Guest Reviews
- Jessica (2/5): - The room was unsafe to stay in. There was an air conditioner unit propping the window open with some loose particle board partially covering the remaining open window. The lock on the door was just a doorkkob that had been repositioned. The sheets were either stained or dirty. The entire place smelled of pot. Gross gross gross. Do not book, you will not get a refund.
- Keith (2/5): - Central Park West Hostel-New York, misrepresents itself as being a clean, inviting, and comfortable hostel. In fact, there is infestation of roachs in the common/kitchen/lounging area=a small all purpose area. There were roaches in the bathroom area as well. The staff were pleasant and helpful, but the accomodations were a lot to be desired. I will not recommend this hostel.
- Owen (4/5): - Cheap but roaches
- Bailey (4/5): - It wouldn't be bad if it weren't for the bugs. Sooooo many bugs.
- John (2/5): - The rooms are incredibly basic, run-down, dirty. The bed is an iron structure which creaks with the slightest movement. Main lights in the room did not work nor did most of the sockets. I was not provided with a towel, despite asking, and had just one sheet as a bed cover - I slept fully clothed. Toilets are disgusting, broken and half work. Showers needed a good scrub.
First night I was supposed to have a "private" bathroom but this was not available so I used a communal bathroom. I was moved for the second night, and there was a bathroom, which was very bad.
The location is good, right off Broadway and a block to Central Park.
Staff were polite but didn't follow up on the few requests I made.
Bottom line - don't stay here, this will probably be the worst place you've ever spent a night.
- Cameron (2/5): - The room looked nothing like the pictures displayed on the website. The room was horrific. The entrance was not welcoming at all.
- mohsen (10/5): - It is a beautiful and wonderful place surrounded by all services, but it is better for those who want to go to keep their car at home.
- Edison (6/5): - They should do a deep clean in the water dispenser, small insects in it... and some cockroaches were in the bathroom. The rest is ok đ
- Victor (2/5): - the furniture is old, dirty and ripped, no lightbulbs, the space in between the toilet and the wall is super reduced, the sink is full of mold. And the smell of weed inside the building is horrendous.
- Paula (2/5): - We went to the property and nobody answered. We could not do a check in, and now they donât want to refund us
- Sean (6/5): - Good location.
- Briana (2/5): - I booked this room because as it was advertised on Expedia, it appeared clean and nice for the price; what i got proved it false advertisement. What pictures you see are specifically curated. Very likely the first floor. Which is the only floor to have wifi by the way, in the lounge.
The free wifi advertisment is a lie.
I also was not informed that I, a woman, would be sharing a room- much less with a random man that walked in while I was half naked and sleeping. The front desk treated me as if I was unreasonable for being deeply disturbed and traumatised by this, and I immediately left that night.
- Léia (4/5): - There is not hot water, everything very dirty, restrooms, rooms.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Avoid this hostel. - Very bare. No lockers in the dorms, room is poorly lit and not well-ventilated, the lounge area with the adjacent mess hall are unkempt, and the communal shower rooms are grimy and do not have toilet rolls. The hostel's only positive attribute is its very close proximity to Central Park, convenience stores, and the subway.
- Edon (2/5): - It seems that there are local homeless people living in the propriety (not that is a problem, but they need to add extra steps to keep the place clean), and there are so many cockroaches everywhere. They must not have done proper pest control for several months.
- Sheila (8/5): - Great option with great location and price.
- Marilyn (8/5): - Great location, friendly and helpful staff, would definitely stay here again.
- Takashi (6/5): - Not recommend to general travelers
- RENEE (4/5): - Unfortunately, the pictures are way nicer on the sites. Luckily I only saw one roach which was near the lobby kitchen area and no rats. Great location however.
- Monica (6/5): - The same issue mentioned in previous reviews: noisy from HC/heating-air conditioner. Good location, but definitely, need maintenance.
- Verified traveler (4/5): Nice location - Location is great.
It was too hot and noisy during night because oil heater kept running all night.
- Katrina (6/5): - It's exactly what you pay for. Where else can you stay in NYC for this price? The bed was very uncomfortable and the provided sheet left me freezing through out the night...Other than that, it's a roof over your head for a great price.
