Guest Reviews
- Kim (6/5): - People were lovely and river view so beautiful and very cheap For the very cheap cheap price it was fine for run down resort because the people and view are lovely

- Thepkosolpranithi (10/5): -
- JDBOY (10/5): - The Location, the Breakfast, the Staff who helped us to get the Room changed as there was no Air-conditioning in the room we got 1st.
The Room we got later with good Air-conditioning excellent ambience
- Dylan (1/5): Would not stay again - The only nice thing is that its located on the river Everything that is mentioned on booking.com is false. Below is a list of all the issues:
-Myself and my girlfriend were the only guest here, there was only us and the receptionist (it was eerie at night)
- there’s no food/drink places on site
-its near on impossible to get a taxi from the hotel to the centre and it’s a far walk
-booking.com mentions amenities such as- lockbox, hair dryer, spa, laundry- NONE of this was true
- the hotel rooms are also dirty
I advise not to stay here
- Wardroup (6/5): The hotel had old world charm and with some updating could again be outstanding - The hotel was near the river and the staff was excelent. The hotel is dated, we had a water leak in the bathroom that left the floor constantly wet. When I booked through booking .com the hotel was advertised as having a restaurant but only had breakfast available.
- Thiel (10/5): -
- Yvonne (6/5): huge very quiet but aging resort. Not value for money unless you are seeking isolation in nature - Large grounds and natural garden setting by the river. Very peaceful and relaxing. Pool to ourselves. No crowds, hardly anyone else in the large resort. There was a smell from water in the bathroom.
All rooms needed extra deep cleaning.
Limited facilities in the room, everything very old and poorly maintained.
Restaurants did't appear to be open at all.
Limited information provided by staff.
Wifi only at reception so very poor any where else.
Quite a few insects being by the river
- Jordi O. (7/5): Lloc bonic però una mica apartat - L'espai en general i ls piscina molt bonics i agradables. Al costat del riu. Bon lloc per relaxar-se. Personal amable. Una mica apartat del centre. Habitacions senzilles i no tant netes com esperavem . Aire acondicionat molt sorollós. L'esmorzar no ens va agradar, tot i oferir un buffet llliure molt ampli.
- Kotchaporn (10/5): เงียบสงบ เหมาะกับการพักผ่อน - เป็นธรรมชาติ เงียบสงบ

- Brian (6/5): Pleasant - The property is located on the Kwai River in a beautiful location. The swimming pool and surrounding area was stunning. It was very peaceful and the pool and seeing was very comfortable. Comfortable beds and nice warm showers.
- Gerald (7/5): Good -
- Garry (6/5): with wife and 4 children it was value for money and i would stay there again. - its a Thai family run resort and is old and ageing but its location is ok and central to most tourist attractions and very quiet, it is in a picturesque area backing onto the river Kwai, it is a low budget resort and is value for money. with lots of new resorts popping up all around the Kanchanaburi area, it is hard for them to maintain a large resort like this in such a competitive market, but it is Thai owned and run so i would rather support the locals then the conglomerates, i would definitely stay there again. a little bit old and needs a bit more maintenance done but it is low budget, so you get what you pay for.
- Thomas (8/5): Very good -
- Kasiti (5/5): Passable -
- Martin (2/5): Resort is closed shame on booking.com disgraceful - Receptionist saicil treid her best Didnt get room ordered resort is deserted restruant out of order...
- Amber (10/5): Would definitely recommend to anyone, it’s a lovely place to stay, so serine. - We stayed in a raft room and the views were stunning Can’t complain
- Anne (10/5): Exceptional -
- Mark (8/5): Very good -
- Lukasz (7/5): A charming place by the river. - Cottage by the water, lots of space, good breakfast in the fresh air, large parking lot and possibility of parking at the cottage It's loud, the sounds of the disco carry down the river, boats sail during the day. I know the hotel has no influence on this but it loses a lot because of this noise and hotel owners should talk to the organizers of the discos. On Friday it was very loud and late at night.
- Reh (10/5): Recommend of Peaceful? This is the place. - All you can eat Breakfast was excellent. It was hard to get a ride. There was not a lot of Grab. If this resort provide a ride with the same price as Grab so people can go anywhere they want to explore.
