Guest Reviews
- Patricia Lynn (10/5): - This was a great place to stay The management was simple wonderful. The rooms were clean and in great shape. We were able to get great information of the surrounding area.
We were able to eat dinner at the Inn. Breakfast was included, which was delicious. The food was excellent. It was a good sampling of food in Wales.
- Joy (10/5): Little gem of a pub and b@b. - Little gem of a pub with fantastic food and just a walk away a Roman milestone worth a visit. Reasonable drinks at the bar and frequented by the locals which gave it a warm and welcoming feel.
- Anna (10/5): - Beautiful place, very friendly and amazing customer service. Would recommend to anyone
- George (8/5): Samson Inn - Arrived on a cold and rainy December evening, intending to visit the nearby Hadrian’s Wall the next morning. We were delighted to find a clean room and a dinner menu with interesting dishes. A fine breakfast sent us on our way. The staff was friendly and helpful.
- Robert (10/5): Great place to stay near Hadrians wll - Great place with superb food - No mobile signal but hotel wifi worked perfectly
Loved it
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The Samson Inn was very clean with good food and drink and the location was good with plenty of short walks around the countryside. The only thing i would say is the towels in the bedroom need to be softer as it was like drying yourself with sandpaper.
- Denise (10/5): Great location, great stay - Excellent stay at the Samson Inn. Clean room, friendly staff, good food and reasonable prices.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Everything was cozy and welcoming, great location as well.
Breakfasts were great as were the 2 evening meals. Top notch!
- Adrian (10/5): Unbeatable Samson .... Inn!! - Pea soup fog so cannot tell you about the area, that was both morning and night but the hotel, room, service and food was 1st class!!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Really good food whether breakfast or the evening menu-well recommended. Rooms very comfortable and everything that you needed. Nice bed and a powerful shower- all good.
2 different cask beers on offer.
Bar closed at 10pm though!
- Sharon (8/5): Off the beaten track - Lovely place to stay situated across the road from the Newcastle to Carlisle railway line. Don’t let that put you off as it’s very quiet at night.
The superior room is lovely and large and toiletries are devine
Lovely fresh food...good priced drinks...breakfast is a must.
The service here is very good. A very friendly team.
- Peter (2/5): Did not stay in this pub as better at home - We arrived at 3 pm in this small pub miles from anywear and ordered a beer after the bar person had finished her conversation with her friend. We were informed that we could sit anywhere which I found odd as I intended to do just that. There were only about six people in the bar but in the hour and a half we were there one women made a twenty minute call on speaker phone and another group quite some way from us kept us entertained with their personal experiences. We gathered from the bar persons conversation that they were very busy for evening meal but they could squeeze this group in as they intended to flip tables. This place is not a high class restaurant and once you have had your meal we did not know were you could have sat.Our whole experience for just a drink was not pleasant so we left thinking we would have a far more comfortable evening in our country cottage just an hour away over the border.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Stayed for two nights.
Clean, spacious room, comfortable bed.
Tea and coffee facilities all Clipper.
Lovely view of Gilsland from our window (superior room).
We paid for a three course evening meal and everything was delicious.
Husband had cooked breakfast, I had scrambled eggs. Again, delicious food. Also cereal, fruit, youghurt and toast on offer as well as tea and coffee.
Only criticism was the old kettle in our room that was a little difficult to use.
Well worth a stay, very relaxing, great food, cheap cider and walking distance from a great part of Hadrian's Wall
- Chris (10/5): - great staff, food and room
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Comfy rooms and good food and beer.
- Elizabeth (10/5): Great little place, clean, quiet and comfy - The room was very nice, as was the ensuite. The bed was comfy, the pillows not so much but that’s personal preference, others would find them fine. The staff were nice and helpful. Breakfast was very nice too, the coffee wasn’t very good though so would go for tea next time. Breakfast was made to order so was hot and fresh. I’d definitely stay here again.
- Hannah (10/5): Beautiful and we'll cared for - We stayed here for 1 night. Everything was spotless in a beautiful, peaceful part of the country. The food was lovely with a roaring fire and breakfast the next morning. The bed was comfortable and facilities clean and practical (the shower design was interesting). There are some beautiful walks here and the pub is easily accessible with on site parking. Will 10/10 visit again later this or next year!
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Nice food, nice beer, nice bed, nice price
Was only there for one night, but next time I’m in the area I’ll definitely look to stay here again.
- Zena (8/5): Weekend break hotel - Located in a fairly isolated village off the main Newcastle - Carlilse road. Plenty of parking. Pleasant bar and dining areas although a little on the cold side the first night, the room was similar, but much warmer the second night. Staff very welcoming and helpful. Excellent choice of lager, Peroni and well kept. Breakfast very large and local produce very tasty. Evening meal very disappointing, portion size on small side and not well heated. We would not dine there again and found a wonderful alternative for the Saturday evening.
We wanted a quiet hotel for a relaxing break nd found it.
- Chris (6/5): Good access to Hadrian's Wall attractions - We were driving around the UK and stopped here for two nights to visit some of the Hadrian's Wall attractions and it's great for that. The restaurant was the only food option around at night that we could tell, but it was quite good. Our room most spacious enough and the bed was ok.
The biggest problem we had though was the hot water. It was not working very well and eventually died on us on the second day which was not the best thing to happen as it was late Nov 2016 and quite cold. Fortunately, the staff gave us access to another room so we could use the showers there instead - and these were fantastic. I feel that the problems with our hot water should have been discovered before we checked in, or at least when the room was being serviced the next day.
If it wasn't for the hot water issue, I'd give an extra point in some of the ratings.
