Guest Reviews
- Giovanny (10/5): - Love the view
- Debra (6/5): - You get what you pay for. We were looking for a quick overnight place to stay. It's very outdated, Mattresses are on top of a box spring made of bricks, literally. The shower had a lot of black mold. The restaurant is great though! So is the staff!
- Joel cazarez (8/5): -
- Jose Alfredo (10/5): - friendly staff and clean rooms.
- Jose luis (10/5): - La tranquilidad
- James (6/5): - I enjoyed it, but not sure all would so go with proper expectations. Near cliff that near a quiet beach. Enjoyable beach walk at low tide, fishing, peaceful, decent seafood restaurant but hours are limited to 1:00 to 9:00 PM. No breakfast and no staff found in morning so plan accordingly. Not much else to do. You need to relax and make your own fun. Front desk girl and waitress Daisy was very pleasant. Room was not dirty but very modest and everything seemed worn out. Wifi did not work in room but did in restaurant. Hotel construction stopped leaving it part complete. For the low price and beach location it was all fine with me and with the other guests but might be too rustic for many. During my stay it was quiet, peaceful and there were no problems. So, if you want to fish, or chill and you need nothing fancy it’s an interesting experience.
- Alexxus (10/5): AMAZING - Amazing view, safe location, loved every second.
- salvador del (2/5): - No was close
- Esgar (10/5): - Really nice and clean
- luis manuel cordova (2/5): - muy malo camino de llegada
- BRUCE (10/5): - Great rooms upstairs - very good restaruant
- arcelia (6/5): - Me gustó el panorama que tiene lo que no me gusto es que está muy solo el lugar
- Arthuro (10/5): - Very clean and quiet place to rest great Margaritas
- Pedro (6/5): Mal servicio..
- stephen (10/5): Camalu is the new Malibu - This little place is great-for people who just want to check out of society for a spell. It’s a bit rustic but for the price as well as the experience I highly recommend it.
- Hector (8/5): UBICACION - TODO EXCELENTE PARA LA UBICACION
- andres camarena (8/5): - Me gusto la vista al mar, lo único que no me gusto es que la habitación esta algo pequeña y que no tenia TV ni aire acondicionado.
- steven (10/5): - Great price, good food, nice people, and wonderful view. Older place, so it’s not the Marriot, but clean, HOT water, and comfortable! I’d certainly stay there again
- Francisco (10/5): - ttt
- Marisol (10/5): - It was a pleasant experience
- ADELAIDA (2/5): Bad experience - The web pictures do not show what the actual rooms look like. Very old beds, sheets, towels, furniture, ect... We got there and the rooms were not ready. At the time of check out the front desk was closed. If you are looking for a family hotel this is not the place. I don't recommend this place at all.
- rod (8/5): Camalu retreat - I visited here many years ago and was hoping to see some big changes by now. The hotel is in just about the same condition it was 11 years ago. Someone has a big vision for the place but has not been able to fulfill the dream so far. I suppose it is because of the secluded location and lack of steady business. I love the place and hope it gets finished some day. I would love to see it in its true grandeur!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The quadruple rooms were not what we expected, specially because we had children with us, but the staff was extremely helpful and allowed us to occupy other rooms that I thought were not available. Afterwards, the experience was perfectly fine.
- stephen (10/5): A nice stay - A great stay- great people- caring
- Mark (8/5): Its Mexico...... - Great food and service. Resort was never finished construction. Dont judge by the exterior alone. Great value for the $30 cost and the ocean view is awesome. Great location for a guys dirt bike trip!
- Laura (8/5): - Would like to have been informed of the long dirt road to the hotel. Isolated nice location and very comfortable bed.
- Tony (2/5): - Booking was not kept. I arrived around 8pm after driving almost 3 hours south of the border. I was nicely offered accomodation on a shared room and/or on a different location which I would have drove for another hour and a half, which is not cool or not to take any of those options and drive back. Of course due to COVID I did not want to share the same room with strangers and did not want to drive in the middle of the night to unknown places due to security issues assotiated to narco violence in this area. They were nice not charging a no show fine or night stay... but that just ruined my plans. Something to take into account when booking...
