Guest Reviews
- Lorraine (1/5): - Nothing Being refused entry
- jane (3/5): Would rather have stayed at a bed and breakfast place. - Close to the river No lift to carry cases up to the top floor. No chef so no food at all. Smoking in the reception by staff.
- robin (1/5): we would like our money back wec.ould not reccomend the star inn at all - room 2 was above the bar thursday evening was very noisy friday evening the noise from the blues brothers who were performing below was so noisy it was totaly unaceptable and we could not even hold a conversation it totally ruind our stay in UPTON ON SEVEN' the television didnt work i spoke to somebody on thursday evening and still had to speak to somebody on friday because it still hadnt been repaired
- Graham (2/5): -
- Leonard (1/5): A bit of a disaster all round. - Cleanliness No breakfast, no remote controller for tv, Wi-Fi password didn’t work, no evening meal, electricity blew first thing in morning so dark bathroom and no ability to make a cuppa.
- Nick (9/5): I very much enjoyed my stay at The Star as I did on my two previous visits. - Breakfast was good. The service was friendly and prompt. The room was clean and very comfortable as was the bed. The internet link was poor I’m afraid. I could only get online on one night via a link through my iPhone. This was not a major spoiler as my reason for being in Upton was the Folk Festival and so I didn’t have an urgent need to be online but it was a nuisance.
- Philip (10/5): - The staff very friendly room very comfatable and clean Nothing
- Peter (7/5): -
- nick (8/5): very good,friendly area -
- Nigel (8/5): -
- Catherine (7/5): -
- Gavin (8/5): Friendly staff and locals. - Great location great staff. Very friendly bar area. There was no food currently being served.
- Helen (7/5): Lovely Stay - Location was great and staff friendly The creaky floor
- Kathy (3/5): - Location Attitude of staff (male)
No breakfast. Rooms were not value for money and were not very clean.
- Caroline (1/5): Dreadful - Good location for my needs Dreadful staff no one available to check in I had to go and find them then they were off hand
No toilet roll in bathroom took me 10 mins to find staff Whi didnt know wherever was kept
No hot water in evening or first thing
Expensive stay for a cold shower !!!
I would not recommend in fact take it off your site !!!
- James (4/5): Very disappointing - Good location in centre of town close to river and restaurants. Room was clean and staff Friendly. We booked a deluxe king room. When we were given the room we found it had not been serviced so we had to accept a family room with a smaller double bed. The facilities were basic and not what I would describe as deluxe. The room was could throughout our stay even with the radiator turn on full. I don’t know whether there was hot water as the hot tap still ran cold after several minutes. Fortunately there was a (basic) electric shower. There was a spotlight directly outside our room on the curtains let in light so made sleeping initially difficult until this was eventually turned off. I was then woken at 1.30 AM by someone hammering on the front door to obtain entry. The restaurant is permanently closed. The ‘tea and coffee maker’ is four Tetley teabags and some sachets of Nescafé. This is not a £155 experience and would not stay again
- Sandra (10/5): -
- Thomas Kilmartin (9/5): An enjoyable weekend - Review posted elsewhere
- Kathy (2/5): Avoid - Upton on Severn is lovely. The lady who checked us in was lovely too. Easy checking from 12pm. I paid for 2 rooms. One was £70 more expensive but was identical to the other room. Toilet in one room continuously flushing. No breakfast. No river view as stated in room details. TV not working.
Forgive all of this, could see they were short-staffed BUT, response when I raised concerns was really annoying and rude from the bloke ( no idea what his role was):
The toilet: "You need to put your hand in the cistern and pull it up! " (Refused to do this and they did rectify the problem)
The room: "It is Booking.coms fault. They keep doing us over with putting false information on."
The TV: "Must be the batteries" (DId nothing to rectify this)
Cost of room: " Well you will probably be spending that at the festival, "after agreeing that the rooms were identical (No refund given or upgrade offered)
Then, got a rant about why I should spend money at the pub and not the festival.
Honestly, worst place I have ever stayed because of the attitude of that bloke. He also asked me if Lulu , who performed at the festival was still "fit".
No apologies given. Also, took the money out of my account 3 days before we arrived despite free cancellation policy up to 24 hours before.

