Guest Reviews
- Bryan (2/5): - Pets were welcome and probably needed for protection obvious drug activity looked like the type of place you wake up to your truck on blocks if its there at all. Dirty in poor condition and definitely not ssfe
- John (2/5): - Dirty, scummy place.
- LeeAnna (2/5): - Terrible
- Brent (10/5): A good cheap hotel - One of the best showers ever
- Gary (8/5): - Staff was very friendly and courteous
- Brent (10/5): Nice room - Just a clean n cheap room. The shower is the best ive had. Ive stayed in more expensive hotels and the showers aren't very good
- Randall (8/5): - Rooms are hit and miss. Some have heat and some don’t so I carry an electric heater with me. It’s close to town and have had no problems at night . Make sure to check room for working lights and ac
- Stephanie (2/5): - I would really like to discuss a refund - this property was very unclean and I didn’t even feel comfortable taking a shower here, there was so much dirt and debri in the tub and I pulled out about a clump of dirt and hair larger than my arm out of the drain in the tub. The tub drain was stuck shut at first and I had to pry it open to even get the blockages of hair and dirt out: on top of this was the room was very unclean there were over 20 burn holes in the blankets. The floor was never swept and room loomed like it was never cleaned
- Jonathan (6/5): Adequate for an overnight stay. - The hotel is very cheaply run. No coffee. Only microwave is in the lobby. The toilet paper is gossamer (useless). Shower temperature varies. Retro architecture.
- Joni (2/5): Worst night of my life - This was the worst place I have ever stayed in. There was gang graffiti all over the walls bedding looked like someone pissed in it,the room smelled horrible. The bathroom was so nasty none of us took a shower. The towels had blood all over them. My niece literally fell in the room because there was something all over the floors. I asked the front desk for part of a refund and I was told absolutely not. So don't even think the picture on the outside is a good reference for how the motel is because you will be in for a big surprise.
- Julian (6/5): - It was fine cheap and good to just sleep for the next day
- Kristen (4/5): - Booked room for 2 adults and I kids plus two dogs. Opened room to have only one bed and no couch. Then was moved to a room that was not only dirty, but had bullet holes in the window. It was. It smelled terrible, smoke plus moldy. It was very late after many hours of driving, so tried to sleep on top of bed with blankets we originally brought for dogs.
- Christina (4/5): very old too soft bed - This place was pretty horrible. The bed was over soft in about 27 years old. The bathroom was so disgusting that I didn’t wanna go in there. The floor was dirty things are falling off the walls and it smelled horrible! The only benefit they had… I don’t remember.
- Dale (4/5): - I found the Royal Inn to be very outdated and in need of repair and cleaning. The highlight was a very nice bed and linens.
- Edward (8/5): Ac was good and cold. Many cable channels. - Ok for the price. New older veteran at front desk. He treated us well.
- Alex (4/5): - Considering it was the only available room in the city of Portsmouth, OH, we really had no other choice than "The Four Keys" this was the better choice. However this place was nowhere near "Royal" we were put in a room that reeked of cigarette smoke, it was very dingy, the door looked as if it had been broken into more than once.
- Brent (10/5): A nice stay - Just a nice n cheap place to stay
- Adam (2/5): - This motel is in horrible disrepair. Rooms are dirty, no hot water, smells moldy.
- Michael (2/5): - Dirty dirty and dirty
- Z8953RYdaveh (2/5): Don't stay at this dump. - This place is a total dump. My GF and I took a shower, and then walked a crossed the floor to the bed and our feet got filthy from walking on the dirty floor. The phone in the room didn't work, the towels were badly stained, the bathtub had years of built up crud in it. The office stunk so bad it about make you gag (that nasty curie smell). I have photos of the room if anyone wants to see them contact me at davewhull88@yahoo.com. The springs in the bed were also shot, and some family member or friend of the owners kept pulling up to the main entrance with their radio blaring very late at night. You would be much better off sleeping in your car then staying at this dump. It also seems to be a place where drug addicts and prostitutes gather.
