The hotel food was very expensive and the menu was fixed with no options. When I tried to cancel the breakfast ordered for the next day (15 hours ahead) the management said it was too late and I would be charged. very inflexible. The town had few places to eat (except coffee & cake) so the hotel was the main option. Hotel mainly for Japanese.

We loved the private Onsen bath in our room and wearing the traditional yakata. The food was beautifully presented. Some parts of the hotel felt a little dated but the staff were extremely keen to please. I am allergic to dairy and it was difficult for them to adapt the meal for me. The Onsen was lovely but I was able to wear my swim suit but my husband was not.

Le fait de garder ses chaussures jusqu'aux chambres. Le côté un peu trop vétuste des infrastructures, défraîchies. En particulier les bains avec des bombes de mousse à raser pour homme rouillées dans chaque niche de lavage.... Enfin les fêtons qui n'en sont pas, trop minces, trop dur pour le corps.

They catered for my fish allergies and were very understanding. The onsens were brilliant even for a first timer and the rules were clearly explained. The rooms were slightly dated but generally clean and tidy. There was a paraffin heater on one floor which I've not seen for years but had a bit of a pungent smell about it.

Nearby the walk along the river was incredibly scenic and two restaurants, Suzume and Yakiniku Sansenri, were some of the best meals we ate all holiday. It’s dated, we found that charming but others might want more up to date facilities. The attentiveness of the staff is quite overbearing, way more than anywhere else we stayed, to the point where you receive unwanted phone calls to remind you of bookings. Breakfast was tasty but the last sitting is at 8:30am, which is too early when you are on holiday and wanting to relax.

• Christian (10/5): - The open-air baths were, of course, phenomenal, and an absolute reason to visit. However, we were also blown away by the hospitality of the staff and the dedication they put into ensuring a comfortable stay. The Japanese-style room was huge and atmospheric, though be prepared to sleep "on the ground" (futon) - we find that very nice, though. Both breakfast and dinner were also fantastic. Finally, Yamanaka is a beautiful little village, and is just big enough that you can explore it through a comfortable day of strolling, interspersed with the occasional return to the onsen to refresh with a hot bath. A great visit. Dinner is much too large for one person; we suspected this would be the case, and reserved only one meal for the two of us, which they did accommodate. Still, that left no room to add the crab, which looked fantastic. The inn seems to be mostly oriented towards the Japanese guests, which is understandable. They appear to be putting in some effort towards reaching out to international guests (e.g. being available here on Booking), but most signs/menus etc. are still solely in Japanese. We would like to take this space to call out to the one English-speaking staff member who took primary charge of all our matters; she put in an impressive effort, which we appreciate, but we feel she should perhaps not have to handle everything alone, even though she did do great.

• Olga (10/5): With some of the little disappointments I still think this onsen was an exceptional experience. - The onsen itself was amazing, those facilities are fantastic. Need to experience both baths, evening and morning, because they switch the spas, so every experience is different. The view is amazing. The breakfast area is beautiful and the food was great. The location is great, it's a beautiful town. I want to go back and spend more time there. The photos of the room are somewhat accurate, although the room could use some refreshing. The entrance and the halls are outdated, and for those facilities pictures are not provided. The first impression counts.
• ANNA (8/5): A Ghibli-Like Stay in a Charming Town - The room was spacious and offered a stunning view, and the meals were presented with such elegance and care—it really felt like a special experience. The open-air public onsen by the river was utterly dreamy. I also loved the tatami room and the chance to sleep on a futon, which added a truly authentic touch to the stay. The staff were incredibly hospitable and accommodating, which made our stay very pleasant. The onsen and rooms have a traditional charm, though some areas show signs of age, such as chipped doors, worn trays, and old stools. One thing I wished for was an English translation of the food menu. The meals were unique and special, but without a proper translation it was hard to fully appreciate the experience, even with the help of Google Translate.

