Guest Reviews
- Diane (6/5): - We stayed here for 3 nights. The staff were friendly enough, but nothing to write home about.
*CONS* – Unfortunately, the experience didn’t quite live up to expectations. Breakfast was lukewarm every morning — the plates were hot, but the food wasn’t (and the toast arrived cold). It seems like it's prepared in advance and left on a hot plate. I’d encourage the staff to try out their breakfast. The bedside lamps were far too large, leaving hardly any space on the table. The bed's headboard wasn’t secured, and the room’s window was broken — during Storm Amy, it honestly felt like the eye of the storm was at the end of our bed! The toilet seat was loose, the bathroom extractor fan didn’t work, the shower arm was broken, the mirror was broken, and the kettle wouldn’t stop boiling. On top of that, the tiles in the bar toilet were loose and actually felt unsafe.
*PROS* – The bed was comfortable, the restaurant food was served hot (unlike breakfast), the location is great, there’s plenty of parking, the bar area is lovely, and the in-room tea and coffee supplies were generous.
Overall, while there are some positives, the hotel is in need of serious maintenance and modernisation.
- stephen (8/5): - Just needs a bit updating
- Brenda (8/5): - Great
- Craig (6/5): - Pros - great location, big free car park, good tea tray and even bath robes in room
Cons - remote control filthy, tape on window to stop you opening it ? Breakfast service poor - no interaction from staff asking if all ok etc ? Bathroom snug - over 6ft you might struggle to sit on toilet without your knees pushed up against wall
- L (8/5): - Clean comfortable spacious room with a lovely outlook onto the sea.
Helpful staff. Easy parking. Easy access to nearby towns and roads.
- Andrew (10/5): - Really helpful and pleasant staff. Plenty of car parking available. Very clean and tidy.
- Leo (10/5): - We love this hotel. Breakfast was included. Our room was facing the sea and we had a large room.
- Teresa (8/5): - Lovely hotel with a view of the beach.
Which was lovely and clean.
Hotel staff were friendly nothing to
Much trouble .
Would return .
- Geoff (8/5): Lovely sea view - Nice hotel if a little dated.
- Laura (4/5): - Hi, firstly I would like to say thank you for allowing us to come in and change before our check-in time as we were going to a special occasion.
I have stayed at the lauriston in the past, had lots of family celebrations - christenings, weddings and special family gatherings here over the years. It is a place that hold lots of special memories to me and my family.
I would always try and book here for a stay when visiting my home town.
But sadly this may not be the case from now on. I just feel the accommodation needs a complete renovation. The bed in our room (room 1) was shocking, it needs replacing and is probably the most uncomfortable bed we have slept in.
The rooms aren’t dirty but the carpets are worn, the bathroom cabinets are damaged too, and this looks like it could do with upgrading.
The carpets in the main area are badly worn and it’s actually really sad to see on as mentioned previously a place I have used many times.
I think that rooms need decorating, new beds, furniture and bathrooms before I would consider staying again.
I want to say though that the lady who is I presume the housekeeper who served breakfast and cleans the place is just lovely, she is the cheeriest of people and was so helpful and I hope she gets to hear this as credit where credit is due.
However the owners really need to take heed and get this hotel back looking at its best and it could be a wee gem of hotel,
- Daniel (10/5): - Pleasant stay at Lauriston hotel definitely will use again
- Andrew (10/5): - A very relaxing hotel with a food menu that had vegan options. I also had a vegan voiked breakfadt that included vegan haggis. Very good.
- Keely (6/5): - Lovely location, early closing on Sunday pm
- Wendy (8/5): Very Good Small Hotel - Nice room and view . Decor a bit tired . Bed huge and very comfy. Small but good shower room . Lovely views
- Kevin (8/5): - Nice hotel .rooms large and clean.food great .
- Stuart (8/5): - A decent hotel and value for money.
- Jacky (10/5): - Waitress in the breakfast dining room extremely courteous and good at her job. Room 2 has a wonderful view to the beach and the islands beyond.
- Barry (6/5): Okay, but dated - Very dated and worn. Bathroom and bedroom is tiny and very little room. Felt a bit rushed to have breakfast as we had to fill in a form the previous night and picking an exact time to eat for the next day.
