Guest Reviews
- Sharon (8/5): - Lovely accommodation, friendly staff and food was great, only down side was radiators in our room did not come on so was a little cold.
- Janice (8/5): - Good place, friendly staff
- Keith (6/5): - Nice folk, but not enough of them! Breakfast was poor and the service sub-standard. No options for evening food other than Indian which was average quality and overpriced. Overall the hotel is tired and needs an uplift.
- Richard (6/5): - Good welcome at reception but no offer to help with heavy bags. Very steep, narrow staircase to bedrooms. Decoration tired. Some traffic noise from main road outside.
- Rosie (8/5): - Staff are very friendly and caring.
It is an old building so cant expect it to be perfect. Our room was nice and on a very hot night, they had put a fan in our room, so slept well.
Breakfast could be better. If you dont want a cooked breakfast (which was freshly cooked for us), there is little choice.
Definitely stay there again
- Jonathan (6/5): Great stay but needs updating! - Stayed for work. Frank, the owner is a lovely friendly chap, with great local knowledge. My room was in dire need of updating. There was some black mould on the wall in the bathroom. The bed was not very comfortable as the mattress was worn out! There was no table to work on, just a tea and coffee table. The place is in dire need of an update! Breakfast was good but no homemade fruit compote as on the menu while I was there.
- Katy (8/5): - Booked it for convenience, I think it was correctly priced for fairly basic accommodation. Good in house Indian restaurant
- Alok (10/5): - Great option for family with great Indian food option for dinner. Breakfast was good as well. Great stay overall
- Caroline (6/5): Dated - Staff were lovely but this is not a hotel room worth £115. Very dated. Broken window. Wallpaper peeling away. Cobwebs all over the ceiling. Pipes that sing whenever anyone on this floor flushes a toilet. Walking in the front door to be greeted with buckets as the ceiling leaks should have told me what to expect.
- David (10/5): Dog friendly - Short mini break, first time visitors.
Very dog friendly & would be happy to stay there again
- Gavin (10/5): - Amazing stay and overwelming help from Frank when i really needed it.
So good We've already booked for next year.
- Adam (6/5): - Great staff, great downstairs with great bar and garden and good choice of beers, wines and spirits. Downside; noisy plumbing. When toilet flushed pipes 'sang' for many minutes. Had absolutely no hot water for two night stay. Shower was just a trickle. On check-out mentioned lack of hot water. Response; "hotel is very full so that's why there was no hot water" I'm not happy to pay £110 a night - regardless of how great the staff and breakfast was - to hear that as an excuse. It's 2024, not 1954. Sadly, cannot recommend or will return - in spire of great staff, bar and breakfast.
- Richard (6/5): Average - Weird dining experience! Room was ok and clean
- Kim (10/5): - Very friendly staff
- Verified traveler (4/5): Disappointing stay. - Pros:
The owners (I think) were very friendly and attentive.
Cons:
Other staff members were not helpful. One of them stank of alcohol at 9am when we came for breakfast. When asked for a high chair this staff member came back with one that was covered in grime and dirt, without any awareness of its state (we were the only guests with a baby so no idea how long it had festered in that condition).
The breakfast on a weekend is advertised as a widely varying buffet between 8-10am. We arrived at 9 to see that it was barely stocked. A few cold sausages, bacon and some cold scrambled eggs... We were left looking for staff to ask where the rest was, could we get butter or condiments, etc. Nothing was ready - apparently they were understaffed that weekend. Half an hour would elapse before we got to sit down and eat the cold food. Even the coffee was a pot of instant because no one could work the real coffee machine!
The building and rooms require a lot of modernisation, but our rating doesn't relate to this. Our rating of the condition/cleanliness relates to the torn lino bathroom floor, the cracked bathtub(!), hairs in the bed, and the cobwebs on the bathroom ceiling!
I'm not sure what the normal price is for hotels in this area, I realise there isn't much choice, but we felt that it was overpriced for the stay and experience we had. We won't be coming back...
