Guest Reviews
- Debra (8/5): - Close to everything. Excellent shower.
- Karen (10/5): - Loved the Inn and especially the delivered breakfast baskets. Big room with seating options.
Our only issue was lack of dining options in the area. The only 2 full service restaurants were both closed on Monday AND Tuesday, the 2 nights we were there. Went to a very busy overcrowded restaurant in Hot Springs one night. Thank goodness for the Milk House Market for sandwiches and pizza!
- Debra (8/5): - Good
- Alvin (10/5): - Beautiful property! We loved the hot springs. Convenient and close to many activities
- Christopher (10/5): - Very quaint, charming. Felt a little like a step back to a simpler time. Just the ticket for a getaway to clear the mind and relax the body. Thanks!
Two minor tips: please upgrade the in-room coffee cups - their handles are too small and your hands get burned holding them. Also, Barley Room bed and pillows are VERY soft - not healthy for older backs and hips.
- Nancy (10/5): - What a beautiful place! The room was very comfortable. The breakfast was wonderful and served to you in your room right on time daily The staff was very kind and accommodating! We will definitely stay at the Inn again! Highly recommended!!
- Eric (10/5): - My husband and myself stayed in the Rye room located in the Miller house. Everything was perfect. So much space. Really enjoyed ourselves hanging out at the pool, walking around the property and shopping at the gift shop. My favorite part was having breakfast delivered to our room. We will definitely be back.
- George (10/5): - If your looking for a nice quite place to stay then this is it. The staff is excellent and go out of their way to accommodate. If we are ever in the are again we would definitely stay there.
- Danny (10/5): - Amazing location
- Tammy (8/5): - The pictures show it as a flowery place to stay, lots of blooming plants. Going in early spring those flowers haven't bloomed yet so I was a little disappointed but understood. The closeness of all the houses was neat however you have to drive a bit to find gas and food if you don't make a reservation at the Water Wheel. Living in a city this was a big change for me. I would have like to have more insight on what other locations were good for visiting for lunch or dinner.
- mary (6/5): Beautiful inn but beware certain rooms - Overall the inn is lovely, but I would not stay in the Croft room again and would mostly write off the free breakfast.
The Croft room said "mountain view" on hotels.com but it just looked out onto the post office and the main house.
On the inn's website it advertised a wood fireplace (which was a selling point for us) but it was actually gas.
The heat in the house that Croft and other rooms are in is central, so you can't control the heat from your room. You're supposed to text a number to have them change it but I didn't want to get in a thermometer war with the other guests...
One of the biggest turnoffs was the toilet - it is situated so you can't sit straight on it without your knees hitting a radiator box. They should consider renovating this.
The shower could also use an update - it was pretty grody.
Also not outlets available by the bedside on either side - pretty annoying.
Breakfast was brought to the room, which was nice, but it was very basic and didn't seem homemade for the most part - mini breakfast burrito (seemed similar to the frozen ones you can buy in bulk), bulk muffins, vanilla sweetened yogurt with granola, OJ, coffee.
Again the overall setting is beautiful, I just wouldn't stay in this particular room and would be careful to study the pictures of the other rooms, especially the bathroom. I also would try to book 24 hours in advance to get the chance to order a nicer version of breakfast (but not sure that would be possible).
- Kathryn (10/5): - Our room was clean, spacious and attractively decorated. Warm Springs was a very quiet community.
- Pamela (6/5): Ok if you are into rustic accommodations - Accommodations were average compromised by using an old building.
- Linda (10/5): - We enjoyed the unique setting, comfortable room, and outstanding food, both at the restaurant and in our room where a delicious breakfast was brought to us. We definite plan to return!
- Alberto (10/5): - Extremely romantic and cozy place. Recommend for a couples retreat.
- Farzaneh (8/5): - Everything was to the expectation
- Cindy (10/5): - The staff were very friendly and accommodating. They even got us a driver to the Homestead for drinks when the local transportation company was too busy. The breakfasts were good and The Waterwheel restaurant was Excellent!
- Erica (8/5): - Honestly, their concept of using historic buildings as inns is fantastic and very quaint. The restaurant is amazing, and the complimentary breakfast is well done. Great staff too and wonderful location. Absolutely stunning area. Conversely, I would say there is a difference between "antique chic" and "antique tired." The decor needs a bit of updating, and the window air conditioner in the Wheat Room is not adequate to cool the space when it is full sun and warm outside. The seating area outside our house was overgrown with weeds and in dire need of some cleaning and refinishing. Lovely place but could use some attention to make it inviting for guests. Also, after viewing the restaurant's menu online, I found that they offered a vegetarian option for dinner which is why I chose it. When I arrived it was not on the menu nor was it available. I was asked when I made the dinner reservation if I had any dietary restrictions, but I didn't specify any given that the menu offered me an option. Not one vegetarian entree so beware if you follow a plant based diet.