Came down to load the car and staff were waiting for us to have breakfast and felt like we were being pressured to sit down. Breakfast was good and no issues. Hotel just feels like it needs serious updating
- Mr (10/5): - Good and comfortable stay
- Sheila (6/5): - First impression was "very rundown and tacky" and in desperate need of a spruce up. It needs a good tidy up in the front. Not very welcoming on arrival. It was clean enough and staff were friendly but definitely very overpriced for what you got. Breakfast was cold and barely adequate. Not somewhere to return to.
- Mark (10/5): Comfortable and good food - Comfortable and good food
- Mark (10/5): First class service and attention - Excellent staff really helpful food excellent will definitely stay again
- James (10/5): - Staff were friendly, efficient and extremely helpful.
The hotel is a wee bit tired looking but staff bring itback up to being a great place to stay.
- Emma (10/5): Excellent hotel. - Room was great, parking was great and the food was amazing
- James (10/5): Excellent - One night b&b for family party. Fast, efficient check in. Clean, spacious, well appointed room. Comfy bed. Staff were all amazing and breakfast was perfect. Well done to all, we will be back. Thanks.
- David (6/5): - A very tired property with very small room(2). Good shower.
- Shannon (6/5): Close to train station - Initially the condition of the front door and interior reception areas appear to be slightly unkept, there was wooden panel that had fallen off front door and dim lighting that felt intentional to hide things. There was also a really strong perfume smell throughout the property that also felt intended to hide things. However my room was clean and comfortable, with extras like robe and snacks. Staff was friendly and welcoming and breakfast hit the spot! Hotel was chosen for proximity to the train station, which is excellent!
- Marcus (4/5): - Room dark and in need of a major refurb but clean. Bathroom very basic and definitely needs decorating. Paper torn and hanging off wall and sealant cracked and mouldy round bath and toilet. Woken at 6 am by very noisy radiator. Also was locked out returning at 11pm as no one had informed us that we needed to phone and say that we would be "LATE". eventually let in by a night watchman after banging on several doors and windows. Car park unlit and entrance to accommodation felt very dark and unwelcoming.
Breakfast was very good and restaurant had obviously been upgraded at the expense of the bedrooms. Also as accommodation is on first floor with stairs and no lift, totally unsuitable for disabled or those with mobility issues. Even at the rate charged vastly overpriced. Photos are available to back up comments
- Enjay (10/5): - Booked this hotel for the night prior to our ferry journey across to Arran.
Lovely twin room, dinner and breakfast were delicious and all the staff were so welcoming and friendly.
- Paula (8/5): Great stopover - Great location.
Great food at very good value on the early bird 3 course menu.
Breakfast included in room price.
Bathroom door didn’t close properly.
Lovely view from sea view room but a little noisy with traffic (I should’ve thought of that).
Very friendly helpful polite staff.
- Paul (10/5): - I liked everything about my stay, the hotel, the room, the staff and the food.
I Will definitely stay there again.
- Amanda (10/5): - Great size room. Great sleep. Food was good probably one off the best hotel breakfast I’ve ever had. Especially the black pudding was amazing.
- Karen (10/5): - Lovely property, nice decor, friendly staff, great restaurant
- Chris (10/5): - Good menu, excellent breakfast, room was really good, tight fit in the bathroom. A bit tired decor wise, particularly the stair carpet. Would stay again.
- Jonathan (6/5): - Very nice and helpful staff. Hotel is brilliantly located (5 min.from train stop and 15 min. walk to the ferry to Isle of Arran (gorgeous! well worth a visit).
Lauriston Hotel is a good value. Food isnt gourmet, but tasty and filling. For budget minded travelers, well worth considering.
- Jonathan (10/5): - We had our ferry time changed by CalMac from convenient to inconvenient so we decided to travel up the day before and stay in Ardrossan overnight. Wasn’t expecting much but the Lauriston over delivered in every dept. From a lovely huge room with modern en-suite lost in its vast expanse, to the cute table and two chairs in the window bay with a fantastic sea view.
My wife thought the beds on the hard side - I thought the firmness was perfect - we both slept like logs though
Breakfast was lovely - never sure about ordering the night before so when I was not so hungry the next morning I was worried I might offend - in the end they flexed perfectly around what I wanted - and everything was perfectly cooked and very good quality.
Finally the service - from initial calls to check arrangements to check in, to reception arrival, to breakfast service all the staff were just lovely full stop - we can’t wait to go to Arran again but next time we’ll have a couple of days at the Lauriston to extend our holiday!
- Patrick (10/5): Very nice 1 night stay - Very good. Lovely sea view. Nice little touches in the room.
Hotel generally looking a bit dated in parts, but it is an old building!!