- Allen (8/5): Will be back next year - Great Location , steep stairs
- david (10/5): -
- Denise (7/5): Pleasant stay - Bed was super comfy.. shower was good .. location excellent Few things bit off.. ceiling lights and tv didnt work.. bathroom down needs shaving to shut.. noisy air-conditioning unit outside room 3 on the outside wall
- Glenn (3/5): Syat was spoiled by loud music until midnight - Nice room with antique furniture Stayed on a Saturday night and there was live music and noise until midnight
Shower wasn't that powerful
Be aware that there is no parking
- Donna (7/5): -
- Spooner (8/5): -
- Steven (8/5): Comfortable strange no staff but not too bad - Location No breakfast
- David (8/5): A great place to stay - It is well located not far from the River Severn and near the so-called “Pepperpot” church tower. The staff were extremely helpful in facilitating my early arrival (due to a wedding). The room was clean, neat and tidy, although the furniture was a bit dated and tired looking. The en suite, however, was modern and spacious. There was a kettle with tea and coffee-making facilities in the room. The bed was extremely comfortable and I had a great night’s sleep. No breakfast provision when I was there, although it may perhaps be available at the weekend.
- Angie (8/5): Very good - The stay was really comfortable. The staff were very busy with the weekend festival, but you couldn't fault how they tried to accommodate everyone. The shower didn't work very well. It was fold more often than hot
- Jeremy (8/5): The restaurant was closed all the time otherwise enjoyed the stay - Very good position No staff to service the room ought to get the television working. Outside the hotel the seating area on the pavement was covered in cigarette ends
- Smith (9/5): Very good - Clean rooms Music till 10-30pm ish but excellent after
- Rachel (8/5): Beautiful comfortable room - Beautiful clean room, we stayed here after a wedding, when we got back just before 10 there was a band playing in the bar below but it finished at a reasonable time and actually didn't bother us.(May have been the wine we'd consumed) The bed was very comfortable and the facilities were all we required.style very in keeping with the building and in a beautiful area.
- Giuseppe (7/5): Good -
- Thomas (10/5): A GOOD TIME IN UPTON ON SEVERN - Breakfast good, had to pay on the day. The bar was good. Beds fine room spacious enough for us. We will go again No car parking and the public ones were not many.
- Jeannette (8/5): Good location and good value. - Very convenient location for the festival everything on the doorstep really. Had one room key for 3 people so had to leave it at reception, that was fine, except reception quite often was not manned so had to wait or go and find someone if one of us needed to go to our room. Not organised at all.
- Gary (8/5): Very good -
- Caroline (7/5): Good -
- Michelle (10/5): Perfect - Lovely central location , fab bar In garden Nothing
- Mark (10/5): Perfect stay, and good value - Perfect location, in the heart of the town.
- Andrew (6/5): Basic but the important things were fair - Good site No table chair
- Justin (2/5): We left early - Great location There was no ventilation on the room and it was loud
- Michael (7/5): Good -
- Nick (7/5): Good - Bed was nice and comfy, and the location was convenient. Room was nice and clean.
- Lee (4/5): Disappointing -
- Tim (1/5): Bad -
- Jonathan (10/5): Exceptional -
- Sandra (5/5): Needs updating , very noisy until early hours of the morning - Near the venue Old and worn , very loud music from the bar until 2 and then still a lot of noise with the people still in there chatting . They should definitely advertise this if renting rooms, no sleep at all
- Andrew (4/5): Won’t to staying there again or recommending to others. - No breakfast included. Location in the heart of a noisy area of a little town. Lots of noisy drinkers late into the early hours of the morning. Reception poor. Individual in charge didn’t appear to know what was going on. At the time of booking in he told us that the person who should be doing the job was having a shower - bizarre! Loud noise ( music and communal singing) from the downstairs bar continued well past 1am so impossible to get to sleep. Even when the singing stopped and the music quietened, still an unacceptable level of noise continued. As far as I’m aware there was no organised event at the Star Inn that night.
- Rachel (8/5): Very good -
- Beverley (9/5): Superb -
- Robert (3/5): Poor - Breakfast wasn’t offered or included - rooms are above the bar and live music continued until gone midnight which was far to loud to even hear the TV in the room.
