but the toilet was very noisy when flushing. The lady at breakfast was lovely and the breakfast was good.
There is no onsite parking, had to park at the towns car park which was a slight walk to the hotel and was free for 24hrs
- Chris (10/5): - All good ... nice staff
- Christopher (8/5): Lovely stay in Brora - Lovely nights stay and a great breakfast to go with it
- David (6/5): -
it was a nice small, convenient located B&B in a pub
- Daniel (8/5): Pleasant roadtrip stopover - A little on the pricier side but a generous sized room with welcoming staff and solid breakfast. Furnishings were perhaps a little dated ... Handy unpaid parking across the road as well.
- Ken (6/5): - No parking. TV didn’t work. Good breakfast.
- daniel (10/5): - Aewsome place to stay
- Kenneth (6/5): - Expensive for the quality of the room
- Evelyn Mary (8/5): - Enjoyed our overnight stay. Food good staff very helpful.
- John (10/5): - Charming old place with some great local history. Great times are to be had at the bar/restaurant! We had room 7 and with the windows closed it was very quiet and relaxing! It was a good value stay. Enjoyed the food, atmosphere, and neighborhood!
- Helen (8/5): - We spent a lovely evening at The Sutherland Inn. Staff were incredibly friendly, food was excellent, beds comfortable. Water pressure was variable and we had to run the shower for some time before any hot water came through. Would definitely recommend a stop off here.
- Cathleen (8/5): Great for one night - The interior is very dated, but we enjoyed our stay. Even though we overlooked the main road, it wasn’t noisy. Our TV wouldn’t work but it was resolved very quickly. The staff were very friendly and attentive and breakfast was delicious
- Alister (6/5): Expensive - It was fine, no hot water, but they did apologise, it was just really expensive for what it was
- George (4/5): - Perhaps it’s the off season but was very disappointed.
The proprietors were nice and the breakfast was good but the facilities had a lot to be desired.
Plumbing and heating especially at £130 a night was terrible.
Would not recommend or stay there again.
- Sharon (10/5): - Amazing place to stay and food was lovely too
- Irene (6/5): - Room was clean but a bit tired. Toilet was a terrible flusher. Breakfast 7.30 until 8.30 which was a bit early for me. Evening meal was good and well cooked.
- P (6/5): - Noise from the road outside kept us awake.
Lorry drivers racing through with little regard for safety
- Fran (8/5): - Food and drink great! Accommodation area including room a bit tired. Friendly staff
- Michele (8/5): - Was a nice hotel. Friendly staff. Food was average. The lighting in the bathroom and bedroom was poor but that’s the only complaint. Enjoyed our stay.
- Claire (6/5): - Room was very tired and bathroom ceiling falling away. Bath was cracked. Hair in the bath. Over priced in our opinion. Staff were friendly. Very few socket points in the bedroom.
- Wade (10/5): Solo traveler - I had a great stay at the Sutherland Inn. Room was clean, comfortable, and quiet. The food was very good. Since I had an early golf round, they made me a sack lunch to grab and go. Friendly staff - I would absolutely stay here again.
- Stuart (8/5): Lovely stay and reasonably priced! - Lovely stay with great food and very reasonably priced! The only criticisms were the bathroom; the toilet seat was not properly attached, and the shower head leaked all over the place, and secondly the walls; paper thin and noisy neighbours woke us up at 1am.
- Mike (8/5): - Met expectations. OK for a night. Menu not to my liking and unlikely to eat there again but bar good.
- Annmarie (10/5): - everything was lovely for our stay. will definitely be back. the location was lovely
- Harry (10/5): - Great value for money n breakfast great
- Burnett (8/5): - Good traditional traveller’s inn in lovely part of the country.
- Morag (6/5): - The room itself was fine, if a little dated. Couldn't see how to get the towel rail to turn on, but bed was comfy. Some of the staff seemed a little offhand and unhelpful with me, with one staff member directly contradicting what a different staff member had previously told me, but this somehow being implied as my mistake.
- Howard (8/5): - The staff at this hotel were fantastic, very warm, welcoming and obliging! The rooms were very comfortable with all facilities that you could want.
- Andrew (10/5): Very friengly staff - Excellent stay. Staff very friendly and able to cater for gluten free at dinner and breakfast.
- Iain (10/5): Enjoyable Stay - good food, local pub atmosphere just what we enjoy, good selection of beer and spirits in bar, comfortable bed
- steven (8/5): Good B and B - Great little venue to stay if around Brora.
Couldn’t have breakfast As was out for work early but the hotel provided me with a packed lunch
- BARRIE (10/5): Great time had by alk - Been visiting Brora for the last 15 years.
The Sutherland Inn totally meets our requirements.
- Christine (8/5): - Nice property and staff. Breakfast was good. The wifi was very slow but otherwise a comfortable space to stay.
- Adrian (10/5): Nice country pub - Nice pub with a friendly bar and excellent restaurant, rooms were small but comfortable. Parking was across the road in the Co-op car park.
