Guest Reviews
- Molly (10/5): - All the facilities were awesome and clean (I found the bed extremely comfortable. The pool tables were a huge plus in my books. The kitchen was also well-equipped. The bartender, Seb, was lovely to interact with and definitely contributed to making my whole experience at REAL. Drinks at the pub are cheap - and come in a chilled glass which you don't get everywhere. Nothing comes to mind at all.

- Ivan (6/5): - It's a good option if you are looking for a new experience as a student.
- Leonardo (10/5): Great place to stay, access to a bar w/o leaving the building. Hot sauna for free. - clean showers. Free ski rack . There's a bar which you can access w/o leaving the Hostel.
There was a free hot sauna after 4 PM . The basement is huge, there are board games and kitchen is huge.
Well located. Friendly staff.
Great place to make connections. bunker beds are awkward . It looks like a coffin . I hit my head multiple times getting into my bed .
- Kim (10/5): An amazing place to stay - I stayed here 20years ago its amazing the improvements, clean, comfortable, excellent staff and it has everything you need. I love it.
- Kyla (3/5): Good room set up. VERY loud and not relaxing. - Super loud music late in the bar - hard to fall asleep with the sounds through the floor. When arrived, got checked in and a angry housekeeper in the room
- Roumeau (5/5): - Location The linen and duvet didn’t look clean, really bad mattress
- Vogtle (7/5): - Nice room, well equipped kitchen and fair price The noise from the bar was excessive and impacted our sleep. It was cranking turns until at least midnight both nights we were there. If you are looking for a party, this is the place for you. If you are looking to turn in early to get a good night sleep before leaving early for skiing, then I’d suggest you pick a different place.
- R (6/5): - No mention of this being a hostel when we booked 🤷🏽♂️
- Jehan (9/5): -
- Susan (9/5): - People, cleanliness, all the amenities, location More light in rec room for reading

- Emlyn (3/5): Good location, but awful unhelpful staff. Highly recommend spending a little more to be comfortable. Ok for a 1 night st - Great location, good price. Awful staff, misadvertised room - didn’t receive the pictured room. No airflow in rooms, place in dire need of updates. Not clearly advertised as a hostel.
- Bradley (10/5): -
- LahraG (8/5): -
- Daniel (10/5): - The staff were super friendly, the bar was great and the karaoke was super fun. Slightly expensive, very loud in room, not for people who dont like to party
- Denise (10/5): It was a great family fest away - It was cozy and comfortable. I loved the view
- Stephanie (8/5): -
- delfour (8/5): -
- Sue (8/5): Great pod experience. - Best dorm room set up ever - every hostel should create similar pods. Comfortable space that allows for privacy. Great budget option for Fernie. I couldn’t find the showers because they weren’t labeled.
- Michael Hernberg (4/5): For a short stay the room provided a place to settle slightly. - I really liked the staff and the ease of check-in and check out. The room I stayed in was loud, dripping sound in the walls, bed felt like a sheet of cardboard on a floating bed of springs. The heat was hot and moderated by opening a window. We were just by the exit so the door was slamming throughout the night.
- Roy (10/5): -
- profaqua (9/5): Good place, but needs improvements. - Overall, I really enjoyed my stay. It was my first time staying at this place, and if I return to Fernie, I will definitely stay here again.
I appreciated the atmosphere, the concept, and the overall experience. The place is pleasant and well located, which makes it a great option for staying in Fernie. Overall, my experience was very positive. However, there are a few important points that need improvement.
First, the mattress in the luxury dorm pods was not very comfortable. It was a plastic mattress, similar to the type used for children or for bedwetting protection, which really affected the comfort.
Second, the biggest issue was with the refrigerators. None of them seemed to work properly, and it was impossible to maintain a safe temperature for food. I even had to fix the fridge I was using myself because both the fridge and freezer doors had remained open all night. My food was at room temperature, with water in my container coming from the freezer that had completely thawed. This is not very hygienic and raises serious food safety concerns. I believe the refrigerators clearly lack maintenance.
