Guest Reviews
- Joanna (10/5): -
- Danny (9/5): Amazing, and very remote, hideaway. - Amazing views, the staff were great. An amazing hideaway. The on site waterfall and swimming in the river is amazing. The final 6km to the resort is very difficult. Don't try to get a Noram hatchback/Sedan to do it. Use there shuttle service (tuk-tuk) if need be.
- Kate (10/5): Secluded jungle retreat full of peace and tranquility - The remoteness of the retreat was definitely the biggest selling point for us, providing ultimate peace and tranquility, especially if you are lucky enough to have the place to yourselves as we did for much of the stay. The staff were amazing - attentive, kind, always present. The food was on the pricier side for Sri Lanka but understandable given the remoteness (and not as expensive as listed on booking.com) but some of the dishes were fantastic. We had a room with a plunge pool which was amazing to sit in watching the monkeys in the trees around. Nothing. Our only downside was a loud family with young children arriving on our last day which wasn’t ideal for a peaceful romantic location.
- barry (10/5): - Very remote location but we knew that before we booked. If your looking for somewhere to relax away from the hustle & bustle this is the place. Room was extremely clean & bed was sooo comfortable. Staff were very attentive & helpful. When we went to the water fall for a dip Ravi came with us to ensure our safety, he even jumped in with all his clothes on to show me the rock jump. Food was of a very high standard & tasty. Would highly recommend. Only other point i would say is they could do with safety rail to help across the rocks of the waterfall. Must point out we are older travellers so not so nimble. Nothing.
- Marc (10/5): Super! - Kamers en locatie
- Roman (5/5): -
- Tomer (10/5): -
- Frederiek (9/5): - Geweldige locatie!
Echt niets was teveel.
- V (9/5): Superb -

- Ilona (10/5): Exceptional - Beautiful ending to our Sri Lankan holiday. Had the whole place to ourselves! We had the room with the small outdoor pool and steamroom. It's in the middle of nowhere, but that made this such a nice place. Food was very good, breakfast next to the waterfall couldn't be more perfect. Room was massive, swimming pool very nice. We did nothing here, just relaxing, but you can go on hikes to the waterfall, look for birds or go to the cave.
We liked the drive over and made the experience feel more remote. But if you are traveling bij car or maybe tuktuk, we would definitely advise their pick-up service or that they drive your vehicle there. We traveled on motorbikes, and that was fine. But some parts of the road are very rocky. If you have low clearance on the car or don't feel comfortable on small mountain roads, don't drive yourselves. This place is super nice, but it could use some tlc here and there. For a five-star hotel, you expect everything to be perfect, but it is slightly worn around the edges. It's hard to explain, but just small things here and there. But for us it didn't change our great experience!
- Thies (10/5): Great staff and beautiful pool - Lovely hotel with very friendly staff
- Mordechay (9/5): Superb - Secret beautiful place in the forest to relex .
Amazing with river and waterfall and amazing suites. Not good WiFi connection
- Emma (10/5): Relaxing, comfortable and a great place to see wildlife. Make sure you head out with Sameera the wildlife guide whilst y - A beautiful hotel in a beautiful location. It was quiet and full of amazing wildlife. A wonderful and relaxing place! Sameera, the hotel naturalist was a huge asset and took us on two fabulous walks to go birdwatching and see the cave as well as to the waterfall. He was hugely knowledgeable about the bird life and a great guide. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him and the hotel to anyone wanting to see local wildlife and birds. Nothing
- Younisoo (10/5): "A Perfect Anniversary Escape: Exceptional Service and Stunning Views at Palmstone Resort" - A Perfect Anniversary Escape: Exceptional Service and Stunning Views at Palmstone Resort
I recently had the pleasure of celebrating our wedding anniversary at Palmstone Resort, and it was an unforgettable experience. From the moment we arrived, the staff went above and beyond to ensure our stay was special. Their warm hospitality truly set the tone for our getaway.
One of the highlights of our stay was the breathtaking green view from our suite. The large glass walls allowed us to soak in the natural beauty surrounding us, making it the perfect backdrop for our celebration. The suite itself was spacious and beautifully designed, providing plenty of room to relax. We loved having the option of either a jacuzzi or a steam room. We chose the suite with the jacuzzi, which also featured a lovely chilling patio—ideal for unwinding after a day of exploring.
