Guest Reviews
- Peter (10/5): - Stayed for one night as a couple. Excellent location and room facilities; it’s right next to the National Park, making for a convenient return to the hotel before jumping into the onsen in the evening as you await a decadent dinner. Thoroughly impressed with dinner consisting of local fish, pickles, rice and beef showing off Tochigi’s local produce
Would stay again
- Paul (10/5): - To us this was an authentic Japanese experience, sleeping on the floor, private onsen, beautiful location and fantastic food. It's also in a perfect location in Nikko. It's our second stay an we love it.
- Jochen (10/5): Nikko - 2 Übernachtungen 6 Personen - 2 Zimmer - Sehr gutes Essen.
- Lisa (10/5): - Wonderful stay, relaxing facilities and the in room private onsen and balcony was amazing. Will stay again!
- Scott (10/5): - This is a wonderful property situated along the banks of the Otani River in Nikko. It’s a short ride from either of the two train stations in Nikko, and right across the road from the major cultural attractions of the city.
I selected one of their premium rooms that included a private rotenburo tub that is on the “balcony” that overlooks the flowing river. It was well worth the investment! The room was hugely spacious, well appointed and clean.
The staff was welcoming and extremely gracious from start to finish. The meals (breakfast and dinner are inclusive with the “half board” booking) were outstanding, using seasonal ingredients and renown locally produced items. They are prepared and presented in the classic Japanese style.
The location is incredibly convenient. I was able to walk over to the attractions, spend as much time there without rushing, and come back to the room to rest and refresh. The main road of the city is also an easy walk, and is lined with many quaint shops and restaurants.
The property is friendly for non-Japanese speakers, and who would like to respectfully experience a the charm and tradition of staying at a Japanese “inn”.
- François (10/5): - Superb !
- Marc (10/5): - I loved our huge room with private balcony onsen and the Japanese design of the room. Very friendly staff. Breakfast and dinner were really good and for us more than sufficient in quantity. They have a rotating set of 3 different dinners, so day 4 = day 1, but for us that was fine. Bed was a bit on the hard side but I got used to it.
- Paul (10/5): - Superior Room: lovely big space, with western style beds and traditional tatami mat lounge area that can be sectioned off by sliding panels. Aircon a little bit iffy, but mostly worked with a bit of fiddling about, supplemented by opening windows a bit. Quiet, even with windows open – just the soothing sound of the river. Lovely bathroom with twin wash basins, and private shower and lovely hot onsen bath on a private balcony. Large key locked safe in room. Comfy beds with two pillows available for each. Elaborate Japanese style dinner and breakfast.
Staff were very helpful with some English language skills.
Great location close to temples and shrines, and also near a bus stop that goes to Kegon falls and nearby ropeway. Also is only a short distance from the Shinkyo Bridge and the northwest end of town.
Coffee machine instructions only in Japanese, and Google Translate of them not entirely helpful – had to look up instructions in English on the interweb and YouTube.
Only small criticism: no power outlets by beds to charge your phone.
- JENA (10/5): - Amazing Ryokan. Great location. Bridge and shrines are walkable, but there are some hills to reach the shrines. Easy access to bus stop to take you to the falls.
The public bath was nice and clean. Staff were very nice and helpful. The food was delicious from breakfast to the dinner. We were happy with the variety and everything was VERY fresh and featured local foods such as the Tochigi beef. The only suggestion is more explanation of what we were eating. It was a very memorable experience and we would highly recommend.
- Wang (10/5): - 非常好
- Polina (8/5): - We wanted one night in a ryokan with traditional food where our dietary preferences would be accommodated and this hotel confirmed they could do that. I wish we had some more explanations around each meal and I wish the food came slower as it all felt quite rushed at dinner and we were randomly guessing what sauces went with what parts of the meal and how long to cook things for. The private onsen on our terrace was fantastic along with the beautiful view of the river but I struggled to sleep with the pillow provided on the western style bed.
- Rosanne (10/5): - It was our first stay in a ryokan & staff was very helpful to make sure we knew what was offered & how to use services.
- John (10/5): - Wonderful, peaceful stay! The private onsen room was everything we hoped for and more. Everything was very clean and tidy. The staff was wonderful and the food was delicious. Having a view of the river was sublime, and it was walkable to the major sites in Nikko! Lovely in every way!
- Edith (10/5): - Had a really relaxing stay here - the staff were friendly, the facility was clean, and I loved the traditional feel of this place. I would definitely stay here again!
