- Alex (5/5): Good location, valus for money - Nice and clean Old fashioned
- Shirley (7/5): - Good parking and location No bar😱
- Kevin (8/5): -
- Trevor (8/5): everything we needed to explore Colchester and somewhere to park the car - Lovely breakfast Bathroom door sticking
- Nicolai (7/5): - prima ???
- Katy (8/5): A comfortable, budget stay on the edge of town. - Nice big bathroom although the shower head needs descaling as water went in all directions. Breakfast was excellent, shame there was no other food offer at this hotel. A lift would be useful but i understand it is a very old building so it might not be feasible to install. I would have liked to have been able to open the window in my room for some fresh air.
- Tom Ciesco (8/5): Lovely hotel - Very friendly staff, clean room and a unique charming building
- nicola (9/5): - Amazing room with comfortable bed Train noise but it didn't disturb sleep
- Sue (8/5): -
- Gabrielle (9/5): A comfortable stay in an interesting 14C period property with large, excellent breakfast. - A beautiful 14C property with comfortable, clean room. Excellent breakfast and nice, old bar. Awkward getting in & out by car.
- Alison (8/5): Convenient location at a good price - Love this old hotel with parking , so no worries about the car The window wouldn’t open in our room and it was very stuffy , I wouldn’t want to stay in that room again
- Polpitiye (6/5): -
- Dave (4/5): - Nothing Everything
- Josette (8/5): - The breakfast was excellent. and the staff very friendly
Good car park

- Jennifer (7/5): Not bad, not great - 15 minutes walk to the main part of the town centre
Friendly staff.
Comfortable bed and pillows. One member of staff working at breakfast. There were no plates to put food on when I went up to buffet. When we ordered cooked breakfast was told to make own toast, but there was no bread left. Asked for some more bread and plates. The bread wasnt brought out until after our cooked breakfast was served. Not the young man's fault as he was polite and friendly and trying to juggle everything by himself.
The bathroom seals around the floor were broken and dirty looking.
- stewart (6/5): - Nothing no carling beer Not like web site photos
- Louise (6/5): Convenient location as at a wedding held there. Breakfast was nice. Staff friendly. But bedroom was a bit bland! - Beautiful old building. Lovely staff Bed was uncomfortable, me and my husband both woke up feeling sore and stiff. Mattress was hard and bumpy.
Bedrooms lack any character and very sparse.
- Matthias (8/5): -
- Gill (8/5): Lumpy pillows, but excellent location. - We've stayed here many times, the location is excellent.
The breakfast was so good, a good buffet selection, and the English fry up was freshly cooked to order.
Happy to see the dungeons open down below, very interesting. Unfortunately the pillows were very lumpy, so not a great nights sleep.
Previously lunch, ie sandwiches were available, this was a few visits ago, this visit we had to go out for lunch. I believe they are looking into supplying lunch in the future.
- Andrew (10/5): Would stay again. Great value and a nice place to stay. - Friendly staff, clean, good value for moneh Breakfast was good but not great. A little overcooked!
- Melanie (10/5): -
- Paul (9/5): -
- Hazel (8/5): Comfortable stay - Parking was good, room comfortable and bar convenient. Bedside light one side of the double bed didn't have a bulb
The extractor fan in the bathroom didn't work.
- Steven (9/5): - I loved the building and the old style beams and the bedroom was comfortable Nothing
- Gweneth (8/5): Staff and location lovely, it met my needs for this trip. - The bedding and towels were so clean, but unlike many Hotel towels, not stiff and scratchy, excellent housekeeping. I felt cold, the radiator was fine but it would be nice to have an extra blanket in the room already. Also the shower water temperature was a bit difficult to set, with small movement only it went from freezing cold to scalding hot.
- Caroline (7/5): Beautiful Historic Building - Great location about 15 minutes walk to City centre. Car parking was a real bonus as car parks were quite a distance and often full! The building is beautiful with so much character which has been maintained. Every member of Staff was friendly and professional. Breakfasts were good and the Bar was open each evening with Staff who were, again, friendly and interested in how our day had been. This was what made our stay enjoyable. Our room was small and felt very dusty. There was no opening window as the sash was painted shut,so there was a lack of fresh air. It was quiet, despite the train gates being just outside and housekeeping was good. The shower was way too powerful and it was difficult to manage the heat setting and volume
Such a shame as the rest of the Hotel was lovely. Because of this we would think twice about staying again.

