Guest Reviews
- Sarah (6/5): - Nice member of staff who gave me a free coffee! Rooms close together
- Mark (7/5): Functional and comfortable. - This hotel is functional if a little tired. The staff were very good and accommodating. Parking was easy and the restaurant provided a good service and quality of food for the money. The venue needs a bit of a spruce up and some redecoration but overall it provides a comfortable and peaceful place to stay if you are using it as a base.
- Michael (7/5): - Good breakfast, Pleasant garden to sit in-although, sadly the weather was inclement. Problem getting extra pillow.
- Jan (10/5): Lovely quiet location. - Quiet location. Could open windows, adjust temperature.

Court yard style of rooms

Easy walk into town centre Lighting in room - very bright spot lights in ceiling. Bed side lamps didn’t work very well.

- Tracy (9/5): Lovely chalet and easy parking - We loved the ‘chalet’ style rooms facing out to a little courtyard. A lovely outside area.
Also, had a kettle and a plentiful supply of teabags and milk sachets.
Easy parking. This was a deliberate choice for us for this reason.
Breakfast was decent. The staff were friendly. Genuinely, thought this was a lovely place to stay. The only thing we didn’t like was the coffee. Truly dreadful! That’s why I’m going 9/10.
- Jimmy (3/5): - Location
Clean
Good breakfast No hot water from tap.
Poor WiFi
Single woman placed in one of two rooms in stairwell above men’s toilets

- Robert (8/5): A good place to stay within walking distance of town centre and various places to eat. - Good sized room, comfortable bed, good lighting, Room was very hot at night even with windows open.
We didn't like the coffee/tea machine at breakfast - we prefer individual coffee pots or teapots.

- Matthew (7/5): Ok for one night. - Parking available. Individual rooms. Sweets a lovely touch. Breakfast staff lovely and the breakfast was nice. Was not the cleanest. Coffee/tea stain down the wall. The tap spun around, the bath mat was gunky.

In a great location
Plenty of parking
Love the courtyard are very pretty peaceful No staff at all
Everything is self serve which is great but not if you’re disabled or dyslexic
This was a problem
Calling the phone for assistance noone arrived
We asked other visitors for help
- Richard (7/5): Mixed - Good location The electric shower sounded like an excavator and the bedside lights didn’t work initially so we pulled the bed out to check it was plugged in and the skirting was filthy with dirt/dust. The lights then worked ok later in the evening so not sure what happened there. Was going to mention to staff on checking out but there wasn’t anyone on reception to tell.
- sib424 (4/5): Walls thin - Room 50 walls are very thin. All noises in next room are easily heard. Bathroom small and not the cleanest. Road works around the hotel make it difficult to find the entrance as there's no signage. Don't stay in this room.
- Andrew (8/5): Good, staff were friendly and helpful - Breakfast was disappointing Lack of choice, no pastries
- Tracey (9/5): - Everything. Best budget hotel room in a very long time. Lovely cosy homely room, with nice personal touches That I was only staying one night. Would have loved to have stayed longer to enjoy more of the hotel and surroundings.