Finally, I found it disappointing that the establishment does not recycle rigid plastic. I asked the front desk about this, and they told me that the municipality of Fernie does not recycle this type of plastic. Still, from an environmental perspective, this was disappointing.
This was the only major downside of an otherwise very pleasant stay.
- Holly (8/5): -
- Davis (1/5): See above! - No A/C or remote for the TV available, room was very warm.
Two drunks next door kept me up for most of the night, no one at front desk to complain to. Had to carry heavy bags up a steep flight of stairs.
Would not recommend this place.
- DSigns Dennis (7/5): - No One told us about Breakfast? the location was fine. The stairs were a bit much. If we were younger lol
- Ryan (8/5): -
- Junaid (1/5): Avoid if you cannot make check in times. - I couldn’t have a late check in when they said they would allow it at booking. They ended up charging me for the full night! +50 dollars hold for damage deposit. I have 2 charges on my card, no refunds given. Poor customer service accommodating the request especially on a busy summer long weekend. I ended up having to spend a night in my car in a different town. Would not recommend if you are going to be running late. Better to book an Airbnb with keyless access.
- John (8/5): -
- Kevin (7/5): - Bit warm in room
- Kyle (9/5): -
- Arthur (8/5): Excellent value. Nothing fancy. Centrally located. - Centrally located. Easy walking to most anything in town. Great value. We are not fancy people, so the room was adequate: bed, bathroom storage for luggage under bed. We enjoyed the bat downstairs and talking with the locals. Very friendly. If there was a thermostat, we could not find it. Room was quite warm. Ended up opening the door to the hall to let some cold air in.
- Sarah (7/5): Decent hostel - Decent hostel, value for money, good location Poor room lighting, noise from the kodiak pub can be very loud, one bathroom towel appeared dirty on arrival but was swapped over at desk
- Dekkema (4/5): -
- Jason (8/5): -
- Ted (8/5): Adequate for what I paid for, no complaints. - The room was clean and the staff was approachable and helpful when I needed it. A little small and lacking in furniture. A bit of paint peeling in the bathroom. None of this is bothersome, as I wasn't paying for a luxury hotel room. All in all, it was more than fine for what I needed.
- Stephannie (1/5): -
- Kathleen (10/5): -
- sondergaard (10/5): -
- cathy (7/5): - The location was within walking distance to downtown shops and restaurants. The bed was soft and bathroom was very budget.
- Taylor (8/5): Love staying here for the value and space to enjoy time with friends and family - Its a hostel but the private rooms are great. Its not a five star hotel but if you expect it to be a hostel type of place then its a 5 star in my book. Check out time is a little early but wasnt a big deal as we were allowed to use the kitchen and hang out space while we gathered the whole family and got ready to go.
- Connie (10/5): Great place! Good Value! - Location, price, room view. Comfortable I liked everything
- FERNANDO (9/5): -
- Nathan (8/5): -
- Karen (8/5): - Comfy bed although had to put fan on during night as quite hot. Quiet as a distance from the railway line. A little tired looking but functional.
- Katie (6/5): -
- Leonard (9/5): -
- Dylan (7/5): -
- Kyle (7/5): Clean rooms, comfy bed, cheap prices, friendly staff could use more air flow for summer other than that thumbs up. - Decent priced rooms, comfy beds, clean friendly staff. It’s warm! I stayed in October room was 24 degrees I left window open with fan when I got there cooled down to 21 closed window and with in 30 minutes was back to 24 degrees. I like a cool sleep the fans they include helped but still way too warm for me.
- Judy (5/5): -
- Amber (10/5): - Love the pods, roomy and comfortable. Lots of great restaurants within walking distance. I was too tired to try the in-house pub but it looked great. Staff was friendly and helpful. Budget friendly option for Fernie!