• Evan (10/5): Private Onsen Suite - We loved our stay 2 night stay in the private Onsen suite. The kaiseki dinner and breakfasts were delicious and filling without making you uncomfortably full. The private Onsen and bath were fantastic and overlooked the gorge. It was so peaceful and so nice to get up in the morning and just sink in and soak while waiting for breakfast. The staff were amazingly friendly though be aware that English can be a bit difficult. It is Japan though so this isn’t a negative. The location was great, out of the way but a very easy, leas than 5 minute walk to the main town street and entrance to the gorge. 10 minutes walking you can get to the cozy and beautiful gorge cafe, we read books, ate cake, and drank tea there. Was fantastic for a relaxing visit. We loved everything about the property, this is more of a heads up. The town is very, very quiet and during our stay most places weren’t open even when the hours physically on the stores said they would be.

Hall nuovissima ma stanze… che non c’entrano nulla con la hall… Olsen privato … 45 minuti e bisognava pagare a parte… in questi 45 minuti era inclusa la doccia, al momento della consegna delle chiavi di dicono chiaramente che tra 45 minuti doveva essere riconsegnata la chiave… quindi considerando il tempo di scendere al piano inferiore e risalire alla fine… sono meno di 45 minuti…

Nous avions un appartement pour nous avec un salon, une terrasse, un fauteuil massant, deux frigo et un congélateur, une grande chambre, un sauna et le onsen privatif sur la terrasse. Sans parler du salon privé commun aux deux grandes suites qui est très agréable. Suite magnifique je recommande +++ et le village du onsen est également très joli a voir ! Le dîner est typique japonais, menu en japonais non traduit même avec Google Lens c'était parfois difficile, j'ai eu du mal a déguster certains des plats car je ne savais pas ce que c'était. Idem au petit déjeuner le matin.

I appreciated the free shuttle service from the train station to the onsen, this needs to be arranged beforehand through the expedia booking platform. The room was clean. Facilities could benefit from upgrades.

• Angel (10/5): Clean, comfy and amazing experience - We had a truly unforgettable stay at this ryokan. From the moment we arrived, the attention and care from the staff were exceptional. We are especially grateful to the young woman who kindly assisted us in English—she was incredibly helpful and patient, especially since it was our first time staying in a traditional Japanese setting and we were a bit clumsy with the customs. Thanks to her and the whole team, we felt completely comfortable and welcomed throughout our stay. The room with a private onsen and sauna was absolutely incredible, offering stunning views that made the experience even more special. The traditional dinners and breakfasts were both delicious and plentiful—each meal was a true feast, beautifully presented and full of flavor. The area around the ryokan is also beautiful and peaceful, perfect for a walk or simply to relax and take in the atmosphere. We also really appreciated the convenient shuttle service to and from Kagaonsen Station—it made the logistics of getting there effortless. We wholeheartedly recommend this ryokan to anyone looking for a warm, authentic, and luxurious Japanese experience

The place is super nice in itself, and the staff is delightful. It was my birthday, and they gave me a photograph of me and my mother. I appreciate it a lot! The shuttle bus is super easy to find as well. I found it a bit disappointing that we had to pay an extra for the drinks of the meal and the bath taxes, considering the price of one night, which is not cheap. There was not much to do around, but for one night I guess it was enough. The breakfast is A LOT haha I was full for the whole day, maybe a bit less would be perfect.

• Ashlie (10/5): Exceptional - Staying at Shirasagiyu Tawaraya was one of the highlights of our family's trip to Japan. The river rushing by outside our window was so relaxing, and the onsen was incredibly peaceful. The kaiseki dinner was amazing--I will never forget the carefully composed elements that made up each of the courses. The breakfast was wonderful as well. Yamanaka and the area around the hotel are also very charming. We just wish that we had stayed two nights instead of one!

