• Javier (10/5): Blown away by the unique experience - We were blown away by how unique the whole experience was and how hospitable the hotel staff was. We were given slippers and traditional robes when we arrived and our luggage was carried to the room for us. Our room was very quaint with a whole tea setup prepared at the table. The dinner was an incredible, elaborate experience that we weren’t expecting. The gardens were beautiful and the hot springs were so relaxing.

The staff was so accomodating--it was our first experience at a traditional ryokan, and the staff was very helpful in explaining various customs. They made us feel very at home. The free shuttle to and from the station was very convenient and easy to reserve. The check-in and check-out processes were easy and pleasant as well, with matcha and sweets provided at check-in as an opportunity to rest and look out on the garden. Our room was gorgeous, with a stunning view of the mountains, and sleeping on the tatami was extremely comfortable. We reserved the private onsen both nights of our stay (for a small fee) and that was also a simple and convenient process. Finally, breakfast was amazing--all of the numerous dishes were delicious and beautifully prepared. Overall, it was a truly magical experience staying at Houshi Ryokan. We left this morning and already want to go back! ありがとうございました!
• ATSUKO (8/5): - 古いながらも、風情があり、隅々まで行き届いていました。 お風呂も、脱衣所も清潔でとても良かったです。 ただ、粟津温泉街の寂れ具合にはびっくりしました。 ちょっと軽く何か食べたくても、何もありません。 連泊で旅館の晩ごはんは重たいので、軽めのカフェなど併設されているととてもありがたいです。

• petabu (6/5): Dates and dirty room, yet nice overall property - I expected the traditional Ryoken to be dated in a historical way, however I was disappointed when it seemed dated in a 1970’s way. The room itself was very large and styled with usual Ryoken decor, yet the floors had stain marks, walls had dirty splash marks and the bathroom had 1970’s styling. I was expecting a more traditional feel to the room. The center garden was devine and the staff were friendly. Breakfast provided was delicious and offered a good selection. Glad I stayed at the property although I wouldn’t travel back there.

• Verified traveler (6/5): 1300년 역사의 흔적은 어디에.. 평범하고 산만한 료칸 - 결제단계에서 서비스 이용료 및 세금 명목으로 추가 금액이 굉장히 많이 붙네요. 호텔닷컴에 문의하니 료칸이 가져가는 돈이랍니다. 그럼 처음부터 그 가격을 제시하지.. 상술인지 뭔지, 좀 이해가 안되고 기분이 나빴습니다. 하여간 1300년된 료칸이 궁금해 일단 결제하고 이틀을 묵어보니, 1300년의 흔적을 담은 고풍스러움이나 깊이를 느낄만한 부분은 없습니다. 작은 정원 주위로 구관과 신관이 빙 둘러싼 형태의 좀 낡고 산만한, 그저 평범하고 무난한 료칸이었습니다. 정 1300년된 료칸이 궁금하다면 하루정도 머물면 적당하고요. 고마츠에 훨씬 시설 좋고 가성비 좋은 료칸이 많으니 잘 찾아보시고 묵기를 추천합니다.

• dscor (10/5): Amazing, unique experience - This was a really special experience, unlike anything I've encountered in the West. It's serene and relaxing, with amazing public baths. It's off the beaten path and not designed for Westerners, so go with an open mind and Google Translate. It was a welcoming, warm experience and I highly recommend it.
• Bianca (8/5): Traditional Ryokan with Onsen - This is an amazing place, and if you stay as a family where some of you would like to visit an onsen, this hotel provides a great opportunity to stay in a traditional Ryokan with Onsen facilities. You will also get a lift to and from the station if you get in touch with the hotel beforehand. There is a lovely walk to some shrines nearby. The traditional breakfast is also a great experience.
• 268madeleineh (10/5): Fantastic! - We had an absolute wonderful stay here! It was like walking in to a fairy take when we arrived, the warmest greeting I've ever enjoyed. Room was traditional, spacious and with everything you could possibly need, and then some. Everything just msgically seemed to be set up when you needed it! Onsen had one indoor section, and one outdoor. We had a traditional japanese meal one evening. This was a great experience that we will remember forever. Unusual for us, but isn't that exactly what you're looking for when travelling? There are no words to express the high level of service. Top class! The staffs English is way better than my Japanese. :) Highly recommend!

