Guest Reviews
- Robert (10/5): Relaxing for an overnighter - Warm welcome, great Sunday evening meal, with drinks ofcourse and a great nights sleep. Our nervous dog found the back grass area a treat and very little passing traffic made our stay even better. A minor detail but parking here and getting cases etc to the room is challenging if the very small car park (maybe 5-cars) is full. But we managed.
- Linda (10/5): Weekend stay - Comfortable room, excellent breakfast. Had evening meal good value for money
- Christopher (9/5): - The excellent staff and service we received during the evening meal
- Paul (9/5): Friendly out of the way country pub with Excellent Food. Small bedroom a bit expensive, - Good Value, Excellent Dinner in a friendly family pub.
Very restful sleep in comfy bed.
Peaceful out of the way village.
Very good breakfast. The room was expensive for it`s size and condition.
TV shelf was too small for TV mount so TV could not be turned towards bed fully, chance of TV getting broken.
The room and bathroom was a bit tired and in need of some love.
- stephen (10/5): Great location and food was amazing will visit again soon - Food was amazing and staff were great Nothing
- Sarah (10/5): -
- Eleanor (10/5): Will be using this hotel each time we travel to the Lake District visiting family - Dinner in the evening was exceptional and breakfast was the same Nothing
- Joseph (8/5): - It was advertised as higher end than it was. Breakfast was adequate but certainly nothing special.
- Debbie (8/5): Great place to stay - The staff in particular, nothing too much trouble even when extremely busy.
The location, perfect for our trip.
Our room, even though the bathroom was a little 'tight' was perfectly clean and comfortable with everything we needed.
The food, we only ate once but was a great Sunday roast. n/a
- Susan (9/5): -
- Richard (8/5): Good place to stay - Good location. Staff very pleasant and helpful. Good food in the evening and breakfast Room was rather compact but comfortable enough for the night we stayed.
- JOHN (9/5): A nice country pub overnight stop with good grub - Excellent food although breakfast choice was perhaps a little limited. Comfortable bed but Bathroom was a tight squeeze for the loo. Nice quiet location despite facing the road. Ideal for a short stop. We had asked that the room be set up as a twin room; it was not but it would have been a mission to re-set it after we had arrived. We managed.
- Mandy (9/5): Very relaxing stay and excellent food both breakfast and evening meals on our three day break - Quaint country inn

Great accommodating staff, excellent food both breakfast and evening meals
Lovely sunny beer garden ...yes in March. Room a little snug if heavy travellers like us.
- Jennifer (10/5): Great place to stay, clean, lovely team - Clean, beautifully located and very comfortable accommodation. Nothing
- Ann (9/5): Lovely! - A lovely modernised old pub in a small village with lots of character and excellent staff service. It had an unusually good selection of vegetarian food. The bedroom was rather small.
- Neil (8/5): -
- Tony (8/5): - Excellent poached eggs , took some some tips on improving mine , thank you .
- Andrea (4/5): Needs updating. - Breakfast was good. Lots of choice of fruit and staff made an effort to come in early for us.
Location was excellent at the end of our walk. Room and bathroom was very small. Outdated and not particularly clean e.g. cobwebs on lampshade and dust on skirting boards. Bedding was fine.
- Mr Barry (9/5): -
- John (10/5): Ideal overnight break in our journey. - Very friendly and helpful staff, room was clean if a little small (bijou) and very comfortable. Very good pub food and an excellent breakfast. Dog friendly but no evidence of previous canine occupation! Nothing not to like!
- Lesley (10/5): Cozy and comfy - Super comfy bed
- Debbie (9/5): - Lovely comfortable stay. Beds are very comfortable, room was warm. Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Location is great, within walking distance of Kirkby Stephen and lots of walks in the vicinity. Food very good, especially the breakfast. Unfortunately we had a message from them the day after we arrived home to say the conditioner in our room was missing and did we "accidentally pack it in our bag"!! I have stopped in a few places but never once been accused of taking toiletries. It would not put me off stopping there however. They keep shampoo/body wash and conditioner in the bathroom cabinet. We only found it halfway through our stay and used our own but there was no conditioner in our room. I would advise to check when you arrive and if either are missing let the staff know.

