Guest Reviews
- Keoni (5/5): -
- AMY (1/5): - Please be careful and avoid this place and any property pertaining to OYO. Booking.com had this place listed on their website for the city and state I needed to book. This place was not located nowhere near my destination. I have been disputing this with both entities. I was told by the property, and OYO, this reservation would be canceled, and I would not be charged. That was a lie. Booking.com has not taken any accountability for this error, and I continue to keep getting the run around. Thankfully, I have a recorded phone call with customer care confirming I would not be charged so I will escalate this matter and dispute these charges with my financial institution! Booking.com stated OYO denied my cancelation, but the property told me they were never contacted. Again, booking com states OYO has not responded to their attempts to resolve this matter. BE AWARE and don't do business with either entity!!!! Such a scam!!!! How they scam people!
- Andrii (10/5): Goooood - Gooood Gooood
- Terry (6/5): It's convenient for me to stop as I travel through but have noticed over the property has run down. - Friendly staff, easy on and off the highway. No soap at sink or shower, no shampoo/conditioner in the bathroom. Stained carpet. Some units were rented out. I asked for a nonsmokers room, could smell smoke as soon as I walked in.
- Louis (10/5): - Parking up the hill behind was not easy. Most room doors face the lot, so, not too secure feeling, but quiet was nice.
- Mark (5/5): Would not stay here again. - Towels were great! Bathroom shower curtain was filthy and also a certificate of someone that had completed drug rehabilitation was taped to the mirror which we thought was weird and when we walked to our room, someone was cooking in one of the rooms.
- Kevin (2/5): - This place has no clue what was going on no working at front desk u always had to go looking for them the should of made mantince man in charge he had more brain then anyone else
- Richard (4/5): - I had to cancel our stay, but could not find a way to do that . I tried everything on line I could think of, so We end up being a no show and I will have to eat the cost.
I was not very happy!
I will not recommend this service to anyone.

- Jim (1/5): Bad - When we arrived, they told us we didn't have a room even tho I had confirmation from booking.com
- Faith (10/5): Exceptional - For a little inn on the side of the road this place was awesome! Very comfortable. Great value as well.
- Bkyhaugsted (7/5): Good - Great guy at the front desk. Well treated and made to feel welcome. Had a nice stay but it is a very basic place. There are permanent residents there, 2 doors down had his car on jacks. Makes it seem run down
- Jacob (10/5): - I love my every stay at this hotel
- Jacob (10/5): - Enjoyed y stay
- Jacob (10/5): - Good stay
- Jacob (10/5): - Will stay again
- Penny and Glen (10/5): - We like staying there the only thing is we reserved a smoking roon on the site only to be givin a non smoking. If the site says the have them then why
- Lyle (10/5): Exceptional -
- Anna (10/5): Exceptional -
- Joel (2/5): - Looked at the room; it smelled and was old in every way. The parking looked like a junk yard - dented and broken down cars and parts all around. We didn't feel safe as a result.
- Bob (8/5): - This hotel has a sign which needs repair, but the bed was comfortable, it was clean and the had a modern bathtup with a nice table as a desk
- Todd (8/5): Very good -
- Dennae (5/5): Passable - Close to event we were at Old, dirty, didn’t feel safe
- Kevin (10/5): - Parking lot needs repaired
- William (5/5): Ok - Friendly staff and hotel served my purpose clean room hot shower and comfortable bed. Very dated and parking lot rough, I wouldn't take my family there.
- Kirk (8/5): - The room is spacious and the staff is friendly. The property is a bit dated.
- jeffrey (6/5): Thin exterior walls - No one at front desk when we arrived. We had to call someone to let us in (10pm). Is a motor in, we could hear people talking outside each time someone arrived. Smelled musty. maybe request not first floor?
- Katherine (4/5): - I feel bad writing a negative review, but I will do just that. I generally seek out less expensive lodging when I travel alone for just one night...after all, what does it matter for a night? But in this case I felt that absolutely nothing had been done to upgrade a property that desperately needed something. Carpet was ripped, everything was just way beyond tired. Staff was friendly, but you had to call when you arrived. I thought sure there would be someone at the desk in the morning when I wanted a receipt but no one there. No breakfast, and there was no coffee in my room for the tired coffee maker. I am staying somewhere else on my return trip.