Sure, the place has not been refurbished recently but that really is not an issue. Everything feels authentic. We had the traditional dinner and breakfast which I would highly recommend for a chance to try some genuine japanese food. The onsen was lovely for relaxation.

We added dinner and family bath. The dinner was so delicouse and family bath was also very nice. The most impressive thing was the tea ceremony. I am very satisfied with my experience in Ryokan.

• Von1955 (6/5): Beautiful gardens - This ryokan was pleasant but somewhat lacking. The gardens and Onsen were very good. The staff were helpful and did everything they could to help. The food was the biggest disappointment. We travel as a group of 6 with 2 young children and we all love the breakfast and dinners served Japanese style and look forward to new tastes and flavors but in this instance we found there was very little we liked. It was such a shame as the history of this hotel is long and interesting.
• Daniel (10/5): Excellent rapport qualité/prix - Excellent séjour: hôtel confortable et très propre; chambre spacieuse; repas copieux et délicieux; excellente hospitalité, etc. Je suis arrivé avant le check-in et ai pu y déposer mes affaires. On m'a demandé où je comptais aller en attendant, et comme je comptais me rendre au village culturel Yunokuni no Mori: on m'a donné un billet d'entrée (en plus de me suggérer d'autres lieux à proximité)! Il y a divers lieux intéressants dans les environs (notamment le temple Natadera), etc. Dans l’hôtel, il y a bien sûr un onsen (3 bains intérieurs et 1 extérieur). Et puis il y a aussi le plaisir de séjourner dans un hôtel en service depuis 1300 ans, et toujours géré par la même famille! C'est très rare; et en prenant ça en compte: le séjour est plutôt bon marché, en fait! Sur le départ, je suis tombé par hasard sur la propriétaire - qui a appelé son père, avec qui j'ai longuement discuté autours d'un café, puis d'un autre: personne super intéressante et très humble. Au départ, j'ai profité d'une navette gratuite pour la gare de Kaga Onsen! Excellent rapport qualité/prix.

• Dawnetta (4/5): A one star hotel for a five star price - I was so disappointed in this hotel. The pictures look amazing! But they only apply to the rooms on the first floor. The rest of the hotel is run down and smells bad. I felt like I was paying a five star price for a one star hotel. If you want to say that you stayed in one of the oldest hotels to check off of your bucket list, then stay here. Otherwise I wouldn't recommend it. This was not the Japanese experience I thought I was paying for.

• CarolPerreau (2/5): Sad experience - The first disappointing experience of our visit was the promised welcome tea ceremony- this in fact was being ushered to sit on indoor steps looking at the garden and being given a cup of matcha- no ceremony involved Then we were taken to our room first stopping with the matriarch who gave us traditional robes. We had no idea of the appropriate way to wear these or when and had to google this. A helpful English instruction sheet was provided on the use of the onsen and an instruction could easily have been incorporated Then we were shown to our ground floor room with a beautiful garden and pond area just outside The first thing that we noticed was the really unpleasant smell in the room- like someone had cooked turnips in there As it was the middle of the heatwave we were not going to use the Onsen and had booked a room with a private bathroom- the shower didn’t work, the bath was sunken in the floor and was difficult to get in and the only option was to stand and pour water out of a bucket over ourselves- the fixtures hadn’t been updated since the 50’s The bathroom itself was disgusting dirty and mouldy Our dinner and breakfast were interesting- plentiful and nicely done. The venue had no atmosphere- a big dinning hall with no decor The futons were very thin so the sleep wasn’t comfortable- the air conditioning inadequate even with a fan. The doors to the garden had to be closed to keep out ferocious mosquitoes leaving the smelly air. The hall carpet is rotting and stained The only area that’s not sad and tired is the gift shop This ryokan needs a serious update or it too will be abandoned like several other establishments in the village around it. We certainly would not recommend this Ryokan even if it is the oldest which is very sad.