- M (8/5): Olde world - Friendly helpful staff in old rural hotel. A real taste of the Cotswolds. Ample parking close to hotel. Good food in pleasant bar area. Be prepared for old slightly uneven floors much in keeping with the age and style of the place. Enjoyed my stay and would stay again.
- Barry (6/5): - Hosts very welcoming on arrival. Average scores given for following reasons: floors needed cleaning before breakfast as food lodged under table leg when moved table. Service at both dinner and breakfast was hit and miss. Long waits for some but very quick service for others. Tables with more than 2 guests were served half the orders then long delay before rest of table dinners arrived. Planning in kitchen needs work. Decor upstairs tired but clean. If you want to take your dog away with you, this is the place to go.
- Leonie (10/5): - Wonderful relaxed atmosphere, the staff were great and made one feel at home.
Breakfast was to die for, I had poached eggs on mushroom and spinach on a bagel drizzled with hollandaise sauce, yum.
- Ron (8/5): - Stayed two nights, staff were very friendly and the food was excellent. Would visit again when in the area.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - It was shut, answer phone to say not open until August 1st😡
- neil (8/5): Overnight stay - Nice hotel. Friendly staff. Suited our travel needs
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The food was excellent as was the staff. The owner took the time to make me sure we were fine.
- Francis (10/5): - Good and amazing
- Richard (8/5): - Room was a little tired and the bed wasn't the best.
Staff and food were great.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Old building which could do with some freshening up with regards painting and updating furniture in the bedrooms but very clean and the beds were comfortable . Ideal location if you were looking to visit areas of the Cotswolds.
- Mr rh (4/5): The room was not clean enough to stay in! - My Partner suffers with certain allergies. We appreciated that this hotel is 'dog friendly', but our room smelt so strongly of wet / dirty dogs, that it was impossible for us to stay in the room that we had been allocated. I was not happy to tolerate the dirty smell and my partner started suffering from and allergic reaction.
The receptionist was very nice, and also apologetic, but there were no more rooms available, so we had to leave and find alternative accommodation. The room quite clearly had not been cleaned well enough!
We had paid up front for the room through Hotels.com, so the receptionist stated that we could not have a refund! We ended up booking another hotel through Hotels.com, so paid twice for our room!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Receptionist was very welcoming and informative. The food at the restaurant was very good and well presented. There is a lovely area for sitting outside and enjoying a game of croquet if you wanted.
The place is somewhat dated in terms of decor and if you are in the area of room 10 you can expect an early morning wakeup when the kitchen staff start the extractor fan!
Nevertheless a lovely location which suited us well.
- John (8/5): Relaxing stay - Restful stay, room a little dated, welcoming and friendly staff
- Rachel (10/5): - Lovely hotel....friendly helpful staff....lovely served breakfast, in fact all the food was good. Very quiet and peaceful, beds very comfortable, fresh towels both days we were there. The hotel has beautiful grounds . We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely return
- Rupert (10/5): ayfield House Hotel - Used as a base for a party weekend. Very comfortable and very friendly
- Ruth (6/5): - Average 3 star hotel with a hopeless shower.
- Matt (10/5): - A nice place to stay with a really good breakfast and friendly staff. Some of the communal areas could probably use a little refurbishment soon though.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The staff couldn't be any more helpful; this is a huge positive. The place is maybe a little tired in places, but not so bad I wouldn't return. Food was good, bedroom we stayed in was large, and very clean.
- Nigel (10/5): - Shower over the bath, not very good in this age,hit and miss to get right temperature.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We only stayed one night but I would recommend this Hotel to any one. The staff were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Thank you Mayfield House.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - We only stayed for one night but i would recommend this Hotel to any one. The staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Thank you Mayfield House.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Staff welcoming, polite, helpful and a beautifully cooked breakfast.
