Guest Reviews
- Clive (6/5): - Limited dining options, steak good but overdone
- Helen (8/5): - Really excellent vegan choices on the dinner menu. Best I know of.
- Sally (8/5): - The room had everything that we needed and all of the staff were very friendly. Great breakfast and the menu for dinner was good.
- Helen (8/5): Ludlow food festival break - Staff at the Salwey Arms very accommodating to make you comfortable.
Ww enjoyed our one night away.
- angela (10/5): - Very welcoming staff
Lovely garden with plenty of seating
- Mike (10/5): A great place to stay - The location and layout of the hotel was excellent. We only had a cooked breakfast here and that was excellent and cooked well.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice staff and great food.
No shower in the room, no iron in the room.
Located very close to a main road with single glazed windows. Very loud
Seemed to be understaffed, a lot of waiting
Very basic table and chairs in the restaurant area, but they do have a nice snug
- Ian (10/5): - Lovely stay with good service and food.
- Mervyn (10/5): - The staff were very friendly,
The food was first class
Great place to stay
- Sally (10/5): Great stay at The Salwey Arms - We had a fantastic stay at Salwey Arms!
Staff are amazing, went above and beyond to meet our needs to ensure our short break went to plan, even offering to transport us into Ludlow as we were struggling to secure a taxi. Which in the end they managed to sort for us, both there and back enabling us to attend pre-booked live concert at Ludlow Castle.
We were able to check-in earlier than planned, our room was cosy, spotlessly clean with everything we could possibly need. The bed was extremely comfortable with high quality bedding, which enabled a great nights sleep. Breakfast was delicious, cooked fresh to order and the menu provided a lovely range of options.
A great place to stay!
- Kevin (10/5): - Lovely setting and friendly staff. Met with a smile although they were busy, comfortable room and we were very relaxed overall. Thank you.
- Richard Stephen (10/5): Great stay - The staff and owners were extremely friendly. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The food was excellent and the stay included an excellent breakfast with as much coffee (or if you prefer, tea) as needed.
- A J (8/5): - Practical and convienient for work
- Colin (10/5): - Really friendly staff , good size room , comfortable bed , the entire property and grounds clean and pleasing to the eye
- Nicholas (10/5): - Hotel room was very comfortable and we enjoyed an evening meal in the restaurant. Excellent breakfast. Highly recommended
- Verified traveler (10/5): A real gem ! - We had an absolutely lovely experience at the Salwey Arms this week. The hotel was spotlessly clean, the food was excellent and the service throughout our stay was warm and welcoming. A special mention to the owners, Ben and Jack, who went above and beyond to make us feel at home. Ben even took the time to have a personal chat with us - a genuinely kind and engaging gesture that made our visit feel even more special.
We wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Salwey Arms to others, and are already looking forward to returning. A real gem!
- Marcus (6/5): - We didnt actually stay stay at the hotel but paid for friends to stay and had dinner with them on the evening. Our frends found the room ok but they didn't rave about it.
The meal was ok but we did have a very long wait, over an hour, without any updates. We ordered a bottle of red wine which came as an opened bottle with some removed.
How can somone serve a bottle wine and not notice its opened and not full. They did replace it but the apology lacked conviction.
All in all everthing was okish but not special.
Breakfast was included in the price, but they had an early start and breakfast didnt start until 7.30. We did ask if they could provide a takeaway breakfast but this apparently wasnt possible. Disappointing. Surely they could have prepared this on the evening ready for them next morning. Are our friends the only people who need an early start?
There was also some confusion on how they.were going to be able to exit the building. Again there did not seem to be a policy, procedure for such events.
We expected better for the price.
- Richard (8/5): - venue is located on a cross roads of the A49 between Ludlow and Leominster which is a fairly busy junction at many times of day & night.
Also located next to a 24hour Asda service station and travel lodge which created vehicle move movements at all times of day & night.
We ate in the Salway hotel each night in addition to Breakfast and found the food & service helpful and attentive and the room adequate for our needs.
We had been to the hotel previously and found it suitable to our needs.
- Jane (6/5): - Room was small.
Noise from the extractor unit when the windows were open. We needed the windows open as the room was hot because it was so small.
- Frances (10/5): A brief but enjoyably stay. - An excellent experience, the room was quiet and the windows opened fully to let in fresh air on a warm evening
The staff were welcoming and friendly. The food was delicious including the generous cooked breakfast that was included in the charge for the stay. I would happily use Salwey Arms again.