- Ids (6/5): Basic room, clean, effective airconditioning, good breakfast, beautiful location. - Location at the river Distance to Katchanaburi. You need a car.
- Okkar (5/5): Passable -
- Shadab (4/5): Disappointing -
- Adel (8/5): Not the best accommodation, but lovely location even if remote. - Floating accommodation on the river was wonderfully. We would dive in at all hours The place was not clean, Animal droppings in the corners. The ladders out of the river could have been deeper. Was sometimes a struggle to climb out. Very remote location. They could call taxis, but it wasnt cheap.
- Sidek (1/5): Bad - breakfast not bad, staff friendly property very old, bathroom dirty,
- Alrashidi (4/5): Need massive renovation - Good staff
Good location The hotel needs massive renovation
The electricity wires in the rooms need to be covered
The bathrooms need to be changed
Far from shops
Food
- Roy (5/5): Other than location, I dont recommend anything - I have booked river side room and charged for that. But I got room at 3rd floor.
- Valerie (2/5): Very poor - Very friendly staff Not clean, old dated, noisy airco, far from city centre
- Olga (8/5): Very good - we liked the location. beautiful, large territory, friendly staff. But we were unlucky with the weather, it was raining and we couldn't stay another night, because the bungalow was concrete and it was very humid, damp, and it was hard to breathe. In general, everything is fine, the breakfasts are excellent.
- Elisabetta (9/5): Nice pleasant two nights stay. - Riverside,a lot of space, clean pool, nice staff, good breakfast. Good comfortable beds. To be renovated. Old bathrooms . Old electrical cables etc but ok. Everything works.
- Soe (9/5): Superb -
- Arthur (10/5): Exceptional - Big property. Lots of parking. Good size room. Nice pool. Great free breakfast.
- Chaminda (5/5): Passable -
- Kevan (10/5): Lovely river accommodation - Great location right on the river and great pool and fantastic price
- Kevan (10/5): Exceptional - Amazing location right on the river and lovely pool
- Chaisamorn (9/5): Superb - We stayed in one of the raft houses right on the river, the veranda right on the river is perfect for relaxing and watching the river life flow by. The bathroom needs an upgrade it wasn't the cleanest, but the shower was excellent with good pressure.
The WiFi in the raft houses is not good and we couldn't get a signal.
- Brian (5/5): Passable - The location and river view of the property was ok. The pool looked ok. The breakfast was just ok. The staff were nice. BUT.... The room on the water are terrible. Extreamly outdated. Nothing really works correctly being the tv, the a/c, and the mini refrigerator. The beds should be set on fire cause you do not know what has been in them. The doors allow not only drafts, which don't help the awful air conditioning, but also allow insects & bugs in. The main hotel rooms were ok, but over priced, outdated, and need not only the beds to be replaced, but also the support frames. And the plumbing, specifically the toilet...good luck getting it to flush without over-flowing. Sorry, but never again.
- Matthew (3/5): Would have been fine but the loud music playing all night drove us crazy - View of the river Loud music all night
- Edwin (7/5): Comfortable. - Big room and okay to take our two dogs.
Good location next to the river.
Good breakfast and plenty of it.
Very quiet. Bathroom could do with updating.
- Brian (5/5): In a funny old way it reminded me of the bates hotel in the famous Alfred hitchcock film psycho ,bu - Breakfast options was American breakfast? it consisted of 3 slices of processed ham ,1 fried egg ,mixed salad with mayo over,2 frankfurter sausages and little else ,wow Breakfast, don't have the omelette they cook it in about 6 tble spoons of oil plain with sliced cabbage underneath ???? Yuk
- Sabine (10/5): It‘s a great place to chill - The Raft Bungalow on the river is spacious and clean. The pool is nice, clean and big enough. The whole resort hotel is in a beautiful location and well maintained. Wifi was slow in the bungalow. But ok in the other places.
Since the hotel is a bit out of town, transportation can become difficult, when you have no car. Some drivers don’t even know the hotel, others may have problems with the pronunciation and take you somewhere else. Bicycles for rent would be nice.
- Kaia (6/5): Pleasant -
- Prasanna (5/5): Passable -
- Thavisak (9/5): Superb -
- Thavisak (9/5): Superb -
- Pasu (6/5): Pleasant - very good location on the river bank, very privacy and quiet. i really like boat house. sitting on the balcony and look at the river is a wonderful feeling. the room's wall is very thin and not sound proof. i can hear the noise from the next room clearly. the room is a bit old.
