Guest Reviews
- Regis Blanc (10/5): -
- Guillaume (10/5): Sejour fabuleux.
- Catherine (10/5): - Everything is perfect. From you arrive , the room, the onsen, the food, and most importantly the staff are so friendly and make you feels like home. Definitely recommend to stay here.
- Do Quyen (9/5): The staff, especially the old men working in the dining restaurant, are very caring. We feel like home. - Perfect Nothing
- Kim (10/5): -
- Marie Angelica (10/5): -
- Anthony (10/5): Amazing - Staying here is an absolute delight
The best of Japanese cuisine and service and ambience
The staff can not do enough for you
An experience we repeat every year Nothing
- Thalia (10/5): What every hotel and ryokan should strive to be. - Chikusenso Onsen is a beautiful retreat where you find yourself surrounded by both nature and tranquility. All of the amenities are impeccable and it is nearly impossible to not be relaxed during your time there. Everything was wonderful.
- Donald (10/5): Excellent and relaxing experience. - Excellent There were not many activities to do around the hotel or at least no information provided about activities around the hotel.
- Amit (10/5): -
- Adam (10/5): Unforgettable experience. - Breakfast was huge, healthy and very tasty, a solid foundation for a day full of attractions. Coffee very good, but thats obvious in Japan, perfectly composed with fresh food, light but caloric. I have no idea. Being in many luxury ryokans I can easier find what others could improve themselves.
- Anh (10/5): Wonderful beyond words - Exceeded all expectations. The half board meals are extremely generous. I could not eat all the Wagyu beef. Everything worked like in a dream. Will come back every year now.
- Pablo (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sagar (10/5): Exceptional -
- Nantachai (10/5): Exceptional - Breakfast and Dinner were excellent Nothing
- Yingyu (10/5): I will stay in this same resort in the future when I am ready to visit the other points of interest in the same area! - The room, the food, the view, the staffs, the wild cat in the private onsen, and everything else…
The ENTHUSIASM, KNOWLEDGE AND WARMTH of the friendly people working in the hotel - Especially Mr. Li Fan - because of his thoughtful arrangements, I delightedly experience the resort’s services and got to see what I wanted to see in the Zao area - with EASE and PEACE like a breeze!!! 🤩🙏 Oh, I must emphasize that - Mr. Li speaks English and Mandarin FLUENTLY - that’s… definitely NOT easy to run into in Japan!!!
And Ms. 橫山道子 - She is SUPER FRIENDLY!!! 🙏
I am very happy and grateful for my 一期一會 in 竹泉莊! IF I must be PICKY -
Too much food is offered for dinner. I appreciate the different dishes - but the quantity of some kind can be less to save for the resort and the earth!
- Wang (9/5): Superb - Great hotel and amazing food!
- Peter (10/5): Incredible Onsen Ryokan - worthy of the five star rating. You will find it extremely difficult to leave here and start c - In short: it's an absolutely fantastic onsen.
We had a wonderful time from start to finish, even decided to add an extra night because I didn't want to leave after just two nights.
Everything is of an extremely high standard, be it the fantastic food or the impeccable service and incredibly warm welcome from all members of staff..
Very special thanks to Koji Aihara-san and Yukihiro Sato-san and also the young trainee whose name I didn't catch for making our time at Chikusenso truly unforgettable!
The rooms, grounds and baths are obviously very nice and the pictures on booking are accurate.
We will definitely come back! -
- Lai (10/5): A gem in the mountains - A very refine establishment
- Cheryl (10/5): Great and comfortable experience. - Staff are nice. Facilities are great. Dinner and breakfast are delicious. We were given snacks as night food. Private onsen was available. Can see stars at night. Its location is a bit far away
- Wei-yao (8/5): Very good -
- Anthony (10/5): Superb - This is the best Japanese experience
The surrounds are luxurious and subdued
The staff are very friendly and helpful
The food is excellent and a truly superb Japanese experience
A place to really relax
- Berta (10/5): We were treated as royals - Everything!
Amazing place. It’s a little far
(10/5): Exceptional - Every detail is designed perfectly, including interior and architecture itself. If you love design, you have to come. Private onsen you have to try.
- Areski (10/5): Unique boutique hotel. Outstanding - Elegant , service , dinner
- Kit (10/5): Exceptional -
- Kai (10/5): Exceptional -
- Katarzyna (10/5): Exceptional - It was an amazing stay at 竹泉荘 Chikusenso Onsen. Everything was perfect: spacious room with all amenties that you need, super friendly and helpful staff, beautifully designed lounges and relaxing onsen! The hotel also offers transfer from Sendai station and transportation in the neighbourhood.
Additionally I highly recommend to reserve dinner - the food was not only delicious but served beautifully. It is a really marvellous experience. Nothing serious, maybe the WiFi could be a bit stronger
- Margaret (10/5): Heaven is a place on earth - I started grinning like a fool as soon as I entered the grounds of Chikusenso. It is everything the pictures show and so, so much more. I was genuinely too delighted to play it cool.
A truly beautiful property complete with a river and at least two waterfalls (the grounds are huge, so I can't be sure there aren't more).
Inside the premises are just elegant with unique touches like the enormous replica temple bell in the guest lounge. There are 'public'/shared onsen and for the bashful there are also two lovely private onsen to choose from, where the pools are outside so you can hear the river.
But it is the staff who elevate this unique and beautiful place to 'exceptional'. Mr Rajan who welcomed me so warmly on arrival and explained the myriad of amenities and services so perfectly. Mr Li, who explained the property's long history and more recent impressive architectural upgrade with such enthusiasm and whose admiration for the local environment almost persuaded me to go hiking. Michiko, in the restaurant who was so warm and sweet she made me feel like I was staying in her own home and her charming colleague who made me a perfect little chair from a champagne wire. I wish I could name all the staff because without exception, they were all wonderful; kind and attentive without ever intruding.