- Mohammad Shachhu (8/5): do - Everything is ok.but window has no protection and broken half part of aircooler site that delivered cool air all times.i think owner of hostel need to make some renovation of window and other necessary parts of rooms
- Verified traveler (6/5): - No amenities except Wi-Fi, but only on ground floor. Low rates but only a few dollars less than another hostel 15 blocks uptown which offers a lot of amenities. Rooms are only 2 person rooms.
- sima (2/5): - This was the worst experience ever!!! I only stayed there for 1 night because I had no other option but left the property the next day asap in the morning! The pictures on the website have nothing to do with the real rooms! Very dirty, cockroaches everywhere! Bad smell in the building! Very hotand you can not open any windows!!! I cancelled my stay and I want refund!!
- Xiomara (2/5): - The hotel was in terrible condition. There were cockroaches in my room.
- Verified traveler (2/5): DirtyâNo bother to sweep, scrub, etc. - The most disgusting hostel ever. There were no attempts to clean or maintain this building. Nothing had been swept or cleaned prior to my arrival except my sheets and pillowcase over a pancake thin pillow. Chairs in the room were falling apart and looked like they were picked up while dumpster diving. The window in my room didnât close all the way. The shower drain didnât work. The key system didnât work so they had to let me in the building and room. The bathroom smelled like mildew. No internet.
- enrico (2/5): - I just stay there one night. Horrible
Dirty, people doing drugs on the hall way.
Really bad and I want a refund please
- Tamas (4/5): - It's cheap which is excellent for a college student who visits NY for a one night stand or for anybody, who wants to save money. However the conditions for cheap payment comes with poor quality.
- byron (10/5): - Absolutely phenomenal
- byron (10/5): - Stop star quality, I could not even believe my own eyes as I was not expecting this!!! All these bad reviews are people that where drunk!! This place is creme Della creme!!! It's better then a 1000 USD dollar hotel right by the park!!!
- byron (8/5): - It's a good place, for the price it's great you share a room with only one person and people that work here are chilled and leave you alone, you don't have to pay a fee for the deposit. Nice thing is that you have the bath and shower room to your self and it is not like other places where there are 3 showers in one room. It's not a luxury 7star place but it's been my favorite budget place in NYC so far
- Anthony (10/5): - Awesome staff, quiet and clean. Most friendly.
- Nathaniel (2/5): - When I arrived, they had forgone my reservation and were full. I had to find another place to stay in the middle of the night. Bad experience
- SIU SHO (2/5): - Extremely dirty place with horrendous staffing and management. Line up always at the door and people donât have keys to go to their room.
False advertisement. Need to sue this place asps for fraudulent advertising.
- Jennifer (2/5): - THIS IS A SCAM DO NOT BOOK HERE
- Irakli (2/5): - The place was disaster - and service was horrible - toilets and bathrooms were too dirty and nothing is good about that place!
- Kyler (2/5): - The staff were nice and we were right next to the subway stop. However, it took 40 minutes to check in since when we arrived no one was at the front desk (another person had also been waiting even longer than us). The sheets were also dirty and we saw a bed bug. Definitely bring your own blanket if you get cold. They also didn't have soap in the bathroom to wash your hands and the showers were dirty.
- anna (2/5): Offered to stay in the lobby - they over booked so we were told to sleep in the lobby or go somewhere else at 1am. The lobby already had 3 people sleeping in it and it was a tiny closet like room. No refunds for their mistakes either
- Eric (8/5): - Pretty fair rates for Manhattan imo
- Austin (4/5): Not as bad as some say - People have been a little hard on this place. Yes it is pretty low-end but does have the basics. They are right to say bring your own towel and blanket though. And soap for hand/shower
- ivanni (2/5): - Dirty bathrooms, there were cockroaches in the bed, the bathroom windows were broken, the chair in the room was broken and the air conditioning did not cool, you could not sleep in the heat.
- Levi (4/5): - It's cheap so you get what you pay for. I don't mind lower quality accommodations so it didn't bother me, and I was prepared for the bad conditions. No air conditioning, you'll have to keep the window propped open with something and the street is loud that far downtown. Some small roaches in shared kitchen area so I didn't use it. No hand soap in bathroom, but I had hand sanitizer. Shower looked sketchy so I bathed in the sink.