To make our anniversary even more special, the team surprised us with a delicious cake and allowed us to celebrate next to the pool. It was such a thoughtful gesture that made our day feel even more festive. The next morning, we enjoyed a beautifully prepared breakfast right in front of the river, which was a delightful way to start the day.
The only downside we encountered was a few insects that made their way into the room when we opened and closed the doors. However, we appreciated that there was an insect repellent already installed in both the room and restroom, which helped mitigate the issue.
Overall, our stay at Palmstone Resort was delightful. The combination of stunning views, spacious accommodations, exceptional service, and thoughtful touches made our anniversary truly memorable. I would highly recommend this resort to anyone looking for a relaxing getaway! It was an amazing experience from all aspects.
- Asha (8/5): we love the location and management need to care thier property - we love the location, this is the third visit, most of the linens are old, we got ripped napkins two times.
- Sigal (10/5): Exceptional - Wow!!!!
Placed in. The jungle.
Huge cabana with spa.
Gorgeous place.
Very spacious.
Beautiful designed. With the sound of the river nearby.
Highly recommended.
One of the best places we have ever been. Nothing
- Barcin (10/5): Amazing location and super hospitable staff made our stay at Palmstone Retreat a great one - Amazing location and super hospitable staff made our stay at Palmstone Retreat a great one
- Aqeel (8/5): A Tranquil Retreat in Nature: Beautiful Scenery, Great Service, & Room for Improvement - Had an incredible stay at this stunning property, surrounded by lush forest and a beautiful waterfall right next to the hotel. The access to a nearby hiking trail leading to a waterfall’s cliff added an adventurous touch to our stay. The staff were exceptional—attentive, friendly, and always eager to help. The only downsides were the gravel road leading to the property, which can be challenging for vehicles with low ground clearance, but the hotel offers convenient pickup and drop-off services (while checking in and checking out). The à la carte menu had limited choices and was quite pricey, likely due to logistical reasons. The food was decent, though not exceptional, and could benefit from more variety and better value.
Overall, it was a wonderful experience with just a few minor areas for improvement.
- Riyad (10/5): Exceptional - A true jungle experience with high end amenities. It is for someone who is keen on jungle related activities, serenity, and seclusion, if not then don't go.
- Joanna (10/5): Fantastic luxury accommodation in the jungle - Fantastic location in the jungle. Huge and very comfortable suite with a great private plunge pool. Very clean and lovely friendly staff. We felt that the restaurant prices were quite high especially since it’s not possible to go anywhere else.
- Tiina (7/5): I recommend this hiden gem! - Very special resort. Loved the sound of the jungle and the river. Quiet and peaceful place. Room Decor needs a little bit of uppdating, but we liked the room and the view!
- Blancbena (10/5): Exceptional - Its one of the best places i stayes in sri lanka . Too quiet . Comfortable . And the staff were amazing and patient . Helpful . I forget to ask their names but i remember mohamed was amazing with everything . The driver he picked me up from the town and droped me off while waiting me to make sure everything was good .
The hotel in middle of nature . But had everything needed . Restaurant is very good . Wifi signal very good all around the hotel .
They alao arrange adventure tours which are famous in kitulgala .
- Aaron (9/5): Superb - The location is amazing with a river going through the property. It was very peaceful. The service was amazing. I could call and I could ask for anything to be brought to the room. Their employee Indunil is the best employee I've ever had at a hotel. He made the experience twice as good. Give that man a pay raise! The WiFi is a little weak but you really don't need it out there. The upstairs area of the main building could use some cleaning and maintenance.
- Ian (9/5): Stunning small hotel in the middle of the rain forest - Huge ajoining well appointed suites overlooking the river in the midlle of the rain forest with a steam room, heated plunge pool and jacuzzi bath. Yes the location is remote, but well worth the effort. Stunning main building and pool, with super helpful staff. We enjoyed the rock pools in front of the hotel and hking up to the waterfall for the 10m jump (recommend wearing closed in shoes with long socks for the hike). It didn't rain much at all :-) The rooms and facilities need some maintenance - the jacuzzi in the rooms plunge pool was out of order as were both jacuzzi's in the main pool. The wood floor in the room needed some repairs. The main building could use a clean/coat of paint here and there. There is a pretty decent pool table upstairs but all the cues are totally broken which is a shame. leeches!
- Joris (9/5): Amazing location, luxury retreat - Amazing location, waterfall and natural slide nearby with natural pool. Long drive up there on small road, yet worth it.