- Gaynor (6/5): - Road noise in twin room gave us a poor night's sleep.
- Ann (8/5): - All good, the only let down was no internet, and as a working stay , no work could be done, But that was the only down side. My evening meal and breakfast were excellent.
- Gail (10/5): Lovely pub to stay - Good location for exploring the area . Helpful friendly staff. Room was clean and comfortable. Good food . Free parking
- Clare (6/5): - We were in the smallest room, Tern; the only one available out of the 5 rooms at the property when we booked. No issue with that at all however it felt like it had been overlooked and was given the least attention. The single glazed sash window frames were dirty and dusty, especially in the shower room. There were cobwebs around the ceiling and the carpet was badly stained. It wasn’t possible to put make up on or dry hair in front of a mirror due to the way the furniture and plugs were positioned. Upon arrival , it was unseasonably cold and the heating in our room and shower room wasn’t working. A plumber was called out the following day but our bathroom was unpleasantly cold, with no means to warm or dry towels. Extra ones were provided but overall it didn’t make for a comfortable stay. When we checked out we asked for a reduction on the room rate as nothing had been taken off to reflect the issues we’d encountered. We were told that Expedia still hadn’t paid the hotel for our room (not sure how this had anything to do with us); and we received a small reduction. All of the staff, apart from the woman who served breakfast on our final morning and checked us out, were friendly and helpful. The bed was comfortable and the plumbing problem was fixed eventually but it impacted upon the first evening and first day of our stay. An apology at checkout would have gone a long way but we were made to feel like we were being unreasonable.
- Denise (8/5): - For our one night stay there is nothing that wasn't good about this property. The staff were kind and helpfull. The location was perfect for our visit to Ludlow Castle and town. Would definitely recommend.
- Anne (10/5): Very nice stay - Lovely place, rooms and public spaces immaculate. Dinner and breakfast were great. The only thing that was a bit disappointing was the view from our room, we were looking out onto the kitchen roof, complete with ventilation ducts, didn’t spoil out stay but some screening would have been nice. We had a nice stay and the staff were lovely.
- Sarah (10/5): - Lovely pub and accommodation- pleasantly decorated, friendly welcome, food was ok.
- Robert (8/5): Lovely hotel. - Great accomodation, staff were excellent. Food was really good plenty of options. Only complaint was the road noise in the room as no double glazing and lots of heavy traffic going past..
- Graham (10/5): - This old coaching inn has been well revamped, service is first class. The food was excellent with good response to individual needs. Although pricey the rooms were up to a high standard.
The roll top bath, with no screen, was a triumph of design over functionality. There was nowhere to put the soap! Having a shower without flooding the floor was tricky.
The Chef produced first class dishes on every occasion.
- Margaret (10/5): - Lovely clean room
Tasty breakfast
Polite staff
- Steve (10/5): Lovely stay - Excellent staff. Room was comfortable and spotlessly clean. Bathroom had underfloor heating. Bathroom had a bit of a damp smell but wasn’t a problem. Breakfast was delicious.
- Neil (10/5): Perfect get away. - Very pleasant friendly people, plenty of free parking. A real up to date clean bar, a comfy relaxing atmosphere. The room was clean and all upto date, again very comfy and we both had a good nights sleep. We had an evening meal snd breakfast, and it was beautiful, well presented , well proportional and very very tasty. A big thank you to all, i made our stay very enjoyable.
- Nadia (10/5): - Quite.
- Marian (8/5): - Very convenient location. Hot water pipes under our floor kept the room too warm so we turned radiators off. Couldn’t open windows as 24hour petrol station one side and an industrial unit the other. Shaggy rugs on top of the carpet were unnecessary and must be impossible to keep clean with multiple use from other visitors. Drinks expensive and dinner overpriced. Breakfast was amazing and beautifully presented.
- Kevin (8/5): - Lovely place with fantastic staff. Located near a busy junction so was a bit noisy but nothing major. A bit out of town and we struggled to get a taxi but the staff managed to get us one in the end. Great breakfast.
- Margaret (10/5): - Lovely breakfasts.
- Erika (8/5): Nice food, roadside room noisy, WiFi a problem - Friendly staff, nice food, erratic WiFi (my phone was eventually fine on it after initial probs, my laptop couldn't ever get on and partner's phone wouldn't go on after first evening). We had a roadside room which was a nice room but very very noisy as the road was so busy and only single glazing due to being an old property
- ROSA (10/5): - The staff were so welcoming and the room was comfortable and really well designed. Loved the little touches like designer cups in the rooms. Great bed linen. Lovely and clean. Food was delicious. Breakfast top notch.