You won’t get a more Japanese experience than this. Sleep on a futon, drink matcha tea - it’s great. I’m pleased I went. Having tried the very adventurous multi-course dinner on my first night and a breakfast (see photos), I decided to forgo any more meals in the ryokan. I am more than eager to try new foods, but there is no English explanation of anything which makes eating raw unidentifiable animals and fish again and again and again a little concerning and really unappetising! My criticism would be that not one of the staff spoke any English at all, which does make things a bit tricky. When I arrived an hour before check in they wouldn’t speak to me at all, I had to just wait awkwardly. The rooms were very tired - the carpet in room 883 was really stained and not very nice considering you have to walk bare foot. The cushions and chairs were dirty too. The exterior of the building is stained too, everything looks a bit dirty. Unfortunately there was also a lot of construction work outside so sitting pondering life and feeling zen in my room wasn’t really possibly Tip: 1. steal out an additional mattress for your futon to make it a bit more comfortable, otherwise you can feel the floor! 2. There is a great bakery down the road and also a small convenience store! I suggest buying some supplies on day one just in case you don’t enjoy the meals as much as you had hoped.

• jesse (8/5): 1300 year old Hotel - This 46th generation owned Ryokan has an amazing history & a wonderful onsen! The outdoor bath is serene and blissful. The overall condition of the hotel however is in a bit of disrepair. Worth every penney for the experience - but the hotel is a bit tired. Room however was very good and traditional Japenese breakfast a reare experience.
• Delmartian207 (10/5): Beautiful Rooms. Wonderful Onsen. Great Service - Room 812 was very comfortable and fit my family of 5 very comfortably. The patio with doors to the garden was a nice addition and a good place to relax while they're making the beds. The dinner service was excellent and we were always very full, although the service was a bit slow on a very busy holiday weekend. The onsen was excellent. My only complaint is that the futons were a bit hard .
• zenski38 (10/5): The highest form of kindness - The stay in a Ryokan is a great oriental experience. It is a total immersion in the traditional Japanese culture with tasty food and very nice staff. Try the onsen, it will surprise you. Absolutely recommendable!
• divenuts (10/5): traditional ryokan and hot spring experience - we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hoshi. yes there's a few bits of carpet that need replacing here and there and some paint touch ups but we had such a great experience, received such great service, enjoyed the hot spring baths and our delightful room so much, the little imperfections were easy to forget. we stayed in a lovely traditional room right on the garden, it was spacious and very pretty. we received gracious service and excellent food each night and each breakfast in our private dinning room (i'm not a big fan of traditional japanese breakfast but my wife is, so i just went with the flow). we had several private baths and eventually took the plunge and went to the communal baths as well, we especially liked the outdoor baths in the cold weather. the atmosphere, the surroundings and decor were all delightful, we felt truly immersed in old world Japan. day trips to local towns and temples provided us with a nice glimpse into rural life and scenery. thoroughly recommended for the japanophile, not recommended for those who seek western amenities and familiar accommodations.
• Felix_CGN (8/5): A challenge in some ways for Westerners, but a unique experience - We had seen the mini-documentary on this place on Vimeo and were very curious to check it out. We stayed in a traditional room (apparently there are also "Modern" ones in a separate 7 story building next to the older complex - we never went there though). We slept on tatami mats on the floor, which is more comfortable than expected but - alas - not as comfortable as a western bed. As others have remarked, some parts appear dated and could use some repairs, including the Koh stage, which had a sad, depressing aura to it. Maybe this looks better in the summer? If you are inside the baths or the rooms, it is not really bothersome though. The main challenges are the food and generally communication. There are no menus or explanations in English (or indeed in latin characters), and most staff speaks no English. They do however all have smartphones with translation apps, and are eager to help. Nevertheless, it was a great experience and I would not hesitate to recommend it for a brief stay.
