Guest Reviews
- Duangporn (10/5): The lodge is nice and touched with nature. - The lodge's ambience is wonderful. Wood house, Lake, Mountain, and Staff are touched. Breakfast is also nice. Nothing.
(10/5): - super friendly and helpful people.
great amusements including Sauna!
- Oriol (10/5): -
- Ben (10/5): Super fun, comfy and friendly visit in a stunningly beautiful area. - The location was idyllic: 'glamping' beside a river, with stunning scenery and plenty of woodland walks and trails. We hired the sauna tent so we could dip in the river and then go in the sauna. The staff were exceptionally friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The breakfasts were freshly prepared with local ingredients and really, really tasty! We liked it all! Be aware that the 'tree houses' have a ladder to reach them, and while the rooms have plenty of space to stretch out, they are not 'palatial'. As you would expect with camping/glamping, there are shared kitchen, toilet and shower facilities. If you are looking for a sterile 5* hotel experience, this is not for you; if you like adventure and something a bit quirky in a natural environment, the is super fun and super chilled. We would definitely stay here again, it was a highlight among many outstanding moments touring around Kyushu region.
- Peggy (10/5): Beautiful, clean, comfortable & with a fun, friendly vibe. - The grounds were beautiful! We stayed in a little cabin. Yuki met me at the Front desk & showed me to the cabin. Everything was clean, comfortable, & thoughtfully designed.
- Matthew Niittula (10/5): - Alex was amazing, so glad to meet him. The treehouse was an awesome experience, I wish I had spent more time here it was wonderful. Walking to the bathroom at 2am was rough but not the end of the world.
- Michael (10/5): A must stay - Beautiful location and accommodations Staff always super lovely and hospitable, cosy tree houses and clean amenities
- Andrea (9/5): Great Experience! - I loved the tree houses! The futons were so comfy!
- Ayumi (8/5): -
- Kristen (9/5): -
- Toni (9/5): -
It was off season so I was one of the only guests but they didn't hold back of providing everything like a free evening sauna and bonfire.
Very chilled environment at a beautiful river.
Yuki and his staff are super welcoming!
- linda (10/5): Great staff and lovely location. - Breakfast was lovely, the staff were very friendly and helpful.
It was nice to meet others at the bonfire and good to have our family visit there,
- Michael (10/5): Best Camping - The place is simply magic, direct at a river. The stuff and the owner were just amazing. We spend four wonderful days at the Camping. I would never had imagined that you can heat up a sauna tent up to 100°. You can directly jump into the river.
- Anetta (8/5): - We stayed in the tree house for one night and it was pretty cool. The area around is really nice and we liked the simple breakfast. Staff was really nice as well. Showers. It was really moldy and it was uncomfortable to stand there and take a shower.
- Michal (9/5): -
- Mr. Ahmad (7/5): Good, staff, good location but not the service i was expecting. Should increase service levels - location was nice, river was next to it, within the nature as expected. there are many activities to be done like fishing, rafting and light hiking the AC of my room wasnt working and it wasnt fixed, due to that we slept late and early morning the grass cutter came with loud noises with loud engines screaming outside my door>
The breakfast REALLY need to be improved
- James (10/5): Beautiful place with wonderful people - Beautiful, natural setting on a crystal clear creek with kayaking, hiking, and fishing to enjoy. Breakfast was good. The owners and staff were terrific. We left something behind, and they went out of their way to track us down and help return our lost items.
- Lei Qiao (10/5): -
- Megan (10/5): Blissful retreat into nature! - We were really looking forward to our stay in Bungo-Oita as a time to decompress from city traveling and connect to nature. Lodge Kiyokawa offered that and so much more - the available activities (bonfires, day trips to Mt. Aso, local waterfalls and gorges, kayaking on the river, to name a few) made us regret not staying longer, and the staff were really wonderful. We enjoyed our meals at the lodge but would have probably planned a little better by shopping for our own groceries if we stayed longer. Renting a car to get around the area is highly recommended. We will definitely work a stay at Lodge Kiyokawa into our plans the next time we're in Japan! For those in our party with back issues, the beds and futon were VERY firm.
- Paul (10/5): - Highly recommend.perhaps a 2-3 night stay would be best to enjoy the activities offered at the site.