There are only six rooms, which makes it a quiet retreat with plenty of personnel. We forgot some things in the room which they kindly sent to us later. Suren, many thanks. Prices are fairly high, yet can be explained by the remote location.
- Nimna (10/5): Overall great time at the Palmstone Retreat! - Mohammed showed us around and accommodated us very well! Sameera took us to the river right next to the retreat and swam with us. Indunil checked us out with no issues! And they had free shuttle service. Overall beautiful retreat and location, really enjoyed our time here. The food was a bit pricey and we weren’t able to really travel to buy food else where since it was a bit of a drive, but the food was very tasty!
- Frances (10/5): Exceptional - Very special place surrounded by nature
- Simon (10/5): Amazing hotel right in the middle of a rainforest. - Amazing hotel right in the middle of a rainforest. Lovely pool and rooms are amazing. The staff are very helpful and attentive and food is great. It is right in the middle of a rainforest which is amazing but makes it difficult to get to. Also not that easy just to go to a shop on a quick journey.
- Ls3116 (8/5): Good find for decent offer. - The location was remote, journey was exciting. Road getting to hotel isnt suitable for low cars but was already aware of this so we had no issues.
The room was very clean. Staff were helpful.
Facilities in the room were great, the heated plunge pool is a must. Food was a little on the expensive side but this was a little expected. Wifi speeds are slow. Room didnt have many useable plug sockets
- Muna (9/5): Superb -
- Nitin (10/5): Very comfortable stay in the middle of the jungle. - The location is amazing! Definitely worth every penny. The staff is very welcoming. The breakfast was delicious and rooms were quite spacious. Highly recommend to book this property if you are in Kithulgala.
- Lucy (9/5): Amazing escape in nature - Located in the middle of the rainforest, surrounded by nature…. Staff were amazing and the food was exceptional Road to get there can only be accessed by 4 x 4 or tuk tuk
- Hussain (10/5): Exceptional - Very wonderful experience at the top of the mountain in the middle of the jangle and kind staff.
Special thanks for Mohammed Anfas and restaurant cheif Siraganam. No thing, but the road is a little bit difficult since it is to go over the mountain across the jangle. However, the hotel brings a shuttle car to take us through the mountain route to the hotel.
- Chathuranga (10/5): One of my best destinations in the world -
- Motasem (10/5): Exceptional - Hidden Jewel in the middle of the jungle, very small hotel, huge room, very nice, food is unmatched, service is super great, one of my best stays in Sri Lanka.
- Sanduni (9/5): Superb -
- Kushan (8/5): Very good -
- Sanduni (9/5): Superb -
- Ganesh (10/5): A must have experience - After a long day of hiking, my wife and I really enjoyed relaxing in the plunge pool and steam room.
The staff (Mohammad and Vijay) were very responsive and helpful. We enjoyed having delicious string hoppers and curries for breakfast.
They arranged white water rafting and it was an experience of a lifetime for us. The AC was frequently getting switched off due to timer issues. Blind for the door to the swimming pool was broken and constantly hampered us from accessing the pool smoothly.
- Hetal (10/5): It was amazing. Induneels Service was great minus the bed bugs - The Srilankan Breakfast was amazing. Induneel was great with his service. Accept he wont serve us if the whole group was not there. that aspect didnt work with kids. There were bed bugs and we were totally bitten
- Ahmad (10/5): Best place to stay in Kitulgala - Everything about our stay was incredible. The staff made our stay extra special. Our room had a private pool which faced the jungle and it was very relaxing to enjoy a dip in the heated pool while being inside the jungle and listening to the river water flowing below. We had monkeys visiting our balcony in the morning. The retreat is facing the river and featured
a natural pool for guests to enjoy. Indoneel went above and beyond to ensure our comfort and pleasure, he has even surprised us with a romantic candle dinner. Lalith, the Chef, prepared amazing meals for us and was super kind and friendly too. The retreat had an accommodation for our driver which was a great gesture. I would highly recommend this place and would love to stay there again.
P.S. they said the food there was halal, which was a great addition Nothing, all was perfect
- Dhruti (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sara (10/5): Amazing hotel extraordinarily beautiful seething ,great chef and staff. - This was the most amazing hotel I have stayed in , beautiful setting and very calming , we swam in the river , the piling pool at our room was amazing as was the steam room. The food was great and the staff couldn’t do enough for you . I highly recommend this hotel if you fancy a bit of luxury. Make sure you take them up on the lift up in their four wheel drive we went up in a normal taxi and it was quite scary but they transported to our next location and was a great ride.