The hardest part was no phone at the front desk. I couldn't call from the airport to ask about the shuttle. It was advertised but not actually a thing anymore. They got rid of it a few years ago ("covid," but I doubt it.)
The desk staff was just two random dudes on their phones hanging out, one counting a large amount of cash which felt a little weird. They were nice enough though. The maid was very nice despite the terrible state of the place, though I don't think it was his fault. He was doing his best.
On the plus side, you're right next to a subway stop. So getting there from the airport wasn't too bad. It took about an hour.My train to the airport was canceled though, and when I finally got to the M60 bus stop it drove past me and opened its doors for two seconds way down the street then left. I had to pay $40 or $50 for an uber to get to the airport on time. So if you're not a local be prepared that the pubic transport isn't very reliable.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Worst accommudstion of my life. - The hostel was super ditry and bad smelling. Cockroaches running around everywhere. I wouldn't even stay there for free, but I must because I spent more than a 100$/night. They should close down the whole place. Everything was in terrible condition. The bedsheets had more hair on them than clean spots.
- Philip (2/5): - The people who run this place are nice enough but they need to do a far better job maintaining the place. They should make sure toilet paper and soap is stocked up in every bathroom, air blowers are functioning, and that the showers are consistently cleaned.
- Austin (8/5): - It's a place if you need a place in NYC, it is close to Central Park or opposite direction the river walk. Location is great. And close to a main artery Subway station. However lacking in areas.
Smaller rooms, one of the toilets I had to beg to flush, cleaning staff may have been on vacay, it's an older building, the common area was,
They do have a coffee machine, vending machine, a large shared refrigerator for food ( I didn't see anywhere to cook besides a microwave) a fun map with pushpins in it, and a community room futon.
Price was excellent for NYC. I am glad it was available for me to book while in town.Thank You Central Park West Hostel.
- Charlotte (2/5): - Unfortunately the whole property is in very poor condition with unsanitary restrooms, dirty showers and the rooms themselves smell like urine with clearly used bed sheets.
The description promised body wash etc., but not even soap was provided.
Also the âair conditioningâ can hardly be called that, it was hot the entire night.
The common room was a mess too, with dirty furniture and trash laying around.
Because of this situation I wasnât able to sleep and checked out around 4 am.
Sorry, but thatâs a definite no for me.
- Snehashish (8/5): - The staff is helpful but the facilities are pretty bad the door lock system has only one key which is only accessible by the staff so you cant keep going and coming back to the room without being escorted by the staff member.
- Patara (4/5): - Get what you paid for. You can find Coffee 2 days old and cockroaches in the kitchen area.
- Esteban (2/5): - Conditions of the place are bad
- Quentin (4/5): - The property is older and feels run down. There was an odor (urine?) in the elevator. They didnât have keys for any of the rooms because their system was âdown.â. You had to be escorted to your room by the front desk person - that meant WAITING for someone to come to the desk. Sometimes, I had to wait 10 minutes.
Overall, I would not recommend and will not return.
- Timothy (10/5): - Affordable, comfortable, a lot of culture in the area
- Yecenia (4/5): - The listing doesn't list many amenities which I did not expect with the budget I was on, but my room smelled like a litter box which gave me a headache and I could not get the few hours of sleep I paid for, there was no soap in the bathroom to wash my hands, and there wasn't any hot water so I got to embrace military roots in taking a cold shower. Overall it was not worth the money. Thank God He allowed me to drepen my appreciation of all the blessings that I do have.
- Daniel (2/5): - Staff was nice but deeply unhelpful. Place was very unclean, lots of bugs.
- Vitoria (4/5): - They donât have keys for your own door!
- ALAN (10/5): - It has been a great experience and stay in this place. The place is central and easily accessible, the workers of the place were always very friendly and courteous. The treatment by the staff has been the best, I highly recommend it.
- Erdal (6/5): - Staff was great. Just good and hardworking people.
As far as the price you get more than what you pay for.