- Tera (10/5): - Lovely view of the Firth and great food in the restaurant and wonderful bell hops (no elevator)
- MARGERY (10/5): - It was a very comfortable stay . Can I suggest having a mat for the shower to avoid slipping
- Holly (8/5): - Hotel is in a great location beside the ocean. It could use some updates though.
- Anthony (10/5): Trip - Great place to stay food Great staff very helpful
- Kirstin (10/5): Very convenient for the ferry crosfing - Once place to stay with lively staff members
- Katherine (8/5): Tge Lauriston Hotel Ardrossan - Bedroom was very nice. Bed was comfortable. Hotel clean. I was disappointed in breakfast. My plate seemed a bit greasy and potatoe scone was very soggy. We were only given one slice of toast each and not asked if we would like more. Staff were very nice.and helpful. We had 3 course dinner and it was very enjoyable. We would ho back butwould be wary of breakfast choice.
- yvonne (8/5): - Proximity to train station is great. Food was delicious. We ate breakfast daily and 2 evening mesls
- Thomas (6/5): - Great stay. Breakfast was a bit overpriced for the amount and quality of the food but can’t complain as it was free.
Room was overpriced but understandable due to being the only hotel there staff were lovely and had such a nice welcome.
- Mike (6/5): - Or for monetdeVery convenient for working on our yacht in Clyde Marina and we have used the Lauriston a few times now. The rooms are clean and comfortable the meals in the restaurant are varied and decent value fun and for the price the total package provides good value for money. I do think the carpets are showing their age and could do with cleaning or updating. Unfortunately and unusually the.breakfast was a bit of a disappointment in that that the full Scottish came thoroughly undercooked. I did ask for the bacon to be grilled longer and it came back perfect. The sausage, pudding and haggis I thought were lesser quality than before however. All a bit disappointing this time!
- karen (10/5): - Staff were all fab, on seafront and near railway. Food was amazing
- Anthony (10/5): - Very nice hotel, large spacious room with great sea view.
- thomas (10/5): nice hotel and nice value - definately enjoyed our stay at The Lauriston, the staff were very friendly, the brakfast was excellent as well as the restaurant where we had a meal for 10 in the evening, it had a large parking area which was very convienient. great price too so overall i definately recomend it
- Wilhelmina (10/5): - Warm and welcoming , very spacious comfortable room, lovely friendly staff ..
Super breakfast served .. definitely recommend and we will certainly go back ..
- Margaret (10/5): Exceptional service. - Very comfortable with superb views from the room. Staff were welcoming and so helpful. Meal was excellent breakfast too and the service I received for my mums funeral tea was exceptional.
- Katherine (8/5): Short Stay at The Lauriston Hotel - Nice hotel with lovely friendly staff. Bedroom comfortable except Bathroom bit on small side. Breakfast and dinner both very nice. Also had Sunday Brunch to celebrate relative's 90th Birthday. Meal was lovely and enjoyed by all. Have stayed at hotel before and will definitely return .
Would definitely return to hotel
- David W (8/5): - The restaurant and food was excellent and all staff attentive, however the room we were allocated - Room 2 was only 2.0m wide and 3.5 m long, there was not much room to move about and the shower room was tiny, I believe it has been a cupboard converted into a shower room. As we booked well in advance, we expected better!
- Richard (10/5): - Excellent friendly service, comfortable room, good shower, good breakfast, good value.
- ALAN (8/5): - Property a little tired but staff made up for it. Attentive and professional.
- Denise (10/5): Another amazing trip - Another fantastic stay at this hotel, great value for money and will definitely be coming back
- Tracy (6/5): - Ok for what we needed. Walls were paper thin so could hear next doors entire conversation. Breakfast fab and fresh but literally cereal/yoghurt and cooked breakfast tea/coffee/juice. Walls needed painting and there were a few stains on the wall. Nice welcome pack for tea/coffee. Only stayed 1 night. Nice friendly staff at check in and breakfast.
- Patricia (10/5): - Super friendly staff, clean and comfortable rooms.
- Nicholas (8/5): -
- Elizabeth (10/5): - Friendly, attentive staff. Comfortable bed. Good breakfast.
- Jacqueline (8/5): Great location - Great location for a relaxing trip away.
- Scheville (6/5): Very dated and needs refurb. - Older hotel, easy check in, awful smell upstairs by the rooms. Family room old and dated, mattresses was awful. Very dusty. Bathroom was nice. Awful breakfast all luke warm, plastic wrapper found inside black pudding. Left and went elsewhere for breakfast. Would I stay again NO!!!