- Dorothy (10/5): - Would certainly stay again
- Margaret (8/5): Good place to break a long journey - Good night’s stay in village pub popular with locals. Rooms were well kept, clean and comfortable. Food was very good, service was slow as food prepared to order. Like everywhere, it seems, would benefit from an extra member of staff. Not much happens in the village but there is a decent cafe, a good ice cream shop, and a well-stocked shop.
- Francis (6/5): - It was a lovely breakfast and staff were polite and friendly. However, the service was let down badly by the fact the pub closed before 10pm and guests weren’t allowed to have a drink in the bar after this time. As my room was small, shabby and quite cold, I didn’t want to be restricted to it after 10pm. The pub itself is in a poor state of repair. The taps and fittings in my room were shabby to say the least. It is quite a cold old building and whilst there was a serviceable heater in the room, it was cold in the corridors and the pub generally. Overall, it would have been just about adequate at half the price charged - at close to £100 a night, it fell a long way short of value for money.
- William (10/5): Great service - Very friendly and pleasant staff, great breakfast and accommodated an early breakfast
- susan (10/5): - The staff were very friendly, efficient and could not do enough for us. We had our evening meal in the hotel on each night of our stay and were very impressed with the choice, quality and quantity of the food we ordered. The breakfast was very good and we were able to order as many of each item as we wanted. The breakfast chef and the young lady who served us could not have been more friendly and attentive. Our room was cosy and quiet and the beds were extremely comfortable. My only complaint was that the bottle of Pinot Grigio I ordered with dinner was a Jack Rabbit with the staggering price tag of £29.94. However I have to say that I should have asked what the make of Pinot Grigio was and the cost of it before ordering. A lesson learned!
- Kim (6/5): Good place to stay in town - You have to remember this place 100yrs old so bare this mind. It’s central right in town. The pub downstairs serves good food large portions. But if you have a room in the front the street noise from cars going by is annoying at night.
- William (8/5): Sutherland Inn Review - The hotel looked a little tired. But this was more than made up by the customer service and food. Would definitely recommend a visit if your looking for accommodation in Brora.
- John (10/5): Lovely hotel - Lovely hotel. People very friendly and food was excellent. Will definitely be back.
- Louise (10/5): - Our stay here was not planned, but this ended up be such a delightful place to stay.
highly reccommend
- Mary L (8/5): - Good overnight stay
- Amelia (8/5): - Hotel and staff very good, everything clean and Tidy and food was excellent especially the full Scottish breakfast.
- Jeannette (10/5): A charmed stay - Excellent meals and breakfast. The staff was well organized and very friendly. All in all it was charming.
- Stefan (8/5): - Nice
- ronald (10/5): Comfortable stay. - Nice friendly staff. Comfortable. No frills. Good price.
- ALISON (8/5): - Great place to stay.
- Barrie (8/5): Good value hotel. - Been staying here for a number of years. Suits our needs.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good apart from the spin dryer at 11pm - It's right next to the A9, so we expected noise from the road at night. In reality there was almost no road noise at night. But a washing machine / spin dryer was used at 11pm for about minutes that made hour whole room shake.
- Vic (8/5): Food and staff the stars - Unfortunately there are no disabled facilities here, although the staff were happy to carry our luggage upstairs for us as there are no ground floor rooms.Food was excellent and the staff although all young, were all extremely friendly and helpful.
- Alex (8/5): Good value, family-run inn. - A friendly, family run hotel with few problems at the price. Checking-in and out in the noisy bar was very unwelcoming and put us in a poor mood after a long journey.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Fine if you don’t have another option - Our room was in rough shape. The door to the bathroom stuck closed, there was either mold or dirt on the wall, the cold water did not work on the sink. It was fine if you have no other options, but I would suggest staying in Golspie or Dornoch if you have choices. Brora did not have much to offer either.
- Lillian (8/5): - friendly staff comfy beds Good breakfast
- Myfanwy (8/5): Will stay here again. - Good location for us as we were doing CR500 route.
Good location.
- Barrie (10/5): - Central location for highland exploring.
There was traffic noise, the hotel is on the A9 so that’s to be expected.
- Jeffrey (10/5): - Excellent staff!!
- Natasha (10/5): Happy place - Perfect for me as I know the village very well and always stay at this hotel
- Kylie (10/5): - We really enjoyed our stayed at this homely little inn. The room was very spacious. The staff were outstanding and the whole atmosphere was top grade.
- Barry (10/5): overnight stay - comfortable room and superb food
- Bernard (10/5): Great Hotel - All the staff where exceedingly friendly. Great food and comfortable room
- John (8/5): - Service & food were excellent.
Only gripe - poorish shower!
- Antony (10/5): First rate - Spent 2 lovely nights there, great service, fantastic food absolutely great people, would highly recommend
- DEBROAH (10/5): - The food was wonderful, staff was incredibly helpful, location was perfect. Just loved our stay here.
- Fiona (6/5): 1 night noisy stay - In general not too bad. Comfy bed and nice staff with a very good breakfast. However our 1 night stay was let down by very noisy plumbing. If another room flushed their toilet, it sounded like a plane landing in our room. I totally appreciate that it’s an old building , but the noise was horrendous. And a loose manhole cover that every car on the A9 has to drive over was also quite annoying when it was situated outside our bedroom window.