- Andrew (2/5): Duen-non-shine - Resort is not as photos show and
description is inaccurate to say the least. Most probably they were taken 30 years ago.
Very, very disappointing. Would not recommend.
- Fiore (7/5): Good -
- Kirsten (4/5): - For dårligt og reklamere med engelsk morgenmad og der så kun er thai mad. Det var et hyggeligt sted hvis det altså ikke havde været højt musik hver aften som ødelagde hele opholdet
- Leonard (2/5): Dump - Old and not maintaine
- Verified traveler (10/5): - Very friendly and no sacrifices as we chose this location over many of the more expensive hotels. I always stay when in the area.
- 973abbiew (8/5): Beautiful Resort! - Me and my boyfriend were a bit apprehensive to book after reading some of the other reviews but honestly this hotel was incredible! After arriving from Bangkok we were greeted with welcome drinks at reception and shown to our room which was right on the river Kwai, it was unbelievable- just in time for sunset! Albeit the rooms are dated but perfectly clean and the resort is beautiful! Very peaceful by the river and the views were breathtaking. The staff we very helpful in organising taxis and we even got a free breakfast! Amazing trip and a beautiful resort- we even had the pool to ourselves, only wish that we could have stayed for longer.
- SteveMx (8/5): Budget hotel in amazing location - To start let's make it clear this is NOT a five star hotel so do not expect that level of accommodation and then complain about room facilities etc.
If you want 5 star pay 5 star prices. This is a mid budget, reasonably clean, with more than I expected for the price paid.
The raft rooms are timber built and floats on the river but very stable. This gives unique experience with a balcony directly overlooking the river with the sounds of birds and frogs instead of bars, clubs and traffic you would get in town.
The raft rooms are part of the overall resort which has an immaculate pool, restaurant area and plenty of wide open space, trees and garden.
I booked for 2 nights and extended for another 2 but had to then move on. I would have stayed longer and would go back.
- Verified traveler (8/5): Country living - The staff was very friendly. The location is away from the city and is on the river which is a plus.
- mintiiebabii (2/5): Never Go There!! - Me and my fam went there wanting to spend the night, but we were treated very badly by staff. They were very rude and had no manners towards guests. The hotel is old and not as nice as it looks in the photos. If you are looking for a good place to relax while you are on your holiday i would find a better place.
- markbslocum (6/5): River Rooms Ok, all else very "tired"! - Like an old glamorous Hollywood actor, this place has definitely seen better days and times. The gardens and river location are good, but it is rather isolated from Kanchanaburi centre so it's only convenient if you have transport, otherwise it's 200baht songthiew trip each way. Very quiet place. The pool is suitable for kids and adults and is clean. There is a small playground area and a nice tree swing.
Staff are a bit aloof, even to Thai speakers. If they ask to pay in advance(before we even saw the room in our case),politely refuse. As usual the lower level staff (cleaners, baggage carriers maids, gardeners) are gracious and friendly so tip them well!
Riverside rooms (floating) are ok and are the best choice here. 1500 baht per night for twin beds,400 baht for each extra mattress. Beds ok, and linen clean. Bathroom cramped and dated but has hot water.Avoid all other rooms as the 800 baht bungalows are old and mouldy and located well back from the river, no view at all, not even of garden or pool, so not much point in staying there if you are there for a river relaxation experience. Poolside rooms ok, more new than bungalows and definitely better views-they are close in price to river rooms and I would definitely spend extra to be on the river.
Restaurant serves good food at lunch and dinner, varied Thai menu . Breakfast buffet included in room prices has usual Thai options plus toast, eggs and coffee.
Three star resort.
- suziepoo56 (6/5): Disappointing - We had booked for 3 days in Kanchanaburi to do the usual attractions and had booked a raft room here.
It us a 10 minute ride away from centre of town and each way will cost 150 to 200 baht Tuk Tuk ride so you should factor this in.
The site is large and mostly quite peaceful however the accommodation is very run down and it need of maintenance.
The bed linen was shabby, the bathroom had mould round the bottom edge, the toilet empties straight in to the river. The air con dripped water every morning until a large pool formed.
