Guest Reviews
- Kiera (2/5): - When we arrived at the address given in Expedia, we were told that 1) the address was incorrect 2) they didn’t allow short term rentals (we reserved for the weekend) and 3) we would need to contact the renter. We tried contacting him but he never answered. So we never actually checked in. We ere turned away at the front desk.
- Tamara (10/5): Great customer service - Henry is nice and friendly. I had a problem with the couch bed and he nicely let get the other apartment at no charge. So we ended up with two apartments.
I will definitely come back and I strongly recommend. The apartments are very clean and comfortable
- Priscila (10/5): - Location is great and condition of apartment is good. I would suggest adding a microwave and a kettle. Also the wi fi was difficult to connect. Overall great price.
- Paul (2/5): - We
- Verified traveler (8/5): Know what it is & what it’s not - Overall I was pleased at my stay. My apartment was clean & attractive, & convenient location-wise.
I was nervous about the negative reviews. But I was able to communicate via text voice. They were responsive & up front about when they were not available.
As some reviewers mentioned, I was assigned a different apt from my original place. Honestly it didn’t matter to me because I didn’t pick it based on a specific unit (more concerned about the location). New Location was fine. A little confusion about getting in but was able to call/text and got instant response.
I paid more than normal because it was a busy weekend in Philly and hard to find availability. So I was disappointed that it didn’t have at least a serving or two of coffee and was missing some other things. Luckily I brought some Starbucks Via and made it work.
I think the description was misleading—-maybe because it was on Hotels.com. The description said it had a restaurant, spa, a gym, and a business center. I think there was a Renaissance hotel close by…was THAT what they referred to? Because this was a condo and had none of those things except the nearby businesses.
So read carefully but also read the reviews.
I had read about the $500 security deposit but was taken aback at sending it through Venmo to an individual. I only just checked out today so it’s too early to say whether I get the deposit back. I have no reason to think I won’t. I liked the place.
- Mike (10/5): - Location great. Clean. Had everything I needed.
- Gerhart (2/5): - The place was already rented to another party, and it took us over an hour to figure it out. Communication was poor. Refund our money!
- Brian (2/5): - This place is a scam. They try to charge for extra things after booking and refuse to provide access unless you pay an extra $500.
- Lisa (2/5): - The property manager is a scammer. He baits and switches, which is what others have warned against. He told me at the last minute that the property was not available and offered a refund, which he is not issuing.
Stay away!!!!!
- Verified traveler (4/5): A nightmare. I will NEVER book with them ever. - I booked the room for 3 days, the original place I booked had problems so they dicides to offered me another room. They have no parking, I had to pay valet parking next door $50 a day. At first everything looked good till i notices stains on the sofa, the bathroom and the master bedroom had no working light bulps. The pots were dirty and the coffe maker had mold. I had spent what I had for those three days so I had to stay there. I also made a refundable deposit of $500 that was supposed to be refunded back to me after 2 days after check out. It's been about 3 weeks and I haven't received the deposit and I tried multiple times to contact the owner but they've decided to ignored me.
- Tiara (4/5): - The room was not clean
- khanisha (4/5): Complicated and not prepared to host - Only spent 6 hours here because the first day of the trip the room was not ready and we had to be sent to another hotel across the street it was definitely nice but the next day we had to pack up and move again the second day of the trip I couldn’t use the room until after 3pm this is not a hotel but an apartment it reeked of fresh cut onions it looked like a rushed clean still dirty (kitchen) no soap or even bottled water, living room tv did not work, I spent 30 mins trapped in the lobby because no one was at the front desk and I wasn’t instructed to use a key fob for the elevators I was buzzed up initially, while my 7year old was stuck on the 13th floor.
- Elijah (2/5): - This is a scam please don’t stay here.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I loved the view and the location.great place to walk around the city or go to public transportstion. My room had to be changed due to past visitors but i was pleased with the assistance in the transistion. They even gave me a nicer view of the city.
- Expedia (10/5): - I was actually only there 9/26-9/28, but it was a beautiful, comfortable accommodation in a great location
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Perfect size for one or two people. Manager was very communities and accommodating. The room could have been cleaner and the general build of the apartment was a little claustrophobic at times for a man of my size (6’3”). All in all a good stay.