- Darren (10/5): - A perfect place to stay. We arrived in the day. parked in the car park. And went to the Restaurant for a late lunch. Fantastic value and good food. We had the Family room. Which did have a side sea view. Our friends had sea view rooms. We went out at night. We all sat together for a great Breakfast. Thank you To Management and staff. There is no shortage of staff. Which shows you get well looked after. I would love to come back again when visiting friends. 10 Out of 10. From Chef Darren.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - No problems at all. Nice room, friendly people and good food
- Nancy (10/5): Lovely - Beautiful building. Our room was lovely with very high ceiling. Dinner in the dining room was excellent.
- Mr Stephen Bruce (10/5): Stylish property with great service ! - This is a gem ! A stylish older property with lots of original features - impressive rooms & a lovely bar and restaurant. Great beds & nice shower & amenities. Staff were fantastic - very friendly & helpful. Beautiful sea views & lovely to walk on the promenade after dinner.
- Dean (4/5): Poor rear room but hotel ok. - Firstly all the staff were great. The pub/hotel was old fashioned but ok. Downstairs was fine. We had the rear room which wasn’t worth the money we paid. The bathroom window needs replacing and doesn’t shut properly parts coming away and crafty. The bathroom was clean but very scruffy. Laminate edges not finished, bits of mold on sealant around bath, Extension cable for tv went under carpet by door to bathroom. Headboard on one of the beds moves and is not secured a lies at an angle because of the frame of the door behind it. Both radiators didn’t come on despite it being cold. Window probably b]needs a net as the house next door can look straight in unless blind is down permantly. This room is well overpriced at £70 and our stay was a miserable one in the room but the actual downstairs of the hotel is fine. Also we had a meal there and breakfast were both good. Shame about the room.
- robert (10/5): - Little Art Deco hotel. Handy for those getting off Campbeltown ferry late. Only 80m from Ardrossan south beach train station. Big breakfast. Good en-suite facilities. Huge shower head.
- Jacqueline (8/5): Great location - Very comfortable hotel with a great view. Delicious breakfast, friendly staff.
- Gavin (10/5): Overnight stop - Really nice overnight stop . Restaurant was excellent and the view great right opposite the beach
- William (8/5): Thumbs up - We extended our stay as impressed with the room, the service provided by the staff and location of the hotel between Saltcoats and Ardrossan. Hotel had its own private car parking and we had an excellent view overlooking the south beach. We really enjoyed our stay.
- Amanda (10/5): Pleasant stay - Check in easy, welcoming, Huge bed, lovely sea view [room 3] breakfast good, food in restaurant excellent, service friendly, very accomodating for our vegan friends with adaptations to the menu if they dont wish to have a standard vegan menu meal. The hotel smelt clean and fresh at all times. Will return again.
- Richard (8/5): Very nice overnight stay. - Great, quiet location and lovely view. Everything was absolutely fine. Room was lovely clean and fresh but the bathroom was a bit small. Food and drink was tasty and good value for money. Happy to recommend it.
- Pat (8/5): Lauriston review - Nice little place to stay. So close to the train station and the sea. There's a hotel bar as well as the pub to the side, very friendly in the pub. Breakfast was lovely, freshly cooked. Looks like they've upgraded the bathrooms since the last time I stayed, decent shower now. On the day of departure, I was leaving before breakfast, however they offered to arrange a takeaway for me, that was most appreciated. Would recommend this for people to stay.
- Victoria (6/5): A bit mixed - We spent a single night here to attend a funeral close by. We arrived fairly late in the evening and first impressions were quite good. The lady who was at the reception was friendly and efficient and took our breakfast order. We went upstairs to our room. I have to say it was clean. However, it really does need some upgrading. The paintwork is in a very shabby condition and the bathroom door didn't close. The bathroom itself was very small indeed. The light fitting overhead was very dusty. Furniture was very shabby, dated and tired. The bed itself was huge but too soft for our taste. The wall into next door's bathroom was paper thin. We could hear coughing so clearly it sounded as though someone was in the room!
There were some good things too, however. The view from our room out to sea was very nice. Toiletries and coffee making facilities were of a good standard. And to be fair, the breakfast was actually very good indeed.
The hotel should upgrade the furniture and deal with some pressing cosmetic issues. At the price it should be more up to date and it would make it far more likely people would return. A missed opportunity.