- Makoto (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sophie (8/5): Cool & friendly place! - We had a great time here staying for 3 nights. Location is great, lots of activities, the treehouse and facilities were comfortable and clean, and all of the staff were super friendly and helpful. Tasty breakfast and dinner. Overall just a great vibe and we left feeling happy and relaxed! Nothing!
- Ricky (9/5): Worth the trip - Host was warm and friendly. Was very helpful. It feels that you have the property to yourself It is a bit hard to find
- Carolyn (10/5): Great location, loved staying in a treehouse. - Loved our stay at Lodge Kiyokawa. Our kids loved sleeping in a treehouse and we all slept well. Facilities were clean and well maintained and staff were very friendly.
- Damon (10/5): One of the best glamping sites I’ve ever been - We stumbled upon this campsite by chance. Without any particular expectations, this experience turned out to be the most memorable part of our entire trip. The place is incredibly beautiful, and if you're looking for a unique experience during your travels, this is definitely the perfect spot for you.
Surrounded by stunning nature, this location allows you to slow down and take a proper rest. The staff here are extremely friendly, providing detailed explanations to help you understand the facilities and activities available at the campsite.
What makes this place special is the variety of activities they offer, which change every week. We were lucky enough to experience the sauna. The sauna building is uniquely designed and adorable, with beautiful interiors and a lovely woody aroma. The experience left us feeling healthier and filled with endorphins.
I recommend checking their website before your trip to see what free activities are available on the day of your stay. Even if the sauna is a paid experience, it’s absolutely worth it.
The dinner here was also exceptionally delicious, featuring fresh local ingredients, offering a dining experience different from eating at restaurants elsewhere. I highly recommend it.
If you want to connect with nature but don’t want to go through the hassle of traditional camping and bringing lots of equipment, this type of glamping is perfect. This is an absolute hidden gem!
- Huey (9/5): Superb -
- Jenushan (10/5): Exceptional - My stay at Lodge Kiyokawa in Kyushu was like stepping into a hidden slice of paradise; the treehouses felt like cozy nests high among the trees, with the river's gentle murmur as my lullaby. Alex and Masato, made sure every meal was a delight, and their suggestions for hiking and biking turned my trip into an unforgettable blend of relaxation and adventure.
- Heather (10/5): Exceptional - If you love a good camping vibe you will love this place, loved the location, tucked away next to a gorgeous river.(which yes u can swim in after a sauna!)
The atmosphere, the food, the staff all excellent.Wish we had stayed longer!
- Anantapon (9/5): Beautiful Place, Welcome and active owner. I wish I had more time here. - The view and atmosphere are really outstanding. The owner and staffs have very strong service mind. There are many interesting activities such as tent souna, BBQ, and paddling etc. Dinner and breakfast are great. Local beef and local sake are perfect. What impressed me is they do not only present good meals, but they also introduce quality local products.
- Konstantinos (10/5): One of the most peaceful stays of our entire life! - Amazing location, great activities, most polite people working there and an overall 10/10 experience!
- Jenny (9/5): Superb - Lovely place. There are some beautiful waterfalls and temples just one bike ride away (they rent bikes aswell). Highly recommend
- Mohan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kelpy (10/5): A relaxing retreat - A really cool place to stay! All the staff were friendly and very helpful. Very responsive to messages and questions.
The shuttle service was amazing and convenient as someone who travels by public transportation. There is so much to do at the lodge. They have saunas, you can swim in the river; there are also inflatable rafts, bikes, bathing suits, and BBQ equipment available for renting.
If you are ever passing between Kumamoto and Oita, you should stop by!
- Alma (9/5): Awesome nature gateway with lots of fun activities - Awesome place right next to a beautiful river. The room is just big enough for 2 and has an ac. They have free activities each day and lots of fun options. The sauna is new and relaxing and the cold plunge water was great! The hosts speak perfect English and were very hospitable and kind. Definitely recommend for families, couples and friends. Don’t miss this place! Weak WiFi
- Michelle (10/5): Fabulous staff gr8 information very peaceful - Lovely off beaten track, lots of activities would love to Ed to have stayed longer Nothing
- William (10/5): Arigato - Staff friendly and very welcoming, and willing to help. Food in the evening delicious; especially the beef. Riverside location is fantastic. Sauna. Rafting. Bike hire. Some waterfalls and a temple within the local proximity; I cycled to both. Countryside surrounding the lodge is beautiful.
