Guest Reviews
- Julie (6/5): - Good parking, very friendly helpful staff.
Room could do with an update, we were above the kitchen which was very noisy, hence we had to close the windows. This didn’t cut out very much noise and also made for a stuffy hot uncomfortable night.
- Vicky (8/5): - Double room was clean and pleasant. Restaurant menu had lots of options and was served quickly and piping hot. Breakfast was lovely and my poached egg was perfectly cooked. Large parking area and gardens and the atmosphere in the bar in the evening was very pleasant. Quite isolated so not possible to walk anywhere in the evening. I was made very welcome by everyone.
- Michael (10/5): - Clean, comfortable and a super friendly welcome. Abundant parking. Lovely pub restaurant.
- Matthew (4/5): Awful hotel - Avoid like the plague!!! - Apart from the brilliant bar/restaurant staff, this was probably the worst "hotel" I have ever stayed in - especially for the money. The food was barely edible, and the room (number 4) was beyond tired. The bed was uncomfortable, and the room was right next to some kind of air conditioning unit that was noisy and made sleep impossible!! The shower was hardly functioning (more of a dribble, than a shower)... Breakfast was overcooked and poor in the extreme. Not the sort of evening you need the night before a business meeting. Staff 5* Hotel 0*
- Mike (6/5): - Lovely staff and great location for our activities. Price was great value, but reflective of the age and condition of the property. Included breakfast was good, and the lady serving breakfast on the 4th August was lovely. Thank you 😄
- Christine (10/5): - We had a great time, the staff were attentive and friendly. The food was good and the room perfect. We could highly recommend a stay at The Red Lion, you won't be disappointed.
- nicola (10/5): - A great one night stay as a family with 2 children. Staff were all helpful and friendly and food was good for both dinner and breakfast. Would stay again and would definitely recommend.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Road noise a problem - The road noise was a serious issue for us, particularly as we had requested a quiet room. But the service at the hotel was mostly fine.
- Samuel (10/5): Family run pub/ campsite - Run by a friendly family. Room was small but nice funiture/ equiped. An old house bur cosy
- Kimberleigh (10/5): - The staff was absolutely lovely. They helped with everything and were so delightful. Im definitely staying there again!
- eugene (10/5): - We didn't stay at the Red Lion since Expedia somehow didn't forward our reservation- which we didn't find out until we arrived and they were fully booked. But the hotel bent over backwards to find us a room in a nearby hotel about 10 minutes away and apologized profusely about the error (which was not their fault). 5 stars for their professionalism and customer service. Be warry of booking this hotel through this site though, the Red Lion indicated another potential guest had the same problem earlier this year.
- Anna (10/5): - We had a lovely few days stay last Bank Holiday, it is a charming pub with great staff, nothing is too much for them, very friendly and breakfast was Best! Delicious! My only suggestion would be to have at least brewed coffee! Beautiful place and very calm even though there is open bar downstairs.
- christopher (10/5): - Clean rooms, good food and very friendly staff
- Mr Michael (10/5): - Lovely old pub.
Staff excellent.
- Paul (8/5): Pleasant Stay - Lovely stay, very friendly staff, rooms comfortable & clean, great breakfast.
Nice traditional pub with an Olde World charm. Nice location close to Lulworth Cove & Dorchester
- Jevgenia (10/5): - Most welcome I’ve ever felt anywhere! Great food and lovely atmosphere.
- Nithin (6/5): - Not worth the money.
- Vanitha (10/5): - Nothing to mention
- Paul (6/5): Dorset stay - Hotel was a little old fashioned, but we enjoyed our stay, it was handy for our visit to the Dorset coast and friends, staff were friendly and accommodating, food was good, plenty of parking
- Paul (10/5): Welcoming cozy country pub - Very welcoming cozy country pub. Tasty breakfast included - eggs done really well. Gluten free options. Just the base we needed for a weekend walking on the coast nearby
- Joe (10/5): - even though i was staying above a very busy pub i could not hear anything once in my room. the food was well cooked and speedy.