- Abi (3/5): Disappointing and over priced. - The location. There was poor service at reception and they failed to tell us about the fob system. The room (No3) is directly above the pub. Karaoke lasted into the early hours, I could even hear people reading through the book to choose their song. Very little sleep, in a very hot room. This should be reflected in the price.
- Lesley (8/5): Good location, comfy bed - Good location
- Caroline (7/5): A very pleasant stay at The Star Inn and Upton-upon-Severn is a lovely little riverside town. - Creaking floor-boards above Room 9 disturbed our sleep unfortunately.
No on-site parking sadly - although the 5 minute walk to a public car park was easy enough carrying light luggage, along with the reasonable £4 for 24hrs parking charge.
These misfortunate things would not deter us from staying there again though.
- John (8/5): Very good -
- Joanne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Heather (7/5): It was very clean, basic room in a central location and although the issues with the bed and window it was an ideal loca - My partner is not able to walk far with a fracture in his back so it was a central location for watching Morris dancing at the folk festival enabling him to return if needed. It was clean, the duvet was cosy and warm. It had towels and toiletries. Reception showed us to our room and even offered to take our bag to our room. The bed was hard. The window didn’t close
Properly and so could hear everything and every word people were saying outside. Even though it was central I don’t think it was worth £155 for the night.
- Ross (2/5): Very poor - Location
- David (10/5): Exceptional -
- Carol (1/5): It was basically a bed for the night but would not stay again - No breakfast available or any food at all due to I was told prior chef problems Creaky floors and able to hear everything from the next room
- Kenneth (1/5): Worst hotel experience ever and I will say this on every social media - Nothing No breakfast no parking no bedside lights in room
- White (6/5): Pleasant - Room was nice and clean TV didn't work, WiFi was non-existent.
- Adam (10/5): Exceptional -
- Melissa (10/5): Exceptional - Location friendly staff room beautifully decorated bed lovley and comfy. Our trip was perfect .
- Christopher (8/5): Very good -
- Carla (8/5): Very good - Awesome staff in particular young Callum, John and Jodie.
- Lisa (6/5): Lovely place for a nights stopover - Good location No food options
- Philip (8/5): Very good -
- Aaron (6/5): Pleasant - Great location.
- John (4/5): Disappointing -
- Neil (2/5): dismal, in need of modernisation - i did not stay in the room
the room was very dark and old
there was a constant cold draft due a broken sash window that didn’t close at all
there was no hot water in the room so couldn’t shower despite running the shower for 25 mins the water remained chillingly cold, same with the water in the hand basin which never heated up either.
i advised the girl on reception who attempted to offer me an alternative room & advised that the hotel was undergoing room modernisation & i was advised to speak to the owner the next day.
when i spoke to said guy next day he had been advised that i hadn’t stayed & explained that the rooms were being installed with an electric shower & that they had taken rooms off availability on booking.com but that they had honoured my booking as i had already made it in advance even though all other rooms had been closed down.
i was advised that i would receive a full refund & another lady would contact me to arrange this but i am still waiting for the call.
After travelling 5 and a half hours to get to this hotel & paying upfront through booking.com i was not expecting this kind of service or quality of accommodation.
we were lucky in that people who attended the same event as i could offer us alternative sleeping for the night so that we did not have to stay in this hotel, however i am still £120 out of pocket
- Sandra (6/5): Comfortable good location for our particular needs - Good location, helpful, friendly staff, clean bedroom and bathroom, tea and coffee making No wi-fi (due to the Festival they said), no hotel lounge area only in the pub bar, bathroom a very tight squeeze indeed with the shower within the very narrow bath. Very tired appearance, (carpets and furniture) well overdue a spruce up all round I would say
- Susan (8/5): Beautiful location and so friendly, felt more like a guest at a friend's home than at a hotel. - Room was lovely and staff were so friendly. Only slight quip was water in shower took a while to heat up. But plenty towels and toiletries provider that this was just a very minor issue.
- Sandra (9/5): Nice , clean ,staff were lovely. We were told we would need to run the water for it to get hot and we did for about 5 mi - Location Didn’t always have hot water
- Tina (9/5): Superb -
- Tina (9/5): Superb -
- Rebecca (1/5): Awful - It's in a very nice town. No hot water, no wifi, beds didn't have duvets and we had to take them from another room. No staff to deal with it.