- Dean (10/5): The place to be - If you wanna enjoy a few days outside the city in a fantastic and beautifull place, this is 100% the place to be, you can do alot of activities, rafting, ebiking, sauna.... They also can pick you up from the station or bring you to the grocery store for free. And if you dont wanna do anything and just relax you can just sit by the river and listen to the nature, water and sometimes even the bonfire that is also fine. This all in combination with the super friendly staff. Have made this one of my best experience in Japan for sure.
- Ashleigh (10/5): Dreamy riverfront lodge ✨ - This place truly felt like a dream, with a tranquil river, waterfall, luscious greenery and the faint hum of animals and nature. Our stay in the air conditioned treehouse was exceptional, with futons that, while firmer, offered a uniquely comfortable rest. The seclusion of the spot made it feel like a private slice of paradise. The river and waterfall were so serene that I could spend hours simply relaxing on their sun loungers by the edge. There is also a cafe across the river that is run by a wife and husband duo that is only accessible by walking or driving on a path through a scenic rice paddy. It had sushi, pizza, noodles and more that was delicious and worth trying! The lodge also offers a range of riverside activites such as saunas, bike riding, a fire-pit for evening relaxation, and water rafting. The rafting and the peaceful moments floating in the river were core memories from my stay and a must try!
- Hyejin (10/5): We will come again as soon as we can 💕 - The nature around, cozy and friendly atmosphere
- Martha (10/5): the sign here says " this way to Heaven ", and it is not wrong - This is a one of a kind experience in Japan, getting to go "glamping" in the countryside. Even the treehouses here have air conditioning. the womens' dorm is in a wood cabin that is gorgeous, and smells nice, like the different wood it was constructed of, a reminder that the river is only a few meters away. The property not only has bamboo and and other forests, but a mushroom growing area, fruit trees, and then all the normal things a river camp needs like bicycles, sauna tents, rafts/paddles( across the river to the waterfall ) , super soakers and other toys, and many different types of BBQs. and if they don't have something, the amazing staff will get it for you. I didn't come in a car, they picked me up at the train station, and they arranged 2 different, discounted price, tours for me, of the big waterfalls, and the cave. The kitchen here had everything I needed, and there is a restaurant here , too. There is local foodie culture , with a lovely farm market and regional artisanal products for sale. ( and, of course, the usual vending machine ) Multiple areas to sit and look at the river in shaded picnic areas, or from behind huge windows in the air conditioned lounge. Activities like outdoor movie night, and campfires, are scheduled for each day of the week. If you are headed to Beppu, I highly recommend you taking the hour detour for a visit out here, even if its just for the day, to do the "JOKI =sauna, river, repeat."
- Ilja (8/5): Very good -
- Liam (10/5): Exceptional - I loved my stay at Lodge Kiyokawa, a completely relaxing experience I was able to do things at my own pace, in a beautiful location right on a river and with the availability to walk and hike nearby or rent a bicycle and cycle to places nearby.
I had two nights of dinner and I had the beef and have to say it was so delicious, I'd go so far as to say possibly the best I've had in my 5 weeks here!
All in all I really enjoyed Lodge Kiyokawa, very friendly staff included, I would definitely return.
- Katherine (10/5): Exceptional - Loved the riverside cabin and the river at the doorstep.
- Katherine (10/5): If you are looking for a quiet, surroundedb nature but still want a comfortable stay (bed and a/c) Lodge Kiyokawa is - Lodge Kiyokawa will always be our haven. Very peaceful and clean. I also love the staff. Alex, Madina, and Yuki. They are very friendly and the service is remarkable. My kids enjoyed the river and playing around the campsite. Not staying longer. We only stayed for nights.
- Sarah (10/5): - We had a fantastic stay here! The staff Alex and the team, were super friendly and had even planned daily group activities. We ordered the dinner set and it was incredible! We were able to get a ride to and from the train station, which was greatly appreciated. I would recommend giving them a call if you need to (we just used a payphone) as there was issues with sending messages on this website. The staff can speak English and Japanese! and were super foreigner friendly. The scenery was absolutely stunning and they even had swimwear and water shoes to rent if you wanted to go for a dip or use the saunas! Our cabin was beautiful, and clean. Our only regret would be not spending longer here :) Thank you Alex and the team for our incredible stay!