- Jessie (8/5): - Comfortable stay. Japanese dinner and breakfast were an experience. Easy walk or bus into Nikko.
- Mohamed (10/5): - Amazing traditional Japanese hotel. Staff was very nice and friendly. Dining experience was amazing with traditional Japanese food! Onsen was very relaxing. Highly recommend!
- Hsa Blut Paw (10/5): - Excellent service from staff
- Alfredo (8/5): - I arrived to the area with a rental car, and they have an attendant who will come by and guide you to check in and help with luggage as they'll move your car and keep the keys afterwards. Check in was easy, with a minor mixup as they brought me to another room confusing me with another foreigner who would be checking in same day but corrected it quickly. Booked with a half board, and both dinner and breakfast were delicious for both days with nicely presented locally sourced ingredients. Thankfully meals did vary each day, and were still great for the rate I booked. Was located directly in front of the Nikko national park and temples which was great and convenient to reach. The public onsen was pretty nice, but you have to bring the towels from your own room, and it did provide basic grooming amenities. Only complaint was the outdoor bath was not nearly as hot as the one inside which I suppose is excusable given the cold temperature outside. Room was classic Ryokan style with tatami mats. Tv was old, and only offered the local television channels with no option for other streaming services, unless you brought a laptop with HDMI. Otherwise a great stay if you want to see the local Nikko area. Right across from the river so you can hear it well and it's amazing with a great view of the stars in most rooms I think.
(8/5): - good
- Nathan (10/5): - Very good hotel with great cp
- Elizabeth (10/5): - Charming ryokan. Onsen on top floor has separate bathing for men and women, lovely way to begin and end the day. The rooms come with half board, so a very special dinner and breakfast filled with Japanese delicacies. Location is convenient, it’s about a 15 minute walk from the tobu Nikko station but you can take the number 1 bus that leaves you a block or so away. Quite convenient to the attractions. Lovely mountainous view with brook from the window.
- Daniela (10/5): - We really enjoyed our stay in this hotel. The room and facilities are a bit tired but the views, service and onsen were flawless. Dinner and breakfast were very generous and we enjoyed them, though if you’re not into traditional Japanese flavours, you might struggle.
- Khanh (10/5): - The staff and service were excellent, the rooms were spacious and lovely, we loved our private balcony bath, and dinner and breakfast were fantastic. Highly recommend staying here.
- Kevin (8/5): - Hotel experience was awesome. Located near the world heritage site and you can walk through them in a loop in less than 3 hours. Hotel provides a shuttle from the JR station (need to reserve in advance). We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel (excellent food). They take you to your individual dining room and served the set meals that way. Didn't like how checkout was at 10am. Wish it was at 11am and it would've made the logistic much easier
- Bruce (10/5): - Very nice but some rigid policies
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Traditional ryokan with half board - stayed on tatami mats so had a trully traditional
Experience. Staff very friendly and well
Located for tourist sights
- Erin (10/5): - Stunning ryokan. We stayed for one night, and had kaiseki traditional meals for dinner and for breakfast, which we loved! The view from the windows of the nearby river and mountains is absolutely breathtaking. Sleeping on a futon on the floor took some getting used to, but it's part of the Ryokan experience! We also enjoyed the private hot spring bath in our room. Very close walk to the start of Tosho-gu shrine, which you definitely can't miss.
- Sam (10/5): - Coming back another visit
- Fabrizio (10/5): - Just amazing staying in full japanese style Ryokan. Japanese Dinner and Breakfast included.
Small private onsen in the room. Public onsen in hotel available. Just Perfect!!!
- Kendall (10/5): - This property was lovely. We stayed in two balcony rooms with private balcony baths and it was brilliant to sit in the bath and watch the river go by. The food (we had dinner and breakfast) was great, particularly the dinner.
All the hotel staff were attentive and polite, helping us with anything we needed. Close walk to the nearby shrine and temple complex.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Perfect Ryokan Stay - Booked a private onsen for 2-nights and it was worth every penny. One of the main reasons I booked this hotel was because it was located right next to the river. My husband and I enjoyed the private onsen. It was the perfect temperature for the both of us. The staff was extremely accommodating and friendly. The location was great. It was minutes away from the famous bridge and the bus stop was less than a minute away from the hotel. The room was big, and I was super comfortable with their futons. Breakfast and dinner is traditional Japanese-style so it may not be feasible to most people, but I enjoyed every bite!