- Mark (10/5): - Great home from home breakfast was a bit overcooked but would happily recommend and will be staying again in the future
- chi choi (10/5): - The host is very friendly, polite
- timothy (10/5): - Great food, excellent bar. V comfy room, very clean and well appointed. Excellent Car Park. Staff were brilliant. I picked this for closeness to our client's premises and will do so again. A real littel gem of a find. can definitely recommend the Red Lion lager!!
- Stewart (10/5): - Whole stay was excellent
- Dasa (8/5): Loved our stay - A lovely small hotel with a lot to offer! The staff was welcoming and attentive, making our stay enjoyable. Breakfast was delicious, with a nice variety of cereals that our kids loved. Our room was spacious, clean, and comfortable, and it was great that they provided a dog bed for our pet, which made us feel very welcome
- Priunka (10/5): - Room was very clean and perfect sized for my family. Only one problem at night , my next door neighbour was so loud when they were talking, even we could hear clearly their conversations. Its not Red Lion's fault. People need to consider others. The host was very very friendly and professional as well. We had supper and breakfast. Both were very good. We enjoyed the food.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Friendly Service and Convenience, but Noisy Nights - Staff were friendly, helpful, and accommodating. The hotel offers dairy-free options, which is great.
Unfortunately, we arrived shortly after the kitchen closed, so we only had the included breakfast of cereal, toast, and a full English.
The room was spacious enough for our family of four with comfortable beds. However, we found the toilet quite noisy and the walls thin, as we could hear our neighbors talking through the night.
Overall, a decent place to stay for a short one or two-night stay.
- Bipin (10/5): - Nice staff, proper homemade food and spotless. Large Parking space for vehicles.Liked it.
- Victoria (8/5): - The staff were really good - friendly and efficient - and the food was great too. But we were there during a heatwave and our room was very hot. A fan was supplied but it didn’t make much difference and if we left the windows open loads of flies came in so sleeping was a bit uncomfortable. Not much the pub could do I guess. The bed itself was comfy though and the bathroom very clean.
- Antony (8/5): Pleasant Room in good location - Stayed while on a break to Dorset, close to Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove. Close to lots of towns and sites in the area with easy road access.
Friendly staff and breakfast included.
Large, spacious room that was clean and tidy.
This is an old pub and therefore the building is not like a modern hotel but that is the charm of staying in the English countryside.
Our room was upstairs and no lift should that be a necessity.
- Kushal D (10/5): - Our stay at the Red Lion Hotel was very pleasant. The room was cozy, vibe in the Pub was full of energy in the evening watching sports games, and the morning breakfast was lovely. Our car broke down nearby and the owners were very supportive and helped us in every way they could to find alternatives. We really thank them for their help and appreciate their kindness.
- STEPHEN (10/5): - This is a wonderful and rustic B and B. The rooms are small, but the innkeepers are wonderful and make up for any shortcoming. The food in the tavern is fantastic. Lizzie (the owner) is an angel and she saved the day for us when we could not get transportation to our event. She drove us herself!!!!
- Michael (8/5): 4 Star - Good accommodation friendly helpful staff .Was a 4 star
basic room but adequate ,
- Joe (10/5): - Staff very helpful and friendly
- Adrian (10/5): - Super nice staff, very helpful in getting us a cab.
- Kenneth (10/5): The friendly hotel where everyone smiles - A very warm welcome, greeted by very friendly staff. The room radiator wasn't working but it was fixed within a few minutes. Excellent breakfast in very comfortable surroundings. Perfect location for Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove etc. Very good value for money. Highly recommended.
- Jennifer (10/5): - The host's from the red lion went above and beyond to make our stay excellent 👌 👏 😀 👍
We would not hesitate to stay there again.
Food was excellent and lots of it.
They made you feel welcome. X
- Laura (8/5): - I definitely liked having on-site dining options and that the parking was close by.
- Lauren (10/5): - The staff were very polite, helpful and hospitable. Breakfast was top notch! We felt very looked after and would definitely recommend this B&B is you're visiting Lulworth, Durdle Door or weymouth!
The rooms are comfortable and clean.
Thank you to all staff at the Red Lion! <3
- Claire (10/5): Very family friendly hotel - Staff are all so friendly and welcoming. Felt very well looked after. We had dinner and breakfast here, both were very good. The room was clean with lovely fluffy towels and a reasonable size for a family of 4. Only negatives was that the roast dinner was only available till 3.30pm.