- Jennifer (9/5): Comfortable stay, absolutely lovely staff that couldn’t do enough for us, delicious breakfasts. - Very friendly staff, couldn’t do enough for us! Quaint old property, lots of charm and character. Facilities good, bed comfortable nice and warm. Delicious breakfasts Noise from some sort of generator going on and off all night
- sarah (10/5): A lot of effort from all workers. Nice rooms. - They upgraded us and put our rooms in the same building. Nothing.
- Bernie (9/5): -
- Andrea (9/5): -
- Joanne (4/5): Wedding guest - Full of character
Friendly staff
Coffee machine in room! Even though I was part of the wedding party , the noise from the downstairs was so loud in my bedroom it was as though I was still on the dance floor !
- Dale (8/5): -
- Colin (10/5): -
- Colleen (8/5): Amazing building, very historical and lucky to have the chance to stay here. - Beautiful old building with charm A little out of town
- Susan (7/5): - The twin room I booked was adequate and comfortable.
We attended a wedding and the dietary requirements for the sit down meal for my friend were very good as she is lactose and wheat intolerant. The bathroom needed a bit of attention in places. The area under the bath was not finished off properly. It was also a bit grimy there at one end. There was no handrail on the wall. I am an older lady so to get in and out of the bath, I had to be careful not to slip as there was nothing to hold on to!
It is a wedding venue, which was the reason for our stay During the evening at the wedding, the bar only had one member of staff so there were long queues to get drinks. My friend asked why there was only one member of staff. She was told by the Batman that someone was supposed to help but that was two hours before.
At breakfast the following morning, my friend who is lactose intolerant, asked for some soya milk for her tea. They could only offer her coconut milk which was not acceptable in a cup of tea. This needs to be given some thought.
We were also glad we arrived a little early, as we got the last parking spot in the car park. I don't know where we would have parked otherwise as there's no parking outside the hotel.

- F6752JNandrewd (4/5): Cashless but not stated - Arrived and went to pay for stay but won’t accept cash ?? . Not advertised or expected only took cash, luckily wife had a card . Spoilt whole stay as was going to eat and drink in bar , one of the reasons for booking this hotel was the bar. We found elsewhere but may as well of stayed elsewhere
- Nuno (3/5): - Old architecture, and Dick Turpin dungeon Stayed here recently and unfortunately the experience was disappointing.
Despite being a paying guest and correctly registering my vehicle at reception, I later received a parking charge from their contractor. After appealing, even the parking company acknowledged I was a guest, yet still requested payment due to what appears to be a system failure on their side. The hotel was contacted to help resolve it but didn’t respond or assist, leaving me to deal with it and ultimately pay £20 for something that clearly wasn’t my fault.
On top of that, the room itself had a noticeable unpleasant smell, and the shower only functioned at extremely hot temperatures, making it uncomfortable to use.
Overall, it feels like the hotel has outsourced key parts of the guest experience (like parking) without taking responsibility when things go wrong. Issues happen, but the lack of support and accountability is what made this particularly frustrating.
I would not stay again unless these problems are addressed.
- David (7/5): Good value shame no restaurant food apart from breakfast - Location parking breakfast toiletries Coffee and tea facilities friendly staff No restaurant food, duvet was to thin, pillows could do with upgrading, coffee machine didn’t work
- Jean (9/5): Rose & Crown overnight stay - Lovely quaint building, beautifully kept, very clean and cosy room. The free, on-site, parking was an absolute boon for us. Staff extremely welcoming and helpful. To be honest, there was nothing to complain about. We cannot comment on the breakfast as we didn't order - we're not big breakfast eaters

- Warren (7/5): Would use again for convenience. - Nice friendly staff with location was convenient for my visit. Room backed onto train track which could hear until late & started early.
No option of food being served in the evening.
- Neil (10/5): For visiting tourists this was exactly as described and shown in the Booking’s listing for this property. The lack of a - LOTS Of character and features due to its age and yet the facilities were modern and functional.
- Barb (9/5): Exactly as I would’ve wished. - Convenient and has everything you need for working in Colchester.
- Northener70 (10/5): Great night - Marks performance was excellent, we enjoyed it last year so decided to come this year with a few more friends. The food was lovely, the staff are really friendly. We had to change our rooms because of work being done, but we were compensated. We will definitely attend another tribute.