• Francois (10/5): The 1300 years old hotel - A really amazing hotel that gives you the tradition of Japan. It's been running since 1300 years and own by the same family since it's opening. All the chambers seems to have a view on the inner garden, which is absolutely beautiful and the view of the night sky in the onsen is also great. The only little "bad" thing is that none of the staff speaks english. So be prepared to mimic a lot :)!
• GoPlaces318715 (8/5): Friendly family run ryokan - Reading the reviews, it seemed hit or miss but I wanted to visit this old establishment. Yes, it's old...I mean, 1300 years old. It's been expanded and is huge. Does it need some fixing up? Yes, but I've been to plenty of regular hotels that have way more wear and tear and only decades old, not centuries. Anyway, the people working here were very nice and accommodating!!! There's very little English but they try their best. The owner or staff come out to greet any guests coming in. Upon check in, I was taken to room with a view of the gardens for the traditional tea service...not a ceremony. I was in room 103 which was lovely with a private deck over the koi pond. It also had a private bath and toilet along with a flat screen TV and refrigerator. On the table was a tea set with green tea and snacks to enjoy before your soak. After they made my bed later that evening, they refreshed my tea service and added another kind of tea. This Ryokan has an indoor and outdoor onsen for each sex. The facilities are nice but this was my first so I can't compare. The place is huge and walking around inside, you'll see plenty of art. The area is known for their arts and crafts. There's an arts and crafts village about 20 minutes walking distance. Outside the garden is serene and a pleasure to wander around in. Additional info: I didn't eat at the ryokan but there is an izakaya around the left of the ryokan (good luck as there's no English and no pictures) and a sushi place down the street to the right. There's also a grocery store and a couple convenience stores also to the right. They have a shuttle to/from the Awazu station. Contact them for available times as you need to reserve this. I came in too early so I took a taxi which was 1480 yen. They'll also shuttle you to the craft village nearby.
• sanghop126 (4/5): Good service very tired everything else - Stayed at room 812 which is the largest and grandest room in the property. Personal attendant was very kind and professional but everything is mediocre at best. Food quality and presentation was nothing special and facility needs serious updates. Garden looked very tired and building need serious updates. Wifi only works in lobby and public bath area. It's very hard to say but I would not recommend this place.
• Cholmley (8/5): A ryokan to remember - I read the recent negative reviews of Hoshi the day before my husband and I were to arrive there and to say I panicked is an understatement. I tried to cancel, but couldn't do so without a 100% penalty. So we took the train to Kaga Onsen and were picked up promptly by the hotel shuttle and ferried to the ryokan. It was wonderful. Our room on the 8th floor was apartment-like and had a splendid view of the town. No, it wasn't polished and perfect--I noticed nicks in the screens and a hole in the upholstery of one chair, but frankly, it made little difference to our enjoyment. There isn't wifi in the room, but if you must log on, it works perfectly well in the lobby. Hoshi is not the Hyatt, but then again, no one at the Hyatt is serving us tea. The food was excellent, albeit challenging if you don't like fish or items on your plate that you don't recognise; you either rise to the occasion or don't eat. We ate and we were impressed. Yes, the dining room is huge, but so what. The ryokan itself is very large and caters to a thoroughly Japanese clientele (which is probably why almost no one speaks English). It's different. That's what makes it an experience you won't get anywhere else. However, I do agree that the karaoke bar should be avoided as it's expensive as well as dull. The communal bath is not to be missed, though. We stayed in two ryokans during our trip to Japan and Hoshi was the better of the two and similar in price. I'm so glad we didn't cancel.

