Guest Reviews
- William (1/5): I didn’t stay there - It was alright They didn’t let me stay in the hotel and I had to book another
- Lisa (9/5): Great value, great staff, clean hotel - This hotel is great value for money, the staff are so friendly and helpful and everywhere is clean and tidy. What more could you ask for the price? Seeing bad reviews on booking.com for decent budget hotels is so bad when you're paying such cheap rates!! I recommend this hotel to so many people, so hope my review helps those looking for a little getaway to Torquay
- Shani (6/5): Staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Parking was also easy. - It was close to the pubs and babbacombe front It was very dated. And the room was quite shabby, needs decorating and upgrading.
- Elaine (8/5): Very good stay. Would definitely go back. - Didn't have breakfast but the location was great .
- Davies (8/5): -
- Aaron (3/5): -
- Michael (10/5): - Staff very helpful and polite
- John (3/5): would not stay again - breakfast ok room very drab and dated , unable to shut or lock bathroom door , bed uncomfortable
- Jose (6/5): - Uitgebreid ontbijtbuffet Het is oud en enigszins vervallen
- Danil (10/5): - The hotel is located next to a park in a quiet and beautiful place. Also I had a single room, it was spacious enough.
- Sarah (5/5): Lovely hotel needs updating tho - Was in a good location was clean in the reception dining but the rooms need updating
Was empty when we come hardly any guests Rooms need updating was very cold no heating had to get a electric radiator from reception
- Charles (3/5): -
- brian (3/5): - Room next to us had tv on all night.

- Michelle (10/5): - Everything No phone signal
- Andrew (10/5): - Great location in babbacundaaaa, most staff was brill an very helpful anything we needed they sorted it for us definitely recommend and stay again 👍🏻 Haven't to come home 🤣
- Robert (1/5): We've been coming for over a year now for the odd weekend break. And it's become extremely poor. - It was average not great you could tell it had been under the warmers for to long. The fruit juice was watered down and the bread wasn't very fresh. The middle aged man on the reception desk has no 'front of house' skills at all I found him grumpy and borderline rude. Although the young lady was extremely friendly and pleasant.
- Caroline (5/5): - Location Reception staff. No help with bags. Very off hand. Only one young boy offered help with luggage on way out.
Left standing ringing back door bell for 10 minutes. Had to walk around and go through front of hotel to open back door myself to disabled friend. Room should of been on level floor but allocated one down steep flight of stairs. It was clean in room but very dated and basic.
- Isabel (8/5): Short stay away - Location, price Mattress was very hard.
- Janet (10/5): -
- Cook (8/5): -
- David (8/5): Recetion very un helpfull and rude. - Stay for 2 of our emplyees was fine Staff turned away our employees for not having photo ID. this had been booked through booking.com and we have never been asked for this before.
we where told it was company policy. we should have been made aware of this when booking. our lads had traveled from London and didnt arrive till 8 PM. After i finally managed to speak to reception, they where allowed back. if i hadnt interveined they would have been left without accomadation that had already been paid for. The guy on reception said he had spoken with the manager to allow the stay. He had allready told this to one of our lads while at the reception and said they couldnt do anything about it. Absolute farce.
- leanne (4/5): Was good location for stay of one night. Bed to put out heads down for the night - Lady at reception was lovely. So kind and very very cheerful But smelly damp
- chris (9/5): - Great location, nice room, staff welcoming Nothing
- chris (9/5): - Nice welcome, great location and comfy room Nothing
- 894sik (8/5): Lovely staff - Had a great time in babacombe. This hotel is a little tired but for me the staff are great. Jade is especially very very helpful, nothing is too much for this lady, she is an absolute asset to this hotel. The var is reasonably priced and the room are adequate for a short break away from the mad world we all live in. Give it a go
- Andrew (3/5): very poor - the out side it was cold my room was like sleeping in a fridge the breakfast is not worth twelve pound the bar was hardly open on saturday they closed it at ten o’clock
- asim (4/5): Avoid if you can afford to... - The best thing is location one minute walk from the beach and cheapest in the city on booking .com however Rooms are basically toilet size and get very hot a fan was provided though but not enough to keep you comfortable. Carpets are filthy and the whole place stank wouldn't recommend unless bugie is on budget.
- jenny (3/5): -
- samantha (10/5): -
- Kerry (8/5): Last minutes short break. - The staff are very friendly and helpful. The room was clean. We found the room basic and very small but perfect for 2 nights.
You get what you pay for. We had read the reviews and I don’t think some are correct. It’s a nice clean hotel. I would book again to return. Maybe a new mattress on the bed. Could feel the springs.