- Dawn (8/5): Comfortable rooms friendly staff good amenities and reasonably priced - The property was a relaxing and the bed was very comfortable the touches like shampoo soaps tea and coffee was very welcomed No real negatives my only thing for future is you need to update your tvs to smart tvs so Netflix etc can be watched
- Renny (7/5): -
- Paul (10/5): - Olde Worlde hotel very comfortable and welcoming.
- Barb (8/5): Really good place to stay if you’re working in town and you need somewhere you can walk in and out easily and leave your - It was exactly what I wanted perfectly good for working in Colchester. Everything was fine.
- Steve (9/5): - Peaceful stay in a busy location.
- Brigitte (10/5): Ich würde wieder hierher kommen! - Alles Nichts
- brian (8/5): - room comfortablem breakfast was vwey good
- Smith (8/5): -
- Lee (9/5): Warm, friendly pub with a lot of character in the rooms. - Room was nice, lovely character in the pub / room. Staff very friendly with excellent customer service including the bar staff. Large Christmas party taking place, so room in the bar was limited for a short time but all left to eat, so quietened down. bathroom door was glass and opposite the window, so light was slightly annoying when trying to sleep (personal preference as very light sleeper) towel over the door worked ok
- terri61382 (8/5): 3 adults stay - Stayed for 2 nights with my mom and sister. Booked family room with 3 beds, Room was totally unsuitable for our party, very dark poor lighting (proberly good as there was a years worth of dust down the back of the beds), only had a bath and a shower attachment with no screen or curtain. Bathroom floor sloped away, with steps into the toilet area. My mom is in her mid 70s partially sighted and my sister in her 50s with some mobility issues. Staff were very accomadating and agreed to move our room. End in room 222. Much better lighting , but only had 2 beds, so my sister and i had to share like we were kids again. Again both my sister and mom were unable to use the shower over the bath as there were no grap rails to help get in or out. Even as someone perfectly able bodied i had to steady myself with the sink. This room was in the modern side of the hotel and was much cleaner than the 1st.
Car park was very small, luckily we found a space although spaces were small for anything bigger than a small hatchback. I have a BMW M3 and struggled.
We ate breakfast in the hotel. Was ok, for a hotel breakfast and even dealt with my sister complicated requests.
Its a quirky hotel and proberly not suited for our needs.
The gentleman a reception on our 1st night who changed our room could not have been more helpful and really is a credit to the hotel.
As the 3 we would not stay here again as the facilities were not suitable, although if i travelled alone or with my husband i may look at stopping again.

- 02cute1 (10/5): Amazing place!! - All I can say is wow.... As someone who loves history this was a bargain... I asked to stay in the old part and was surprised and so pleased when I realised they had done this. I had a standard double room, lots of tea and coffee bits, lovely comfortable bed with a proper mattress but the main bit is the beams!! It is so beautiful and the rooms are made up so well.... The person at reception couldn't be more helpful and I was worried because we were checking in late but they are open 24/7! Downstairs we were able to order a take away and sit in the pub bit, everyone was so friendly and it's a real steal. We have already planned to come back.

- David (8/5): A Very quaint stay, but don't come if you are hungry. - The staff is very welcoming and took very good care of me. I relocated to the UK and spent my first three weeks at Rose and Crown Hotel. Thank you all for a wonderful experience. My recommendation for newly weds - STAY AT THE ROSE AND CROWN! The rooms in the old part of the hotel are bathed in antiquity but with modern touches. Very nice. I will be honest, I do not like complaining. The hotel room and the staff is extremely nice. My only complaint is in regard to the restaurant. The only meal they provide is breakfast. I like a hot breakfast, but the only two choices is Full English and Eggs Benedict. Keep in mind, if you ask for something, they will try and accommodate. I feel the cook and wait staff needs training. I asked for an over-medium egg. The wait staff looked at me as if not knowing what this basic request is. My eggs came out, far from over medium. The eggs Benedict, one of the only items they offer, was not good. The eggs were overcooked and the hollandaise was too thick. The cook once made it with regular toast and not English muffin. I was not impressed with the menu offerings or the staff's knowledge of basic culinary practices. No lunch or dinner.... and the management just says that they do not offer any other food because they want the guests to explore more of Colchester's food. That is a very sad excuse for poor management. The truth most likely is that they can't find good cooks, they don't have enough business to support full menus, and no proper staff to support anything BUT a two dish menu. Very poor, in my opinion.