There is a fridge in the room but no safety deposit box or tea making facilities.
The staff are helpful although their English language was not great. Breakfast was mediocre.
- davidmD7888SO (8/5): River Kwai experience! - The complex is a little tired and if you or your partner are expecting 4-5 star accommodation, perhaps this isn't for you but the location on the River Kwai is to die for! A/C worked great (which is handy when it's 43 degrees C and 75% humidity in April!) and everything was comfortable!
- 581brentg (6/5): Not a bad option for small kids - For us the maing attraction was a nice garden playground for the little one, and a very nice pool area on our doorstep. The rooms have old furniture and are quite basic. The bathrooms are not that clean. Bedding and rowels need replacing. They host Thail parties here on the rafts, fortunately the ended fairly early and actually were very entertaining for our toddler who kept dancing and trying to join the party. I probably wouldn't return here though. I am just getting tired of 3rd class experiences.
- 812desid (8/5): It is all about what you make of it! - Over the last 5 to 10 years I have stayed in many hotels in Kanchanaburi and always find a reason to return to the Duenshine. At a price of 1500 Baht I personally put it as a 300 Baht room with a 1200 Baht view. Go further down the river and you can pay 12,000 Baht which might suit some people. The bugs can visit either priced accomodation free of charge. The vip rooms are slightly better maintained however the location is what makes this a very good value for money experience....the staff have always been nothing short of very helpful and nothing is of any trouble to make sure your stay is very pleasant. The Thai food is good but the breakfast is the usual egg, ham and plastic sausage..this is the norm for Thai hotels outside the main tourist areas. I personally enjoy the sunsets and sunrises from the raft veranda...just beside paradise in my book and don't forget to wave at the odd party boat getting pulled along in typical Thai manner. Enjoy this hotel.
- AblloAmeer (6/5): Great location if you just want to escape the city - Stayed for one night in an overwater raft bungalow. The room was clean and comfortable. Note this is not a luxurious place, rather a simple and peaceful. The river was quite except for a few boats that passed by, which was nice to see. There seem to be security walking along from time to time. The food was ok and maybe bit overpriced. Breakfast needs improvement.
- bcaptured (6/5): Pleasant - I had a pleasant stay here, and despite the initial problems of my bathroom, it was quickly sorted out. Although there were a few problems with bugs and things, when in Thailand, it is to be expected. We are on a river, and with brilliant view. The Raft Houses are very lovely, and adorable to sit on in the evening. For the experience, I cannot fault it. Few things here and there I wish I could change, but when in Thailand there is never really much escape from the bugs for long.
- MelanieLuxembourg (2/5): Worst place ever - I booked one night on a floating house boat which is called Raft house type with a local agency. Already after reading some comments here I was scared what I will see there. Unfortunately this place was so rotten, dirty and full of animals (even in the bed) that I could not stay and had to leave after 5 minutes. The view from the house boat is nice that is true but for the rest the room and the toilet: it is dirty, destroyed (wholes in the walls of the toilet) and full of ants and other animals.. No place where I could sleep only 5 minutes.. If you want sth. clean and nice don`t go there. There is other offers for this kind of accomodation in the region which are much more nice than this one and better located as well. In short: I would not even recommend this hotel to my worst enemy!
- sandeepdelhi (6/5): A good stay for a short trip to Kanchanaburi - An average total experience of stay at the Duenshine Resort. Just sit on the raft bungalow porch and listen to the weird bird song and look at the boats passing by. Breakfast could be better, that´s the only negative thing I can say. The place has a very average restaurant but it is just ok. The place is safe and not very crowded. The swimming pool is good for relaxing. A average place for the cost. Great View is the best thing.
- RadonBeton (2/5): Nightmare! - By far the worst experience I've had so far in a hotel!
We received a river cabin for an overnight stay. The room was dirty, the bathroom was filthy, an army of ants was living in the bedlinen. The only thing to be apreciated was the view over the river from the porch outside the cabin. The toilet was not flushing at all, and ended up as a big poo lake all over the floor. As they did no succeeded in fixing this and the smell was awfull in the room, we moved in another room in the main building of the hotel.