- Tom (6/5): - Great location, unique rooms and layout. It would be a fun stay if I wasn't in the area for work. It's a bit dated, and needs some TLC.. I could hear pool balls clacking off each other until 1 am.
- Claudia (8/5): -
- Bats33 (10/5): -
- Michal (4/5): - The pictures are nicer than the reality. The bed was horrible.
- Leona (10/5): Comfortable, friendly staff, friendly travellers, clean & good facilities - I loved everything about the propertu Nothing
- Janet (10/5): -
- Bob (10/5): - Great location, friendly staff, clean rooms and best of all very budget friendly!!!
- Louella (8/5): -
- Andy (8/5): Very nice - Clean, great staff, good bed space Kitchen dated, lack of oven trays ie something to cook pizza on
- Jean (3/5): For over $150 for a double room, this place is dismal. I would not recommend staying there. Substantial rénovations are - Great location Place is really run down. Fan not working, stained bed covers, no window to the outside, light was flickering and eventually shut down. No room ventilation except opening a window onto the shared corridor.
- Michael (8/5): -
- Thomas Martin (9/5): Best value for money and a very comfortable stay all and all - Pods were very tidy and well laid out. Good locker at head of bed, coat hooks, fan etc. very comfortable
Facilities were awesome, cool bar to drink at or hang out front. Downstairs felt like a proper legacy of backpacking / hostels, good open areas with pool table table tennis etc N/A
- Dallas (2/5): - The customer service was not good.
I booked, the check in time said 4pm, check out 10am.
We got to the property and there was a sign on the door said check in closes at 10pm.
Looked on the booking and the fine print at the bottom said check in ends at 11.
We got there and couldn’t check in, we had to go book another hotel 45mins away. They wouldn’t give any refund at all. Terrible experience. We didn’t stay, their rules are so unclear and no budging. They just took the money and told us too bad. Don’t stay here. Lots of other places.
- Brian (10/5): - As stated there was no air conditioning, it was a warm night and had to keep windows in room open along with corridor windows to try and let some breeze in. Also as stated there was a fan, but it did have a timer, so we had to keep waking up to turn the fan back on. Other than that, the lounge and patio was nice area to sit and have some drinks. The room was very clean.
- Marcel (4/5): -
- Alfons (4/5): - De live muziek Vieze kamer, te klein, armoedig, echt verschrikkelijk
- Michael (9/5): Raging Elk is just a good way to be reasonably in a fairly expensive town. - I didn't have breakfast, because we went to the Big Banger Bagel. But we had a lot of fun in the evening, especially playing pool with a lot of Aussies. Our top employee also allowed to us to play for free. Good dude! Everything was pretty good. A little loud about 10:30 when it's bedtime, but it gets better.
- Cheresse (6/5): - It’s good if you want somewhere cheap to stay. It was what we needed it to be. It wasn’t terrible but not amazing either. The beds were decent and clean just the property overall was run down. We would probably stay again but compared to other hostels that are closeish it was lower in the star aspect.
- Cody (10/5): - This was our first time staying in a hostel. We stayed on the private room side as well as the family room side. It is a very unique place thats for sure. Very snowboarding vibes. If you are into fancy hotels this is not your place. I am rating this a five star experience becasue of the price point. First of furmost the staff is very kind and amazing. Everyone is in great spirirts and make you feel like you belong there. Yes this place needs to be updated but we stayed at this place for two nights for the price of one any where else. The kitchen downstairs has everything you need. You can also put your items in the fridge. No it does not have any breakfast options but if you pack your food it works great. We had no problems with cleanliness. Yes the rooms do not have AC. We just opened the window and let the breeze roll in. It is a bit of a party place but at the end where we were staying it was pretty quite for the most part. I have stayed at fancy hotels where the noise was much much worse. Even the guests were very friendly. Would this be my choice to stay in Fernie again? You bet!