- Meena (10/5): Exceptional -
- Marissa (9/5): Great experience, will come back. - Great location, lovely staff speaking both English and Japanese. I initially booked the dorm but it was quite full and felt stuffy so I upgraded to the treehouse which was great. Super comfortable (although I was there alone so I doubled up the futon and duvets, I wonder if it would be a little less comfortable if used as single) BBQ meals were great but I think I undercooked the chicken. Totally my fault, but if I fully cooked it, seemed a bit tough. Wagyu was super fatty so be warned if you’re eating it on your own, it’s a lot of fat!!
¥9000 for a solo person in the tree house would be a little steep I think, but they gave me an on-the-day discount since I was on my own.
- Gianluca (10/5): Exceptional - One of our best place we have been in Japan, suuuuper friendly staff and amazing location on the river! My girlfriend had a little accident on her harm, so she culdn't climb to one of our little house and Alex gave us a cottage for the same price...pity we couldn't stay more! High recommended! nothing!
- Chanoke (9/5): Superb -
- Sergei (9/5): Superb - Cool friendly staff, nice campy place, nature, e-assist bicycle!
- Jordan (9/5): Lovely stay with a beautiful setting, cozy amenities, and friendly staff. - Location was stunning, with a beautiful riverside setting in a serene little valley. Treehouse accommodation was warm and cozy, and a very unique experience that I’d recommend to anyone looking to get out of the city and enjoy the countryside. Staff was helpful, and friendly and the BBQ beef experience was expensive but very high quality A5 Wagyu, and fresh local produce. Plus, the house made pickled radishes were a lovely addition to the meal. Lots of extra activities on site to take part in, although the price point for some of them seems slightly steep. Not a bad thing necessarily, however if you’re planning on experiencing everything the lodge has to offer such as the saunas or bike rental, prepare to shell out some additional cash on top of your accommodation fees.
- Andrei (10/5): Fantastic location and staff. The river is gorgeous and there are many great activities to do - Breakfast was amazing, staff was over the top friendly and helpful - they even will pick you up from the train station and drive you to and from the grocery store.
- Walailuk (9/5): Superb -
- KWOK YIU (6/5): -
- Linda (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sahil (10/5): - This place is a bit special. Lovely setting next to river. Staff very friendly and facilities clean. Stayed in a tree house one night. Was a great memorable experience. Used an e-bike and went around the local area, past rice fields and old shrines. One of the highlights of our trip to Japan.
- Daniel (10/5): Great stay to get out of the city - We had such a lovely time at Lodge Kiyokawa. Arrived a bit late after a long drive and Yuki was very helpful checking us in. The wooden 'huts' are a lot of fun, a great size, air conditioned and have fairly comfortable futon style beds. The property is in a really nice area right on the river with options for bike hire, rafting, saunas and much more. Unfortunately we didn't get time to explore it all, but we'll definitely be back! Nothing really.. everything was great!
- Sawyer (10/5): Exceptional - Fresh mountain Air and a lovely River fresh fruit everywhere The barbecue grill cost more than the room however they did give me plenty of charcoal and a torch to light it with and cleaning the barbecue grill was not my responsibility something I am just not used to however I see the appeal
- Zhuqing (10/5): Exceptional - By a clear river full of fishes, clean tree house with plenty space inside A little difficult to access without a car
- Leigh (9/5): Superb - The staff, location and facilities were all fantastic.
We felt comfortable and would love to have extended our stay. Next year we plan to stay a 2-3 nights to fully relax in such a great location. The sauna (Joki) was also any amazing experience and Alex was a great host. Definitely recommended.
- Puja (10/5): Exceptional - Loved it. Location and setting
- Katrina (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mwria (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mandi (10/5): Staying at Lodge Kiyokawa was a unique and unforgettable experience - 10/10 recommend! - There was so much to like about Lodge Kiyokawa! I loved the unique design of the cabins and treehouses, there were varied activities offered, the local food was delicious, the staff were kind and went above and beyond, and the surrounding area was beautiful! Oh, and the shower pressure and temperature was perfect! Besides recommending a stay here, I also recommend trying the Finnish sauna - or at least take a dip in the river! 🔥🥶 Not really a big deal but there was no hair conditioner in the showers
- Katherine (10/5): Relaxing! FUN! And most of all worth the money and travel - Lodge Kiyokawa is a very peaceful and beautiful “glamping” site. Very clean and the crew were very friendly. What i didn’t like is not staying longer!
