Guest Reviews
- jimtay (10/5): A lovely stay. - The hotel is in a great location and a great base for travelling further afield - Whitby, Scarborough, York , Eden Camp, Elvington Airfield etc. North York Moors Railway is a 5 minute walk away too.
The hotel itself is lovely, with a beautiful enclosed garden which the restaurant overlooks. A good menu choice, and all meals were well presented and very good value - and the breakfasts are fabulous!
Our room was spacious, the mattress and pillows were so comfortable which gave us an excellent nights sleep. The bathroom was a little on the small side, but adequate, and the shower was easy to use and powerful. All in all, we enjoyed our four night stay and look forward to returning.
- Rowena (9/5): All the staff are so lovely and welcoming. We booked the executive twin which was large and very comfortable. Great loca - Great location
Lovely sunny garden to relax with a drink.
Probably the best scones we’ve ever had and the breakfast was excellent.
- gary (10/5): Brilliant hotel will be going back - Friendly staff clean breakfast and evening meal was exceptional Was nothing we didn’t like
- alisonbB410MW (10/5): Another Wonderful Stay. - We have just returned from another lovely stay at this outstanding hotel .
We were once again greeted with such a
warm welcome. Room 1 was beautiful and spotless .Throughout our stay staff were engaging and very attentive. We must mention once again Alun and Tom , who are such a credit to the Hotel. They make sure you are well looked after and interact so well .We must mention the chef who prepared two excellent meals for us with attention to detail .Suzanne on reception always makes time to have a chat when you pass by about your day .We are looking for an excuse to visit again!
Ali & Dave .
- Laxton (9/5): Really good as akways - Breakfast brilliant N/a
- Carol (5/5): Lovely location and staff but hotel tired and in need of updating. - Location Hotel is generally tired and bottom of toilet badly stained and shower pressure was very poor.

- Karen (9/5): Short break , ideal venue - Great location. Plenty of parking
- Joanne (8/5): - Very easy walking distance to town. Expect to walk upstairs to bedrooms. Very clean reception staff was loveky At breakfast we sat a full 10 -15 mins before anyone spoke to us or offered a drink another couple came in after us and was served before us. The woman doing breakfast should have had help seemed like only the older lady who was busy doing stuff.
- Stephen (8/5): - Lovely garden area where we enjoyed an afternoon tea. Excellent and helpful staff. Great location near the bus station.
- John (10/5): - The location is really good and the parking is very good the staff are very friendly and interested in the guests Nothing
- stanley (10/5): 90 percent of the stay is the welcoming and friendly staff and excellent food - very friendly staff arrived late missed evening meal and Alan rustled up some food for me after very long and difficult day traveling from Ireland very welcoming and helpful i new about small shower and extractor fan from kitchen in my room before i arrived but was not put out by that great view of garden no road noise and breakfast was excellent the hotel is a listed building so will have its quirks laundry in hallway as my room was near house keeping but it is a listed building and large and somethings cannot be helped as there is a lot of rooms
- Jill (8/5): - Lovely room and breakfast Shower wasn't very powerful or really hot
- Sarah (10/5): Lovely Stay - Lovely clean nicely decorated.
Very friendly helpful staff Nothing
- Neil (10/5): Beautiful hotel in a beautiful town. - The room was really quite stunning. All good.
- PeterNesbitt (10/5): Outstanding hotel - Very comfortable with excellent food. comfortable surroundings and a brilliant staff with a 'can do' and cheerful attitude. Ideal for a long stay to explore the area or a short break just to relax.
- Adrian (10/5): well enjoyed - Close to town centre with good off road parking, friendly staff, good food. no lift for disable to go up stairs, it's a listed building so I can accept that.
- fay (10/5): Excellent - The even meal and breakfast was lovely. Staff friendly and helpfull.good location. Lovely hotel and clean . N/A
- Dave (10/5): Lovely building friendly people and a cat - When we checked in the staff members were very helpful and I think his name was Tom on check in and he re arranged rooms to accommodate my 90 year mother in law a ground floor room which was very much appreciated also loved the hotel cat
- Laura (10/5): The food, location and quality local staff who actually care, make this a winner. - Food excellent. Staff exceptional. Knowledgeable friendly, local charm NOT corporate "battery feed" service. Unique because staff are allowed to be themselves and spend time with the guests. Nothing. Don't change a thing.

- Riverman2008 (10/5): Great for a one-night break, but would be as good for longer periods. - Only 2 miles from where we live, which is why we chose it for a birthday celebration at a convenient location. Friendly and welcoming staff and the building has a warm and friendly atmosphere. Our room was large, clean and comfortable; good value for money. There was no noise disruption.