- Peter (5/5): -
- Sirach (8/5): -
- Lola (1/5): Terrible - The location. Everything else - it was dirty, the bathrooms were disgusting there was strangers hair in the bathroom, no A/C, super uncomfortable, poor security in the room.
- Gage (10/5): -
- Guy (4/5): - The hotel would be suitable for 25year old backpackers. Fortunately a staff member helped us bring our luggage up the 23 stairs to our room. The amenities were limited to two tiny bars of soap and 2 bath towels. The property is for sale.
- Tamla (6/5): Perfect for young travelers - Location, cheapest in town but still overpriced for quality/facilities. Heaps of potential! Private room was quite hot & loud at night (due to internal bar, should have read that & would also depend what night 😅). Room wasn’t stocked with toilet paper/coffee (a nice staff member got us some TP when we asked) Kitchen lacks basics like oil/salt/paper but was clean. Rooms should come with individual keys, it’s strange that one key opens up all internal.
- Mark (6/5): -
- Victoria (8/5): - Very welcoming staff, fair price, location was great
- Verified traveler (8/5): Solo stay - I was very curious to see a pod-type hotel right here in the Kootenays, and was quite pleased. It's nice to have a comfortable bed for 1 at a budget price, with hotels becoming fairly expensive across the board.
The staff were helpful and chill, and the bar/lounge area was great for a beer and game of pool.
- Dan (9/5): This place to stay, at the value rate, in this 'money' environment? Doesn't get better.... - the room were good value for the price. Shower and toiletries and towels excellent. Open windows to the outside allowed you to vent your own sliding window to your personal preference. My wing was very quiet, I slept well on the firm mattress in the quiet end of the hall, room 26. Cool place for any travellers budget. Breakfast must be had at Mugshot Cafe a few blocks away. Excellent value, excellent hashbrowns - old school. Wifi needs some attention or its operator error??
- Owen (6/5): a fun basic place run by friendly young people - Very basic but that's all they hold out to be. Super nice people. Could be a lot of fun for young people or families. Great common cooking area. Love being in town vs being up on the hill nothing
- David (8/5): -
- Gerald (10/5): - Friendly
- Grace (8/5): - Only allowed individuals 18+ the ability to sit on the nice patio. Inconvenient when you have a family.
- David (8/5): - Affordable stay in an otherwise very expensive town. Staff was friendly and helpful.
- Hlyva (1/5): -
- Peter (10/5): - Helpful staff, good kitchen.
- KA FAI (8/5): - Staffs are nice, the service is great. There are lots of entertainment facilities in the basement room and the outdoor Lounge is a great place to stay with friends at night.
- Lawrence (4/5): - The beds sucked
- Kevin (10/5): - Decent place to stay. God bless.
- Kevin (10/5): - Decent place to stay. God bless.
- Brian (6/5): - Very good price. But very basic. I had to make bed. Lots of stairs. No food service. It’s a hostel not a hotel.
- silvia (6/5): - Overall I enjoyed our stay at the hostel- we stayed in a four bed family room, which was clean (as was the rest of the hostel) beds and bedding were comfy, and the kitchen contained what we needed to make meals. The location is within walking distance of some shops, cafe’s, restaurants. Unfortunately the family pod we stayed in was super hot throughout the night, as I assume the other family pods are as well. +28 Celsius our first night, the small fan in the room provides little relief on its own, and I found keeping the door and window open cooled the room slightly, but, even though the other guests never made me feel unsafe, I just prefer to have a closed door while sleeping, especially with kids in the room also. The temperature was not bearable with the room closed though. For the second night I bought an extension cord, propped the fan in the slightly opened door, barricaded with a chair because that made me feel better and the fan brought in enough cool night air that made the room comfortable for sleeping.
- Dhanya (7/5): Good -
- Patrick (5/5): Passable - The bar is good! Cheap beer! Did not enjoy the inflatable plastic mattress. Sheets don't grip them. Felt like a prison