- Brent (10/5): Awesome stay - A very clean room and friendly staff
- Martin (2/5): ABSOLUTELY AWFUL - Dirty, burn holes in everything curtains, sheets, bed, mattress everything
- Scott (8/5): - Kind of a low cost gem. It was actually a nice little place for the lower cost. The room was clean and cozy.
- Matthew (2/5): - Stayed there on a Friday and Saturday night. Friday night our neighbor next door was beating the pulp out of a woman the whole night. The second night (Saturday) consisted of 5-6 mid 20s guys yelling and screaming while blasting music in their cars and speeding around the small parking lot. Fights broke out, yelling, it was ridiculous. Stay at your own risk, and make sure to be packing. Our door frame showed signs of being kicked down several times. 2/10 only because it was just a place to sleep in between travels. Rooms had sagging ceilings, leaking sink and shower, smelled like mold and bleach. Wouldn’t stay for free.
- Brent (10/5): Shower - A nice little cozy room. The shower looked iffy, but the water pressure was the best ive had, i know its silly, but that morning shower felt so good
- Charles (8/5): Royall stay . - I was disappointed that the picture in my room was hung upside down .
- James (8/5): Address issue with hotels.com. - Only problem the address should be portsmouth ohio. I have mentioned this many times. Royal inn is in ohio not in kentucky.
- Sarah (6/5): - Needs updating
- Harold N Anita (2/5): - Was not taken care of. Room looked terrible. Pillow cases with holes. Walls dirty and floor.
- Terry (8/5): - I like the location. It was easy to find and close to a good variety of restaurants. It is an older hotel and is showing its age but all we needed was a bed and a bathroom for the night, so it was perfect for our needs. The price was reasonable for this hotel.
- Mary (10/5): - love front desk man nice smile
- John (8/5): - This was a simple room for one night. Check was easy as well as check out system.
- Bryan (4/5): - Not well kept. Holes in the walls of the room. Basic maintenance not done.
- Mark (8/5): Budget - Budget place.
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Clean and quiet
- John (8/5): Good Value Few Ammenities - The rooms were very clean. There was no coffee, shampoo, tissues or clothes hangers or hair dryers in the room.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - At check in the gentlemen was very nice. I thought I had registered for 2 double beds and only got 1 queen. The bathroom shower curtain had mold on it, the white bathmat had a large gray/black spot on it right next to the little packaged soap. It was really out dated. The bed was very comfortable though.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - That was the worst motel I have ever stayed in. They charged me extra for my pet. The room was not clean and no ice. They had a police officer come around to the rooms in the morning. Did not feel comfortable at all.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Good service, low quality rooms - No fridge or microwave, floor sticky, nice man working the front
- Danielle (4/5): - The room i stayed in was nasty. The bathtub was falling apart. It was just NASTY
- Verified traveler (6/5): - The property is in desperate need of updates. The staff was great and helpful. The beds were uncomfortable and the bedding was stained and had burn spots.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Smelled of cigarette smoke and there was bugs crawling on the walls.
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Nothing it was old ran down and looked lived in by junkies.
- Misti (10/5): - It is clean and quiet friendly front desk associates I have been there twice so far and about to go back for a couple more nights this week. I will always stay there when I travel to that area
- Christine (2/5): Never again - Didn’t even stay. The office smelled horrid. The property itself was dirty and definitely not taken care of. The rooms were gross. Someone actually came out of their room and said there is mold in their room!!!
- Shawn (10/5): Good especially for the price. - We booked a king bed, smoking. The bed was amazingly soft, everything was pretty clean. A few cobwebs, but overall good. But, the air conditioning crapped out. They moved us to another room. This one had a double bed and a twin bed. The twin bed was soft and comfortable, the double bed felt like a cheap mattress. The room was pretty clean overall, but the toilet hadn't been properly cleaned with someone else's leftovers under the seat. Towels are large, but thin and only two for two people.
Thin walls.
No one bothered us or our vehicle outside.
Would stay again as it is mostly clean, mostly quiet, and service is good.