- Lionel (10/5): Everything you need for a one-night stay, but staying longer would no doubt be just as good. - Our stay was to celebrate my wife's birthday, and we wanted somewhere local. We live in Thornton-le-Dale, so this was ideal. The staff were welcoming, showed good humour, and were polite and helpful. The food was good. The room spacious and it was clean. The bed was comfortable. 1. As with many hotels, the bedroom electrics and switches were a complete puzzle to be solved only by extensive experimentation! :) Perhaps labelling light switches might be helpful? 2. Not overly excited to find a bath IN the bedroom. 3. Weird bathroom taps .. another puzzle to be solved by experimentation! We got the hang of them in the end.
- Maureen (10/5): No sentence required ,only one word BRILLIANT - Breakfast wonderfully, hotel great Nothing more to fully enjoy your stay at th hotelNo
- Steven (9/5): -
- Greg (9/5): - Location and staff Some of the furniture is a little dated
- Moseley (9/5): - Friendly staff. Excellant food.
Lovely comfortable bed. Large room and en suite. Well equiped with little extras. Nice big fluffy bath/ hand towels t.v. wifi. Kettle.. tea coffee and d.choc
Lovely and warm Room and very clean. ...... Unfortunately no food available on thurs evening but this was pointed out to us beforehand and on arrival..

- Ian (10/5): Simply the Best; The Best of Best Western, The Best Value, The Best Staff, The Best Food , - It would be hard to find the right words to express how excellent, fine, comfortable,, safe, superb and satisfactory this hotel proved to be. We use Best Western Hotels on a very regular basis so our expectations are based on considerable experience, However the Forest and Vale 'Pickering' exceeded any expectation we might have had and provided these quite picky octogenarians with the best short break of 2025 a short break I feel will prove hard pressed to be surpassed in 2026.
The rooms are spacious, and well appointed similarly our bathroom was large and well equipped,
Sometimes hotels situate in a converted listed building reflect only tired grandeur but nor here.
This hotel though not grand and not glamourous offers a warmth and a welcome befitting its well crafted décor its well defined individuality and the obviously customer centric management.
Finally I must comment on the cuisine, simplistically we have found non better these many years !
The chefs are a marvel, producing dishes that surpass much of what might be served in establishments parading their five star spangled ratings to world.. The waiters ( Here I am being Gender Neutral ) are also of the best we have encountered in the UK and perhaps in recent travels world wide,.
We dined from the best a restaurant might offer, for here everything combined to comfort, care and a culinary excellence so rarely provided in these sad days of corner cutting and penny-pinching carelessness. NOT BEING ABLE TO FIND SOMETHING I MIGHT GRUMBLE ABOUT
- Mark (8/5): Nice relaxing stay great breakfast , great location - Breakfast was fresh and well cooked
Plenty of choice The room could of been a little cheaper
The walk from the car park to the main reception was uneven
- Martin (9/5): -
- John (8/5): Great location, very enjoyable stay - Room was very nice, great facilities and lovely staff. Expensive
- Irene (8/5): -
- Julie (7/5): - Breakfast fine. Covenient location. Good car park. Internet poor. Dinner service not available 3 out of 5 nights.
- alisonbB410MW (10/5): Enjoyable once again. - We have just returned from yet again a faultless stay. We were welcomed with such warmth by Tom who checked us in .
The bedroom was excellent, spotlessly clean and provided everything we needed. Reception staff very Pleasent as always.
Excellent food and service at our evening meals .Tom interected with us and we were so pleased to see Alun had rejoined the team.
We look forward to our next visit in the Spring.
- V4608JPwilliamb (10/5): Repeat Visit to a Lovely Quality, Market Town Hotel - Lovely quality, market town hotel. Good value, civilised and comfortable. We have stayed here multiple times when visiting family in the area and the Forest and Vale never disappoints.
- myhomedesk (10/5): A Really Nice Hotel - We love this hotel and have stayed quite a few times over the years. We had a Deluxe Room which was quite spacious and the bed was extremely comfy, not too soft. Breakfast was great, table service rather than a buffet, the lady that served us was very friendly and attentive. Lots of parking spaces too.
- Michael (10/5): -
- William (9/5): Relaxing and very comfortable small hotel - Excellent freshly cooked breakfast
- Howard (9/5): -
- Joanna (10/5): -
- Christine (10/5): Lovely hotel will definitely stay again - Excellent location.very friendly staff. Beautiful room and bed very comfortable
- Steve (9/5): Friendly, comfortable hotel with good food and great location. - Good location with ample parking. Nice gardens. Good food. Welcoming, attentive staff. Good decor. Good shower. Liked the resident cat, too! Bedside lights could not be individually controlled. No subtitle facility on TV. Choice of eggs at breakfast would have been nice. Fairly expensive but probably fair enough for the area.
- Iveson (9/5): Warm, friendly and fun. Food was excellent and all the staff were just marvelous. - Excellent choice of breakfast. Staff were very friendly and helpful. You could walk to every thing from the hotel and Pickering is lovely. Nothing. Lovely place to stay. Would go again.