- Lita (9/5): Lovely location great breakfast ! - Friendly staff very clean The bed was a bit uncomfortable needs upgrading
- Claudia (8/5): -
- Tim (7/5): - All went well but for the very small size of the room. The room was very small. It was difficult for two occupants to move around the room. It would have been better to be regarded as a single room.
- Juliet (10/5): Great food and loverly staff -
- Janet (8/5): Overnight stay - Lovely comfortable bed, great bathroom and good breakfast
- Emma (8/5): -
- Christopher (8/5): - Nice room, helpful and happy staff Being an old inn, room was a bit on the small side, other than that fine.
- Marieke (9/5): - vriendelijke staff..We konden zelfs vroeger ontbijten omdat we de dag daarna een lange wandeling hadden.
- John (9/5): Overall this is lovely establishment and I would not hesitate to come again or to recommend it. - The room was very smart, clean, and well fitted out. It overlooked the front of the pub but the road is very quiet, and the windows are double glazed. We had an excellent evening meal in the bar and the breakfast was superb.
We arrived by bicycles and we were met by someone who quickly arranged for them to be stored in the corner of their function room. This was a great help.
This is a great place to stay and we really enjoyed ourselves. There are some lovely short walks close by which we investigated after checking in. The room was quite compact. The design of the bedstead had the two legs at the foot sticking out and both me and my partner slammed our shins into these protrusions. This design of bedstead is not suitable for a compact room and should be swapped for a more suitable one.
Breakfast starts at a relatively late time compared to most other establishments and this is a problem if someone wants to get away smartly as we did. We were cycling over Tan Hill and needed a good start.
- Mark (7/5): -

- Siobhan (10/5): Beautiful place to stay in a quiet little village, great food and drink - It was a lovely property with great character, very comfortable stay and I would fully recommend
- Maria (8/5): Fair price per night - ok for just 1 night - Suitable location & nice breakfast that was hot The room was quite small but understand it is an old building.
Bedside lamp switches could have been positioned better.
- Darren (8/5): - Staff were great and the food for breakfast and one evening meal that we had great Room was on the small side, but doesn't detract from a wonderful few days stay
- Gary (10/5): -
- David (10/5): A typical country pub - dinner very popular, so remember to book. - Everything a small independent country pub should be. Car park is tiny but plenty of on-street parking available. Rooms could be bigger.
- Terry (8/5): -
- Robin (8/5): -
- Smith (10/5): -
- Hein (9/5): - Heel vriendelijk onthaal, netjes, super lekker avondmaal.
- Stephen (9/5): Gorgeous old Inn with lovely food - A lovely old Inn with quirky rooms and lots of history. The food was lovely both for dinner and at breakfast time. There was a gorgeous view across the dales from our bedroom window. The garden out back was gorgeous. A hikers' and dog lovers' paradise. Being asked repeatedly if we were sure we wanted a double room on arrival.

- Donna (9/5): -
- judith (8/5): Great fun - Great location for our needs Rooms a bit of a squeeze but fine
- Chris (9/5): Great place for overnight stay in Coast to Coast walk. - Good room. Friendly staff. Excellent evening meal. Good breakfast. Nothing to call out.
- Jim (8/5): Lovely quiet village pub in the sticks. Serves good quality food and the bar is open all day - Lovely village pub which served good food. We stayed for dinner and had the breakfast as well - both were yummy. Small bed and the quilt cover just about fitted. Lucky it was summer.
- Serena (8/5): - Welcoming staff, good food, comfortable bed. Relaxing place to sit outside and enjoy a few drinks after our meal
- Kate (8/5): -
- Stephen (9/5): Proper country pub with great food - Friendly staff, great food, clean property, loads of hot water from the shower, comfy bed Room and en-suite quite small
- Simon (7/5): - The Black Bull is located in the centre of the small and quiet village of Nateby, not far from Kirkby Stephen. The pub has lots of character and is popular with locals. The menu for supper was good and we ate well both nights. All the staff were friendly and attentive. Breakfast was also good and cooked to order. There are lovely walks all around Nateby. The location is convenient for access to the Yorkshire Dales and also within quick and easy reach of the M6 from either junction 38 or 37, making it ideal for overnight stays going north or south. We were in one of the front rooms overlooking the road. It was quite small and cozy, and the bathroom was quite cramped. The double bed was of a good size and comfortable. The road is pretty quiet at night, so this wasn't a problem. There was lighting either side of the bed, but none at the end of the room by the mirror. For an overnight stay this wouldn't be a problem, but we decided in advance to stay for a second night, and bearing in mind this a slightly larger room with a larger bathroom would have been preferable. The best room is room 1, which overlooks the back of the pub and is larger with a larger and better equipped bathroom.
- H.C.R. (7/5): - At dinner the first choice was sold out, the second also, and the third the same. We got a sorry. Any compensation fi in the form of a free drink or coffee would have been appreciated.
- Carolina (9/5): Comfy stay at a lovely pub. - Wonderful pub to stay for our Coast to Coast trek. The dining area was a wonderful room with stone walls. The meal was delicious. It was out of the way for walkers on the C2C (quite a distance from Kirkby-Stephen).
- John (8/5): -
- Lisa (10/5): Had a lovely stay, very welcoming - Very friendly and clean N/A
- Bernard (10/5): - Lovely place stayed there a few times.

- Lisa (7/5): Schöne Lage, kleines Zimmer - Das Black Bull liegt sehr idyllisch direkt an Schafweiden. Vom Biergarten hat man einen herrlichen Blick. Das Zimmer war extrem klein. Wir konnten nicht mal unsere Koffer richtig öffnen.
