The windows are amazing, but now filthy. Everything is so old, including the photos. The owner told me he hasn't cleaned the hot tub for 5 years, so you can't use it.

Even though the temperature at night is considerably cooler, there was no fan or any way to move air around. The picture on the booking website are not accurate at all. This facility needs to be updated, cleaned and sanitized. The house has great bones but that's about it. Run!! Do not stay here.
• Robert (4/5): I would never stay here again. - Well, it started with the host not being aware that we were showing up on the day we had reservations, then we were given someone else's room. You can imagine how uncomfortable it was when they showed up! the bathrooms were not clean, the carpet hasn't seen a vacuum in a very long time and there was a dank smell throughout.

It is filthy and the host greeted us naked in a bathrobe that barely covered him. Strange other old men staying there, scantily dressed. Very unsafe and does no reflect the pictures. Think Quentin Tarantino movie!!
• Duane (5/5): An adventure, but won't repeat - Main rooms (bedroom and shared living room, dining room) are lovely, clean, and camera-ready. Property had vacancy at short notice. Just 20 minutes drive away from Kilauea Visitor Center. This house is in a rural area with just gravel roads. I didn't expect that. Going to and from this property violates rental car contracts. The gravel stretch is three quarters of a mile in fair condition, no washboarding or deep ruts. My low-clearance car had no problem at low speed, other than the contract rules. The owner could not take credit cards. Finding and using a distant ATM for unexpected cash payment took time away from my visit. Driveway and parking is on grass on mushy ground; each car created muddy ruts. Microwave hasn't been cleaned in years. Bathroom maintenance was disappointing, with un-closeable unscreened window, many rust spots on lid of waste basket, and swollen cabinet doors that can't close. Half of kitchen sink is unusable from leak.

• Sabryah (10/5): - Leo was a great host at Fern Forest. It is a beautiful property, very quiet and kind of out off the beaten path. The house itself is beautiful with 3 to 4 room with their own restrooms and refrigerators. The communal living space is awesome if you get lucky, you may be the only one staying there and will have the run of the entire house I will definitely stay again!

The location is beautiful, tucked away in the amazing Fern Forest with lots of space, not far from city activities and surrounded by wonderful sight seeing opportunities. Our Host was very welcoming and helpful with tons of knowledge about the Island history and the best places to visit. Great place for couples getaway or fun with friends and family. I plan to come back next trip. Aloha!

• Sandra (8/5): Fern Forest Getaway allowed us to spend one night to explore Volcano National Park. - The location was great! Very close to both Volcano Village and to Volcano National Park. We enjoyed the quiet and spaciousness of the area surrounding the home. We rented two of the comfortable bedrooms; the third one was vacant so we had the whole house to ourselves. Leonard was very accommodating. We accidentally left a rain coat; he called us to let us know and offered to mail it back to us. We had questions about the TV--Leonard was only a phone call away and came right away to help us out. Don't be concerned about the short drive on gravel road to the place. We googled the property address and we easily found it!

This place should not be allowed to do business on the Expedia platform. This place is not fit to be a vacation accommodation. Expedia should do a better job to assure quality control so customers are not misled to believe the Fern Forest Getaway is a place to stay.

The owner sat with us and made wonderful suggestions for sights to see and places to eat as well as he had knowledge of the history of the area. Every night the frogs sang us to sleep. The house is an older house located in the rain forest and filled with antiques. We quickly felt like we were staying at a friend's house. We would absolutely stay again!

Furthermore, while it is off the main road, it is still convenient to the National park. The price is also right, especially considering the high cost of everything on the Big Island.

Common kitchen area was gross. Place so run down we did not even stay our second night. Awful

Dirt and dust in the corners, dead bugs on the windowsills, the dining table had crumbs and rings on it from previous renters, the furniture was covered in fleece throws that had multiple cigarette burns in them, and the kitchen garbage was sitting bagged on the floor and SMELLED rotten. The refrigerator had a partial package of raw meat in it, and needed to be cleaned. There were black stains on the bathroom ceiling, leakage from the upstairs bath? Or mold? The host said the outside door remains unlocked in case of late arrivals; not very safe if all you can lock is a hollow-core bedroom door.

Pictures on booking.com were misleading and fraudulent. We couldn't stay there, but owner refused to give a refund and booking.com also refused.