- Carole (8/5): A fun weekend away at The Star - We enjoyed our stay at the Star and enjoyed the Minge festival although not in fancy dress like the Landlord and staff and many locals that went all out :-) The acts were really good, disappointed that I missed the ones in the evening but there is always next year. Gathan doing three sets, Bruno Mars, RnB and Michael Jackson was outstanding.
Its a great central location and breakie was lovely too. Hats off to you, you all keep up the good work and see you soon (Upton upon Severn has a special place in my heart).
- Ciaran (3/5): disappointing - the location was very pretty My hotel room had no hot water for the entire stay, there is no parking near the hotel, the bar had closed when I returned at 10:30pm and the entire hotel was empty and deserted when I left at 7:00am the next morning without breakfast
- Nina (10/5): Friendly staff and lovely atmosphere - The staff are so friendly and the entertainment was fab! N/A
- Jo (5/5): Want a good night's sleep? Don't stay here. - There was no breakfast Very noisy late at night and in the morning from 5am.
- Jean (8/5): Enjoyed our stay, would stay again, but different room. - Excellent location couldn’t be better Would have preferred twin beds facing river, room 12 was small with no view. Needs new mattress.
- Sue (8/5): Very good -
- Rachel (10/5): Friendly environment, beautiful place. - Beautiful pub/hotel.
- Janet (1/5): Disappointed - Nothing Absolute shambles. Was booked up for 20th July. On 19th at about 6.00p.m.received a phone call to say there was no hot water in the room. Said would be willing to have room at a discount without hot water because it was only for one night. Phoned back and they said there were no floor boards or carpet in the room. They told me to phone Booking.com to cancel room. Booking.com said I had to get confirmation off Star Hotel or I would have to pay £304. No real help from either.
- Alison (7/5): Good -
- Graham (2/5): We found the Star Inn to be poor value for money, uncomfortable and lacking standard facilities. - It was close to the event we were visiting. It was expensive compared to other accommodation in the area. There was no designated parking at the pub. We had to use on street parking or a pay carpark nearby. Shower was too hot to use and not controllable. No hairdryer. Bed was very uncomfortable- could feel the bedsprings! We were given room which was up 3 flights of stairs even though there were hardly any other residents. There was no breakfast. The room was not serviced. Room was very noisy due to a generator or aircon unit below our window which cycled throught the night. Also music from nearby venues played until 2am on our 2nd night.
- Dale (8/5): Generally really nice but affected my my above comments - Location Didn't do breakfast or food and the shower was poor. In fact after cycling all day I had to put up with a cold shower. Also the only WiFi was in the rear bar downstairs and none in room.
- Mark (1/5): Bad -
- Christopher (8/5): Very good - Staff were very helpful and the room was quite nice. Good location. No food available and no breakfast so I thought the price a little high.
Well pissed bloke in the bar, but I suppose this can happen anywhere
- Nicola (6/5): Pleasant -
- Jemma (2/5): Unfortunately I wouldn't return here - There was no food supplied at the premises as there were no staff / chef to open the restaurant. On arrival we were advised that there were only 2 rooms booked in, however they put us in room 1, right over the pub / bar. on 2 nights the noise wasnt too late, however the Friday and Saturday the loud music, karaoke and people sat outside the front was relentless until 1am. We couldnt get any sleep, and as we were staying for work in the area, this very much spoilt our time here.
There was no working TV in the room, advised that it needed replacing.
Room was only made up after the first night, apparently the cleaner phoned in sick. the other days we had to go to the local shop to get tea, coffee and milk. The bed and pillows were very soft, but i know this is often a personal choice.
No breakfast or other meals available at the premises.
- Alan (8/5): would go back - nice old fashioned place but no meals let it down a bit , but would defo go back no meals available at the time
- Philippa (8/5): Very good -
- Roger (7/5): Good -
- Deborah (4/5): Very basic for £173 per night for twin room. - Good location. Dated, unloved, basic.
- Moses (2/5): Very poor hotel for the amount money I paid - No reception when arrived very poor rooms The town
- David (8/5): Great stay in a nice location near the river - Great location close to the river , bars and restaurants. Very friendly and welcoming staff.
- Jon (10/5): Exceptional - Great location and rooms good size for a perfect stay in Upton
- Mike (2/5): Very poor -