- tara (10/5): the outstanding Mayfield hotel - our stay was exceptional the staff and the food were excellent ,and we will definately return again next year thankyou
- Jon (10/5): Fantastic Service - Fantastic service. I arrived late to a puncture en-route and so I'd missed the restaurant. Nevertheless, the hotel still made me a sandwich and chips on arrival at 21:30. Great breakfast
- Juliet (10/5): - Take our dog so have used several times
- Mrs S M (8/5): My cotswolds break - I have stayed in this hotel before and found it comfortable and welcoming. The food is very good.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Just stayed one night. Very satisfied with room , service and staff. Only downside, no gluten free bread available with breakfast, although I had previously advised hotel that one guest was gluten free. Visited westombirt arboretum next day, well worth a visit.
- Heather (8/5): - Good room upgrade to a large uncluttered room with a lovely wet room. (Would have preferred a different coloured/textured towel to use as a floor towel when exiting the shower.) Though food was good, I prefer it to be served a lot hotter.
Staff very friendly and helpful.
- Lynne (10/5): - It was a great experience, lovely staff very helpful.
Rooms were clean and comfortable. Beds were lovely.
Very quiet and relaxing. Will return for a longer stay .
Took my 87yr old mother , and our dog .
You can take your dog into the snug and have them with you while you eat , very accommodating.
Great dog walk across the road .
- Mathilde (6/5): - One of the bed was was broken (springs were absent/broken) so was no support and resulting of falling from the bed.
Room was fine, simple, a bit "old-ish" but ok.
The shower was not functioning properly : the shower head was with cold /medium water while at same time the tape for the bath was running with boiling water. Impossible to have only the shower running. This should be fixed !
- kathleen (8/5): overnight stay - Staff very helpful and friendly, restaurant food was very good, room and bathroom somewhat dated. Top floor room with sloping ceiling and I banged my head a few times.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - We felt the restaurant staff need more training in service levels.
A bit robotic.
- Elisabeth (10/5): Staff couldn’t be more helpful - Nothing too fancy but everything you need. My husband is disabled and the manager was really helpful in terms of access to breakfast room which is normally up several steps. My only issue was the limited breakfast menu although I was able to order two items from the full English without issue.
- Peter (8/5): A historical hotel within the Cotswolds - Excellent old historical hotel within close proximity to bigger villages but located in a unique place in itself and a Hare’s breath from the Cotswolds
- Verified traveler (6/5): A bit of a time warp - The room (no2) was very tired and in need of some updating - there was a long split in the bathroom linoleum. The shower barely worked with only a dribble of water available making for a very variable temperature. On the up side the staff serving breakfast and running reception were very pleasant and the food was OK. Facilities as expected for 3 star property, it would be good if they worked properly. Overall, I felt like I was stuck in the early 1980s.
- AJ (10/5): Friendly welcome, helpful staff. - At checked in the staff made sure my Mum was shown her room and was comfortable first before seeing to me.
Breakfast was excellent and when someone asked about places to visit, the staff where very knowledgeable about the area.
- GERARD (10/5): A real Gem - Lovely hotel in a quiet location offering a fantastic breakfast each morning
- Sally (8/5): Great short break - Great location for visiting the Cotswolds. Lovely country hotel. Great welcome, spacious comfortable room. Excellent food in the restaurant and great choice at breakfast
- Verified traveler (6/5): A bit tired - A bit tired
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good accommodation in a pleasant location - Good basic hotel in a rural village. The room was spacious and the bed reasonably comfortable. Breakfast was good and the bar had a pleasant outside terrace area.
- peter (8/5): - Nice hotel very friendly staff with good meals. the hotel is a little shabby in places and I banged my head on the stairs while carrying my bag up but the manager had offered to help with our baggage so my own fault and I only did it once
- Peter (6/5): Run down - The room was old fashioned and run down, something from the 1990's, hopeless in bath shower!! Front door of the reception is completely rotten. Staff however were very friendly and helpful and a good breakfast was enjoyed.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Needs a coat of paint in places. Also, no soap in bathroom and morning paper - had to go and ask for it.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good hotel in a nice spot.
A little dated but all very clean and tidy.
Good room with a comfortable bed and all usual facilities. A good breakfast this morning.
Would stay again
- Kim (8/5): Nice gem - Friendly staff, excellent breakfast.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good base for conference somewhere else. Alan
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Convenient for our use
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Best things for us were the very helpful service from all the staff and excellent quality of the cooked breakfast.