Black mold, murder house vibes, probably a scam - I'm in the process of reporting these people everywhere I can so hopefully their scam listings are taken down and no one else suffers my same mistake. Listen to the negative reviews of this place; any positive one is either a sock puppet or maybe from some time in the distant past when this place might have actually been inhabitable. This place doesn't look like it's been cleaned, EVER. The floor and furniture were covered in dust, dirt, debris, dead insects—who knows what else. I had Clorox wipes with me (COVID times), and the one I used on the dresser came away completely black with filth. The windows were already open in our room when we arrived, which I thought was really weird considering it was raining and in general this is the rainy side of the island. Then I looked up and saw, sure enough, the ceilings were infested with black mold. I'm sensitive to mold and even felt sick the next day despite being in this awful house for less than an hour. My husband went up to the kitchen just to get us some water before we could leave, and he told me even the fridge and ice maker were filthy and had clearly never been cleaned. Unfortunately, he didn't think to take a picture of this, we were so preoccupied with just getting out quickly at this point. Aside from the appalling conditions and health hazards left and right, this place and the people we encountered there had a vibe that made us feel very unsafe (and neither of us are cowardly people; we both actually spent years working night security). We arrived around 9 PM, when it was already dark, and the place was very hard to find in the unlit, overgrown forest. The road leading there was also just gravel (this information was not in the listing, of course), and we were worried a few times that our rental sedan wouldn't make it. When we arrived, there was a huge German Shepherd and an older Russian man waiting for us on the porch. I have nothing against Russian people (at least the ones not waging an illegal war on poor, innocent Ukraine), but as our host took us through the house, I got a hard-to-explain but very unsettling vibe from him. At one point, he led us, with no explanation, away from our room and up a dark staircase onto the equally dark and cluttered second floor, and I honestly thought to myself, "Are we about to get murdered?" We were the only guests in the house—everyone else was clearly smart enough to stay away that night—and that fact didn't help our nerves either. The only other person in the house was the Russian man's nephew, who was apparently recently arrived from Moscow and acting as the "security guard." The older man kept telling weird jokes about his "blonde wife," but we never saw her. At first, I wondered if I was just being paranoid, as my husband didn't seem scared to me, but he later told me that when he went to the kitchen by himself, he saw a huge freezer and immediately thought to himself, "I'll bet the 'blonde wife' is in there." I doubt that's actually the case, but I think it's saying something that we both immediately thought this place had murder house vibes. We ended up quietly leaving through the porch door without saying anything to anyone, and we were two big bundles of nerves trying to navigate our way back to civilization in the pitch black. If the people who run this place think this is an acceptable standard of cleanliness to maintain, they are delusional. What I'm ACTUALLY pretty sure of is this place being a scam meant to cheat people out of the booking costs (of course, you pay upfront here). The listing photos are completely inaccurate as far as the cleanliness and condition of the place. And I'm sure these people know if they posted updated photos, they'd get no business. Why bother cleaning and running a legitimate B&B when you can run people off with your horror house and pocket the hundred dollars for a night? They also never contacted me to ask why we just left without using the room, or to ask any other follow up like a normal business would. I think these people know exactly what they're doing, and I hope they get shut down.
• Neela (6/5): - The property was very close the Volcano national park. However you need Google map to find this place because it is in the middle of forest. You need to drive on a 1 lane gravel road. If you have Google map not to difficult to find it. The house was a big, nice house. However, the kitchen and the common area requires good cleaning. There wasn't any cream or even milk powder for a cup of coffee. When we arrived, the host was very nice and explained all about the house and the neighborhood. Only saw him once after that never saw him. The bed and the bathroom was fine. The bathroom could use more cleaning. Overall it was an ok stay.

I was very jet lagged and looking for a not-too-expensive place to crash for one night in that area, and it was perfect for that. A bit of the beaten path (in middle of rain forest) but not too hard to find. Big room and comfortable bed. Didn't interact too much with staff but seemed nice.

• James (10/5): Character in spades - This place was great. I prefer out of town locations. Peaceful. The frogs singing at night. The troop of Geckos that visit you on the porch. Set out some juice for them and watch them scamper about. Bed was comfy. Best sleep I've had in a while. Mr. Leon is a fantastic host. But I feel like I made a friend instead. All the more reason to visit him again. Water was hot for the shower. Also it's nice to have a laundry facility in case you need it. Extra blankets if you get cold. This is not a hotel. This is a home. You should not expect anything different. Plenty of room to spread out and relax. Which is what one should do when you stay here. I learned a little Russian. I love languages and culture. Mr Leon was a character, and his bnb was character in spades. I will be back. Already planning my return to Hilo. And I will stay here again.
• michael (6/5): Our stay at Fern Forest - The house is a bit outdated and a little run down, but overall, the accommodations was a decent night stay and relatively close to Volcano National Park. For what we paid for, we were not expecting a Hilton or a HoJos and nor should you. The bed was comfortable, the sheets were clean, we also had use of the entire living room and kitchen—and pleasantly surprised to a light breakfast (coffee, bagels, peanut butter, jam, etc...), which we made in the morning, and ate on the lanai overlooking the lush property, filled with native vegetation and fruit trees. Leon, our host, gave us great tips on what to do at night, and it was totally worth it. Thanks! Note, the location is in a mostly unpaved road off the main highway, we rented an SUV so it was no problem.
• E3434PImeghans (2/5): Do not go here!!! Run! - Please never go here. We arrived and within one minute we left, running. Such a scary place and not as advertised at all. Everything is gross and moldy. Once I arrived I had the worst feeling and it only continued to get worse as we went to our room. Please do not go here. It’s not worth it, we ended up sleeping in our car because it was better than staying at that creepy place. It was awful so please do not stay here. We literally felt like we were in a horror movie!
• John (2/5): - The property was a mess. The outside needed some serious maintenance. The inside smelled so bad of mold and mildew and was dirty enough for us to not to even stay there. The photos shown are very old photos, it is no where near as nice as it looks in the photos.