Speaking of the restaurant, make sure you have breakfast and dinner there. Over three days the variety and finesse shown by the chef was spectacular. Sitting at the 'chef's table' let me watch the man in action, and it was a masterclass in calm precision in the kitchen.
I left this morning and I am already giving serious thought to coming back in January...what more can I say. Leaving
- Lea (7/5): I stayed four nights at $1200/night, including meals. NOT WORTH THE MONEY! - Private Onsen with temperature control. Very uncomfortable furniture, cushions kept sliding off the chairs. Room temperature was either too hot or too cold. Very dangerous stairs, hard metal strip on each step about 3mm above carpeting, and there are many levels to this hotel, very dangerous. OSHA would never above anything like this in the USA.
- Peter (10/5): Relaxing time in a peaceful location with superb service - Location was great, meals were superb, onsen was great
- Belinda (6/5): Good room & service but food was average & forgettable - Room with onsen is nice Dinner was not very authentic and quite a disappointment. Out of our 10 days in Japan,This was the worse food. Too much of a fusion & western concept. Food was forgettable. We had tasted Bette beef on all our other stays. For the standard of this hotel, I was expecting more. Also the lounge lobby is souless as no one is around. Suggest some live entertainment/pianist.
- Anthony (10/5): A time of complete rest and immersion in Japanese food and service - The extremely high level of service and ambience Nothing
- Paayal (10/5): Hidden gem, wish I had stayed longer. - Cost of food is high but the quality was good and tasty. Beautifully presented too.
- Jamie (10/5): Incredible - Everything was exceptional, it is a bit pricey but the value is definitely there. The food, staff, and overall service were beyond expectation. The only problem is its location, it is a bit out of the way. (worth the trip though)
- Ssu (10/5): The private onset is perfect. The dinner and the breakfast is also delicious. - onset, dinner, breakfast, services.
- Jonathan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Vansamorn (10/5): Exceptional - Excellent service, good food, very nice room and onsen.
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Rolando (8/5): Super relaxing … - I like the service and being friendly of the staff.Super clean . To our bartender he so sweet , thank you for the magic you showed to us , it’s amazing !!! None
- Lawan (9/5): Superb -
- Lawan (9/5): Superb -
- Lawan (9/5): Superb -
- Stewart (9/5): Superb -
- Fabienne (9/5): Superb - Beautifully designed hotel and very spacious comfortable room with super comfortable futons and great bathroom. The female shared bath outdoors is really beautiful and peaceful. The food was very nice and the staff tried to accommodate us with their best English. We had a complimentary private bath reservation included and though it was still nice we unfortunately got moved to Bath 1 because bath 2 wasn't cleaned yet after previous guests. It seems bath 2 would have a much nicer view however.
- Sk (9/5): A lovely, quiet and serene place to stay! - Everything! The team was very thoughtful and took care of us very well during our stay. Food was exquisite with the lovely plating. It was very enjoyable and luxurious. Nothing unless you can fault the team for providing too much food.
- Anthony (10/5): A very top end Japanese experience. Ambience was amazing. Private Onsen A very special experience - amazing staff
amazing food
amazing amenities nothing
- Margaret (10/5): Exceptional -

- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5):
- Alessandro (10/5): Impressed me before I even got out of the car. - I checked in a bit late in the evening, and as I turned off the main road, my car crossed over a stone bridge suspended over a small ravine carved by the river below. That bridge really separates the Chikusenso from reality. As I parked, I was promptly greeted by a staff member with a flashlight and politely ushered into the reception area. Aesthetically, the whole hotel is a work of art. Rich with wood, stone, and tasteful art pieces to complement the different areas of the hotel, the whole place has a traditional feel, yet mixes in modernity. The best example of this is the shower area in the rooms. It's almost all stone, dark forest green with enough space to comfortably fit two. The staff is excellent and the facilities are spotless. They have outdoor, private baths with great views of the surrounding forest. A great bar, forest trails, spa, and free espresso machines in your room. You'll want for nothing in terms of modern convenience, yet leave with a feeling of traditional Japanese culture as well.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Mountain getaway - This is a pretty special place - incredibly relaxing. There's enough english speaking staff for westerners to get by, and a very capable chef on site serving multicourse breakfast/dinner.
There isn't much to do in the surrounding area, but if all you want is a quiet place to retreat and recharge this onsen is perfect.
-Once you tire of the hot baths: coffee makers, water dispensers any cozy places to read a book abound.
-If you email ahead (3days) there's a shuttle from/to the Sendai high speed rail station (leaving
-Less busy during the week
-Small gym with two treadmills and a cable machine
-Two gender segregated baths (male and female) and two preservable private baths. Our room also had a spectacular shower + tub that I felt guilty never having needed to use
-Dinner usually 5-6 courses with plenty of sashimi and delicious beef. I'm an athletic 28 year old male and I definitely didn't go hungry here.
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Verified traveler (10/5): Beautiful ryokan with tranquil gardens - Very relaxing with our own private onsen on our deck. The food was amazing and the staff very attentive. Highly recommended
- Peter (10/5): great ryokan in Zao Onsen Miyagi - This is the highest quality Ryokan I have ever stayed in and the individual service is outstanding. However note that this is in Zao Onsen Miyagi prefecture, not the more famous Zao Onsen Yamagata prefecture. Nowhere on the hotels.com website indicate this. This is reached from Sendai, not Yamagata.