- Klara (10/5): Amazing place! Make sure not to miss it. We did bbq, kayaking and the sauna - The setting, the activities and the while experience in general
- Artubado (9/5): Superb -
- Maksym (10/5): Exceptional -
- Maii (10/5): Thank you guys - I had a great time. I would definitely recommend the lodge and hopefull come again. - Staff is incredible - very helpful, prompt, professional and accommodating in every way. Alex, Yuki, Medina and the whole team - thank you 🙌🏻 Nothing. I had a great time.
- Anne (10/5): Perfect place to stay in nature for a couple of days and relax! - Great quiet place with lots of facilities & activities! We had a great local dinner & breakfast. We had a nice conversation with other guests at the campfire in the evening. We regretted we didn't stay for more nights to enjoy the river and try out the tent sauna or other activities. Futons not really comfortable.
- Verified traveler (10/5): I wish I had more time! - This place had a very adult summer camp feel. I came right before the summer busy season so it was very quiet. The river was lovely and peaceful and the staff was super friendly and helpful. I got breakfast included which was a nice way to start the day. They also offer dinner which was simple, but delicious. I really wish I had more time to spend here, the area was so beautiful!
- Waraporn (10/5): Exceptional - 10 of 10 everything is perfect here!!! we will visit again for sure
- Dang (10/5): Exceptional -
- Michele (10/5): experience the great outdoors with all the modern creature comforts! - Simply the most amazing river side lodge in the heart of pristine nature - we stayed in a tree hut for 2 nights - felt like an adventure camping but with all the modern day comforts.
Tree hut - in hut you get wall sockets to charge your devices, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, window shutters to let in the fresh crisp forest air, super clean wooden floor boards and futon bedding. Even though you are using a shared toilet and shower - these were both super hygienic, personal care essentials all provided and organised. Food - there’s a small restaurant that serves up a good hearty breakfast and dinner sets. Being city folk, we thoroughly enjoyed the “camp like with city comforts” experience!
The staff, Yuki, Alex and Merdina, were always on site to make you feel welcomed, they took the effort to chit chat, offer help etc. Yuki went out of his way to fetch us to the starting point of our walking trails and also to see the breathtakingly picturesque Chinda waterfalls.
Such a special memorable experience I hope to repeat again! Thank you again kiyokawa lodge!

The owners; Alex and Yuki went above and beyond to make sure we had a pleasant stay and they are genuinly Nice and caring people. The staff is fantastic and all are so helpfull to make sure you have the best stay possible.
We loved the place, location, food and we tried a lot of the scheduled activities such as hiking, renting electric bikes, sauna, forrest movie night etc. All was very pleasant and Yuki and Alex even participated in the social activities which we really enjoyed.
Besides this the area is very beautiful and this is worth visiting if you are a Nature lover.
Looking forward to coming back here some day!
Thanks from Louise and Emma.
- Joris (10/5): Very nice! - Very nice location and the staff was very friendly. We slept in a small hut and slept very well during our 2 nights there. The heating/cooling in the room made our stay very comfortable.
- Phattaradol (10/5): Exceptional - Very nice staff, Nice place.
- Peifen (9/5): Superb -
- Tiffany (10/5): Incredible stay in the Japanese countryside - We had such a great time at Satonotabi Resort Lodge!
We booked tree houses and they had space for us to sleep and store our luggage. They're equipped with smart air con units too, so no need to worry about being too hot or too cold. Only thing I would improve is maybe an extra futon as the flooring is harder than a tatami, so the single slim futon wasn't the most comfy.
But the camp site is beautiful and quiet. The staff is great and friendly, always happy to help. Even better, for foreign travellers like us, they speak English really well so it was the easiest stay of our entire trip.
While we had our own plans to visit the area, there are plenty activities organised / available on site too, and I'd happily come back to try them next time.
Also, the food was really excellent! We took the half board option, and it was one of the best meals we had.
I would love to come back, I had such a great time. Highly recommend the place!
- Olivia (9/5): Very fun place to stay in the countryside! - I had a great time staying here. The staff were all so nice!
The food was amazing, I did the breakfast as well as the chicken and beef for dinner, and everything tasted amazing.
The activities were a lot of fun, I tried the sauna, rented bikes to go to the waterfall and also rented the charcoal grill for dinner one night. I think everything was very reasonably priced. If I came back to Kyushu, I would stay here again. It's a bit far out of town, but they do rent electric bikes, so it's not too difficult to get into town.
They also provided a pick-up and drop-off service from the train station.