• Astrid (4/5): With a little TLC, this could be a nice getaway. - It’s a sweet house, which could be, with a little TLC, made very comfortable. Leon is a nice host with good recommendations at hand. The house has not been cleaned in quite a while. The place is very damp and there is no heat or A/C to dry it out. All of the fixtures are old and many don’t work. There is also a very sweet old dog, who is in bad need of a vet and is clearly very neglected.
• Michael (8/5): Roomy and private. Great location for Volcanoes - I was warmly greeted and made to feel like home. Leon was very kind and resourceful. He gave me a lot of good travel tips about the island and it’s beaches. I’d definitely stay here again!
• Steve (1/5): Very Disappointed - Not too far from Volcano National Park All the furniture was very old, carpets very, very dirty. I was afraid to use anything in the kitchen, even to make sandwiches on the counter. We paid for 2 nights and decided not to stay the second night due to how uncomfortable the filth made us. Not a nice place to stay.

Very cool to hear the frogs chirping at night- they sound - large house/ we booked one room for two but as there were no other guests we had it all to ourselves for the one night that we stayed ! it was down a road in the middle of nowhere in the Fern Forrest. so our GPS did not work when it was time to be notified to turn on the paved road. so missed the easy road and ended up driving a long distance on a hard diet road. All was well as I was with my boyfriend, but it would have been really a bit too isolated & scary if a location for one or two females traveling alone, in my opinion.
• Chris (2/5): - No one on site and no number to call. Place was so remote with nothing around except an old dog and some chickens free roaming. Walked around property looking for someone and reminded us of how the beginning of a horror movie would start

• Robert (8/5): B&B in the Forest - This is a large house in the forest just below the volcano of the Big Island. Only two bedrooms but several large sectional couches for family member to sleep on. No Cable but many streaming options. Needs a sign on the door with instructions and greeting.

When you approche and you enter is dirty, smelling, old … This house as a big potential, however the cleanness is an option that not available. The bathroom is horrible extremely dirty the floor of the shower was black of dirt and the floor full of dust. The toilet desgusting. Tooth past on the ting. The owner is not looking so friendly. The deco is so old fashioned. The worst place ever.

It does not look like the pictures, and the place is not clean, floors need washing. The window in the bathroom was fixed with old plastic bags...
• Robert (8/5): Fern Forest Getaway - We enjoyed our stay. They owner is very helpful and knowledgeable of things to do an places to see. The property could be a bit cleaner, but we were satisfied with our stay for the price and would definitely stay here again. It is very close to Volcano National Park and about a 30 minute drive to Hilo.

• Holly (6/5): - The far drive on back roads was not worth the stay. Amenities were available and fair but cleanliness was on the bottom scale. My daughter had a good time with the dog on site, but it smelled pretty bad at the entry. No a/c and lounge area had all large windows which made it pretty hot in the house. The curtain rode was jenky and fell apart when I opened curtains so had to carefully balance it up again.

• 832MichaelS832 (8/5): Great Experience - Fern Forest Getaway is as advertised, this is a home in the middle of the forest and perfect for getting away from the beaches and business. Close to hiking and very quiet. The Host Leon was great making sure we had everything we needed for the weekend! We will visit again!
• Lee (8/5): Very good - Leon is a great host that provides everything you need it has a beautiful grounds and a friendly watchdog.
• John (10/5): - Best host in the world. Leon bent over backwards to be helpful, even planning things for us to see on the island. There is a full kitchen and three huge common areas, and both indoor and outdoor dining tables. Our room had its own balcony. It is off the beaten path, rustic, and very quiet, but there is a little grocery store at the end of the road. It would be a great place for a large family, as well as for a couple, like us. It was a great location for exploring the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the Puna coast.
• Justyna (8/5): Very good - Host gave us a lot of recommendations about where to go on the island. He basically planned our days, which was very helpful and nice. We enjoyed the sounds of the forest at night very much! just bear in mind that the house is not very clean, I guess tropical humidity is not helping

Guy can’t even refill the soap dispensers and leaves old soap bars from other guests in the shower. Old whiskers errywhere around the sink. Vat is dis, Bratislava?? 😂 Hey at least the incredibly smelly German Shepard “guard dog” actually is very sweet…

The shower was grimy and didn’t drain well and the bedroom carpet was filthy in the corners. Another guest/resident sleeps behind a folding screen in one of the common rooms There is junk laying around in the yard. I nearly walked right back out but it was very late and I was exhausted. The good things: the owner was very nice, as was his dog, and there was interesting decor in the house.