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The property has a beautiful view to the ocean and that it has a restaurant and bar at the location
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Beautiful view. Friendly service. Delicious food. Great value. We stayed in mid February on a Saturday night and there were very few guests. The beds were hard. But the rooms were clean, with bottled water. Would definitely stay again.
- DUNCAN (10/5): - SUPER SPOT. WATER CAN BE COOL, NOT HOT. DON'T LET THAT STOP YOU.
- Evangelina (8/5): - Good place cheap and with restaurant. Good staff and profesional
- Antonieta (10/5): Estancia en Punta Colonet - Estuvo todo excelente. Lo recomiendo. Solo tener en cuenta que esta a 5 minutos de terracería. Tiene una vista espectacular. Personal muy amable.
- Adam (8/5): Mexico 1D - Typical northern Baja hotel. Hotel looked unfinished, but food was excellent and shower was piping hot with great pressure!! All you need to knock the dust off after that long 1D road trip
- Kisha (10/5): A diamond in the rough - La Cueva Del Pirata is a great place to stay. It’s a typical “Baja”, under construction, needs to be up dated, however, it has some of the best food I’ve had in Baja. The shower is hot in the morning but not so much afterwards, lmao! There is a ton of things to do, fishing , hiking, hanging out by the water and digging for clams. The beds are comfy and the staff is amazing. If you need anything they will help you out. Did I mention the food is amazing! When you over look the simple flaws it truly is a diamond in the rough. I travel with my two Pit Bulls and they too were welcomed as guests, no charge. It’s $10 to camp and $24 for a room. They serve food all day and have a buffet on Sunday night. I had a ton of fun and most definitely will be back.
- Tom (8/5): A pirate's life for me. - Nice place, very remote. Great ocean view. Good customer service.
- Francisco (10/5): - Amazing hotel with an amazing view and really fresh food and staff.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - No cancellations fees, good service
Restrooms need a littke more cleanliness
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The only draw back was the long dirt road leading to the property.
- JG (8/5): - Right next to the ocean. Super quiet. Clean room and the attendant stayed up late for us.
- Maria (4/5): - really disappointed, NO TV, AC, this hotel is still under construction, we were asking directions to find it, it is like 2 or 3 miles from the main road.
- Verified traveler (8/5): million dollar ocean view - this hotel has potential...
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Quality of rooms vary greatly. Some rooms are really nice. Others are ... in need of some work.
- Cain (10/5): Convenient, cool and comfortable. - Great stay. Perfect out of the way place with everything in house. Food service was normal Mexican slow but was excellent. Can't beat the price.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - for the sea lovers
- Verified traveler (4/5): Bad roads to et to the hotel - I did not stay, the hotel was very simple but clean, too isolate it for our guests.. It was a cold day it did not look like there was heat...The road to get to the hotel was bad, there were no signs to get to the hotel...
- edward (8/5): Great Restaurant - Secluded, GREAT FOOD
- Heather (6/5): Not like it appeared in expedia - The road to the hotel is more like a 3km long path. While there are rooms with ocean views the hotel sits atop a high hill with no beach access. The surroundings are rural Mexico but the room was clean and very large with beautiful tile floors. We had two huge balconies that faced the ocean, a king and double bed and TV with satellite channels in English. Beautiful bathroom with only warm water though. The restraint was charming, food was good, not great but the staff was incredible. Our Spanish is very limited, their English non existent but we managed to order beers, ice, extra towels and dinner as well as upgrade our room from partial to full ocean view. And, they take dogs, just watch for the local pooches who wander the area, scrawny and defensive of their turf
- nancy (10/5): Thought there was nothing special in Camalu - You really can’t believe this place is here so after the two mile jaunt off Highway 1 on this bumpy road you come upon the ocean and the hotel! Worth the horrible off road experience!
- Verified traveler (6/5): Best views. Hotel still under construction - Our stay was very short but pleasant. The room was very big and with the best views to the ocean, which was nice.