- Craig (1/5): Short I did not stay - My room smelled like dog urine literally
- Frank (10/5): - was great
- Heidi (4/5): - Check in person didn’t seem too happy to be having to check someone in and didn’t know what she was doing. Our room wasn’t ready at 3:00. Didn’t explain the keys and how they worked had to go to desk again. Said there was ice on 1st could not find anywhere and no one was there to ask. Temp in room was hot when we got there finally fridge not plugged in so not cold to put items in. Phone not plugged in had to juggle to make it work. Broke down cars in two spots where we were to park. No breakfast items as promised except granola bars on counter and not a sole around to ask anything. Very old furniture. Piece of paper on the floor by shower for a mat. Will never stay here again. Very unsatisfactory for $121.00 per night. Booking was a nightmare also.
- christeeraes (2/5): Very scary motel with a high price. - The air conditioner makes loud noises. The refrigerator doesn't work. Broken down vehicles fill the parking lot. The gentleman who checked me in was clueless. If I had any other options I would not stay. Motel smells very bad. I will try to stay tonight, but may have to leave.
- Sherry (10/5): - It was very suitable for our needs
- Robert (7/5): Good -
- Judy (10/5): - Nice place
- Don (10/5): - Nice place for the price
- David (8/5): - Out of town.
- Cecilie (9/5): As expected and a bit more - No nonsense stay, good beds and nice attendant
- Weldon (7/5): ok - I had a $3 charge on my credit card which I did not recognize - OYO Hotels, before I stayed there. I called the number on the credit card statement and was told that it was not OYO Hotels. Visa thought it was fraud and cancelled my credit card. This necessitated getting a new card and informing several merchants who automatically charge the card each month. When I looked at the confirmation the day of arrival to confirm the location I saw this charge at the bottom of the email. I had not noticed this charge until then. I have never encountered such a charge with Booking.com. I Informed the hotel and asked them to take this off. It was originally taken off by Visa but was reinstated after I informed them that it as not fraud., The hotel has not removed this charge as I write. Please see that this charge is removed and instruct OYO to correct the telephone number so charges can be confirmed - this has caused a big inconvenience. Also tell them to fix the sign on the property as it was dim and the hotel was hard to find in the dark.
- Diana (10/5): Great place to stay! - It was very nice! People were very accommodating. I just didn’t like that the doors were locked from 10-6am and no access to get in. They were very helpful though in leaving the door unlocked or propped for me.
- Gorz (8/5): Harlan Motel, Harlan, IA - We were on a budget and needed 3 nights. Thru Booking, this came out to just under $50 per night. The room was bigger than expected, plenty of room for the king sized bed. The mattress on the bed was more comfortable than our Sleep Number bed at home. It looked like motel was going through a budget remodeling. In our room, the carpet was older but was clean and well vacuumed. There was a heating unit on the wall that worked great and was precise at keeping the whole room evenly heated.TV was a Hitachi and worked great. Refrigerator, microwave, and coffee pot all worked great. It 2 sinks, one inside bathroom, one just outside bathroom. Toilet, tub, and floor were all clean. Although there were several rooms rented during New Years Eve and Day, all was completely quiet. So, it depends on what you are after for your stay. It's not a Marriott, but it was perfect for us! The ice machine didn't work, so they made ice in trays and filled baggies with the ice. They were prompt in getting us ice, so no problem for us. My wife showered the morning we left and the water went from warm to cold in 2 minutes. I figure adding greater hot water capacity is part of the remodeling. It had WIFI which was good, but a low end TV network. Again, no biggy for us. We watched a lot of Gunsmoke, Laramie, Big Valley and Gene Autry. The motel is carved into the side of a hill, so, first floor on the front side is at ground level. When you drive around to the back side, you go uphill, so, there is no climbing stairs to get to your room on second floor, either.Kind of cool. The second floor driveway could be wider, but everybody navigated it ok. There is also a lounge and soda machine in second floor which was nice...no food vending, tho. None of these things bothered us. We were well pleased with the economy and cleanliness and comfort of our stay.
- C (1/5): Eaten alive by bugs - The room had bed bugs. I was supposed to get a refund but I haven't seen it yet. Just over all terrible. I didn't like any of it. Bed bugs will ruin a stay for sure.
- Steven (5/5): We just wanted a place to sleep - It was great to have our 2 dogs with us and the shower head was great. I didn’t want to get out of shower. 2 broken chairs and a stain on carpet
- Kathleen (4/5): Disappointing -
- Kimberly Ann (6/5): - Friendly staff.
I didn't care for the parking lot, front lighting was not lit up.
- Mendez (10/5): Exceptional -
- Pamela (8/5): Very good - Friendly staff Could use updating and freshing up
- Audrey (7/5): Good - Not enough staff. No breakfast. Tv didn’t work for first 2 days. Tv to work and breakfast
- Verified traveler (6/5): - Property is dated. It worked for a place to stay for the night. You get what you pay for and I’d say it’s priced appropriate.