- Barclay (10/5): Way better than staying at the Homestead - So much nicer and also better on the wallet than to stay at the Homestead. Lovely, peaceful ambiance, a cute and refreshing pool to refresh, and great food and service. Hand delivery of breakfast to each room was an added plus.
- Bruce (8/5): - Beautiful room with balcony. Excellent service.
- SAMUEL (10/5): - Such a pleasant place to visit.
- Luis (10/5): - Great place
- anne (10/5): - Unique property in a lovely area.
- Sarah (8/5): - Charming stay, very relaxing, beautiful location.
- Margaret (8/5): - The Inn at Grist Mill Square has been around for 40 yrs and I have been a visitor a dozen times. Shabby chic describes the decor. It is clean and well appointed. The food is excellent. The waterwheel has fallen into disrepair sadly and the place needs some paint but the soul is peaceful and it’s a lovely place for respite.
- Nicki (10/5): - The restaurant and breakfast were first class. Excellent.
Great location.
- Susan (10/5): - Love the character and history of the inn. Friendly staff, great location and a fabulous restaurant on site.
- Meredith (10/5): - We absolutely loved our stay at the Inn. Room was perfect and staff were so friendly and accommodating. Miller was also an added bonus to us animal lovers. Cannot wait to come back for another stay!
- CHRIS (10/5): - Very nice... Had a great dinner at the Waterwheel restaurant. Our room was clean and comfortable and it had a wood-burning fireplace which we used. They provide the wood and start the fire for you. The whole stay was perfect we had no issues. Planning to go back in the Spring.
- Bethany (10/5): History, comfort and nature in a romantic setting! - Lovely hotel, great location next to the warm creek flowing from the nearby hot spring! So worth it!
- cathy (10/5): - We really loved this property. It was beautiful in the fall and the perfect peaceful getaway. Our room was the Oat room, with a living room and bedroom. Very comfortable. They delivered breakfast each morning in a cute wire basket and added a pot of coffee at our request. The bar and the bartender were excellent and the restaurant was great. Very quiet place, nice tiny town great for walking.
- Kiesha (10/5): - This property is made up of historic buildings in Warm Springs and is nestle in lovely green forest covered trees. Lovely the character of the rooms and the nice touch of having a light breakfast delivered to your room when you call. While the Waterwheel Restaurant is the only one in town it’s so worth it!!! Each meal there was delicious.
- Greg (8/5): - Great
- John (10/5): - This was a perfect alternative to staying at a mega resort. The on-site restaurant was excellent and the little bar area was fun. I’ll definitely stay there again.
- Melanie (10/5): - We stayed in the Loft, the room was clean and cozy. If you like the outdoors there are many different trails convenient to the Inn and it is a short drive to other dining options.
- Darryl (6/5): - The location of the inn is lovely and the restaurant was very nice. Our room, however, was quite disappointing. While I realize that these very old buildings are going to have some “patina”, I believe the condition of the furnishings and other details should be better for the cost. The lighting in the room was insufficient, my husband and I rolled to the middle of the mattress, and the tub/shower combo was uncomfortable with poor water pressure. The towels were large and absorbent but toilet paper was thin and cheap and there were no facial tissues in the room. I know the intention was good but the innkeepers missed the mark on our room. I know other rooms at the inn are far superior as I was invited to look at one at check out. I suggest paying for the nicer rooms if you intend to stay here.
- Thomas (10/5): - Great location, well appointed room, great service.
- Harlan (10/5): Wonderful & Relaxing - My wife and I celebrated part of our 29th Wedding Anniversary at The Inn at Gristmill Square in the Singapore Suite. From reservation to checkout, the hospitality was off the charts!
From the moment we arrived, we were well taken care of. They made us feel like family they hadn’t seen yet. There must be something good in the water there.
The Chef prepared food was OUTSTANDING. The breakfast we received at the door the next morning in that cool little basket was exceptional also. We even had the opportunity to talk to John (Chef/Innkeeper) while eating his intricately prepared scrumptious food.
The people and the surrounding atmosphere made for a wonderful and relaxed celebration during our wedding anniversary weekend.
I said all that to say, that you have to treat yourself to a stay at Gristmill Square/WaterWheel Restaurant. Also, take in some sightseeing while you’re there.