Finally, we reserved our room through an online site. The amount of the room was reserved on my bank card at the time ( pending debit card transaction) . When checking out, the owner sled me to pay. When I explained that an amount was already being processed he said that that’s how the company does it’s admin. So I had to pay the hotel, and waited 2 days for the other amount to drop off my account. Pretty poor I would say , and if it had been for anymore than a 1 night stay I doubt if there would have been enough in my bank account to service both amounts .
- Gillianne (8/5): - An authentic inn in a small interesting seaside village. Friendly service from caring locals. Excellent bathroom, Freshly renovated. Very comfortable quiet room. Although the N is on the main road metre thick walls insure a good nights sleep.
- Barrie (10/5): Very Enjoyable Stay - Very enjoyable stay. Very freindly staff. Have been staying here for over 10 years, and have already booked next years stay.
- Iain (10/5): Good - Friendly helpful staff good food clean and comfortable.
- Karen (10/5): - Food was good and staff friendly
- JOHANNES (10/5): Hidden gem - Decent size room in a lovely hidden gem - Brora. Absolutely beautiful and close to Dunrobin castle. A must visit for all Sutherlands…
- Giles (8/5): - Overall was ok, dinner and breakfast good, bed was uncomfortable, toilet noisy, slight mould in corner of room
- Chris (10/5): - Conveniently located close to place of work.
Food and service was good, quick turn around table service.
Very good price to include a full breakfast.
- Andrew (10/5): - Clean quiet place to stay no issues at all apart from parking car accrss road on free parking jut not an issue really.
- Stephen (10/5): - Very fine dining, fresh caught salmon, whole peppercorn grinder on table, very comfortable room, family operated.
- Nicola (10/5): - The location was excellent. Staff were friendly and helpful. Very reasonably priced. Food was yummy, both dinner and breakfast. Room was lovely and perfect with our 2 dogs
- Alan (10/5): - Staff were excellent , dinner service was a bit slow but it was busy, didn’t spoil the stay Breakfast
- Joanne (10/5): - Very central to NC500. Co-op opposite so good for little stock-up. Hotel staff very good, room good but beginning to look tired. Evening meal and breakfast lovely. Beautiful walk down to coast about 10mins from hotel.
- andy (10/5): - Great accommodation, great food, great service and a proper laugh with the locals in the bar
- Verified traveler (6/5): OK - There were positives and negatives. Firstly the positives. Lovely staff, lovely village and a fabulous breakfast with everyone attentive to COVID precautions. On the downside it was pretty noisy due to the traffic and the macerators in our bathroom and in the one next door. As a result of the noise we didn’t get much sleep so probably wouldn’t choose this hotel again. However we are light sleepers, so if you’re not it could be a good choice.
- Erika (8/5): - A pleasant overnight stay. We stayed in the family room which was nicely decorated and well equipped. However, it was over the bar and so was a little noisy. We ate in the restaurant which was okay but we felt a little overpriced. A good breakfast.
- Linda (6/5): Could be better - Room old and dated. Water cold in shower. Not really worth the money but limited choice in the area. Breakfast very good.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Staff very friendly and helpful, food was delicious nothing was too much trouble, locals very warm and welcoming. Beach was stunning.
- J (10/5): Great stay in a perfect location - We had an amazing stay. Cycling the NC500, we were able to lock our bikes securely in their back store rooms.
We arrived about 6pm but was able to book dinner for the evening. Delicious hearty food, perfect after a day cycling.
I was expecting to receive a courier package for my bike at the hotel and needed to wait at the hotel. All the staff were completely amazing and kept an eye out for my package and messaged me as soon as it arrived.
The area has some great places to visit, we visited the local distillery, the tours were all booked up, but we had a taster flight and the bartender was brilliant in advising about all the different whiskies.
I would definitely stay at this place again!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Welcoming bar staff, local bar with mix of locals and visitors.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I like everything about it. The only thing I can find fault with is the plumbing. The toilet in our room was difficult to flush.
- Garry (10/5): Very nice inn, friendly staff and nice room. - Very nice inn, friendly staff and nice room.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely hotel in the centre of Brora, very friendly staff, fantastic food.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The accommodation was good though the toilet could do with an upgrade, bed comfortable staff were very helpful and friendly especially Candice who ran the bar to a tee nothing was a problem would definitely stay there again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Cosy atmosphere, friendly staff.
Bathroom fittings a little old fashioned but fine.
- B (10/5): Sutherland Inn never disappoints. - Been visting the Sutherland Inn for over 10 years.
Great welcome, and totally suits our needs.
Food from breakfast to dinner was excellent.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Friendly atmosphere. Traffic noise early, but given the hotel’s position on the main road this was to be expected.
- Iain (8/5): Brora -
The Hotel was very good the evening meal and breakfast were excellent. would certainly stay there again
- Eamonn (10/5): Good food - Great food and service, staff very polite and pleasant, have stayed in the past and will continue to book again
- Joan (8/5): - We stayed here for two nights and it was a typical pub with rooms in the North East of Scotland. The staff were helpful and friendly. The food was good pub grub, just what we were looking for