- Kenneth (2/5): - Upon arrival I was given a bed. When I went to the room there was someone else in the bed they gave me. Then I was given another bed in an other room. The next night I came back to someone sleeping in my bed. I had to gather my stuff in a completely dark room and be given another bed! đ they only had cold water and provide no soap or towels. Avoid this place!
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Barely any soap or toilet paper available.
- Muhammad (4/5): - I found coachroach in my room . Bed was uncomfortable. The main entrance door is lock and they not provided the key for that , we have to knock from outside and they open it late some times .room ac is not cooling well ,feel very hot ,Will not go again
- Andrew (2/5): My stay - Very poor condition. Worse than last i stayed. I asked for a bottom bunk but wasn't given one. Had to ask the other person to swap which luckily they did. Sometimes there was no loo roll.
- Joshua (6/5): - For a hostel itâs not bad but their key card system didnât work so any time you left your room youâd have to leave it unlocked or go down to the lobby and wait for someone to let you into the room. The deadbolt didnât work which was scary
- Nayeli Estefania (2/5): - There is a lot of noise from the neighbors and they did not allow you to sleep well, you have to wait for the person to open your room every time you leave, it is very uncomfortable.
- jeffrey (8/5): - no problem with punctuality. good location, good co-guest, good space. the only thing was the heating pipe needs a cover... other than that, stay was better than most places: chinatown, bronx, queens
- Shibu (2/5): - No key. No blank in winter. Terrific.
- Daniel (4/5): You get what you pay - The photos don't look like the place at all, but you get what you pay.
- Olasile (2/5): - Worst place Iâve ever stayed in a hostel. Gross, dirty, unsafe and unreliable staff
- Julie (2/5): - Door to street unlocked, property unmarked, no staff at desk upon arrival, bathrooms out of order or moldy, dirty pillows and sheets, no available blankets, broken AC in window. Photos look nothing like the actual facility. Other patrons appear to live there and many were drunk in the lobby. I did not stay and sadly realized it too late for a refund. Please remove this property from Expedia so that no one else makes the same mistake I did.
- Jose (8/5): - The location is convenient and clean. But the place is super noisy because is located right in front of the metro line. So, don't expect to rest there. Better windows would make a big difference.
- Piyawadee (2/5): - I like that they have an old elevator and staffs are helpful. I donât like a lot starting from my room key doesnât open the door and staff had to help me open. The restroom ran out of tissue, the floor not so clean with the oily soap on. The mattress was so thin and my body touched the steel frame under the mattress, it hurt I gotta have their blanket put on mattress then I could sleep. No kitchen. Location is very near to subways.
- Raul (2/5): - - What did I like? Only the zone.
- What did I not like?
1. The check-in: they made me wait almost 24 hours to give me a room since they were over-booked, they said the 1st day would be refunded but it was not, they never even mentioned the subject anymore.
2. The property seems okay from the outside but it is in terrible condition on the inside, from the furniture to the elevator and the staircases.... EVERYTHING is old and in terrible condition.
3. The staff is somehow friendly but it seems like they do not care too much about the wellbeing of their guests.
4. The property condition and facilities are really bad. I don't know how can the authorities can let them operate and run a place like this. Is it true that they offer stays below the average for NY but they should invest in the property, the bathrooms, the elevator, the windows, the A/C, everything needs replacement.
I would never recommend anyone to go to this place and I would never go back there. I rather spend more than stay at a HORRIBLE place like this one.
- Yulia (4/5): - location and affordable price that is all you get.
old building with narrow elevator and stairs that require repair because they crack right under your feet. they were out of towels and warm blankets when i arrived, dirty bathrooms, 2 bathrooms for approximately 12 rooms (2-10 persons each?). there is no signboard with the hostel name, or it is tiny and invisible. very easy to miss the correct entry. my room had a window looking toward ventilation pit and fire stairs. it was dark inside the room all day long. night dark. the mattress was 5 inches thick, so it was extremely uncomfortable to sleep on the ikea metal frame base. the room had no shelves or cabinets to keep belongings and generally looked like a prison cell. dog hair was everywhere in common areas.
