All are located in the west wing of the early 20th Century part of the building. • Aloisia (10/5): Brilliant weekend stay. - This was our second stay at Grey Friars and we loved it as much as our first. We got engaged there and this stay was our first anniversary. We love how curtious and knowledgeable the staff are. The rooms and facilities are exceptional. The bed was so comfortable and the bathroom was just amazing. We had a lovely meal and to top everything off we had chocolate truffles to welcome us for our anniversary. I will definitely come back again for another celebration. Nothing everything was on point.

Schöner hoteleigener, abgeschlossener Parkplatz hinter dem Hotel über eine Seitenstraße erreichbar. Das Hotel ist in der falschen Stadt. Colcester ist leider nicht sehr sehenswert.

Lovely fire in the bar and had an excellent bar snack. The barman Blake was really welcoming and gave exceptional service. Our only disappointment was the cooked English breakfast. My over easy eggs were cooked until they were solid and the bacon was exceptionally salty. The fresh orange juice was excellent as was the honeydew melon. The breakfast staff very lovely and offered to cook me another breakfast. I declined as we were in a rush to get away but the offer was appreciated. It was our second stay and we would return as it is a lovely peaceful hotel. Only the cooked breakfast was below standard

• Daniel (6/5): Adequate to Great depending on Staff and Room. - The location is amazing, it was our second time staying here and you can't beat the location. The staff were nice enough. Our first stay here was so lovely (room 1, jnr suit) we decided to come back, but the second time around was not so comfortable. We spent a little extra on an "upgraded" to the split level suite, and to be honest it felt cramped and more like a dark bunker, and after a 3hr drive, more importantly, no bath. We asked at reception about rooms with baths and we told only a £75 upgrade to a king suit was going to get us what we wanted. In the end they agreed to match the Booking.com price which meant a £40 upgrade fee. So now we are in the "luxury" The Coach House Suite. It does have a bath, but there is a leak in the drain so your bath slowly goes down, and facing the street, you have the road noise. 2 upgrades later and my wife and I are still wishing we were in the more comfortable jnr suit. The first time we stayed we didn't have breakfast, but this time we thought we would treat ourselves and when booking the room the, price for the breakfast of £24, which appeared a little spicy when you see on the menu card that if you just pay on the day most of the dishes were £16+tea or coffee. And the last winge is that I forgot my razor and went to reception for a courtesy razor and they had them, the same cheap disposables as everywhere else, but not gratis, £2.50. they are even free at the holiday inn... I've never been charged for a courtesy item before in 100s of hotels. So all in all, if you are lucky, to get the right staff on that shift, the right room at the right price, and you go out for breakfast this is great, if you don't get these things you have an adequate hotel in a great location.

• Gareth (2/5): I don’t usually complain but I want my money back it was that bad and disappointing! - Liked the duplex room. Found staff very unwelcoming. The room was unbelievably hot that we had to sleep on the bathroom floor because the aircon wasn’t working. Had breakfast included but waited at the breakfast room entrance 10 mins so decided to seat ourselves because nobody approached us and sat on the only table available, they had all be used and not one had been cleared up. Then when we see staff she didn’t even acknowledge us until 30 mins after sitting down, breakfast then came out another 20 mins later and it was probably the worst breakfast we’d ever had, we wished we’d gone McDonald’s for breakfast…. Tables still hadn’t been cleared by the time we’d left the breakfast room. Reception wasn’t very polite on leaving either. I want my money back!

They were overrpolite. The bar area, dining room and restaurant were z little cold especially when seated by an open door.with no option but to stznd outside and wait because the staff were sliw and did nog clear unnecessary tables.i had to complain about dust in my room also.

• John (10/5): Truly exceptional stay in the centre of town with parking. - From the moment we entered the secure car park and saw the grounds we knew we were somewhere special. Staff were an excellent all round team nothing was too much trouble. Room way above expectations, we paid more than usual but it was well worth it, excellent value. Breakfast was served in a relaxed manner wonderful choices well prepared and served. The whole experience was very enjoyable. Having to come home the stay was so enjoyable we did't want to leave but had to return to reality.

• Clara (9/5): - A lovely hotel and a brilliant location. Friendly helpful staff. The only slight criticism would be that it states breakfast is until 9.30am week days. We wnt down just after 9am and the fruit juices had been put away so we kept having to ask for them. Id also prefer if the continental items were self service.

• Christine (8/5): Well placed, impressive building, but let down by some details. - Great location, on the High Street but quiet, and close to Castle Park, museums and art galleries. Bus from main station stops outside. Impressive building with high ceilings and good quality furnishing. Food was good, though menu choice fairly limited for size of hotel. Taking advantage of discounts, got a competitive rate for B&B while still able to alter dates and occupancy at short notice. Staff were helpful but thin on the ground - had to search out a server to order bar food. Stayed in room 2 (a junior suite) which was spacious and well equipped but had awkward features including wardrobe rail well above head height, and a set of stone (marble effect) steps down from bedroom to bathroom. While these were well lit and have handrails, as an older traveller this is hazard I see as more significant than the same number of carpeted steps in a public corridor. I would have liked to know about it in advance.

• Mark (10/5): Lovely elegant hotel in central Colchester - A lovely old interesting building that had been updated in a sympathetic way. The staff were excellent. The manager came round when we were having breakfast to check that everyone was happy, and they also let me keep my car in the car park for several hours after we checked out which was really useful. Our room was huge with a palatial bathroom, and the location for Central Colchester was excellent. We asked for a room at the back of the property and this was really quiet. The bed was large and comfortable and we got a good night’s sleep. Considering the quality of the accommodation the price we paid was good value. There was nothing we disliked.

There were lots of nice little touches and we were really pleasantly surprised with the whole stay. Would 100% recommend and would stay again if we ever came back! • David (9/5): GreyFriars - superb! - GreyFriars is superb, 5 stars. Beautifully appointed, clean, quiet, comfortable,correctly located in the centre of town. Excellent breakfast, parking on site, a real luxury place to stay and very good value. Thankyou. Only one thing, the smoke alarm above the bed had a bright light that lit up the room during the night. We were assured that this was in the process of being corrected by a replacement program.

The quality of breakfast was of very high quality. Lack of soap or handwash in the bathroom. We usually travel with our own which wasn't a problem but surprising given the toileteries in the shower. Another niggle is the wait for service at breakfast. The staff were very stretched during breakfast service - over the Easter weekend with some inexperienced staff. It wouid be preferable for all if guests were able to serve themselves to cereals, fruit and yoghurts, in addition to juices, in busy times. This would leave staff to take orders for tea/coffee and other individual needs as well as the hot breakfasts. Guests waited more than 10-15 minutes for tea/coffee and then longer for other parts of the service. As it was a weekend this wasn't criticial but worth the management considering this in the future.

• Fiona (10/5): A wonderful and relaxing place to stay, with friendly, helpful staff. - It’s a really lovely place to stay, particularly if you want to be spoilt with good service. I had breakfast included which was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend Greyfriars as a special place to stay and eat. No soap at the bathroom sink although shower was adjacent so relatively easy to reach for the shower gel.
