Guest Reviews
- Amita (8/5): - Very friendly welcome. The complimentary cereals were a lovely touch.
- Agustin (10/5): Great place to stay - Really nice place with our private bathroom. The host was amazing, and even offered to do our laundry for a very reasonable fee.
- Samantha (10/5): - Place was clean and the host was super kind. A bit of an uphill walk if youre coming from the town but it is really close to a lovely viewpoint that overlooks the town. Very nice at sunset!
- Kimberly (10/5): - It was a very cozy, clean, and well appointed room. Nice little touches like snacks, soft drinks, juice, milk, yogourt, and cereal left for guests.
- John (10/5): - This place is great! The innkeeper is super sweet and helpful. Parking is easy for a town that has very little free parking. It's a ten-minute walk to downtown. Great, cute room. No complaints. Would definitely stay here again.
- Kerry-Anne (10/5): - The venue is up a gradual slope, being around a 10 minute walk from the town centre however the view of the harbour during the walk is beautiful. Being close to the pulpit hill viewpoint makes a nice trip being only a couple minutes walk from the venue.
Carolyn was very welcoming and seeing me as a female sole traveler, made me feel very safe and gave me suggestions for the best places to visit.
The bedroom was perfect and although it is a shared bathroom, which I was nervous about, this proved to be no problem at all. The cute little breakfast selection and variety of refreshments were just lovely.
I’ll definitely return on my next trip to Oban !
- Elaine (10/5): - .
- Mark (8/5): - A bit of a climb on a narrow road, from the down town, if you are walking.
- Michelle (10/5): - This is a beautiful property and well worth a visit. Despite my train arriving after check-in, it was very easy to access my room. The room was a good size and very clean. The hostess is friendly and extremely accommodating. If you use public transportation, be aware that the property is near Pulpit Hill, so there is some steep walking. However, buses do serve this area, and you can get a taxi. I came to Scotland to hike, so the uphill walk was a welcome part of the trip. The house was less than 15 15-minute walk from the bus station, ferry, and city centre, so very convenient for tourists. I would highly recommend a stay at Don Muir House.
- Ellen (10/5): - The proprietress, Caroline, was welcoming and helpful. She had thoughtfully provided snacks and breakfast foods / drinks for the room. The room was cozy, clean, and quiet. We had a beautiful view during our walk down to Oban town, caught a gorgeous sunset, and enjoyed dinner at the Oban Brasserie (in the Perle Oban hotel). Thank you for a lovely stay!
- Danial (10/5): - Caroline was an excellent host. She greeted me upon arrival and recommended things to do and places to visit on my stay here. The room was very tidy, had a heater and complimentary coffee, tea and some snacks for breakfast. Everything was well maintained and the views nearby of Oban were spectacular
- Laura (4/5): - Cold faucet never turned off, refrigerator was loud, no shampoo, conditioner or Kleenex. Room and towels were had mildew scent. Strenuous walk to and from restaurants bed sages in the misdle
- irene (10/5): - Very friendly and helpful proprietor. Lovely room with added extras.
- Henry (10/5): - Amazing place to stay for the night before catching the ferry, lovely clean and quiet with a comfy bed and easy parking. Would definitely recommend this place
- Jess (10/5): Cosy place! - I travelled solo to Oban and had the cosiest stay. The land lady was super friendly and attentive. I was so warm and felt so safe.
- Heather (10/5): - My husband and I have been traveling Scotland for our honeymoon. We found this guest house when looking for places to stay on our travels. We absolutely LOVED it. Our host, Caroline was wonderful and welcoming. Could not have asked for a better host.
Our room was clean, and spacious. We had some cereal, snacks, milk, and orange juice in our room. There was also tea and coffee provided. We were extremely close to town and parking was super easy and close. We will definitely be coming back when we are able to travel again.
- Harry (10/5): - On a hill with a great view. Accommodations were excellent. A bit difficult to find for someone not familiar with the area and non-numbered house addresses. Just ask for directions from one of the neighbors you’ll likely find walking their dog and you’ll be fine.
- DONNA (10/5): - We loved staying at Don Muir. Caroline was helpful, responsive and just a nice lady. Instructions were clear and she provided a nice little complimentary breakfast basket in our spotless room. Free parking is nearby, but you can unload and load right at her place. The walk to downtown Oban is about 15 minutes one way. We were happy to walk as parking in Oban was not great. Bed was very comfy and shower was great.