- Nichole (5/5): Passable - Didn’t have a breakfast The dog barking next door constantly at all hours.
- Douglas (10/5): Super! -
- Gurley (10/5): Exceptional - Quit comfortable and affordable, just need sleepovers quarters Bathroom needs a little scrubbing
- Jane (8/5): - Staff was very helpful.
- Rosanne (5/5): Though lacking by industry standards, country setting offers sights, sounds & smells of rural Iowa. - Friendly owner working hard to revive this well-worn 70s-era highway motel. No extras available, but did offer a clean room, hot shower and fairly comfortable bed. Very affordable. Parking lot and check-in area in need of attention. Many eating establishments in town have closed. Options limited.
- Jeff (7/5): Good -
- Danielle (10/5): Exceptional - The owners were so nice and helpful and made sure to make me and my son's and mom and dad feel comfortable
- Terry (7/5): Good - Easy location to find. Some thing was on the wall behind the door. Needs to be updated
- Brian (3/5): Older building, will not return. - Friendly owner. Loud noisy area located on a main road. Dated facilities. No breakfast available, although breakfast area was present but closed with no food both mornings. No staff, had to call owner to get room key. Located on same lot as an unconventional church, odd cultish feel.
- Rebecca (9/5): Superb - I liked the easy access to the road. Friendly staff. Comfortable bed.
- Cristy (9/5): Its good & affordable. Definitely will stay there again. - Friendly Ice Machine Broke
- Olson (10/5): Exceptional -
- Jeffrey (10/5): - Clean rooms friendly staff
- Verified traveler (2/5): Stay away! - This hotel was awful! No one staffing the lobby, had to call and wait for someone to show up! Room was dusty and the bathroom floor had hair on it. Coffee cup was filled with dirt and dust was unusable. No coffee or breakfast service even though website listed it. Lobby unstaffed at all times!
- Margaret (1/5): Couldn't make it through the first night - Nothing g Everything. It smelled they were doing construction. No ice machine working no coffee or breakfast the wifi wasn't working. It had old beds and bedding. Stains in the bathroom. Food on the lamp shade. I want a full refund.
- Jeff (8/5): Nice, inexpensive place to sleep - Had a quick overnight stay while in Harlan. Worked out perfectly for my needs... a bed and a shower.
- Verified traveler (4/5): No wifi/internet. No help on sight - I arrived late, but was still able to get settled after a long day of driving. When I got checked in, I asked about ice, vending machines & wifi. No ice, no vending. They said they had wifi, but I wasn’t able to connect. When I asked if they could assist, the rep couldn’t help and acted annoyed that I asked for help. I definitely won’t be back to stay anytime soon
- Kyker (10/5): Friendly staff, and clean rooms at a decent price. - The lady that checked me in was very friendly. She actually showed me to my room, and pointed out where I could park for the night.
- Rochelle (5/5): This hotel was just ok😐 - It was a reasonable price and it was close to town. The towels were very nice and the people were very kind. I asked for non-smoking and they put us in a smoking room so the smell was very hard to deal with. There was not a good place to throw garbage away due to the garbage cans outside always being full.
- brooket886 (2/5): Dusty Old Roadside Motel - This was a terrible choice to stay. Although affordable when our A/C went out, we were not going to stay here for more than a night. The room said it was non-smoking, yet wreaked of smoke. The beds were cheap and uncomfortable and there was no one at the front desk most of the time. They left a phone on the front desk and said to dial "220". I did that multiple times and no one picked up. I ended up having to go behind the desk, grab a piece of paper out of the printer and write a note out to whoever was supposed to be there. We had booked for 2 nights but decided we could not stay another night there. We were better off in the warmth of our own house even though we didn't have A/C. Would not recommend anyone to stay here.
- Phillip (10/5): - The parking lot is all tore up. It needs to be resurfaced.
- Amy (2/5): - Stained linens, hole in wall, filthy. Pretty sure it's a meth factory!
- Bronte (10/5): - It is old but it seems they’re slowly updating. It was pretty good for the price.
- Cara (2/5): - Run down room, TV and phone didn't work, no one at front desk.
- Tyler (6/5): - Rationale for my review:
- Water was ice cold so we couldn't shower until we got switched to another room
- Parking lot was only partially plowed in winter making for odd parking arrangements
- Continental breakfast wasn't offered in the winter which wasn't disclosed on Expedia
- Found some trash and an empty beer can under one of the beds so rooms were cleaned well before we stayed
Owner/manager quickly got us into another room after the cold water issue so I was happy she was able to accommodate us quickly with our issues.