- Janet (6/5): - This hotel is in a lovely setting but a few problems ensued. Supposed check in time was 3pm but room was not ready until 3:30 . The beds were lumpy and not very comfortable. Ordered a newspaper but it wasn’t delivered. I was under the impression that our stay included breakfast but on checking out found out it wasn’t. No one informed us at the dining room of this so we could make a choice wether to eat there or elsewhere . Overall it seemed that the staff were a bit haphazard and not organised. Would not stay again.
- Kevin (6/5): OK for a short stopover. - We stayed in the main building which was fine until other guests started to move around in the morning, the building is old and seemed to resonate every movement and sound. Some rooms are in separate buildings which would undoubtedly be quieter.
- Mr I (10/5): A relaxed and welcoming place to stay - The hotel is a bit 1980s in style (that is not a criticism, but may put some people off). Our room was comfortable, but the bathroom was both very small and needing a bit of an update. However, the best thing about this hotel is the very friendly and helpful staff who help create a relaxed and welcoming environment. The chef went out of his way to accommodate my wife's food intolerances, creating an entire new menu just for her on both nights of our stay (this is exceptional in our experience) and all the front of house staff were extremely friendly. The food was also very good.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Pleasant stay - Nice hotel, good location, enjoyed my stay
- Rebecca (8/5): Good value and comfortable. Excellent breakfast. - Shower was out of order in our room and we were woken early because of the light coming through the roof windows. But everything else was good.
- Chris (10/5): Will stay again for sure - The Hotel was close to my work for the weekend hence the choice
on arrival the staff coudnt have been more helpful and showed me to my room in an annex away from the main building
The room was warm, clean and very comfy making the whole weekend a delight and i will aim to book here again when next in the area
- Susan (10/5): Friendly and relaxing. - This is a lovely small hotel on the edge of the Cotswolds. It needs a bit of modernising but it has a lovely atmosphere and the staff are wonderful. Our room was very comfortable although the bathroom needs updating. The food was excellent. Apparently a new chef arrived in January. We could eat everything on the menu so ate in the restaurant both nights we were there. It was comfortable, friendly and relaxing. We would definitely stay there again.
- Patricia (4/5): I wouldn't recommend - The room was horrible it has nothing to do with the photos they advertise. I wonder how they had such a high rate.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very nice and very comfortable
- Lee (8/5): Best Western Mayfield House - Room nice but bathroom was old and shower was a bit pants.
- roy (10/5): staff very helpful and the meal was very good . - great little hotel with character .
- Mark (2/5): AVOID! - We booked 6 weeks in advance. When we arrived we were not expected and we're given a twin room, we had booked a "Multiple bed family room". Dinner was aweful. The newspaper we ordered was not supplied. Never go back.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Lovely hotel for a nights stay - Enjoyable stay, great meal in the restaurant and very attentive staff
- Richard (8/5): Convenient for a short stay - Came to Malmesbury for family reasons. Stayed a couple of nights here. It was reasonably quiet. It worked well. A good breakfast. Room was a bit shabby (Noisey boiler outside door, low shower pressure, radiator not working - temp electric heater instead).
- Verified traveler (8/5): Good food, great atmosphere; a place to relax. - The most noticeable part of our stay were the staff at the hotel who were friendly, listened, and made our stay very enjoyable. In particular, the breakfast and evening restaurant staff were exceptional. The food was delicious.
- Michael (10/5): Top marks - Good room, great welcome, good food, what more can I say?
- Mr Richard Saunderson (6/5): - The service was very nice, the food was very nice and the room was lovely. However, there was no hot water in the morning, so I was unable to have a shower.
- tj (8/5): - Nice hotel, staff were friendly and helpful, food was good and good location for exploring the cotswolds. Easy to find, carparking and free internet. Only thing is the cleanliness of the room could be improved, other guests hairs and contact lenses are a bit off putting, however i would reccommend this hotel and stay here again if i was planning to visit the area.