- james (10/5): Excellent Food and Views! - The staff are incredibly nice and their cooking is EXCELLENT! You have to enjoy their breakfast and dinners!!
- Scott (8/5): Lovely experience - Stayed at this ryokan for 2 nights with the half board both days. The property is definitely feeling its age, but it certainly does not lack any charm. The room was plenty spacious and was provided with everything needed for a comfortable stay. The open air onsen that faces the river was so serene and peaceful, it was truly a special experience. The service level is outstanding and they take every effort to make guests feel valued and special. The food was artfully prepared and delicious. The hotel is perfectly located close to the amazing temples and shrines, as well as a short walk from the town. I recommend this hotel for anyone wanting a real ryokan experience.
- Yen Hua (10/5): Good hotel and friendly english speaking staff - Very friendly staff and can speak english with the staff as well. The onsen is good as well. The dinner and breakfast is great.
- Akiko (10/5): - 。
- Micah (10/5): - It was awesome.
- Gary (10/5): Excellent stay. - We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we'll not hesitate to book again. The staff were helpful and very welcoming. The hotel is very well located and we had a magnificent view from our bedroom of the mountain stream and forest.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The location was very good - across the street from the shrines. Also, close to the bus stop if you want to take a bus to the waterfall/lake. The room had a beautiful river and hill view, but our room smelled a bit weird because of the enclosed private onsen. The dinner and breakfast were awesome!
- VANDER (10/5): - Adoramos a nossa estadia, tudo perfeito!
- Emi (8/5): - They can pick you up or drop you off at train station if you make reservations. There are English speaker staff. Onsen was pretty good.
- Sandra (10/5): Great stay - Had a lovely stay here, close to all the shrines. Lovely spot next to the river.
Service was great, room was good, dinner and breakfast was very tasty and we loved the private dining room.
Very friendly, helpful team.
- Qiang (8/5): - I like the service and the guest room 411. The only improvement I would suggest is to improve the condition and cleanliness of the shower towel. Almost all of towel has mold smell.
- Verified traveler (8/5):
- Michael (10/5): A perfect stay in Nikko - Wonderful hotel, staff and location. We felt so welcome and cared for, everyone was so friendly! The location was perfect, all of the highlights were within walking distance. We didn't have a car and it was never an issue. The food was exquisite, and the onsen next to the river was amazing. Highly recommend!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - A wonderful ryokan experience, including a sumptuous local dinner and breakfast, and the room was beautiful, with a view of the river and mountains.
- Wong (4/5): - The services are not good. Not up to general standard in Japan.
We won’t consider this onsen hotel again.
The hotel facilities and room decoration are quite old. Not similar as per photo attached
- Benjamin (10/5): One of the best hotel experiences of my life. - This is probably the best hotel in Nikko and one of the best hotels in Japan... The rooms and the service and the food and just everything are absolutely perfect and the location is amazing and the views of the river are incredible. Jaescon is an incredible employee who always makes for a wonderful experience. we have stated this hotel twice this year and are already planning our trip for 2020!
- Saimir (10/5): One of the best hot springs - Amazing room and amazing staff I will definitely come back when I visit nikko
- Fuk Ming (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): -
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Excellent service!! Breakfast and dinner also excellent.
- Aimee (10/5): - Great ryokan hospitality, friendly staff (including English speakers), beautiful views of the river and hillside from our room (and all rooms, I believe), and a pleasant indoor/outdoor onsen...in short, everything we could have wanted from our stay in Nikko. The meals were elegant, seasonal, authentic Japanese foods. We would definitely stay here again if we come back to Nikko. It's easy to walk to the major local sights.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Everything was great (location, food, staff, view from room, etc.). However, our room smelled a little (like mold?), so that bothered me.
- Verified traveler (8/5): -
- Verified traveler (2/5): - The worst price to value ratio ever! We have stayed at several ryokans in the past, so are no strangers to the concept or pricing. Given the price we paid, we were totally taken aback at the rundown condition of this hotel. It should be rated 2 stars.
It is located on a busy street near the world heritage site, with the river on the back side. The exterior is unattractive and in dire need of a paint job. The lobby is equally depressing, with a large kitchy gift shop and a tiny check-in desk. The entire property is severely dated and in need of a major renovation. Our room had water stains on the walls. There wasn’t a proper shower, just a plastic hand held in the middle of a room where the tub was (which was not a hot spring tub).
We love Japanese food and trying new things, but both the breakfast and dinner were horrible.