- Marc (8/5): - Overall, this was a good place. The location was great. It is probably a tad small for two regular size people (queen bed and the futon is small). But it served the purpose we needed and very convenient. If you want to stay in the city and do not need frills, then this is a good place.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I loved this apartment styled hotel room! It basically is in the heart of center city. Which means easy assessable to restaurants and stores. I’d definitely recommend anyone to book this hotel.
- Ashton (4/5): Pretty good, but some problems - We booked this location and was moved to a nearby apartment due to broken toilet. Unclear whether new apartment was worth the same amount. In the replacement apartment there was very wet floor in bathroom when we arrived. Host only communicated via text and asked us to send ID via photo. He brought up that smoking in the apartment incurs fines on three separate occasions which was over the top considering neither of us smoke. Apartment was comfortable and clean otherwise. Air conditioning was great. Location is pretty good!
- keith (2/5): Bed bugs in a scam - Terrible noisy, hot, they charge 125 for cleaning 700 dollar total for 4 nights I also got bed bugs from the place absolute dump crack house
- charles (6/5): Last minute switch - On the morning of our trip, I was told the unit I had reserved was no longer available due to a leak in the unit above. We were moved to 22nd and Market Street, which appears to be an older building in a less desirable neighborhood.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The property was clean and had everything we needed for a 1 week stay for conference! Location was great and the manager was easy to work with! He even notified us of problems prior to check in and adjusted our location to improve our stay! Would definitely stay again!
- David (2/5): Doesn’t sleep 3 - This place sucked. It was filthy, horrible bedding, mirror fell off the wall, does not sleep 3 people.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - This was a horrible stay, do not book even if it's the only available property. The owner moves you around without any notice. The property looks nothing like the pictures or unit booked. The Mattress is a junky old pile of foam. We really got burned by this property and I urge anyone else to not book with them. Expedia really should remove them from their site as they are operating very shady business practices.
- RodneyD (8/5): - Very nice studio apartment. Great location. Good value.
- Janet (8/5): Rocky Start but Great apartment - I booked my stay at the Renaissance hotel and after confirmation received a text that the website had not been updated and the hotel room was not available but they could offer me a choice of a studio in a brownstone at a discount for the three nights or one night in a 2 bed apartment then move to a 1 bed apartment for the last two nights. I opted for the discounted studio. There was a problem with the lock box and I could not access the studio so I ended up in the 2 bed apartment and am glad that I did. The apartment is new and very nice with a fantastic roof view, several restaurants as well as downtown within walking distance. Henry stayed in touch by text and phone calls when necessary which I appreciated. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay even with the rocky start.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The location was amazing and the apartment was super modern
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Great location, but the apartment was supposed to be an ‘upgrade’. Sheets were dirty, couch was broken, door was locked when I was aupposed to be open. Coordination between Expedia and the property managers was odd and very anxiety-producing. Managers were slow to respond to the instruction to pay a deposit. Apartment was small and dark, but had nice amenities and great location. One bedroom is really an office and has no window, so it will s a bit claustrophobic. Property manager readily available while we were in the apartment for the weekend. Most repaires/cleaning needed were taken care of.
- Lawrence (8/5): - Excellent communication and very accommodating
Weather was bbeautiful
- Luis (4/5): - The location is within walking distance to downtown city center, very convenient.
Property is very old and with sewer system coming from the basement area.
Bathroom is dissapointing and bath tub is horrible.
Furniture is new and clean.
The price is high for a property like this.
I would prefer a hotel room over this.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Right in City Center, near Trader Joes. I was here for work, so these conveniences and the comfort of a spacious place to work were important. This would be a great property for a visit to the city on vacation as well.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great service in the face of a water leak - I received a text shortly before arriving telling me that there was a water leak in the room above the one I booked. They gave me a new address for a room (about a block away) and simple instructions for checking into an apartment. The room itself was very nicely kept and decorated. Having a washer/dryer in the room meant that I only needed two changes of clothes, and the fully stocked kitchen meant I saved a bunch on meals by not having to dine out in downtown Philly.
- Micheala (10/5): Great Corporate Apartment on Chestnut St. - Got upgraded to a two bedroom. Apartment was well-appointed and central.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Aparthotel - My first experience with an apartment/hotel. It was awesome! The property was beautiful & clean, and Henry was very attentive and available. Everyone I came into contact with was very friendly and knowledgeable.
- Guy H. (6/5): Great Location in Philly - This review is actually for the Avenir building since the property originally booked had some mechanical issues. The building was newly renovated and the apartment was clean. The furniture was a bit sparse and of early Ikea vintage so the living room was a bit uncomfortable, but the beds were fine and it worked for our purposes, which was to be centrally located in Philly.