- Angela (10/5): Friendly staff, lovely stay - We were given a large family room which had plenty of space for the 4 of us. The staff were really friendly and helpful, the hotel and room were both very clean throughout , breakfast was very tasty and they were very accommodating to our requests. The shower in our room was not very powerful, but it was still good enough for all of us to have showers (3 of us have long thick hair)
- Sarah (10/5): - The Red Lion is not only inviting, it’s friendly, convenient, cosy, the food is amazing, we had ribs which had been smoked & were delicious. Service is quick & efficient. Staff are super friendly & the owner is awesome. Friendly, helpful, great sense of humour, fantastic host & nothing is too much trouble. Breakfast was delicious with a large range of choices. We had cooked which again was fresh, very tasty & even got croissants to take away for our journey home. We only stayed one night but could have stayed a lot longer. The room was lovely with a big bed & a double sofa bed for our son. It was clean & had everything we needed & more. We will be back in the future & would highly recommend staying here ☺️
- Amit (10/5): - The room was clean, the linen was spotless, and the meals were excellent. The English breakfast was exceptional.
- Marcin (10/5): Wonderful and relaxing - Amazing.Comfy beds.Clean.Relaxing.Everything was so good and the food was delicious.Loved my stay!!!:)
- AKSHAI (8/5): - Kettle should be checked before guest arrive
- Verified traveler (10/5): Good stay - Nice clean room, excellent location, breakfast was very substantial too, literally everything one would need for their stay.
- Royston (10/5): - Everything was so easy, and we were made to feel welcome and I would stay there again
- Matthew (10/5): - It's hard to know where to start but the owners and staff are a good place to start. Extremely friendly and personable, attentive without being overbearing and they make you feel comfortable immediately. The room was small, clean and the bed very comfortable with a lovely view of the countryside. The pub was extremely comfortable and welcoming and within minutes it felt like a place I would be at a couple nights a week if I lived locally. What was really unexpected was that for a small pub with rooms above was that they were extremely knowledgable about food allergies. I'm celiac (very much so) and I was going to miss the beer and food. Except I didn't, they have very good gluten free beer and do an excellent gluten free beer battered fish and chips (with the best chips I've had in years, crisp and fluffy inside) and an English breakfast. They were so careful on what was safe to serve and what not and I had no contamination issues at all. This was easily the best hotel experience I've had in at least two decades and it's not even close. I would vacation here again with my wife just to stay here.
- Andrew (8/5): - Friendly and efficient staff.Good food. Cramped en suite facilities. Noisy main road.
- Benjamin (10/5): - Great place to stay. Alan perfect owner.
- Jennifer (8/5): - A wonderful welcome from Jay. Breakfast was excellent and a great location to visit local attractions!
- Edward (10/5): - What a lovely place to stay, lovely staff and food, 1 of our boys has an eating disorder (ARFID) which can be restrictive and cause issues, and sometimes stress for him, but so happy to say not here, requested just some bacon for breakfast and the owner was happy to do this without questioning why or complicating things, such a pleasant change. Thankyou so much, set the day up for a good one. Hopefully will be back again !!!
- paul (8/5): A warm welcome - The Red Lion is now a family business, and what a lovely family they are. From first welcome to final farewell, they couldn't have looked after us better.
- Wayne (10/5): - Very hospitable staff and great food. Wish we could stay longer.
- Mark (8/5): Good value for money - Good value, nice room but a little small. Staff very friendly and helpful.Great breakfast!
- Andrew (8/5): Would stay again - Staff very friendly and helpful.
Breakfast was good 🙂
- Jun (10/5): - Don't miss this historic cottage. Excellent 👍 food, outstanding hospitality, inexpensive bills and beautiful suroundings. Will be back!!
- Sarah (10/5): Excellent B&B - Had a wonderful one night last minute stay with my 3 young children. The owner was lovely, very helpful and accommodating. The room was perfect. Parking was easy and the food at the pub delicious. Breakfast included was also lovely. We will definitely be returning!
- Verified traveler (4/5): Hotel with good potential, but needs a plumber! - The location and general feel of the pub/hotel was nice; great part of the world. I liked the room in general, obviously some work has been done on decorating and making it clean and welcoming. The bathroom was small, but clean, although probably needs an update as was old- shower was a bit trickly/difficult to get going, for example.