- Robert (4/5): - No staff at front desk. Had to call 2 different numbers to get in touch with someone to check in. No breakfast the next morning or coffee ready at check out. Again, no one at front desk at check out
- Jeff (4/5): - Wow...awful place to stay and I have never said this before, ever! Check in was SLOW and the area had no lights. No soap/shampoo at all. There was a mouse in the room! No continental breakfast and because it was Thanksgiving...no maid service? All in all....don't stay here, go down the road a mile or so to the Baymont.
- Kevin (6/5): - Parking lot is in bad shape. Natts in the room if you didnt keep air on high so it was cold to keep them at bay. Bed was great tv needed to be bigger. Oh and this is monday afternoon they still havent processed the payment. Website said they only had one room left when we booked no other people were there. Not real sure i would stay there again.
- Kenneth (4/5): - Couldn’t find reservation. Room was terrible bugs dead on sink spiders dead on floor battery in smoke detector dead bed and sheets looked old and dirty. Entry door looked like it had been kicked in. Traffic was very loud.
- Jean (4/5): - I can't say that there was anything that we liked. The room was big and seemed clean, but the bed was hard as a rock! The shower was a hand held with a short range. We are tall people and couldn't even get the water on my head to wash my hair. The parking lot was full of potholes and there were chunks of concrete just laying around! Next time we'll spend the extra money and stay at a better hotel in Harlan.
- Lenora (10/5): Interesting - It was good and quite out in the middle nowhere
- Verified traveler (4/5): - Room smelled, bedding stunk like smoke, pillows stunk spiders in the bathroom, floor was gross, bedding was stained, and had food around the bottom.
- Verified traveler (2/5): Run do not pass go or youll regret it - The room was dirty, smelled bad, and there were bugs. No coffee or food Sunday. Even the microwave was dirty. I had a non smoking room and it smelt like smoke and a rotten smell. I didnt have a choice but to stay but i will never go there again.
- Verified traveler (6/5): Basic no complaints - Basic hotel could use better towels
- Verified traveler (4/5): Could be better - Stained Linen holes in washcloths. Freezing room to check into that took forever to get warm. Dirty shower and bath.
- Kimberly (2/5): ever stay here again - The check in was very pleasant for us however the rooms we got were not! There were yellow and red stains in the bedding in one of our rooms. Both rooms had a very musty smell and pee smell! Our room the refrigerator was not cleaned out prior to us arriving! There were really no plug ins for charging phones and the hallway was so hot and musty smelling. The outside the parking lot had huge pit holes and the weeds were hip tall to me on the side of our motel. Not a very pleasant stay at all if I could get our money back for both rooms I would have went to a different hotel.
- Verified traveler (2/5): - Could not check in. No employees anywhere. Spent 25 minutes looking for an employee, knocking on the office door, and calling the hotel.
- Keith (6/5): - The rooms were very clean and spacious. The lobby was neat, but small and kind of drab. The parking lot was very badly broken up asphalt. There was a pile of debris on the ground out behind the hotel where apparently rooms had been renovated and the old carpet, etc was just laying on the ground. Just poor presentation, but a clean place to stay.
- T3335PBbarbaras (8/5): Trip to Iowa - Booked the property on Priceline. Always concerned when booking motels it is usually just a shot in the dark. On arriving wasn't sure that the property was where we wanted to stay. Once inside the lobby began to be a bit more optimistic. The room was very nice and clean. The breakfast was nice with hot items as well as cold items. The property could could use some sprucing up, but would stay here again.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - It was too expensive for want was Provided it was not close to a restaurant or a Store
- JJ (2/5): - Reserved a smoking room with 2 double beds (according to their website). Got there was told no smoking, I said your website said you had smoking rooms. So I showed them what I had reserved, they gave us a smoking room with 1 King bed. The room smelled like they had tried to cover an odor. Outside of the door was a literal junkyard, with 2 junk card and garbage. The parking lot was horrible. Huge potholes and shifted placement all over that's dangerous to drive over. The WiFi was like dial up. Waited minutes for anything to load, then the TV didn't work, they had to find a cable for it. I took pics but not sure if I can post them. This was like a No Tell, Motel. Will never stay again. Them on checkout, they were unable to print a receipt, do they your the bottom of my checking receipt and handed me that. BEWARE!!!!!
- Verified traveler (10/5): - The bed was very comfy...room was neat and clean...quieter then expected for being by a main Hwy...loddy/breakfast/ bar area (all in one)...had nice and simply choices for bfast food...beer variety...and ambience music...staff was accommodating...friendly...and attentive...decent stay for a 1st time...hopefully they eventually get the funds to redo the parking lot...little rough I'm sure from the weather and big rigs...