• kcspence (4/5): Worn and tired. Exceedingly poor value. - I suspect this must be the lowest point in Hoshi's long history. It desperately needs thorough remodeling and professional management. Carpets in hallways and other public areas are worn and horribly stained, threadbare in places. Meals are served in a large, non-descript hall, in a slap-the-plates-down-when-we-please fashion. The quality of the food is mediocre. The ceiling in the otherwise enjoyable onsen is badly stained with mold. Although one doesn't expect Finnish standards of construction in a sauna in Japan, a ceiling of manufactured tiles, like one finds in an office, is not only inappropriate, but unhealthy, inviting off-gassing in the heat. The hallways are a confusing, endless up-down-and-around rabbit warren. The staff is friendly, but seemingly indifferent, and lacking in initiative and common sense. The cafe and bar were unused on the Saturday night we stayed, a handful of guests visiting the karaoke lounge for an evening drink. There were holes in the shoji panels in our room, and the windows overlooking the garden lacked screens, allowing mosquitos entry. On the plus side, the welcoming tea and wagashi were pleasant and the garden is pleasing. We were keenly disappointed in what we were hoping would be a quintessential experience of Japanese hospitality, charm, and grace. When the pond koi seem to be the happiest creatures in the place, you can surely do better elsewhere for $300 per night. Stay away.
• Nakedcrib (6/5): Traditional ryokan experience - This hotel definitely shows its age; decor is dated and tired-looking, the whole place definitely needs a major update. Food was ok, ingredients were good quality but nothing to write home about. Staff speaks very little English but they are courteous and friendly. There's a small outdoor onsen and an indoor one. Waking up to birds chirping and absolute quietness was great. All in all it is a very traditional Japanese ryokan experience.

However the reality was that the ryokan was in desperate need of an upgrade, the room was enormous but it was tired and had big cracks in the sink, water stains in the bath and just not great. We didn't book dinner and therefore were not offered dinner on our first night. All the catering facilities were closed (the on site pub never opened whilst we were there). The ryokan had the feeling of a once very popular and grand venue, but had fallen on hard times. Also despite free wifi being advertised in all rooms, there was none. Only in reception area. Annoying. Despite all this the staff were friendly and the spa facilities very, very nice. On checking out despite asking for help, none was given with our bags and despite about 8 staff all bowing and saying good bye, not one of them helped with our luggage. All in all, I won't be returning nor recommending it.

• evapiir (10/5): Definite favourite! - Although the location might be a bit offputting (nothing much to see or do in the area), the hotel itself makes up for it. The room was massive - balcony with a lovely view to the garden, tea room, sleeping area, toilet, large bathroom etc. The onsen was really relaxing as well. However, try to follow the general etiquette and if you're not sure, do as other people do. If you have tattoos, ask the staff kindly if it's ok. We have some and since we asked them before going to the onsens, it wasn't a problem. The breakfast was ok but nothing special. Tip: the hotel has a shuttle bus taking you to and from the hotel but it requires a reservation. Tip#2: When you get to your room and find that there are beds missing, don't worry. They will re-organise your room during your stay in the onsens.
• Mish_H50 (6/5): Very Basic- quite disappointing - The allure of one of the oldest hotels is awesome except it has since been enlarged and its HUGE. getting lost in it is not a possibility - its a certainty. The food was OK, mediocre not great. The service was also not best. Wifi is available only in certain areas.
• tokko2014 (6/5): 食事がいまいち　The　dinner was not good. - 旅館の建物は趣きがありますが、改修がされていないので絨毯が擦り切れていたりして います。旅館の素晴らしい庭を楽しむことができるように、喫茶の場所を解放してフリードリンクを楽しめる場所にすれば、資源の有効活用ができると思います。 食事は懐石ということでしたが、いまいちです。他の方も書いておられましたが、天ぷらも冷たく、旅館の売りの、温かいものは温かく、冷たいものは冷たくというキャッチフレーズから程遠いです。従業員もプロというよりはパート、バイトの類です。 I do not recommend this hotel because you would not get what you expected. The room is spacious and has a touch of Japanese taste, but the dinner is not good and the service is not good,either.
• JohnandAnn2013 (8/5): Excellent experience - A great experience of traditional Japanese ryokan. Our lovely room with sitting area overlooking the garden and tatami matting, also provided the yukata for each of us to use during our stay. Tea is provided before dinnner and also opportunity to use the onsen where hot spring bathing indoors and out gives utter relaxation, after the ritual scrub and shower, bliss.