- Traveler (4/5): Poor communication from landlord. - Pros: Good location, downtown. Nice area, residential. Full Cable TV.
Cons: First off, I was scheduled for one apartment and was texted the night before that they were moving me 8 blocks to another.
1 - Cold apartment, in the Studio. Heat is controlled from another apartment. ?!? Needed owner to drop off space heaters. Which they did, two times because 1 wasn't enough. They were responsive and great about that.
2 - One roll of toilet paper that was not a full roll.
3 - Poor communication from landlord. Was not told the exact location of the apartment. Because the keycode worked on another adjacent apartment, and it was dark, I stayed my first night in the wrong apartment until the new tenants appeared. When I told the new tenants I was there for another two days, they handed the phone to me and I spoke to the landlord. He was rude and demanding that I "vacate immediately". I would think if you had two apartments and one was behind the house in a dark corner, that you would give tenants SPECIFIC instructions or at least have letters on the door (A, B).
4 - To get to the apartment, you continuously had to unlock a lockbox, then open a padlock chain to be able to open the iron gates to the driveway. This can be not too fun at night when you can't see and it is cold. This had to be locked at all times because they rented out the parking space behind the gates.
5 - Most breakers were turned off, half of the lights/outlets didn't work until I figured that out.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Much less than expected ! - By the luck of the draw we were booked into a unit that must have been abandoned by it's owner in this OLD CONDO building. The building appeared to have been built in the '50s. It had old style window AC units and baseboard boiler heating.
Our unit was desperately in need of attention. WiFi did not work with my laptop. TV impossible to use, either dead batteries or broken clickers. My wife cautioned me to not sit on the couch or walk on the floor barefooted. Sink in bathroom was dislocated from wall and the drain plumbing had been replaced improperly such that it left the stopper unusable and it drained very slowly. Burned paint on the wall next to the gas stove. Cracks in bathroom ceiling and one wall. closet doors off tracks. Furnishings were old, damaged and worn out. Two sets of keys, one worked nicely the other was very difficult to use. The refrigerator relatively new.
Check in was difficult, the security person at the entrance desk had no idea that units were being rented. Luckily I had my check in instructions with me and upon presentation and some difficulty we were allowed in.
Based on the advertising pictures and the cost of the stay we did not expect this much disappointment in our accommodation in downtown Philadelphia.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Could not lock from inside; room falling apart - The 'Renaissance' title makes you think this is part of the Marriott. It's far from it.
The night before my reservation, I received an unprofessionally worded text message letting me know that I had been 'upgraded' to a sister property, at 2135 Walnut. I followed the property manager's instructions to enter an unmarked apartment building in an unsafe neighborhood, the interior of which was run down. There was no concierge. I followed a dark corridor to get to my room at the end of the hall, and entered to find it unclean and falling apart. The ceiling had a gaping hole, floorboards did not meet, and the apartment was dirty. The building had no concierge, spa, or business services as the ad for either room claims.
The decrepit state of the room, and the lack of amenities (not to mention the lack of an actual hotel) was unacceptable and false advertising. However, what led me to leave the room was the fact that I could not lock the door from the inside.
I called the property manager to let him know I was leaving, and ask for a refund. He told me to cancel the room via Expedia so someone else could book it, and then he would refund the reservation. I called Expedia but they told me he had to refund it before they could cancel - not the other way around. He became unresponsive, so I wasted hours with Expedia and had to file a dispute with my credit card company that lasted for months. I eventually got my money back. Wasn't worth the hassle - don't book with this property!
- Mitch (10/5): Great stay - Had a meeting scheduled in center city and we booked 7 properties with Renaissance, They were centrally located, responsive, and all the amenities were great especially the sporting club at the bellevue hotel which is awesome! Thanks for a great stay, will definitely stay again
- Ali (10/5): excellent stay - Had a meeting scheduled in center city and we booked 7 properties with Renaissance, They were centrally located, responsive, and all the amenities were great especially the sporting club at the bellevue hotel which is awesome! Thanks for a great stay, will definitely stay again
- Verified traveler (2/5): BAD NEWS NOT A HOTEL - This is not a hotel. People not nice! Checkin horrible. Service terrible! Safety almost nonexistent. Never ever AGAIN! Beware!!
Photos on website are not accurate!