- Gordon (6/5): Was just ok..... - Great location.
First impressions were good, we arrived and went to check in, not obvious where to go, no signage.
I explained to a gentleman that we'd like to check in, ask our name and then took us to our room, no warmth of welcome.......Our room was The Onny which was small but adequate. Unfortunately this room overlooks the flat roof and yard of the kitchen, with a huge air extractor on the roof, which of course was noisey with a constant hum.
I mentioned this when we went to dinner to the same gentleman, along with an issue that the temperature gauge on the shower which was beyond stiff. I had to ask my husband to come and alter this. No real response or interest really.
Dinner was ok - nothing out of the ordinary, again no interest from any of the staff we encountered from dinner through to breakfast. It's a shame as the pub is nice it could be so much more with a smiley engaging team.
This might be the norm for the area, but for a local pub with rooms I chose this rather than a city hotel to get a friendly service.
The only positive interaction was a very cheerful housekeeping lady who wished us a nice day as we left our room.
- Maureen (10/5): - Very friendly welcome, all information given on check in, room clean and comfortable, staff very warm and friendly. Had starters and nibbles, plenty of well cooked food, just what we wanted. Some traffic through the night but to be expected on a crossroad, ear plugs provided and a fan but we didn’t need to use either.
Good breakfast times and an excellent hearty breakfast, brilliant service from a very lovely waitress.
Would highly recommend hence 5 stars
- Mr (10/5): - Very friendly and helpful staff the property very clean.
- Shelby (10/5): - Nice cosy hotel, comfy bed and an amazing breakfast.
- David (8/5): - Hotel good, food and beverages were good
- Grace (8/5): - Had a comfortable stay, staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast tasty. Visited during a very cold snap and a little cold in room.
- Penny (10/5): - Our room was spotlessly clean-but we have never slept on such lumpy uncomfortable pillows! Apart from this-it's a great place to stay.
- Sarah (8/5): - We had a pleasant stay, but room was a bit small and so was the door as you stepped down to the room and had to mind your head.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Excellent stay near Ludlow - Excellent hotel and furnished to a high standard. Breakfast was delicious too. Very good value for money
- Verified traveler (8/5): Short break - The room was spacious and the bed comfortable. The food was good and reasonably priced but service was rather slow. One negative point, over which the hotel has no control, is the stream of lorries passing to the side of the property. The noise was intrusive, even with the windows closed. Helpfully, the hotel supplied disposable earplugs for night-time.
- Arthur (10/5): An excellent night’s stopover. - We spent an overnight stop there on the way to the Forest of Dean. Sunday evening and the restaurant was quite busy. I had the best roast pork there in a long time. The breakfast was also excellent with my wife, who is a veggie, rating it 10/10.
- douglas (10/5): Great all round - Great service , great food and lovely to meet Stanley , thanks to you all
- Mick (10/5): - Very comfortable and a good location
- Cathy (4/5): Noisy night and busy location - So, this is a difficult review to write as the cleanliness was v good , the staff were very helpful and the food was good . However there were significant things which affected our experience . There was a very large extractor unit outside out window which meant there was considerable noise all night . Ear plugs were provided in the room so this must be a common problem . In addition the Hotel is situated right next to a very brightly lit fuel garage , which was my husband’s view while we ate in the restaurant. It seemed impossible to avoid until I closed the blinds at which point we could both relax . These things are important to point out when making your selection of places to stay . I would have chosen a different hotel if i had been made aware
- Wendy Lodwick (8/5): - I particularly like the breakfast which was superb. The room was very comfortable and very clean. The pub is set back from the A49 which makes it noisy at the peak hours but it is also very convenient.
- Martyn (8/5): 3rd stay at the Salway arms - Great place to stay , friendly staff , good food and close to Ludlow . Only downside is the roads around the hotel are very busy and there is a fair amount of traffic noise but this would not deter us from staying again.
- Roger (10/5): excellent would rate 5" - This is a lovely place to stay the decore cleaning and the friendliness of the staff was superb and such a homely atmosphere. Our room was large and beautifully decorated even had a fan as room did get very hot only down side was noise of traffic outside but we would still stay again Food was well presented and we enjoyed all meals
- Christine (10/5): Nice hotel. - The hotel looked a bit rundown from the outside but how wrong we were. Given and warm welcome by staff. Nice big room.