• Maximilian (10/5): Wonderful, traditional Ryokan with amazing restaurant - The facilities were so perfectly clean and well well maintained and well equipped, especially the Onsen We stayed in a traditional Japanese room and loved it, including the futons to sleep on the floor The staff was extremely attentive, helpful and friendly. The dinner experience was the highlight of our Japan trip and I can only recommend it!
• Hanlon (10/5): Fantastic experience (some tips for other foreigners) - The room was gorgeous and the view was amazing. There was a delicious dinner and breakfast included in our booking and a shuttle bus to and from the train station. We were so relaxed and comfortable during our trip. The staff were very professional and courteous. The private onsen is amazing, it's spacious enough for a large group (even ten people or more), though I think only three or four can wash at a time. Most of our issues come from just being foreigners, so I mostly want to advise other foreigners and do not want to complain. Some things foreigners should know are that the breakfast and dinner are very traditional and so there may be food there that is not to your taste. Both meals are large enough that you can set aside a dish if you tried it and it wasn't your favorite, and the staff didn't remark to us if we preferred to not eat a dish so I think they understand it is a cultural difference and not a remark on the quality of the meal (the quality and presentation of both meals is excellent). Secondly, the public baths are not tattoo friendly. Many Americans (us included) have tattoos and so I think it's important to say that if you have them you will have to book the private onsen (~$25). And lastly, the yukata come in one size (multiple lengths are available though), so if you are plus size over maybe a 2X, it might be a good idea to bring your own. Staff were very courteous and accommodating in all things so these things are not a reflection on them nor on the overall wonderful experience we had, just some things we wished we knew before going.
• Miguel (10/5): Perfect relaxing and traditional experience - We went there to experience a japanese traditional hotel, as well as to rest after 10 days in Tokyo region, before going to another 10 days of walking in Kyoto-Osaka-Hiroshima region. Overall, was the perfect experience... The shuttle from JR station to the hotel has a great schedule. The staff was very nice and available, the room marvelous and traditional, very spacious also. The surroundings of the hotel are beautyfull and great for a walk in the woods by the river. The public onsen of the hotel is relaxing and an amazing experience (we went 3 times in 2 nights).The view from the room also wonderfull. This was the most expensive hotel (per night) we had in our 25 days japan trip, but worth it! I recommend it to everyone. I think 2 nights are perfect to rest and enjoy the experience, with breakfast included. Breakfast has like 14 different things in front of you, and change each day. You can try lots of different stuff from Japan. We did not tried the dinner since it was extremely expensive, so we wont say if it is good or bad. But the local restaurants of the village are cheap and very good. Totally recommend skiping the hotel dinner and go to the village instead (2 min walk).
• Maria (10/5): Beautiful lodging with exemplary staff - The staff were so kind and accommodating during our stay. The location was also very central to the Yamanaka Onsen town, perfect for exploring the area. The baths were beautiful and had a lot of great amenities, including hair ties, popsicles, and several Dyson hair dryers. Our room was the most economical one, and yet it was still very large and pretty with a great view. And the food was great; so meticulously prepared and presented. The egg dishes in particular were our favorites.

• Susan (10/5): - It was a lovely hotel. The village was so enjoyable and walkable. We loved the onsen!! Public onsen in the hotel so it was a little busy in the am but very quiet in the evening.
• Ryan (10/5): Amazing luxurious relaxation - Everything - the service, food, and the gorgeous room with a private onsen and lounge. Most relaxing hotel ever. More English at meals would be nice! I wish we would have ordered the crab ahead of time? That's it.
• Karin (10/5): - Our one night stay at Shirasagiyu Tawaraya was wonderful! We requested pick up and drop off at the station and this is pretty much necessary unless you take a taxi. The driver was very nice and found a tiny pin that came off my backpack without me even knowing it was missing. This is the type of attention to detail that is fantastic about Japan! The gentleman who talked us through check in and gave us info on meals, baths and so on was helpful, kind, and also funny. We LOVED our room and amenities. We got one of the newer rooms with access to a lounge with coffee, tea, soda, water, juice, and some alcohol. There was additional space to relax and take in the river and forest view. And it had a message chair. We used that a lot and only saw one other person enter the lounge to get a drink during our time there. Our room had a partial outdoor bath and it was wonderful. We also reserved and paid an additional fee for a 45 minute bath that had an indoor and outdoor. So glad we did this! The ryokan is on the river and we spent some time walking the trail. It was beautiful but there was remaining snow and quite a bit of water so had to be careful We did not find any open shops so decided to just focus our time relaxing in the baths and massage chair. If we would have spent a second night we would have looked harder for some local shopping areas and restaurants. We had dinner and breakfast at the inn. It was very good and the staff was fabulous. We enjoyed our relaxing stay!