- Lawrence (10/5): - Location was perfect, convenient and close to Oban attractions
- Scott (10/5): - Close to Pulpit hill view of Oban bay, only a 15 minute walk to oban town centre, 2 minute drive to the ferry terminal. It is room only but a welcoming pack was put in the room, including, cereals, crisps and soft drinks, in the fridge was milk, orange juice and yoghurts. Lovely host.
- Serafina (10/5): - .
- Cynthia (10/5): - Great walk to town, breathe taking view from Pulpit Hill.
- Miriam (8/5): - The Don Muir guest house is very quiet, and quite comfortable. I would recommend a small table in the room.
- Gabriella (10/5): - Clean, easy checkin, affordable, safe.
- Colin (10/5): Great guest house - Lovely guest out, some great complimentary snacks, very good welcome by friendly host. Up a steep hill in Oban but not far to walk down to pier, shops etc
- Norman (10/5): - Some complimentary breakfast supplies in the room
- David (10/5): Great spot in Oban - A very well set up room for us, for a last minute pick in Oban. Though not large, everything we needed was there, working, and comfy and quiet.
We recc the Oban Inn, along the far edge of town near the waterfront, for great food and atmosphere. And the live caeli (sp?) music was really good.
- Michael (10/5): - Friendly
Nice touch to lay out fullbacks
- Scott (10/5): Great quick stay - Excellent short stay as we prepare to take the ferry to Mull. Great proximity to Oban, up on the hill above the town, so quiet and peaceful. Incredible view facing west from the car park! Lovely stay in a clean and comfy room.
- Catherine (8/5): - A wonderful hidden location above Oban but really an easy walk down a steep road off Pulpit Hill to the back of the CalMac ferry dock. Just pay attention to passing cars.
- Peter (8/5): - The fridge had some fruit juice and milk for hot drinks which was lovely. Even though it wasn't a b and b, the owner had thoughtfully put some breakfast items in the room which we appreciated as we had to be in the queue for the ferry to Coll at 6.15am.
- John (8/5): - The view of the city and harbor from Pulpit Hill lookout was fantastic!!
- Ian (10/5): - Owner was very friendly and helpful.Easy check in and out.Quiet neighborhood in a beautiful town
- Carmen (10/5): - The Owner was very friendly and helpful. The room was very quaint.
- Louise (10/5): - Nice quiet accommodation, and certainly plenty of exercise walking up and down the hill to town!
- Marrisa (10/5): - We had a lovely stay, definitely would stay here again.
- Leah (10/5): - Lovely place, host met us as we came in. Room was stalked with delicious goodies and fresh milk in fridge. A little tight to get to hotel but worth the drive up the mountain as the views are amazing. Convenient parking just up the road.
- James (10/5): - Carolyne was an excellent host. Meeting us at check-in and explaining the property. When she noticed we had mobility problems, she immediately asked if we would like to change to a downstairs room. The room was spotlessly clean, very good shower and plenty of tea, coffee makings and snacks. Parking was approx 50m away and no problem. Our host was available if we had any problems, of which we had none. The property is up a steep hill. My suggestion would be walk down (approx 12 minutes)and take a taxi back up (£5 approx). Overall a priceworthy and most enjoyable stay
Only 1 problem, despite our best efforts, we were unable to detect any smell of pine, vomit, dampness or smelly dogs around mentioned in other reviews lol. Will definitely return if the host will have us.
- Pamela (10/5): Friendly, comfortable stay - I thoroughly enjoyed my one night at the guesthouse. The host could not have been nicer or more helpful. My room was great with nice touches of hospitality. The bathroom could use a little updating but nothing major—it all worked!
Others have mentioned the steep uphill location, so I’ll just say, yes, it’s a climb. If you arrive with lots of luggage and don’t have a car, maybe get a taxi! But you end up on a nice quiet road with great views.
- David (6/5): - We found it difficult to find. Suggest Room 5 needs heavier curtains to stop sunshine/daylight so early in morning.
- Marilyn (10/5): - Good location for ferries. Quiet area and nice room. Check-in easy, and parking nearby.
- Linda (10/5): - Room very clean & good amenities
- Kathie (6/5): - The room was cean and nicely decorated. Bar fridge with milk and juice. The bed was in need of being replaced (room #2) as extremely soft and we rolled into the middle. Needs towel bars or hooks in the toilet as no where to hang the towels.
- Kathie (6/5): - Nice to have a fridge with juice and milk. Needed a new bed as wsy to soft and we sank into the middle. No where to hang towels in the toilet.
- Lois (10/5): - Convenient to town. Lovely hostess
- Douglas (10/5): - All good but a mat in the bath would be useful.
- Ian (10/5): - The accommodation was quiet, comfortable and the owner was very friendly and helpful.