You deserve it.
Keep up the great work guys/gals! See you next time.

- Kelly (10/5): - This is an absolutely charming inn, embracing history and hospitality all in one stay. The area is just beautiful and the setting is dreamy. The antique charm in the room we stayed in, The Quilt Suite, was amazing but still had everything modern needed, including coffee for morning, mini fridge, updated bathroom, hairdryer, ironing board and of course wifi and tv as well. We had dinner at the restaurant and it was absolutely delicious presented beautifully and the atmosphere of the restaurant was just perfect! And let me end on saying the yummy breakfast coming in the basket to our door in the morning was a ta-da perfect ending for an absolutely perfect stay! I can’t wait to plan a trip back for longer than an overnight stay.
- Claudine (10/5): - We stayed in the Silo room. It was quaint but very comfortable. The breakfast was brought to our room. I was surprised that the food was hot. The yogurt was excellent and the muffin was homemade. We had fresh orange juice and eggs. The staff was very nice and accommodating. Was well pleased with our stay.
- Tom (10/5): Excellent place to unwind - Fantastic experience. Staff was super helpful.
Breakfast is delivered to your room. The whole area is quiet and relaxing.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The “Board” room was fabulous and I will definitely stay here again. The only downside was the parking availability. I got in town late and it appeared there were a bunch of guest at the restaurant that weren’t actually staying on the property so the their excess cars made finding a space tough. It wasn’t a big problem as I was able to park across the street at a neighboring building (not sure if I was supposed to or not but I had to) and walked across to my room but had to make multiple trips for my things needed in the room. Overall a great stay though.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Our birthday trip - Enjoyed our stay and the breakfast provided at the room door was great.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - What a lovely charming place. It was a perfect stopping place on our trip to North Carolina. The room was charming. We enjoyed a swim in the pool before dinner. The breakfast delivered in a basket was delicious and we ate outside at the tables in the sunshine. I highly recommend the Gristmill Inn.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The "sign-in" was easy and quick. The agent was very friendly and provided helpful information about the area. Morning breakfast (juice, egg casserole, bun, yogurt with blueberries) was and delivered within 10 minutes of ordering. Our bedroom and bath was clean and comfortable and included TV, coffee maker and refrigerator. The venue was pleasant, quiet and almost like stepping back in time, yet included all the amenities of home. The outside area of the house and lawn needed attention. (cleaning/painting the entrance area and porch including weeding the front and side yard. Also, the windows needed washing) Another PLUS: The venue is located in Warm Springs which makes it very close to the The Omnie Hotel and Douthat State Park. We do recommend The Inn at Gristmill for a fun weekend getaway to explore Warm Springs and surrounding points of interest.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A unique step back in time with modern amenities. Staff was very accommodating and our stay was relaxing. A short walk over to the spa was a treat not to miss.
- Kristopher (10/5): Yes, stay here- You’ll thank me later - We were venturing thru the West Virginia and Virginia countryside and needed a place to stay. The Inn at Gristmill Square came up as an option and we jumped at the opportunity. We arrived late and the B&B was well prepared to receive us. They had great instructions following a quick call and the room was large, clean, unique and updated. We had the Board Room and truly enjoyed our short stay. Breakfast was delivered in a basket to our room (blueberry pancakes with bacon and a yogurt parfait plus coffee and OJ). Seating was available in the square. I would definitely stay here again and have already spread the word about my stay. The area is off the beaten path which is nice if you really want to slow down. The service was friendly and helpful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This was a total downhome feel and the owners were very personable. They welcomed us with our 3 kids for a great weekend stay right by the pool. Thanks !
- Dana (10/5): Breakfast Baskets - Breakfast basket was so delicious and was delivered to our door every morning. The pastries were so flaky and light. What an awesome perk.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A rustic and quaint inn . A perfect place to relax with friends for a get away
- Larry (10/5): Excellent place to stay! - The Inn at Gristmill was a very nice stay even though initially we were disappointed there was landscape renovation. We did understand though - because if its going to be done spring is a great time! The accommodations were exactly as we hoped, an upgrade from a regular hotel and the continental breakfast was super! We had Quiche , pastry & yogurt one morning and Sausage Sandwich, pastry and yogurt the 2nd morning. We enjoyed the beautiful area.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I loved the Croft room decor and the color was teal one of my favorites! The furniture was antique and the bathtub was was amazing! We are going back in the Falk so we can use the fireplace.