- Tina (6/5): Hotel is still under construction. - Don't be fouled by the picture of the front and the bedroom. It advertise the hotel has beach view but also view of trash and construsction. The funiture is old and in bad location. I would not go back.
- Miguel (4/5): POOR - THIS PLACE IS 2 MILES AWAY FROM THE HIGHWAY WE HAD A TERRIBLE STAY DUE TO PEOPLE TALK AND DISTURB ALL NIGHT
- nonamous (6/5): - staff could improve more customer service should be very important to them to uptain more tips they were sad and angry but they should know if not for us they would not have any work.
- Dustin (10/5): Perfect for the Mexico Adventurer - Hotel is under construction but I had a wonderful stay there. The food was great! The staff was awesome! The bed was comfy!
The hotel is easy to get to and price was more than reasonable.
I even got two fun surf days right in front of the hotel.
For people that aren't comfortable traveling in Mexico, this might not be the right for you. But for those who love the rustic adventure, this is a real gem.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Needs a lot of work.... - We booked two days at this hotel to bridge our stay in San Quintin. We drove up and were so disappointed that we decided to leave. I can't comment about the interior or their services. I preferred losing my money over the idea of actually staying there. I will not go into details but the exterior(building and premises) were pretty bad.
- dean (10/5): Something else -
I dug it! Super peaceful and quiet, excellent food, awesome Sunday brunch, and so on
- James (8/5): Baja style - Nice place...but the hotel is not finished...the beds were great and the
food is good...i liked the chile rellenos!
- Verified traveler (8/5): Not super luxurious, but a fantastic place. - Not super luxurious, but a fantastic place. Great spot!
- Brent (8/5): Great Hotel on beutiful clifftop location - Nice balcony rooms and very friendly staff which are trying hard to develop the property. An excellent value in Baja hotels. Don't be put off by the 3 Km dirt and gravel road west of Hwy 1. Saw whales spouting / splashing just offshore. Beautiful surf break to look at. Restaurant is nicely priced and serves excellent dishes, especially seafood. We would stay there again without hesitation!
- Linda (6/5): Delightful find "La Cueva" (cave)! - This is Mexico; not "American" Mexico, but Out West Mexico. That said, found this restaurant/hotel on Or itz and being familiar with the area and a bit adventurous, looking at photos and map, decided to try it for ourselves (comfortable Baja travelers) and another couple (first time south of TJ).
I reserved a larger "2 bed" room for our friends at their request, and an even less-expensive "King bed" room for ourselves since my tall husband prefers King. I optioned to Pay On Arrival, not online. Hotel is 2-3 miles of OK dirt road from Camalu; arrive before dark. Upon arrival the staff (1 of 3) graciously showed us the rooms before paying, since they were not expecting to be full that night. Our King bed room was shown first, ground level with ocean view, and would have been OK for us, certainly for their asking price (older and a bit musty-smelling). The small room also had a twin bed in it.
Then we were led upstairs to our friends' slightly more expensive "2 double-bed" room, #18. What a difference, that newer, more spacious room. My husband and I immediately decided to forego the king, and upgraded to an upstairs room, #16.
The building is in a partially finished state, as are many in that area. The grounds are also rustic, partially "finished" plans.
Our tile-floor room opened by sliding glass door to a nice balcony. Other amenities: 2 unopened water bottles, small coffee pot, coffee packets; soap& small packets of shampoo, towels, a working TV.
- Luke (8/5): Quiet, remote, picturesque hotel - I very much enjoyed my stay at Cueva del Pirata. My room had a balcony, and a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean. The hotel is away from town, so there's no noise from Camalú, only the sound of the surf to serenade you to sleep. The staff is very pleasant, and the restaurant has some delicious dishes. Also, El Rosario, and San Quintin are easy drives, and there are some fantastic food, and sights of the ocean to be had in those places too. My only complaint about the hotel would be that the building and the grounds are incomplete. In between my room and the ocean was a muddy construction pit that seems like it was supposed to be a pool eventually, but had been abandoned halfway through. Also parts of the hotel were "under construction" (or more likely construction was abandoned there too) - though those parts were separated from the guest areas.