- Phil (10/5): - A great B&B Comfortable, clean & friendly. Highly recommend.
- Marjorie (10/5): - The woman in charge was friendly and helpful. The location is relatively close to train station but at the top of a winding steep road. It is scenic but one would enjoy it more if you are not walking.
- James (10/5): - Very welcoming and cheerful owner. We ordered a breakfast which was brought to our room. Easy walk into town, though up and down a steep hill so some may find difficult. Car parking easy. We enjoyed our stay and would go again.
- Pauline (8/5): Lovely , comfy and a guid breakfast - Cosy and quiet and tip top breakfast served bang on time
- Philip (6/5): - the room was comfortable. The bathroom was disappointing. The shower floor was soft underfoot and the water pressure was poor. The towels were not absorbent. Having said that the room was a reasonable price and was fine for our one night there.
- Paul (10/5): - Friendly owner and a comfortable room
- Verified traveler (10/5): - very pleasant stay nice room and helpful staff
- adam (10/5): Nice b&b - All good, many thanks
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Ran out of toilet paper with no extra any where in the room, terrible shower going from extremely hot to freezing cold and having to stand on the edge. Directions for breakfast are unclear so we didn’t get what we thought. Wifi didn’t work in our room. Bed was uncomfortable
- Richard (10/5): lovely stay. was made to feel very welcome - lovely clean rooms. nice welcome on arrival.convenient for the ferry .. walking distance. however please note there is no parking at the guest house. however there is free off road parking at the view point up the road.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The owner was very welcoming as I entered the b&b. Very good service and highly recommended going if your in Oban.
- Abigail (10/5): Great location, and cozy stay. - Our stay was wonderful, and our host was so helpful. She had breakfast in our room everyday, and the location was beautiful. One of our favorite stays by far! We were on our honeymoon, and out of all the cities we visited, Oban was our favorite.
- John (10/5): Great Oban stay. - Good place to stay. Close to ferry port and town. Continental breakfast but much to choose from. Lovely host, Christine, was on hand for any help required. Would definitely stay here again.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - About a ten minute walk to Oban and the ferry terminal. Breakfast is provided in your room with a decent selection of items to choose from. This location is within a five minute walk to Pulpit Hill. Overall, we enjoyed our stay.
- Eshita (2/5): Terrible travel lodging experience - Not sure about the rest of the reviews, maybe our rooms were the outlier or maybe the quality has deteriorated quite significantly recently. We (luckily) had a booking for 1 night only. We reached the guest house at night and checked ourselves in since it was after hours. As we entered the room, there was perceptible dampness in the room and we noticed seepage on the walls. It was night time and we were tired from our travels, so we decided to ignore it. That would be fine if that were the end of it. In the middle of the night, my legs started itching quite badly. I turned on the lights and both my husband and I sat up. He said he was having a hard time sleeping too because of the constant itching. That's when we realized the beds had bed bugs. We removed the bed sheets, turned the mattress over, spread out towels on the bed and slept off.
We managed to get a few more hours of sleep before waking up to the clanking of dishes in the kitchen. We woke up, got dressed, picked up our bags and went down. We tried explaining to the lady owner about what had happened, but she kept insisting that nobody else had ever faced that problem before so she doesn't believe that's a problem (what?) She also said that the rooms are soundproof (clearly not) so we shouldn't have gotten disturbed. Basically, she outrightly denied everything we experienced.
Anyway, no matter what she did it wouldn't help solve our matters so we decided to cut our losses and leave.
- Brandi (8/5): - We had a little trouble finding the house but were pleased when we did so. The room was neat and clean as a pin. The food was excellent and I liked that you could choose from a menu the night before. The town was close by and you could walk to it.
- Hilary (10/5): Home from home - Very comfortable stay in lovely quiet room. Very welcoming hostess and good breakfast provided.Spacious room in quiet residential area.
- Hilary (8/5): Comfortable room. Would recommend. - Comfortable good sized room. Excellent value. Helpful hostess and good breakfast. Easy walk down to train station and ferry. Quite a steep hill up but taxis helpful.
- Audrie (8/5): Quiet Accommodation On the Hill - The guest house is located just a short walk up the hill from the ferry terminal. Excellent view of the port and sea by foot. My room was clean & comfy and a stone’s throw from the shared bathroom. Beautiful greenery surrounds the property and the area is generally quiet. Caroline the hostess was wonderful.
- Anne (10/5): - Two of our favorite hosts and one of our favorite towns from our 3 week tour of Scotland! We wished our stay was longer than two days. Carolyn, I hope you enjoyed the Prosecco!