On the positive side, it was nice hearing the rushing river from our window, and they picked us up at the train station on time as arranged.
However, the overall experience was so bad that we wanted to cancel our second night with a refund, and after several back-and-forth’s with the manager he graciously allowed this.
- Claudio (6/5): Beautiful location, overall expensive - the price wa extremely high (we paid the same as for 3 days in Kyoto)
Yes, we selected the room with private tab on the balcony, and breakfast and dinner were included.
We were not impressed with the food, the quantity was ok, but the quality was very simple.
Good food, but nothing compared with some of the great culinary experiences we had during our holiday in Japan.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The Onsen was located directly next to the river which made for a great view from the open air bath in our room.
- Carl (4/5): - I instructed the staff that I had a peanut allergy and had to avoid eating some items. Even after being assured that nothing in my breakfast had peanuts I found something which gave me a strong reaction. It’s a good thing I was alert and spit it out before it developed into a serious issue. The problematic item might have been a different kind of bean than a peanut so I told them that whatever it is they should avoid it for guests with peanut allergies because it would have been very bad for someone with a serious allergy.
The condition of the hotel was a bit dated and shabby. Many fixtures have spots, rust, dust and corrosion. The bath was nice.
The cuisine is traditional Japanese which was very challenging to eat. The staff were overly anxious about us and hovered and pressured us during the meal because they were worried we wouldn’t use the hot coals soon enough.
If you like hiking the National Park is very close by. But it was late and we didn’t go. The road is very narrow and has a lot of traffic, making jaunts from the hotel a bit hazardous.
- Arnaud (8/5): - Ideally situated a few mn from the entrance to the World Heritage site, and overlooking the river. The hotel is charming, excellent staff and food, a great Ryokan like experience !
- Panchit (6/5): Nice hotel - Close to world heritage. Very convenient. Good service but it’d be better to have more staffs who can speak English
- Tim (10/5): Traditional ryokan with excellent food/ location - First time to stay in a traditional ryokan after visiting Japan scores of times on business. This hotel has wonderful setting and staff. Dinner and breakfast were traditional Japanese food and excellent. Coffee available in lobby. My wife enjoyed the roof top onsen with gorgeous view of river and mountain[ which our room #407} also had.
- Meursault (6/5): Overpriced - Over priced for the service and product we got. We got the half board. Dinner was small and uninspiring. Breakfast was a little better. Paid for kids but they didn't even get their own food or bedding/mattress.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Great experience. Highly recommended. Food is amazing. Love it there.
- Verified traveler (10/5): Loved it!!! - This ryokan was incredible! The food was delicious and beautifully presented. The service was impeccable and I loved the public bath...so serene and relaxing! Would definitely recommend this ryokan to anyone who wants a real Japanese experience.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Pricey for what it is - Pricey for what it is (building, standing, food) if you sign up for dinner and breakfast at the hotel. I would recommend eating out. The room is adequate.
- Tomi (10/5): Luxurious ryokan close to all the sites - My partner and I booked a private bath room here for 2 nights. The room was very spacious and clean, and we had the best nights sleep here of our whole holiday! The ryokan is literally across the road from the main temples in Nikko and a short walk to the main street in town.
The breakfasts and dinners were a real highlight. The food was absolutely delicious, and gives you a real taste of Japan as it's all traditional.
The staff were all very helpful and more than happy to help with anything and everything.
If you don't book a room with a private bath there are public baths upstairs for all guests to enjoy.
- Ivy (10/5): great place to stay in Nikko - the location is very near the most famous temples in Nikko. the dinner and breakfast is super awesome! and the room is really nice, you can see the beautiful river. everything is so good!
- Sam (8/5): Great Ryokan - Fantastic experience. Food was excellent, some of the best we are in Japan. Located very close the all of the main temples.
- TB (10/5): Plesant stay - Hotel has everything I want ;wonderful location, cleanliness, onsen, facilities, hospitality staffs, nice food. I really recommend this stay at Nikko
- Verified traveler (10/5): Nice Superior Room! - Had a great time at this hotel. It is walking distance to the Shrine and has a nice view of the river. I especially liked the Superior room with open air bathtub overlooking the river. The room was huge and very modern. Other family members stayed in the more normal rooms and said their bathrooms were not updated and their rooms were not as nice. The meals were downstairs and we had a private room for the 7 of us. Both breakfast and dinner were large and very good.
Overall, I would stay here again. If you can afford it, book the superior room. I think it was worth it.