- Henry (6/5): Iowa event stay - The room was clean and comfortable but not worth $125 a night. The bagged up smoke detector was a bit disturbing. Most of the staff was warm and friendly, but the clerk at checkout could not print us a receipt or use their system. The parking lot is a disaster so be careful. The breakfast is very limited and not suitable for people with any health issues.
- 904davej (2/5): I thought they were operating a brothel!!! - I don't recall ever being so disgusted with the appearance of a motel!! I thought maybe this was a "no-tell motel" type place!! They were almost entirely booked by a construction company that had booked their rooms for the entire summer. When we arrived, there seemed to be a party in progress with beer in hand and the barbeque going. I asked that we be refunded the money we had spent to make our reservation and they agreed not to charge us. When I got home, I checked my credit card and, sure enough, they had charged me for the room, even though we stayed elsewhere. When I called them, they said I had to cancel through the reservation company. But, the reservation company said that they didn't collect for the property at all!!! So, it looks like I have been ripped off for the room charge even though we didn't stay there. I called the Shelby County Sheriff's office to register a complaint even though I knew there was nothing they could do. But I just had to let them know how "scummy" this place was.
- Zachery (8/5): Small town, Old luxury - Great little hotel on the edge of Harlan. Very accommodating.
- Verified traveler (6/5): - No breakfast or even coffee; but nice clean rooms. Parking
Facilities iced with snow. No reception person on duty!
- Kelly (4/5): - I picked this hotel to try something different than I had stayed at before. I regret my decision. I couldn't see the front entrance well so I ended up coming in from the back. The entire front parking lot was broken up and bad. I had to dodge the broken parts. The bed was extremely hard and I ended up sleeping in the chair. The decor was dated. The breakfast was not good. There was no one at the desk at checkout to tell the issues to. I tried to call the front desk at my arrival but they didn't answer. There is no workout room either.
- jeromev818 (8/5): It’s been updated! - We were here two years ago and they were starting to update. They have done a great job. Very friendly, accommodating desk person.
Room was great. Ask for second floor rear. You can drive around and park there and walk into the second floor hallway. And it is totally quiet.
Very nice room. Excellent shower. Nice, big towels. Real coffee cups!!!!
Breakfast was good with lots of choices.
- alyssajg2019 (4/5): Awful, stay away. - It was dirty and old. I went and bought my own disinfectant wipes to clean our bathroom. The hotel manager or owner was rude and tried to get into an argument with me until she pulled her employee in to verify that we weren’t the ones lying. Then she acted as nice as can be. The ONLY upside to staying here is the breakfast has fresh food.
- huskeremt (8/5): Suprise - I grew up in the Harlan area, and my parents moved from the farm to an apartment, so we need to stay elsewhere when visiting. We had stayed at a place IN town a couple of times but it was expensive when all we really need is a bed and a place to shower. I remember this hotel from while I was younger so stopped and asked to see a room. The lady at the desk showed me several. They are being remodeled and updated. We've stayed there twice now and won't go back to "town" to stay again. Rooms are clean and quiet. I was SHOCKED that there were not more people there over the holidays. Very polite staff. (there is no pool-but where we stayed earlier-there was so much chlorine in it you couldn't swim anyway). Breakfast is better than just a roll and coffee. And it's about 1/2 in not more of the price for the one IN town. This is just a mile or so north of Harlan so not a big deal. And it's nice that if you get an upstairs room, you can still park at the door due to "split level" parking. It's nice to stay in the country. :) We'll be back.
- chucksN4149OY (8/5): Pretty good - Clearly, new owners are trying to pull this hotel's coals out of the fire and doing a good job of it. Room was good, inside and outside access. Beds okay, nice down comforters. Very nice breakfast, day one, ¼ inch thick hot pressed ham slices, roast potatoes. Day two, hot two egg omelets, tatter tots. Fruit yogurts, waffles, juice. Well thought out. Hey, cooler with all kinds of bottles of beers. Can't go wrong with that. Don't know the prices. Parking lot will need work. Had TV issue from previous guest, owner took immediate action, called Direct TV, fixed it in short order. Good price, good service.
- wmcneese (8/5): Overnight stat - Stayed overnight. Decent enough place. Clean. A little outdated, but as long as a place is clean,I'm not that particular. Just need a clean place to sleep. For the price,it was great. I was surprised there was a hot breakfast considering the price. Not big choices, but good. Would stay there again.