- Alan (10/5): - My Stay Was Fantastic .Great Host's Made To Order Full Breakfast ,Clean & Tidy Room , Location Was Spot On As It's Close To Oban Train Station & Ferry Terminal Only a 10 min Walk .
- colin (10/5): Great little bed and breakfast, a gem. - Room was spacious, clean and very comfortable, the hosts could not have been more helpful or attentive, would definitely stay again. Good value as well
- Meghan (8/5): Great guesthouse on a hill. - Host are friendly and eager to please, including vegetarian breakfasts and help with luggage. Room and en-suite were spacious and immaculately clean. Breakfasts were very good, with fresh ingredients. Parking is free, though not on site. Wi-fi is fast, and charging outlets are near head of bed. Dining room is bright and looks upon trees. House is located at the top of a steep hill—an easy walk down to town, but used taxi for return back up. We very much enjoyed our stay.
- Jim (8/5): Nice stay - We enjoyed our stay the couple who run it are very friendly and the breakfast was very nice. Only problem was the intermittent WiFi but that is beyond their control due to overhead cabling
- Julia (10/5): Lovely stay - We were greeted by Caroline who was very friendly and helpful in getting us settled in and familiar with the area. Parking nearby or in the drive if possible. Room was comfortable with nice little coffee/tea station and all the amenities we needed (hair dryer, small fridge). Room was private and breakfast service in the dining room was a nice touch and had great options to choose from. A little hike up the hill if your walking in but easily accessible by car. Shower temperature was a little finicky if you're not familiar with these systems, and tv a tad small, but overall really a nice stay. You can tell they've been doing this for some time and are pros at hosting guests.
- Minami (10/5): Tis is not guest house, even better than hotel! - Definitely a pleasant stay with and the compliement breakfast was fantastic which u have plenty of variety! They are respect of their customer and do the best for u!!highly recommended if u visit Oban!!
- Jacob (10/5): - the lady who runs it was incredible and even had brekkie waiting for us when we needed to leave very early!
- Rebecca (10/5): lovely B&B - The hosts are lovely! Our room was huge and so comfy. The breakfast was great!
- Mark (10/5): Very nice. - Very clean and comfortable. Made to feel welcome. Excellent service. Good breakfast too. Great all round.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Really warm and welcoming. Excellent location and near to town. Very cosy and would definitely stay there again
- Names (10/5): Top marks to Don Muir Guest House - Could not fault our stay. Met by the host and showed us our room which was spotlessly clean. Great information given and great breakfast. Would definatly stay there again if we stayed in beautiful Oban.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Great B&B in Oban. - The breakfasts were outstanding. The hosts were fun to talk to and were both quite helpful and accommodating. The room was comfortable and clean and well equipped. The wifi signal was sometimes tricky to get, but was satisfactory. We had a bit of difficulty finding the B&B when we first drove into town, mostly because there are very few street signs in Oban. Later I found out that Waze would have taken me right to the B&B; so my printed map didn't help much, but the GPS was fine. You have to park in a nearby public parking lot, which has a gorgeous view, but if walking 150 yards or so uphill would be a problem for you, you should be aware of this. We walked into town several times from the B&B. It's a nice walk, but there is a strenuous climb up the hill. We enjoy hiking, so for us, this was a great place to stay.
- Jarrell (10/5): Great Value! - Caroline Hoyland is the owner with her husband and they were very nice and made you comfortable and welcomed. After checking in she gave us recommendations on where to eat and more importantly told us where NOT to go.
My two sons 25,26 and I stayed two nights and liked the breakfast, they had a menu to check off for the next morning on what to eat. Cereal, toast, juice as well as tea and coffee were the staples they you could choose how you wanted your egg prepared, sausage and other items making it a filling meal. They would also prepare you a to go bag breakfast if you were taking the early tours.
Our room was a nice size and everything was clean.
- Howard (10/5): Wonderful experience! - Excellent host, breakfast, room. Could not have asked for a better experience. The location is a little off the beaten path, but because of that, there was no noise.
- tom (10/5): Operators are great - Hosts were great. Good breakfast. Room a bit small.
- island hoppers (8/5): Perfect for short overnight stay. - Owner very friendly. Everything we needed. Just needed a bed for the night after a late ferry.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Our one night stay - Our stay at the Don Muir guest House was fine - it was perfectly clean and the food was very good - the downside was the location - it was quite difficult to find - if one was driving as we were one had to be a very experienced driver
- Timothy (10/5): Great guesthouse in Oban - Lovely place, excellent breakfast!