When we arrived owner not around, sat in car honking horn until he finally showed up. He smelled of alcohol and cigarette smoke as if a chain smoker. No breakfast available as advertised, no hot tub as pictured, owner said he hadn't used hot tub in years and was dirty. We are requesting an immediate REFUND!!
• travel_is_a_must (2/5): This is a murder house - run! - I have called booking and checked back. I sent them actual photos. They have NOT updated their site. First off fern forest is essentially a homeless encampment with poor cell service. Folks in Hilo were horrified we almost stayed there and said it’s the highest crime area per capital in the islands. This house is disgusting. We saw the filthy neglected fog on the porch with a bed and some possible poop in what on the booking site is a shiny new porch with a hot tub. Omg. Ridiculous. The ceilings are bowed with mold. It is not liveable. We were there 15 minutes bc it was 11 pm and the moaning and screams from downstairs were so scary we had to get a plan to just get out. There is no banana farm. This is dangerous!!! If I could give negative stars I would.

• James (10/5): - Rustic rural area. Large old house and all amenities working well. Highly recommended for those who like to live with nature. Very peaceful with lots of nature sounds and birds singing. Internet is working well. Kitchen is fully stocked. Lots of berries to pick as well.
• Frank (10/5): Good people. Good stay. Mahalo - This was a last minute one night booking that I wasn't sure what to expect, but it turned out to be one of the best life experiences I've had. Jason, if you're reading this you're my new guru. I had so much fun sitting out on the Lanai with you and Drew listening to you two rap about your amazing pasts and music knowledge. Leon was also very interesting and I would have liked to have chatted with him more. Leon was very concerned about making us feel at home in the accommodations and all the museum quality furniture inside just blew my mind. The bed was very comfortable. We will be staying with you again sometime soon for more nights.

• Ashlynng_8 (2/5): Would Not Recommend - My partner and I arrived at Fern Forest Getaway and noticed a GUN and gas mask respirator sitting on the couch in the main living room. The stairway up to our room was filthy with specks of dirt, hair and other debris. Our room was not clean. The fridge in the room had specks of dirt and loose strands of hair in it. There were dress shirts hanging in the closet and the dresser next to the bed was filled with personal items including prescription medication. The bathroom was also very dirty. There was no shower gel, shampoo or soap in the bottles on the wall. There was a half-used bar of soap sitting in the holder. The floor of the shower was dirty with more loose hairs. The window in the bathroom was broken and could not be closed. There is no screen over the window to prevent bugs from entering the bathroom so we made sure to keep the lights off and keep the en-suite door closed. Connected to the main living room was a panel divider with a single bed behind it and someone's personal items strewn about on the two nearby tables. An individual in the main room was playing loud rave music that could be heard clearly from our room. We could also hear the sounds of private/personal bedroom activities from two people in the room on the floor below us. We did not enjoy our stay and would not recommend this place.

• Jia (2/5): - Please avoid by all means. Not a three star hotel in any dimension. Not even a legit hotel or Bnb property. I wish there are options to upload photos. The place is absolutely filthy. Floors covered with hair, windows and other places mold and mildew. Smells like mildew too. It almost looks like the only cleaning supply they have is an air freshener. You’ll also be in the middle of nowhere and we had to drive to Hilo to get food.
• David (4/5): - There is no signage on the dirt road. GPS is impossible to use to find it. It feels like you are driving into someone's private home with no direction as to where to park. There is a dog that barks constantly outside as you prepare to come in and at one point the dog was free to roam and come up to us as we left. The room was not clean (the bed linen and towels were) and the linen closet was open and in our room. No key to the room. Would never recommend this place and not sure why Orbitz has it.

• Rohit (2/5): - AVOID!!! The property is in the middle of nowhere. It's very secluded with no food options nearby. The last few miles of roads are unpaved and the rain made it worse. The property is just someone's house where they are renting out the rooms. When we arrived, someone was already in our room and they single staff person told us he will clean the room in 15 mins. There is a (nice) dog at the property who is not taken care off. His area smells of his unwashed dog food bowl and his hair were all over the entrance area. We spent 15 mins but did not feel safe to spend the night there and decided to forgo the room/money.
• David (2/5): - Really bad experience. The greater was really creepy and the place stink really bad. This should not be a place to waste your money and especially family experience.