- Ann (6/5): - Service in the restaurant was slow. Breakfast was poor - no fresh juice or yoghurt, limited choice of cereal. Cannot comment on cooked breakfast.
The bedroom and en suite were clean and in a good decorative condition.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Easy to get to. Convenient for my destination. Friendly staff and good food. Will be going back to this hotel.
- Jacqueline (10/5): Great overnight stay - One night stay - staff really friendly. We stayed in the tern room which was lovely and spacious - bed was comfortable. We had our evening meal there which was fantastic. Great breakfast too! Would happily stay here again
- Michael (10/5): - A well situated, professionally run hotel. We felt extremely comfortable in the current Covid scenario.
The evening meal and breakfast were excellent. It is not surprising that the restaurant is popular.
- Robert (8/5): Would stay again but in a different room - Stayed in ONNY Room, also known as the “Hobbits” room, due to the bedroom doorway being 5 ft tall with a deep step into the room. I’m 6’2, yes I did bang and cut my head.
The room is small but clean, the shower is over the bath, could do with a handrail to assist stepping out of the bath.
Outside the bedroom windows are the extractor fans for the kitchen, earplugs are provided in the bedside draws by the hotel.
The rooms were not serviced during the 4 day stay, apparently conforming with Covid rules, but not experienced that in other establishments.
Nice bar area, sitting room( snug room) and outside seating. Plenty of free car parking.
The breakfast is excellent, the staff are all more than helpful, evening meals were good but fish and chips rather over cooked not recommended, the chunky chips were just ordinary chips.
Would perhaps stay again but definitely in a different room.
The road outside the Salwey is extremely busy with many HGVs .
- Rich (10/5): - The room was nice and cozy. The bathroom was lovely and warm.
The staff were all very welcoming and helpful. The view outside the window wasn't the best but overall a lovely weekend spent in the Salwey arms.
- Cymraes (10/5): - Very welcoming staff. Clean and cosy environment. Allowed to relax during a difficult time. Not rushed from your table👍
- Ann (8/5): Review post Covid 19 - The hotel was clean and had some Covid19 regulations in place. The key was wiped and cleaned upon arrival.
The bedroom was clean and so was the bathroom.
Tea and coffee making facilities were in the room, however I was not sure if that was all Covid safe?
Dinner was well organised and I felt the staff were sticking to the new rules. Tables were well spaced apart. The menu did not need to be handled by the customer.
Staff were not wearing any masks and I know that they don't have to but I would have felt more comfortable if they had been wearing them.
A couple of things I would change are as follows: the mattress on the bed was old and needed replacing.
The cushions on the bed were a Covid risk as they could not be changed each time. Along with the throw at the bottom of the bed.
No hand sanitiser in the room this would be good if customers wanted to sanitise anything they were not sure about.
Maybe a one way system could be put in place for people coming in and out.
The plated food had things like tartare sauce and peas in a pot on the plate and the beans on the breakfast plate, it would be more hygienic to put the food items straight onto the plate.
- JT (8/5): - Nice room. Handy for the bar. Good was good quality.
- Heather (10/5): Gluten free heaven! - Very modern. Lovely bathroom with great corner shower unit. Comfortable beds. GLUTEN FREE FISH AND CHIPS plus GLUTEN FREE BREAKFAST WITH HASH BROWNS, SAUSAGES AND BREAD!!!! I haven’t had such a good breakfast since I was diagnosed over thirty years ago. A BIG THANKS TO EVERYONE AT THE HOTEL.
- Mary (10/5): Lovely Place so friendly - Such a lovely place to stay and the staff are so friendly and helpful. We ate in the restaurant both nights of our stay and the food was excellent. A lovely fire burning in the restaurant and such a warm atmosphere in the whole hotel.
Would definitely stay there again.
- Steve (10/5): 1st class in every way couldn’t fault a thing - Lovely Hotel, very welcoming, room was excellent, with cafetière and kettle, Tea and biscuits, bed was extremely comfortable , bathroom was lovely, we had both Evening meal which was a Sunday Roast, and Breakfast which was Full English, couldn’t fault either, lovely stay would definitely come again
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very happy with our overnight stay , Very clean , very comfortable .Great food in the restaurant in the evening and lovely breakfast in the morning . Would definitely go back .
- Peter (10/5): Comfortable stay - Comfortable clean room, good menu in the restaurant and very tasty food.
Service at breakfast was very slow, 2 poached eggs was a 30 minute wait, saying that they were very good when they arrived.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great room great food and great service. Would definitely return