- Robert (6/5): Okay for the money would consider a second try different room - Parking was easy clean and friendly staff. Room was too warm with no heating on and had to report no hot water. When I reported it they did fix the problem though next day.fan in bathroom a bit noisy, kept losing WiFi also and my network didn’t work there.
For the money paid not bad but hopefully next time slightly better experience.
- Jeswin (8/5): - Room and facilities ,Staff Service Room was a bit stinky as lack of ventilation . But staff provided some room freshner to tackle that .
- Eloise (7/5): -
- Sergio (10/5): -
- Stephen (9/5): Very nice day that we had just for one night visiting to watch a football match room was really nice - Breakfast was excellent great choice for cooked breakfast and generous with the servings and fresh. Would’ve liked to have seen some croissants and pastries as well. My boy likes them at breakfast. Nothing I didn’t like it was all good.
- Lee (3/5): Cheap, and you can see why - The location
Great breakfast No parking
The whole place needs a revamp!
The mattress was knackered
- Vitor Manuel (6/5): Good and peaceful - Good enough for a night or two at a reasonable cost Could have been more recommending if the pack would include breakfast
- Raheela (1/5): - Nothing , staff was rude . Place was very dirty and beds were very uncomfortable. It’s Horrible experience. Everything staff , rooms were so dirty and smelly
- Zoe (8/5): -
- Stephen (3/5): Freezing no sleep - It was freezing cold could not sleep ot was that cold How cold it was
- Connor (10/5): -
- Nicola (5/5): Poor nights sleep but otherwise better than expected. - The entertainment was good. The pillows, the bed and the very noisy bedroom
- Marianna (10/5): Love it. - Stayed in the hotel few times. Price is good, close to the sea, live music, a lot space, bar and drinks, very friendly staff.
Seating inside and outside.
Very good overall. I don't really see anything what could be better. It meets all the basics what needs to be so nothing really.
- marcia (9/5): Excellent value for money - Welcoming staff upon arrival 😊 Free wifi and tv plus extra blankets!
- Ionut-Cezar (8/5): Okay - Stage entertainment The breakfast should be included in the price considering the room rate, the room can do with a painting, a bit dusty, very noisy.
- Shirley (8/5): Always a warm welcome and some of the staff know us by name . - Location great ,10 minutes walk to son's house .Have stayed several times in the past 3 years. Looked after well. Always stay bed & breakfast. I am gluten and dairy free and am well catered for . Cleanliness of rooms especially bathroom and maybe access to a couple more power sockets in bedroom .
- Ian (3/5): -
- Jason (4/5): Dissapointing - Close to the beach and local shops Very dated room, very stuffy as there was only one window, view was lousy, bathroom was the best bit very clean and shower hot, no parking on hotel property only on main road, it was a roulette to see if you could park near the hotel, not good as my wife has knee problem.
- Lisa (7/5): -
- Andrew (4/5): -
- Tomas (8/5): No expectations- no disappointments. - Super location. No hooks or bars for wet towels, only two sockets on the wall - one for TV, another for kettle. Needed something to unplug to charge the gadgets. TV on table, kettle with tray and cups on table as well.
- Carol (7/5): Babbacombe location was good, hotel a bit big and confusing finding rooms. - Good location.
Pleasant outdoor space with resident cat. The fire doors made finding our rooms difficult, and each others.
Noisy nearby occupants on Saturday night.
Outside motor noise until the early hours on Sunday night.
- Daniel (6/5): N/a - There was live music every night, which was good Beds were uncomfortable
- David (10/5): - The food and drink O
- Norman (9/5): - Good value for money
- Samantha (6/5): -
- Julie (10/5): -
- dumitrel (5/5): -
- kersten (2/5): Horrendous hotel and I pity anyone that books this hotel - Nothing at all Dirty and tired hotel. Didn’t appear that the hotel was cleaned during my 4 night stop or that it had been decorated in the last 30 years
- Steve (8/5): -
- Joshua (7/5): Stay was fine peaceful - Location was ok bar and entertainment was good I stayed in 125 the room could of had bit more cleaniness i had dusty curtains i was sneezing and there was mould on curtains
- Tracey (9/5): Really nice, enjoyed it very much, apart from the bar person. He wasn't very friendly at all. Grumpy - The location was great, the food was not great, The evening meal wasn't very good also the bar person was very unfriendly
- Paul (10/5): Nice place , nice people - Thank you Vibe
- Janet (10/5): Very good - We just love it down there The location and the staff are lovely
- Marie (5/5): Got stuck in 2 person lift for 15 mins when arrived with bags. Room our window view was a concrete wall and fire steps , - The staff The lounge and dining room and food is really nice
- James (8/5): -
- Lisa (10/5): -
- Ashley (5/5): Passable - Basic accommodation in a very dated setting. Unpleasant smell throughout the communal areas. Lift out of order. Navigating the hotel with a newborn in a push chair was extremely difficult due to narrow passage ways and steep stairs.