- Tracy (9/5): Excellent stay in a lovely hotel - Relaxing and friendly, lovely building, large spacious room with excellent facilities.
Very good breakfast, nice and hot!
Didn't eat in the hotel, but the menu contains excellent selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes. Wished we were staying another night! Very, very minor thing... like to be able to graze a breakfast buffet of fruit, yoghurt, cereal, etc. These were available but only to order.
- Dean (9/5): Lovely hotel. Love to stay again. Thanks. Dean Wilson 8 - The room. And Location of the Hotel The stairs
- Tabitha (8/5): - We came to stay to go on the Mad Alice train tour and this hotel was perfectly placed close by to the said station. The staff were helpful and friendly and the room was clean, and comfortable. The breakfast the next morning was enjoyable and again the staff member on duty was attentive and friendly, the food itself was delicious. We had thought that as the restaurant was closed on a Sunday night and the bar doesn't serve food to get take out after the train but were unable to do so as the only places open only took cash and there are no 24 hour ATM's anywhere!!! I would say make sure you take cash in case you want to get something!!
- Elaine (9/5): Lovely mini break - Excellent location , close to NYMR railway. Staff very friendly & bag taken to our room. Plenty of free car parking. We only had breakfast but it was very good with plenty of choice. Nothing
- Jayne (9/5): Lovely stay, would highly recommend! - Beautiful building. Clean, well laundered white towels and bedding. The most comfortable bed with a range of pillow thicknesses to suit everyone.
Accommodated us on the ground floor so we didn’t have to tackle the stairs. My only issue was not enough coffee or sugar sachets. ( not a problem) they gave more on request.
- Anthony (9/5): Lovely hotel in a great location - The room was spotlessly clean , cosy and warm. The food was lovely and good value for money. The lady on reception was lovely and we'll definitely stay there again. Great car park and well situated There was nothing we didn't like.
- Susan (8/5): Genuinely friendly and helpful staff.a great treat for myself and a friend - Old fashioned charm. A period building with well appointed rooms. Large bathroom. A walk in shower might have been preferable and the water pressure was a little low.
- Christine (10/5): Relaxed - Very good location, the staff where very nice and it was 5 minutes walk to the town. Nothing
- Tim (10/5): Most enjoyable and a most recommend this hotel - Fabulous location and really friendly and helpful staff. Good to have parking at the hotel too. Loved the history and character of the building too. Nothing
- James (6/5): Lovely town, acceptable room but expected better - Location, friendly staff Not the cleanest. Old decor, needs updating
- Julian (7/5): Excellent in human terms, but the property needs some work. - Location: excellent for east Yorks and tourist attractions. Hot water, good hot cooked food, an c friendly and outgoing staff. Parking excellent. Generally in need of refreshing: some colour. Own room lacked heat in bathroom (reported), and bizarre lighting - really needs sorting.
- Silonicus (6/5): An average hotel - The hotel is a little dated but I guess the £120 per night is because of the area.
Staff are very friendly. Room was dated and small fro £120. WiFi very poor 3-4Mb/s max. Not great for MS Teams or streaming Netflix.
I ordered the fish and chips assuming that being fairly close to the coast that it would be good. Unfortunately this was not the case. The batter was soft in places so I assume the temperature of the oil was not hot enough. The fish itself was mushy so I am guessing it is frozen fish that is defrosted rather than fresh. For £19 I expected better.
- Erin (10/5): Peaceful stay - Great central location. Excellent value. Warm cosy rooms. Wonderfully hot shower. Comfy bed with lots of pillows. Well kept gardens. Very polite, friendly and helpful staff. Look forward to going back again when it’s warmer so that we can enjoy the outdoor areas. Nothing!
- wendy (9/5): - Lovely hotel
Ideal location right in the heart of pickering
Great staff very friendly
Only disappointment was that we couldn't get booked in next year
- Andrew (7/5): pleasant stay, decent hotel - central location, right in the town, so handy for shops, sightseeing / train station. Rooms fine, bathrooms spacious and plenty of car parking space outside if needed nothing - all fine
- richard (9/5): Very pleasant weekend stay - Great location centre of Pickering
Big free car park
Comfortable room
Nice breakfast, and evening meal Expensive
Room a little too warm at night
- Tony (9/5): - Pleasant hotel in good location. Room was clean, spacious and well appointed. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was excellent with prompt efficient service.
- Tracy (10/5): - Hotel was clean, close to town, food was lovely, staff were amazing Nothing all was great
- Susan (10/5): - Lovely Nothing
- Michael (8/5): - Spacious room Breakfast was a bit hutcand miss
- Roger (10/5): Good -
- Janine (8/5): -
- Lynne (9/5): Lovely and peaceful - Lovely helpful staff who smiled and made my trip a lovely experience. It is an old worldy hotel but really nice location, parking and staff.