- Gilbert (6/5): - Property in a good location, food good, staff friendly and helpful. Hotel decor was extremely tired. En-suite bathroom had no heating and the door did not close. The room itself was cold. It was an extremely cold weekend and I’m sure that didn’t help.
- Petrina (10/5): Recommended - Great stay (as always). Room 5, family room has the most fantastic large bay window with sea view. Breakfast was great and the staff are all lovely.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Excellent 1 night stay - Good easy parking on site.
Great Scottish welcome.
Excellent evening meal and cooked breakfast.
- David (10/5): An excellent stay - Once again an excellent stay, food, room & staff all first class.
- Alan (10/5): - Huge room with lovely see view. Crackin' breakfast. Brilliant value for money.
- Mark (8/5): - Enjoyed my stay, great nights sleep and good food.
- John (10/5): - All good
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely room, nice view, comfy beds and amazing food
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice hotel on the beachfront, good facilities and friendly staff. Would definitely stay again
- Stuart (10/5): Ayrshire Coastal walk stopover - Huge triple room with a fantastic sea view.
Service great.
Great value for money- highly recommended.
- Gary (10/5): clean and good value for money - Ok it’s not the ritz but you’re not paying for that. Large room comfy bed and a great breakfast. Stayed overnight for the ferry the next day. Nice and warm.
The hotel could do with some upgrading but the price reflects that.
- WILLIAM (8/5): friendly and excellent location. - Excellent breakfast and staff very helpful. Only downside was the bed was hard. You could feel the solid base through the mattress.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great hotel - Comfy beds, hot shower, excellent breakfast
- Andrew (8/5): - Great staff, very professional in this uncertain time.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - one night stay only. Virus lock downs just starting and there was some confusion concerning the virus, the hotel staff performed very well. the check in was quick, food was available and good. Room was large, very clean and bed comfy, shower worked well.
- Harriet (8/5): Hurray for The Laurieston! - The location of this hotel is right on the sea front and is next to the local train station which makes getting to it extremely easy if travelling by train. The room was very comfortable and had all i needed. The shower room was small and untidily finished but was clean , water hot and plentiful - what more do you jeed. The staff could not have been more friendly and helpful . The breakfast was excellent and set you up for the day ahead.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - To be honest I expected a little more we had to ask for towels when we arrived late afternoon the first breakfast was just awful the bacon fell apart and there was no scotch sausage we were then told we had to Oder the night before
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Having to phone the hotel to get in after 10pm. Difficult when traveling internationally.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Friendly staff.
Great breakfast.
Nice restaurant.
Value for money.
Good location.
Good parking facilities.
Nice big fluffy towels.
Good shower.
Close to ferry terminal.
Rooms a bit worn.
Beds were lumpy and uncomfortable.
- carol (10/5): - From arrival to departure the staff did everything possible to make our stay a happy experience. Check-in was conducted smoothly and efficiently. Made to feel welcome. Breakfast was well prepared and on time by pleasant ladies, as was the dinner on Wednesday evening. All-in-all, a happy experience..
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely big room, friendly staff and great breakfast
- Catherine (8/5): - I stayed overnight on my way to Arran. The service was friendly and helpful and the room spacious and comfortable enough for an overnight. The only real criticism I have is there weren't enough power sockets, I had to unplug the kettle to charge my phone. I managed to leave something behind and they kept it for me so I could collect it on my return journey.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great service and breakfast.
Check in/out very efficient
- Anonymous (6/5): - The only think good about this hotel was the staff, they were lovely and the breakfast was very good. I was very disappointed with the cleanness of the room. The bathroom had a damp smell and the tap leaked. The silicone around the shower cubicle had been applied several times and looked messy and was black in places, the grout on the tiles had also been touched up but poorly done. The whole bathroom needs pulled out and a new one fitted by a professional. The window frame had been replaced but had never been varnished or painted so could do with a sand down and I don’t think the windows had been washed in years. It would have been a nice view but was spoiled by bird poo. The furniture was probably bought in the 80s. The hotel has some nice features and I would stay here again but only if they total refurbished the place and gave it a good clean.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Building looked nice from the outside...very dated inside...carpets were shocking..ie dirty...although i was told there was no hot water in advance...i was surprised that they couldnt get anybody out.Anyway..i only stayed one night..£20 off...on my own..leaving early. My room wasnt that clean..carpet hadnt been hoovered...shower hadnt been cleaned properly..Although it was handy for ferry terminal..i eouldnt stay again..and definetly wouldnt take my partner there.