- Dilshan (8/5): Very good - Location , food and staff Access road , but they do have a shuttle service.
- Janica (10/5): Perfect for relax - We stayed in the Araliya Suite 24.2-27.2. Which was absolutely spotless and modern. We loved having our own private pool, sauna, and river view, where we even went swimming a few times.
The staff was incredibly friendly, especially Indunil. He arranged an adventure for us to the waterfalls, a short jungle hike, and also acted as a guide to a nearby cave. He also guided us to safely swim at the waterfall behind the hotel. And to top it all off, he arranged a candlelight dinner by the river! Five stars for service! Everything went smoothly in English.
- Moti (7/5): Unique location, but... - Unique location in the middle of nature, few steps from a river stream, which you can hear all the time. You can take day trips to two close waterfalls.
Huge and comfy isolated room. Very nicely designed but poorly maintained, with not enough attention to the small details.
The road to the location is very bad and relatively long. You can make it with a private car very slowly and carefully, but if you arrive after dark you better ask the hotel staff to peek you from the main road (although their vehicle is unpleasent to ride).
Woke up for million ants in the room. If you afraid of bugs, this is not the place for you in the middle of nature.
In my opinion doesn't worth the cost per value.
- Abdulrahman (10/5): Exceptional -
- Gal (10/5): Exceptional - just wonderful.
a luxury hotel in the middle of the jungle, good food and service.
they also offer a beautiful waterfall tour with an excellent guide called Samire.
An excellent experience. nothing
- Nazar (9/5): Superb - Location, atmosphere and staff Not easy to reach the property
- Sankha (8/5): Luxurious stay in the middle of a jungle - I went with my wife and four year old daughter. 6km small Road to the hotel is horrible. Need a high clearance vehicle. My honda fit nearly escaped any damages. Otherwise the stay was superb. Location is unique.rooms were great. Food was ok,slightly more expensive than similar class hotels, may be because of the location, wifi is terrible.my Dialog mobile had moderate level of signals, but no 3G. Any way,I actually staying unplugged. There is a nearby waterfall with clear water.its an unique experience. Can recommend to nature lovers and any body wishes to spend time in a calm and quiet environment.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This hotel was the highlight of our trip. The property is located quite a ways from the main road, deep inside the jungle; however ‘going the extra mile’ is completely worth the experience. Upon arrival, the hotel staff greeted us with a ‘Welcome’ juice and checked us in our bungalow, which was located right next to the small river running by the hotel. The room is very spacious, with floor to ceiling windows. The bathroom is huge with both a shower and a jet pool. The environment is very relaxing and tranquil, which feels nice after the everyday ‘hustle and bustle’ of life. Breakfast is amazing and prepared by a chef, who used to work at one of the Jumeriah resorts in Dubai! His milk rice and dhal curry was the best I have tasted in Sri Lanka! =) The hotel had an awesome tour guide, who took us on a hike to the most beautiful waterfall I have ever seen in my life! Unfortunately we have only stayed 1 night at this resort; however I would love to return in the near future. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone who wishes to get away from the ‘touristy’ stuff and have a truly unique and world class experience!
- Colin (8/5): Two night family stay during 3 week Trip to SL - This hotel is sold as a five star retreat but it isn't as well-maintained as it should be. The little things that you would expect weren't quite done.
The two jacuzzis next to the swimming pool weren't working and we were told that they were too expensive to repair, the jacuzzi with our room was initially freezing cold. The TV room (with pool table and outdoor terrance) was too hot and basically unused. Despite the large TV, there was no DVD player to play a film, etc. The daybeds on the balcony had no mattresses and cushions to sit on (by day two they appeared). There were therefore very simple fixes to this if people applied a little thought.
As a retreat, it is of course in the middle of nowhere. No complaints about that - but the hotel gave little assistance about what you could do. There is plenty of wildlife around and white water rafting, etc., but you have to find out about it practically by yourself. Having said that, the food was very good and the service at dinner excellent.
In all this, the best thing about the hotel was one of the staff - LAKMAL. He clearly has the guest's welfare at heart. He took us, including our girls (5 and 7) on a nature trail, organised a walk to a waterfall and rockpools to dive in/swim. He showed them how the locals extract rubber. Every morning he checks for wildlife to later show them to guests. He showed us where we could feed the fish. If they take his attitude (and a bit of thought) this could be a really great hotel!!!