Unfortunately the main problem was the plumbing; it sounded like Niagara falls was running through the wall next to our bathroom throughout the night. More likely someone had left a tap on next door or downstairs, but we couldn't fix it, and as it is a small establishment there was no obvious way to get it fixed at midnight.
The bed was also far too soft- although appreciate this is more of a personal choice.
The general result was a very interrupted/uncomfortable night's sleep.
It's a shame as the staff were lovely, and with a few small upgrades/changes to the plumbing this would be a great place to stay.
I hate to be that guy on the review that picks details, but generally a bad nights sleep for me so can't review too highly based on personal experience.
- Emily (2/5): - Despite being only one of two groups dining that night we had to chase up our food after waiting an hour. The bar closed at 9.30 due to lack of custom but I still had to get out of bed twice in the small hours of the morning to ask the night staff to turn the music off so we could sleep. The first time they apologised but continued, the second time they flat out ignored me, at 2.45am. Overpriced for the quality of the room and the service was terrible.
- Denise (6/5): - The pub itself is really old and dated, but thats fine. Waited ages for dinner in the pub (over an hour) and eventually had to go and ask the staff to check where it was as the kids were starving after a long day and others who had ordered after us were served food 20 minutes or more before us. The room was large however the walls were thin and we were awoken at 12pm by noise from the pub downstairs. It finaly died down at 1am after we could hear everyone say goodby 50 times. The bathroom was a shambles, a macerator toilet that was so loud you couldn't flush it at night and a shower that took over 10 mins to warm up and then literally dribbled out, if you have long hair you'll be in there for an hour trying to rinse it! We were asked to order breakfast the night before which was fine, so we got ourselves ready for 8:30am as we had advised and went down to an empty locked up pub. A 45 minute wait later, the staff finally turned up and began to open up, we then had to wait for it to be cooked so by the time it arrived the kids were starving - again. Its unfortunate as the lady working behing the bar in the evening was lovely.
- Mia (4/5): - No hot water in the shower. Loud music played past 11pm. Bed was not comfortable. Breakfast definitely wasn’t worth over 30 min wait.
- Ridhi (4/5): - The staff were great and friendly but didn’t get the room I chose and hot water wasn’t working at the shower
- Barrie (6/5): - It’s ok if you are on a budget, location was good, room was a lot smaller than the picture I had to walk sideways to get to the bathroom. Could do with some TLC the paintwork is tired and shower quite small. As for cleaning, webs on the ceiling and dust over the room lamps. When the cook came in you could hear the start up of the fans early in the morning.
First morning breakfast was late should of been 8-10 but opened at 0820. One of the breakfast staff was shouted at by the cook a few times and she kept getting orders wrong. Second morning a lot more organised.
Overall as I said if your on a budget then it’s ok, one thing very positive is the food.
- Nicu Catalin (6/5): - A bit run down property off an highway. Vrey expensive for what it is. Booked it as there was noting else available
- Gareth (4/5): Poor stay in a tired scruffy hotel - Very scruffy room with damp patch on the ceiling, cobwebs all over the walls, and mould and limescale in the bathroom. Creaky bed. Feeble thin window blind that barely blocked out any light, also a big gap under the door that let in light from the corridor.
Breakfast service was very slow and the food was poor.
Nice fresh new towels and the staff were friendly at least!
Would not recommend this hotel.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The accommodation was vlean and modern even though the pub itself is probably over 100 years old.
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and I would happily recommend Thd Red Lion as a base to explore south Dorset.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Lovely place, excellent food, nice staff.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great location close to Durdle Door and the room itself was kept well and clean. Highlight was amazing breakfast and proximity to the pub and open spaces. Straightforward check-in procedure that was very quick and enabled us to enjoy our trip.
- Peter (6/5): - Very good bar food. Ideal location for Lulworth cove, Bovingdon Tank museum. Room could be modernise but not expensive.
- Lyndon (10/5): - Excellent position for visiting Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove and on main road to Weymouth. Plenty of carparking space and outdoor seating. Room was very spacious and reception by staff was excellent with Covid 19 regulations strictly followed.