- Craig (9/5): Pickering stop for NYMR - Freshly cooked breakfast on hot plate. Plus choice of food. Location was great. Nice setting for hotel. Good size bath towels. Only 1 small bottle water and only 1 face flannel in room set for a couple.
- A J (10/5): Best western forest and vale hotel - Very friendly helpfull staff, plenty of choice for breakfast and dinner.Situated in the town center. Our room was away from the road so very quiet.
- Gar (8/5): Grand Day Out in Pickering... - The location of this establishment was ideal in Pickering for easy access to the rail station, museum and castle.
Inside, the superior room was great for what we wanted it for, a good supply of tea, coffee and hot chocolate (something that isn't supplied at the hotels we work in, in the West Midlands). The view from the window was peaceful and idyllic with views of the gardens and the countryside in the yonder.
Service from the staff, I must admit was brilliant and some over others excelled at their professionalism in customer service.
Food was excellent and well presented on the evening, a very fine dining experience. The cleanliness lacked somewhat. Dust in the room from mirrors, window ledge, and TV. Dust in the bar area, cobwebs could be seen around the lighting and coving of the dining area and bar.
The bed was two singles pushed together, not great. Pillows were uncomfortable and flat, we required additional ones.
One or two of the staff could have presented themselves better, untidy shirt sticking out. Unprofessional conversations in earshot of their customers.
- Leonard (9/5): Excellent. Staff were particularly good. - Staff, location and food. No air conditioning, windows in room didn’t open with the exception of one opening about six inches
- 223margaretc (10/5): A wonderful comfortable hotel - A wonderful hotel, cleanliness excellent, comfortable room, delicious breakfast cooked to order, good choice of menu at evening meal, extremely helpful staff, and right in the centre of Pickering - who could want for more on a break in the North Yorkshire Moors.
- Marcus (10/5): -
- val (9/5): - Very convenient. A bit expensive fir room o lying fir 5 nights
- David (7/5): - Excellent 'superior' room Bathroom rather dated. Poor shower.
- June (9/5): Hotel and gardens superb - Loved the Georgian building and the gardens were super.
Evening dining and drinks were reasonably priced
Well placed to explore Pickering Not enough electrical sockets in the room.
Would have preferred buffet style breakfast rather than menu choice only especially as room rate was a little more expensive than others in area
- Stephen (9/5): -
- Paul (10/5): - A very nice place to call home for a few days. Staff are friendly and obliging.
- torries713 (10/5): Gem of a hotel - We stayed as a family. Pickering was a wonderful base for us to explore the surrounding area. The hotel itself was wonderful, an absolute gem. The rooms were clean and bright overlooking the lovely gardens. The service at breakfast was wonderful with a good selection of continental and cooked items. We had a drink and evening meal the first night and really enjoyed the food. The stars were so friendly and helpful. We felt the hotel was excellent value for money. All in all we would stay here again when next in the area. Thank you for making our stay so great.
- paulpR6755IL (10/5): Holiday Break - From arrival to departure we could not fault anything at the Forest & Vale Hotel ... staff, room and food and drinks all brilliant.
- Amanda (9/5): Perfect - Every thing was perfect. Staff very attentive, location central (expect some traffic noise ) and gardens were beautiful. Nothing
- Allan (10/5): -
- Wyatt-grainge (8/5): Staff extra helpful on arrival thank you -
- Carole (9/5): Very relaxing , great to be in the centre of Pickering and the staff were really helpful - Fabulous breakfast with great choices I travelled with a friend and it would have been nice to have adjoining rooms. I did book 2 rooms in the same booking.
- Steve (8/5): -
- Ryan (10/5): - Good breakfast and arrived and got upgraded to a deluxe bedroom. It was beautiful
- baldwin (8/5): Good as usual - Met our needs as usual. Thanks.
- Steve (10/5): Lovely stay, and perfect for visiting the NYMR. - Great location, plenty of parking, clean and comfortable room. Above all - each and every member of staff was friendly, helpful, professional and a pleasure to speak with. 2 steep flights of stairs to reach the bedroom in the rear building (but it was made clear when booking, and help was provided for luggage).
- Simon (10/5): - The hotel was very quiet lovely view of garden from our room. Everything was very clean and staff were all very friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back
- Martin (7/5): Goed. - Parkeren was prima. Beperkt ontbijt, en helaas geen avondeten in het weekend.
- Keith Callaghan (10/5): Nice - Nice well kept place Breakfast was outstanding
- Geoff (8/5): The best, best western - Very comfortable and clean. Central to what we needed. The two rooms we booked were not as requested close together, but they did explain when we checked in.
- Kyme (10/5): -