- Verified traveler (2/5): this is not a hotel - Immediately after booking the room, I realized that I had made an error and contacted expedia to change the room. Expedia tried to contact the hotel, which would only respond by email within 72 hours. I was forced to keep the reservation as is. There are several instructions imbedded in the confirmation that I did not notice. When I arrived at the location, I was unable to gain entry. There was no one there to even answer a question. I was forced to find another place to sleep that night. In the morning I pulled out my itinerary and noticed that I was supposed to call immediately after booking the room and that there was a $500 deposit. Well...since Expedia and I had made several attempts to contact the hotel and no one ever answered or responded to our email, I was not sure how that was supposed to help me gain entry. Anyway, I called again and, surprise, someone answered. I explained to them what happened and they claimed that they responded to Expedia -- but they never did -- and the representative was very rude and unyielding. Expedia agents contacted the "hotel" and were treated rudely as well. Disregard my rate of the physical room because I never got into the hotel. Avoid this place like the plague. They have a no refund policy for a reason. I also suggested that Expedia not feature hotels managed by Rennaisance any longer.
- Arno (2/5): A cute slum - This was a short-term apartment rental. The agent offered to switch us to another property, nearby, a duplex in a small building. He said there would be a carport for our use, but it turned out to have a car in it, and we had to park in a garage nearby. This "duplex" had tiny rooms, connected by a steep spiral staircase. In the course of our stay we saw one rat, many roaches and ants. Light bulbs were out in bathroom and kitchen. The bathtub drain didn't function. The rental agent sent someone who was supposed to repair it, but all that person did was remove the entire drain mechanism, leaving a open hole in the bottom of the tub. There was dirt in many places. Grout in the bathroom and kitchen was crumbling. Paint on kitchen appliances was peeling and the handle of the refrigerator was broken. The whole apartment smelled, and we had to wash all our clothes upon returning home.
- Sam (10/5): Rocky Start - Stellar Experience!! - The hotel rated above is the facility at Market Street/8th Avenue, not the Chestnut Street location. After a rocky start due to utility issues at Chestnut Street we were upgraded by H to a very swank loft in the heart of Center City, which turned out to be closer to the Convention Center than previous booking - hurrah! Although on a major street, once inside it was a very clean and tranquil. Lots of useful amenities!
- Lisa D. (10/5): My review title is Simply Beautiful. - The place we stayed at was beautiful and it was like a home away from home. I will do it again, and the rooftop patio was breath taking. I took a lot of pics, of the room, and the patio, it is in my photo gallery.
- Eugenia M. (4/5): property was not very clean and manager could not care less about our tax exemption condition - Next time, if there is one, it will be directly with owner.
- Verified traveler (2/5): I didn't end up staying - It's not a hotel but an old Apartment building. No front desk or attendant. I wanted to complain but there was no one there. Ended up going to another place and trying to get my refund with Expedia
- Joseph (10/5): The best place to stay in Philadelphia! - Easy check-in process. The place is clean and spacious. The bed was extremely comfortable dressed with quality linens and pillows. I look forward to staying here again and definitely recommend it to anyone whether it is for a short stay or an extended stay.
- curtis (2/5): - Got to location and room was unavailable due to plumbing sent me to another hotel
- Verified traveler (10/5): - I will only stay with this property when visiting Philly.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Not a Hotel & Not reliable - First of all, anyone booking here should know that it is not a hotel or even an "apart-hotel"; it's an apartment in a residential apartment building that is rented out to people.
The day I was meant to check in, I received a message saying that there had been a plumbing accident in the building and that my booking was not available. The company put me up in an actual hotel for the night, then promised me a place in another, larger property they own. When I went to this other property, it was just a locked door in a wall with buzzers for specific apartments. There was no way of getting in. Eventually, after waiting on the sidewalk for 30 minutes, someone came out through the door, and I entered the building. There was no front desk, no lobby, no anything: just a hallway to an elevator. I walked right back out and booked a different hotel instead. The fact that this property was in a distinctly seedy neighborhood convinced me I didn't want to say there, and what little I saw of the property itself was filthy. I would not recommend this property or the company who manages it.
- Sergio (10/5): Working with Henry was great. - My wife and I loved it. She wants to go back to the same place in July.
- Marta (8/5): great location and environment! - I came with my son. Apartment with two rooms was very convenient. We felt like living in Philadelphia with our flat very confortable. The location is absolutely great! I recommended it.