- Gabriel (10/5): - Great place to stay View is the best and great food!...
- Bonnie (8/5): Nice stop on the trip down the Baja - We were pleased the hotel was as we expected, Easy to find; there are signs on Mex 1 at the corner in the town (the only traffic signal), then a dirt road gets you there. Views were fantastic (we hit the full moon), restaurant/bar good, and rooms basic. Can't beat this place for the money.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good view from second floor
- Near by canyon smells like trash, winds bring the smells to the hotel.
- Erika (6/5): - It was ok, the way to the hotel it's terrible. Was very dark, it was a long dirt road. I thought it will never ending.
- "D" (8/5): reasonable for the price - La Cueva Del Pirata was clean and reasonable for the price. We needed a place to spend the night on our way up the mountain to San Pedro Martin. Restaurant was delicious and the staff very friendly. We watch the local fishermen leave in the early morning.. Breathtaking beach front hotel. there isn't much to do but nature watch.
- Kenneth (8/5): Relax in Camalu - Three of us stayed at the hotel August 8 thru 12, 2016. This is a great hotel to relax and watch the ocean below. The staff was very helpful. Although we didn't eat at the hotel restraint, we bbq'd every night on the patio. During the day we were fishing with the small fleet of fishermen near by. This is our hotel to go to in Mexico.
- Zamora Family (8/5): Quiet Hotel,Good People and Very Relaxing. - Had heard about San Quintin from friends. We've been to Ensenada many times so we wanted to go a bit further. San Quintin is a quiet town. Good people. Very humble...the Hotel is still under construction...we love that staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome, comfortable and happy to be there regardless of how much money you spend....If your looking for a spot that is quiet, relaxing and good food. Stay here.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Not what I expectes - The view was nice, the place was off a dirt road. Outside of the city. Nothing within walking distance, beach not easily accessed. Lots of construction. Noise started before I was out of bed. The view was of mostly unfinished construction.
- Timothy (6/5): - Hotel is under renovation. Restaurant atmosphere was great. Food and service great.
- Todd & Misty (10/5): Out of the way getaway - It could be a hidden treasure. We were on a Baja road trip and went here for a stop. The rooms are nice and basic but if you're looking for a bed a shower and a great view this is the place. We brought a barbecue on our travel but it was windy that day so we went to the restaurant. Great food and great service. We definitely want to go back. When we were there there were a few surfers and off-road adventurers staying as well. Great surf hangout.
- Sharon (8/5): Quiet seclusion on the water - Quiet and secluded. Beautiful view of the ocean. All in all, just a
great place to get away.
- Brian (10/5): Beautiful Getaway - It was a very nice place for the money.
- Ivan (8/5): Nice hotel on a cliff with great views - We spent three nights in the hotel while exploring surrounding surf breaks and were I think the only guests of the hotel . Please note that the hotel is still under construction: it looks like an ancient colliseo - from 3 floors planned only 1.5 are
Completed, rest looks more like ruins rather then proper building. But don't afraid the noise from construction works - it's halted at the moment. Hotel offers great views on the ocean and basic facilities. It was tricky to get hot water running but we solved this issue together with friendly Diego, the only guy who speaks English there. When we stayed, the maid was on vacation so the cleanliness of the room was mere. Long black hairs were all over the place and we had to clean it up on our own. On the other side we came late evening of 1st of January, and the whole place was closed, but they sent a person to meet us and provided with microwave and basic food and drinks. Hotel also runs a nice restaurant with good choice of Mexican meals (lobster was great, but surf and turf sucked btw).
Overall it's a nice place with wild atmosphere and a bit of mad max attitude (some old rusted bulldozers and trucks parked near the hotel add to that feeling). It's far from town, secluded and pretty safe. If you don't look for luxury you can stay there. Sunsets and endless blue sky are much more fascinating rather than dirty room or lack of hot water.