- Abel (8/5): - Basic no frills hotel, clean, good for a quick day or two
- Verified traveler (2/5): - We refused to stay. The room was nasty. None of the lights worked and there were bare wires at one light socket. My son went to use the restroom and a centipede cane crawling across the floor. When I went to ask for a refund, the gentleman didn’t even hesitate, just ask for my card. I assume he knew how bad it was.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - What i didnt like open door and door falls apart mold and mildew in bath tub so had to be moved and other room not much better
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Dirty room. Turned light switch off and then back on. Light didnt come back on so i went to turn on and off again. Just touched the switch it popped and light came back on.. floor had a big bubble. Bathroom dirty. The rooms all had a bad smell also. The doors did not lock correctly.
- KC (8/5): - It is an older motel. Nothing special. Everything worked. I slept great. I had to do some laundry so it was nice that there was a laundromat across the street.
- W (2/5): - Absolutley disguisting!!! Stains on towels, nothing wiped down. Paper thin walls. People in next rooms crank the tv and music til early hours of the morning. Don't want to say anything, because they might actually kill you!! Very bad neighborhood.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Very low end. Dirty, smelly rooms, stains on bed and walls and cigarette burn holes in bed spread. We checked in at 11:30 pm and people were coming and going from their rooms constantly. The place was noisy and felt unsafe.
When I entered the room, the cigarette smell was overwhelming and my throat became very irritated. I started to cough involuntarily. I am 47 years old and have slept in plenty of smoking rooms in the past, but something else was going on in this room to Cause me that kind of reaction.
I never even unpacked. I called my friend who was traveling with me two doors down and told him I could not stay here. His room wasn’t as bad as mine, but was still dirty. While I was talking to him, I pulled back the bedspread on his bed and there were little black flecks all over the sheets. Gross!
I returned the keys to the desk and told the night manager that it was just too rough and I asked for a refund but was flatly refused. We were in the rooms for less than 10 minutes, but I suppose they are used to hourly clients!
Stay away from this place! It was the only hotel/motel in town with vacancy, so we had to drive a bit to find another place to stay. I would normally be more upset than I was that the experience cost me $100, but being able to leave that crap hole was its own reward.
- Verified traveler (8/5): - Good hotel....rgbjhvvxbjhaxgtbkidhvhvx hmm ju f2f h
- Joseph (2/5): - Tgecroom was nasty and room about to fall they duck tape to hold mold up towels was nasty I had to buy towels to take shower the room just nasty
- Bob (8/5): - Not bad for the price would stay there again
Could have put out a few more clothes hangers to hang your clothes up on the next room over played there tv to loud all night long
- James (8/5): - Off the main drag. No noise. Felt safe. Cheap rate for weekend stays. If not staying at the Shawnee resort lodge due to bookings I will go back to royal inn
- compucandi (2/5): Dated...Yes, Safe...Not So Much - I read the reviews before booking, and knew that this hotel was dated and a bit run down, so my expectations were met when I arrived. However, I was simply staying overnight, so this was not a problem, and the bedding was clean and free of bugs.
That was until 01:30. After being asleep for 3 hours, I was awakened by pounding on the wall of my room, and on the door. I fell asleep with the TV on, so I thought someone was complaining about the noise, as the walls were paper thin (and I couldn't check who was at the door, as the door had no peephole).
I started to feel unsafe. The door locks were a chain lock that had to be as old as the building, and the second lock was a loop of plastic covered wire that wrapped around the door knob. At 02:00, the real fun began, with the neighboring room having a fight, slamming doors, etc. I could hear it all...remember, the walls were paper thin.
Around 03:00, I started hearing threats of shooting in the shouts next door, so I packed up my things and took my key to the office, telling the attendant what was transpiring and recommending he call the police. It was clear by his reaction that the police were not going to be called, and perhaps this type of thing happened all the time. This is the first time I have ever left an hotel in the middle of my stay, and certainly not in the middle of the night!
- 22mop (2/5): Do not stay here. - The room smelled so mildewy I had to buy air freshener. The sheets were threadbare. I had to remove a wad of hair from the shower drain. There were hand prints on all of the mirrors. Oh and I was awaken by someone being arrested outside my window.