- Michael (10/5): Fabulous inn and food!!!! - Great place!!!! Restaurant is amazing with a unique setting and wine cellar in an old grist mill. Morning continental basket of goodies was phenomenal! Lots of history in the area and nice to stay with a local business instead of the corporate Homestead, which is beautiful but not the same country feel as here.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - we really loved our stay here. had dinner at the mill house. it was all just perfect!
- Lynne (10/5): - Every room is unique; we were in a round room with a huge private bathroom attached. King bed was very comfortable. Two side chairs allowed us to pull up to the prelaid logs in the fireplace and enjoy a small fire in the evening. Breakfast was AWESOME! Hot sausage biscuits, scones, OJ, little jarss of yogurt & fresh fruit all delivered to the room in a wire basket shortly after the call to the desk! Quiet and beautiful property!
- Denise (10/5): Quaint & Luxurious - This was one of the most pleasant stays I have ever had! They bring your breakfast...to your room, how amazing! I have only ever stayed in one Inn prior to this and I am happy to say I am off the chain hotel bandwagon. From friendly staff, abundance of clean towels, mositurizing, eco friendly & good smelling toiletries to the amazing breakfast as well as a beautiful landscape, my stay at the Gristmill Inn was excellent.
- Diane (8/5): - A wonderful location with excellent staff, a delicious breakfast delivered to your room in a basket, and a fantastic restaurant, The Waterwheel, on site. The property is looking a little tired and could use some maintenance and upgrades, but it is quaint, rooms are very large, and we would stay there again.
- AM (10/5): - The Inn was a secret retreat that I feel lucky to have found. The quaint and quiet environment nestled in the Virginia/ W. Virginia mountains is a gem. I can't wait to go back and stay in another room. What a great place. Clean! I was surprised I didn't have to self clean like I do at every other establishment I stay. Seriously beautiful stay.
- James (10/5): - Excellent staff service and beautiful property! Staff was very friendly and accommodating!
- John (10/5): A lovely country Inn - We love this place and always make a point of going to the onsight restaurant "The Waterwheel" for our Anniversary. This year we decided to stay a night in one of their lovely rooms before heading back home to northern Virginia. A very nice continental breakfast was provided which just added to the quaintness of the place. We plan to make this a yearly tradition.
- Joe (10/5): - This is an excellent place to stay. the staff were all extremely friendly and efficient. It was great to call the office every morning to let them know my wife and I were up and ready for breakfast and very shortly they brought breakfast to our room. The room was very nice and the grounds are very well kept. We enjoyed sitting out in the yard and relaxing in Adirondack chairs. They also have an exceptional gourmet restaurant right there.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great Girls Weekend - The area is gorgeous! We were able to have a nice, relaxing girls weekend!
- Sandy (10/5): - Really quaint place. Best part was “breakfast in bed”, where we could order a breakfast basket delivered to our room. It was fantastic! Very friendly staff as well.
- Verified traveler (8/5): overall very good experience - I would have given this one 5*'s, but I experienced a little attitude from the girl when I checked in and again when I booked the restaurant. That said, lovely spot, great pool and the food and wine pairings first rate. The basket of goodies for breakfast in your room, was wonderful. I would definitely stay again and next time be a little more prepared in case I encounter little miss smart arse again.
- Stan (10/5): Great Great Great - Amazing place. Room great service great location great. Food great.
- Barbara (8/5): - The Waterwheel Resturant at the inn was excellent. Great choice of entrees and food was surperb. Wait staff was courteous and stayed right on top of things. I would recommend this Resturant for fine dining
- Webb (8/5): - The creek that runs in front of the house I stayed in was really nice. The sound was relaxing at night with a window raised to just enjoy.
Really good food at the WaterWheel Restaurant. I had the salmon entree and a delicious house salad. Highly recommend the place if you visit Warm Springs.
The town is really quaint and unlike any town in Virginia that I have visited. A nice quiet town. Low key and perfect if you want to just relax, go hiking, play golf or sit outside under the beautiful trees surrounding all the houses owned by the Inn at Gristmill Square.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We totally enjoyed everything about our stay. no complaints at all. The entire staff made us feel very at home. It was our 25th wedding anniversary.
- Paul D (10/5): Nice day trip - Very nice place to stay. Attended performance at Garth Newel. Had dinner here. Will repeat.
- Mike (10/5): Great Place - Excellent place for a little getaway time.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Attentive and pleasant staff. Unique decor, comfortable bed, quiet location. Dinner at the affiliated restaurant was superb!