- Fergus (8/5): Ferg - Location and customer service. Nothing comes to mind.
- David (8/5): - Old property charm in a quite area but close to the town and access to the A14
- Jeff Amor (7/5): - Clean, helpful staff, good food. Looking a bit of a tired building.
- V3266HRjaded (6/5): Ok, nice location. - Location good and central. Waiting staff helpful. Room clean enough but broken tap, tea stains on the wall, plug in heating, unfinished grout. Lovely cooked breakfast but lacking in GF options.
- Shanel (7/5): Friendly staff, accommodated late check-in, comfortable spacious room - Clean, comfortable and staff were great Bathroom decor could have been better
- LInda (7/5): Nice central location. Staff very friendly, but didn’t sort the problems. - Nice big room. Lovely surroundings. Easy access to town centre. Room hadn’t been cleaned properly. Stuff left in the bedside table. Razor left in bathroom. Toilet didn’t flush without removing the lid.
- Will (9/5): Highly recommended, will definitely use again when visiting family. - Fantastic room, everything you needed and plenty of space.
- Griffiths (9/5): - Very friendly staff Little bit hard to get to the restaurant being disabled.
- Cecilia (10/5): - Great hotel, good food!
- Mark (10/5): Very enjoyable overnight stopover - The rooms and grounds/gardens Electronic signing out at reception
- Jordan (10/5): Short - Very nice clean and good location and all so would definitely stay again
- Marcus (7/5): Great Friendly Hotel with staff to match - Staff were very friendly and helpful throughout my stay.
The breakfast was a buffet style on the 1st morning but them changed to served, great choice of continental breakfast and the cooked breakfast (Options available at a supplement - Eggs Benedict for example). Was in 1 of the garden room which was pleasant but had seen its days, although clean and tidy with everything you needed in it, it was looking a little tired.
Road works happening right outside 1 of the main gates to the hotel which meant car parking was difficult at times.
- Andyb13579 (10/5): Friendly, comfortable hotel. Food good. - Friendly and welcoming staff, food was very good for dinner and breakfast. Bedrooms need some improving, mainly in the bathroom. Bed very comfortable.
- alan (5/5): Very helpful and polite staff - Location Worn out interiors , lacking any maintenance
Mattress worn out
- Neil (6/5): Lovely place to stay - Amazing setting, lovely garden and the restaurant faces the patio. A short drive to town, plenty of restaurants. Staff were really great, welcoming and an easy transaction from the outset. Well, the room I was in had some issues, but I feel assured it was a one off and the staff were happy to report the issues. The TV didn't work, no remote present so I suspect they knew. The shower was also a challenge, one of the old electric machines with an internal pump, it had two heat settings - freezing or boiling.
If these issues were fixed, I would be giving 10/10 because the staff, the decor and the location were all fab.
Don't let this put you off, talking to others staying, mine was a one off and I'm sure they will now fix it.
- S (10/5): Nice hotel - Location is nice
Lovely building
Comfortable room The check is automatic and confusing
- Steve (9/5): -
- David (8/5): - Easy check in Road work around the hotel
- ross (9/5): Good priced clean hotel - Good sized rooms, nice and clean
- Mme Patricia Bardot (8/5): - Ambiance calme..Personnel aimable et serviable.Lit confortable.Bon petit déjeuner Salle de bzins pas très propre.Douche difficile à utiliser.Pas de tiroirs ou étagères pour ranger les vêtements.
- Gail (4/5): Good place for a quick stay not for longer. - Staff very polite, helpful and professional.
Short stay to visit family.
Location was very convenient to local town, shops and across the road from Tollgate pub where the food was good. The mattress was like concrete and so uncomfortable. The television did not work and the decor was tired.
- Serena (10/5): A great stay for a great price :) - It was lovely and the staff were very nice
- Jacqueline (8/5): Really enjoyed and will be back in a couple of weeks. - The staff were brilliant especially Michelle. She should be the boss, she sorts everything 😀 Our shower was too hot but it was ok as Michelle came straight away to fix it.
- Christine (8/5): -
- rosj487 (10/5): A Great Experience - Just returned from a 4 night stay with a U3A travel group party of 51 people. A very warm welcome, tea and coffee was much appreciated on arrival served by very friendly staff. The hotel and rooms were very clean and atmosphere was great. Complimentary drink with our meal on the first evening. The Priory was quiet although on a busy main road. Bury St Edmunds itself is well worth a visit with its lovely cathedral and adjacent Abbey Gardens, a vibrant market town. Well done Hannah and the team, nothing was too much trouble.
- Mo (8/5): Weekend trip with family - Lovely comfortable room, twin room beds are quite narrow though, but fine for us. Lovely powerful shower. Nice complimentary jar of sweets too.
Lovely food Lots of stairs a little difficult if you are elderly and not as able bodied as most.
- Stuart (9/5): -
- Joanne (7/5): Quick weekend break - Nice period building and garden space. Lovely straightforward walk to Bury. Sweets provided in the room Poor shower pressure, issues with TV - the signal was not stable and couldn’t get all the channels. As there wasn’t many guests, breakfast was made to order and not buffet but you had to have what they brought to you,for example you couldn’t order two sausages where as a buffet you could have more. Staff member said they didn’t make the rules and up to chef
- ROBERT (3/5): Disappointed - Location and parking Shower did not work and toilet was not clean
- foxton (5/5): -
- SELINA (8/5): -
- spooner (1/5): Would not recommend - Their was a little jar of sweets on the table So we was put in room 50 outside in a chalet type accommodation, to first look at the room it looked ok. However the room wasn't warm we put the heating on ad full as we can and we was still chilly. You only get a very thin duvet on the bed so it was a very long cold night. You are giving one pillow each with spare in the cupboard. We had to use two each as they where so thin also, I had to fold one of mine in half to try and get some hight which then made the pillow do hard and very uncomfortable. The curtains didn't hang correctly and sort of falling down the curtains was also not black out so out room was lit up all night we might as well just had the main light on all night. The sheet also had marks on it and. The shower sounded like a massive industrial hoover going it was so load and finally from the early hours of the morning you could here like boilers going or a water system sounded like are room was in a basement ( obviously it wasn't) so yer really don't recommend room 50! I did report all this to the receipt when we left this morning, and they just said thank you for letting them know🙈 so one very tied couple here who will certainly not be returning.