- A (8/5): Nice relaxing resort in the middle of rainforests - Very peaceful and beautiful natural environment. Great food and service.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Excellent boutique hotel - Excellent boutique hotel and service in beautiful area, though a little remote. Rooms are luxurious and clean, service is excellent and friendly, food is very tasty.
- Kristy (10/5): Relaxed and thoroughly enjoyable - Palmstone Retreat is exceptional. We were here for our honeymoon and so glad we chose something different to the main resorts. An adventurous drive into the resort by 4x4 from town, approx 30 mins around windy roads, you arrive at paradise. Set in the middle of the rainforest is a boutique resort with 6 rooms, therefore with very few guests they have time to focus on what you want. The service is amazing, very attentive and there to assist with everything you need. Our room was sensational, a jacuzzi and sauna in our large room overlooking the river! All faculties are very clean. The chef does a great job cooking from a decent sized menu for a small resort, all meals very reasonably priced and tasty. They don't have a license to serve alcohol but no problems if you want to bring your own in (buy from the wine store or the staff will be happy to organise for you during the day if you wish!) We organized activities through the hotel including tuk tuk rides to white water rafting and canyoning through Action Lanka, we loved every bit of it. Also a waterfall tour by the hotel where we swam in fresh water with lovely views! DVD's also available to hire. We would highly recommend Palmstone Retreat and hope we will be able to return one day!
- Leann (10/5): Couples retreat - We loved our stay. It really gave us some down time after climbing mountains and rafting. The hotel room was massive: steam room and plung pool were in the room! We had a view of the river and the room was private. Lakmal offered us excellent service. Helping me into the river and taking us on a jungle walk. He even lit candles around the pool for us as a surprise whilst we had dinner! I'd highly recommend you take alcohol and snacks as you can't get these once at the hotel. The food is nice at the restaurant. You should leave your car at the bottom of the hill and call the hotel to pick you up. The road is currently being re-paved which will be less daunting of a ride to the secluded hotel. You can do rafting around this area but we stayed in the hotel. We loved it as a couple but there was also a family there and the kids enjoyed the large shared pool. We will be back if we can. I'd recommend more than 1 night here.
- Fam. Aurora (8/5): Idyllic & modern place in the middle of the Jungle - Very idyllic & modern property in the middle of the Jungle. Outstanding Sri Lankan food & great hotel stuff, which was very helpful during our stay.
Indunil and the manager took personal interest in taking care of our every need.
Our room was exquisite and the waterfall nearby is spectacular.
- AS (10/5): Incredible experience - Palm stone is a very special amazing experience on its own!! The room view is out of this world and the stuff is very helpful and friendly whom went to the extra mile to make our stay more than comfortable. Me and my wife loved the place and will definetly come again as soon as we can.
- Ahmad (10/5): Amazing place! - What can I say! The place is an mazing in the middle of the jungle with river running a few meters away! This place is one of the most beautiful places I ever seen! The rushing of the river water a few meters away was an enjoyable and very relaxing experience! The staff were very friendly and very helpful! the Manager; Mr. Tyrone was extremely helpful and very kind! He made an upgrade for us! The chef was so kind -- came to our table to ensure our food was done to our satisfaction! The staff made everything possible to ensure we are comfortable!
Thanks to Mr. Tyrone and the staff for making our stay a very enjoyable experience!
- Prasad (10/5): Great Place - It was a amazing experience. Location is very beautiful. Nelum suit is great with private pool and steam bath. Food was good too. Staff was very friendly. Overall great stay and waiting for the next visits. Highly recommend.
- Angela (8/5): Everything is so great! - If U like to experience Safari, Palmstone Retreat is the place. The hotel has been open for only 3 months when we were there. The hotel is very beautiful. U can look out into the woods and stream first thing when U wake up in your bed. Rooms are huge. The manager, Cavindi, is by far the most friendly one I have met. The only thing that need to improve is the road that lead from the main road to the hotel. It is very narrow, dark at night, bumpy and steep. It took us 40 mins one single trip everytime to go out and come back to the hotel. And other than checking in and out, we need to pay for the transportation(Rs4000, round trip)everytime when we go out. But overall everything is so great. We will definitely go back again.