- Annette (8/5): -
- Doreen (7/5): Nice stay but too far out from Colchester town -
- Mel (8/5): Great first night in executive twin but not great the second in a more expensive standard double. - Spacious, amazing staff, the receptionist, the night porter and lovely young lady at breakfast morning of the 31st Jan. Such gems of people!
Love the character of the main building has been maintained. I stayed one more night on a separate booking. It wasn’t as good as the first night.
The standard double was not worth the price, and I paid more than the executive twin the night before. The executive twin had no issues at all and very comfortable, bathroom amazing.
But in the standard double, the bathroom needed some attention, you do not get a coffee machine (something I didn’t realise at the time rebooking) and it was not as quiet - there was a constant rattling in the ceiling of room 410 that kept us up all night ight. Then the breakfast wasn’t quite the same the morning of the 1st. We waited a fair bit to be seated as the sign asks, were told exactly where to sit at breakfast (no one else there and would have liked to choose) plates were missing from the bar, they ask how your eggs are cooked and my eggs were overcooked. Not that deep but seems silly to ask and bring out something different but not even acknowledge it - I would have been fine, just that tiny bit of awareness makes the different. The coffee is filtered at breakfast but they do have a coffee machine that didn’t seem to be used. Again fine but the second morning it tasted a bit off so couldn’t drink it.
It’s a real shame - paid more the second night and somehow got way less of an experience. Writing in this one so they see the comparison.
Executive twin was fantastic but the second. Book of standard double including the breakfast service was far inferior - just confused how I paid more. Could have stayed elsewhere that night but came back based on the first night which it didn’t live up to sadly.
- David (9/5): - Good value good location
- Robert (7/5): -
- Larrox (8/5): Nice Hotel but B&B Only - We were fortunate enough to stay in a superior family room that was comfortable, spacious and fairly well equipped.
The Rose and Crown is a very old building and shows its age in some respects but does have some charm.
The hotel does not do evening meals but the breakfast was good enough - decent fare at the buffet and exceptionally good Eggs Benedict.
One possible down side is that the hotel is a 10-15 minute walk the centre of Colchester but that was fine for us and on the plus side, adequate free parking.
- james (8/5): -
- Charlotte (7/5): Quaint building - Lovely quaint old building, friendly staff nice sized room. Duvet a bit light for us.
- Gina (8/5): -
- Davis (7/5): Was fine for the 1 night - Clean, friendly. Comfy bed, nice linens A bit tired, breakfast v basic
- Loretta (10/5): A step back in time.. - We love the age of the place and the original quirkiness. We had a lovely stay but are room was in the newer part and we would of liked to be in the original part.
- Victor (7/5): Good place to stay for business trip to Colchester - Room was warm and comfortable with a good shower. Bed was comfortable. Good car park. 10 min walk to wide selection of restaurants in town. Lots of breakfast options from hotel's kitchen. The building is very old and historic with timber beams but everything worked perfectly. It would be good to have some kind of evening food option and that might liven up the lounge a bit too which was very quiet during our stay.
- Emeje (7/5): I enjoyed my sleep, no noise - Location Walls
- Margaret (5/5): just done it - Really pleasant hotel, clean & basic - gpod enough value for money - restaurant was drab. Staff on another evening a bit naff. as above
- Maria Rose (10/5): wonderful - room lovely staff lovely place lovely nothing
- Marian (9/5): -
- Laura (10/5): Amazing - Booked it for my 8year olds birthday and she loved her stay. Wasn’t told there was a fan in the wardrobe, room was extremely hot.
- Karen (9/5): -
- Rosana (9/5): - La ubicación No tiene servicio de comida ni cena, sólo dan desayuno.
- Maureen (Mr &Mrs Pj) (9/5): - We have been to this hotel before so knew it wld be good. We were in Essex to attend our granddaughters Graduation & had a very enjoyable break I don't think there was anything to dislike
- Jayne (1/5): Dirty, unsafe and not as advertised - Rooms in annexe building were in very poor condition. Holes in wall with peeling plaster. Water dripping and running from toilet all night. TV not working. No heat control or air con. We were travelling with family for a one night stay (trust me that was enough). Our family members room had live electrical wires exposed and even after reporting this nothing was done. When we arrived early afternoon we were told the bar/restaurant opens from 5pm to Midnight. We arrived back at the hotel around 11.30pm from an evening out and were told that the bar was closed. Overall a very poor experience and I am surprised it carries the Best Western Brand. Avoid if possible.
- Catherine (9/5): Easy walk into town, helpful staff and clean comfortable room - Clean and good size room and bathroom.