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The location was central to where we were visiting. The Suite was very clean and the temperature was pleasing. There were a few stains on the carpet that I guess could not be removed. For the amount charged for a Suite- I would have thought there would have been a table to eat at. We had to eat our continental breakfast on a love seat hunched over a small coffee table. There was a refrigerator in the Suite but if you wanted coffee you have to walk to another building to a Keurig machine. The bath soap was so harsh it made my eyes sting. The shampoo however was lovely. I have slept on beds more comfortable and the pillows offered no support.
- Meredith (10/5): Great Breakfast! - What a comfortable room for a great price. The warm breakfast with fresh juice and delicious berry yogurt really put this place over the top! We felt like we were Hobbits visiting the Shire. Beautiful little place.
- Betsy (6/5): - Wonderful breakfast. Nice room, but needed more light. Carpets needed cleaning. Friendly staff.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The property was cozy and inviting, the furnishings were period,We enjoyed it very much the restaurant the service is great
The one thing that was slightly off putting was the front desk was a little cold I didn’t ask how our stay was when we left, not such a big deal but would’ve been nice if they asked
- Kristin (8/5): Overnight in a quiet town. - The Inn was very quiet! The room was comfortable and spacious. The wheelhouse restaurant was pricy but the food was amazing.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Come here to relax. Hike some, nature. Didn't try the spa, but pool was nice. Just what I was looking for.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Room was large and beautiful. Staff was friendly. Price was excellent.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Loved the original grist mill restaurant...great dinner...so peaceful
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We loved the spaciousness of the room and it was delightful. We plan on making this an annual trip to the Gristmill Inn and dine at their wonderful restaurant - the Waterwheel.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I thought everything about the stay was so neat and unique. We had a great time.
Dinner at the waterwheel was fantastic, breakfast was so fun and yummy.
loved that you could explore the grounds.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Charming B&B with excellent staff. The office was closed when I arrived, but restaurant staff were very helpful. My room was in an older home and was very clean and comfortable.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Being able to regulate the temperature in the room would be a great iimprovement. At first it was too cold and later in the night it warmed up and the winter down comforters were way way too hot. What about fixing the windows with screens so they could be opened and the cool air most nights could be accessed?
- Karen (10/5): Beautiful rural retreat - Great, fun place to stay in beautiful rural WV. Lots of spa/restaurants to go to but you'll want to plan ahead with them if you want to do that. Very clean, lots of little amenities that added to the retreat experience.
- Denice (10/5): - Everything was great except for the bed. Every time one of us moved it woke the other. Too much wiggle there. But the rest of the stay was wonderful from breakfast to plenty of places to sit and chill. We enjoyed ourselves
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Quiet, quaint, and easily accessible to the many wonderful things to see in Bath County.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - This B&B is in a small town and housed in several old houses. Breakfast was brought to my room the next morning and was excellent. It was a very calming experience.
- Verified traveler (8/5): We like it - The accommodations were very good. The location of the toilet in the open was something to get use to. The breakfast served was excellent and plenty. Hope to return.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very friendly staff and very helpful accommodations! Will definitely return!
- robert (10/5): Charming place - Charming place. Love the mountain streams running through the property.
- Brian (10/5): Great alternative to the Homestead Resort - Enjoyed the pleasant surroundings of Warm Springs. Our room was very nice, well maintained and thought out. Would have liked to have stayed longer. Photos of the Inn on their website are accurate. Included breakfast was light - but good.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Beautiful, peaceful, tranquil and serene. Exactly what we were looking for!
- Verified traveler (10/5): Staff is wonderful - very friendly & helpful - Highly recommend - will stay here again for future fishing trips
- Barbar (10/5): Small town - Fabulous hotel and restaurant - We spent our Anniversary at The Gristmill in Warm Springs, VA. The quiet was wonderful as was the hotel staff and the WaterWheel Restaurant.
- Art (10/5): A charmer - Charming hotel & restaurant in a charming village. Generous breakfast brought to your room.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Arrived later than expected but they had everything ready for us in a easy to understand package. Room was wonderful.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Bath County Retreat - The rooms are cozy and quiet. A great place for a retreat. The food and service at the Water Wheel restaurant are 5 star. Exploring the outdoors during the day and enjoying the restaurant at night make for a very enjoyable time away. Don't miss Warm Spirit Spa across the street, amazing.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely village, and a beautiful place with a wonderful restaurant. Hasn't quite been fully transformed into what it could be yet, but well worth a stay.
- Reba (8/5): - Nice B&B in Warm Springs, Virginia. Very clean room and comfortable bed.
- Michael (10/5): A night in the mountains - A very pleasant stay. Service was excellent.