- Cristina (8/5): Everything was perfect for my needs - Great location and very peaceful. Comfortable room for my needs. Shower handle a bit old fashioned, even though worked well
- Malgorzata (6/5): A good location and value for money but cleanliness is neglected - Location Old fashion, bit tired
- Stefania (8/5): -
- Sonia (10/5): Always go back - Love the staff especially the night shift receptionist he was very helpful and polite
- Rebecca (9/5): Recommend - Room was much bigger than previous and had a BATH. I was so upset I didn't have my bath salts on me.
Clean and friendly staff as usual. I've tried a few Torquay budget hotels but this one is my favourite.
Babbacombe is nice and the other guests seemed to enjoy themselves. Squeaky floorboards when I sneak down in the night for a cigarette outside!
- MacClinton (3/5): - Hotel Cancelled booking, no reasons but kept getting reminders to check in and now a survey !!!!!!!!!
- renee (10/5): -

- Colette (10/5): -
- Michelle (1/5): -
- Cameron (7/5): 4/5 star - ⭐ 4/5
Friendly staff and a great location in quiet Babbacombe make the Trecarn a solid budget stay. The rooms are clean and perfectly fine for a short break—just expect décor with “character” and Wi-Fi that occasionally forgets it’s Wi-Fi. Parking is on the street, but overall it’s good value and a comfy base for exploring Torquay. The décor is, well… retro. And not in the trendy, Instagrammable way. More in the “that carpet definitely remembers the 90s” kind of way. Guests frequently mention that the hotel could do with a refurbishment, especially in the bathrooms, which some found small and a little tired.
Wi-Fi can be patchy enough to make you reconsider sending that email—or perhaps embrace an impromptu digital detox. Walls are thin too, so you may get to know your neighbours more intimately than planned.
Parking isn’t the Trecarn’s strong suit either. There’s no dedicated car park, so street parking is the name of the game—occasionally several streets away. Consider it a free warm-up before check-in.
- Carter (6/5): -
- Nicholas (7/5): -
- Fi (5/5): - Friendly helpful staff A few issues with the standard/repair of the room, staff were helpful in offering a resolution
Bar not open .. general condition and repair of the whole building..very poor
Hotel due to close very shortly for the end of the season until March
- Richard (8/5): As described - Location Too hot in hotel
- Jackson (8/5): -
- 158stefaniec (2/5): Paid in advance, no entry- refused room for homeless man during yellow weather warning - We (Punk Against Poverty CIC) booked and paid for a room at the Britannia Trecarn Hotel to get a young homeless man off the streets for the night during a yellow weather warning. It was cold, wet, and unsafe for anyone to be outside, and a kind donor had given us £50 to help someone in need.
When he arrived, the hotel refused him entry because he didn’t have photo ID. Their own terms and conditions — buried way down the page — say guests “may be asked” for ID, not that it’s required. It’s not highlighted clearly anywhere during booking, and for a budget hotel, most people wouldn’t expect that to be a problem.
We immediately called the hotel, offered to email our own ID and take full responsibility, but they still refused to let him stay.
I completely understand that hotels have policies, but sometimes compassion and common sense should come first — especially in dangerous weather conditions. The situation could have been handled with empathy and flexibility, but instead, the hotel chose to send someone vulnerable back out into the cold.
We will not be booking with Britannia Hotels again.
- Carwyn (10/5): -
- orca*orca (7/5): Good value for money in a great location - Room was fine, location and value for money were excellent Mattress was a little uncomfortable
- Mike (7/5): - Location, staff and cleanliness.
Mattress covers 👍 The mattress wasn't very comfortable for me and only one pillow per person.
No doubt they would have provided another if I'd asked.
- Hawker (9/5): -
- Peter (9/5): - No Wi-Fi
- Billie-jo (10/5): -
- Slater (10/5): Lovely hotel near to the sea - Amazing friendly staff and well presented rooms Nothing could have been changed during our stay
- Green (1/5): Nightmare at the Trecarn hotel - Apart from the staff that were on shift the night we arrived Absolutely nothing about this hotel was nice. The day shift staff(apparently management) rude and no name badges
The room was freezing cold dusty and very dirty the bathroom had mould on the ceiling. Asked to be moved to a different room, a little warmer but when checking found everywhere was thick with dust, even down the back of a chair and aling the top of pictures, the beds were ripped underneath
The food was awful.
I would avoid this hotel at all cost.