- Kunte (10/5): - The internet only worked downstairs no tvs in rooms and no keys for the rooms loved the location though
- Nenad (4/5): - Only one restroom was open at 3rd floor for 11 rooms and always was busy. Only 1 of 3 power outlet was working in the room. Everything is very old and need renovation.
Location is really good, close to the subway and on walking distance from Central Park
- Yuko (10/5): - Good location with excellent services.
So much selection of morning coffee.
I love to stay again when I come back to SF.
- Jeffrey (2/5): - Generally poor.
The hostel is in a great location but has little resemblance to the pictures or description.
No kitchen, just a dining room with a sofa a fridge a vending machine and a microwave.
No blankets just sheets. Bed very uncomfortable with a thin foam mattresses.
Corridors filthy. Bathrooms clean but in very poor repair. 2 of 3 bathrooms on 2nd floor were out of order.
The first room we were allocated was smelly and the air conditioning was broken. We requested a move and ended up in a better room although the door barely locked.
- kathleen (10/5): - Have stayed here many times and always am pleased.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Have stayed here many times and always am pleased.
- Sarah (10/5): Great location! - It was what I was expecting from a hostel. One thing that surprised me was there were no blankets on the beds, only sheets. But the location was EXCELLENT! Two blocks from the subway and just a few blocks from Central Park.
- kathleen (8/5): - Great location, near subways, good wifi.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Great location, near subways, good wifi.
- Mathias (4/5): - Dirty room, lot of noice in the hallways
- Alejandro (2/5): - All is bad
- Balbir (8/5): - Location was good with friendly staff available 24 hours.
- Jong Ha (2/5): - First gave me a room with a door that doesn't shut all the way (and therefore cannot lock). Second room had no AC. Third room already had two people in it. Front staff was confused too about the whole situation and was trying to help me out but there was nothing he could do.
Asked for a full refund through expedia but the manager declined. Manager never was there when all this was going on, and front staff couldn't even get a hold of the manager. Horrible management.
- kathleen (8/5): - The staff are great and the location sublime.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - The staff are great and the location sublime.
- Midhat (2/5): - Terrible bed
- Beatriz Lafuente (2/5): - The cleanliness could be improved everywhere. I left my clothes in a drawer and I found them full of bugs the next day.
I found a period pad in my roommate's bed.
On my last day, I wanted to take a shower (in the only one that worked), but I couldn't because there was a pigeon in the bathroom.
- Juan (6/5): - Ok
- Michael (4/5): - A note on the front desk greeted me upon arrival that stated the employee would be returning in 15 minutes. My daughter and I waited for over 50 minutes. No apology was given. The gentleman who checked us out of the hostel however was pleasant.
The beds are basic to say the least. Be prepared to sleep on half of the bed since a bar goes across the middle and the mattress is thin.
The bathroom door on the fourth floor was kicked through on the bottom corner about 1.5 feet wide and 1 foot high. No toilet paper.
The most concerning aspect was there was NO WINDOW in one bathroom, only a curtain which covered access to an external staircase. I would consider this a significant safety issue since this was the fourth floor and gives access to the entire building.
- Robert (6/5): - Location was good. No wifi above first floor.
- Patricia (4/5): - Arrived and attempted to check-in at 11:30 pm on Sunday, 6-26-22. No one was at the reception desk and there was a sign that read âFront desk will be back. Please wait in lobby.â We waited and waitedâŠ. It was not until 1:33 am that the front desk staff finally arrived. The rules of the hostel are posted and clearly state staff are on duty 24 hours per day. Apparently, theyâre not.
- kathleen (10/5): - location, location, location...
staff helpful, very friendly.
have stayed before, am a return customer
- Lalaine (8/5): - I liked how it was an affordable place to stay it New York. Maintenance could improve but canât complain for the price of it
- Verified traveler (10/5): - location, location, location...
staff helpful, very friendly.
have stayed before, am a return customer
- Patricia (2/5): - Not worth the price
- Melina Del Valle (2/5): - the staff was nice! but our roomâs window was broken and we freeze, they only give us blankets in order to resolve the problem
- jorge (2/5): - not nice the toilet was very dirt, the picture from the hostel its not the same!