As we needed a triple room and this one was a double the solution was just a matress directly on the floor. This room aparently looks much cleaner then the river cabin, but in the end we found out that it was homebase for a bunch of big and nasty bugs that were running all over the place. We bearly get to have some sleep, with the lights on and always alert.
Pity that the location is nice, and the outdoor pool is a blessing.
So my advice is to run as far as you can away from this place!
I'm not usually writing this type of reviwes, but this was indeed a horrible experience!
- thomasnr7 (10/5): Great to come back to this place. - I give it 5 point´s based on the total experience.
It is the perfect place to start a holiday after a year of stressfull work.
Just sit on the raft bungalow porch and listen to the weird bird song and look at the boats passing by.
Breakfast could be better, that´s the only negative thing I can say.
A rented motorbike can be useful if you stay here.
- kevinpatrickbarker (4/5): Dirty rooms - This resort , if you can call it that was a bad experiance. Firstly the rooms were very dirty and old, the shower was disgusting and had a bad odour. the bed was so hard it was hard to sleep on it ,the aircon did not get cold at all , and was noisy. The breakfast was ordinary and the tables were dirty .we were booked for 2 nights and after one were went to the front desk and told them we were leaving as the rooms were so dirty . The reception did not argue and gave us our money back for the one night. There is nothing good to say about this hotel . The rooms on the river might be better .
- Mellie8878 (8/5): Excellent rooms on the river! - We stayed here for a couple days in August in one of the 'raft rooms' that was right on the river. The setting was fantastic with a nice view of the sunset over the river. The boats that occasionally passed on the river would send the rooms rocking a little bit but we got used to it and I even thought it was fun. :p
Bathrooms were okay and the staff were friendly.
A/C stopped working on the second night and they fixed it in the morning. (Common complaint)
A little far from the main town so you'll be forced to have dinner in the restaurant which might not be too agreeable for Western tourists as it mostly caters to Asian customers.
1,800 THB a night for the raft rooms. Just for the river experience, it was worth every baht and more.
- Selwyn072 (8/5): Neat place to stay - We loved it here we had one of the floating rooms on the River Kwai, they have a lovely pool and restaurant was great, the wine was expensive as it is all imported. They organised our trip to the death railway and to the Saphire and Ruby mines, the wife loved that.We found room prices very reasonable would go back again.
- thomasnr7 (8/5): Relax and enjoy the River Kwai at this place - If you want western standard luxury go some where else. This is a resort with good standard rooms with AC, fridge, TV, shower and a bed.
I started my 6 week trip by spending 4 days here and my aim was to relax, sit on the river raft porch and just know it is holiday far away from work. This was the right place for that.
In weekends many thai people come here for weekend fun. The other days only a few rooms was oocupied. I got to know some nice thai people from Bangkok here.
Pool was great.
Beds was ok.
TV 22 inch.
Restarant and breakfast, no complaints.
Taxi in to the city Kanchanaburi - 10 min. 150 baht.
Go to Glitzy Disco at River Kwai Hotel on saturdays for fun.
If you stay here chose the raft rooms.
- Jack89 (4/5): Wouldn't stay here again... - We stayed at this hotel in Nov 2006 for luckily just 1 night. The brochure looks nice and the rooms are okay from the outside but once inside they are basic and in need of renovation. The resort is outside of town and unless you have your own transport travelling around is very difficult. The staff are friendly enough and the food is good. There is a small swimming pool but in short we wouldn't stay here again unless it was modernised.
- Cacilia (4/5): below expectations - We were disappointed with this resort. The photos displayed on the internet were obviously taken when the resort first opened many years ago and bear little resemblence to the resort today. The first room which we stayed in one night, was what you would expect in a very low cost back packer's hostel in Thailand. We asked to be moved and were given a better room but still nothing like the rooms portrayed in the advertisements. The staff was friendly and kind. The owners or managers sat most of the day in the reception area not taking the slightest bit of notice of the guests which we found quite rude. The travel desk service was extremely poor. Despite signs in reception offering to change money, this service was not available. The resort is a long way away from Kanchanaburi (at least 5kms)so you tend to need to eat at the hotel at least once a day. However, the hotel's all day menu is very limited. We had lunch at the Apple Guest House in Kanchanburi which seemed very nice. Also the Felix River Kwai Resort is well regarded.