- Sophie (10/5): - Amazing, friendly staff. Booked last minute and everything was ready for us. The breakfast included was delicious and everything was clean and sanitised.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very good location and nice area close to local beaches
- Penny (10/5): The Red Lion is a very good place to stay. - Our room was well decorated and clean. Plenty of tea, coffee snd biscuits. Staff were friendly and helpful. Food was good and plentiful. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
- Teresa (10/5): Exceeded expectations - Jolene was very accommodating, nothing was too much trouble. Food was superb. Room was great, it had a really deep bath, very clean, plenty of parking spaces. I would definitely recommend this hotel.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Stayed for one night, staff were lovely and friendly, room was perfect and breakfast was great!
- susan (10/5): Great stay in a lovely old traditional pub. - The Red Lion is conveniently situated to explore Dorset and the staff, room and cleanliness were excellent. Would stay here again without a second thought.
- Greville (8/5): - Lovrly place to stay . The lady who did the breakfast and room was very nice.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Friendly staff, good choice of beer, great food (both Evening meal and breakfast) and comfortable room.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The property was a period property with a lot of interesting features
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Room was too small. No facility for charging toothbrush or shaver. Clothes from previous occupant still in wardrobe. We stayed two nights but the room was not cleaned during that time.
- Antony (8/5): - A roadside Public House with accommodation. Lots of parking. Food good, Host very pleasant and efficient.
- Alan (2/5): Don’t bother - We stayed 1 night, then left, accommodation was so bad.
- Wendy (10/5): Brilliant stay - This pub is brilliant - we arrived after 2 hard days walking on costal path ( red lion is right on the bus route from lullworth)
The room was bright clean and beds extremely comfortable
Supper was equally as good great mussels, lamb shank, squid and lovely cake to Finnish
Breakfast of same great standard
Most importantly staff were really friendly and helpful - they also have a really attractive campsite
Just excellent - thanks so much
- Gwenllian (8/5): - Just what we needed. Breakfast good
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great place but the staff are the best, never have we received such a warm and happy welcoming. The food was very good too, especially the enormous cooked breakfast
- Jeremy (10/5): Just right for us! - Stayed for two nights with my 6 year old son. Very family friendly atmosphere, really friendly and accommodating staff, comfortable rooms finished to a high standard and lovely location! We very much enjoyed our stay and will be back again! Thank you
J&H
- Androulla (8/5): Traditional village pub - The hotel was lovely and traditional. The food and service was great. Room a little small but very comfortable. The shower door was broken but for an overnight stay it wasn't a real problem.
Very easy to get to Lulworth Cove and local attractions. Would stay there again.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Pleasant stay at the Red Lion, lovely clean and comfortable room and good breakfast
- Andrew (10/5): - Room was clean and airy, thoughtfully decorated and laid out. The quality of the food was excellent and the staff were friendly and helpful. Perfect for a weekend getaway or a base for exploring Dorset.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Nice place. Delicious food. I recommend this place to relax
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Stayed for one night it was nice and clean and me and my fiance had a good sleep as it was very quiet and peaceful. Very close to Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove, Lulworth Castle and Monkey World so was very pleased.
Morning staff very friendly and helpful.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Place was very comfortable and clean with very friendly and helpful staff
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The pub food and service from all the staff was extremely good... I had a faultless and delicious evening meal. The best thing about the room was the bed which was very comfortable, and it was all very clean with nice bed linen and towels. But... need to sort out noisy plumbing, leaking shower, broken window and there was no plug near a surface for boiling the kettle :(
- Phillip (10/5): - Wonderful
- Paul (10/5): Great pub - Good pub, nice rooms. Good beer.
- Timothy (8/5): A few days in Dorset - Good country inn with very friendly owner and staff. Change of room due to plumbing issue (not really the owners fault rather age of building). Great service, attentive and very helpful. Location is great for exploring the area between Poole and Weymouth.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Amazing staff. Happy and friendly. Enjoyed a few drinks with some locals. Breakfast was wonderful nothing was to much trouble. We would 100% stay again
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Very close to local beauty spots like Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove. Activities every night: Music, Pub Quiz, Meat Raffle and really friendly, helpful staff. Nothing was too much trouble.