- Paul (9/5): Great value, comfortable hotel with friendly staff - A really good value hotel. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. My room was a garden room and was very comfortable, clean and spacious. It's a slight walk into town - maybe 20-25 mins - but very doable and just a straight line to the Abbey.
- oscarvm0104 (2/5): Do NOT stay in this hotel. - Do NOT stay in this hotel.
First off, the signage was REALLY poor for drivers passing by - I drove past it twice before noticing it, finally. Keep your eyes peeled for the invisible signs!
I stayed in a 'village' suite that sat separately to the main hotel building. The door had a slight gap when fully shut - a ventilation system in summer, maybe, but it was noisy and unnerving.
There was a LIVE wasp in my room when I entered, and there were a handful of mosquitos and flies that had been lingering too, which I had to deal with.
The cleaning standards of this hotel left a LOT to be desired, to say the VERY least. The bathroom grout was full of black mould and there was mould in every corner of the room. Outside the front door of my 'village' suite was DISGUSTING and FULL of cobwebs. I was repulsed.
Once I'd gathered the courage to brave the shower, the shower setting itself was incredibly powerful (even painful in areas) and I couldn't adjust it because the shower head was jammed.
The car park was neatly clad with a large abandoned skip containing jumbled and disordered junk and old tat. There was also a small abandoned-looking building in the car park, with MINGING windows and peeling black paint. It had old abandoned pieces of rotten wood on the roof, visible on the outside for customers passing by. This was presumably a cleaning cupboard of sorts.
Look away if you value cleanliness! Genuine daylight robbery.
- estelamaria1963 (2/5): Dirty and very tired room - Dirty and very tired room, curtains hanging off the rails, cobwebs on the bedframe, dirty bathroom floor which had not been swept or cleaned, with black mouldy mastic around the bath. Bugs on the window edges. Very disappointed and will not be staying here again.
- Jenny (8/5): - Still has its old charm
- Anne (7/5): - Location, staff Food. Breakfast was uninspiring compared tp other best westerns
- Larry (8/5): Visit in early February. 2026 using accessible room for disability. - Accessible room 40, good bteakfast Entrance on 1 way system caused by diversion from road works, reception very noisy with large party for overnight celebration, parking near room in evening was blocked by other guests parking inconsiderately.
- Cherie (8/5): Great stay I would come again. - Nice atmosphere great food, nice touch with sweet jar in the room Ease to location not the hotel fault but a lot of road works creating lots of traffic
- Cherie (8/5): -
- Darren (8/5): -
- Russell (8/5): - The rooms are comfortable and plenty of space good price Bathrooms are a bit tired but still perfectly usable
- Nazia (9/5): -
- Par (9/5): -
- Andy (8/5): -
- Ralph (8/5): Good stay. Comfortable and friendly - Will fitted out. Room comfortable
- Amelia (7/5): Good for what we needed - Property was clean and comfortable staff very helpful , good amount of hot water and the buffet breakfast was good . Bathroom looked a bit tired and outdated
- Anne (4/5): A tired property and a little out the way for walking to restaurants - Staff were good, comfortable bed. A little tired and dated. Confusion over the kitchen being closed which meant my guests had to travel for food. A little out the way, not many facilities around the area,
- kas01uk (10/5): Another great return x - Once again another great stay at the Priory. We do try to visit once a month as we love the smashing team, the comfortable room, and the ambiance of the hotel. The food and drinks always spot on too.
We always start our stay with a delicious afternoon tea. We just couldn’t start our stay without it. A huge thanks to the ever fab Danny for taking such great care of us as always. Thanks Danny x Nothings ever too much trouble, and he’s always on hand to make sure we are so well looked after x
This visit, we also had the pleasure of being taken care of by John who we hadn’t seen for some time. It was good to catch up with him too.
After returning to our cosy room to relax, we then enjoyed a great dinner back in the restaurant, with Danny and John once again taking great care of us. Those guys are a credit, and work tirelessly to make sure everything was spot on. The three courses we chose were delicious ( they have a new menu now so it’s good to see some different choices) Good to see our favourite steak still featured ( always a smashing choice). They’ve also had a refurb in the restaurant, and it looks bright and elegant. Just in time for ( hopefully) a beautiful summer. They have seating and tables outside in the pretty garden, and summertime it’s lovely to go sit outside with a drink and bite to eat.
After our usual really peaceful, good nights sleep ( we’ve said on many previous reviews that another great thing about the Priory is it’s always lovely and snuggly warm throughout the hotel and especially in our room. Such a game player for us during the colder months. Always hot piping water too) We were warmly greeted next morning by young Seth who always sorts my favourite mushroom cheese omelette with chef, and Sophie who we always love to catch up with bless her x
As usual breakfast offerings are good and very well presented. We always check out afterwards with full tums, and memories of another fab stay.
Frank the master of the ship ! was away on leave this visit, so we didn’t get to say hi to him or lovely Hannah. We will catch up next visit we are sure x
Thanks wholeheartedly once again to everyone at the Priory. They work so hard to make sure us guests are well taken care of.
See you all again soon.
Karen and Steve x
