We had a wonderful time from start to finish, even decided to add an extra night because I didn't want to leave after just two nights. Everything is of an extremely high standard, be it the fantastic food or the impeccable service and incredibly warm welcome from all members of staff.. Very special thanks to Koji Aihara-san and Yukihiro Sato-san and also the young trainee whose name I didn't catch for making our time at Chikusenso truly unforgettable! The rooms, grounds and baths are obviously very nice and the pictures on booking are accurate. We will definitely come back! -

Everything was perfect: spacious room with all amenties that you need, super friendly and helpful staff, beautifully designed lounges and relaxing onsen! The hotel also offers transfer from Sendai station and transportation in the neighbourhood. Additionally I highly recommend to reserve dinner - the food was not only delicious but served beautifully. It is a really marvellous experience. Nothing serious, maybe the WiFi could be a bit stronger

- Margaret (10/5): Heaven is a place on earth - I started grinning like a fool as soon as I entered the grounds of Chikusenso. It is everything the pictures show and so, so much more. I was genuinely too delighted to play it cool. A truly beautiful property complete with a river and at least two waterfalls (the grounds are huge, so I can't be sure there aren't more). Inside the premises are just elegant with unique touches like the enormous replica temple bell in the guest lounge. There are 'public'/shared onsen and for the bashful there are also two lovely private onsen to choose from, where the pools are outside so you can hear the river. But it is the staff who elevate this unique and beautiful place to 'exceptional'. Mr Rajan who welcomed me so warmly on arrival and explained the myriad of amenities and services so perfectly. Mr Li, who explained the property's long history and more recent impressive architectural upgrade with such enthusiasm and whose admiration for the local environment almost persuaded me to go hiking. Michiko, in the restaurant who was so warm and sweet she made me feel like I was staying in her own home and her charming colleague who made me a perfect little chair from a champagne wire. I wish I could name all the staff because without exception, they were all wonderful; kind and attentive without ever intruding. Speaking of the restaurant, make sure you have breakfast and dinner there. Over three days the variety and finesse shown by the chef was spectacular. Sitting at the 'chef's table' let me watch the man in action, and it was a masterclass in calm precision in the kitchen. I left this morning and I am already giving serious thought to coming back in January...what more can I say. Leaving

Room temperature was either too hot or too cold. Very dangerous stairs, hard metal strip on each step about 3mm above carpeting, and there are many levels to this hotel, very dangerous. OSHA would never above anything like this in the USA.

We had tasted Bette beef on all our other stays.For the standard of this hotel, I was expecting more. Also the lounge lobby is souless as no one is around. Suggest some live entertainment/pianist.

- Fabienne (9/5): Superb - Beautifully designed hotel and very spacious comfortable room with super comfortable futons and great bathroom. The female shared bath outdoors is really beautiful and peaceful. The food was very nice and the staff tried to accommodate us with their best English. We had a complimentary private bath reservation included and though it was still nice we unfortunately got moved to Bath 1 because bath 2 wasn't cleaned yet after previous guests. It seems bath 2 would have a much nicer view however.

- Alessandro (10/5): Impressed me before I even got out of the car. - I checked in a bit late in the evening, and as I turned off the main road, my car crossed over a stone bridge suspended over a small ravine carved by the river below. That bridge really separates the Chikusenso from reality. As I parked, I was promptly greeted by a staff member with a flashlight and politely ushered into the reception area. Aesthetically, the whole hotel is a work of art. Rich with wood, stone, and tasteful art pieces to complement the different areas of the hotel, the whole place has a traditional feel, yet mixes in modernity. The best example of this is the shower area in the rooms. It's almost all stone, dark forest green with enough space to comfortably fit two. The staff is excellent and the facilities are spotless. They have outdoor, private baths with great views of the surrounding forest. A great bar, forest trails, spa, and free espresso machines in your room. You'll want for nothing in terms of modern convenience, yet leave with a feeling of traditional Japanese culture as well.

- Thomas (10/5): 里山の竜宮城 - 宮城川崎からすれ違い困難な隘路を抜けてたどり着いたのは、整備の行き届いた広大な林の中のホテルでした。この宿の事前知識がないため、今回のグレードがどのランクかは不明ですが、十分な空間と適切な快適が得られました。 和洋折衷の夜食は好みの分かれる要素があり、スタッフの洗練度や観察能力には改善の余地が認められましたが、よい時間を過ごせました。他の客とのしきりを屏風で得たいところではありました。 朝食は考えられる限りの取り合わせが売りの小皿料理で、満足感を得ました。 帰りはナビの力で葛折りの道を村田に抜けました。
- Verified traveler (10/5): Mountain getaway - This is a pretty special place - incredibly relaxing. There's enough english speaking staff for westerners to get by, and a very capable chef on site serving multicourse breakfast/dinner. There isn't much to do in the surrounding area, but if all you want is a quiet place to retreat and recharge this onsen is perfect. -Once you tire of the hot baths: coffee makers, water dispensers any cozy places to read a book abound. -If you email ahead (3days) there's a shuttle from/to the Sendai high speed rail station (leaving -Less busy during the week -Small gym with two treadmills and a cable machine -Two gender segregated baths (male and female) and two preservable private baths. Our room also had a spectacular shower + tub that I felt guilty never having needed to use -Dinner usually 5-6 courses with plenty of sashimi and delicious beef. I'm an athletic 28 year old male and I definitely didn't go hungry here.

- Peter (10/5): great ryokan in Zao Onsen Miyagi - This is the highest quality Ryokan I have ever stayed in and the individual service is outstanding. However note that this is in Zao Onsen Miyagi prefecture, not the more famous Zao Onsen Yamagata prefecture. Nowhere on the hotels.com website indicate this. This is reached from Sendai, not Yamagata.
